What Is a Case Study? | Definition, Examples & Methods

A case study is a detailed study of a specific subject, such as a person, group, place, event, organization, or phenomenon. Case studies are commonly used in social, educational, clinical, and business research.

A case study research design usually involves qualitative methods , but quantitative methods are sometimes also used. Case studies are good for describing , comparing, evaluating and understanding different aspects of a research problem .

A case study is an appropriate research design when you want to gain concrete, contextual, in-depth knowledge about a specific real-world subject. It allows you to explore the key characteristics, meanings, and implications of the case.

Case studies are often a good choice in a thesis or dissertation . They keep your project focused and manageable when you don’t have the time or resources to do large-scale research.

You might use just one complex case study where you explore a single subject in depth, or conduct multiple case studies to compare and illuminate different aspects of your research problem.

Once you have developed your problem statement and research questions , you should be ready to choose the specific case that you want to focus on. A good case study should have the potential to:

  • Provide new or unexpected insights into the subject
  • Challenge or complicate existing assumptions and theories
  • Propose practical courses of action to resolve a problem
  • Open up new directions for future research

Unlike quantitative or experimental research , a strong case study does not require a random or representative sample. In fact, case studies often deliberately focus on unusual, neglected, or outlying cases which may shed new light on the research problem.

Example of an outlying case studyIn the 1960s the town of Roseto, Pennsylvania was discovered to have extremely low rates of heart disease compared to the US average. It became an important case study for understanding previously neglected causes of heart disease.

However, you can also choose a more common or representative case to exemplify a particular category, experience or phenomenon.

Example of a representative case studyIn the 1920s, two sociologists used Muncie, Indiana as a case study of a typical American city that supposedly exemplified the changing culture of the US at the time.

While case studies focus more on concrete details than general theories, they should usually have some connection with theory in the field. This way the case study is not just an isolated description, but is integrated into existing knowledge about the topic. It might aim to:

  • Exemplify a theory by showing how it explains the case under investigation
  • Expand on a theory by uncovering new concepts and ideas that need to be incorporated
  • Challenge a theory by exploring an outlier case that doesn’t fit with established assumptions

To ensure that your analysis of the case has a solid academic grounding, you should conduct a literature review of sources related to the topic and develop a theoretical framework . This means identifying key concepts and theories to guide your analysis and interpretation.

There are many different research methods you can use to collect data on your subject. Case studies tend to focus on qualitative data using methods such as interviews , observations , and analysis of primary and secondary sources (e.g., newspaper articles, photographs, official records). Sometimes a case study will also collect quantitative data.

Example of a mixed methods case studyFor a case study of a wind farm development in a rural area, you could collect quantitative data on employment rates and business revenue, collect qualitative data on local people’s perceptions and experiences, and analyze local and national media coverage of the development.

The aim is to gain as thorough an understanding as possible of the case and its context.

In writing up the case study, you need to bring together all the relevant aspects to give as complete a picture as possible of the subject.

How you report your findings depends on the type of research you are doing. Some case studies are structured like a standard scientific paper or thesis , with separate sections or chapters for the methods , results and discussion .

Others are written in a more narrative style, aiming to explore the case from various angles and analyze its meanings and implications (for example, by using textual analysis or discourse analysis ).

In all cases, though, make sure to give contextual details about the case, connect it back to the literature and theory, and discuss how it fits into wider patterns or debates.

Statistics - Data collection - Case Study Method

Case study research is a qualitative research method that is used to examine contemporary real-life situations and apply the findings of the case to the problem under study. Case studies involve a detailed contextual analysis of a limited number of events or conditions and their relationships. It provides the basis for the application of ideas and extension of methods. It helps a researcher to understand a complex issue or object and add strength to what is already known through previous research.

STEPS OF CASE STUDY METHOD

In order to ensure objectivity and clarity, a researcher should adopt a methodical approach to case studies research. The following steps can be followed:

Identify and define the research questions - The researcher starts with establishing the focus of the study by identifying the research object and the problem surrounding it. The research object would be a person, a program, an event or an entity.

Select the cases - In this step the researcher decides on the number of cases to choose (single or multiple), the type of cases to choose (unique or typical) and the approach to collect, store and analyze the data. This is the design phase of the case study method.

Collect the data - The researcher now collects the data with the objective of gathering multiple sources of evidence with reference to the problem under study. This evidence is stored comprehensively and systematically in a format that can be referenced and sorted easily so that converging lines of inquiry and patterns can be uncovered.

Evaluate and analyze the data - In this step the researcher makes use of varied methods to analyze qualitative as well as quantitative data. The data is categorized, tabulated and cross checked to address the initial propositions or purpose of the study. Graphic techniques like placing information into arrays, creating matrices of categories, creating flow charts etc. are used to help the investigators to approach the data from different ways and thus avoid making premature conclusions. Multiple investigators may also be used to examine the data so that a wide variety of insights to the available data can be developed.

Presentation of Results - The results are presented in a manner that allows the reader to evaluate the findings in the light of the evidence presented in the report. The results are corroborated with sufficient evidence showing that all aspects of the problem have been adequately explored. The newer insights gained and the conflicting propositions that have emerged are suitably highlighted in the report.

Qualitative Research: Data Collection, Analysis, and Management

Introduction.

In an earlier paper, 1 we presented an introduction to using qualitative research methods in pharmacy practice. In this article, we review some principles of the collection, analysis, and management of qualitative data to help pharmacists interested in doing research in their practice to continue their learning in this area. Qualitative research can help researchers to access the thoughts and feelings of research participants, which can enable development of an understanding of the meaning that people ascribe to their experiences. Whereas quantitative research methods can be used to determine how many people undertake particular behaviours, qualitative methods can help researchers to understand how and why such behaviours take place. Within the context of pharmacy practice research, qualitative approaches have been used to examine a diverse array of topics, including the perceptions of key stakeholders regarding prescribing by pharmacists and the postgraduation employment experiences of young pharmacists (see “Further Reading” section at the end of this article).

In the previous paper, 1 we outlined 3 commonly used methodologies: ethnography 2 , grounded theory 3 , and phenomenology. 4 Briefly, ethnography involves researchers using direct observation to study participants in their “real life” environment, sometimes over extended periods. Grounded theory and its later modified versions (e.g., Strauss and Corbin 5 ) use face-to-face interviews and interactions such as focus groups to explore a particular research phenomenon and may help in clarifying a less-well-understood problem, situation, or context. Phenomenology shares some features with grounded theory (such as an exploration of participants’ behaviour) and uses similar techniques to collect data, but it focuses on understanding how human beings experience their world. It gives researchers the opportunity to put themselves in another person’s shoes and to understand the subjective experiences of participants. 6 Some researchers use qualitative methodologies but adopt a different standpoint, and an example of this appears in the work of Thurston and others, 7 discussed later in this paper.

