The first step to helping kids write their names is getting them acquainted with it.
When they start noticing the pattern of their names, they gradually get familiar with and associate it with themselves.
I’m gradually starting to show my daughter her name often for her to get familiar with it. 👀
Name Writing with Verbal Instructions
One way to get them to write is through verbal instructions.
Instruct your kids verbally by mentioning the strokes and lines of the letter’s movement needed to form their name.
This method not only helps them improve their auditory senses but also helps them follow and execute the instructions given to them. 🗣️
Name Writing with Fill in the Blanks
My son loves doing activities in the fill-in-the-blank format. ⚫️
Write down the full name on top of the sheet for reference.
Begin by leaving out one letter from the name for them to fill in and then increase the number of missing letters in successive order.
Increase the blanks in each step until you reach a point where they have to write the entire name.
Kids can improve their recognization skills needed to fill in the letters to get their names in order.

You can choose any printed material with a good amount of words.

Print the name of the kids on a sheet of paper and laminate it.

Instead of just putting down their names from pen to paper, you can make your kids practice writing it in the air. 🌬️
Let your kids write their names in the air with the index finger as a pencil. Let them spell out letter by letter while doing so.
This activity helps kids strengthen their hands and motor skills.
Name Writing with Alphabet Beads
Alphabet beads can serve as a medium to learn names and also as a craft activity.
In a bowl, add the alphabet beads. Kids can fish out the letters needed to form their names from the bowl.
You can also turn the name into many beaded bracelets with color threads. 🧮

An engaging activity to make name writing fun.
Spell out the letters of their name on a sheet of paper with different colors of highlighters. Kids can use the highlighted name as an outline and trace over it with a pencil. 🖋️
You could also oppositely do this by writing the name with a pen and making your kids trace over it with highlighters.
Name Writing with Pipe Cleaners
Pipe cleaners are versatile items to shape and twist into shapes.
You can do this engaging activity with your kids to help them improve their motor skills while having fun shaping them.
Use different colors of pipe cleaners and let your kids shape them into letters to form their names.
Name Writing with Stickers
If your kids love playing with stickers and sticking them everywhere, this is the perfect activity to do with them.
Outline the letters of their name with enough space for your stickers.
Let your kids get creative and decorate the outlined names with cute stickers they like.
Name Writing with Sensory Cards
Sensory cards with the names allow your children to have a sensory experience while they touch and feel the texture of their names.
On a thick piece of paper, outline the name of your kids using spacious letters. Glue and fill the letters with sensory materials of your choice – sand, salt, beads, pasta, or rice and make sure it is stuck firmly. 🍚
They can feel the textured letters to remember their names.
Name Writing with Cotton Buds
Cotton buds make for an engaging name-formation activity that you can carry anywhere in a box due to their small size.
Kids can form their names using cotton buds and a reference card to guide them with the formation.
Cotton buds aren’t good for some of the strokes in the lowercase. You can add other materials with the cotton buds for lowercase name writing.
Name Writing with Cotton Buds and Paint
Cotton buds can also be turned into a brush to paint.
Write your kids’ names with a pen on a piece of paper. Make your kids paint over the letters of their names with cotton buds. 🎨
You can also make your kids place dots using the tip of the cotton buds along the outline of the letters.
Name Writing with Cookies
An edible version of the playdough activity – baking cookies!
Involve your kids in baking cookies with letter cookie cutters to form their names. They can cut out their name from the dough and help decorate them when the cookies are out of the oven.
My son and I enjoy making and decorating these name cookies. 🍪
Name Writing with Chalkboard
Let your kids use different colored chalk to write out their names on the chalkboard. 👩🏫

