Annotated bibliography writers, at your service

An annotated bibliography is an important tool for organizing and reporting research

An annotated bibliography is a list of sources used for a research project, along with descriptions of those sources that highlight the main information drawn from the sources.

For example, for a paper on criminal justice, a source in MLA style would look like this:

Okimoto, Tyler G., Michael Wenzel, and N. T. Feather. "Beyond Retribution: Conceptualizing Restorative Justice and its Determinants." Social Justice Research 22.1 (2009): 156-180. Print.

An annotated bibliography would then have a paragraph describing the information in the article.

Ultius can connect you with a writer who's able to provide an annotated bibliography that includes all of the sources formatted correctly in the style of your choice, as well as accurate descriptions of the information contained in those sources.

So, what will you be getting?

You will get a full annotated bibliography. You will have the opportunity to give us the sources that you want used; or, our writers can find the sources for you. Our writers are highly skilled at research and have access to a wide range of academic databases.

Examples of annotated bibliographies

Take a look at these, if you want to see how an annotated bibliography is supposed to turn out. Our writers have a lot of experience with producing this kind of document. These are examples of annotated bibliographies we have developed on various subjects.

How to write an annotated bibliography

Annotated bibliographies include a list of sources cited within a research paper. Each source is listed in alphabetical order, according to the citation style the paper requires. Underneath each source is a short summary of its information.

Some annotated bibliographies stipulate that the writer include specific statements and conclusions about each source.

Your annotated bibliography entry should state the following:

  • How the source relates to your paper topic
  • The author’s credibility
  • The methodology the author used in the source

Annotated bibliographies are used in a variety of academic disciplines, but are most often used in the humanities and literature.

The information included in each annotated bibliography entry validates that you have read and understood each source, while giving your audience assurance the sources are credible and relevant .

Annotated bibliographies should not contain more information than needed or requested. Try to limit the summary of each source to a short paragraph like the example below.

Bassioni, G., Mohammed, F. S., Al Zubaidy, E., Kobrsi, I. (2012, May 1). Risk Assessment of Using Aluminum Foil in Food Preparation. International Journal of Electrochemical Science, 7, 4498 – 4509.

This article focuses on the following three aspects of food and its consumption: weight loss, environmental scanning electron microscopy and inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry. An informed understanding of leaching assessment regarding aluminum was completed through the usage of these three methodologies.

Dr. Nancy. (2012, August 21). Leaching Metals and Chemicals from Cooking Surfaces. Retrieved February 18, 2013, from http://www.truthnhealth.com/2012/08/leaching-metals-and-chemicals-from-cooking-surfaces/

The article discusses the positives and negatives associated with leaching metals from cooking surfaces. An assessment of each type of metal is determined. The author makes it a point to speak in general and specifics on all metals covered. There is a significant emphasis on Teflon coating, iron and aluminum in the article. While there is no detailed or precise experimentation performed by the author of this article, there is much to be garnered through the facts and knowledge about each of the metals and their leaching capabilities.

Now that you have an idea of what an annotated bibliography is, let’s cover the steps required in order to produce a great one yourself.

Step 1: Preparing to write your annotated bibliography

Taking strong notes, having your sources available, and understanding them will save you precious time

Gather your sources. Gather the sources that you will be using or have used in your research paper . Some annotated bibliographies are written prior to the actual paper, while others are written after.

Understand your sources. Make sure to read each source and understand the points you need to include or summarize in the bibliography. Often, you will need to include specific information about the author’s background, methodologies, and research relevance.

Take good notes! Taking notes on these items as you read or review each source is a good practice that will pay off later. Remember to take notes on

  • Your impressions of the research
  • Key points an author is trying to make
  • How it relates to your paper

Once you gather your sources and have your notes prepared, make sure you’re asking the right questions when reviewing your annotated bibliography.

Asking the right questions - Questions to ask yourself while reviewing your annotated bibliography.

Step 2: Organizing your sources

Getting your sources together and making sure they’re in the correct format ahead of time can save you time and frustration later

Each citation style has separate criteria for different reference formats.

  • First, identify what format each source is in.
  • Then, identify which edition of the citation style you need to use. (For example, MLA 7th edition and 8th edition have different requirements for citing online sources).
  • Once you’ve identified the format of each of your sources, list them in alphabetical order, as if you were writing a work cited or reference page .

Asking the right questions - Questions to ask yourself while reviewing your annotated bibliography.

Step 3: What to include

Including things like info on the author, and vital information on your sources will make your annotated bibliography truly stand out

Some annotations of literary works may call for an identification of the piece’s themes, techniques, or inferred commentary.

In some instances, you will receive instructions on what information you need to summarize.

However, most the time you will only receive general instructions to include an annotated bibliography. In these cases, the best practice is to follow a generic format.

A generic format would include the following:

  • A sentence about the author’s background
  • A summary of the source’s information
  • How the information compares to your other sources
  • How the source contributes to your topic

Step 4: Be concise and succinct

Stick with what’s really vital, and avoid adding anything unnecessary to your annotated bibliography so reviewers can better digest the information presented

Proofread your annotations to ensure they are not missing any required information. Be sure to eliminate any repetitive language or wording. Do not give every detail about the information contained in the source.

Instead, aim to include critical key points. Read over each source thoroughly and compare the information to your annotations to ensure accuracy.

Writing your annotations (how to produce)

In some cases, the sources you’ll include in the annotated bibliography will be given to you. Most of the time though, you’ll be finding your own sources. Keep in mind that they’ll need to contain information relevant to the paper’s topic and/or meet specific requirements detailed in the instructions you have.

If you’re having trouble locating relevant sources, expand your search to other academic databases or libraries, revise and refine your keywords, or choose a different aspect of the general topic.

Here are some suggestions on where you can locate scholarly sources:

Links to databases

  • 1. https://scholar.google.com/
  • 2. https://academic.microsoft.com/home
  • 3. https://www.elsevier.com
  • 4. https://www.openedition.org/?lang=en
  • 5. https://www.ieee.org
  • 6. https://openlibrary.org
  • 7. https://www.jstor.org/
  • 8. http://orcid.org
  • 9. https://www.scopus.com/home.uri

Before you read each source, be aware of what type of information you need to include in your annotations. Do you need to include your own analysis of the author’s information or work? Or are you simply identifying and paraphrasing the information? Note that annotations do not generally include direct quotes and should largely consist of your own thoughts.

Once you’ve gathered the sources you’re going to use, the tips below can help you produce a great annotated bibliography.

1 Format and length

Make sure you are using the correct format and that your annotated bibliography isn’t too long or too short

The length of the annotated bibliography will depend on the number of required sources. Typically, two to three concise double-spaced annotations can fit on one page. You’ll need to follow normal formatting requirements when you list each source, including indentation rules and listing sources in alphabetical order.

Example citation of a journal article using APA style 6th edition

Chaney, C., & Robertson, R. (2013). Racism and Police Brutality in America. Journal of African American Studies, 17 (4), 408-505.

Note: The text of the annotation will need to be placed directly underneath and be fully indented.

Full annotation example of a journal article using APA style 6th edition

The authors, both university professors of social work and sociology, compare current police practices to practices that led to the beating of Rodney King. The authors simultaneously examine the public’s perception of police practices and brutality. Whether race/ethnicity and racism play a role in police practices is determined through the examination of the findings of the National Police Misconduct Statistics and Reporting Project. Chaney & Robertson (2013) use Grounded Theory Analysis to conclude the public perceives the police in four different manners - complete contempt, with suspicion, as those who engage in acts of brutality, or with respect. While the authors are able to uncover statistically significant evidence for a correlation between race/ethnicity, perceptions of law enforcement, and acts of police brutality, they are unable to provide data on how organizational culture and police force’s self-perceptions influence the variables of race/ethnicity, public perception, and acts of brutality.

2 Finalizing your bibliography

A thorough review of your annotated bibliography can help ensure you didn’t leave anything out, and give you the peace of mind of doing a job well done

Make sure to review the steps below in order to be sure you didn’t miss anything important.

Citation style . Have you listed your sources in the correct citation style? Keep in mind that some styles, such as Chicago, call for a slightly different format between sources listed as in-text citations versus sources listed on the bibliography page.

