  • Are the colors, fonts , and headings consistent?

Your CV summary or objective is your attempt at an important first impression. Make sure the language you use is clear, and the HR manager doesn’t have to read it a few times to understand it - because they won’t.

Your CV summary or objective is your attempt at an elevator pitch with 2-3 sentences. 

As a rule of thumb, if you have more than 2 years of work experience - go for a CV summary .

If not - go for a CV objective .

Let’s break that down.

  • Jobs and years of work experience.
  • Relevant achievements and responsibilities.
  • What you look for, your goal .

With that said, your CV summary might look something like this:

To make your summary memorable, make sure you mention how your previous experience will be beneficial to the current you’re applying for. You should also include the following information:

  • What can you do for them? How can you help?
  • How will your previous experience help fit in the company’s current environment?
  • How can you help them grow while maintaining personal goals?

Now, how to write a CV objective ?

Just like your CV summary , your objective should be 2-3 sentences at most. But instead of describing your work experience, it should focus more on your motivation for applying for the specific job. 

If, for example, you’re a recent college graduate with not a lot of experience under your belt, you might want to opt-in for the CV objective instead. This will explain your motivations as well as what you hope to gain from the position.

Your work experience is where you get to brag a little, assuming it’s justified and accurate, of course.

This is the MAIN section of your CV and where most HR recruiters jump to when looking at your CV. 

It’s also the deciding factor of whether you’ll get hired or not - no pressure.

So, to perfect your work experience section, the standard format is as follows:

  • Job title/position.
  • Company name, location, description.
  • Achievements and responsibilities.
  • Date employed.

While it may sound straightforward, it can be fairly tricky to sum up your work experience in just a few bullet points. 

Many people simply list their responsibilities next to the position. 

While this is OK, you should always try to write achievements and accomplishments instead.

The HR manager most likely already knows what a business development manager or a sales manager does. You don’t want to seem like the average professional - you want to present yourself as an A-player, someone that shakes the company up (in a good way).

So, you might want to make it clear how you took the company from point A to point B. Here is how a well-written CV work experience looks like:

As you can see, the work experience order is in reverse-chronological order, with the most recent job first. And in terms of the activities, the details are backed up by numbers and percentages. 

It’s much more actionable as well and gives the hiring manager an idea of how you can benefit their company. 

If you want to assure them you’re going to be a right fit, find what skills and responsibilities are listed in the job and, make sure you place them in the relevant sections of your CV. Look for what skills and responsibilities they’re looking for in the job ad, and tailor your CV accordingly.

Look for some soft skills and optional requirements that are listed in the job ad, and if they apply to you - feel free to include those specific keywords.

  • “Increased customer support satisfaction closing rate”

With that said, in some fields (e.g. cashier in a supermarket), you don't have a lot of wiggle room in terms of achievements. In that case, you can simply stick to your daily responsibilities.

Consider your hard and soft skills . 

Hard skills are technical skills that can be measured and are directly related to your tasks.

Soft skills , meanwhile, are learned skills such as your personal attributes (e.g. leadership, communication, etc.).

Usually, job qualifications already include what they’re looking for in terms of skills. For example:

Now, all you’d have to do is tailor your CV to the qualifications list. 

For the hard skills that are backed up by your work experience, you can measure them or give yourself an honest rating, like so:

  • Attention to detail – Spotting small details that could have big consequences to your employer and dealing with them accordingly
  • Communication – Delivering information to others so that they receive and understand your ideas – This can be written (emails, letters, messaging systems) spoken (conversations, meetings, presentations) visual (videos, posters, images)
  • Creativity – The ability to generate new ideas such as new marketing campaigns, staff initiatives or images for adverts

How to list skills on your CV

Now you have a good idea of the types of skills that need to be present in your CV ( curriculum vitae ).

But, how you demonstrate those skills can make the difference between a winning CV, and a losing one.

Soft skills VS hard skills

Skill is defined as the ability to do something well, or having expertise in a particular area.

So, it’s understandable that employers want to hire candidates with plenty of skills.

At a high level, skills can firstly be categorised into 2 main categories ; hard skills and soft skills .

Type 1) Role specific skills – also called hard skills

Type 2) Generic skills – also called soft skills or personal skills .

Hard skills vs soft skills

Role specific or hard skills are specific profession-related skills that are needed to carry out particular job functions (e.g. speaking a foreign language , budgeting for finance roles or negotiation for sales roles)

Generic skills or soft skills are common skills that are required for most roles, such as communication , teamwork and problem solving .