Gel bags, also known as squishy bags, are a type of sensory activity.
Fill a ziplock with a face or shower gel until it is half full. Seal it tightly.
You can tape the opening to make sure it doesn’t leak.
Make your kids practice their names on these sensory bags. 👝
You can add glitter to make it more exciting.
Name Writing with Confetti
Decorating names with confetti paper is a fun activity to help kids improve their motor skills and get creative.
Print the outlines of your kids’ names with a higher font size on thick paper. Cut colored sheets of paper into tiny squares to make the confetti.
Kids can decorate their names with confetti. 🎉
You can also get your kids more involved by letting them tear up the papers to make confetti. You can frame this and put it up in your house as an art piece.
Name Writing with Magnets
You can use magnets with the letters of your kids’ names.
Put the magnets on your refrigerator and let your kids practice forming their names every morning as a routine. You can also scramble the letters and get them to unscramble them to make their names. 🧲
Name Writing with Toy Cars
Playing with his toy cars is my son’s favorite pastime.🏎️
Print out templates of the name of your kids in both uppercase and lowercase, resembling road tracks. Laminate them to make them more long-lasting.
Your kids can have fun driving their toy cars through the letters of their names on the roads.
An activity that can keep your kids entertained and engaged.
Name Writing with Aluminium Foil
Spread a layer of aluminum foil and tape it to the working surface to keep it intact. Paint the letters of your kids’ names on the foil in big letters in both uppercase and lowercase letters.
Kids can paint over the written names to trace and practice writing them.
The tin foil also creates a sound that adds to the sensory experience of writing on it. 🔊
Name Writing with Paper Plates
On the back portion of the paper plate, write your kids’ names with a pencil as a guide to make holes.
Use a toothpick or a skewer to poke the holes along the lines of the letters.
Make your kids write along these holed lines with a marker to practice their names. 🍽️
These plates also make great sensory tools while the marker moves along the lines with tiny holes.
Name Writing with Paper Puzzles
The usual activity of building a puzzle with individual pieces, but this one involves names.
On a sheet of colored paper, write down your kids’ names with markers.
Then, tear up the paper into bite-sized pieces and let your kids join these pieces to form a puzzle with their names. 🧩
Name Writing with Clothespins
Clothespins that you find in everyone’s homes come in handy for this recognition and motor activity.
On a popsicle stick, write down the letters of their name, spaced a little apart from each other.
Label the clothespin with the individual letters that form the name.
Get your kids to pin the clothespin to the corresponding letters on the popsicle stick. 👚🧷
You can do the same activity in another way – write out letters of the name and place them individually in bowls. Now, pin the labeled clothespins to the bowl containing the matching letter.

Most children don’t need to be able to write well by the time they enter kindergarten but even preschool classes work on teaching name recognition. That includes both identifying and writing a child’s name.
When preschoolers are first learning name writing it’s important to make things really simple for them. Personally, I love to use name tracing worksheets to help develop those early writing skills.
Why Use a Name Tracing Worksheet Generator?
Did you know that there are over five thousand popular first names in the US alone? That’s an awful lot of variation even if your child doesn’t have a super unique name. It would be impossible to create tracing name worksheets for each and every name like we do with other early words.

How to Use Name Tracing Worksheets

It’s popular for parents, especially when doing preschool and kindergarten age name writing practice, to opt for dotted letters that can be traced over. Writing formation guides are optional and it really depends on the kid. Try experimenting with different font styles and see what works best for you.
Printable names in bubble letters are great for beginners or if you’re doing other crafts with their name. To turn the name writing worksheet into a custom name craft just enter the name with one repetition with the paper set to landscape.

Why Should Kids Learn to Write Their Name?
I usually recommend starting early with name writing because it’s something most kids will find useful even from a young age. Unlike other words, preschoolers have plenty of reasons to write their names.
With name writing practice kids will be able to label their own artwork, sign their name on cards (Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to practice name writing!), and it helps with general word recognition.
Since it’s more practical than other words it’s easier to keep preschoolers focused when practicing name writing. They’ll still develop important pre-writing skills like muscle strength, pencil grip, and letter formation while also getting to write something that relates to their life.
Finally, most preschoolers can identify their name. It can be challenging to convince pre-readers to write words they can’t yet read.
How to Make Name Writing Practice More Fun
Even enthusiastic kids can get burnt out on name tracing worksheets. It’s really important to make sure kids have fun while developing preschool skills. If something is too boring you might start getting resistance in the future when the pressure is higher to teach these early skills.
My best advice is to allow the child to lead in your learning. What that means is providing tracing name worksheets and encouraging kids to do them without being forceful. If they’re completely uninterested, pause and try again at a different time or when they’re older.
Another great way to make things fun is by turning the activity into something more than just writing practice. For younger children you could use the bubble letter font to create a colouring page. Then have them decorate their name however they want.
I’ve also created activities for my kids by painting the letters of their names and decorating them with stickers . These are both great for kids of all ages! Pre-writers will practice letter recognition and older kids can get creative.
For older children who need to practice their writing skills try changing out the names with other things they find interesting like TV show characters or friends’ names.
Can You Use These Free Name Tracing Worksheets With Older Kids?
Writing practice isn’t just for preschoolers and kindergarten students. Even older kids can benefit, especially if they’re learning cursive.
You can also use these writing practice printables to practice spelling. Just insert the spelling words and have your older kids trace over them on the worksheet. To encourage concentration on each letter you can have them alternate what colours they use to write.
Writing practice worksheets are also a great way to practice spelling and vocabulary in a second language at any age.