Ordering . Have you listed all sources in alphabetical order, with the correct indentations?

Summary . Does your annotation summarize the source’s information according to the instructions?

Wording . Is the language in your annotations clear and succinct?

Relation to topic . Do your annotations indicate how the source relates to the paper’s topic?

If you meet all the criteria above, you should be just about finalized and the tips below will help ensure your annotated bibliography is of the highest quality.

Additional tips and resources

With enough practice, writing an annotated bibliography will become second nature and may even become enjoyable. The Purdue OWL (Online Writing Lab) provides some additional examples of how to write annotations for literary works, which can be more extensive than the illustrations provided in this guide.

Since annotations of literary works are usually written in MLA format versus APA, Purdue Owl’s examples are also helpful in demonstrating the use of MLA. The link to the resource can be found here .

Also, our Citation Styles Guide section of the Ultius site can be an excellent resource. Throughout our site, you will find other resources as well that may be beneficial to giving your order the perfect final touch.

Using the tips above, you should be well on your way to producing a high quality annotated bibliography that will be sure to impress your peers, or reviewers.

How to Write an Annotated Bibliography, With Examples

Matt Ellis

An annotated bibliography is a type of bibliography that includes a comment by the author about the source in addition to the source’s publishing information. The author’s notes, or annotations, can discuss anything relevant to the topic, such as the source’s accuracy, the context in which it was written, or even your personal views on the source.

Annotated bibliographies are sometimes a requirement in assignments, so it’s a good idea to learn their rules. Below, we explain how to write an annotated bibliography in APA, MLA, and Chicago formats. We even include an annotated bibliography example for each.

What is an annotated bibliography?

Annotated bibliographies are a type of bibliography with notes from the author on each source. These notes are called “annotations” and generally run around 50–150 words . The notes themselves have a very specific format, depending on the style guide used, as explained below.

What do annotated bibliography notes talk about?

Annotations in bibliographies can discuss anything relevant to the paper’s or book’s topic or give context to the reader so they can better understand the source. There are no formal restrictions on what annotations can be about, but in general, they usually fall into these categories:

  • a brief overview of the source
  • the background of the source’s author
  • context about how or why the source was written
  • the accuracy of the source
  • any biases the source shows
  • anything the source doesn’t address
  • elements of the source that are particularly useful, like graphs or charts
  • your personal views on the source

How to cite sources in an annotated bibliography

Annotated bibliographies cite their sources the same way as any other type of bibliography , including a works cited page or reference list . Simply follow the standard rules for whatever format you’re using when writing the full citation.

If you need help, Grammarly’s auto-citation feature can automatically create a citation if you’re using one of the ten most popular online source websites: Wikipedia, Frontiers, PLOS One, ScienceDirect, SAGE Journals, PubMed, Elsevier, DOAJ, arXiv, or Springer. Otherwise, feel free to use our free citation generator to create a full citation in whatever style you need.

How to write an annotated bibliography in APA, MLA, and Chicago

How to write an annotated bibliography in apa.

Annotated bibliographies in APA follow the same rules for page margins, font, and line spacing as other pages in the APA format , which you can find in the link.

The annotations for an annotated bibliography in APA, however, follow specific formatting rules:

  • Annotations appear underneath the source they refer to.
  • Use an indentation of 0.5 inches from the left margin (1.5 inches from the edge of the page) for all lines of the annotation, just like a block quote.
  • The first line of an annotation does not get indented any further; use the same indentation as the other lines.
  • If the annotation spans more than one paragraph, use an extra indentation of 0.5 inches (2 inches from the edge of the page) for the first line of any paragraphs after the first. Again, this follows the same format as block quotes.
  • Sources are organized in alphabetical order by the creator’s surname, or last name (which comes first in citation entries).

How to write an annotated bibliography in MLA

The MLA format offers guidelines on both the formatting and content of annotations:

  • Annotations should “describe or evaluate sources.” They should not discuss minor details, cite evidence, quote the source, or re-list the points in the source’s argument.
  • Annotations can be written in either complete or incomplete sentences.
  • Place annotations underneath the citation.
  • Indent your annotation an additional 1 inch from the start of the entry (2 inches from the edge of the page). This differentiates it from the citation’s first indent (1 inch from the edge of the page) and its hanging indent (1.5 inches from the edge of the page).
  • If the annotation spans more than one paragraph, use an extra indentation of 0.5 inches (2.5 inches from the edge of the page) for the first line of any paragraphs after the first.
  • Title the page either “Annotated Bibliography” or “Annotated List of Works Cited.”
  • You can choose whether to organize sources by the subject, date of publication, or alphabetically by author or title.

How to write an annotated bibliography in Chicago

Because the Chicago format is designed to be flexible, its rules for annotated bibliographies are more open-ended than the other formats. Here are the guidelines for how to write an annotated bibliography in Chicago style:

  • If annotations are short and/or not included for every source, you can place annotations in brackets directly after the full citation, on the same line. If annotations are more detailed, start them on a new line underneath the full citation.
  • Each line of an annotation is indented an additional 0.5 inches from the start of the entry (1.5 inches from the edge of the page). It should be equal to the hanging indent of the full citation.
  • Annotated bibliographies may contain an author’s note at the top of the page. This should provide context about why the author chose these sources or how the page is organized.

Diamond, J. (1997). Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies . W. W. Norton & Company. This book, which won the Pulitzer Prize, attempts to answer the question of why some civilizations succeeded while others faded away into history. Author Jared Diamond emphasizes the environmental and geographical influences on a civilization as factors for success, more than a civilization’s culture or race. While this book proves scientifically that race is inconsequential in the success of a civilization, critics accuse Diamond of reducing the whole of human history down to “environmental determinism.”

Annotated bibliography FAQs

An annotated bibliography is a type of bibliography that includes a comment by the author about each source in addition to the source’s publishing information. The author’s notes, or annotations, discuss anything about the source that’s relevant to the topic, such as its accuracy, bias, or the context in which it was written.

How does it differ from a regular bibliography?

Just like other bibliographies, annotated bibliographies list the sources cited in the work, along with their publishing details. The difference is that annotated bibliographies also include notes from the author with extra information, whereas regular bibliographies do not.

How is an annotated bibliography structured?

The structure of annotated bibliographies depends on the formatting style: APA, MLA, or Chicago. Although each style has its own formatting rules, in general, the annotation comes after the full citation and is often indented in the same manner as block quotes.

Any annotated Bib Assignment is safe with us

Annotated bibliography assignments can either be stand-alone pieces to be assessed independently or part of a bigger assignment such as a research paper, capstone project, coursework, or dissertation. Whichever the case, completing an annotated bibliography requires rigorous reading, in-depth writing skills, and critical thinking.

As a list of relevant sources to your topic or subject area of interest and professional annotations that summarize/evaluate the source, care is needed.

We have come across these types of annotated bibliography:

  • The combination is a common type of annotated bibliography with information on the source and a critical evaluation as part of the annotation.
  • Informative annotated bibliography : this one summarizes the content of the source and offers details about the authors, arguments, hypothesis, reliability, and validity of facts and findings.
  • Evaluative annotated bib : this one entails a critical assessment of the source, majorly the strengths and weaknesses.
  • Indicative annotated bibliography : offers an overview of the source, its focus and delves into the major concepts and content of the source.

An AI-powered annotated bibliography maker will never understand that these variations exist. However, a human bibliography writer will read, internalize, and critically write an annotated bibliography for you. We have the best human-annotated bibliography writers. Hire one today!

How Much Does It Cost to Write an Annotated Bibliography?

Author Image

by  Antony W

October 13, 2023

Cost of Annotated Bibliography

In theory, writing an annotated bibliography is as simple as putting words on a paper.

In reality, it’s as an assignment that can leave you scratching your head for a while before you get it right.

Often, students turn to academic writing agencies, such as Help for Assessment , for help when faced with the challenge of writing this document.

It makes a lot of sense from so many fronts.

And as long as you work with a professional service provider, the results will be worth it.

Now hiring a content service to do the work for you raises an important question: how much does it cost to write an annotated bibliography?