Qualitative work requires reflection on the part of researchers, both before and during the research process, as a way of providing context and understanding for readers. When being reflexive, researchers should not try to simply ignore or avoid their own biases (as this would likely be impossible); instead, reflexivity requires researchers to reflect upon and clearly articulate their position and subjectivities (world view, perspectives, biases), so that readers can better understand the filters through which questions were asked, data were gathered and analyzed, and findings were reported. From this perspective, bias and subjectivity are not inherently negative but they are unavoidable; as a result, it is best that they be articulated up-front in a manner that is clear and coherent for readers.

THE PARTICIPANT’S VIEWPOINT

What qualitative study seeks to convey is why people have thoughts and feelings that might affect the way they behave. Such study may occur in any number of contexts, but here, we focus on pharmacy practice and the way people behave with regard to medicines use (e.g., to understand patients’ reasons for nonadherence with medication therapy or to explore physicians’ resistance to pharmacists’ clinical suggestions). As we suggested in our earlier article, 1 an important point about qualitative research is that there is no attempt to generalize the findings to a wider population. Qualitative research is used to gain insights into people’s feelings and thoughts, which may provide the basis for a future stand-alone qualitative study or may help researchers to map out survey instruments for use in a quantitative study. It is also possible to use different types of research in the same study, an approach known as “mixed methods” research, and further reading on this topic may be found at the end of this paper.

The role of the researcher in qualitative research is to attempt to access the thoughts and feelings of study participants. This is not an easy task, as it involves asking people to talk about things that may be very personal to them. Sometimes the experiences being explored are fresh in the participant’s mind, whereas on other occasions reliving past experiences may be difficult. However the data are being collected, a primary responsibility of the researcher is to safeguard participants and their data. Mechanisms for such safeguarding must be clearly articulated to participants and must be approved by a relevant research ethics review board before the research begins. Researchers and practitioners new to qualitative research should seek advice from an experienced qualitative researcher before embarking on their project.

DATA COLLECTION

Whatever philosophical standpoint the researcher is taking and whatever the data collection method (e.g., focus group, one-to-one interviews), the process will involve the generation of large amounts of data. In addition to the variety of study methodologies available, there are also different ways of making a record of what is said and done during an interview or focus group, such as taking handwritten notes or video-recording. If the researcher is audio- or video-recording data collection, then the recordings must be transcribed verbatim before data analysis can begin. As a rough guide, it can take an experienced researcher/transcriber 8 hours to transcribe one 45-minute audio-recorded interview, a process than will generate 20–30 pages of written dialogue.

Many researchers will also maintain a folder of “field notes” to complement audio-taped interviews. Field notes allow the researcher to maintain and comment upon impressions, environmental contexts, behaviours, and nonverbal cues that may not be adequately captured through the audio-recording; they are typically handwritten in a small notebook at the same time the interview takes place. Field notes can provide important context to the interpretation of audio-taped data and can help remind the researcher of situational factors that may be important during data analysis. Such notes need not be formal, but they should be maintained and secured in a similar manner to audio tapes and transcripts, as they contain sensitive information and are relevant to the research. DATA ANALYSIS AND MANAGEMENT

If, as suggested earlier, doing qualitative research is about putting oneself in another person’s shoes and seeing the world from that person’s perspective, the most important part of data analysis and management is to be true to the participants. It is their voices that the researcher is trying to hear, so that they can be interpreted and reported on for others to read and learn from. To illustrate this point, consider the anonymized transcript excerpt presented in Appendix 1 , which is taken from a research interview conducted by one of the authors (J.S.). We refer to this excerpt throughout the remainder of this paper to illustrate how data can be managed, analyzed, and presented.

Interpretation of Data

Interpretation of the data will depend on the theoretical standpoint taken by researchers. For example, the title of the research report by Thurston and others, 7 “Discordant indigenous and provider frames explain challenges in improving access to arthritis care: a qualitative study using constructivist grounded theory,” indicates at least 2 theoretical standpoints. The first is the culture of the indigenous population of Canada and the place of this population in society, and the second is the social constructivist theory used in the constructivist grounded theory method. With regard to the first standpoint, it can be surmised that, to have decided to conduct the research, the researchers must have felt that there was anecdotal evidence of differences in access to arthritis care for patients from indigenous and non-indigenous backgrounds. With regard to the second standpoint, it can be surmised that the researchers used social constructivist theory because it assumes that behaviour is socially constructed; in other words, people do things because of the expectations of those in their personal world or in the wider society in which they live. (Please see the “Further Reading” section for resources providing more information about social constructivist theory and reflexivity.) Thus, these 2 standpoints (and there may have been others relevant to the research of Thurston and others 7 ) will have affected the way in which these researchers interpreted the experiences of the indigenous population participants and those providing their care. Another standpoint is feminist standpoint theory which, among other things, focuses on marginalized groups in society. Such theories are helpful to researchers, as they enable us to think about things from a different perspective. Being aware of the standpoints you are taking in your own research is one of the foundations of qualitative work. Without such awareness, it is easy to slip into interpreting other people’s narratives from your own viewpoint, rather than that of the participants.

To analyze the example in Appendix 1 , we will adopt a phenomenological approach because we want to understand how the participant experienced the illness and we want to try to see the experience from that person’s perspective. It is important for the researcher to reflect upon and articulate his or her starting point for such analysis; for example, in the example, the coder could reflect upon her own experience as a female of a majority ethnocultural group who has lived within middle class and upper middle class settings. This personal history therefore forms the filter through which the data will be examined. This filter does not diminish the quality or significance of the analysis, since every researcher has his or her own filters; however, by explicitly stating and acknowledging what these filters are, the researcher makes it easer for readers to contextualize the work.

Transcribing and Checking

For the purposes of this paper it is assumed that interviews or focus groups have been audio-recorded. As mentioned above, transcribing is an arduous process, even for the most experienced transcribers, but it must be done to convert the spoken word to the written word to facilitate analysis. For anyone new to conducting qualitative research, it is beneficial to transcribe at least one interview and one focus group. It is only by doing this that researchers realize how difficult the task is, and this realization affects their expectations when asking others to transcribe. If the research project has sufficient funding, then a professional transcriber can be hired to do the work. If this is the case, then it is a good idea to sit down with the transcriber, if possible, and talk through the research and what the participants were talking about. This background knowledge for the transcriber is especially important in research in which people are using jargon or medical terms (as in pharmacy practice). Involving your transcriber in this way makes the work both easier and more rewarding, as he or she will feel part of the team. Transcription editing software is also available, but it is expensive. For example, ELAN (more formally known as EUDICO Linguistic Annotator, developed at the Technical University of Berlin) 8 is a tool that can help keep data organized by linking media and data files (particularly valuable if, for example, video-taping of interviews is complemented by transcriptions). It can also be helpful in searching complex data sets. Products such as ELAN do not actually automatically transcribe interviews or complete analyses, and they do require some time and effort to learn; nonetheless, for some research applications, it may be a valuable to consider such software tools.