Analyzing Your Signature
- Signatures that include just your initials (with or without the middle initial) are usually considered more formal and businesslike than full-name signatures.
- If you’re worried about forgery, consider making your signature longer and more legible. Include your entire first and last name. Be sure to write clearly . It is easier to forge scribbled signatures than it is to copy the nuances of a practiced, legible signature.
Reworking Your Signature
- If your signature is messy or curly, you can emphasize one letter by making it sharp and clear. Likewise, make a single letter sloppy or fancy if you want it to stand out from an otherwise clean-cut signature.
- Turn one of your letters into an underline. This is commonly done with the last letter, but feel free to add a flourish to any letter that lends itself to the style. Letters with a long tail (y, g, j) are perfect. Drag the tail out beneath the signature.
- Underline your signature with loops. This is a very fluid, ornate way to spice up a signature. [3] X Research source
- Underline your signature with zigzags. These are similar to loops, but spikier and more angular.
- Use repeating elements. The three large ovals in this signature create an echo effect and help tie the whole design together.
- Allow your capital letters to encircle the lowercase letters. This is a useful way to spice up a name that doesn’t have any lower loops (g, j, etc.) to play with.
- Encircle the signature with loops. This creates a very regal, official-looking signature.
- Enlarge the bottoms of your letters. This is one of the simplest and most common ways to spruce up a signature.
Choosing Your Signature
- Your signature should be easy to write and reproduce. It should feel good coming off of your hand, and it should be simple enough that you can dash it off in a matter of seconds.
- Your signature should suit your purpose and personality. If you want to show your dramatic side, use a signature with flair. If you want to tell people that you are neat and ordered, your signature should reflect that.
- Your signature should be identifiable. It shouldn't just look like a scribble on the page – unless it's a recognizable scribble, and it comes out like that every time. Make your signature unique so that people know it's yours.
- Bear in mind that this does not apply to digital signatures. Most digital document-signing applications will save your personalized signature for later use. Sign it right once, and you can copy it to any future document. However, it may be wise to keep your digital signature consistent with your analog signature.

A name design is an image of your name written or drawn in an artistic style. The name design is also called name art design as it uses graphic elements & stylized text.
What is a Name?
A name is a word or set of words by which a person or thing is known, addressed, or referred to. Example: “My name is Olivia”. So, a name is a term used for identification. A personal name identifies, not necessarily uniquely, a specific individual human.
People usually have a first name and a last name. The first name is the given name and the last name is the family name.
Names are not unique, so many people can share the same name. Still, you can display your name in a unique style by using a name design.
How to Draw Name Designs?
There are lots of cool ways to draw your name. you only need to find a text style for your name design..
See some other cool ideas for inspiration when creating name design images.
These are just few of the text styles that you can use to write your name in a creative way:
- Calligraphy name
- Graffiti name
- Doodle name
- Tattoo name design
- Floral name design
- Monogram name
- Signature name design, etc.
To create name design you don’t necessarily need drawing skills. Use a graphic design software like Photoshop, Gimp, MockoFun, etc.
I will show you how to create a name design online with MockoFun . You will see how easy it is to make a text design online free.

TUTORIAL: How to Draw Name Designs Online
In order to draw name designs online, you have to open the MockoFun graphic design tool and start creating.
Step 1. Add Text Name (simple text, curved text, spiral text, heart text or wavy text)
To make a name art online, first, open a New document with the size that you need.
Next, go to Text menu and add a single line text.
You can also choose one of the text on path options. The curved text looks really great for name design. But, you can try the other fancy text style like:
- Circle text
- Spiral text
To edit text, double click on the text and write your name.
If you choose a special text like curved text, the edit text box will appear under the text.
Step 2. Choose the Font (cursive fonts, calligraphy fonts, signature fonts, graffiti fonts, sketch fonts, doodle fonts, etc.)
On the top menu you have a drop-down list with fonts. Choose a font that you like from a list of 800 free fonts online .
TIP: Do you want to upload your own font? In order to upload your font online you have to get a 💎 premium user subscription.
For this example, I will use the Antara Distance font which is a very beautiful cursive font.
There are lots of calligraphy fonts to choose from so it might take you awhile to decide. To pick the best font for your project is not that easy 🙂.

