Objectives for training: a guide to writing clear and effective goals

' src=

  • 5 minute read

Create effective training objectives to provide clarity and direction to your learners.

Learning and professional development is an essential part of any business, and it’s crucial to ensure that the training your company provides is effective and achieves its intended purpose. This is where setting clear and measurable training objectives comes in.  Objectives for training are specific goals that define what learners are expected to achieve by the time they’ve completed their training . Read on to explore what training objectives are, how they differ from training goals, the purpose of setting training objectives, how to write them, and examples of both objectives and goals.

Training objectives vs training goals

What is the purpose of setting training objectives, examples of training objectives, examples of training goals, key takeaways, what is a training objective.

A training objective is a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) statement that defines what learners are expected to achieve by the end of a training program . It is a clear description of the knowledge, skills, and behaviors that the learners should acquire or be able to demonstrate at the end of training. The training objectives you create should be aligned with the overall goals and objectives of your company or organization, and they should be relevant to your learners’ job roles.

While the terms “training objectives” and “training goals” are often used interchangeably, and are similar in nature, they are not identical.

Training objectives are specific, measurable, and time-bound statements that describe what learners are expected to achieve as a result of participating in a training program. Objectives are usually written from the learner’s perspective and focus on the desired outcomes of the training. You are able to measure results by numbers, percentages, or pass/fail outcomes.  Training goals, on the other hand, are broader statements that describe what the organization hopes to achieve through the training program. Goals are often written from the company or organization’s perspective, and focus on the big-picture outcomes that the training is intended to support. Goals can also be measured numerically or through pass/fail outcomes. Both training objectives and training goals are essential for designing and implementing effective training programs.

The purpose of setting training objectives is to provide clarity both for learners and managers. Clear training objectives inform learners what skills and knowledge they’re expected to gain from the training program, as well as what metrics will be used to evaluate if they gained that knowledge. In turn, managers have a clear direction on how to evaluate if the objective has been achieved or not. Key reasons why it’s important to set training objectives:

  • Clarify expectations Training objectives help to clarify what is expected of learners and what they need to achieve to complete the training program successfully. This clarity allows learners to stay focused on the desired outcomes and understand how the training will help them to develop new skills and knowledge.
  • Measure progress Training objectives provide a measurable way to track learners’ progress throughout the training program. By setting specific, measurable, and time-bound objectives, you can easily assess whether learners are achieving the desired outcomes and make any necessary adjustments to the training program to ensure that learners are on track.
  • Improve learning outcomes By taking time to write clear objectives for training before that training is rolled out, you’re compelled to evaluate if the program you’ve created matches the objective it’s supposed to achieve. This will help you identify any gaps in the training program before you initiate it, instead of after the fact.

How do you write training objectives?

Writing effective training objectives is critical to designing and implementing an effective training program. Here are some clear, actionable tips to creating training objectives:

  • Define the desired outcomes The first step in writing training objectives is to clearly define the desired outcomes of the training program. This involves identifying what learners need to know or be able to do by the end of the training program.
  • Use the SMART criteria The SMART criteria is a framework for setting effective objectives. SMART stands for S pecific, M easurable, A chievable, R elevant, and T ime-bound. Use this framework to ensure that your objectives are clear, actionable, and achievable within a specified time frame.
  • Write from the learner’s perspective When writing training objectives, it’s important to write from the learner’s perspective. Objectives should focus on what learners will be able to do or know by the end of the training program.
  • Use action verbs Use action verbs in your objectives to clearly describe what learners are expected to do. For example, use verbs like “identify,” “analyze,” “demonstrate,” or “evaluate.”
  • Keep it concise Training objectives should be concise and easy to understand. Use simple language and avoid jargon or technical terms that learners may not understand.
  • Prioritize objectives Prioritize your objectives based on their importance to the overall success of the training program. This will help to ensure that learners are focused on the most critical skills and knowledge.
  • Test your objectives Ask yourself if the objectives you’ve written align with your company’s overall goals, if the training they correspond to is enough for them to be achieved, and if they’re easy to understand by someone other than you.

Here are some examples of training objectives that are specific to learners in your company:

  • Recognize and respond to the 5 most common customer questions As a customer support specialist you will be trained on the most common customer questions and memorize the correct responses to them to be able to assist customers faster and more efficiently.
  • Double the number of upsell opportunities proposed during customer consultations As a sales representative in the field you will learn how to identify upsell opportunities when consulting with customers, and how to effectively communicate the value of our products and services to increase your average deal size.
  • Learn and implement techniques for securing your electronically stored data You will improve the overall security of your company laptop and/or phone by learning how to properly secure your electronically stored data and minimize the risk of breaches.
  • Identify workplace hazards and report them correctly You will learn to spot hazards in the workplace, and how to correctly document and report them to decrease the overall risk of workplace injury to yourself and others.

