Cloud Migration to AWS for Science-Focused Media Company

In 2018, a U.S. media company focused on educational content partnered with a leading scientific organization for deep sea and ocean exploration. The organization’s drones would explore the ocean and upload their findings to the media company’s platform, which included a forum for scientists and explorers. To make this possible, the media company hired Wizeline to migrate the platform to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Our solution

A team of Wizeline engineers worked with the scientific organization’s platform to map how its systems operated. The team then developed a roadmap for migrating their frontend, backend database, and other layers to AWS. Because the old system operated differently than how it would operate on AWS, the team would have to modify the notification and authorization layers, along with a few modules. The media company also wanted all of the platform’s assets to follow their brand guidelines.

Wizeline migrated all assets and optimized its operations so that it worked seamlessly with the media company on AWS. Not only did they deliver the project within the three-month expected timeframe, but the team also added and removed features to reflect the current needs of the business. Because the project was supported by grants and sponsorships, the engineers removed code that enabled donation processing on its website. Additionally, engineers updated the mapping implementation and caching to improve overall performance.

Customer impact

After the migration, the average number of new users per month increased by 4,000% due to improved performance and renewed marketing efforts. The new system was stable and accommodated user growth and increased usage of the platform to monitor expeditions. Consolidating the new companies’ assets resulted in a cost savings of approximately 30% over hosting both IT assets on separate services and mitigated operational errors. Most importantly, users did not notice that a complex cloud migration had taken place or that Wizeline integrated two very different systems while the scientific initiative remained in full swing.

Case Study: Enterprise data lake on cloud

1CloudHub helped India’s leading television entertainment network bring its scattered big data into a single source of truth, to make advanced analytics affordable.

Cloud Advisory Services

Dc, servers & data, project scope, — data lake architecture design — data transformation and storage in data lake — customized reports in powerbi, about the client.

The client is a leading media production and broadcasting company, subsidiary of a global media conglomerate. They have over 30 television channels, a digital business and a movie production business, reaching over 700 million viewers in India.

Business challenge

As part of their digital strategy, our client wanted to optimise user experience across channels — iOS and Android apps, Fire TV, web, and so on — based on user behaviour and preferences. This required a deeper understanding of customer behavioural patterns across platforms.

Presently, they were using Segment as the tool to collect around 6.5 billion records (20TB of raw data) of behavioural data from their 30 million online viewers every month from across sources.

In order to deliver a user-focussed digital viewing experience, the client needed

  • Reliable storage, with protection against data corruption and other types of data losses
  • Security against un-authorized data access
  • Ease of finding a single record in billions (by efficiently indexing data)
  • An advanced analytics engine that can help them derive and visualise meaningful insights from the client’s high volume and variety of data.
  • All of this forming their single source of truth.

We, at 1CloudHub, enabled an enterprise data lake for all of the client’s data to reside in one place — preserving accuracy and timeliness of the data.

Leveraging our client’s existing mechanism to collect and feed data into the data lake, we created a pipeline with EMR (Elastic MapReduce) for data crunching or ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) and Power BI for self-service visualisation.

Our approach

aws media case study

Completion and reporting

01. understand.

  • In collaboration with the client’s development team, we outlined the volume, velocity, veracity and variety of data.
  • We worked with the client’s business teams and domain experts to define reports in Power BI for the 18 use cases the client had identified.
  • We mapped data to corresponding reports and planned data transformation.
  • Based on these, we designed and architected the data lake and pipeline necessary for Power BI.
  • With the client’s sign-off, we deployed the solution on AWS cloud.

aws media case study

04. Transform

  • Once the infrastructure was in place, our data engineering team performed the necessary ETL steps such as cleaning and consolidation to derive value from the raw data.
  • We stored this in an S3 bucket as parquet formatted files.
  • We imported transformed data as data-marts into AWS Redshift, to be used for Power BI reports.

05. Completion and reporting

  • We delivered a summary of findings and recommendations for production deployment to bring the PoC to a meaningful closure.

Better

We enabled advanced analytics for data from up to a year — compared to the 3 months data as per agreement — to deliver the meaningful insights the business teams sought.

Faster

We crunched over 12 million records in under an hour, running more than 100 VMs concurrently in a cluster.

Cheaper

We delivered each report at a cost of $70. At this cost, we delivered an excellent price-to-performance ratio, driven by the spot fleet instances we used and our on-demand or pay-as-you-use cloud model.

A similar setup on-premise in a data centre would have cost the client 12,000 times more.