Now that you understand the main types of skills available to use in your CV , it’s important to understand how to add them both to your CV

Many modern roles will require you to have skills from more than one of these categories.

For example, a sales role could require skills from sales , customer service , marketing and management + a range of soft skills

Always research your target roles thoroughly to determine which in-demand skills you need to  include in your CV .

How to add hard skills to your CV

It’s crucial to highlight role specific skills in your CV (or resume if you are in the USA) because they are normally what recruiters are briefed to look for above all else.

For example, a hiring manager will often tell a recruiter…

“I need you to find me somebody with 5 years sales experience who can generate leads, build relationships, lead negotiations and close deals”

They won’t usually give a soft skill brief like this…

“I need somebody who is a well organised, team-player with good communication skills”

Although those soft skills may be needed for the role, they are needed for most roles, so they won’t help recruiters find the right candidate – that brief could be applicable to thousands of jobs.

Role specific skills are so important to your CV because …

a) Recruiters search for hard skills only on job site CV databases, internal CV databases and LinkedIn

Therefore, the more relevant role specific skills you have in your CV, the more searches you will appear in.

The more searches you appear, the more times your CV will be opened – which will increase your chances of being called in for interviews .

b) Recruiters scan your CV for hard skills when they open your CV

When a recruiter opens your CV, they will firstly look to pick out some of the most important hard skills they’ve been asked to look for ( sales , negotiation , deal closing etc.)

Initially they won’t be looking for soft skills like planning and organisation – that will come later in the screening process.

So these two reasons make it vital for you to pack your CV with role specific skills, and make them easy to spot

So, how do you do this?

1) Add hard skills to the top quarter of your CV

The first few seconds of a recruiter or hiring manager opening your CV are crucial to the success of your CV.

If a busy recruiter with hundreds of CVs to review doesn’t see the skills they are looking for in the top quarter of your CV, they may close it down without even reading it in full.

So pack the area above the fold in your CV ( the areas visible without scrolling down ) full of in demand hard skills and relevant action verbs – to create a powerful first impression.

2) Add hard skills to your roles… with results

To show hiring managers how you apply your skills in the workplace, you need to weave them into your roles descriptions.

But simply listing the skills you use will not be enough.

You need to explain how you apply them, and what positive results they achieve for employers, clients and colleagues.

For example,

Don’t just write:

“Negotiating with customers”

Expand to say,

“Negotiating with customers to increase purchase values and boost monthly revenue for the business”

Expanding to show your results tells employers how valuable your skills are, and what impact you could bring to a new workplace.

How to add soft skills to your CV

Generic/soft skills are a little more difficult to express in your CV because they need to be implied rather than stated.

If you fill your CV up with terms that plainly state your soft skills, no recruiters will be able to understand what you do.

For example, look at the CV profile below.

Poor CV profile

It’s impossible to establish what this person does without any hard skills in the profile.

They could be a doctor, pilot, accountant , footballer …. Anything

Also, as I mentioned earlier, recruiters aren’t searching for soft skills, so you want to keep them to a minimum and save space for your hard skills.

So, how do you demonstrate your soft skills without simply writing them down on your CV?

You show them, rather than tell them.

So, rather than simply writing…

“I am organised”

“I am motivated”

“I am a team player”

(Tired phrases that recruiters have seen thousands of times and are meaningless on their own)

Instead, you should prove that you are an organised, motivated team player – by giving real life examples of this in your role responsibilities and achievements .

  • Leading a team of 10 to generate a target pipeline of leads over 3 months with regular check ins, progress updates, and supporting under-performers

By writing a sentence like this, you prove a multitude of soft skills such as motivation and team work , (without having to write them down) and demonstrate your role specific skills at the same time.

Junior candidate tip: If you have little or no work experience, you can use your hobbies and interests section to demonstrate soft skills. For example captaining a sports team can show elements of team work , leadership and motivation .

Key skills for your CV

Adding skills to your CV is absolutely essential if you want to get noticed and land job interviews.

But you must ensure that you understand the core skill requirements of your target roles so you can reflect them throughout your CV.

It’s also important to understand the difference between hard skills and soft skills, and how each should be added to your CV.

Hard skills are arguably more important to get down in writing, whereas soft skills should be implied throughout your role descriptions.

A CV is your first chance to promote yourself. A good CV might get you a job interview.

You usually need a CV to apply for a job or to give to an employer you’d like to work for.

Tips for writing your CV

Employers get lots of CVs to look at and have to decide quickly who they're going to interview.

