What Matters Most by Renita J. Weems

What Matters Most by Renita J. Weems

“Dr. Weems walks the reader through a re-reading of the woman in Songs of Solomon, who has long been written off as lovesick and silly,” says Rev. Neichelle R. Guidry, Ph.D. , the dean of the Sisters Chapel and director of the WISDOM Center at Spelman College in Atlanta. “Through a Womanist lens, however, this woman is self-possessed and deeply attuned to her agency. This was the first book that I read post-divorce, and it prompted me to define my desires, intentions and visions for my life for the first time. I recommend this for anyone who's looking to use their faith as a vehicle for personal expansion and healing.”

A Psalm for the Wild-Built By Becky Chambers

A Psalm for the Wild-Built By Becky Chambers

“Becky Chambers creates a post-apocalyptic fantasy world that is filled, not with terror, but with beautiful transformation,” says Rev. Eileen Casey-Campbell, Minister at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Canandaigua, New York . “This short novel conveys the process of being called to something larger than oneself better than anything I’ve ever read.”

The Sabbath by Abraham Joshua Heschel

The Sabbath by Abraham Joshua Heschel

“One book that really comes to mind, particularly post pandemic, is a brief little symphony of a book called The Sabbath ,” says Rabbi Steve Leder , the author of For You When I Am Gone and The Beauty of What Remains . “This book is about the sanctity of time versus the material and in the book, Heschel talks about the architecture of time, how our greatest cathedrals are moments in time. Every time I read it, I feel like why should I ever try to write or say anything as long as I live because this guy said it all? I can't do better than that. The Sabbath is, on the surface, about the concept of the Sabbath, but it's ultimately about the significance and holiness of time and not allowing our pursuit of the material to rob us of something far more precious. I think it's a very beautiful, powerful and important book, and it's only like 100 pages. If you can crack the first paragraph, you can grasp the entire book. People give up when they don't understand the first paragraph, but you just have to hang in there and read it five times.”

The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James H. Cone

The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James H. Cone

“This is a quintessential text for the library of any person of faith studying liberation theory through a theological lens and for conversations surrounding race and religion in America,” says Ekemini Uwan, a public theologian, co-author of Truth's Table: Black Women's Musings on Life, Love, and Liberation and co-host of the podcast Truth's Table . “Theologian James Cone makes a poignant connection between the crucifixion of Jesus and the white church’s active participation in the lynching of Black people throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Calling upon the voices of Langston Hughes, Fannie Lou Hamer, Billie Holiday and Dr. Martin Luther King, Cone insightfully traverses the Black American landscape and touches on social history, cultural movements and rich theology.”

Wholehearted by Koshin Paley Ellison

Wholehearted by Koshin Paley Ellison

“Koshin is a Zen priest, and in this book (as well as everything he's written, including Awake at the Bedside and Untangled ), he blends personal stories and Zen wisdom to help the reader identify some of their core values,” says Rabbi Seth Wax , Jewish Chaplain at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. “Each chapter also includes a short contemplation. It's lovely, sweet and deep.”

Spilling the Light by Theresa I. Soto

Spilling the Light by Theresa I. Soto

“I return to this book of meditations by my colleague, Rev. Soto, over and over,” says Rev. Casey-Campbell. “Deep threads of compassion run through every line, convincing me even at my most doubtful moments that I (and all the world with me) am so worthy of loving and being loved.”

Man's Search for Meaning by Vikto E. Frankl

Man's Search for Meaning by Vikto E. Frankl

“Victor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning — of course, if he wrote it today, he would probably choose a different title because it applies to all of us — is really about finding meaning within and despite suffering,” says Rabbi Leder. “When people are suffering, it's one of those times when they're drawn to religious or spiritual perspectives. Why? Or, given that it did, how? What are my choices? How do I live? How do I fit this into the context of having been a good person and yet, suffering? There are many books that deal with what we call theodicy which is ‘God and the problem of evil,’ but this is much more about human beings and the problem of evil. His basic point is that once if you're able to find some meaning in your suffering, it ceases to become only suffering.”

The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois by Honoree Fanonne Jeffers

The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois by Honoree Fanonne Jeffers

“While this isn't an explicitly theological book, poet Fanonne Jeffers beautifully honors the hard and sacred work of unearthing the stories within our lineages, reckoning with the traumas in our bloodlines, and actualizing our own authentic paths in light of them,” says Rev. Guidry. “This book is for anyone who needs a reminder to respect the particularity of their personal journey and tap into their power to self-actualize. Reading this book was a spiritual encounter that piqued my curiosity, broke and warmed my heart, and led me into deep reflection and contemplation.”

Parable of the Talents and Parable of the Sower by N.K Jemisin

Parable of the Talents and Parable of the Sower by N.K Jemisin

“Octavia Butler’s work is foundational to my spirituality,” says Rev. Casey-Campbell. “Her main character’s mantra in this series, ‘The only lasting truth is change; God is change,’ is one I’ve always carried with me. She is truly the mother of Afro-futurism, braiding hope and resilience into every story.”

Becoming Wise By Elizabeth Gilbert

Becoming Wise By Elizabeth Gilbert

“In this book, Tippett, host of the podcast On Being , shares insights from interviews she has conducted with thinkers, activists and change-makers,” says Rabbi Wax. “They are moving and thought-provoking.”

Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey

Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey

“The pandemic prompted many people to renegotiate their relationship to work, myself included,” says Rev. Guidry. “Hershey is adamant that our acculturation within a capitalist and white supremacist context has driven us to grind our way into chronic disembodiment and disillusionment. Her remedy? Taking our rest. Entering into our sacred ‘Dream Space.’ Entering into deep community, intimacy, softness and imagination. With beautiful personal stories and theology interwoven, this book feels like a soothing balm to anyone who desires recovery from spiritual, mental and physical exhaustion.”

Poems and Songs by Leonard Cohen

Poems and Songs by Leonard Cohen

“This might sound a little bit unusual, but I often turn to poetry,” says Rabbi Leder. “I have a little volume of Leonard Cohen poetry that I carry with me when I travel. I always have it with me and if I have two or three minutes, I'll read a poem. It's like this tiny little volume of thought, comfort, challenge and truth.”

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

“This book, by an indigenous environmental scientist, offers a vision of spirituality that is rooted in place and deeply connected to the web of life,” says Rev. Casey-Campbell. “She is both gentle and fierce in calling humans to live into their relatedness to all else.”

Judaism's Ten Best Ideas by Arthur Green

Judaism's Ten Best Ideas by Arthur Green

“It’s a very accessible guide to some of the key concepts in Jewish spiritual life,” says Rabbi Wax. “It’s not about proselytizing at all — we don’t really do that as Jews! — but rather, some of the basic ideas of the tradition that might be useful to spiritual seekers.”

Where Do We Go from Here by Martin Luther King Jr.

Where Do We Go from Here by Martin Luther King Jr.

“Published in 1967, this book is the slain civil rights leader and systematic theologian’s final work,” says Christina Edmondson, Ph.D., a higher education instructor, mental health therapist, co-author of Truth's Table: Black Women's Musings on Life, Love, and Liberation and co-host of the podcast Truth's Table . “Advocating for the mass employment of non-violent activism and the strategic and unified use of the ballot, King offers a blueprint for the necessary future resistance against racism in America and beyond. King’s deep understanding of poverty, militarism and American racism is on full display as he speaks to the strengths and concerns of the responses to injustice prevalent in his day that still serve us well over five decades later. A consistently timely, sobering, inspirational, and practical work with prophetic power for today’s chaotic political culture.”

