Describing the Weather in Spanish & Forecasting

The weather, “el clima”, is a very interesting topic to talk about. In our previous lesson we introduced different Spanish weather expressions and discussed several examples on how to use the verbs ESTAR, SER, HABER and others to talk about the weather. We created a lot of sentences before, but we haven’t actually developed on describing the weather in Spanish at a specific time or place, so we will put all the pieces together in this lesson to make it more communicative and will also teach you the basics to write a Spanish weather forecast or report. Comencemos…

Describing the weather in Spanish using SER, ESTAR and common phrases

Estar + weather conditions in spanish.

As we mentioned in the previous lesson, you can use several types of verbs and expressions for describing the weather in Spanish at given moment, some of which will be reviewed so that the descriptions provided make sense to you. First, we use both “El clima” and “El tiempo” to refer to the weather. The verb ESTAR is probably the easiest to talk about weather conditions as all we just need to say “El clima está + a weather condition or adjective in Spanish ”, being these weather conditions words such as “ soleado, nublado, frío, caliente, lluvioso ” and so on.

Using ESTAR to talk about the Weather in Spanish

Instead of “El clima” it is possible to use the expression “El día…” or even a season such as “El verano”. Tenses are really important too, especially when it comes to describing the weather in Spanish in the past tense or present tense ,not to mention the future tense for a Spanish weather forecast. Check the first example and try to analyze how ESTAR is used for weather descriptions.

Describing the weather in Spanish using ESTAR – Decribiendo el clima

Hoy el clima está muy agradable. Afuera está cálido y soleado, así que puedo salir a comprar algunas cosas y salir a caminar. La temperatura está a 32 grados celcius. No está tan caliente. Ha estado lloviendo en las ultimas semanas. Ayer llovió en la mañana, así que espero que hoy no llueva. Yo creo que el año pasado llovió más que este año.

SER + weather conditions in Spanish

Basically, ESTAR will be used to describe weather conditions that will change regularly, as this verb is normally used to represent states. However, we will use the verb SER  to talk about the normal weather in a town or any other place in a given season or time of the year , e.g. “El clima es agradable en esta ciudad” (the weather is nice in this city) or “El clima es muy helado en el invierno” (the weather is very cold in the winter).

It is also possible to explain why a specific weather event or condition is happening using “debido a”, “por” and “porque” as in “El clima es muy agradable la mayoría del tiempo, pero hoy está lloviendo mucho debido al huracán”. This last long sentence explains that the weather is nice most of the time, but it has been raining a lot (using ESTAR not SER) due to a huge storm (una tormenta gigante). Let’s see how both ESTAR and SER are used for describing the weather in Spanish.

Describing the weather in Spanish with SER and ESTAR – Decribiendo el clima

El tiempo es bastante agradable en los países tropicales. Algunas personas piensan que es muy caliente. En la estación seca el clima es bastante caliente en los meses de abril y mayo. Al comenzar la estación lluviosa, las temperaturas bajan un poco. La estación lluviosa es cálida también. A veces el cielo está nublado y a veces está lloviendo mucho debido a los huracanes y tormentas. Diciembre y enero son meses muy fríos.

Writing a weather forecast in Spanish – El pronóstico del clima

In order to make a Spanish weather forecast we must use the future tense. For forecasting, you will need verbs such as “caer” (to fall), “llover” (rain), “continuar” (continue), “ir” (to go), “subir” (go up) and “bajar”(go down), “mover” (to move). The easiest way to transform these verbs in the future tense is by adding either “-A” or “-AN” at the end of the verb, for example:

Making weather forecasts in Spanish with verbs in the future

Present : En este pueblo llueve todos los días (It rains every day in this town) Future : Lloverá todos los días. (It will rain every day)

Spanish weather forecasts also contain words such as “temperatura”, “lluvia”(rain), “nieve”(snow), “precipitaciones” (precipitation) and many other. Most of the time you will hear a combination of different tenses in order to compare the temperatures from previous days with new ones or to compare other weather conditions. Make sure to add tilde to the last vowel of the verbs in the future when they finish in vowels, e.g. “caerá” when you are writing a description or a weather forecast script. Let’s see all this in an example.