The answer is simple:

It depends.

The cost for writing an annotated bibliography depends on length of the document, deadline of the project, discount offers, company plans and pricing, and level of education.

In general, though, especially from our observation, many academic writing companies charge between $15 and $30 per page for a well-researched, comprehensive, and relevant annotated bibliography.

What Determines the Cost of Writing an Annotated Bibliography?

Above is an overall summary of how much it costs to write an annotated bibliography.

Let’s expand on each factor to give you more insight. This will make it easy for you to understand what you get for the money.

Length of the Annotated Bibliography

First, understand that the length of an annotated bibliography will depend on the instructions you get from your instructor. Often, this comes down to the number of sources to cite and annotate.

Let’s break this further to make sure we’re on the same page, first by making sure you understand the concept of writing this kind of an assignment.

By definition, an annotated bibliography is a list of sources that you’ll use to write a research project. And unlike a bibliography, this kind of an assignment requires an annotation of at most 150 words.

In terms of overall cost, you’ll spend between $15 and $30 per page depending on spacing.

A one-page, double-spaced annotated bibliography will cost you $15. A single-spaced paper will cost you double the amount, which is $30.

Depending on the spacing you’d like to use, you simply have to take the number of pages, multiply that by the cost per page, and you find how much you’re likely to spend.

Level of Education

When you look at the pricing table across different academic writing platforms, you’ll notice that the cost of essay writing service vary depending on the level of education.

You can see the variation in the table below.

The same case applies to the annotated bibliography, with the one written for a master’s level costing more than what’s written for the undergraduate level.

That’s self-explanatory from the table above and therefore doesn’t need additional information.

Company’s Plans and Pricing

One of the most interesting thing we noted about academic writing services online is that the pricing model is never the same.

Which means this is also a factor that determines cost to write an annotated bibliography.

That’s expected because each service has its own terms and conditions of service.

We can divide these services into at least three tires:

  • Cheap custom essay writing services
  • Standard academic writing agencies and
  • Premium (or professional) academic writing agencies

Cheap essay writing services aren’t bad, and actually their annotated bibliography can be of good quality. Often, the level of writing is so-so.

Standard academic writing services are somewhere in the middle. The quality of the work produced is often up to scratch, as the authors tend to do a lot of research to produce an excellent copy.

Premium writing services, such as Help for Assessment, are the top tire, which give you the biggest bangs for the bucks. They put a lot of time and research into creating high quality content, which will not only make it easy for you to understand your topic but also enable you to come up with a final paper assignment that will impress your instructor at a first glance.

When it comes to writing an annotated bibliography, therefore, you get what you pay for. Overall, it makes a lot of sense to pay well for a good annotated bibliography, and ther3’s no good reason why you should settle for less.

Discount Offers

The consensus is clear:

Discount offers won’t save you a ton of money, but they’re still something at the end of the day.

On the surface, professional academic writing services offer these discounts to attract prospects and convert them into buying customers. But the real value with this is that you can get an annotated bibliography written for you even if you’re on a tight budget.

Plus, it’s also a good way to save some bucks, which you can use to order an essay writing service in the future.

Not all writing services provide discounts on assignment writing, though. Keep this in mind when searching for the ideal offers online.

At Help for Assessment, we believe in providing the best value while remaining as affordable as possible. Why not place your order here and take advantage of our 25% discount on your order?

Deadline of the Project

How much time do you have left before your tutor asks you why you haven’t submitted an annotated bibliography for your research paper?

Is your deadline flexible, or is the work so urgent that you want it written and delivered fast?

Whichever the case, the cost of writing an annotated bibliography will vary depending on the due date.

(Insert cost vs deadline chart)

As you can see on the figure above, the longer the deadline the cheaper the paper, while an assignment that’s urgently required will attract a lot of money overall.

Here’s why:

Annotated bibliography writing services, such as Help for Assessment, treat urgent assignments as critical, giving it the most priority so that you can get the project sent to you on time.

After completing the write up, our writers and editors cross check the work for relevance, uniqueness, and quality to make sure it’s up to the required academic standards.

How to Prepare an Annotated Bibliography: The Annotated Bibliography

  • The Annotated Bibliography
  • Fair Use of this Guide

Explanation, Process, Directions, and Examples

What is an annotated bibliography.

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.

Annotations vs. Abstracts

Abstracts are the purely descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly journal articles or in periodical indexes. Annotations are descriptive and critical; they may describe the author's point of view, authority, or clarity and appropriateness of expression.

The Process

Creating an annotated bibliography calls for the application of a variety of intellectual skills: concise exposition, succinct analysis, and informed library research.

First, locate and record citations to books, periodicals, and documents that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.

Cite the book, article, or document using the appropriate style.

Write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book or article. Include one or more sentences that (a) evaluate the authority or background of the author, (b) comment on the intended audience, (c) compare or contrast this work with another you have cited, or (d) explain how this work illuminates your bibliography topic.

Critically Appraising the Book, Article, or Document

For guidance in critically appraising and analyzing the sources for your bibliography, see How to Critically Analyze Information Sources . For information on the author's background and views, ask at the reference desk for help finding appropriate biographical reference materials and book review sources.

Choosing the Correct Citation Style

Check with your instructor to find out which style is preferred for your class. Online citation guides for both the Modern Language Association (MLA) and the American Psychological Association (APA) styles are linked from the Library's Citation Management page .

Sample Annotated Bibliography Entries

The following example uses APA style ( Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association , 7th edition, 2019) for the journal citation:

Waite, L., Goldschneider, F., & Witsberger, C. (1986). Nonfamily living and the erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review, 51 (4), 541-554. The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living.

This example uses MLA style ( MLA Handbook , 9th edition, 2021) for the journal citation. For additional annotation guidance from MLA, see 5.132: Annotated Bibliographies .

MLA Style Annotated Bibliography | Format & Examples

Published on July 13, 2021 by Jack Caulfield . Revised on June 14, 2022.

An annotated bibliography is a special assignment that lists sources in a way similar to the MLA Works Cited list, but providing an annotation for each source giving extra information.

You might be assigned an annotated bibliography as part of the research process for a paper , or as an individual assignment.

MLA provides guidelines for writing and formatting your annotated bibliography. An example of a typical annotation is shown below.

Kenny, Anthony. A New History of Western Philosophy: In Four Parts . Oxford UP, 2010.

You can create and manage your annotated bibliography with Scribbr’s free MLA Citation Generator. Choose your source type, retrieve the details, and click “Add annotation.”

Table of contents

Mla format for annotated bibliographies, length and content of annotations, frequently asked questions about annotated bibliographies.

The list should be titled either “Annotated Bibliography” or “Annotated List of Works Cited.” You may be told which title to use; “bibliography” is normally used for a list that also includes sources you didn’t cite in your paper or that isn’t connected to a paper at all.

Sources are usually organized alphabetically , like in a normal Works Cited list, but can instead be organized chronologically or by subject depending on the purpose of the assignment.

The source information is presented and formatted in the same way as in a normal Works Cited entry:

  • Double-spaced
  • Left-aligned
  • 0.5 inch hanging indent

The annotation follows on the next line, also double-spaced and left-aligned. The whole annotation is indented 1 inch from the left margin to distinguish it from the 0.5 inch hanging indent of the source entry.

  • If the annotation is only one paragraph long, there’s no additional indent for the start of the paragraph.
  • If there are two or more paragraphs, indent the first line of each paragraph , including the first, an additional half-inch (so those lines are indented 1.5 inches in total).

MLA gives some guidelines for writing the annotations themselves. They cover how concise you need to be and what exactly you should write about your sources.

Phrases or full sentences?

MLA states that it’s acceptable to use concise phrases rather than grammatically complete sentences in your annotations.

While you shouldn’t write this way in your main text, it’s acceptable in annotations because the subject of the phrase is clear from the context. It’s also fine to use full sentences instead, if you prefer.

  • Broad history of Western philosophy from the ancient Greeks to the present day.
  • Kenny presents a broad history of Western philosophy from the ancient Greeks to the present day.

Always use full sentences if your instructor requires you to do so, though.

How many paragraphs?