Looking forward

We are delighted to have helped the client create a centralized, analytics-ready repository for their Big Data and look forward to helping them meet their strategic goals using our cloud capabilities.

Transitioning to new innovations in software development often feels like taking a leap of faith. Setting aside all pretense of encouraging articles, sharp marketing, and apparent functionality, you may still be left scratching your head over whether or not this next step is the right one to make.

Cloud computing has been an innovation that has turned over new stones for businesses around the globe. In theory, it’s a fascinating prospect, but what is theory without results? We’re saying you shouldn’t just take our word for it.

Rather than blind acceptance, we’re providing ten examples of businesses that have thrived using cloud computing through the services provided by AWS and Azure. Whether you find these success stories to be reassurance or simply interesting, they’re proof enough that cloud computing service models aren’t just hot air.

Cloud Success Stories with Amazon Web Services

Amazon Web Services, or AWS for short, is a cloud platform provided by Amazon, hosting infrastructure for anything from start-ups to enterprise businesses to government agencies. They provide the latest innovations in technology, like machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and an enormous suite of other services to help advance any and all businesses.

But what about the cloud success stories? What established companies have exploited AWS to give themselves a major edge in the business world?

1. SimScale

SimScale   is a computer-aided engineering software product that provides simulation tools to over 100,00 users. They allow these thousands of users to run more simulations than traditional local computer-based systems, and in turn they iterate more design changes as a result.

The start-up was founded as a solution to the high costs of using simulation as part of the design process, giving product designers the opportunity to simulate in an affordable way and make better informed decisions.

SimScale was built by 5 co-founders who were still students at the time, and as it tends to be with students, they had a very limited budget to work with. They decided to launch the platform in the cloud through Amazon Web Services. Deciding to run the business in the AWS Cloud from day one allowed SimScale to be the first simulation product to market, enjoying considerable growth ever since.

SimScale co-founders recognize that they’ve been able to set up a simulation environment in an extremely cost-efficient way. Had they used their own hardware, they would have required a complete team of people to run their system. Instead, they now only employ a few DevOps engineers to look after the AWS Cloud infrastructure.

Using AWS has saved them thousands in hardware, personnel costs, and IT maintenance. The result is now hundreds of thousands of users running simulations efficiently to improve the design of their products.

Airbnb   is an online marketplace and hospitality service company that allows property owners and travelers to connect with the purpose of renting unique vacation spaces around the world. Based in San Francisco, California, Airbnb doesn’t own any of the properties listed on their services. It simply acts as a broker, receiving commissions from each booking.

The idea for the company was conceived after its founders placed a mattress in their apartment living room and renting said space as a bed-and-breakfast. A year after Airbnb was launched, the company decided to migrate nearly all of its cloud computing functions to AWS due to service issues with their original provider.

AWS gave them the possibility to ramp up more servers without having to contact or go through anybody and without committing to a certain minimum usage. The provided leniency accelerated Airbnb’s growth exponentially without any setbacks. Not only that, but the entire database migration to Amazon RDS was completed with only requiring 15 minutes of platform downtime.

3. Nextdoor

Nextdoor   is a private social networking service for neighborhoods based in San Francisco. It allows its members to connect and communicate about relevant issues in their communities, such as news, events, local service-provider recommendations, warnings about suspicious activity, and so on so forth.

Nextdoor currently uses AWS to develop and launch new features and products on demand with just a single click, immediately improving user performance without the need of any engineering work. For Nextdoor, their IT priority is to have a fast and solid platform that can support their users effectively and efficiently, since the occasions may rise that they need to message their neighbors urgently in times of crisis. Therefore, they need flexibility to scale up and meet their growing customers demands.

4. Flatiron Health

Flatiron Health   is a healthcare technology and services company that focuses on accelerating cancer research and improving patient care. This is facilitated by hosting a platform that allows cancer researchers and care providers to share relevant information and learn from the specific experience of every patient.

Flatiron was founded after its creators experienced the painful journey of cancer through close family and friends. Through these experiences, they realized there was no easy way to access useful data of previous cancer patients in the U.S. Flatiron was conceived as a solution to ensure that researchers and doctors were able to collaborate by connecting cancer centers across the United States, allowing them to share what they have learned from every patient’s experience with the disease.

The benefits the company enjoys through AWS include the improvement of cancer data quality across the U.S. and speedy development of oncology-data software. Flatiron collaborates with over 260 oncology practices, large academic research institutions, and other healthcare organizations, which currently use the company’s cloud-based system to manage their daily workflows and analyze more than 1.6 million cancer patients.

