How to Write Feet and Inches

There are two popular ways of writing feet: the abbreviation “ft.” or the single apostrophe (′). Inches can be represented using “in.” or with a double apostrophe (″). As an example, five feet, ten inches could be written as 5 ft. 10 in or 5′10″ .

Let's take a more in-depth look at the different ways of writing feet and inches and the common style guidance. Note that if you're writing an article for an employer, it's worth checking if they prefer you stick to a particular style guide.

What is the symbol for feet?

Firstly, we can write the abbreviation for feet as “ft.” - for example, we would write 4 ft. Alternatively, you may also see a single apostrophe indicating feet - so 4′ = 4 ft. = four feet. “Ft” is the same abbreviation for both singular and plural forms, so one foot is written as 1 ft., and two feet is 2 ft.

If you're writing something for publication, there isn't really a right or a wrong way to write measurements. But you should look to be consistent and use the same style throughout.

Writing feet and inches in the Chicago Manual style

The Chicago Manual of Style is most often used for academic writing. With this style, you spell out every word to avoid any ambiguity. For example, you would write, “The woman was five feet seven inches tall”. If you opt to use quotation marks, don't leave a space after the foot symbol - so you would write “She was 5′7″ in height”. If you're writing really short, you can include a hyphen. So, “five-seven." 1

Writing feet and inches in AP style

The Associated Press Stylebook is used by journalists writing for US newspapers and other media outlets. There are four basic rules for writing measurements in AP style:

  • Write the measurement in full as inches, feet, etc.
  • Always use figures before the measurement: for example, 4 inches, 9 feet, etc.
  • Don't use hyphens when writing a person's height, except if it's describing them. Then you can write “the six-foot-four man”. Apostrophes are used to indicate feet and inches only in technical contexts.
  • Use commas when talking about length and width. For example, the trailer is 24 feet long, 9 feet wide and 9 feet high.
  • She is 5 feet 4 inches tall.
  • The 5-foot-4-inch woman drove to work.
  • The swimming pool is 30 feet long, 15 feet wide and 6 feet deep.
  • The table measures 7 feet by 5 feet.
  • The 7-by-5 table fits nicely in the dining room.

Readers may be unaware of the relationship between divisibility properties of numbers and topological properties of the numerals used to represent them. Let us use the word number for both the concept and the numeral. Given a number n , a proper prime divisor of n is a prime number, different from n , that divides n evenly. Note the following:

THEOREM. Consider the set of numbers S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}. For a, b ∈ S the following are equivalent:

a and b have the same number of proper prime divisors (counted with multiplicities).

a and b have the same homotopy type .

a and b cut a sheet in the same number of pieces if you write them down with a scalpel .

COROLLARY. A number in S (other than 1 ) is prime if and only if it has trivial homotopy type at equivalently, it does not tear the sheet in separate pieces.

Students will first learn about how to write a ratio as part of ratios and proportions in 6 th grade.

What is writing a ratio?

Writing a ratio is a way of showing the constant relationship between two or more quantities. The quantities can be in the same or different units. Ratios are commonly written in the form a: b.

In a class of students, there are 13 boys and 17 girls.

The ratio of boys to girls can be written as 13:17.

The ratio of girls to boys can be written as 17:13.

The ratio of total students to boys can be written as 30:13.

In a recipe, there are three eggs, one onion, and two tomatoes. The ratio of eggs to onions is 3:1.

The ratio of yellow to blue squares is 7:5.

The ratio of blue to yellow squares is 5:7.

The ratio of yellow squares to the total number of squares is 7:12.

After you have written a ratio, like in the examples above, it is possible that the ratio can be simplified by writing an equivalent ratio. When a ratio is fully simplified, the parts of the ratio are all integers with no common factors.

Example 1: writing a ratio about an everyday life situation.

Ms. Holly is looking after 7 children. She has 5 toys in her nursery. Write the ratio of children to toys.

There are 7 children and 5 toys.

The order of the ratio is children to toys.

Teaching tips for how to write a ratio

  • Worksheets are a good way for students to practice writing ratios, but be sure to include worksheets that show the ratios in a variety of formats. This can include written statements, pictures or graphs. Also choose worksheets that have questions that ask for unsimplified and simplified ratios.