MLA states that annotations usually aim to be concise and thus are only one paragraph long. However, it’s acceptable to write multiple-paragraph annotations if you need to.

If in doubt, aim to keep your annotations short, but use multiple paragraphs if longer annotations are required for your assignment.

Descriptive, evaluative, or reflective annotations?

MLA states that annotations can describe or evaluate sources, or do both. They shouldn’t go into too much depth quoting or discussing minor details from the source, but aim to write about it in broad terms.

You’ll usually write either descriptive , evaluative , or reflective annotations . If you’re not sure what kind of annotations you need, consult your assignment guidelines or ask your instructor.

An annotated bibliography is an assignment where you collect sources on a specific topic and write an annotation for each source. An annotation is a short text that describes and sometimes evaluates the source.

Any credible sources on your topic can be included in an annotated bibliography . The exact sources you cover will vary depending on the assignment, but you should usually focus on collecting journal articles and scholarly books . When in doubt, utilize the CRAAP test !

Each annotation in an annotated bibliography is usually between 50 and 200 words long. Longer annotations may be divided into paragraphs .

The content of the annotation varies according to your assignment. An annotation can be descriptive, meaning it just describes the source objectively; evaluative, meaning it assesses its usefulness; or reflective, meaning it explains how the source will be used in your own research .

No, in an MLA annotated bibliography , you can write short phrases instead of full sentences to keep your annotations concise. You can still choose to use full sentences instead, though.

Use full sentences in your annotations if your instructor requires you to, and always use full sentences in the main text of your paper .

How to Write an Annotated Bibliography - MLA Style

What is an annotation, how is an annotation different from an abstract, what is an annotated bibliography, types of annotated bibliographies, descriptive or informative, analytical or critical, to get started.

An annotation is more than just a brief summary of an article, book, website, or other type of publication. An annotation should give enough information to make a reader decide whether to read the complete work. In other words, if the reader were exploring the same topic as you, is this material useful and if so, why?

While an abstract also summarizes an article, book, website, or other type of publication, it is purely descriptive. Although annotations can be descriptive, they also include distinctive features about an item. Annotations can be evaluative and critical and the two major types of annotations included here demonstrate the difference.

An annotated bibliography is an organized list of sources (like a reference list). It differs from a straightforward bibliography in that each reference is followed by a paragraph length annotation, usually 100–200 words in length.

Depending on the assignment, an annotated bibliography might have different purposes:

  • Provide a literature review on a particular subject
  • Help to formulate a thesis on a subject
  • Demonstrate the research you have performed on a particular subject
  • Provide examples of major sources of information available on a topic
  • Describe items that other researchers may find of interest on a topic

There are two major types of annotated bibliographies:

A descriptive or informative annotated bibliography describes or summarizes a source as does an abstract; it describes why the source is useful for researching a particular topic or question and its distinctive features. In addition, it describes the author's main arguments and conclusions without evaluating what the author says or concludes.

For example:

Gabbin, Joanne V. "Maya Angelou--The Peoples' Poet Laureate: An Introduction."  Langston Hughes Review , vol. 19, Spring 2005, pp. 3-6.  LION: Literature Online , gateway.proquest.com/openurl?ctx_ver=Z39.88-2003&xri:pqil:res_ver=0.2&res_id=xri:lion&rft_id=xri:lion:ft:criticism:R04012678:0&rft.accountid=14580. This scholarly article is a critical introduction to the works of Maya Angelou, and the criteria surrounding her success as a poet laureate. The author points out Angelou's literary influences, which include William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Douglas Johnson, Langston Hughes, among others. This article also points out that her poetry lacks cultural boundaries, yet her trademark lies in the secular chants, songs, and games of the black vernacular tradition. The author discusses dialect and vernacular rhythms in several of Angelou's poems, and compares several of her works to the racy dialect of Sterling Brown and Langston Hughes. Also discussed is her political cultural voice and her deep understanding of emotion. This article is distinctive in its discussion of the need for a poet laureate to add to an audience's collective memory.

Please pay attention to the last sentence. While it points out distinctive features about the item it does not analyze the author's conclusions.

An analytical or critical annotation not only summarizes the material, it analyzes what is being said. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of what is presented as well as describing the applicability of the author's conclusions to the research being conducted.

Analytical or critical annotations will most likely be required when writing for a college-level course.

Gabbin, Joanne V. "Maya Angelou--The Peoples' Poet Laureate: An Introduction."  Langston Hughes Review , vol. 19, Spring 2005, pp. 3-6.  LION: Literature Online , gateway.proquest.com/openurl?ctx_ver=Z39.88-2003&xri:pqil:res_ver=0.2&res_id=xri:lion&rft_id=xri:lion:ft:criticism:R04012678:0&rft.accountid=14580. This scholarly article is a critical introduction to the works of Maya Angelou, and the criteria surrounding her success as a poet laureate. The author points out Angelou's literary influences, that include William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Douglas Johnson, Langston Hughes, among others. This article is a good resource for those wanting to explore criteria related to the achievement of the award of poet laureate and how Angelou meets the criteria. This article begins to explore the poet's works and suggests her ability to add to an audience's collective memory. The author is a professor of English at James Madison University and has authored a book on Sterling Brown and numerous critical essays.

Please pay attention to the last three sentences. They give information about the author and critique the author's research.

To write an annotated bibliography here are the steps:

  • Choose your sources -  Before writing your annotated bibliography, you must choose your sources. This involves doing research much like for any other project. Locate records to materials that may apply to your topic.
  • Review the items -  Then review the actual items and choose those that provide a wide variety of perspectives on your topic. Article abstracts are helpful in this process.
  • The purpose of the work
  • A summary of its content
  • Information about the author(s)
  • For what type of audience the work is written
  • Its relevance to the topic
  • Any special or unique features about the material
  • Research methodology
  • The strengths, weaknesses or biases in the material

Annotated bibliographies are arranged alphabetically by the first author's last name.

Please see the  MLA Examples Page  for more information on citing in MLA style.

APA Annotated Bibliography Format

The American Psychological Association states that your instructor should set the guidelines for your annotated bibliography, but does ask that the list be formatted according to their standard reference page rules (see Section 9.51 of the  Publication Manual ). Since there are no set rules for creating one, you may be wondering how to create an annotated APA bibliography. If your teacher or professor requests one, don’t worry, here are our recommendations:

  • Make sure you create your references according to APA’s guidelines. If you need some help, here’s a great  APA citation website , which shows how to create references for electronic sources. We also have a page on developing a reference for an  APA journal . Need other source types? Check out the other helpful pages on EasyBib.com.
  • Annotations should be kept short and are usually not more than one paragraph.
  • For more information on writing an annotation, visit the general  annotated bibliography guide .

Here’s a run-through of everything this page includes:

  • Quick APA formatting guidelines

Annotation example

Visual example, using the easybib annotation tool, troubleshooting, quick  apa  formatting guidelines:.

  • Use 1-inch page margins on all sides.
  • The entire page should be double-spaced.
  • Title your page, “Annotated Bibliography”. Center and bold it.
  • Left-align references. If a reference runs over more than one line, any line(s) that comes after the first should be indented a ½ inch from the left margin.
  • Organize your references alphabetically by the first word in the reference. (See further details in this  APA Reference Page  guide).
  • Add the annotations on the line right after their corresponding reference.
  • Indent annotations ½ inch from the left margin.
  • Include a page number in the upper right corner; if this is a professional paper, it should be a running head.

For an annotated bibliography APA example, we’re using the same description as above. The only thing we’re going to change is the structure of the reference. For an APA bibliography, the reference needs to be an  APA citation , and the description can be formed the same way as above.

Here’s what the  APA book citation  for  The Elements of Eloquence: Secrets of the Perfect Turn of Phrase  looks like:

Forsyth, M. (2014).  The elements of eloquence: Secrets of the perfect turn of phrase.  Penguin Books.