All of this happens while also ensuring HIPAA compliance and other healthcare-industry regulations by running on the AWS Cloud. Leveraging the cloud gives Flatiron professionals the time they need to concentrate on developing better software for oncology practices, provide organized cancer data to researchers quicker, and ultimately accelerate the fight against cancer.

5. Worldline

Worldline formerly Bambora, is a Swedish company that provides card acquiring, payment processing, infrastructure, and additional services to businesses of all sizes, enabling offline and online sellers to accept debit and credit card payments.

Founded in 2015, Worldline now has over 700 employees and operates in more than 65 countries. Because of this rapid growth, Worldline needed a heavily secured IT system that could scale quickly on a global level and efficiently meet legislations on all the countries it operates in.

By utilizing AWS to host many of its platforms, the company is able to enter new markets in an average of three months, which is far quicker than the industry average. This is precisely because they don’t need hardware to function. Some other benefits of implementing cloud solutions include:

  • Scaling easily to match the business’ multimillion dollar growth in just two years
  • Launching new features to market in three months instead of twelve, which is the current industry average
  • Quickly setting up compliant environments in any country

Cloud Success Stories with Microsoft Azure

Microsoft Azure is not altogether different from AWS, providing cloud computing infrastructure for a variety of business sizes. Designed for compatibility with any industry, it distinguishes itself from its competition by being the only hybrid cloud service on the market. It’s committed to open source software, enabling businesses to effectively develop from anywhere by any means.

1. DriveTime

DriveTime   is a used car retailer and finance company based in Tempe, Arizona. The retailing process is as follows: DriveTime buys used cars at different auctions, then puts the purchased cars through a 14-day inspection at one of its 24 inspection centers to make any necessary repairs before sending the vehicles to its dealerships.

In order to deliver the best possible value to customers, the company used to send its 65 buyers yearly to physically inspect and acquire thousands of cars at public auctions all across the country. Said buyers relied on their knowledge from years of experience, keeping track of the whole process on paper. After years of doing things the old way, DriveTime decided to automate their manual, intuition-based auction and purchasing process by building an app through Microsoft Azure cloud database services.

With the Online Buyer app, the buyers now connect from their computers to a live-video feed and review every car, in up to four auctions at once, instead of traveling to just one auction and walking lanes of cars. This allows DirveTime to acquire 3x more vehicles than they could before with the obsolete manual process. The company inspectors can now save time and actually transform their knowledge into an accurate and repeatable purchase process.

2. Wineshipping

Wineshipping   is a wine shipment company founded in Napa, California, over 30 years ago. Wineshipping currently manages nine facilities across the U.S. with more than 700 wineries available as providers. Wine bottle shipping must be done with extreme care that includes temperature control, special packaging, and breakage insurance.

In order to operate efficiently, Wineshipping must track its customer and operational data tightly. With this in mind, they decided to go for a cloud-based solution with Dynamics 365 to focus more time on running the business and less on managing IT infrastructure and staff.

Through its Dynamics 365 deployment, the company unified its four financial systems into a single platform, helping it meet financial obligations on time, like submitting tax reports to state liquor control boards and federal agencies, while reducing operating costs by 20% and increasing productivity by 30 to 50%.

3. Accenture United States

Accenture United States   is a professional services company specializing in strategy, consulting, digital transformation, IT, and operations. 90% of the company’s applications and servers have migrated to the cloud, including Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365, giving employees access to business data no matter where they are, boosting productivity.

To increase security on their cloud apps, Accenture deployed Microsoft Cloud App Security, which provides them with identity and access management tools, mobile device and app management, data protection and security, as well as threat detection and prevention.

Devon   is an oil and natural gas exploration and production company based in the U.S. Devon is a data-driven company and must provide said data to the right people in an efficient way. By utilizing Office 365, Devon gives its field workers the ability to access that data immediately from any device, to make a drilling decision, approve purchase orders, or request delivery of materials to a work site, just to name a few examples.

Besides these other benefits provided by Microsoft, the company migrated its line-of-business applications and disaster recovery operations to the cloud with Microsoft Azure. This move allowed the company to rapidly deploy applications and scale accordingly in a cost-efficient manner.

5. San Diego County Office of Emergency Services

The   San Diego County Office of Emergency Services   coordinates the county’s response to disasters, and is the designated organization that San Diego residents turn to when they need up-to-date information during said disasters, such as floods, wildfires, earthquakes, and so on. The OES is also responsible for notifying and coordinating all agencies when a disaster strikes, ensuring all needed resources are available and mobilized efficiently, and developing recovery procedures.