Being Human by Leon R. Kass (editor)

Being Human by Leon R. Kass (editor)

“It's an edited anthology of both religious and secular writings about the human condition,” says Rabbi Leder. “It's so comprehensive and there's nothing kitsch about it — this is deep, thoughtful material.”

15 Spiritual Books to Change the Way You See Everything

From fiction to primers on religious practices, spiritual books can help us understand the world better—and ourselves.

Reading books about spirituality can open your heart to things you've always felt, or expand your thinking to include ideas you never dared to explore. Oprah has long talked about the impact of books by such thought leaders as Eckhart Tolle, Martha Beck, Brené Brown, Elizabeth Lesser, Mark Nepo, and so many others that have helped her through crises, guided her through transitions, and sometimes...blown her mind. Are you living with purpose? Are you cultivating empathy and connection? Can you sit with stillness? Can you process and move on from trauma, into strength? And can you even nourish your sense of the numinous, i.e. connect more deeply with the divinity within and around you? These are some of the essential questions these titles explore and provide pathways to.

Each of the recent offerings we highlight here—from memoir to literary fiction to poetry to romance novels—illuminates something about how individuals and communities conceive of and get proximity to the spiritual. That might entail praying in churches or temples or mosques with others, or it might mean being in nature. For scientists, the sublime might be found in conducting research leading to a breakthrough. And for others, it might mean letting the traditions of their childhood lead them to love when all else seems lost. So take some time to delve into these books on spirituality, to discover the numinous in your life and how you can access it. These books will surprise you, making you change the way you think about everything— politics, humanity, nature, music, pop culture, and even (perhaps especially) yourself.

The Dial Press Untamed , by Glennon Doyle

A #1 New York Times bestseller, a Reese’s Book Club pick, and named one of the best books of the year by O magazine, Untamed is an uplifting book that has spread like wildfire, resonating with people all over the world. Its message helps women find their emotional and spiritual independence and purpose. Doyle urges readers to locate their inner voices and to nourish them, to break free of those who tell us what we "should" be doing or the identity they think we "should" have—to become "untamed." To assist readers in that quest, Doyle shares her own story of overcoming addiction, crushing work and family demands, and decades of cultural conditioning. Part memoir and part call to action, Doyle explores topics like motherhood, divorce, blended families, queerness, and falling in love. A true manifesto!

Avery The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World , by his Holiness the Dalai lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Douglas Abrams

This tender book is written by Nobel Peace Prize laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, along with Douglas Abrams. It tells the story of how these two spiritual leaders—both having endured decades of exile and oppression— found a way to be full of joy. At the core is the friendship between them, full of loving teasing, laughing until they burst into tears, and the exchange of intimate stories and their own spiritual practices. Throughout we can see how many commonalities there are between the two men and their work: between Buddhism and Catholicism; their shared struggles for freedom in Tibet and South Africa. We walk away from this volume filled with joy, and being reminded how extraordinary these two humans are.

A Girlhood: Letter to My Transgender Daughter , by Carolyn Hays

Out in September, Hays’s (Carolyn Hays is a pseudonym) intimate memoir is a an ode to her daughter amid a world of injustice. Its impetus was an anonymous complaint that brought the Department of Children and Families to their door, and ultimately led the family to move out of the Bible Belt. The reason for the complaint? That their daughter was transgender and being raised as such. Spirituality and religion are at the book's core, as Hays questions the Catholic conception of the omnipotence of God, explores queer history in and out of the Catholic Church (particularly St. Joan of Arc), and how Christianity has been used to discriminate against transgender people and other groups. Hays here presents a different view of God—as a being of pure love that would never consider her daughter a mistake, but instead, a gift.

Convergent Books This Here Flesh: Spirituality, Liberation, and the Stories That Make Us , by Cole Arthur Riley

This New York Times bestseller by the creator of Black Liturgies offers a multigenerational reflection on three generations of the author's family. Arthur Riley's quest to discover the “necessary rituals” connecting us to a sense of belonging, dignity, liberation, and faith prompts her to plumb the stories of her grandmother and father to reveal an affirming spirituality rooted in kindness, love, and deep holiness.

Grove Press Freshwater , by Akwaeke Emezi

Now a prolific writer (they've published seven books in four years), Nigerian Tamil Emezi burst onto the literary scene with this gorgeous debut novel, following Ada, who was born "with one foot on the other side.” This other side is a world filled with gods and benevolent monsters, a mesmerizing tapestry of Igbo ontology. Emezi bases the saga on their own story of being a transgender ogbanje , which is an Igbo spirit born into a human body.

Vintage Blue Nights , by Joan Didion

Joan Didion was many things—a literary icon, a groundbreaking reporter and essayist, a style maven, and an incisive social and political commentator. And few write about grief as compellingly as Didion. And she had plenty of material to work with. Just days before Christmas 2003, Didion and her husband John Gregory Dunne’s daughter, Quintana Roo, became seriously ill. She was put in an induced coma on life support. Just days later, Dunne suddenly died of a massive coronary. While grieving her husband, Didion's daughter endured brain surgery. Quintana Roo died a year and a half after her father. Blue Night s is written from depths of grief, and reverberates with pain, bravery, and love.

On Repentance and Repair: Making Amends in an Unapologetic World , by Danya Ruttenberg

Available for preorder now, Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg's book explores the Jewish concept of teshuva , or repentance, in the context of the current world we live in. Ruttenberg explores the various harms and violence that humans commit against one another, from the interpersonal to the systemic, and poses the question of how amends and repair can be made—and whether in some cases, repentance is even possible. According to the medieval Jewish philosopher Maimonides, teshuva consists of five steps: naming and owning harm; starting to change/transformation; restitution and accepting consequences; apology; and making different choices. Fundamentally, teshuva is much different than dominant Christian concepts of forgiveness, which focus more on “letting it go” than on achieving actual resolution for the victim and changed behavior for perpetrators. Teshuva gives us more tools to address things like hurt within our personal relationships, sexual violence, police brutality, and global human rights violations.

Picador Gilead , by Marilynne Robinson

An Oprah's Book Club Pick and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Gilead is a novel and fictional autobiography of Reverend John Ames, an elderly, white Congregationalist pastor in the small, secluded, fictional town of Gilead, Iowa. He’s dying of a heart condition and telling the story of his life. It’s a multigenerational tale, exploring Ames’s grandfather’s past as a radical abolitionist engaging in guerrilla warfare against Confederates, who thought his right side was holy and had the ability to communicate directly with God. Ames himself spends this book recounting his loves and losses, his father’s crisis of faith, and his own theological struggles. Ames’s story is ultimately one of Christianity in America, how it can bind and divide, and how it can lead to incredible acts of bravery and incredible acts of violence.

Little, Brown Spark Rooted: Life at the Crossroads of Science, Nature, and Spirit , by Lyanda Lynn Haupt

Often, spirituality is how humans explain the things around us that science has not yet explained. In the same vein, science is often the practice of delving further into nature and the world around us, things that humans have long considered connected to the sacred. Rooted is a book that connects the scientific and the spiritual, bringing readers to a more holistic understanding of this natural world we inhabit. Readers will find themselves looking to connect to the earth in many ways, like walking barefoot in the woods, changing our conception of and relationships to trees and animals, and even altering our language to reflect deeper connections to nature. Science upholds what many of the poets, artists, mystics, and earth-based cultures have said for millennia: We are all rooted in this earth, and both science and spirit can help us imagine that rootedness in new ways.