The author, Mark Forsyth, examines the rhetorical devices used in the English language, analyzing the patterns and formats that create memorable quotes. He traces the history of rhetoric to the Ancient Greeks, and provides an abridged timeline, following their use and evolution through to modern day. The author also explores the broader subject of persuasion and maps out the role that the figures of rhetoric play in it. In all, he examines over thirty devices, dissecting notable passages and phrases from pop music, the plays of William Shakespeare, the Bible, and more to explore the figures of rhetoric at work within each of them. Thorough definitions accompany this examination of structure to demonstrate how these formulas have been used to generate famously memorable expressions as well as how to reproduce their effects.

Annotated bibliography tool

Again, even though the APA style does not support the creation of bibliographies that include annotations, many schools and professors expect their students to include summaries or commentary alongside their citations in APA style.

Solution #1: How to write an annotation

Annotations are brief paragraph summaries of your source and may include details about how you plan to use the information in your paper, or the quality of information in your source. Take these steps:

  • Read through the source.
  • Identify the main thesis theme of the source then consider how you would summarize the article and its purpose in one sentence.
  • Evaluate the source. Is the author(s) qualified? Is the source and its arguments credible? Well-written? Why or why not?
  • How does the source relate to your paper?
  • Write your annotation based on the above steps. Choose only the points that would most help you or your reader gain an understanding of the source and its significance.

Here are writing tips:

  • Avoid describing every event, statistic, or detail that occurs in your source.
  • Focus on details that are relevant to your topic or your paper. Help the reader understand why the source was selected and is importance.
  • Think about how the information impacts your perspective, how it contributes to your topic, and the effect on your overall paper.

Annotated paragraph example:

Solution #2: How to correctly format an annotation with multiple paragraphs

  • Indent the entire annotated paragraph at ½ of an inch. When done correctly, the left edge of the annotated paragraph will look entirely straight, as in the first example below.
  • If there are multiple paragraphs, follow step one but use a second 0.5-inch indention on the second and following paragraphs.
  • Avoid indenting the paragraph at 0.5 inch like a regular essay paragraph, as shown in the third example.

Single annotated paragraph example:

Multiple annotated paragraphs example:

In his novel, “A True Story of John Doe,” Samuel Smith outlines his life through the eyes of a fictional character. His recollection outlines the immigrant experience and demonstrates how modern life in England came to be.

Chapters two and three outline the novelty of moving to a new location by describing the eventual progression to culture shock. Smith describes life as beautiful and wonderous in chapter two by emphasizing sensory experiences. However, in chapter three, he slowly gains awareness of the differences between his current and previous lives and of how the locals treat him. Smith nullifies the sensory experiences and, instead, focuses on the depth of the human emotion. I intend to use this source to compare to my own experience as an immigrant.

To create an annotated APA bibliography, follow the below recommendations:

  • Order your reference entries in alphabetical order similar to how you would order entries in the reference list.
  • If you want to add an annotation to an entry, add it as a new paragraph below the reference entry. The entire annotation is indented 0.5 inches from the left margin.

He proves that political and class commitments are reproduced in the forms of thinking that are valued in societies. Through his research, Lim asserts that such curricula engage in creating our understanding of what thinking and rationality are.

To format an annotated bibliography in APA, follow the recommendations given below:

  • Set the left, right, top, and bottom margins as 1 inch.
  • Use double-line spacing.
  • Title the page “Annotated Bibliography.” Set it in bold.
  • The title should be aligned to the center of the page.
  • As you format reference entries, left-align all references in the annotated bibliography section. If any entry runs over more than a line, indent the subsequent lines 0.5 inches from the left margin.
  • Arrange all reference entries alphabetically according to the surname of the authors.
  • Provide your annotations below the reference entry for which you want to give your annotation. Indent annotations 0.5 inches from the left margin.

How to Write an Annotated Bibliography: Step-by-Step Guide

Annotated bibliography definition.

An annotated bibliography is a list of brief summaries of articles, books, and other publications dedicated to one particular topic. This type of paper may be assigned as homework within a course, as a research article, or become a part of more profound work like a thesis or dissertation. An annotated bibliography serves the following purpose: it teaches you to critically analyze and summarize information from sources. This little tool may become a great tool in writing academic papers of any kind. A qualitative work with existing knowledge helps your development as a researcher.

how to make an annotated bibliography

What is an annotation? It is a short description of an article or another source which considers purpose, content, and features. The aim of the annotation is to give concise content of the source of information and help the reader decide whether it is worth reading this particular source. Annotation indicates what new findings the article has in comparison with others related to other similar sources.

How to Do an Annotated Bibliography: What’s So Special

Students frequently confuse annotated bibliographies and references (or works cited lists). Simply saying, an annotated bibliography is an extended version of a reference list. Each source is formatted in the required format (APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.) and supported with a summary. An annotated bibliography has two elements:

  • a citation in required citation format;
  • the text of the annotation.

Let’s see how it looks on the example and you will quickly feel the difference.

Reference list (APA format):

Mishra, A., Chaturvedi, P., Datta, S., Sinukumar, S., Joshi, P., & Garg, A. (2015). Harmful    effects of nicotine. Indian Journal of Medical and Paediatric Oncology: Official Journal of Indian Society of Medical & Paediatric Oncology , 36(1), 24–31.

Annotated bibliography (APA format):

Mishra, A., Chaturvedi, P., Datta, S., Sinukumar, S., Joshi, P., & Garg, A. (2015). Harmful effects of nicotine. Indian Journal of Medical and Paediatric Oncology: Official Journal of Indian Society of Medical & Paediatric Oncology , 36(1), 24–31.

In the following text the author has evaluated the effects of nicotine on various organs of the human organism. The article contains the analysis of studies related to the influence of nicotine on animals and humans. Authors highlight the chemical properties and metabolism, mechanism of action, immediate effects, toxicity, and the most common diseases connected with nicotine consumption.

An annotated bibliography is a great tool to learn how to summarize, assess a great volume of information, and reflect on what you have read. With the help of an annotated bibliography you will know more about the topic, as you will be forced to read the sources with high attention. It is a great practice when writing a thesis or dissertation. In this case, an annotated bibliography helps you understand the gaps in the existing knowledge and come up with the topic for your own research.

Sometimes, annotated bibliographies are published as articles or independent publications. Such works give an extensive overview of sources dedicated to a particular topic. This publication frequently helps other researchers.

Steps on How to Make an Annotated Bibliography

1. Examine the assignment. Make sure that you have understood the requirements in your assignment. Ask your teacher to clarify points that you can’t understand or to answer some questions. Each annotated bibliography has unique requirements, so be sure that you know what formatting style you need to follow.

2. Pick a topic. Depending on the assignment, your topic may be related to your course or planned research. Consider the right scope to be able to cover the specific issue to the fullest. Define the limitation of the topic to make your paper comprehensive and concise. If you were assigned a specific topic, make sure that you have understood it properly.

Concentrate on problems and questions that should be resolved. It is essential, if you are writing an annotated bibliography for a research paper, to consider research questions or the thesis statement that you have already formed. For this case, when you were given a specific topic (for example, government response to terrorism), try to develop the core questions that you want to explore, and this will help you get more concentrated on the angle of research. (For example: How does the UN, EU, and US react to terrorism? What legislative base regulates it? What is the effect of such reactions? How do terrorist organizations respond?)

Think about what kind of material you should look for. You may need governmental reports or documents that need special access, so be sure that the material you will need is accessible. Before making the final choice, make a brief search of available sources to know whether the topic is sufficiently explored. Don’t read full articles; skimming through the annotation or footnotes will be enough.

3. Outline the list of sources. Start browsing the internet, databases, library, and other available sources to find articles that match your topic. Make a list of links and save documents in one single place. Use your critical thinking skills to pick the sources that will cover your topic from various angles.

You will choose the type of sources depending on the topic and requirements. Start your search from reference lists in textbooks and recommended literature. Then move to the library and internet.

Your aim is to find answers to the stated problem and issue in available and reliable sources of information that address your topic the most. The quality of chosen sources greatly influences the level of your annotated bibliography. Make sure that the article covers the topic from different perspectives.

How to work with sources? Make a hard copy of articles or save materials on your computer. Use a pencil or editor to highlight the main points and citations, and add comments about its meaning in footnotes or fields.

4. Organize citations. Start an annotated bibliography with listing citations of chosen sources. Apply the required format to each point of the list. Some students prefer to put one citation and immediately write an annotation, while others prefer to organize the list of citations and only then proceed to annotations. The way you organize your writing process is totally up to you.