Step 3. Add Text Tails and Ligature to Create Unique Fonts (custom font or personalized font)
For writing names, I prefer to use cursive fonts or handwritten fonts. The calligraphy name design is one of my favorite text styles.
A cursive font with lines or a cursive font with tails looks even more beautiful.
Unfortunately, NOT all the fonts are fonts with tails . In fact very few free fonts have tails and ligatures.
How to Add Tails to Fonts?
MockoFun is a great font with tail generator. Create your own swash tail font in minutes.
Go to Elements > Shapes > Text Tails & Ligatures and choose a font tail from the list.
Pick the font tail that you want. It’s important to use the same color as the font.
You can resize the text tail, rotate and even add a Stroke outline if the text tail is too thin compared to your font.
Step 4. Add Text Symbols (star symbol, heart symbol, crown symbol)
With MockoFun you can insert text symbols in text. Copy paste a text symbol that you like.

Step 5. Add Graphic Elements (illustrations, shapes)
If you want your name design to look really awesome, you can add graphic elements like for example floral vector.
Go to Elements > Shapes and/or Elements > Illustrations and in the Nature category you have lots of flower vector images to choose from.
In the Elements > Illustrations gallery you have not only floral graphics but also some cute animals.
Use these graphics for kids to create a baby name art. You can create nursery wall art & nursery wall stickers with personalized details like the name of your baby, date of birth, etc.
Nursery wall decals that are usually used for baby room designs are: name signs (made from metal, wood or plastic), wall stickers and posters.
Use this magic photo name editor to create any name design you need for your project. Write name in style on photo online in just a few easy steps.
If you want to write name on image , simply Upload your own image or, choose one from the Elements > Photos gallery.
Step 6. Add Frames, Borders & Texture
If you want to add a floral frame or a watercolor frame, go to Elements > Frames > Nature or Elements > Effects > Watercolor and choose one from the list.
In the Effects category you have lots of textures. For this name design art I will choose an old paper texture .
To edit the texture image, use Blending Modes and Filters from the top menu. To write names in design is so easy and fun!
Step 7. Add Text Effects (texture & pattern, stroke/outline, shadow)
To edit name in style more quickly, try the premade text design ideas:
- Text Effects (These are alphabet letters images; the font can not be changed, only the colors). Try these letters if you look for fancy ways to write your name.
- Text Styles (These are text styles similar to the Photoshop text styles ; you can edit the font, color, outline, shadow, etc.)
Create name images with these cool text effects.
Note that, this is a name picture (name image), so you can NOT copy paste it as text. You have to download the name pictures (JPG, PNG, PDF) and insert them as images.
Use the cool text effects for business name design. The logo name generator is available for free. Plus, the name logo maker includes free premade logos.
Step 8. Save Template and Download Image
After you completed the name editing in different styles, you can do two things:
- Save the name template in your gallery for further use. Click on the Save button from the left menu.
- Download the name image as JPG, PNG or PDF . To download the name PNG with transparent background, go to Background from the left menu and make sure the background color is transparent.

These 32 name writing activities are a fun and engaging way to get the school year started. We know name writing is at the top of the list at the beginning of the school year! This task doesn’t have to be stressful or frustrating for students or teachers. Try any of these activities to keep name writing fun and engaging for students, and ensure easy prep for you! Students will practice recognizing, building, and writing their names all while having fun.
As a teacher, we know that prep for name-writing activities can be so time-consuming because separate activities have to be made for each student’s name. For students, the same paper and pencil task can get boring. We have the solution! ETTC’s Editable Name resource makes your job so much easier and gets students excited about name practice.