Shambhala The Rumi Collection , edited by Kabir Helminski

Poetry has long been a way for humans to connect with spirituality, to that world full of things we cannot see or prove, but that we feel powerful. Rumi, a 13th-century Persian poet, Islamic scholar, and Sufi mystic, has written some of the most lyrical, beautiful poems about spirituality and mysticism—especially how it relates to humans’ experience of love. “Wherever you go, you are with me still, you who are my eyes and my brightness; if you will, draw me to drunkenness, if you will, transport me to annihilation” is one of his most resonant verses. Most say that nothing can compare to reading Rumi in Persian, but the English translations are still achingly poignant. For a deep dive into Rumi’s collection, check out this book that separates his poems by theme—who knows, they might come in handy for love letter inspiration later.

NYU Press Muslim Cool: Race, Religion, and Hip Hop in the United States , by Su'ad Abdul Khabeer

What is “Muslim cool”? Simply put, it’s a new conception of what it means to be an American Muslim—with all the different political philosophies, fashion, relationships to state power, and class conflicts that come with that. Through the lens of hip-hop and the performance of Blackness, readers see that Muslim cool is a way that both young Black and non-Black Muslims understand, challenge, and are sometimes confused by the Islamaphobia that exists in the U.S., as well as the anti-Blackness that pervades non-Black Muslim communities. Su'ad Abdul Khabeer shows how Muslims of all ethnicities use Blackness to understand their place in America, but that Black and Muslim don’t have to be lines of division. This is a form of critical Muslim self-making that builds on interconnections and intersections.

William Morrow & Company Bring on the Blessings , by Beverly Jenkins

Bestselling romance author Beverly Jenkins dives into the healing power of spirituality with this tale of Bernadine Brown, a woman with plenty of money—$275 million, to be exact—to burn after she divorces her cheating husband. Lost and hurt, Bernadine goes back to her roots in the church and asks God to give her a purpose. That purpose leads her to buy (yes, you heard that right) the entire town of Henry Adams, one of the last surviving townships founded by freed slaves after the Civil War. Mayor Trent July cares deeply about his town and its debt and foreclosure crisis, and originally butts heads with Bernadine, who has a lot of ideas about what Henry Adams and its residents need. But she learns to compromise, and Trent learns to love her vision, strength, and heart. Can these two work together to revive a town in trouble?

Convergent Books Truth's Table: Black Women's Musings on Life, Love, and Liberation , by Ekemini Uwan, Christina Edmondson, and Michelle Higgins

In their literary debut, Truth’s Table podcast cohosts Christina Edmondson, Michelle Higgins, and Ekemini Uwan present stories by and for Black women who seek to examine theology, politics, race, culture, and gender through a Christian lens. After all, who better to broach these questions than these three women; an activist, a theologian, and a psychologist. For Black women seeking deeper theological understanding, spiritual formation, and political education, Truth’s Table is a fascinating collection of essays and stories about dating, religion, and pop culture that will help guide you into a freer, more liberating and loving iteration of your faith.

HarperOne Living Judaism: The Complete Guide to Jewish Belief, Tradition, and Practice , by Rabbi Wayne D. Dosick, Ph.D

Judaism is a religion with intricate practices revolving around every part of daily life, all with fascinating theological beliefs and traditions behind those practices. Exploring sacred spirituality, Dosick, author of the acclaimed Golden Rules, Dancing with God , and When Life Hurts , introduces readers to the rich world of Judaism and all it entails.

Akashic Books Native Believer , by Ali Eteraz

Ali Eteraz’s (a pen name that means “noble protest”) provocative debut novel follows M., a Philadelphia man who is Muslim by birth but doesn’t hold to any of the beliefs. He wants nothing more than to live a life without care and raise his kids as Americans with just a period, no question mark or preface. But when he’s fired for owning a copy of the Quran, his life spirals out of control. He descends—or ascends, depending on your reading—to the world of pornographers, punks, and wrestlers, and converts to Islam as he grapples with the realization of exactly where he stands in America as a second-generation immigrant and Muslim. A darkly funny novel with an even darker ending, Native Believer offers questions—but no answers—about what it means to be Muslim in America.

Our recommendation: intuitively choose a book that you have not yet read. This is definitely one of the best spiritual books list for you! I can't encourage you how much I love my spiritual books, such must reads! This best spiritual books list was last updated on 03. January 2023.

Do You Like Books, But You Love Audiobooks?

Besides the best spiritual book list, which starts below, I have also sorted out all the audio books that are available from this book list. I know that many people prefer to listen to Audible.

A book of miracles with deep insights into our DNA. This book actually guides you towards understanding and extracting your DNA. This is one of the best spiritual books 2023 and of our century. Gene Keys is a teaching that combines ancient wisdom of the IChing, Astrology, Genetics and Human Design.

Biology of belief

In his bestseller, Dr. Bruce Lipton talks about his insights as a biologist that changed his view of the world forever. He talks in detail about how experience and our environment controls our genes and that we are not victims of our genes.

Odyssey to the Heart

The book is the heartwarming story of a middle-aged, unemployed, and divorced man who learns about "slow and less" instead of the "faster and more" lifestyle so familiar today.

The Power of the Now

I didn't read this spiritual book at best, but I listened to the audio book, where Eckart Tolle speaks in German. The content can hardly be described in words and the presence Eckart Tolle radiates is balm for the soul. A masterpiece that has to be experienced.

The Wisdom Keeper Deck

The Wisdom Keepers by Rosy Aronson is very dear to me. I regularly use the Oracle Deck and Inner Guidebook as an enhancement for the Gene Keys teachings by Richard Rudd. However, you do not need to be a Gene Keys practitioner. It is a beautiful transmission on its own.

The Book of the Sun

The Book of the Sun by Jenny Rook is a newcomer to the spiritual realms, and I love it. The work is well written, and the deep connection between the Sun and the individual human being is remarkable. The book is a mixture of personal experiences and Channelings.

Human Design - The Revelation

Welcome to a human design guide to the basic Concepts, Centres, Types, and Definitions by Richard Rudd. The Revelation and The Circuitry helped me understand Human Design better. I used both books to contemplate my life.

Jonathan Livingston Seagul

The world-famous work of Richard Bach, The Seagull Jonathan, surprises as always with a special style of writing and contain a profound spiritual message. A compulsory reading for the best spiritual books 2021 on my part. Especially the new chapter 4 that was missing for half a century is lovely!

Osho - The Book of Secrets

In 2020, I first found this book by Osho, which was recommended to me. This 1300-page masterpiece of Osho is probably one of the most comprehensive sources for real Tantra and meditation. So far, I find the book world class and very profound.

Spontaneous Evolution

Bruce Lipton is a genius! I did not read this spiritual book at best, however I listened to it. I loved special book from the start to the end. I really encourage you to have a listen or a read.

Richard bach - Illusions

Only recently, I read “Illusions” within 2 days because it captivated me so much. I was dying to know how the book ends! Richard Bach wrote a very special piece of work here, which with 120 pages is also easy to digest. Thumbs up!

Deepak Chopra - The Book of Secrets

Deepak Chopra has a wonderfully pleasant writing style that is easy to understand. This is the best spiritual book 2021 of Deepak Chopra. It is about consciousness, the spirit, and the secret by which we find more connection to ourselves again.

The Art of Contemplation

The Art of Contemplation is a masterpiece of Richard Rudd and Gene Keys. It is a practical self-help book for everyone's daily life. The power of pauses, pivots and merging can truly change your whole life from the inside out.

The Magus of Strovolos

The Magus of Strovolos is about a famous spiritual healer that lived in Nicosia, Cyprus. The book is a mix of esoteric teachings, psychology, reincarnation, cosmology and mysticism, from both eastern and western traditions. I was excited about the book and read within days.