Easy mistakes to make

  • Writing the parts of the ratio in the wrong order When a ratio is written, the order is very important. Remember to read the problem carefully to ensure you get the order right. For example, There are 12 dogs and 13 cats. What is the ratio of cats to dogs? A common mistake would be to write 12:13 because this is the order in which the numbers are presented in the information. However, the question asks for the ratio of ‘cats to dogs’, so the correct answer is 13:12 because there are 13 cats and 12 dogs.
  • Confusing wholes and parts Take the ratio of boys to girls 5:4. This ratio shows two parts. If asked, what is the ratio of boys to total students, the parts need to be added to find the whole. Since 5 + 4 = 9, there are 9 students in all. The ratio of boys to total students is 5:9.
  • Confusing fractions and ratios in fraction form Ratios can also be written as fractions, but this does not typically happen until later to avoid confusion. When students are ready to write a ratio in fraction form, the numerator and the denominator represent the two values being compared. It is important to note that the fraction form of a ratio does NOT always represent a part-whole relationship. For example, The ratio of dogs to cats is \cfrac{6}{4} . The ratio is written the same as an improper fraction, but it is not appropriate to read this ratio as “6 fourths .” The numerator of the fraction represents the dogs 6, and the denominator of the fraction represents the cats 4. This ratio is read as “6 to 4” or “6 dogs to 4 cats.”

C hecks are not dead. In fact, according to a recent survey by GOBankingRates, 17% of Americans are still writing checks on a monthly basis — and 15% send a few checks every month.

While this age-old method of sending money through checks has been around for hundreds of years, the last few decades have brought about many different ways to send money that do not involve mailing a piece of paper.

In fact, there are many ways to send money that offer faster transitions, less risk and less work — and are better for the environment! Read on for the details of the survey, which generations are using checks the most and a few different ways to avoid checks altogether.

Older Generations Are Sending More Checks

According to the survey, 23% of Gen X Americans are still sending checks on a monthly basis. Unsurprisingly, younger generations are not sending as many checks, but it is interesting that those age 65 and older are sending the least amount — only 13% send monthly checks.

When it comes to Gen Z and Millennials, nearly 50% of them did not send one check in the last year. This should come as no surprise, as digital payment methods are everywhere these days.

When comparing the check-writing habits of men vs. women, men send more checks — on average — than women. While 50% of women report not writing a check at all last year, only 43% of men report the same.

The Risks of Using Checks

Writing checks is a straightforward way to make a payment, but it does come with a few risks.

Checks typically have your entire account number and routing number printed on them. If someone with bad motives got ahold of one of your checks, they could use that information to drain the account that your checks are attached to.

In addition, checks are often mailed, making them vulnerable to mail theft. Again, with the information printed on them — including your signature — identity thieves can take your money in a hurry.

And finally, checks are simply a more inconvenient way to pay for services. Not only does your identity need to be verified, but they can take a while to clear your bank account, increasing the risk of overdraft if you don’t account for the check payment.

8 Ways To Make Payments Without Using a Check

With so many payment options these days, you don’t have to write checks. Here are a few ways to make payments and avoid writing a check:

Peer-to-Peer Payment Platforms

Peer-to-peer payment apps allow you to transfer money without whipping out your checkbook.

“Digital payment applications have emerged as frontrunners in the realm of monetary transactions,” said Ryan Jacobs, founder of Jacobs Investment Management . “Platforms like PayPal, Venmo and [Cash App] offer a blend of convenience and rapidity, allowing users to send and receive money with just a few taps on their smartphones. These applications not only expedite the transaction process but also provide robust security measures to safeguard user data and finances.”

These apps make it easy to pay a friend back that money you borrowed. But they are also used by small businesses to accept digital payments instantly.

Online Bank Transfers

If you’re sending money to another financial institution or making an online payment, you can use your bank account to make online transfers. Whether it’s a direct ACH transfer to another account or making a payment with your account number and routing number, online bank transfers are typically free of charge.

“The advent of online banking has revolutionized the way we handle our finances,” said Jacobs. “Most banks now offer the facility to transfer money directly from one account to another via their online portals or mobile apps. This method is not only faster than writing checks but also eliminates the risk of physical theft or loss.”

Online transfers may take a day or two to clear, so they aren’t the fastest method of payment. But they are more efficient than writing a check!

Mobile Wallets

Mobile wallets make it easy to spend money from your bank account or an attached credit or debit card without having to physically pull out your wallet. You can simply tap your mobile device or choose a direct transfer to someone, and the money is transferred instantly.

“Mobile wallets like Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Samsung Pay have gained significant traction in recent years,” said Jacobs. “These platforms allow users to store their card information securely and make payments with just a near-field communication (NFC) tap. The contactless nature of these transactions makes them both speedy and hygienic, a crucial consideration in today’s world.”

Wire Transfers

For larger, important payments, writing a check is just plain risky. For things like a house down payment or other larger purchase, a wire transfer is a secure way to send money.

Most banks and credit unions offer wire transfer services for a small fee. You can also use wire transfers for international transactions.

“For international transactions, wire transfers remain a reliable and fast method,” said Jacobs. “Services like Western Union and TransferWise enable users to send money across borders with minimal hassle. The efficiency and widespread acceptance of wire transfers make them a viable option for global business dealings.”

Online Bill Pay

Many banks offer online bill pay services that let you send payments directly from your bank account. You can link your monthly bills and send via a bank transfer.