Name writing is important for young learners because it gives them confidence and gets them excited about learning. Keep it interesting for your students by using a variety of the 32 name-writing activities below to encourage name recognition, spelling, and letter formation. Writing names can be fun and engaging with these activities for young learners.
Activity 1. Letter Hunt
At the beginning of the year in Kindergarten, a favorite student read aloud is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr . (aff) This letter hunt activity is the perfect follow-up after reading the story. Students love talking about their names and identifying all the letters in their names. Take it a step further and have students compare and contrast the letters in their names with a partner.
The STEM and Story Alphabet Tree is another great activity to incorporate with this story as well. The additional alphabet tree challenge will help strengthen fine motor skills while building letter recognition, and students have so much fun with this!
2. Cut and Build
Before writing happens, some students still need to practice recognizing and learning the letters in their names. The cut-and-build activity allows students to cut apart and manipulate the letters. This is a great informal assessment to determine who needs a little extra help with the letter sequence.
At the beginning of Kindergarten, some students might still need a model to build their names, while others are able to do this without a model. It can be helpful to have a couple of copies on hand for extra practice. An added bonus is that this activity includes cutting and gluing practice too! 3. Dice Names
Incorporating other learning tools into name writing can keep the task exciting and fun. Using dice makes it feel like a game for students! The dice name activity in our Editable Names Bundle allows students to get a little creative and practice writing their names in different ways. This helps them become familiar with the different letter shapes as they practice writing the letters in the correct order for their names.
Name Writing Activity 4. Color Names
One of the first things we focus on in Kindergarten along with names is color words . So, this activity pairs perfectly with that skill. Students work on colors, color words, and name writing all in one! I have my students color the crayons with a colored pencil or crayon, and let them use a marker to write their names. This one is perfect for a center!
5. Rainbow Names
This is a student favorite! We like to cut this one out and hang it in the classroom for a colorful display. They love finding their rainbow hanging in the classroom. It also helps them start recognizing and reading the names of classmates.
6. Vowels and Consonants
Help students recognize the vowels and consonants in their names with this activity. The editable bubble letter font is easy for students to color, distinguishing the different letters in their names. Students color the vowels red and the consonants blue in this name writing activity. Have students count the number of vowels and consonants in their names, make a chart together and compare to classmates.
Activity 7. Sign Language Names
A favorite morning song in our classroom is Jack Hartman’s Sing it, Say It, Sign It . This song goes through all of the letters of the alphabet, and students love learning sign language along with Jack. So, when I gave my students the sign language activity from the Editable Names Bundle , they were so excited! They immediately recognized the different signs and loved finding the letters that paired with their names.
8. Play Dough Names
When parents ask what they can donate to the classroom, I always put play dough on the top of the list! There are so many ways play dough can be incorporated into learning to create playful learning experiences. Using the play dough printable name activity with your students will have them building fine motor muscles, learning letters, and building their names all at the same time.
I love using play dough names during group work because students love to talk about and show their peers what they have created. Not only do they love making their own names, but the names of their classmates too! Playdough letter mats are another great resource to use for fine motor and alphabet practice.
9. Build With Blocks
This Editable Names printable allows teachers to type student names in a font that looks like small building blocks! This is perfect for a center. I just add legos and students love building their names with the small blocks. Laminate and add name sheets for all students to the center, and students have fun building their friends’ names too.
Name Writing Activity 10. Emoji Names
Students love emojis, so incorporating them into name writing gets students excited. If your students love emojis as much as mine, check out the other back-to-school emoji printables in Education to the Core Premium .
The Editable Names Bundle includes a painting name page which is another great fine motor task. The font used in this activity is perfect for painting. Each letter has small paint circles that students can dab and fill in with a cotton swab. You will be surprised how quiet your classroom gets as students focus intently on painting each little circle in the letters! Cotton swab painting is always the quietest time in our classroom.
12. Name Writing Practice
We know that basic name writing practice can become boring for students, but there are simple and fun ways to change it up! Have a writing toolbox where students can choose various writing tools to write their names. Some student favorites are colored pencils, thin and thick markers, twistable crayons, highlighters, and sparkle crayons. I try to switch out the writing tools every once in a while to keep it interesting. The editable name practice activity provides students with traceable names along with blank lines so they can write their names too.
Activity 13. Secret Code Names
Students love to be a detective. So, when I put out the secret code name activity from the Editable Names Bundle , they get so excited. I like to print off copies of all student names and add them to a center. Put them in a plastic sleeve with a dry-erase marker and students can crack the code over and over! Once students have practiced with the secret code names, it gets them ready to try solving some other secret code words in the Secret Code Word Printable which is a lot of fun. The secret code activities are great to put out for early finishers.
14. Scrabble
The Scrabble letter font on this printable page is so fun! When you type your student’s name, each letter shows up as a Scrabble tile, and students can then color the tiles and add the numbers in the box provided. This is a great way to incorporate some math skills along with a name-writing activity.
15. Name Crown
Who doesn’t love to wear a crown?!? Students take so much pride when they wear their name crowns up and down the school hallway. They love hearing another teacher greet them by name. It really makes them feel so special! When these crowns are edited, each child’s name is printed in bubble letters on the crown for them to color and decorate. Add glitter or sticker jewels to the crown for extra pizazz.
Name Writing Activity 16. Spiral Name
Around and around and around we go! This is a fun one and so different. Since this activity can be a quick one for students, I like to either laminate them or put them in a plastic sleeve. Students can use a dry-erase marker and practice over and over.
Activity 17. Magic Names
For the magic names activity from the Editable Names Bundle , students write their names in each box with a white crayon and then color over it with a marker. Ahhh! The magic! They love seeing their names appear. I have never had a student ask to write their name so many times.
18. Word Art
Word Art is a student favorite! Edit this resource and student names are printed in each of the ten boxes on the page, but each name is in a different font. Students love to use markers, crayons, and colored pencils to color and decorate their names. Change the variety of tools often to make it fun and interesting!
Name Writing Activity 19. Name Alliteration
This is a great one to complete in a group for younger students, or individually for older students. In Kindergarten, students can’t do this one on their own at the beginning of the year. So, I like to work with a small group of students and complete this one together. We use the time as a “getting to know you” activity, and they learn about each other’s names as well as what alliteration is. It’s a great way to get them familiar with and listen to letter sounds.
20. Different Ways
Quick and easy to print, add some writing tools, and then put it in a center! I love to stock a writing center with name activities and all sorts of writing tools at the beginning of the school year. This name-writing activity that includes writing names in different ways is also a great one to send home for extra practice.