A New Earth

Eckhart Tolle is known for his perspective in his best-selling book NOW. In New Earth - Awakening to Your Life's Purpose, he shares valuable content about the ego, how we learn to use and transcend the ego, and why it is more important than ever right now.

The Gift of Anger

Already in 2016 I read the book "The Gift of Anger". Only today I realize more what a wonderful and heartfelt gift is hidden in this book. To recognize the gift in our shadows "gifts or presents". Arun Gandhi tells many stories about Mahatma Gandhi in his book which are heartwarming. I can only recommend it!

Sand Talk is an "out of the box thinking" book. It shares insights in an approach that is easy to understand, however the many stories contain deep hidden truth of existence. Overall one of the best written books about spirituality, awakening and indigenous thinking.

Seth Speaks

Jane Roberts’ world-famous messages from Seth, an energy personality core. If you want to look beyond today's science, this is the right place. A book that expands your own horizons and makes you dream and think.

Osho: THe Secret of the Secrets

This transmission is one of my all-time favorites by Osho. I consumed the 40-hour audiobook version within a week. You can also get the Kindle or Book version. I recommend the audio version because Osho speaks everything to a live audience.

Becoming Supernatural

Dr. Joe Dispenza is definitely one of the most sought-after people of our time. In his bestseller, he explains how ordinary people achieve the unusual. A wonderful book full of stories.

The Occult I Ching

I have always been fascinated by snakes and serpents. Maja D'Aoust created an excellent piece of art here. You can use the stories of the I Ching in this book for personal contemplation, insights, and breakthroughs.

In the Yugas, it is all about the keys to understanding our hidden past, emerging energy age, and enlightened future. Not a lot of transmissions and books kept me reading as much as this work, initiated by the work of Sri Yukteswar and Yogananda.

Human Design - Circuitry

Welcome to a complete human design guide to Circuits, Channels, and Gates by Gene Keys Founder Richard Rudd. This book works wonders for anyone working with the Gene Keys and would love an introduction to Human Design.

The Jeshua Channelings

Wherever "Channelings" is written on the packaging, I am very reserved. But I was interested in a book about Jeshua—better known as Jesus Christ. Pamela Kribbe writes very beautifully and I was captivated by the work from beginning to end.

The Big Five for Life

One of the best spiritual books that I always remember positively, because it shows how beautiful the world could be. Find our what really counts in life in this book by John Strelecky.

Conversations with god

I caught this world bestseller, which sold over 20 million copies, in the summer of 2018 on Cyprus and left the complete work there. I found it very beautifully written, always full of surprises, so I never stopped reading it. It’s no wonder that the spiritual work sold so many times.

Home with God

5. Best for Spiritual Growth: " The Wisdom of Insecurity "

"One of those spiritual books that explains the inexplicable while making it relevant."

Book cover of "The Wisdom of Insecurity" by Alan Watts

Alan Watts is a prominent figure in the field of Eastern religion, spirituality, and philosophy, best known for his scholarly work, spiritual talks, and hosting a 1960s TV series “Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life." He has authored 25 spirituality books for beginners and Western readers, although “ The Way of Zen ” and “The Wisdom of Insecurity” are touted as his best works.

Who is it best for: spiritual seekers, existential thinkers, and readers curious about Eastern philosophical concepts

Key Message: Embracing the impermanence and uncertainty of life is liberating and leads to spiritual growth and wisdom.

"The Wisdom of Insecurity" attempts to point out the flaws in our struggle for certainty in a world perpetually in flux. The book on spirituality argues that our relentless pursuit of security obstructs spiritual growth and keeps us from fully experiencing the present moment, which is, in his view, the only reality. Watts exhibits exceptional clarity in his writing, skillfully employing metaphors to convey complex concepts.

The book’s greatest strength is its fusion of Western and Eastern philosophical traditions, complemented with science and psychology whenever relevant. While the chapters 'The Wisdom of the Body' and 'Creative Morality' stand out as particularly enlightening, every section imparts a thought-provoking message. However, it’s worth noting that this isn’t one of those spirituality books with step-by-step instructions and exercises.

Takeaway: “Wisdom of Insecurity” is an engaging guide to spirituality for those who believe self-reflection is the best path to understanding themselves and the world around them. We’d recommended it as one of the best spirituality books to ponder life’s fundamental questions.

"A compact and powerful spiritual book that is best savored one chapter at a time."

Book cover of "Freedom from the Known" by Jiddu Krishnamurti

This book is a compilation of passages from his talks on various topics. "Freedom from the known," as the title suggests, helps us identify those known aspects that bind us and keep us imprisoned for life. If we can observe our life as it is, without any judgments or analysis, we can recognize how our past conditioning feeds our fears, desires, pleasures, and pains.

Who is it best for: anyone who enjoys thought-provoking spiritual literature and self-introspection

Key Message: Experiencing true freedom by letting go of our conditioned beliefs, prejudices, and attachments.

In this critically acclaimed spiritual book, Krishnamurti advocates focusing our energy on who we are rather than who we wish to become. He points out the flaws in measuring ourselves and others against external standards, particularly how it can turn a relationship into a clash of two fabricated images. The idealized versions create suffering, drain our vitality, and keep us from experiencing an enriching and blissful union with both ourselves and other human beings.

Simply put, the book centers on transcending the "known" aspects of our lives that hinder spiritual growth and awakening. One of the book’s best passages explores ‘resetting our being’ by embracing the newness of each day and letting go of the past. It asserts that our failure to accept this 'dying of everything' is precisely why we are incapable of fully experiencing love or freedom.

Takeaway: “Freedom from the Known” encourages readers to use self-study and non-judgmental observation to reconnect with their inner seat of experience. It's not a breezy read that percolates but a spiritual guide you return to often to take bite-size chunks to mull over.

What we think

In "Falling Upward," Rohr describes spiritual growth as a two-part process that relates to the two halves of life. The first half, he suggests, is a life focused on structuring ego-driven motivations with discipline to move “up.” The next phase is falling, by giving back what you have developed to society. The core idea of the book is to allow the ego to create a “container” for the first half of life, followed by emptying the contents of the container, which Rohr believes leads to “falling upwards” – growth towards God.

Both young adults and people going through midlife transitions will relate to Rohr’s practical and hands-on ideas over some of the more ascetic or austere interpretations of spiritual growth and enlightenment. It’s also worth noting that Rohr’s spiritual teachings transcend religious denominations and maintain an interfaith appeal. In fact, "Falling Upward" derives insights from various spiritual traditions, making it relevant to people from different beliefs and backgrounds.

Frankl illustrates how to re-frame grief into hope and find purpose in any situation. Its message has cross-cultural appeal and enduring relevance, and there’s adequate guidance for those who need help in navigating suffering and discovering purpose.

The 20 Best Spiritual Books of All Time — Food For The Soul

Best Spiritual Books of All Time

It’s quite a big claim to say that here are the 20 Best Spiritual Books of All Time. There are so many wonderful spiritual books, and there are even more not-so-good New Age “remixes” of ancient, timeless wisdom. Perhaps, I should have called it 20 of The Best Spiritual Books of All Time, since after all it is only my personal selection. However, I do believe I have compiled a pretty solid list of genuine classics among the very best spiritual books available today. There is something for everyone here.

In this modern age of rampant consumerism, endless to-do-lists, fast-living, and technological addiction, there seems to be little time left for peaceful, introspective moments of quiet contemplation or for asking who we really are or what we really, truly want in life. Depression and suicide rates have sky-rocketed and many people suffer from chronic mental, emotional and physical un-wellness.

Yet, we all still have an innate sense that there is more to life, that perhaps we are missing something, even if this feeling is deeply buried under layers of intellectualisation and so-called rational thinking, or simply suffocated under the quicksand of constant distractions and entertainments.