All audio recordings should be transcribed verbatim, regardless of how intelligible the transcript may be when it is read back. Lines of text should be numbered. Once the transcription is complete, the researcher should read it while listening to the recording and do the following: correct any spelling or other errors; anonymize the transcript so that the participant cannot be identified from anything that is said (e.g., names, places, significant events); insert notations for pauses, laughter, looks of discomfort; insert any punctuation, such as commas and full stops (periods) (see Appendix 1 for examples of inserted punctuation), and include any other contextual information that might have affected the participant (e.g., temperature or comfort of the room).

Dealing with the transcription of a focus group is slightly more difficult, as multiple voices are involved. One way of transcribing such data is to “tag” each voice (e.g., Voice A, Voice B). In addition, the focus group will usually have 2 facilitators, whose respective roles will help in making sense of the data. While one facilitator guides participants through the topic, the other can make notes about context and group dynamics. More information about group dynamics and focus groups can be found in resources listed in the “Further Reading” section.

Reading between the Lines

During the process outlined above, the researcher can begin to get a feel for the participant’s experience of the phenomenon in question and can start to think about things that could be pursued in subsequent interviews or focus groups (if appropriate). In this way, one participant’s narrative informs the next, and the researcher can continue to interview until nothing new is being heard or, as it says in the text books, “saturation is reached”. While continuing with the processes of coding and theming (described in the next 2 sections), it is important to consider not just what the person is saying but also what they are not saying. For example, is a lengthy pause an indication that the participant is finding the subject difficult, or is the person simply deciding what to say? The aim of the whole process from data collection to presentation is to tell the participants’ stories using exemplars from their own narratives, thus grounding the research findings in the participants’ lived experiences.

Smith 9 suggested a qualitative research method known as interpretative phenomenological analysis, which has 2 basic tenets: first, that it is rooted in phenomenology, attempting to understand the meaning that individuals ascribe to their lived experiences, and second, that the researcher must attempt to interpret this meaning in the context of the research. That the researcher has some knowledge and expertise in the subject of the research means that he or she can have considerable scope in interpreting the participant’s experiences. Larkin and others 10 discussed the importance of not just providing a description of what participants say. Rather, interpretative phenomenological analysis is about getting underneath what a person is saying to try to truly understand the world from his or her perspective.

Once all of the research interviews have been transcribed and checked, it is time to begin coding. Field notes compiled during an interview can be a useful complementary source of information to facilitate this process, as the gap in time between an interview, transcribing, and coding can result in memory bias regarding nonverbal or environmental context issues that may affect interpretation of data.

Coding refers to the identification of topics, issues, similarities, and differences that are revealed through the participants’ narratives and interpreted by the researcher. This process enables the researcher to begin to understand the world from each participant’s perspective. Coding can be done by hand on a hard copy of the transcript, by making notes in the margin or by highlighting and naming sections of text. More commonly, researchers use qualitative research software (e.g., NVivo, QSR International Pty Ltd; www.qsrinternational.com/products_nvivo.aspx ) to help manage their transcriptions. It is advised that researchers undertake a formal course in the use of such software or seek supervision from a researcher experienced in these tools.

Returning to Appendix 1 and reading from lines 8–11, a code for this section might be “diagnosis of mental health condition”, but this would just be a description of what the participant is talking about at that point. If we read a little more deeply, we can ask ourselves how the participant might have come to feel that the doctor assumed he or she was aware of the diagnosis or indeed that they had only just been told the diagnosis. There are a number of pauses in the narrative that might suggest the participant is finding it difficult to recall that experience. Later in the text, the participant says “nobody asked me any questions about my life” (line 19). This could be coded simply as “health care professionals’ consultation skills”, but that would not reflect how the participant must have felt never to be asked anything about his or her personal life, about the participant as a human being. At the end of this excerpt, the participant just trails off, recalling that no-one showed any interest, which makes for very moving reading. For practitioners in pharmacy, it might also be pertinent to explore the participant’s experience of akathisia and why this was left untreated for 20 years.

One of the questions that arises about qualitative research relates to the reliability of the interpretation and representation of the participants’ narratives. There are no statistical tests that can be used to check reliability and validity as there are in quantitative research. However, work by Lincoln and Guba 11 suggests that there are other ways to “establish confidence in the ‘truth’ of the findings” (p. 218). They call this confidence “trustworthiness” and suggest that there are 4 criteria of trustworthiness: credibility (confidence in the “truth” of the findings), transferability (showing that the findings have applicability in other contexts), dependability (showing that the findings are consistent and could be repeated), and confirmability (the extent to which the findings of a study are shaped by the respondents and not researcher bias, motivation, or interest).

One way of establishing the “credibility” of the coding is to ask another researcher to code the same transcript and then to discuss any similarities and differences in the 2 resulting sets of codes. This simple act can result in revisions to the codes and can help to clarify and confirm the research findings.

Theming refers to the drawing together of codes from one or more transcripts to present the findings of qualitative research in a coherent and meaningful way. For example, there may be examples across participants’ narratives of the way in which they were treated in hospital, such as “not being listened to” or “lack of interest in personal experiences” (see Appendix 1 ). These may be drawn together as a theme running through the narratives that could be named “the patient’s experience of hospital care”. The importance of going through this process is that at its conclusion, it will be possible to present the data from the interviews using quotations from the individual transcripts to illustrate the source of the researchers’ interpretations. Thus, when the findings are organized for presentation, each theme can become the heading of a section in the report or presentation. Underneath each theme will be the codes, examples from the transcripts, and the researcher’s own interpretation of what the themes mean. Implications for real life (e.g., the treatment of people with chronic mental health problems) should also be given.

DATA SYNTHESIS

In this final section of this paper, we describe some ways of drawing together or “synthesizing” research findings to represent, as faithfully as possible, the meaning that participants ascribe to their life experiences. This synthesis is the aim of the final stage of qualitative research. For most readers, the synthesis of data presented by the researcher is of crucial significance—this is usually where “the story” of the participants can be distilled, summarized, and told in a manner that is both respectful to those participants and meaningful to readers. There are a number of ways in which researchers can synthesize and present their findings, but any conclusions drawn by the researchers must be supported by direct quotations from the participants. In this way, it is made clear to the reader that the themes under discussion have emerged from the participants’ interviews and not the mind of the researcher. The work of Latif and others 12 gives an example of how qualitative research findings might be presented.

Planning and Writing the Report

As has been suggested above, if researchers code and theme their material appropriately, they will naturally find the headings for sections of their report. Qualitative researchers tend to report “findings” rather than “results”, as the latter term typically implies that the data have come from a quantitative source. The final presentation of the research will usually be in the form of a report or a paper and so should follow accepted academic guidelines. In particular, the article should begin with an introduction, including a literature review and rationale for the research. There should be a section on the chosen methodology and a brief discussion about why qualitative methodology was most appropriate for the study question and why one particular methodology (e.g., interpretative phenomenological analysis rather than grounded theory) was selected to guide the research. The method itself should then be described, including ethics approval, choice of participants, mode of recruitment, and method of data collection (e.g., semistructured interviews or focus groups), followed by the research findings, which will be the main body of the report or paper. The findings should be written as if a story is being told; as such, it is not necessary to have a lengthy discussion section at the end. This is because much of the discussion will take place around the participants’ quotes, such that all that is needed to close the report or paper is a summary, limitations of the research, and the implications that the research has for practice. As stated earlier, it is not the intention of qualitative research to allow the findings to be generalized, and therefore this is not, in itself, a limitation.