But many online bill pay platforms will also send checks from your account for free. This means you don’t have to write or mail the check, saving time and money on postage.

Some businesses and services simply don’t accept digital payments due to fees. But your bank might let you send them a check digitally.

Credit Cards

While writing a check might feel like a simple, time-tested method of making a purchase, credit cards offer far more protections. Credit cards can help you avoid scams, reimburse you for fraud and do not take money directly from your bank account.

For online purchases, the built-in protections offered by credit cards make them a great way to make purchases.

The big caveat with credit cards is to be mindful of the interest charged on balances that you don’t pay off. Treat them like a debit card and pay off the statement balance in full monthly, and you’ll avoid high interest charges.

Prepaid Debit Cards

Debit cards have replaced checks in many cases. But if you want to use a debit card and don’t want it linked directly to your bank account, a prepaid debit card may be a good option.

You can load money on a prepaid debit card and use it for purchases. You can also send a prepaid debit card to someone as a form of payment.

“Load funds onto cards from Green Dot, NetSpend or other providers — then send them to others,” said Andrew Lokenauth, founder of Fluent in Finance . “Recipients can use cards anywhere that accepts Visa or Mastercard without a bank account.”

Cryptocurrency

Cryptocurrency was originally designed as a peer-to-peer payment system so individuals could send digital money over the network without the need for an intermediary like a bank. It has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, and many cryptocurrencies can be sent quickly and efficiently over crypto payment networks.

“Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, ethereum and ripple offer a futuristic alternative to traditional banking,” said Jacobs. “These digital currencies facilitate peer-to-peer transactions without the need for an intermediary, leading to potentially lower transaction fees and increased privacy.”

Crypto works across borders in most countries, as well, with no additional currency exchange fees charged for sending money across the world.

  • Warning: Cryptocurrency is a volatile type of currency with a constantly fluctuating value — and there are many scams in crypto, as well. Don’t use this method unless you’re comfortable using the technology.

But Don’t Throw Away Your Checkbook!

While checks have mostly gone the way of the dinosaur, don’t throw away that checkbook just yet. There are still a few reasons to keep it around.

  • Stay on budget: Checks come straight from your bank account. Writing checks can help you be more aware of your spending and keep you from getting into debt.
  • Widely accepted: Checks are a commonly-accepted payment method. While some places are digital-only, most businesses accept checks.
  • Traceable: Personal checks can be traced by individual account and check numbers, making them easier to track — and better for business accounting.
  • Avoid fees: Sending a check doesn’t cost anything — other than postage. With fees for credit cards and online payment services on the rise, using a check can save you money.

Even if you don’t plan on using checks regularly, having a checkbook on hand can come in handy when you do eventually need it.

We rarely write blog posts about minor releases, but today we have a few surprises for you — experimental support for Material 3, signal queries, model inputs, Netlify loader, and hydration debugging support in Angular DevTools.

In the next few paragraphs you’ll learn more about the individual features and find links to documentation.

Experimental Material 3

Over the past months we’ve been working hard to transition the Angular ecosystem to the latest version of Material Design for the Web. In the process we worked with the Material Design team at Google to understand what M3 means for the Web, we developed test harnesses to support migration to components with a new HTML structure, and today we’re proud to share our experimental support for the new specification.

Paving the way for Signals

To improve developer experience, over the past year we’ve been highly focused on revamping Angular’s reactivity model using Signals. As part of this effort we’ve been incrementally delivering APIs in developer preview that you can try and share your feedback with us while we finalize them. Signal-based inputs landed in v17.1. Today we have two new such APIs for you — signal queries and model inputs.

Signal queries

Since we originally released Angular in 2016 TypeScript and the entire web ecosystem evolved significantly. Over time some of the original APIs showed opportunities for improvement. For example, the view queries API Angular offers lacks type safety and has a suboptimal developer ergonomics.

At the same time, signals are a great primitive for representing values that change over time. In the series of RFCs we published last year, we shared a proposal for signal-based queries. Today we’re releasing a developer preview of this API:

Model inputs

Another Signal API we’re sharing in developer preview today is model inputs. Signal inputs, which we released in v17.1, are read-only so they can enforce best development practices.

For sharing state between a parent and a child component, we need writable signals and that’s the gap that model inputs fill:

Performance made easier

Together with developer experience, the second pillar for Angular over the past few years has been performance. Last year we introduced non-destructive hydration and continued improving our image directive for avoiding pitfalls when loading images.

Today we have two great new improvements for you.

Hydration debugging support in Angular DevTools

It can be challenging to debug hydration DOM mismatch errors when you have different data between the client and the server or perform manual DOM manipulations.

A community contribution by Matthieu Riegler introduced hydration debugging support in Angular DevTools which can help you deal with this problem easier.