Many of us are constantly seeking happiness or answers, perhaps in religion, perhaps in Eastern spiritual traditions or perhaps just in the subtle delusion that somehow our minds and thinking can work things out and finally make us happy. That is the trick of our minds — they have gone from being a useful tool to completely ruling our lives and ultimately making many people miserable, covering up the endless joy and bliss that we all have deep within.

Unfortunately, we have also been programmed since birth into believing what others tell us; our cultures, our parents, our religion, our school teachers, our friends and so on. All this education and conditioning are just mental structures, and our deep-seated beliefs, particularly strong religious beliefs, are actually blocks to what could be called true spiritual realization, enlightenment, or simply just being.

We have become so enamored with doing that we have forgotten the pure bliss and joy of being. Religions arise from a deep “knowing” that there is so much more to life than the physical, and this need to reconnect with being, with the timeless. But, unfortunately religions get corrupted by greed and the desire to control the masses, so their true message and essence gets buried in dogma and ritual. Of course, a sincere practitioner of any religion can, I believe, find spiritual realization, but not by sticking to rigid dogma and belief structures.

In the context of self-healing and well-being, it has been demonstrated in many studies that people who follow a spiritual path or who have religious beliefs, have a better chance at recovery from chronic illness like cancer and better long-term survival than those who don’t. At the very least, they are perhaps better-equipped to endure the suffering and maybe even transcend it as well.

Anyway, let’s get on with it and read some truly inspired words from spiritual masters! Without further ado, here is my list of what I have personally found to be some of the most profound and wonderful spiritual books. They are in no particular order, and each person will find that particular books resonate with them more than others. What you like can also depend on what you feel in the mood for reading at the time.

Autobiography of a Yogi is a beautifully written and highly inspirational account of an exceptional life, and a profound introduction to the ancient science of Yoga and meditation. It is perhaps the most profoundly inspiring book that I have ever read, it is vastly entertaining whether or not you believe the stories, warmly humorous and filled with stories of extraordinary yogis and other personages.

Autobiography of a Yogi is the book that first inspired me to practice Kriya Yoga, which has been called “The Lightening Path”, as it is considered by some to be the fastest path to Self-Realisation or Evolution. Here are links to what I consider to be the best books on Kriya Yoga:

2.    Be As You Are: The Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi — Editor: David Godman

Be As You Are - The Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi (Editor: David Godman)

Sri Ramana Maharshi’s highest ‘teachings’, to those capable and ready to receive them, consisted of nothing but silence during which he transmitted a flow of power that enabled individuals to directly experience enlightenment. This direct enlightened transmission is called darshan. Sri Ramana emphasized that his verbal teachings were only given to those who could not understand his silence.

Silence can’t be made into a book, but his teachings on Atma Vichara (self-inquiry) primarily, and other methods, were written down by his followers and subsequently made into books. Sri Ramana dismisses meditation and mantras as a way of attaining self-realisation, saying that they merely side-track the mind from the real issue of ‘Who am I?’

We need to look deep within and dwell on this question, quietening the mind, so that as thoughts arise we ask “to whom do these thoughts arise?” He says all thoughts begin with the “I” thought, (I, me and mine), which arises from the ego. As we quieten the mind and thoughts subside, the ego subsides into the Self.

By constantly dwelling on the question “who am I”, even as we go about our daily lives, we eventually come to a point where the “I” thought and the ego are permanently subsumed. Self-realisation is not something to be “discovered” or “attained”; it is already there to be uncovered and experienced. This discovery makes us merely a witness to everything we see and experience without being affected by it, just as a cinema screen is unaffected by the scenes which are depicted on it.

Be As You Are: The Teachings of Sri Ramana Maharishi is by far the best introduction to one of the most important spiritual masters who ever lived. For many people it is a life-changing book, while for others it’s approach is too radical or simple (but not easy!). It could be said that the entire book could be condensed into a single page, or even a single sentence, but such is the nature of many true teachings. The mind hankers after complicated concepts to think about, so we need to hear a simple powerful teaching over and over again from different angles until finally, hopefully we will get it.

3.    Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda — Swami Vivekananda

Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda - Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda, the nineteenth-century Indian Hindu monk, is regarded in India as a saint and is one of the most influential people of modern India and Hinduism. He spoke at the first Parliament of World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893, where he made a huge impression. The lectures of Vivekananda shook The United States and the whole world. After the Parliament, Vivekananda immediately became a hero in America. He then traveled throughout the United States and England lecturing and giving the Western world his teachings on Vedanta that seemed customized for the particular needs of the western mind.

The first book that I ever read on Vedanta philosophy was a small book by Swami Vivekananda called What is Religion? , which I bought from the Vivekananda Ashram in Almora, India. That book gave me many profound realisations and it shifted my spiritual interest from mostly Buddhism to include Yoga and Vedanta. I then read several more books by Swami Vivekananda.

4.    I Am That — Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

I Am That - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, translated by Maurice Frydman

“When I look inside and see that I am nothing, that is wisdom. When I look outside and see that I am everything, that is love. And between these two, my life turns.” — Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

This collection of the timeless teachings of one of the greatest sages of India, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, is a testament to the uniqueness of the seer’s life and work and is regarded by many as a modern spiritual classic. I Am That (first published in 1973) continues to draw new audiences and to enlighten seekers anxious for self-realization.

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj was a teacher who did not propound any ideology or religion, but gently unwrapped the mystery of the self. His message was simple, direct, and sublime. I Am That preserves his dialogues with the followers who came from around the world seeking guidance in destroying false identities.

The sage’s sole concern was with the human suffering and the ending of suffering. It was his mission to guide the individual to an understanding of his true nature and the timelessness of being. He taught that the mind must recognize and penetrate its own state of being–not “being this or that, here or there, then or now,” but just timeless being.

A simple man, Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj was a householder and petty storekeeper in Bombay where he died in 1981 at the age of 84. He had not been educated formally but came to be respected and loved for his insights into the crux of human pain and for the extraordinary lucidity of his direct disclosure.

Hundreds of diverse seekers traveled the globe and sought him out in his unpretentious home in Bombay (now called Mumbai) to hear him. To all of them, he gave hope that “beyond the real experience is not the mind, but the self, the light in which everything appears … the awareness in which everything happens.”

In the humble abode of Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj, but for the electric lights and the noises of the street traffic, one would not know in which period of human history one dwells. There is an atmosphere of timelessness about his tiny room; the subjects discussed are timeless — valid for all times; the way they are expounded and examined is also timeless; the centuries, millennia and yugas fall off and one deals with matters immensely ancient and eternally new.

The discussions held and teachings given would have been the same ten thousand years ago and will be the same ten thousand years hence. There will always be conscious beings wondering about the fact of their being conscious and enquiring into its cause and aim. Whence am I? Who am I? Whither am I? Such questions have no beginning and no end. And it is crucial to know the answers, for without a full understanding of oneself, both in time and in timelessness, life is but a dream, imposed on us by powers we do not know, for purposes we cannot grasp.

I Am That is a legacy from a unique teacher who helps the reader to a clearer understanding of himself as he comes to Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj with the age-old question, “Who am I?” Seekers were never turned away from the humble abode of Maharaj during his life and can still find their answers to this timeless question in the pages of this book today.

5.    A Course in Miracles — Helen Schucman (Scribe)

A Course in Miracles: Based on the Original Handwritten Notes of Helen Schucman - Complete & Annotated Edition - Circle of Atonement

A Course in Miracles has become a contemporary spiritual classic. Truths are recognized in its words that readers had never heard before, yet somewhere inside seemed to have always known.

