64-bit Excel 2010 Solver - Solver32.dll not found

I am trying to use Solver in 64-bit Excel 2010.

When I run Solver, it opens the solver window, states that it has results and then popups the following error message:

Run-time error '53' File not found: Solver32.dll

So, it would seem that the Solver32.dll cannot be loaded. It is however, available in the Solver Directory - i.e. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\Library\SOLVER contains SOLVER.XLAM and SOLVER32.dll

What have I tried so far...?

did a full Office 2010 Repair

this Microsoft forum suggested copying the Solver32.dll to C:\Windows\SysWOW64 (which is where Windows 7 stores it's 32-bit dlls).

this forum suggested installing the Solver add-in (.xlam and .dll) to ..\AppData..\Microsoft\AddIns

I have tried both of these and neither of them worked...

  • Are you running 64bit excel on a 64bit OS? Are you running solver from the ribbon or in vba? Do you have any other add-ins enabled? –  Raystafarian Jul 13, 2013 at 11:15
  • Yes, I am using a 64-bit OS. I am running solver from menus. Yes, I have other add-ins enabled... but I'd be mightily surprised if that was an issue. –  amaidment Jul 15, 2013 at 10:29
  • Does this still occur if you disable all the other add-ins? –  Raystafarian Jul 18, 2013 at 21:13

I just ran into this problem as well, though I'm using Excel 2013.

Here's what I did to solve the problem:

  • Go to File > Options > Add-Ins > Manage Add-Ins Go Button (at the bottom)
  • Uncheck Solver add in (in other words, remove it)
  • Completely close all Excel spreadsheets and programs
  • Follow step one again
  • Add solver back to Excel

For some reason this worked for me. It's important to completely close Excel (as noted in step 3): when I did this without closing excel, it didn't work.

Hopefully this helps someone in the future, since I doubt the original user still has this problem.

Solver for Excel 2016 Missing

Hi, I am working in a corporate environment and we are trying to get Solver to load. Running Office 2016 32bit on Windows 10

  • I can confirm the SOLVER.XLAM and SOLVER32.DLL are in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16\Library\SOLVER
  • I have tried repairing office
  • I can confirm the excel addin is active and I have tried multiple times to drop and re add the plug in and restart the application
  • I can see the plug in load on the startup splash before going into the application
  • I've ensured all macros can run

There is still no sign of the expected "Analysis" group under the Data Tab or the Solver app, if I bring up all command in the custom ribbon option there is NO solver command to run

We have Application Whitelisting in our environment but I've put in a bypass, we have antivirus in place but I'm not seeing any warning or errors or blocks. Normally Macro's would be disabled but for testing purposes I've temporary allowed them to run as it would appear from glancing at the software and guide online it would be running as a macro.

Are there any other security settings which might stop this from loading? are there any logs I can look at to get a better idea on why just nothing shows? I've also tried adding the other default Excel addins that should be in the analysis grouping and none of them show.

@Joshua Reynolds

Have other colleagues in the company encountered the same problem? Generally, we try to search logs if Excel crashes or we see any error message about Excel.

Please go to File > Options > Trusted Center > Trusted Center Settings > ActiveX Settings > You may choose "Prompt me before enabling all controls with minimal restrictions". And go to Add-ins, ensure you do not tick the box of "Disable all Application Add-ins".

Besides, you may go to Registry Editor, delete Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Excel , then restart Excel to have a look. (Important! Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur. )

If the steps above does not work, I suggest you uninstall Office and reinstall it to check this issue. If conditions permit, you could install the 64-bit Office.

i recently installed the solver add-in, but when i got to use the solver it says "Solver32.dll is unavailable-you will be able to define and edit solver models, but not actually solve them. To fix this, please use Excel Setup to reinstall solver" how do i reinstall it? or get it to work?

Re: Solver32.dll is unavailable... how do i get it to work

I was getting this same error just after installing Solver. I was able to get it to work by going to Tools --> Add-Ins, unclicking Solver Add-in, clicking OK, then closing and restarting Excel. Then, I went back to the Add-Ins and clicked Browse and opened up the Solver.xla file in my Documents & Settings\..Application Data\Microsoft\AddIns folder. It prompted me about replacing my current Solver add in and I said yes. Then, I checked the Solver add in, restarted Excel again, and it was working. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling and reinstalling Excel and all of its components, including all of the add ins. marty wrote: > i recently installed the solver add-in, but when i got to use the solver it > says "Solver32.dll is unavailable-you will be able to define and edit solver > models, but not actually solve them. 12. Error condition at cell address. Edit your formulas, or use Excel Interpreter in the Solver Model dialog.

  • Analytic Solver Help

This message appears when the Polymorphic Spreadsheet Interpreter first analyzes the formulas in your model after you click the Solve button or the Check Model button in the Solver Model dialog.  Address is the worksheet address of the cell (in Sheet1!$A$1 form) where the error was encountered, and Error condition is one of the following:

Many of these messages will never appear as long as you entered your formulas in the normal way through Microsoft Excel, because Excel “validates” your formulas and displays its own error messages as soon as you complete formula entry.  Some of the messages you may encounter are described in the following paragraphs.

Undefined identifier appears if you’ve used a name or identifier (instead of a cell reference such as A1) in a formula, and that name was not defined using the Insert Name Define… or Insert Name Create… commands in Excel, this message will appear.  The “labels in formulas” feature was dropped in Excel 2007, and the Interpreter does not support this use of labels in formulas.  You should define these labels with the Insert Name Define… or Insert Name Create… commands, or else set Solve With = Excel Interpreter to avoid using the PSI Interpreter.

Circular reference appears if Excel has already warned you about a circular reference in your formulas, and it can also appear if you’ve used formulas in a “potentially circular” way.  (For example, if cells A1:A2 contain {=1+B1:B4} and cells B3:B4 contain {=1+A1:A4}, Excel doesn’t consider this a circular reference, but the PSI Interpreter does.)  If you must use circular references in your model, in the Platform tab of the Task Pane, change the Interpreter option from “Automatic” to “Excel Interpreter” so you avoid using the PSI Interpreter.

External name appears if your formulas use references to cells in other workbooks (not just other worksheets), and the Interpreter is unable to open those workbooks.  You should ensure that the external workbooks are in the same folder as the Solver workbook, or for better performance, move or copy the worksheets you need into the workbook containing the Solver model.

Multi-area not supported or Missing ) appears if your formulas or defined names use multiple selections such as (A1:A5,C1:H1).  While the Interpreter does accept argument lists consisting of single selections, such as =SUM(A1:A5,C1:H1), it does not accept multiple selections for defined names, or for single arguments such as =SUMSQ((A1:A5,C1:H1), (B1:B5,C2:H2)).  If you must use such multiple selections, you’ll have to set Solve With = Excel Interpreter.

Note:  As mentioned above, in the standard Excel Solver, result code 12 was associated with the message “Another Excel instance is using SOLVER32.DLL. Try again later,” which does not occur in modern versions of Excel and Window.

This is not completely true.

I'm using a 64 bits Excel and I used a Solver addin.

Unfortunately during this  summer I installed a Premiun Solver demo, and when I came back to use my older addin version, it stops running and show me a 53 error.