Here are some examples of training goals. Each goal corresponds to the example training objectives above, and shows how those objectives contribute to the overall company training goal:

  • Improve customer satisfaction rating By training all employees on the most common questions and complaints, the company’s overall rating should reach at least 4 stars by the end of the year.
  • Increase upsell revenue by 25% By training sales representatives on how to identify and approach upsell opportunities with customers, the overall company revenue from upsells should increase.
  • Improve overall company security By delivering cybersecurity training to all employees the security of the company’s data should improve and lead to fewer breaches.
  • Decrease the number of workplace accidents By training all employees on workplace hazards and how to prevent them, the overall number of accidents on job sites should decrease.

What are the 3 objectives of training?

The three objectives of training in an organization are:

  • Help each member of your team perform their job roles effectively
  • Improve overall performance
  • Increase the organization’s ability to achieve its goals and targets

What are SMART objectives of training?

SMART objectives are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound objectives that define what learners are expected to achieve by the end of a training program. SMART objectives help to ensure that the objectives are clear, measurable, and achievable.

From training objectives, to goals, to success

Setting clear training objectives is essential for any training program’s success. It's an amazing begin for peoples that need to have a first contact with the technical writing.

I enjoyed learning technical writing course from Coursera.

The entire "first week" is background information about the university and instructors, along with a short animation related to technical writing with no commentary that seems like it was made to be inserted into a video but was uploaded alone instead.

You can skip straight to Week 2 "Characteristics of Technical Writing" and not be any worse off for it.

", could've easily been combined with the course information in a text document or with "Characteristics of Technical Writing" for a more robust understanding of what technical writers do and how it relates to their writing.)

For how much the course tries to impress that technical writing should be clear, concise, and well-presented, it fails in nearly all of those aspects. It's not unwatchable and there's solid information to be found, but those are only part of what makes a quality educational video.

Great course and got great insights about Technical Writing.

Adding some Technical Writing Tools would have been even nicer.

This course was a great opportunity to learn the pros and cons of technical writing.

This course is very helpful for developing technical writing skill.

The course was very well structured... a perfect balance between theoretical and practical aspects of Technical Writing.

Moscow Business Plan Options

There are mainly two types of business plans that are written in Moscow: capital raising business plans and management or managerial business plans.

Raise Capital with a Business Plan

Most business plans are written with eye towards raising money for their venture. In a business plan that is written for investment capital, the structure of the business plans and therefore the most important point of the document will be the value-added benefit. Information on the products, services and the market will play central roles in the development of the plan, as well as various payout or exit strategies for the investors. Most business plans will focus on either selling equity or debt to investors.

  • Equity : In an equity business plan the company seeking funding will sell an ownership stake. If the company is a corporation, they will sell shares or common stock or a variation of them. If the company is a LLC or a Limited Company (which is popular worldwide) interest or units in the company would be offered. Both a form of ownership, just with a different name for each entity. In additional, there are other sweeteners one can add into any business plan offering, including warrants or preferred shares or preferred units or convertible debt.
  • Debt : in a debt offering business plan the company will be issuing some type of bond or a note to investors. A bond or note differ only in terms of the length of each security, which bonds being considered a longer maturity date than a note. There are also convertible debt securities that would convert the notes/bonds to equity at a certain fixed point in time. The business plan for bonds would detail the terms, such as the maturity date, interest rate and other vital information.

Managerial Guidance Business Plan

  • No Capital Raising : In a managerial or a management business plan, the focus is not on raising money but what strategy a company should employ. While most companies that write business plans do so to raise capital, there are some that simply want to get a second opinion or an outside view of their business. They ask us to write them a business plan for growth opportunities, not to raise money. Said another way, the management of the company wants to see our view and take on their business and what we would do to expand their company.
  • Recommendations : A business plan used to simply strategically plan one’s next move is referred to as managerial guidance business plan document. No capital is being raised initially, although sometimes we may conclude that capital should be raised for the company to penetrate or open new markets or opportunities. In the course of research, we may conclude that, in fact, the company should conduct an offering and raise money. We will recommend the amount to raise based on the company’s expansion needs and the company valuation.

Email etiquette and business writing course, email etiquette and business writing: crafting clear, correct, and courteous digital correspondence, available formats: full-day training course, course outcomes.

This email etiquette and business writing course will:

  • Address the importance of understanding readers.
  • Review such email conventions as effective subject lines, professional greetings, and readable formatting.
  • Discuss common errors in written English and how to avoid them.
  • Introduce participants to the basics of email and the law.

Course Overview

When information needs to be disseminated quickly, there’s no better way than by email. Unfortunately, with the benefit of speed come some problems that aren’t always predictable. This email etiquette and business writing course is designed to help employees create email messages that are understood as intended by the writer in a single reading. This program contains a heavy writing component. We recommend participants have access to computers during the session.