Planning out the way that findings are to be presented is helpful. It is useful to insert the headings of the sections (the themes) and then make a note of the codes that exemplify the thoughts and feelings of your participants. It is generally advisable to put in the quotations that you want to use for each theme, using each quotation only once. After all this is done, the telling of the story can begin as you give your voice to the experiences of the participants, writing around their quotations. Do not be afraid to draw assumptions from the participants’ narratives, as this is necessary to give an in-depth account of the phenomena in question. Discuss these assumptions, drawing on your participants’ words to support you as you move from one code to another and from one theme to the next. Finally, as appropriate, it is possible to include examples from literature or policy documents that add support for your findings. As an exercise, you may wish to code and theme the sample excerpt in Appendix 1 and tell the participant’s story in your own way. CONCLUSIONS

Qualitative research can help researchers to access the thoughts and feelings of research participants, which can enable development of an understanding of the meaning that people ascribe to their experiences. It can be used in pharmacy practice research to explore how patients feel about their health and their treatment. Qualitative research has been used by pharmacists to explore a variety of questions and problems (see the “Further Reading” section for examples). An understanding of these issues can help pharmacists and other health care professionals to tailor health care to match the individual needs of patients and to develop a concordant relationship. Doing qualitative research is not easy and may require a complete rethink of how research is conducted, particularly for researchers who are more familiar with quantitative approaches. There are many ways of conducting qualitative research, and this paper has covered some of the practical issues regarding data collection, analysis, and management. Further reading around the subject will be essential to truly understand this method of accessing peoples’ thoughts and feelings to enable researchers to tell participants’ stories.

Appendix 1. Excerpt from a sample transcript

The participant (age late 50s) had suffered from a chronic mental health illness for 30 years. The participant had become a “revolving door patient,” someone who is frequently in and out of hospital. As the participant talked about past experiences, the researcher asked:

  • What was treatment like 30 years ago?
  • Umm—well it was pretty much they could do what they wanted with you because I was put into the er, the er kind of system er, I was just on
  • endless section threes.
  • Really…
  • But what I didn’t realize until later was that if you haven’t actually posed a threat to someone or yourself they can’t really do that but I didn’t know
  • that. So wh-when I first went into hospital they put me on the forensic ward ’cause they said, “We don’t think you’ll stay here we think you’ll just
  • run-run away.” So they put me then onto the acute admissions ward and – er – I can remember one of the first things I recall when I got onto that
  • ward was sitting down with a er a Dr XXX. He had a book this thick [gestures] and on each page it was like three questions and he went through
  • all these questions and I answered all these questions. So we’re there for I don’t maybe two hours doing all that and he asked me he said “well
  • when did somebody tell you then that you have schizophrenia” I said “well nobody’s told me that” so he seemed very surprised but nobody had
  • actually [pause] whe-when I first went up there under police escort erm the senior kind of consultants people I’d been to where I was staying and
  • ermm so er [pause] I . . . the, I can remember the very first night that I was there and given this injection in this muscle here [gestures] and just
  • having dreadful side effects the next day I woke up [pause]
  • . . . and I suffered that akathesia I swear to you, every minute of every day for about 20 years.

The School of Education approves five approaches or designs within qualitative methodology: basic qualitative, case study, ethnography, grounded theory, and phenomenology.  Each of these designs uses its own kind of data sources.  Table 1 outlines the main primary and secondary sources of data in each design. 

  • Primary sources are data from actual participants.
  • Secondary data sources are from others.
  • The researcher’s notes describing observations of participants or behaviors in their natural environments.  This is the more common usage, and is most common in ethnographic studies.
  • The researcher’s notes to self about themes noticed while collecting data, possibly important points in the data, ideas to come back to, and so on.
  • Another related term is memos , although memos in grounded theory tend to be brief or extended essays charting the development of theory, rather than simple notes.  Strictly speaking, these notes or memos are not data in themselves, but point to data in another source.

Data Collection in Ethnography

Typically, ethnographers collect data while in the field. Their data collection methods can include

  • Participant observation.
  • Naturalistic observation.
  • Writing field notes.
  • Conducting semi-structured or structured interviews (sometimes audiotaped or videotaped).
  • Reviewing documents, records, photographs, videotapes, maps, and sociograms.
  • Any accessible and dependable source of information about the behaviors, interactions, customs, values, beliefs, attitudes, and practices of the members of that culture can be a source of data.

It is worth remembering that the time-world of cultural groups is longer than it is for individual persons, and so:

  • Data collection may need to cover a longer time in order to capture the true flavor of the culture.
  • Field research methods need to adapt to the demands of the field; ethnography allows for flexibility in the design of its methods to accommodate the challenges of the field.

However, for both of these reasons—the longer time-world of the culture or group and the occasional need to change data collection methods to meet challenges in the field—Institutional Review Board (IRB) complications can be introduced and must be addressed, further lengthening the time of the ethnographic study.

Data Collection in Case Studies

Case studies always include multiple sources of information because the case includes multiple kinds of issues. For example, a case study of a training program would obtain and analyze information about:

  • The participants.
  • The nature of the organizational issues calling for the training.
  • The kinds of training provided.
  • The outcomes of the program.
  • The background and training of the staff, and so on.

In addition to multiple information sources, every case study provides an in-depth description of the contexts of the case:

  • Its setting (for example, the kind of organizational structure and environment in which the training takes place).
  • Its contexts (social contexts, political contexts, affiliations affecting outcomes, and so on).

The setting and context are an intrinsic part of the case.

Consequently, because cases contain many kinds of information and contexts, case studies use many different methods of data collection. These can include the full range of qualitative methods such as:

  • Open-ended surveys.
  • Interviews.
  • Field observations. Reviews of documents, records, and other materials.
  • Evaluation of audiovisual materials.
  • Descriptions of contexts and collateral materials; and so on.

A well-designed case study does not rely on a single method and source of data because any true case (bounded system) will have many characteristics and it is not known ahead of time which characteristics are important. Determining that is the work of the case study.

Data Collection in Grounded Theory

The dominant methods of data collection in grounded theory research are:

  • Interviews (usually audiotaped).
  • Participant and nonparticipant observations.
  • Conversations.
  • Recorded diaries.
  • Field notes.
  • Descriptions of comparative instances.
  • Personal narratives of experiences.

The participants in a grounded theory study often will be interviewed more than once and asked to reflect on and refine the preliminary conclusions drawn by the researcher. Grounded theory designs use the constant comparative data analysis technique that requires simultaneously interviewing, analyzing, and constantly comparing the data.  As a result of the constant comparison of interview data, the participants in a grounded theory study often will be interviewed more than once and asked to reflect on and refine the preliminary conclusions drawn by the researcher.

Grounded theorists will develop substantive theories through:

  • Employing a theoretical sampling process that might lead to interviewing new rounds of participants until theoretical saturation is reached.
  • Reinterviewing participants about them, asking for their feedback.