Create a Story activity is a great way to spark students’ creativity! For older students, this can be a really fun

When a student’s name is typed into this editable resource, only the correct boxes show up! So, students get to fill in the boxes all on their own. A model can be provided if needed, but students quickly catch onto the letter formation using the boxes.
23. Pyramid Names
Add this name-writing activity to a plastic sleeve for students to practice again and again. They love breaking apart the letters in their names to build a pyramid. Add different colors of dry-erase markers to the activity to keep it engaging.
Name Writing Activity 24. Name Maze
This name-writing activity is a fun challenge! Some of my students have never completed a maze before and they love seeing their names throughout the maze. Name Writing Activity 25. Seasonal Names
With ETTC’s new addition to Editable Names , students will have fun creating a variety of seasonal name activities. Name Writing Activity 27. Writing Names in Gel Bags
Gel Writing Bags are simple and easy to make, and are a great alternative to paper and pencil name writing. Here’s how to make them:
- Put clear hair gel in a Ziploc bag.
- Add some colored paint.
- Zip it closed.
- Seal it with duct tape. I like to use colorful tape.
- Test the bag to make sure it is sealed and doesn’t leak.
Students love using this bag to write their names. They can practice any letters or numbers with this bag so I like to keep a set of them to use throughout the year.
28. Shaving Cream
Along with play dough mentioned earlier, shaving cream is another item parents often donate to our classroom. It’s easy to put a small squirt of shaving cream on students’ desks or tables, have them smear it out, and then write their names. Simply swipe from side to side to erase, and write again! We do this as a whole group activity, and it allows me to walk around and help students that might be struggling. I can look for letter errors, and they can easily erase and correct them.
29. Confetti Names
Colorful, fun, and a workout for small fingers! This one takes a little bit of prep work so that you have the colored squares cut and ready for students. It’s also helpful if you write students’ names with a white crayon first. I usually do that so that the students have a model in Kindergarten. However, older students might be able to create their confetti names without the model.
Activity 30. Pocket Chart Names
Finding and manipulating names in our class pocket chart is one of the first activities we do in Kindergarten to help students learn to write their names. This gives students practice not only writing their names but the names of their classmates as well. I cut up sentence strips, write each student’s name on a strip and place it in the pocket chart. We take turns identifying student names during morning meetings and use these cards throughout the year for name activities.
31. Sensory Trays
Sensory trays with rice, sand, salt, or flour are a great way for young learners to practice writing their names. If you don’t have sensory bins in your classroom, any kind of solid plastic bin can be filled with an item of your choice to use for writing letters and names. Sensory trays are a great way to keep name writing playful and fun.
32. WaterColor
Students love painting, so watercolors are a fun name-writing activity. This one is simple but so much fun for students. They can fill in pre-made bubble letters with paint or write their names on their own. Writing each letter with their paintbrush is a colorful and fun way to practice names.

Within the first few weeks, their name writing will improve and they will be reading and writing the names of all of their classmates as well!

One of my favorite ways to practice writing is with water on a chalk board. I have one client who loves to put everything in the mouth, who cares if its a clean brush and water!

I am a preschool teacher with 15 years experience and five master degrees in education. You are absolutely correct about writing names. Your activities are perfect. Thank you for the reminder. School starts up again in a few days and I am going to have my little ones do your activities. So many times adults forget that young children learn best by having playing and fun. Skill sheets are NOT fun!! I wish teachers would sit down with a skill sheet and complete it. It wouldn’t take long before they realize how their hands ache and they stopped processing what they are suppose to learn. Just imagine how a child’s little hand muscles must hurt. Thank you again for the great ideas and reminders of how to help our children.