When you write your CV, remember to:

  • use a clear font like Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri in size 11 or bigger
  • always use the same style throughout
  • use headings and bullet points to make it easier to read
  • be clear and to the point
  • get someone else to read it to double check your spelling and grammar

Information you need for your CV

Start with the job advert for the role you’re applying for so you can look at the job description, essential criteria and the company details.

If the job you're applying for does not have a job description, you can look at our job profiles to see what skills you’ll need and the typical things you’ll do in that job.

You should write your CV to match the job and company you're applying for to improve your chances of getting an interview.

Sections for your CV

Your CV should include a section for your contact details, an introduction, your education history, your work history and references.

Contact details

You need to let employers know how to contact you if they want to offer you an interview.

You should include your name, phone number, email address and a link to your work network profile, if you have one, such as LinkedIn .

You should not include your age, your date of birth, whether you're married or your nationality.

Introduction

This is a few short lines that sum up who you are and what you hope to do. It should go just under your name and contact details.

Make your introduction sound like you're the right person for the job.

Education history

You can add this after the introduction if you’re early in your career or do not have much work experience.

If you have a lot of work experience, you might want to change the order and show off your work history and experience first.

Whatever order you choose, you’ll need to include the:

  • names of your qualifications
  • name of the school, college or university where you studied
  • dates you attended

Work history

You should include details of any work placements, volunteering and paid jobs you’ve had. List the most recent experience first.

You should include:

  • the employer name
  • the job title
  • the dates you worked there
  • what you did, usually 2 to 3 lines using the STAR method

Gaps in your work history

It's normal to have some gaps between jobs and work experience when life events happen.

You can read our advice on how to explain gaps in your work history .

Short work history

If you’re applying for your first job, you can focus on skills you’ve learned through projects, work experience or volunteering.

You can also include your interests and hobbies that show some of the skills you have. For example, if you're a captain of a sports team, this demonstrates leadership and organisation skills.

You might want to include a section about references if there is someone who has agreed to give you one. This could be your current or previous employer, a teacher or someone respected in your community.

However you should not put someone else's contact details on your CV. Instead, you can say that 'references are available on request'.

In fact, the majority of candidates today do not receive a response on a submitted resume. So, the big question is, “When is it appropriate to follow up with an employer on my submission and how do I do it?"

There is no answer that will fit every scenario, but there are some good rules you should follow when following up on your resume submission.

1. Use The 1-2 Week Rule

Hiring managers and recruiters are busy and they can't acknowledge every resume and cover letter , even if they wanted to, because there's just so much that they need to process.

It's best to follow up one to two weeks after you have submitted your resume. That is generally the amount of time most employers take to review all applicants and contact candidates of interest for an interview.

2. Follow Up In The Morning

This may not always be universal, but in many cases, if you make contact during the early morning you'll have a better chance of reaching someone before they are bogged down with other tasks to do for the day.

Also, never follow up on a Monday. It's common for people to have a case of the " Monday Blues ," which could make them more likely to ignore your email or say "no" to an interview more quickly.

So, you should absolutely follow up on your resume in the morning—just not on a Monday morning.

3. Be Proactive And Polite 

Whether you're reaching out to the hiring manager by email or LinkedIn connection , it's important to be professional and not overzealous. Keep the message simple:

"Hi, XYZ. W e haven't met, but I applied for the XYZ position and I just wanted to be proactive and see if there's anything that I could do to further my candidacy or check on the status of my application. Thank you for your time."

This simple note at least gets you on the hiring manager's radar.

It could be that they've been meaning to get back to you and this note will get them to respond. It's also possible that they looked past your application and your note got them to take a second look. Either way, it's worthwhile to always follow up.

When you apply through a job board, there's a good chance that your materials will never get past the applicant tracking system (ATS) and never be seen by an actual person.

One simple fix is to research who the hiring manager or recruiter is that posted the position and email your materials to them directly.

The more efficient fix would be to take a proactive approach by putting together a bucket list of companies that you want to work for and start making connections on LinkedIn with people who work at those companies. You may already know some people who work there or have connections that can refer you to some individuals.

You applied to three jobs via referral, were invited to two job interviews, and made it through multiple rounds of interviews for one of the jobs before being passed over for someone with a little more experience.

The pattern here is that getting referred to a job by a professional acquaintance is a great way to land a job interview . This indicates that you're leveraging your network well and you should continue to focus on your networking efforts.

The next step is to review the interview process and determine what went well and what needs to be improved. Sometimes the interviewer will provide feedback , and that feedback can be valuable. However, not everyone is comfortable with giving feedback.