A Course in Miracles is a complete self-study spiritual thought system. It teaches that the way to universal love and peace is through forgiving others. The Course thus focuses on the healing of relationships and making them holy through changing the student’s mind and perceptions. It trains our mind to undo fear. The undoing of fear is difficult at first, but the end result is deep peace, ever-growing gratitude and experiences of fulfilling a purpose that brings us great joy.

If you are on a spiritual journey seeking enlightenment, then A Course in Miracles will teach you why you are here and where you should be headed. Although the Course uses Christian terminology, it is ultimately not a religious text, but rather a manual to change our wrong perceptions and reveal the truth about who and what we really are.

A Course in Miracles is one of the most informative and enlightening courses about spiritual awaking and Oneness with your Higher Self, Holy Spirit or whatever you prefer to call that unnameable Being. Many will find the course very challenging, especially if you are new to spiritual learning. I tried twice to read it, and it was only on the third attempt after three years that I really got into it.

The suggested order of reading is Text, then Workbook, then Manual for Teachers, but some people recommend practicing the daily lessons in the Workbook concurrently with reading the main Text as they can help comprehension of the Text. I started this way, but now I have decided to focus on study of the complete Text first, and I think that is easier.

The whole teaching of A Course in Miracles can be summed up in the brief introduction to the text: “Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.” In the words of Eckhart Tolle, if you fully understand this, not just intellectually but on the level of experience or realisation, then you have no need to read and study the text, though you still might enjoy reading it!

There are several editions of the text, which have been edited quite differently from the original notes made when Jesus spoke through Helen Schucman. The most popular version, first published in 1976 by the Foundation for Inner Peace (FIP), is the one I originally started with. However, in the process of editing for publication, roughly forty-five thousand words were edited out, mostly from the first seven chapters of the Text, and the wording of the first four chapters was edited to the point where only about a fifth of their sentences retained their original wording.

While the FIP version is fine, there are less heavily edited versions that keep more of the original essence. The Thetford/Sparkly edition is excellent and you can get a free PDF copy at https://www.acimsearch.org/ or order a soft-cover copy for only US$20 at Diamond Clear Vision Books .

Also, a wonderful and entertaining companion book to help you grasp the meaning of A Course in Miracles is The Disappearance of the Universe: Straight Talk about Illusions, Past Lives, Religion, Sex, Politics, and the Miracles of Forgiveness — Gary R. Renard . If you read this book first it will help you understand the Course more easily.

6.    Bhagavad Gita — Sage Vyasa (Translator & Commentator: Paramahansa Yogananda)

God Talks With Arjuna: The Bhagavad Gita, Royal Science of God Realization God Talks With Arjuna: The Bhagavad Gita - Paramahansa Yogananda - Paramahansa Yogananda

Before reading the Bhagavad Gita you might find it a helpful preparation to read The Upanishads: Breath of the Eternal — Translator: Swami Prabhavananda . This beautiful, clear, magical translation, first published in 1948 still remains one of the most popular .

The Upanishads: Breath of the Eternal - Swami Prabhavananda

The principal texts selected and translated from the original Sanskrit, Upanishad means “sitting near devotedly”, which conjures images of the contemplating student listening with rapt attention to the teachings of a spiritual master. These are widely considered to be philosophical and spiritual meditations of the highest order.

The Upanishads reflect pure Vedanta, one of the highest aspects of spiritual truth. There are no personal Gods, no Christ, Rama or Krishna. The teachings are very ancient, back from before the written word. The twelve major Upanishads are listed in mostly traditional order: Katha, Isha, Kena, Prasna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Taittiriya, Aitaeya, Chandogya, Brihadaranyaka, Swetasvatara, Kaivalya.

7.    Patanjali Yoga Sutra — Sage Patanjali (Translator: Hariharananda Aranya)

Yoga Philosophy of Patanjali - Swami Hariharananda Aranya

8.    The Dhammapada — Gautama Buddha (Translator: Gil Fronsdal)

The Dhammapada - Gil Fronsdal

The Dhammapada, the most widely read Buddhist scripture in existence, conveys the practical and philosophical foundations of the earliest period of Buddhism in India, and is enjoyed by Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.

The Dhammapada presents two distinct goals for leading a spiritual life: the first is to attain happiness in this or future lives; and the second goal is spiritual liberation, freedom, and absolute peace and bliss or Nirvana.

Many of the verses are presented in dichotomies, for example, grief and suffering versus joy; developing the mind rather than being negligent about one’s mental attitude; virtuous action versus misconduct; and being truthful versus being deceitful. The purpose of these contrasts is, simply, to explain the difference between what leads to desirable outcomes and what leads to suffering.

9.    The Zen Teaching of Huang-Po: On the Transmission of Mind — Translator: John Blofield

The Zen Teaching of Huang Po - John Blofield (Translator)

This is the absolute classic text on Zen — one book to rule them all! If you read only one Zen book, let it be this one. Nowhere is the use of paradox in Zen illustrated better than in the teaching of Huang Po, who shows how the experience of intuitive knowledge that reveals to a man what he is cannot be communicated by words. With the help of these paradoxes, beautifully and simply presented in this collection, Huang Po could set his disciples on the right path. It is in this fashion that the Zen master leads his listener into truth, often by a single phrase designed to destroy his particular demon of ignorance.

10.    The Truth Is — Sri H. W. L. Poonja

The Truth Is - Sri H.W.L. Poonja

This book is not for everybody. If you want ‘tips’ and ‘techniques’ to find bliss, then do not even venture anywhere near this book. But if you want to ‘get it’ NOW, then you will find this book illuminating and exhilirating.

Sri Poonja goes straight to the issue – your liberation is NOW and your mind is in your way of realising that. You can never ‘think’ or ‘act’ in order to realise your true self. He points out as clearly as the limitations of words allow anybody to – the reason for all our suffering is listening to our mind. By ‘observing’ and ‘being aware’ the false falls away and the truth remains. The title ‘Truth Is’ says it all – ‘Truth is What IS’.

Our conditioning and thought patterns lead us to believe that we have to ‘do’ something, ‘practice’ something and enlightenment will be achieved some day in the future. That is an illusion. The path and the goal are right here and right now. You need to stop attaching importance to your thoughts, feelings and emotions and just observe the play of all these in your life. Sri Poonja conveys all of this and many other insights beautifully. He leaves one no crutches to hang on and removes all the usual avenues of escape that the mind uses.

Of course, the message he conveys is not new. What is different is that he conveys the message from his very own real experience and it does not come from his intelluct but from his very being. In that, he stands right up there with Sri Ramana Maharshi, J Krishnamurti and Eckhart Tolle.

11.    The Power of Now — Eckhart Tolle

The Power of Now - Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle is one of my favorite authors and teachers. When I first read this book back in 2001, I thought it was just okay, but I guess the time wasn’t right. At the time I was more interested in more exotic, esoteric books on yoga and Tibetan Buddhism. Then a couple of years ago I got the audiobook version narrated by Eckhart Tolle and it blew my mind!! I’ve listened to it three or four times now along with a New Earth and other teachings.

best spiritual books reviews

Finally, a warning! You can find many negative reviews about Eckhart Tolle and his books. In fact, it is the only “New Age” spiritual book that I have included, apart from, you could say, A Course in Miracles . Many say that the message of The Power of Now could be written in less than a page, and some even go as far to say that he is an egotistical fraud! I personally think his attackers would do well to examine their own minds and what causes them to produce such criticisms — perhaps he is a mirror reflecting back at them what they don’t like to see.