With the rise of technology, we seem to have lost the appreciation for the art of handwritten letters. If you are wanting to go old school, here are 50 fun, creative handwritten letter ideas to write!
For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to write. The written word is such a powerful form of communication and connection.
With the rise of technology, I seem to have lost my appreciation for a good old handwritten letter or note.
There are so many wonderful perks to the online world, of course. (Heck, it allows me to write this blog! Major bonus.) But, I do wish that we could find a way to maintain the art of writing letters by hand.
If we’re honest, texts are nice and convenient, but nothing will beat the specialness of a handwritten letter.
Why Write Handwritten Letters?
I believe in the power of a handwritten letter for so many different reasons. Here are a few…
- They show you really care.
Taking the time to physically sit down and handwrite a letter to a loved one shows that you really care. Not that sending off a kind text doesn’t… but it’s a whole other level of showing someone you’re thinking about them.
- It’s so fun to receive mail.
How often do you receive mail that isn’t bills, ads, or other adulting things? It’s such a wonderful surprise to receive something JOYFUL in the mail.
- They can be kept forever.
Sure, you can screenshot a nice text. But how often do you really revisit those texts?
With handwritten letters, you can physically store them all in a letter storage box or envelope to revisit sporadically.
To this day, I have letters from my childhood that I reread sometimes. They are so much more meaningful than a text or DM.
- You can have more fun with them.
Writing a letter is fun… but decorating a handwritten letter is even better! Decorate and dress up your snail mail with fun, creative add-ons, such as:
- cute cards/envelopes
- fun stickers
- colorful gel pens
Additionally, you can include fun things in your envelope that you couldn’t otherwise (ie. gift cards, bookmarks, additional notes, and little gifts) .
- They feel more meaningful.
All in all, handwritten letters just feel more meaningful. The recipient can recognize the intentionality and effort that went into it.
It really is a beautiful form of connection and communication that many of us miss out on!

- Write a thank you letter to a favorite teacher from your childhood. You may also want to include a life update and a current photo of you!
- Send a letter of appreciation to someone who has helped you through a hard time (even if it was years ago).
- Write to the kids you used to watch/babysit. Tell them a funny story from when they were younger.
- Write a letter to someone you feel resentful towards. (You don’t even need to send this one… This is more for your healing!)
- Choose an influencer that you feel connected to. Write them a letter telling them how they’ve touched your life. (You can usually find a P.O. box address if you search hard enough!)
- Write to a past sports coach telling them how they’ve impacted you and your life.
- Send a letter to a child in your life. Kids love getting snail mail!
- Think about a gift you received that you use often. Write a “thank you” letter to whoever gave it to you.
- Write a thank you letter to your favorite grocery store clerk or barista. Tell them how they brighten your daily errands!
- Write a letter to your future self. Store it somewhere safe and set a reminder on your phone to open it in 5-10 years.
How to Write a Great Letter
Now that you have tons of creative letter ideas, you may be wondering HOW to write the perfect letter.
Honestly, there is no such thing as a “perfect” letter.
This is the beauty of the art of handwritten letters. There is no need for perfectionism or stress. Simply writing someone a letter is special enough.
That said, if you want some guidance for letter-writing, I do have a few recommendations for getting started.
Here are 5 quick tips for a great handwritten letter:
- Address it to Someone Specific. If you are writing to a specific person, open the letter with their name. If you are writing to a stranger, address it with a clever opening (ie. if you leave the letter at the library, address it “Dear Fellow Book-Lover” ).
- Include a Term of Endearment. Now that you know to open the letter by addressing the recipient, feel free to get creative including terms of endearment. For example, “Dear Suzy” could be turned into “To the Stunning Suzy Smith” . Easy way to add that extra pizazz!
- Use a Creative Sign-Off. Instead of just signing your name, find a creative and personalized sign-off. You can even relate it to the context of the letter. For example, if you leave your letter in a coffee shop, sign off with “Happy Sipping!” .
- Add in Extras. Bookmarks, gift cards, photographs, stickers, etc. all make great add-ons to a letter.
- Use Your Own Voice. At the end of the day, the most special part of a letter is that YOU wrote it. Let your personality shine through. Make it your own.

First of all, let me just say that hoarding empty and half-filled notebooks can be a real problem! I could probably bet money that you have at least one abandoned notebook sitting around in your house somewhere. And I can’t say you’re alone in that.

Creative Writing: 8 Fun Ways to Get Started
Creative writing is a written art form that uses the imagination to tell stories and compose essays, poetry, screenplays, novels, lyrics, and more. It can be defined in opposition to the dry and factual types of writing found in academic, technical, or journalistic texts.
Characterized by its ability to evoke emotion and engage readers, creative writing can tackle themes and ideas that one might struggle to discuss in cold, factual terms.