In the image above you can see how Angular DevTools shows you the mismatch between the DOM coming from the browser and the HTML the server produced.

Angular DevTools will update automatically for you in the next couple of days.

Image loader for Netlify

The NgOptimizedImage directive enables powerful performance features for your images, including automatic srcset . You can also specify an image loader.

Starting in v17.2 you can now use the provideNetlifyLoader to use this optimization with Netlify! Learn more in the documentation about the loader and the image directive .

Automatic placeholders with NgOptimizedImage

If you’re using the NgOptimizedImage directive for your images, you can now quickly add a blurry placeholder while an image loads. Just add the placeholder attribute to your image, and the image directive will automatically request a small version of the image, blur it, and display that until the full image is ready.

Not using an image loader? The new placeholder feature also supports inlined base64 image placeholders, so it can be used in any application!

Quadruple quantum: engineers perform four quantum control methods in just one atom

UNSW researchers have demonstrated multiple ways to write quantum information in silicon for more flexible quantum chips design.

Quantum computing engineers at UNSW Sydney have shown they can encode quantum information – the special data in a quantum computer – in four unique ways within a single atom, inside a silicon chip.

The feat could alleviate some of the challenges in operating tens of millions of quantum computing units in just a few square millimetres of a silicon quantum computer chip.

In a paper published recently in Nature Communications the engineers described how they used the sixteen quantum ‘states’ of an antimony atom to encode quantum information. Antimony is a heavy atom that can be implanted in a silicon chip, replacing one of the existing silicon atoms. It was chosen because its nucleus possesses eight distinct quantum states, plus an electron with two quantum states, resulting in a total of 8 x 2 = 16 quantum states, all within just one atom. Reaching the same number of states using simple quantum bits – or qubits, the basic unit of quantum information – would require manufacturing and coupling four of them.

Lead author Irene Fernandez de Fuentes says the team, under the guidance of Scientia Professor Andrea Morello, drew on more than a decade’s work that had established different methods of quantum control to show all were possible within the same atom. The antimony atom was implanted in the chip by colleagues at the University of Melbourne, using facilities of the Heavy Ion Accelerators at the Australian National University.

“First, we showed that we could control the antimony’s electron with an oscillating magnetic field, similar to the breakthrough in 2012 which was the first time a qubit had ever been demonstrated in silicon,” she says.

“Next we showed that we could use a magnetic field to manipulate the spin of the antimony’s nucleus. This is the standard magnetic resonance method, as used for example in MRI machines in hospitals. The third method was to control the nucleus of the antimony atom with an electric field, something that was discovered by lucky accident in 2020 .

“And the fourth way was to control both the antimony nucleus and the electron in opposition to each other, using an electric field using  so-called flip-flop qubits , which was demonstrated by this team last year.

“This latest experiment shows that all four of these methods can be used in the same silicon chip using the same architecture.”

The advantage of having four different methods is that each method gives computer engineers and physicists more flexibility when designing future quantum computing chips.

For example, magnetic resonance is faster than electric resonance, but the magnetic field spreads widely in space, so it may also affect neighbouring atoms. Electric resonance, while slower, can be applied very locally to select one specific atom without affecting any of its neighbours.

“With this big antimony atom, we have the complete flexibility of how we integrate it with a control structure over a silicon chip,” Prof. Morello says.

Why this matters

The quantum computers of the future will have millions, if not billions of qubits working simultaneously to crunch numbers and simulate models in minutes what would take today’s supercomputers hundreds or even thousands of years to complete. While some teams around the world have made progress with large numbers of qubits, such as Google’s 70 qubit model or IBM’s version which has more than 1000 , they require much larger spaces for their qubits to work without interfering with one another.

But the approach that Prof. Morello and other colleagues have taken at UNSW is to design quantum computing using technology already in use to make conventional computers. While progress may be slower in terms of numbers of working qubits, the advantage of using silicon will mean being able to have millions of qubits in a square millimetre of chip.

“We are investing in a technology that is harder, slower, but for very good reasons, one of them being the extreme density of information that it'll be able to handle,” says Prof. Morello.

“It's all very well to have 25 million atoms in a square millimetre, but you have to control them one by one. Having the flexibility to do it with magnetic fields, or electric fields, or any combination of them, will give us lots of options to play with when scaling up the system.”

Back to the lab

Next, the group will use the large computational space of the antimony atom to perform quantum operations that are much more sophisticated than those afforded by plain qubits. They plan to encode a ‘logical’ qubit within the atom – a qubit built upon more than two quantum levels, to get enough redundancy to detect and correct errors as they occur.

“This is the next frontier for practical, useful quantum computer hardware” says Prof. Morello. “Being able to build an error-corrected logical qubit within a single atom will be a tremendous opportunity for scaling up silicon quantum hardware to the point where it becomes commercially useful”.