Data Collection in Phenomenology

There are two descriptive levels of the empirical phenomenological model that arise from the data collected:

  • Level 1: The original data are comprised of naïve descriptions obtained from participants through open-ended questions and dialogue. Naïve means simply, “in their own words, without reflection.”
  • Level 2: The researcher describes the structures of the experiences based on reflective analysis and interpretation of the research participant’s account or story.

To collect data for these levels of analysis, the primary tool is the in-depth personal interview.

  • Interviews typically are open (meaning, no forced answers), with three main kinds of questions:
  • An opening or initial question .  Usually this is only pre-written question, designed carefully to inquire into the participant’s lived (everyday) experience of the phenomenon under investigation.
  • Follow-up questions are asked to tease out deeper or more detailed elaborations of the earlier answers or to clarify unclear statements or ask about non-verbal gestures.
  • Guiding questions are asked to help the respondents return to the topic of the interview when they stray or digress.
  • The goal of the opening question (and all other questions) is to allow the respondent the maximum freedom to respond from within his or her lived (everyday, non-reflective) experience.

Because the objective is to collect data that are profoundly descriptive (rich in detail) and introspective, these interviews often can be lengthy, sometimes lasting as long as an hour or more.

Sometimes other sources of data are used in phenomenological studies, when those sources are equivalent in some way to the in-depth interview. For example:

  • In a study of the lived experience of teacher creativity, poems or other writings by the participants (or other people) about creative experiences might be collected in the same way as the in-depth interviews.
  • Audiovisual materials having a direct bearing on the lived experience of creativity might be included as data (for example, art work or other illustrations of creativity).

Although other less personal data sources (such as letters, official documents, and news accounts) are seldom used as direct information about the lived experience, the researcher may find in a particular case that these are useful either in illuminating the participant’s story itself or in creating a rich and textured background description of the contexts and settings in which the participant experienced the phenomenon.

Data Collection in Basic Qualitative Inquiry

Data collection in this approach typically uses data collection methods that elicit people’s verbal descriptions and interpretations of their experiences and the meaning they ascribe to those experiences.  Basic qualitative research can also focus on understanding a process; for example, a study that examines innovative teaching strategies and practices used by general education teachers in large inclusive classrooms. Basic qualitative researchers will use semi-structure interviews as their main data collection tool.  When appropriate, observations and artifacts might be includes.

Merriam (2009) describes a basic interpretive qualitative research study as having philosophically been derived from constructionism, phenomenology, and symbolic interaction and is used by researchers who are "interested in “(1) how people interpret their experiences, (2) how they construct their worlds, and (3) what meaning they attribute to their experiences. The overall purpose is to understand how people make sense of their lives and their experiences" (p. 23).

Case study research is a type of qualitative research design. It’s often used in the social sciences because it involves observing subjects, or cases, in their natural setting, with minimal interference from the researcher.

In the case study method , researchers pose a specific question about an individual or group to test their theories or hypothesis. This can be done by gathering data from interviews with key informants.

What Is The Case Study Method?

Case study research is a great way to understand the nuances of a matter that can get lost in quantitative research methods. A case study is distinct from other qualitative studies in the following ways:

  • It’s interested in the effect of a set of circumstances on an individual or group.
  • It begins with a specific question about one or more cases.
  • It focuses on individual accounts and experiences.

Here are the primary features of case study research:

  • Case study research methods typically involve the researcher asking a few questions of one person or a small number of people—known as respondents—to test one hypothesis.
  • Case study in research methodology may apply triangulation to collect data, in which the researcher uses several sources, including documents and field data. This is then analyzed and interpreted to form a hypothesis that can be tested through further research or validated by other researchers.
  • The case study method requires clear concepts and theories to guide its methods. A well-defined research question is crucial when conducting a case study because the results of the study depend on it. The best approach to answering a research question is to challenge the existing theories, hypotheses or assumptions.
  • Concepts are defined using objective language with no reference to preconceived notions that individuals might have about them. The researcher sets out to discover by asking specific questions on how people think or perceive things in their given situation.

They commonly use the case study method in business, management, psychology, sociology, political science and other related fields.

A fundamental requirement of qualitative research is recording observations that provide an understanding of reality. When it comes to the case study method, there are two major approaches that can be used to collect data: document review and fieldwork.

A case study in research methodology also includes literature review, the process by which the researcher collects all data available through historical documents. These might include books, newspapers, journals, videos, photographs and other written material. The researcher may also record information using video cameras to capture events as they occur. The researcher can also go through materials produced by people involved in the case study to gain an insight into their lives and experiences.

Field research involves participating in interviews and observations directly. Observation can be done during telephone interviews, events or public meetings, visits to homes or workplaces, or by shadowing someone for a period of time. The researcher can conduct one-on-one interviews with individuals or group interviews where several people are interviewed at once.

Let’s look now at case study methodology.

The case study method can be divided into three stages: formulation of objectives; collection of data; and analysis and interpretation. The researcher first makes a judgment about what should be studied based on their knowledge. Next, they gather data through observations and interviews. Here are some of the common case study research methods:

One of the most basic methods is the survey. Respondents are asked to complete a questionnaire with open-ended and predetermined questions. It usually takes place through face-to-face interviews, mailed questionnaires or telephone interviews. It can even be done by an online survey.

2. Semi-structured Interview

For case study research a more complex method is the semi-structured interview. This involves the researcher learning about the topic by listening to what others have to say. This usually occurs through one-on-one interviews with the sample. Semi-structured interviews allow for greater flexibility and can obtain information that structured questionnaires can’t.

3. Focus Group Interview

Another method is the focus group interview, where the researcher asks a few people to take part in an open-ended discussion on certain themes or topics. The typical group size is 5–15 people. This method allows researchers to delve deeper into people’s opinions, views and experiences.

4. Participant Observation

Participant observation is another method that involves the researcher gaining insight into an experience by joining in and taking part in normal events. The people involved don’t always know they’re being studied, but the researcher observes and records what happens through field notes.

Case study research design can use one or several of these methods depending on the context.

Case studies are widely used in the social sciences. To understand the impact of socio-economic forces, interpersonal dynamics and other human conditions, sometimes there’s no other way than to study one case at a time and look for patterns and data afterward.

It’s for the same reasons that case studies are used in business. Here are a few uses:

  • Case studies can be used as tools to educate and give examples of situations and problems that might occur and how they were resolved. They can also be used for strategy development and implementation.
  • Case studies can evaluate the success of a program or project. They can help teams improve their collaboration by identifying areas that need improvements, such as team dynamics, communication, roles and responsibilities and leadership styles.
  • Case studies can explore how people’s experiences affect the working environment. Because the study involves observing and analyzing concrete details of life, they can inform theories on how an individual or group interacts with their environment.
  • Case studies can evaluate the sustainability of businesses. They’re useful for social, environmental and economic impact studies because they look at all aspects of a business or organization. This gives researchers a holistic view of the dynamics within an organization.
  • We can use case studies to identify problems in organizations or businesses. They can help spot problems that are invisible to customers, investors, managers and employees.
  • Case studies are used in education to show students how real-world issues or events can be sorted out. This enables students to identify and deal with similar situations in their lives.