1. Use writing prompts every week

2. Start journaling your days
Another easy way to get started with creative writing is to keep a journal. We’re not talking about an hour-by-hour account of your day, but journaling as a way to express yourself without filters and find your ‘voice in writing’. If you’re unsure what to journal about, think of any daily experiences that have had an impact on you, such as…
Special moments . Did you lock yourself out of your house? Or did you catch a beautiful sunset on your way back from groceries? Capture those moments, and how you felt about them.
People . Did you have an unusual exchange with a stranger at the bar? Or did you reconnect with someone you haven’t seen in years? Share your thoughts about it.
World events . Is there something happening in the world right now that is triggering you? That’s understandable. You can reflect on it (and let some steam off) while journaling.
Memories . Did you go down memory lane after a glass of wine? Great, honor those memories by trying to recollect them in detail on paper so that they will always stay vivid in your mind.
Life decisions . Are you having an existential crisis about what to do with your life? Write down your thought process, and the pros and cons of the possible decisions in front of you. You’ll be surprised to discover that, not only is it a great creative writing exercise, but it can also actually help you sort your life out!

3. Create an anonymous social media account
Like anonymous blogging, an incognito Twitter account sidesteps the pressure that comes with attaching your name to your work. Anonymously putting tiny stories out into the ether gives you the freedom to create without worrying about the consequences — which is great, so long as you don’t use it as an opportunity to troll people or spread conspiracy theories.
You could use the anonymous account in different ways. For example, you could…
- Tweet from unique points of view (e.g. a dog observing human behavior );
- Create a parody account of real or fictional people (e.g. an English poet from the Middle Ages );
- Challenge yourself to write tiny flash fiction stories that fit into Twitter threads.
Just remember, you’re not doing this to fool anyone into thinking that your account is real: be a good citizen and mark yourself a fiction account in your bio.
But if you’re not really a social media kinda person, you may enjoy our next tip, which is a bit more on the analog side.

4. Find an old photo and tell its story
Find a random old photo — maybe on the web, maybe from a photo album in a yard sale — and see what catches your attention. Look closely at it and try to imagine the story behind it. What was happening? Who are the people in it and how are they really feeling? Do they share a relationship, and of what kind? What are their goals and dreams?
In other words, bring the photo to life with your imagination. Don't be afraid to take artistic license with your story, as the goal is to be creative and have fun while writing.
How do you know it’s creative writing?
5. Create a character from a random name
Just as our universe started from a few simple elements, you can create a character from a few basic information, like their name, culture, and gender. Reedsy’s handy character name generator can help you with that, offering random names based on archetypes, Medieval roots, fantasy traits and more. A few examples? A Celtic heroine named Fíona O'Keefe, a hero’s sidekick named Aderine, or a Korean track star named Park Kang-Dae.
Once you've chosen their name, begin to develop their personality. Set a timer for 5–10 minutes and write anything that comes to mind about them. It could be a page from their FBI dossier, a childhood diary entry, or simply a scene about them boiling an egg.
Just ‘go with the flow’ and don’t stop writing until your time is up. Repeat the process a few times to further hone the personality. If you like what you end up with, you can always go deeper later with our character profile template .
If a stream-of-consciousness exercise is not your thing, you can try to imagine your character in a specific situation and write down how’d they respond to it. For example, what if they were betrayed by a friend? Or if they were elected in power? To help you imagine situations to put your character in, we made a free template that you can download below.

6. Construct a character by people-watching
People watching is “the action of spending time idly observing people in a public place.” In a non-creepy way, ideally. Sit on a bench on a public square or on a road-side table at your favorite café, and start observing the people around you. Pay attention to any interesting quirks or behaviors, and write it down. Then put on your detective’s hat and try to figure out what that tells you about them.
For example, the man at the table next to you at the restaurant is reading the newspaper. His jacket and hat are neatly arranged next to him. The pages make a whipping sound as he briskly turns them, and he grimaces every time he reads a new article. Try to imagine what he’s reading, and why he’s reacting the way he is. Then, try to build a character with the information you have. It’s a fun creative exercise that will also, hopefully, help you better empathize with strangers.
7. “Map” something you feel strongly about into a new context
Placing your feelings into new contexts can be a powerful creative writing exercise. The idea is to start from something you feel strongly about, and frame it into a completely different context.
For example, suppose your heart is torn apart after you divorce your life-long partner: instead of journaling or writing a novel about it, you could tell a story about a legendary trapeze duo whose partnership has come to an end. If you’re struggling with politicking and petty power dynamics at the office: what if you “mapped” your feelings onto an ant who resents being part of a colony?