While some the other books on this list may have more diverse and interesting content, the simple message of this book has profoundly spoken to me and to millions of others. These days we want to be entertained and our minds desire lots of complex ideas to think about, so we can miss the beauty of simplicity. Spiritual teachers often do repeat more or less the same thing over and over, and you may say that it is brainwashing (sometimes it is), but we have already been brainwashed by society and we have a lot of unhelpful and self-limiting beliefs. Reading, hearing and contemplating these teachings again and again can help us to wake up.

12.    The Mathnawi of Jalalu’ddin Rumi — Jalâl ud Dîn Rûmî (Translator: Reynold A. Nicholson)

The Mathnawi of Jalalu'ddin Rumi

The Mathnawi is Rumi’s 13th century classic of Sufi spirituality. Jalalud’din Rumi, born 1205 in Balkh, now Turkestan, was founder of the Mevlevi order of Sufi Dervishes. He was known among followers as “Mevlana” or “Our Master”. The Mathnawi , “Song of the Reed” is often referred to as the Koran in Persian, and ranks among the classics of world spiritual literature.

The Mathnawi , covering several volumes, is an ingenious series of allegories, fables, parables and tales, often no more than a page or two in length. The sprawling scope of the subjects covered include everything from accounts of the famous saints of Islam, Christianity and Judaism; told in symbolic and allegorical form to deeply mystical interpretations of life and a renewed call to faith.

The quality of the writing is best described as ecstatic prose verse. They are rich with detail about the cultural life of the period. Rumi dictated the series to a scribe, after the loss of his closest friend, guide and spiritual companion, Shams of Tabriz.

This translation of The Mathnawi by Nicholson is still widely regarded as the best and most accurate to the original Farsi language.

13.    Tao De Ching — Lao Tzu (Translator: Red Pine)

Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu (Translator: Red Pine)

Lao-tzu’s (ca. 600 BCE) Tao Te Ching is an essential volume of world literature, and Red Pine’s nuanced and authoritative English translation — reissued and published with the Chinese text en face — is one of the best-selling versions. Features that set this apart from other translations are its commentaries by scores of Taoist scholars, poets, monks, recluses, adepts, and emperors spanning more than two thousand years. “I envisioned this book,” Red Pine notes in his introduction, “as a discussion between Lao-tzu and a group of people who have thought deeply about his text.”

14.    The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna — Swami Nikhilananda

The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna - Swami Nikhilananda (Translator)

The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna as translated by Swami Nikhilananda offers the reader a penetrating view into the spiritual wisdom of India. On account of his deep mystical experiences and constant absorption in God, Sri Ramakrishna (1836 – 1886) is regarded as being of the stature of Krishna, Buddha, and Christ. The Gospel is the record of Sri Ramakrishna’s conversations, which are unique in their breadth and depth. Profound spiritual truths are described in simple words and vivid stories, revealing the divinity of man and the spiritual foundation of the universe. This volume is a mine of inspiration, wisdom, theology, and metaphysics.

15.    In This Very Life — Sayadaw U. Pandita

In This Very Life: The Liberation Teachings of the Buddha -- Sayadaw U. Pandita

This is the definitive guidance of one of the greatest meditation masters of our time in the form of a book. Burmese meditation master Sayadaw U Pandita shows us that freedom is as immediate as breathing, as fundamental as a footstep. In this book he describes the path of the Buddha and calls all of us to that heroic journey of liberation. Enlivened by numerous case histories and anecdotes, In This Very Life is a matchless guide to the inner territory of meditation – as described by the Buddha.

“This is a truly alive transmission of the Buddha’s teachings, a direct and explicit guide to the freeing of the mind here and now. The Buddha’s teachings can be realized by each one of us, and In This Very Life shows us how.” (Joseph Goldstein, author of One Dharma and A Heart Full of Peace )

“A classic, beautifully edited compilation. Useful stories and profound understanding illuminate and contextualize practitioners’ meditative experience. The author brings to life many of the essential teachings of the Buddha, presenting them in a clear, organized, and inspiring way. Beginning or advanced students will learn teachings they have not encountered before, clarify points they have, and increase confidence, which in turn can lead to the development of concentration and insight.

The book includes basic meditation instructions and discussions of ways to deepen one’s practice and strengthen the forces that bring about enlightenment. In This Very Life also provides glimpses of the landscape of deepening wisdom and an illuminated mind.” (Inquiring Mind)

16.    The Cycle of Day and Night — Namkhai Norbu

The Cycle of Day and Night - Namkhai Norbu

The Cycle Of Day And Night by Namkhai Norbu is a practical guide to a fundamental practice of the Dzogchen system of Tibetan Buddhism, presented in a clear and direct manner, written by an acknowledged contemporary master of this ancient tradition.

Central to Dzogchen, the Great Perfection, is contemplation, the immediate experience of the primordial state of the individual, the unconditioned nature of the mind. This nature of the mind transcends the specific contents of mind, the incessant flow of thoughts reflecting our social, cultural, and psychological conditioning.

“Based on the teaching by Garab Dorje, the first human master of the Dzogchen lineage, The Cycle Of Day And Night gives a translation of the author’s Tibetan Text, together with a commentary drawn from the author’s extensive oral explanations. Actual methods are given for entering into contemplation and integrating it with our activities during the 24 hour cycle of day and night.” Midwest Book Review

17.    The Way of a Pilgrim — Anonymous and Olga Savin (Translator)

The Way of a Pilgrim and The Pilgrim Continues His Way - Anonymous and Olga Savin (Translator)

This classic of world spiritual literature is the firsthand account of a pilgrim’s journey as he endeavors to live out Saint Paul’s instruction to “pray without ceasing.” The narrator, an unnamed nineteenth-century peasant, sets out on his pilgrimage with nothing but a Bible, a rosary, and some dried bread. As he walks, he recites the Jesus prayer (“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”)—a prayer that is said to quiet anxiety and fill the heart with love for all creation. With this prayer constantly on his lips, the pilgrim undergoes a profound spiritual education. This edition includes the sequel to The Way of a Pilgrim, entitled A Pilgrim Continues His Way, which contains a lengthy appendix reviewing the teachings of the Holy Fathers on the Jesus prayer.

If you prefer a more Eastern approach to the practice of contemplation on the Divine with the Continuous Prayer then I highly recommend The Essential Swami Ramdas — Swami Ramdas, Susunaga Weeraperuma (Compiled by) .

18.    The First and Last Freedom — J. Krishnamurti

The First and Last Freedom - J Krishnamurti

If truth can set us free, where do we find it? In The First and Last Freedom , Krishnamurti argues that we will not find truth in formal institutions, nor in organised religions and their dogmas, nor in any guru or outside authority; for, according to Krishnamurti, truth can only be realised through self-understanding.

Controversial and challenging, yet always enlightening, Krishnamurti guides us through society’s common concerns, such as suffering and fear, love and loneliness, sex and death, the meaning of life, the nature of God, and personal transformation – consistently relating these topics to the essential search for pure truth and perfect freedom. This classic philosophical and spiritual study offers wisdom and insights particularly suited to our own uncertain times.

19.    Inner Engineering: A Yogi’s Guide to Joy — Sadhguru

Inner Engineering, A Yogi's Guide to Joy - Sadhguru

Inner Engineering is a New York Times bestseller, named one of the ten best books of 2016 by Spirituality & Health . Thought leader, visionary, philanthropist, mystic, and yogi Sadhguru presents Western readers with a time-tested path to achieving absolute well-being: the classical science of yoga.

The practice of hatha yoga, as we commonly know it, is but one of eight branches of the body of knowledge that is yoga. In fact, yoga is a sophisticated system of self-empowerment that is capable of harnessing and activating inner energies in such a way that your body and mind function at their optimal capacity. It is a means to create inner situations exactly the way you want them, turning you into the architect of your own joy.