And that’s not all. Case studies are incredibly versatile, which is why they’re used so widely.

Human beings are complex and they interact with each other in their everyday life in various ways. The researcher observes a case and tries to find out how the patterns of behavior are created, including their causal relations. Case studies help understand one or more specific events that have been observed. Here are some common methods:

1. Illustrative case study

This is where the researcher observes a group of people doing something. Studying an event or phenomenon this way can show cause-and-effect relationships between various variables.

2. Cumulative case study

A cumulative case study is one that involves observing the same set of phenomena over a period. Cumulative case studies can be very helpful in understanding processes, which are things that happen over time. For example, if there are behavioral changes in people who move from one place to another, the researcher might want to know why these changes occurred.

3. Exploratory case study

An exploratory case study collects information that will answer a question. It can help researchers better understand social, economic, political or other social phenomena.

There are several other ways to categorize case studies. They may be chronological case studies, where a researcher observes events over time. In the comparative case study, the researcher compares one or more groups of people, places, or things to draw conclusions about them. In an intervention case study, the researcher intervenes to change the behavior of the subjects. The study method depends on the needs of the research team.

Positioning and Authenticity in Data Collection: Researching Racism in Education Contexts

This case study examines the challenges of researching one of the most sensitive topics in education contexts: racism. Based on a research project that critically examined the culture in a U.K. university, data were collected using participant observation and in-depth interviews with participants from an underrepresented group. The data were then analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. In this case study, we show how approaching a case study from both an emic and etic perspective by flexibly positioning oneself as both an insider and an outsider can play a significant role in gaining access to the studied group and producing rich, authentic data. We show how, if treated rigorously and responsibly, research can successfully undertake a range of critical tasks: providing a platform for marginalized participants in a complex social context, establishing a voice that both amplifies these marginalized perspectives and communicates challenging messages to a wider audience, and challenging and renewing critical concepts that can both illuminate complex, qualitative findings and provide conceptual tools for further research.

Project Overview and Context

The United Kingdom has a long history of attracting international students to its universities. However, in recent years, there have been concerns about the ability of U.K. universities to provide a positive experience and an inclusive, welcoming environment for these students. These concerns stem from several factors. One major issue is the increasing commercialization of higher education, which has led some universities to prioritize income from international student fees over the quality of their educational and support services. Another issue is the lack of cultural competency and sensitivity among university staff and faculty ( Kemiche & Beighton, 2021 ). While many U.K. universities pride themselves on their diverse student body, some staff members may not have the training and/or understanding to effectively support students from different cultural backgrounds. This can lead to misunderstandings, miscommunications, and a lack of understanding of the challenges that international students may face. Additionally, there have been reports of discrimination and harassment against international students, and instances of verbal and physical abuse directed at international students have been reported, including racist and xenophobic language, derogatory comments about their cultures and backgrounds, and even physical assault ( EHRC, 2019 ; Love & Mohammed, 2020 ). These traumatic incidents have left many international students feeling unwelcome and unsupported in their new environment.

The focus of this research project was to understand the racism reported in U.K. higher education institutions following the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) report that revealed that more than two thirds of students and staff (69% and 66%, respectively) experienced racism on U.K. campuses ( EHRC, 2019 , p. 21). Researchers continue to report examples of racist abuse, slights, and insults in higher education institutions ( Beighton, 2020 ; Bhopal & Myers, 2023 ), and this case study’s data suggest that U.K. higher education institutions do not just lack a clear understanding of racial harassment but even often prioritize reputation over safeguarding and welfare.

This research used a higher education institution situated in southern England as a case study for this project. Green Field University is a relatively large U.K. higher education institution with more than 26,000 international students enrolled in a range of academic courses and PhD preparatory programs offered by the university to enable international students to subsequently pursue doctoral research in their chosen university and secure employment in their desired vocation. As with any other U.K. university, these students are here to earn an undergraduate or postgraduate degree and develop intercultural competencies and global mindsets. This case study is based on a small-scale qualitative study that explores the connections between personal experiences and larger trends in the internationalization of universities. The research used a combination of participant observation and in-depth interviews to collect empirical data and gain a comprehensive understanding of students’ experiences with racism. Participant observation provided us with an understanding of their lives and behaviors in their natural settings, whereas the interviews allowed us to explore their perspectives in more detail.

For the data analysis, we chose to use interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) as our primary qualitative approach. IPA allowed us to explore and interpret individuals’ experiences through their own words and subjective accounts. This research methodology enabled us to approach the case study from both insider and outsider perspectives, resulting in rich and authentic data that helped us identify patterns and themes that may have been overlooked by those who had undergone the experience ( Noon, 2018 ). The research methods used in this project are widely recognized and often employed for topics requiring in-depth qualitative analysis. They are especially useful, as we show later, when investigating sensitive questions in contexts where findings may be challenging. Moreover, what sets this case study apart is the dual roles we played as both insiders and outsiders, which allowed for a more iterative process, leading to a comprehensive and nuanced analysis of the issue under investigation.

Research Design

To investigate the concept of internationalization in higher education from the perspective of students, we conducted qualitative phenomenological research using semistructured interviews with students from different backgrounds across different levels and from different institutions (minimum of three) so that we could compare the data. We wanted to collect data that would illustrate a U.K. organization as holistically as possible, but we didn’t know which group of students was best suited for the focus of the study and what aspects of their experiences to focus on to develop a nuanced understanding of this phenomenon and whether IPA was suitable to develop a critical analysis of the concept of internationalization. Therefore, to find answers to these questions, test the feasibility of the study, and assess the adequacy of the research approach, we conducted a pilot study on both internal and external subjects.

Internally, starting from an institution that was accessible to both of us, we conducted semistructured interviews with students from different levels (e.g., foundation year, undergraduate, and postgraduate). This part of the process led to three important observations: First, based on the interview samples and the level of students’ engagement with the topic, we were able to identify that the postgraduate students enrolled in PhD programs were best suited to the focus of the study because they have international experience and develop a more critical awareness of the phenomenon under study than other students. Second, contrary to what we had expected, the number of British students who participated in the pilot study was very low in comparison with international students. The reason for this turned out to be that they did not see themselves as concerned with our subject area (i.e., the concept of internationalization), an attitude that was strong enough for us to shift our focus solely onto international students. However, there was one important aspect that piqued our interest and backed our decision to still involve British students in the sample: a group of British Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) students had reported being perceived, despite being born in the United Kingdom, as outsiders. Third, in the process of interviewing the students, we realized that the students’ narratives and experiences were directly connected with members of staff they interact with daily, and therefore, interviewing just students would reveal only one part of the whole story. Thus, to develop a more nuanced understanding of the phenomenon, we decided to interview staff members as well. This allowed us to gain insight into their perspectives and roles in the wider education system.