To efficiently serve the whole community, the OES developed a cloud-based portal, having the ability to send notifications to San Diego residents on their mobile devices, with information also being available in Spanish and formats for blind or deaf citizens.

During disasters prior to deployment to a cloud-based platform, the county’s on-premises servers could not handle the huge flood of visitors to their official website, resulting in the site crashing. That experience led them to look for a better web hosting solution, which made them turn to the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, reducing their costs by 78%.

With these improvements and updates in place, the OES agency is now meeting its goal of efficiently serving more county residents during times of crisis by providing real information in real time with push notifications, allowing them to make the right decisions that will help ensure their safety.

The Leap of Faith

Older web hosting services are becoming noticeably obsolete as cloud computing service models gain popularity. The cloud success stories we listed are only a few of thousands of thriving businesses that have made the transition. Title: reinforcement learning as a parsimonious alternative to prediction cascades: a case study on image segmentation.

Abstract: Deep learning architectures have achieved state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on computer vision tasks such as object detection and image segmentation. This may be attributed to the use of over-parameterized, monolithic deep learning architectures executed on large datasets. Although such architectures lead to increased accuracy, this is usually accompanied by a large increase in computation and memory requirements during inference. While this is a non-issue in traditional machine learning pipelines, the recent confluence of machine learning and fields like the Internet of Things has rendered such large architectures infeasible for execution in low-resource settings. In such settings, previous efforts have proposed decision cascades where inputs are passed through models of increasing complexity until desired performance is achieved. However, we argue that cascaded prediction leads to increased computational cost due to wasteful intermediate computations. To address this, we propose PaSeR (Parsimonious Segmentation with Reinforcement Learning) a non-cascading, cost-aware learning pipeline as an alternative to cascaded architectures. Through experimental evaluation on real-world and standard datasets, we demonstrate that PaSeR achieves better accuracy while minimizing computational cost relative to cascaded models. Further, we introduce a new metric IoU/GigaFlop to evaluate the balance between cost and performance. On the real-world task of battery material phase segmentation, PaSeR yields a minimum performance improvement of 174% on the IoU/GigaFlop metric with respect to baselines. We also demonstrate PaSeR's adaptability to complementary models trained on a noisy MNIST dataset, where it achieved a minimum performance improvement on IoU/GigaFlop of 13.4% over SOTA models. Code and data are available at this https URL .

Top 8 AWS Lambda Use Cases

Top 8 AWS Lambda Use Cases

Serverless computing is gaining a lot of momentum these days. Some of us may confuse serverless computing with peer to peer networking model.

But, in reality, serverless computing is an entirely different concept. It offers the vendors with the function as a service platform (FaaS), which performs application execution without storing data.

One of the key reasons behind continual growth in serverless computing is its ability to work without interfering or hampering your productivity.

Amazon was the first FaaS public cloud service provider when it launched the AWS Lambda back in 2014.

We will be looking at some of the top use cases of AWS Lambda across industries like entertainment, gaming, technology, and media.

A Look at Some of the Popular AWS Lambda Use Cases

Aws lambda & netflix, aws lambda & major league baseball advanced media, aws lambda & square enix, aws lambda & palringo, aws lambda & benchling, aws lambda & autodesk, aws lambda & guardian, aws lambda & seattle times, aws lambda use cases in entertainment.

Netflix, the leading OTT platform, delivers content to more than 125 million of its users. Netflix has partnered with AWS cloud services, and it helps them to scale the resources as and when required.

AWS Lambda is used by Netflix to process the videos in a streamlined manner and fasten up the process of data processing.

Another key area, where Amazon Lambda proves to be useful is when Netflix wants to back up its data. Amazon Lambda processes the content and makes the decisions on whether the file needs a backup.

And if the file is already backed up, then AWS Lamba checks and processes whether the modifications are required in the existing backups.

Major League Baseball is not just popular amongst sports enthusiasts but across the entire world.

MLBAM is a media wing of MLB, and it planned on improving the audience experience by introducing a real-time player tracking system with which MLBAM can display the insights in real-time.

At first, MLB wanted to implement an on-premise IT solution. But, as the MLB season takes place only for about six months, the majority of its resources would have stayed idle during the off-season period.

Also, as per the schedule, the frequency of the number of matches per day varies from 1-2 to even 12-15 matches per day. It was really difficult to build a system that could cater to such flexibility.

Hence MLBAM decided to partner with AWS for this project. Furthermore, MLBAM decided to go for serverless computing platforms with AWS Lambda to easily detect, process, and respond to the queries.