5. Write annotations. Add one space after a citation and write the annotation. The length of the annotation will depend on the requirements and purpose of the annotated bibliography. In an annotated bibliography that gives a concise overview of the topic, the annotation may take several sentences. At the same time, an extensive analysis of the issue may take a one-page annotation. If your annotation will be long, divide it into several sections if it’s logically appropriate.

When you start reading the sources, you may find that it takes large amounts of time. How to analyze the source more effectively? Don’t read the whole article at once. Creating an annotation involves active reading that needs concentration and knowing what to look for. Look for the following points while reading an article or another source:

  • Determine the central question/claim/thesis.
  • Pay attention to the theoretical approach the author uses.
  • Identify the scope of this work within the researched question or topic.
  • Notice the main findings or points of each section of text.
  • Determine what stance the author takes.
  • Pay attention to methods the author used in his or her research.
  • Consider the data and evidence used in the article.
  • Think what questions the text will create.

If your annotated bibliography is a part of your research paper, you need to determine how you plan to use this article and why. Also, state the limitations of the study and the effectiveness of the investigation. If the annotated bibliography is a separate assignment, try to evaluate the contribution of a particular source in the investigation of the problem.

For analyzing the first source you will spend more time, as you will learn how to orient yourself with the source on what to look for. You will speed up when processing other sources.

A finished annotated bibliography should have the following features:

  • it fully explores the existing sources about the stated issue;
  • it corresponds with the chosen topic of research.

6. Write the introduction. Some annotated bibliographies need an introduction. For example, if you need to write an annotated bibliography as an article for a scientific journal, you will probably need to introduce basic information on the topic. Include a short introductory paragraph at the beginning of your text, if required. Here you can explain why you have chosen the topic, describe the research question, and what method you have used to choose sources. Also, mention why certain sources were excluded from the list.

7. Proofread the text. Every text needs to be checked for content and mistakes. As you finish the first draft, read the text once more and make sure that everything sounds logical and is in its place. Look through requirements and check whether your text fits them. When you will be pleased with the content, move to correcting all mistakes that you find in the text.

Tips to Help You Create an Annotated Bibliography

  • Make sure that you have narrowed the focus enough to add value to your work.
  • Concentrate on the topic and always bear it in mind while working with sources.
  • Keep in mind that your annotated bibliography should make sense. Fill your paper with important and essential information.
  • Look through the available finished annotated bibliographies in your library or over the internet to see a complete picture.
  • Write down your thoughts and questions that arise while reading. This will help you get closer to the context.
  • Write down unknown terms or phrases you don’t understand and clarify them. Such actions will help you understand the issue deeper.
  • Read several finished annotated bibliographies and write down phrases that you can use in your paper.

Mistakes to Avoid in an Annotated Bibliography

  • Don’t think that an annotation is the same as an abstract. An abstract is a part of a journal article or dissertation that summarizes the content of the work. The annotation describes and evaluates the particular source.
  • Don’t include articles that don’t relate to the chosen topic.
  • Format an annotated bibliography according to the requirements. Don’t skip this step. The quality of your finished paper depends on formatting and content.
  • Don’t mention the title of the source in the text of your annotation, as you have already mentioned it in the citation.

1) Annotations are not abstractions. Since you are doing research, your main purpose is to evaluate and assess, not simply describe. Abstractions perform a mainly descriptive function, while in your annotations you have to catch the essentials of each work. After looking at your annotation, a reader will understand the main concepts used in the source and whether he or she needs to see the full text.

2) Give a summary, not a retelling. Don’t be too detailed. Remember that your annotation has to be 100-150 words, and no more. You don’t need to render the whole text you’ve read, however fascinating and scientifically significant it is. Your reader can find it on his or her own—this is actually why you are writing an annotated bibliography.

3) Try to avoid writing fillers. Don’t start your sentences with “the article deals with” or “the purpose of this research report is.” Also try to avoid “it was found that” and “it is suggested that.” They don’t perform any significant function, but make your text longer and harder to read. It may seem that such expressions make your research paper or report sound more scientific, which is partly true. On the other hand, they make the text more complicated and diluted.

Some people also think that deleting such phrases will make their research paper appear rough and hard to read, since they performed the connection function. Well, remember the first rule of the good writing? If your sentence sounds the same without an expression, and the expression doesn’t perform any particular function (like adding style, flavor etc.), delete it.

Useful Phrases for an Annotated Bibliography

Sometimes it may become a challenge to find the right words and phrases to analyze and evaluate the text. Here is a list of phrases that you may find helpful while writing your annotated bibliography:

– The main idea is … – The article touches/clarifies/discusses/examines/reveals the aspects/issues/problems/characteristic features/processes/views of researchers … – The article is the continuation of article X … – The article sums up the results of the study … – The article is devoted to the study/detailed analysis … – The purpose of the article is to analyze … – The article reveals/analyzes the problems … – Particular attention is paid to … – The author comes to the conclusion that … – The author focuses on/gives a generalized characteristic … – The author seeks to follow the process … – As a research task, the authors attempted to evaluate … – As a key evidence the author uses … – Based on the study/analysis … – The article is devoted to the current problem/thorough analysis … – This problem/issue/research is insufficiently studied and requires further research. – The author suggested the following solutions … – Such point of view may interest specialists/researchers … – Particular attention is paid to … – In conclusion, the …

How to Choose Topics for Annotated Bibliography

What kind of topic do you need when collecting your sources and describing them? Well, it’s better to call them aspects, but you definitely need them, because sometimes you need to describe, and sometimes—to evaluate. Here are three main points of view on the books and articles you are going to review:

1) Evaluate. What is evaluation? Here you need to find out some background information about the source, its author, the epoch it was created in and so on before you start to writing an evaluative description. You are supposed to comment on the accuracy and reliability of the source, and give reasons for your opinion.

For example, if you are reviewing a historical chronicle written by the court historiographer, the text will likely be pompously praising the ruler of that time and mentioning only his good deeds. Even if there weren’t any, they will be invented. But if you manage to find some opinions of ordinary people, they will reveal more down-to-earth perspectives and tell about sufferings and hardships that people had to go through. So, when describing each of these two sources, you have to mention that the first one is biased towards describing only good, while the second one is likely to describe only bad things. In this way you will achieve an objective evaluation of a research source.

2) Connect to your research. It’s also a good idea to evaluate your materials not only in terms of general knowledge and historical process, but of your research. For example, all your sources and research data provides some evidence that cats enjoy being scratched on the back, but one source provides some evidence that they actually do not. So, while describing your source, you can write that it contradicts traditional perception of scratching cats mentioned in many other sources used in your research. You can also give reasons why the author of this article drives such a conclusion (if you know them for sure, for example, if they are clearly stated in the paper).

3) Don’t hesitate. Sometimes it’s hard to decide whether you need a short summary or an evaluation of this particular book. Entrust this to your inner scientific intuition. If you feel that the book is significant, and you relied on theories from it heavily in your research, then you need an evaluation for sure. However, if you mentioned it only once and just an example, a brief description will be more than enough.

How Simple Is It To Write Annotated Bibliography?

Not all essays require this section. However, the more complex things, such as dissertations or coursework, demand it. It's essential to point out which resources you used when you researched. It is crucial to collect all references and sources with a short explanation of why they are relevant for the assignment. But, most students have no idea how to write it. Many don't make it a priority. Plus, writing the bibliography isn't so simple.

The key is knowing what to add, what to skip, and more. In addition, you need to be familiar with annotations. When all things are considered, many decide to buy an annotated bibliography instead of writing it. The rules for the annotation bibliography must be written depending on the specific standard. Typically there are two primary citations. Let's review them below.

What Citation Styles Exist?

There are two primarily used citation styles, MLA and APA. There is also the Chicago style, but it's not so popular. MLA is created by the Modern Language Association. If you are demanded to use this citation style, there're some annotation requirements:

  • Use double spaces.
  • Create the source list in alphabetical order by the name of the author.
  • Keep the alphabetic order of the list by title in case the author's name is unknown.