Externally, interviews were planned with staff and postgraduate students from two other universities to enable comparisons among the three institutions. However, after initial interviews, we noticed that the participants were often hesitant when discussing sensitive topics related to racism and institutional service provision. Essentially, the participants seemed more interested in promoting a positive image of their institutions’ brand than critically discussing relevant matters. They tended to present a superficial and idealistic image of their university as exempt from critical evaluation or analysis. In hindsight, this was perhaps inevitable because the participants saw us as outsider researchers: we were viewed with understandable suspicion, which made it difficult for us to build rapport, gain access to the studied group, and thus obtain reliable data from participants outside our academic circle. Instead, the study was viewed as a marketing opportunity (i.e., advertisement) to promote their institution’s brand image to potential competitors.

Because of the lack of trust and questionable reliability of the data gathered from these institutions, we made a fundamental decision to turn the research into a single case study focusing on one institution instead. It became clear that this approach would provide richer and more in-depth and credible data by allowing us to develop a closer relationship with the institution and its students and staff members. Indeed, by focusing on one institution, we were able to gain a deeper understanding of the motivations, experiences, and perspectives of the participants and provide more detailed and nuanced insights into the phenomenon being studied.

Exploring the Suitability of IPA for Investigating Experiences of Racism Among International Students

The pilot study aimed to explore the suitability of IPA as an analytical approach for investigating the experiences of racism among international students and to identify any potential challenges or limitations of using this method in this context. IPA is a qualitative research method that aims to explore how individuals make sense of their experiences. Usually involving semistructured interviews, it elicits data that reflect how individuals and groups construct experiences as social phenomena in and through language. These constructions are analyzed as individual instances of meaning-making with the intention of highlighting the personal impact of experience on individuals who are encouraged to decide for themselves what events and experiences mean, to them, in their own words. This makes IPA potentially useful for investigating the complex and multifaceted experiences of racism among international students whose voices are, for various reasons, often unheard.

Using purposive sampling for the pilot, we recruited three international students who reported experiencing racism during their time studying abroad. Participants were interviewed individually using a semistructured interview guide that focused on their experiences of racism and how they made sense of those experiences. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using a detailed approach to the transcripts: themes and patterns were identified and analyzed by careful iterative rereading and reevaluation of the data. The data were analyzed by focusing on the extent to which they reflected critical issues raised by the literature. We looked for instances of perceived discrimination and the ways in which interviewees articulated critical themes related to the discourse and practices of internationalization. We aimed to avoid referring to specific institutional problems and instead looked for evidence of wider lessons beyond the particular institution where the data were collected.

The analysis identified several themes related to the experiences of racism among international students, including feelings of isolation and marginalization, the impact of racism on academic performance and mental health, and strategies for coping with racism. IPA proved to be very well suited for exploring the complex and nuanced experiences of racial discrimination in higher education because it allowed for a detailed and nuanced exploration of individual experiences and perspectives. However, as the study progressed, given how sensitive the topic was, approaching the data solely from an outsider’s perspective using only interviews was not quite academically fulfilling, so we felt the need to incorporate another research method (i.e., participant observation) to complement the semistructured interviews and gain a different perspective on the students’ experiences and further enhance the credibility and authenticity of the data. Furthermore, the preliminary analysis reminded us of the intricate, demanding, and time-consuming nature of the analysis process. This led us to contemplate suitable time frames for carrying out the analysis of a larger cohort, one decision being to limit the sample size to a maximum of eight participants ( Hefferon & Gil-Rodriguez, 2011 ).

Research Practicalities

The institution used as a case study for this research was where one of the authors obtained their PhD and the other had previous professional experience. While this insider knowledge of the context provided advantages (e.g., making access to the research participants easier), it also posed ethical challenges regarding power dynamics. However, we confidently took a rigorous approach to addressing these issues.

After conducting the pilot study as described earlier, we realized how difficult it was to get the participants’ honest opinions. Building rapport, getting to know the participants more closely, and engaging in their natural settings and activities were essential for us to gain their trust. We felt that attempting to extract ourselves from the research environment could undermine the study’s validity and authenticity, particularly when investigating such complex and sensitive topics. Thus we followed a careful approach to increase the study’s validity and authenticity by

  • 1. Selecting participants thoughtfully and deliberately.
  • 2. Ensuring that ethical considerations were addressed throughout the study.
  • 3. Carefully selecting an appropriate analytical framework to guide our analysis.

Ethical Considerations

To ensure the ethical treatment of participants, we addressed a number of ethical considerations. First, the research project obtained approval from the Research Ethics Committee (REC), which ensured that the research was ethical and met the necessary standards for human subjects’ protection.

Once we had approval, we made sure that all participants were informed of the nature and purpose of the study and gave written voluntary and informed consent to participate. Participants were also assured that their identities would be protected by ensuring anonymity and confidentiality. As researchers, we were also aware of the sensitivity of the topic and the potential harm that could be caused to participants. Therefore, we took steps to minimize harm and provide support and referral services where necessary.

Participant Selection

The participants were selected following a purposive sampling strategy that aimed to access and give voice to a seriously marginalized group of people from underrepresented backgrounds. Specifically, our participants had international experience either as students or as staff and had a thorough understanding and critical awareness of the phenomenon of internationalization. The selection criteria also included individuals with defined opinions about the subject matter, clear inferences, critical evaluations, credible explanations, illustrations, and personal stories. The sample selection process involved several stages, beginning with gaining access to the institution and identifying potential participants who had a clear insight into current internationalization practices and/or experiences, primarily PhD students and staff. We selected a total of eight participants. These participants were then contacted via email with information about the research, including the participant information sheet. They were informed that their identities would remain confidential and that they were required to sign a consent form to participate in a face-to-face interview at a convenient time and place. The sample size of this study was relatively small, but this perfectly aligns with the idiographic nature of IPA, which aims to provide an in-depth analysis of individual cases and experiences.

In this case study, we focused on four student interviewees, whose names and data have all been carefully anonymized. Katia is a full-time first-year PhD student studying media and cultural studies. She is fully funded by her home government, which granted her a 3-year scholarship for a PhD degree in the United Kingdom. Lisa started her journey in the United Kingdom as part of a 6-month presessional program or what is known as PhD preparatory program leading to a PhD in applied linguistics. Jane is a post-PhD student with a 4-year degree in business studies and digital communications from a U.K. university. She currently researches equality, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI) policies, including a focus on migration groups and student attainment gaps. Bima is a second-year PhD student from the faculty of applied linguistics, also sponsored by her home government. Because the issues in question were both sensitive and personal, trust building was fundamental. Our multilingualism proved helpful in this respect, allowing us to respond effectively to the high level of cultural and linguistic diversity of the cohort by, for instance, switching codes and languages in the interviews themselves when this was appropriate. We avoided identifying participants according to predetermined racialized identities to avoid reductive essentialism.