AWS Lambda also offered scalability that could help MLBAM to save the operational costs and increase or decrease the use of systems based on the number of matches.

Also, with AWS Lambda, MLBAM can now display the valuable insights within the 20 seconds of play.

AWS Lambda Use Cases in Gaming & Mobile Apps

Square Enix is one of the market leaders in the gaming industry. Its panache for unique user experience is widely known across the globe.

Square Enix's one of the most famous games Dragon Quest allows users to take screenshots after the completion of a task or special achievements, etc.

These screenshots are processed, and the task uses a lot of memory. Generally, these screenshots are around 200-300 per minute, but there are spikes during festive seasons or long holidays, and the number goes as high as 6000 images per minute.

Now to solve this problem with a dedicated On-premise solution is not advised since spikes are seasonal, and the investment made will be permanent.

In order to overcome this problem, Square Enix came up with a solution to moving to the cloud with AWS.

AWS Lambda allowed the Square Enix to eliminate the need to process the images on its end, and it also allowed the company to scale up or down at whatever level it wanted.

Palringo is a UK-based gaming app development company that focuses on bringing together people from less developed countries. Its main focus is on delivering the content that is based on a user’s demands.

As mobile-based technology is evolving with every passing day, it's unimaginable for a mobile app development company to stay stagnant.

With the growth in demand, the company faced outage and bottlenecking challenges. Solving these issues was time-consuming, and it was getting really tough for them to work more on the development part.

They decided to partner with AWS to eliminate these issues.

Palringo was benefitted with this alliance as they could spend more time on DevOps and continuous delivery. It has also helped to improve the productivity and efficiency of the Palringo employees remarkably.

AWS Lambda Use Cases in Technology

Benchling, headquartered in San Francisco, is a software company that provides life science solutions to its clients.

Benchling’s CRISPR is a platform used by scientists across the world to screen drug targets and build disease models.

But since this is a time-sensitive task, it becomes really essential that the results displayed are pretty quick.

But, Benchling faced difficulty in this time criteria with its previous vendor as it took almost 30 seconds, which were considered to be too slow.

That's when it decided to partner up AWS services. And they decided to go for serverless computing with AWS Lambda, and it turned out to be an amazing option for them.

The scientists could cut down the search time by 90% and helped the scientists to understand the results faster.

Autodesk, headquartered in California, US, is a software company that creates software for engineering, architecture, and media industries.

Autodesk started to use AWS services to decrease data-center dependability. But this process started becoming time-consuming as the adoption to AWS began increasing.

To solve this problem, the Autodesk IT team decided to use an automated system that can create new AWS accounts and update the old ones with minimal human interventions.

They decided to call that project "Tailor," and it was designed with a serverless architecture. The tailor uses different AWS services, and the system to automate these tasks is AWS Lambda.

The time to execute the request, process, and successfully start the service was significantly improved with AWS Lambda, and the benefits of adopting AWS did not end just there.

With AWS Lambda, Autodesk could also save operational costs significantly and improve security as well.

AWS Lambda Use Cases in Media

The Guardian is one of England's most-read newspapers, and its online paper subscription is also quite popular.

But, as the number of online customers started to grow, it was getting difficult to manage the user subscriptions for the newspaper.

The subscription plans vary from one customer to another, and it becomes harder to keep track of all the different subscriptions with on-premise systems.

Guardian News Media (GNM) had been using AWS for a long time, and the GNM decided to use AWS Step Function to simplify the database and run the tasks in a sequential manner.

AWS Lambda can reduce the number of iteration needed in the Amazon Step Functions.

With the help of AWS Lambda, Guardian could manage multiple systems with lesser time and higher efficiency.

Seattle Times is one of the most renowned newspapers across the Pacific Northwest, and it has a huge online subscriber base.

The newspaper had been maintaining an in-house IT infrastructure until some time back.

Then, to reduce the additional costs, it decided to go for the third party hosts for IT infrastructure.

But, after some time, the IT team came to understand that with the switch to third-party hosting, they had compromised the flexibility and scalability.

That's when they decided to partner with AWS services like Amazon EC2. The migration to Amazon EC2 was seamless, and AWS Lambda helped the newspaper in these transitions.

The processing ability of AWS Lambda is considered to be one of the key aspects of the Seattle Times' impeccable on-time subscription delivery.

Key Takeaways:

Amazon Lambda can help you to:

  • Improve processing speed.
  • Reduce the dependability on the third-party hosting.
  • Scale the processes as per the need.
  • Reduce IT costs.
  • Focus more on product development aspects.