When mentioning the names of essays or books in the annotation, quotation marks must be used. For journal names, italic font is the norm; For APA, which stands for the American psychological association, there's a manual with strict regulations. There is an official handout where you can easily find all requirements and get annotation info.

The following must be present:

  • The name of the author
  • The source's last editing date
  • The web address of the source, or the number of pages.

Some people use a citation generator. By handing your project to us, all annotations, details, and information will be added following the regulations. You don’t have to write the paper either, we can do that as well. We often get the following question: “Can you help me with my annotated bibliography?”. The answer is yes! If you don’t know how to write, we’ll do it! Writing annotated bibliography isn’t simple. We understand how confusing it can be. We're here to help you with it. A set of regulations must be followed, and for a student, it can be too complicated, time-consuming, and often overwhelming.

There's no need to add extra stress to your life. Instead, we'll help you reduce it. You can turn to us, and we'll add the necessary adjustments. With our authors, you'll get the best! Definitions

A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "References" or "Works Cited" depending on the style format you are using. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).

An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or more of the following.

For more help, see our handout on paraphrasing sources.

For more help, see our handouts on evaluating resources .

  • Reflect : Once you've summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?

Your annotated bibliography may include some of these, all of these, or even others. If you're doing this for a class, you should get specific guidelines from your instructor.

Why should I write an annotated bibliography?

To learn about your topic : Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent preparation for a research project. Just collecting sources for a bibliography is useful, but when you have to write annotations for each source, you're forced to read each source more carefully. You begin to read more critically instead of just collecting information. At the professional level, annotated bibliographies allow you to see what has been done in the literature and where your own research or scholarship can fit. To help you formulate a thesis: Every good research paper is an argument. The purpose of research is to state and support a thesis. So, a very important part of research is developing a thesis that is debatable, interesting, and current. Writing an annotated bibliography can help you gain a good perspective on what is being said about your topic. By reading and responding to a variety of sources on a topic, you'll start to see what the issues are, what people are arguing about, and you'll then be able to develop your own point of view.

To help other researchers : Extensive and scholarly annotated bibliographies are sometimes published. They provide a comprehensive overview of everything important that has been and is being said about that topic. You may not ever get your annotated bibliography published, but as a researcher, you might want to look for one that has been published about your topic.

The format of an annotated bibliography can vary, so if you're doing one for a class, it's important to ask for specific guidelines.

The bibliographic information : Generally, though, the bibliographic information of the source (the title, author, publisher, date, etc.) is written in either MLA or APA format. For more help with formatting, see our MLA handout . For APA, go here: APA handout .

The annotations: The annotations for each source are written in paragraph form. The lengths of the annotations can vary significantly from a couple of sentences to a couple of pages. The length will depend on the purpose. If you're just writing summaries of your sources, the annotations may not be very long. However, if you are writing an extensive analysis of each source, you'll need more space.

You can focus your annotations for your own needs. A few sentences of general summary followed by several sentences of how you can fit the work into your larger paper or project can serve you well when you go to draft.

How it works

Get answers to the most frequently asked questions about our annotated bibliography writing service, do you use chatgpt to create annotations.

No, our company uses only experienced writers to provide students with papers. Only experts can make connections between different sources and develop unique ideas based on their experience and knowledge.

How many sections does a proper annotated bibliography paper have?

Usually, it consists of 3 sections, namely, the title, citations, and short annotations (descriptions).

Can I buy an annotated bibliography and use it for another section such as a literature review later?

Students often create an annotated bibliography and develop this section into a literature review later. You can easily order this type of paper and turn it into a more developed and thematically organized review or ask a writer to do it for you.

When I buy annotated bibliography online, how can I know the number of pages to order?

Depending on the requirements, one annotation is about 100-150 words. We do not count the citation for the source, thus you get about 2-3 annotations per page.

Should I buy research paper annotated bibliography online or a specific type does not matter?

Of course, our writers focus their attention on the type of order and annotations for research papers have their specific features. For instance, sources are more likely to be no older than 5 years and from peer-reviewed journals and books. It is always best to clarify the type to get exactly what is needed.

Can I trust a cheap annotated bibliography writing service?

If cheap prices do not compromise the quality and a company has its guarantees and standards, then there is no reason to distrust a service. Our company works hard to maintain affordable prices and provide high-quality content. Owing to years of experience and a loyal customer base, we are happy to offer discounts and reliable academic support to students.

Does your annotated bibliography writing service guarantee papers free from plagiarism?

Yes. Original texts are why students order papers at TopWritingService.com. You can also get a full PDF plagiarism report with your paper at an extra price.

I need the latest version of an annotated bibliography APA, can you do it?

No problem, our writers will follow the latest standards to provide you with a paper in accordance with the demands of your chosen style.

Is MLA annotated bibliography a proper format for a nursing paper?

As a rule, the MLA format is the best option for humanities; nursing most commonly demands APA. However, it is a proper format if your professor indicates it in the instructions and our writers will follow them and format an annotation in terms of the 9th edition (the newest MLA version), if needed.

Can a writer use annotated bibliography topics for psychology?

Yes. We work with different topics and cover many issues and notions in psychology. Thus, it is easy for an experienced writer to craft an amazing bibliography and develop a topic for you.

Is it safe to pay for annotated bibliography online?

It is safe with our service because we make sure that every transaction is secure and your data remains protected. You can also choose the most convenient payment options such as iPay and Google Pay.

A bibliography is a list of sources that have been used when researching a topic. They are also called "Works Cited" or "References" depending on the style format used.

An annotation is a summary and/or an evaluation.

Therefore, an annotated bibliography is when you write a summary and/or evaluation for each source in your bibliography. This means your bibliography page with include 1) your sources with complete citation in alphabetical order and 2) a summary and/or evaluation and/or reflection along with each source.

Your annotations can include up to three items, depending on the requirements of the assignment:

  • Summary - you will summarize the main points of the source, paraphrasing the point of the source as well as the topics covered.
  • Evaluation - you will evaluate the source on its usefulness and compare/contrast it with others sources in your bibliography. You will discuss its reliability and credibility as a source, and whether it is bias or objective. You also might discuss the goal of the source.
  • Reflection - you will reflect on the overall usefulness of the source for your research. Was the source helpful to you? How can the source be used in your research paper or project? Did the source cause you to think differently about the topic?

Remember, an annotated bibliography may include all or some of these parts, so get specific instructions from your professor.

To learn more about your topic - Engaging in the creation of an annotated bibliography offers valuable benefits for researchers at all levels. Beyond mere information gathering or quote selection, it encourages deeper engagement with each source, promoting critical reading and analysis. This process fosters the development of critical thinking skills and a robust understanding of the chosen topic, ultimately leading to the formulation of a well-defined, debatable, and interesting thesis statement - a cornerstone of any successful research project.

To help other researchers:  Furthermore, annotated bibliographies can extend their impact beyond the individual researcher. When published, they serve as valuable resources for other researchers in the field, providing a comprehensive overview of the chosen topic, facilitating further exploration and understanding.

There are numerous online essay writing services, which offer cheap prices, good written papers for any academic level and meeting of the deadlines. If you have any doubts that you will be able to write your essay yourself with correct grammar, stylistic, thesis, bibliography, citation formats and so on – then you definitely need professional essay writing help. All our papers are only custom written and never resold, thus if you decide to pay for your writing – you could be sure that it is absolutely original and was produced only for you.

How to write an annotated bibliography

Annotated bibliography might seem to be an easy task, as there is no need to make an outline, to work out the structure of the essay and so on. However, this is only partially correct. In order to produce a good annotated bibliography it is necessary to put a lot of effort and time into it. You should look for credible sources, which could be used to reveal the main theme of your writing from various sides. Often, if you are to write an argumentation essay for example – you would need to study the sources, providing and discussing various arguments. The description of each source should not simply be a summary of your reading, it should be done in the way to prove, that this source would be contributing to better research of the main topic. In addition you should not forget that annotated bibliography, as well as any other bibliography, should be formatted correspondingly.

Most teachers and tutors pay a lot of attention to proper application of formatting styles.