This approach produced a large amount of rich data, which we analyzed initially by focusing on the extent to which they reflected the critical issues mentioned in the interviews. Specifically, we looked for instances of perceived discrimination and the ways in which the interviewees articulated critical themes related to the discourse and practices of internationalization. We were keen to avoid referring to specific institutional problems so that the research would not resemble a “student voice–capturing” exercise. Rather than to concentrate on complaints of an individual of a purely local nature, we looked for evidence of wider lessons beyond the institution where the data were collected.

Method in Action

Insider/outsider research.

The concepts of insider and outsider in qualitative research struggle to accurately reflect many education research contexts. Relying solely on insider perspectives can lead to bias, whereas relying solely on outsider perspectives can overlook hidden nuances and meanings in participants’ lived experiences. Both risk objectifying participants.

To avoid these issues, we approached this case study from both emic (insider) and etic (outsider) perspectives. As insiders, we immersed ourselves in the activities and emotions of a selected group of participants to gather rich and credible descriptive reports of their views, opinions, and experiences. As outsiders, we questioned the individual meanings, concepts, and expressions of the transcripts to uncover hidden nuances and meanings. To balance the two perspectives, we used various techniques, including in-depth descriptive accounts, employing participants’ voices, and working collaboratively with them to discuss and define meaning. However, it is important to acknowledge that researchers cannot completely avoid their own research lens, and multiple interpretations may exist: from the perspective of IPA, this can contribute to the richness of the data. As an approach, it therefore can be strategically advantageous and an essential feature that facilitates the acquisition of rich and authentic data.

Indeed, as researchers, we were able to collect data that may have been inaccessible to others and make meaning of them in a way that other researchers may not have been able to do. This was achieved by drawing on our own experiences, emotions, and, crucially, positioning as both insiders and outsiders. Our personal experiences allowed us to connect with the participants and understand their experiences better. Moreover, our position as both insiders and outsiders allowed us to see the research from multiple perspectives, leading to a more nuanced interpretation of the data. IPA allowed us to gain access to the studied group and observe them in their natural setting, providing insight into their meanings, problems, and viewpoints, and thus producing qualitative data that accurately reflect how the participants live and feel, act and react ( Parrott, 2019 ). In this context, our role was to question everything related to the participants and explore connections to comprehend the nuances of their experiences and the meanings they convey.

Using IPA as a qualitative analytical tool that is inductive in nature, we were able to rethink the concept of internationalization by suggesting an alternative way of looking at it, which was already present in the minds and practices of staff and students. However, many of them were unable to voice their opinions because of an institutional mindset that was still entrenched in binary concepts such as structural racism and the “us versus them” mentality. IPA proved to be a useful methodology for exploring the lived experiences of a marginalized group of individuals who were silenced by discourses of internationalization and images of high-quality provision. However, while IPA was the most appropriate research approach for uncovering the meanings and nuances of the participants’ lived experiences, it also had some methodologic limitations that needed to be considered.

Limitations

In our research project, we encountered three potential limitations that we believe ultimately strengthened our case study. First, we chose to use IPA as our analytical framework. This approach is subjective because it requires the researcher to interpret the participants’ experiences. Consequently, our interpretation of the data may differ from that of others based on their background and prior knowledge. There also was a risk of confirmation bias, whereby our analysis simply reflected our existing expectations and beliefs. As suggested earlier, however, this same subjectivity was crucial to trust building and a sense of authentic engagement with participants’ experiences.

Second, we conducted the interviews in English, which was not the first language of some participants. This could have affected communication and the participants’ ability to express their experiences accurately, as well as our ability to fully understand and communicate the nuances of their experiences. Despite this potential limitation, our multilingual skills allowed us to relate better to the participants’ experiences and comprehend their thoughts and ideas.

Third, our research was based on our personal experiences of being exposed to new cultural backgrounds a few years back. As observers, we shared the same academic life as our participants, attending the same seminars and events, which may suggest a lack of critical distance. However, we saw this shared experience as a strength because it allowed us to build trust and rapport with the participants, resulting in more authentic data.

We believe that we were able to conduct an engaging, critical, and committed study. The subjectivity of IPA allowed for a rigorous ideographic commitment to the participants’ accounts, whereas our contacts at the university helped us gain easy access to information and save time, especially in approaching the participants.

In conclusion, while there were potential limitations to our research, we used them as an opportunity to enhance the authenticity and richness of the data. We were able to draw on our personal experiences, emotions, and multilingual skills to collect data that may have been inaccessible to others and make meaning of them in a way that other researchers may not have been able to do. As such, we believe that positioning ourselves as both insiders and outsiders played a significant role in both the collection and the interpretation of the data.

Practical Lessons Learned

Investigating international student experiences of racism in U.K. higher education involved participant observation and in-depth interviews to collect empirical data. This approach provided a number of important lessons.

One of the most important lessons was that we needed to be flexible and adaptable in the research process. As we saw during the pilot study, researchers may encounter unexpected challenges or barriers that require modifications to their planned research methods or approach. It is important to be open to making changes as needed while still maintaining the integrity and rigor of the research. Another lesson we learned was the importance of establishing trust and rapport with participants. This involves building a relationship of mutual respect and understanding with participants and creating a safe and nonjudgmental space for them to share their experiences. This can be achieved through active listening, empathy, and sensitivity toward their experiences. Our dual role as both insiders and outsiders was significant because we were able to empathize with our participants’ experiences while maintaining enough distance to remain objective. This brings us to the next lesson we learned, which is the importance of ethical considerations in research. When conducting research with sensitive topics such as racism and discrimination, it is crucial to prioritize the well-being and safety of participants and to ensure that their confidentiality and anonymity are protected; otherwise, the participants may be at risk of harm or retaliation, both during and after the research process. This could result in a breach of trust between the researchers and participants and might lead to long-term negative consequences for all parties involved. Therefore, safeguarding the well-being, safety, confidentiality, and anonymity of participants is essential to ensure that the research is conducted in an ethical and responsible manner. Moreover, the project reminded us of the importance of reflexivity and self-awareness in the research process. As researchers, we must be aware of our own biases, values, and assumptions that may influence the research process and findings. This requires constant self-reflection and critical evaluation of our own perspectives and avoidance of letting our own biases influence our interpretations. Furthermore, this project stressed the value of a multilingual and multicultural perspective in conducting research with diverse populations. Our ability to speak multiple languages and understand different cultural contexts allowed us to better understand and communicate with our participants and to gain a deeper understanding of their experiences. Despite conducting the interviews in English, which was not the first language of some participants, our familiarity with their cultural, educational, and linguistic backgrounds helped us to comprehend their thoughts and the ideas they were trying to communicate—and appear credible as interlocutors.

In terms of what went well with this methodology, we found that participant observation allowed us to see participants’ experiences and behaviors in their natural environment, which provided rich and valuable insights. In-depth interviews, in contrast, allowed us to explore participants’ experiences and perspectives in depth, which helped us to understand the complex and nuanced ways in which racism impacted their lives. Looking back on this experience, we would have made some changes to our approach. For example, we would have considered using a translator or interpreter to ensure that we fully understood the participants’ experiences and perspectives. We also would have considered using a more diverse sample to ensure that we captured a range of experiences and perspectives.