Program Objectives

At the program’s conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Explain instances when sending email is necessary and appropriate.
  • Describe what should not be discussed via email.
  • Determine who should and should not receive copies of emails.
  • Create an email subject line that accurately describes the content of the message.
  • Write in the active voice.
  • Avoid the most common mistakes people make in business writing.
  • Consider the visual components that enhance an email message and make for easy reading.
  • Know what to do when emails misfire and reach the wrong people.
  • Develop a personal action plan to improve their email skills at work.

The following outline highlights some of the course’s key learning points. As part of your training program, we will modify content as needed to meet your business objectives. Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of the participant materials prior to the session(s).

Workshop Outline

Before you start typing: what to send by email.

In this opening discussion, the facilitator will engage participants in exercises designed to measure their knowledge of email use at work. They will gain a clear understanding of circumstances that require formal written communication rather than email, and they will discuss the kinds of items they must never send electronically—on or off the job—without the risk of serious consequences.

What I’m Trying to Say: Creating an Accurate Subject Line

Like any other piece of business writing, a business email should present the “bottom line” immediately. One of the benefits of using email is that it enables the writer to succinctly state the purpose from the outset. In this part of the workshop, participants will learn the importance of providing a subject line that clearly and accurately reflects the content of the email message. During this seminar segment, group members will have ample opportunity to practice developing fitting subject lines based on the content of email samples they will receive from the instructor.

Polite, Short, Common, Active: Four Components of Strong Text

Email isn’t a novel, and it shouldn’t read like one. Unlike a thriller laden with suspense, email should get to the point and do it quickly. At the same time, its writer must adhere to the rules of good etiquette in order to avoid hurt feelings, an inappropriate tone, and other problems. This course segment looks at methods for creating polite, short, active text that uses commonly understood words.

It’s Still Business Writing: Common Errors to Avoid

Even if it’s an email message, electronic business writing must still adhere to the same standards established for hardcopy writing. In this portion of the course, participants will review 12 of the most common writing mistakes that find their way into business writing, and they will learn how to avoid them.

Looks Matter: Visual Considerations to Help the Reader

For an email to be visually appealing, white space is as important as the text it separates. This seminar segment looks at best practices for creating attractive text. In this part of the program, participants will work through a series of samples to improve their visual appeal and overall quality.

Before Clicking “Send”: Checking, Proofing, and Copying

Fast is fine, but email must still be re-read and revised before it is sent. In this workshop unit, participants will explore a range of tools to help them write with greater clarity and find errors before they hit the “send” button.

Damage Control: Rx for Bad Email Moments

Because email is fast, it lacks the advantage of giving the writer time to reconsider once the message zips through cyberspace. There are also occasions when a message is received by the wrong recipient. In this part of the course, participants will discuss measures they can take to offset the problems created by rogue emails.

Mailbox Know-How: Using Technology to Your Advantage

Even if you are the world’s greatest writer, if you can’t stay on top of your inbox, you will eventually encounter problems. This part of the course reviews a handful of tips and techniques for organizing messages, using templates, and leveraging automation to manage messages.

You’ve Got Mail: Plan for Improvement

In this final lesson, participants will design a personal action plan for improving their email skills. Serving as a ready reference, these individualized lists will assist them as they prepare business correspondence that positively represents them and their organizations.

At this program’s conclusion, participants should understand how to craft clear, correct, and courteous digital correspondence.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect and found it to be awesome. I am in business development and while I consider myself to be somewhat refined/savvy, I walked away with so many things to up my game while with clients and the number one lesson and tie back point is that it is 100% about making the client feel comfortable and special. What we do, how we act, how we present ourselves all feeds into that and our ultimate success as sales professionals.”

“Pamela was a gem! We really enjoyed it. The one main piece of feedback I got was they wanted more time.”

“Greg Jones was a DYNAMITE presenter! He was fun, knowledgeable, and engaging and had our large group of 50+ people laughing and participating right up until the 5:00 PM end time. “Laurie, as always, was AMAZING!”

“WOW – where do I begin!? Working with you both has been an outstanding experience throughout the entire process. Your flexibility from first contact was very valuable – we appreciate your willingness to participate in multiple teleconferences to align with KMG.

Your ability to link KMG’s message and philosophies to the lessons is what set you apart from your competitors.

Kate’s energy and willingness to meet as many of the attendees as possible and her ability to quickly build a rapport with folks established credibility and a safe environment. Everyone valued the ‘informalness’ of the key note.

The Tuesday workshop was phenomenal! I saw people taking notes that I never would have imagined would be engaged.

Fantastic result overall – thank you so very much!”

“Stefanie is knowledgeable, credible, fun and engaging as a facilitator.”

“Stefanie was upbeat, engaging, and relatable. She even kept the momentum going through an unexpected room change towards the end of our session. My colleagues cannot stop commenting how amazing the training was, and we are energized to put our new skills to work. Rave reviews all around!”