Write my annotated bibliography for me

“One of my biggest problems is lack of time. I like studies, I like learning new things and gaining new experiences, but taking into consideration the number of subjects, I need to study, I always lack time.

I am doing also my sports and I don’t want to quit. So, when I had to do my annotated bibliography for psychology course, I realized that there is a huge number of sources, which I would have to read first before writing my task. Even though the theme was not difficult, I wanted to buy my annotated bibliography from professionals and as I didn’t want to look for somebody to be the creator of my paper, I just placed my order with this writing service. They told me that would find the writer themselves. The prices here are affordable – so this was the best option, I could think of.”

Annotated bibliography is a difficult task

“Annotated bibliography is one of those tasks, which are extremely difficult for me. I don’t have problems with writing book reports, article reviews, research papers, but annotated bibliography is something really undesirable for me. There is nothing doing and certainly from time to time I am to fulfill this task as well. I was lucky to find a good service, where I get all the necessary writing help, mostly I turn in to them for ordering of my annotated bibliography. Especially if this is for such subject, as philosophy for example. I am not that good at philosophy and our professor always wants us to read the original sources, which are so difficult to interpret and understand. The writers here are specialists in philosophy, so this is not difficult for them probably, as they managed to do my annotated bibliography quickly enough.”

What is an Annotated Bibliography?

An annotated bibliography is a list of sources you plan to use in your research project with notes explaining why you want to use them.  For each source, cite , then summarize and evaluate .  Usually, you will write one or two paragraphs for each source, but be sure to check a ssignment instructions.  Annotations can be just a sentence, or they can be a full page for each source.

Why Write an Annotated Bibliography?

Writing an annotated bibliography helps you engage deeply with your sources and think about how you will use them in your research paper.  After you finish your annotated bibliography, writing your research paper will be a lot easier.  You will save time and produce better results.

How to Write an Annotated Bibliography:

Before you write, make sure that you have the best sources you can find.  Read all of your sources and take notes.  Are you 100% satisfied with the sources you found?  Are they high-quality and relevant for your topic?  If you think you can find better sources, do!  Ask a librarian if you need help.

Once, you have good sources, write your annotated bibliography by following these steps for each source:

  • Summarize - What is the source about and what does it say?
  • Evaluate - Why is the source credible?  How will you use it?  Why is it better than other sources?

Also make sure that your annotated bibliography as a whole follows the formatting guidelines of the style you are using (e.g., margins, headers, page numbers, etc.).

What is in the Evaluation?

Student often struggle with the evaluation part of an annotated bibliography, but think back to the tools we used to evaluate sources - The 5 W's!  These will give you a framework for what to include.

Who created it?

  • Why should you trust them?  Are they qualified?
  • Did you detect any bias?

What type of information is it?

  • What type of source is this (newspaper, magazine, scholarly article, video...)?
  • What type of information does the source contain (statistics, interviews, opinions...)?
  • What claims does the source make, and do they sound reasonable?

Where did you find it?

  • What organization published the source?  Why should we trust them?
  • For websites, what is the domain (.edu, .gov, .org...)?

When was it created/updated?

  • Is the source current for your topic?

Why is this a good source?

  • How does the source support your thesis or answer your research question?
  • Why is this source better than others?  There are many sources on your topic.  What makes this one special?
  • What were the source's strengths and weaknesses?

Examples in MLA 9

Format Guidelines:

  • Your professor may require a longer entry for each source, so be sure to follow directions!
  • Use a ½ inch hanging indent for the citations and indent the annotation 1 inch.
  • Double-space the entire annotated bibliography (not shown).

Alexander, Michelle. The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness . New Press, 2021.

This book claims that the modern criminal justice system unfairly treats African Americans and compares this to Jim Crow laws and segregation. Due to mass incarceration, there are disproportionately many African Americans in prison. The author (Associate Professor of Law, Ohio State University) makes logical arguments that are easy to follow. Unlike many other sources on the topic of race and mass incarceration, this book provides extensive statistical evidence to support the author’s claims. For example, while African American males make up 14% of the total U.S. population, they make up over 40% of the U.S. prison population. This source will help show that there are racial differences in incarceration rates and that mass incarceration leads to institutionalized racism.

Al-Tahrawi, Khalil. "Virginia Seen as Good for Business." Washington Post , 31 Dec. 2021, p. A12. Opposing Viewpoints .

A recent survey by the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council ranked Virginia as the most business-friendly state in the nation and Maryland as thirty-sixth. Virginia’s low taxes and fewer corporate regulations make it ideal for business. The author of this newspaper article offers a balanced look at the survey results, pointing out that the organization conducting the survey is very conservative and that there is some disagreement about whether low taxes make a state business-friendly. States with higher taxes are able to spend more on infrastructure, such as roads, schools, colleges and other features that enhance the state economy. The author presents viewpoints from the governor of Virginia and several Maryland politicians. This article will help to demonstrate that state policies impact how attractive a state is to business owners .

Makeba, Mariam, et al. "An Investigation into Alleged Hauntings." British Journal of Psychology , vol. 94, no. 2, 2021, pp. 195-211. Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection .

The authors of this article examine two supposedly haunted sites in England in order to determine the cause of the hauntings. They find that the “hauntings” are caused by psychological mechanisms activated by environmental factors such as lighting and magnetic fields. This article was published in the peer-reviewed scholarly journal British Journal of Psychology and the authors are professors at two prestigious universities. Their findings are similar to other articles on this topic, which explain reports of “ghostly activity” as psychological reactions to environmental stimuli. This article, however, identifies several new factors that were not considered in other articles – such as changes in lighting and magnetic fields. This supports my thesis that paranormal events have real-world psychological explanations, and it demonstrates how environmental factors can deceive the mind.

Introduction to Annotated Bibliographies

Always check with your professor to confirm their guidelines and preferences for any annotated bibliography assignments.

The format and content of annotated bibliographies can vary based on citation style and course requirements.

They are essentially a list of citations, each citation followed by an annotation, or a (typically short) piece of writing describing and/or evaluating the source.

Annotations can be descriptive, evaluative, and/or critical, and they are designed to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the cited source.

General Guidelines for Making an Annotated Bibliography

  • Look through more sources than you need
  • Filter out works that don't fit within your topic
  • Choose works that provide you with enough perspective
  • You may use RefWorks and should consult our Citing Sources Guide to ensure correct formatting
  • Citation formatting may vary based on the format of the source (e.g., the citation guidelines for academic journals differ from the guidelines for books or websites)
  • Read each source
  • Comment on the authority of the author
  • Comment on the intended audience
  • Compare and contrast the source to your other source
  • Comment on how this source works with your topic

General Format of an Annotation

Refer to the tabs on the left for specific guidelines for each citation style.

  • Follow the appropriate citation style
  • Add an annotation to the end of the entry
  • Indent between 0 to 1 inch (depending on citation style) to distinguish from the hanging indent of the source entry
  • Annotations describe or evaluate the source - follow the instructor's guidelines
  • If you do use more than one paragraph, do not skip a line between paragraphs

CNW:3633 Personal Writing - Bonner, Spring 2024: Annotated Bibliography

Annotated bibliography.

What is an Annotated Bibliography?

A bibliography, as you know, is a list of sources that you’ve used when researching your topic (vs works cited, which will include only the sources cited in the essay). An annotated bibliography includes a brief summary and evaluation of the usefulness of each source. Like the mind maps and outlines we used for the first essay, annotated bibliographies are a valuable way to organize your ideas for a research paper; they give you an overview of what has already been said and areas you could contribute.

Annotations are written in paragraph form. Each annotation should include the following information:

1. Medium (book, movie, article, etc.)

2. Purpose of the source (what did the creator of the source want you to take away?)

3. Summary of the key features or arguments in the source

4. Information on the author/creator and related credentials. Is it in a peer-reviewed journal? Is it a fan on YouTube? (Both of these are valuable, but would be used differently in your essay)

5. Failures or shortcomings of the source. Did it overlook something major?

6. The value of this source to your essay. How does it help you?

For the first assignment, you will create an annotated bibliography with 3 sources ; each annotation will be about one paragraph (150 words), so your final annotated bib will be about 450 words. These annotations will be in MLA format. You must include two web sources and one book.