A yogi lives life in this expansive state, and in this transformative book Sadhguru tells the story of his own awakening, from a boy with an unusual affinity for the natural world to a young daredevil who crossed the Indian continent on his motorcycle. He relates the moment of his enlightenment on a mountaintop in southern India, where time stood still and he emerged radically changed.

Today, as the founder of Isha, an organization devoted to humanitarian causes, Sadhguru lights the path for millions. The term guru, he notes, means “dispeller of darkness, someone who opens the door for you… As a guru, I have no doctrine to teach, no philosophy to impart, no belief to propagate. And that is because the only solution for all the ills that plague humanity is self-transformation. Self-transformation means that nothing of the old remains. It is a dimensional shift in the way you perceive and experience life.”

The wisdom distilled in this accessible, profound, and engaging book offers readers time-tested tools that are fresh, alive, and radiantly new. Inner Engineering presents a revolutionary way of thinking about our agency and our humanity and the opportunity to achieve nothing less than a life of joy.

20.    Yoga Vasistha — Sage Valmiki (Translator: Swami Venkatesananda)

Vasistha's Yoga - Swami Vivekananda

The Yoga Vasistha is a truly profound and wonderful scripture if you are ready for it, but it is not for the fainthearted and it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea! This is one of the greatest works of Indian religious philosophy, though it’s a book for the intellectually-inclined, and it is highly recommended by many spiritual teachers. This edition is over 700 pages long and it took me more than a year to read, just a few pages at a time.

The theme is part of the Advaita Vedanta tradition, expounding the indivisibility of all reality and of the manifested and unmanifested realms (the physical and the spiritual). The book constantly refers to the “infinite unconditioned consciousness,” and insists on the individual’s responsibility for his or her own spiritual advancement, and the supreme importance of self-enquiry to that end.

Vasistha says, “What appears as the world to the conditioned mind is seen by the unconditioned as Brahman.” The Yoga Vasistha is a bottomless well of delicious spiritual insight. It is full of allegorical stories within stories within stories and metaphors employed as a vehicle for the idea of the unity of reality, reiterated again and again from different points of view.

This edition of the Yoga Vasistha is beautifully-translated into English by Swami Venkatesananda. For a book this size I recommend the paperback rather than the Kindle version, and the reviews on Amazon say the Kindle version isn’t well-rendered, though it might have improved since then.

I can’t praise this book more eloquently than one reviewer on Amazon: “I would give this book infinite stars and I have never ever felt this way for a book or anything else in this world. Language fails to convey the greatness of this work. This alone, as the book proclaims, is enough to attain liberation par excellence. I say this with absolute certainty and confidence that the whole world should stop doing whatever they are doing and stop reading whatever they are reading and just read this book and it alone. Read one page of it a day; the whole world would be a different place and this is guaranteed. I would make reading this book mandatory, for it does not contain any doctrine nor does it ask the reader to assume anything. It is naked truth itself and without any veiling. It is the holiest of all holy books. I really can’t say anymore. This has to be read and understood by he who reads. Live with this book.”

Kelly Link Returns with a Dreamlike, Profoundly Beautiful Novel

In “The Book of Love,” the Pulitzer finalist and master of short stories pushes our understanding of what a fantasy novel can be.

By Amal El-Mohtar

Amal El-Mohtar is the Book Review’s science fiction and fantasy columnist, a Hugo Award-winning writer and the co-author, with Max Gladstone, of “This Is How You Lose the Time War.”

THE BOOK OF LOVE , by Kelly Link

A certain weight of expectation accrues on writers of short fiction who haven’t produced a novel, as if the short story were merely the larval stage of longer work. No matter how celebrated the author and her stories, how garlanded with prizes and grants, the sense persists: She will eventually graduate from the short form to the long. After an adolescence spent munching milkweed in increments of 10,000 words or less, she will come to her senses and build the chrysalis required for a novel to emerge, winged and tender, from within.

Now Kelly Link — an editor and publisher, a recipient of a MacArthur “genius grant” and the author of five story collections, one of which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist — has produced a novel. Seven years in the making, “The Book of Love” — long, but never boring — enacts a transformation of a different kind: It is our world that must expand to accommodate it, we who must evolve our understanding of what a fantasy novel can be.

Reviewing “The Book of Love” feels like trying to describe a dream. It’s profoundly beautiful, provokes intense emotion, offers up what feel like rooted, incontrovertible truths — but as soon as one tries to repeat them, all that’s left are shapes and textures, the faint outlines of shifting terrain.

Still, here goes: Set in 2014, in a small Massachusetts town called Lovesend, “The Book of Love” is the story of three local teenagers (and one stowaway) who return from the dead and must compete for the prize of remaining alive by completing a series of magical tasks.

It’s the story of the parents, siblings and lovers of those teenagers, the people who mourned them for the year they were gone and now, magically, have had those memories of grief replaced: The teens were never dead, they were only studying abroad.

It’s the story of the wizard-priests who guard either side of the door to the world of the dead; one of them is the teens’ high school music teacher, who must now instruct them in magic if they’re to survive.

It’s the story of a fey, cruel moon goddess who’s lost the key to her larder of souls, and the young man, now hundreds of years old, who bound himself to her service in exchange for a promise of revenge.

It’s the story of two sisters, one of whom is part of the undead trio, who can’t speak without hurting or irritating each other, but who also need each other, are lost without each other.

“The Book of Love” is made up of smaller books: Each character perspective is presented as “The Book of [character name],” with surprising detours into the interiority of objects or concepts. This might suggest discrete accounts with clear divisions between them, but the reality is more complex: These books are in conversation with one another, their lives interleaved.

Susanna and Laura Hand, the sisters, are in a band with Daniel Knowe, who’s been secretly dating Susanna but is opaquely detested by Mo Gorch, who is close friends with the girl Laura has a deep crush on — the girl Susanna kissed out of spite. They’ve all known one another since childhood, and they’re all on the cusp of adulthood. Tugging the story forward through these relationships are the questions of how Laura, Daniel and Mo died, why they came back, who or what slipped out of death alongside them, and what they all have to do to stay on this side of the grave.

It’s common to read a book with a strong sense of place and say that the setting is a character in the story. But in “The Book of Love,” it’s more correct to say that characters provide the story’s setting: Each “Book” is a dwelling place to experience a life, and taken together, the result is immense. As C.S. Lewis wrote of heaven and John Crowley wrote of fairyland, the further in you go, the bigger it gets — an experience that recalls the process of getting to know a person.

So much of Link’s work steps lightly, a tempering of the commonplace with vivid, delicate surprise. In a 2023 profile for Vulture , Link observed: “The novel hardens as you go on. … At a certain point the ambitions, even the shape, begin to feel inevitable. The short story stays fluid.” I kept waiting for the novel to harden as it went on, but it never did; every sentence remained a springboard for new sound, piano keys rising and falling in new variations. In one chapter, a man summons his lover by playing wrong notes in an old song; Link’s project here sometimes feels like that, resisting an expected shape by leaning out of resolving cadences and into bumps, splinters, question marks.

“Don’t be ashamed of the things that you unabashedly love in narrative,” Link said in a 2019 speech. “Investigate them with a loving heart.” Investigating romance novels, small towns, families, the friends and music you make in high school, fairy villains and fairy lovers, with fascinated tenderness and deep familiarity, “The Book of Love” does justice to its name. Its composition, its copiousness, suggests that love, in the end, contains all — that frustration, rage, vulnerability, loss and grief are love’s constituent parts, bound by and into it.