A Script for a Weather Forecast in Spanish  – El pronóstico del tiempo

Hoy tendremos un día muy bueno con temperaturas normales que van desde 30 grados en el norte del país hasta 34 en el sur. El cielo estará despejado y no lloverá, a diferencia de los días anteriores. El clima continuará soleado por un par de días más. El fin de semana comenzará a llover de nuevo debido a una tormenta tropical que se desplaza por el oceano Atlántico y llegará al país el viernes por la noche.

Uvalde families deserve the Texas House Committee report in Spanish. Here it is.

the report in spanish

Dear readers,

The Austin American-Statesman is publishing in Spanish the entire report from the special Texas House committee empaneled to investigate the tragic deaths of 19 children and their two teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.

We view this as a public service for the Uvalde families and the greater community, where most residents are Latino and many are more comfortable reading in Spanish. According to the most recent Census Bureau data, half of Uvalde County residents age 5 or older speak a language other than English at home.

En español: ¿Por qué decidimos traducir el informe de Uvalde al español?

A group of Spanish-language reporters and editors took special care to ensure the translation was culturally competent and sensitive to word usage by Mexican and Central American communities. A few words in the report do not readily translate to Spanish, however, such as "tomboy," which is a derogatory term in Spanish. We have kept those words in English in quotations.

We also are printing the report in Spanish and will be distributing copies in Uvalde and making them available free of charge.

Transparency and rigorous journalism that challenges the process are the only path to meaningful change. The Uvalde families deserve honest answers and what will be done to prevent another May 24 tragedy after a gunman walked into the school and opened fire inside two classrooms. Law enforcement officers took 73 minutes before they entered the room. Police said they killed the gunman.

The Uvalde families deserve to receive the report's information in Spanish, too.

The translation and editing is the result of a great collaboration of Spanish-speaking journalists from across the country, and in Mexico, by Teresa Frontado and Sonia Ramírez Chávez and overseen by reporter Romina Ruiz-Goiriena at USA Today.

Reported Speech Spanish Guide: Examples + Verb Changes

Coverage Image Reported Speech

Reported speech is an overlooked yet crucial feature in everyday conversations. In short, it allows you to convey what someone else said adequately. Since mastering this topic can boost your fluency, in this reported speech Spanish guide, you’ll learn:

  • How to form reported speech
  • Verb Changes in Indirect Speech
  • Downloadable PDF

In addition to this, I’ve also included different examples of how to apply this concept in real-life situations. Let’s do this!

What Is the Reported Speech in Spanish?

Reported speech in Spanish, also known as indirect speech, conveys what someone else said without quoting their exact words.

Graphic showing the difference between direct and indirect speech in Spanish

Simply put, Spanish indirect speech allows you to rephrase and report what someone said. On the contrary, direct speech involves quoting the exact words a person used. For instance:

In Spanish, decir is the most common verb to form the reported speech. However, you can also use the following verbs:

  • Aclarar : Clarify / Explain
  • Afirmar : Affirm / Clair
  • Anunciar : Announce
  • Contar : Tell
  • Explicar : Explain
  • Pedir : Ask
  • Preguntar : Ask
  • Prometer : Promise
  • Recordar : Remember
  • Recomendar : Recommend
  • Sugerir : Suggest

Spanish indirect speech allows you to share information and someone’s thoughts or opinions with different people. As a result, it’s commonly used in news and writing environments, but also in daily conversations.

How to form indirect speech

To report what someone said, we use one of the previous verbs followed by que:

[Verb] + que + [statement]

When using reported speech in Spanish you’re repeating what another person said, we must do some modifications to preserve the meaning of the original sentence. These changes include:

  • Adjust the pronouns and adjectives
  • Change the verb tense (if applicable)

Take this graphic as an example:

Graphic explaining how reported speech works in Spanish

Spanish Reported Speech: Verb Backshifting

When it comes to reported speech, verb conjugations are one of the major adjustments you must make. In simple words, we must change the tense of the original verb to maintain a logical sequence. In Spanish grammar , this is known as backshifting .

To help you understand and apply backshifting in reported speech, I’ve prepared this table that compares the original tenses with their backshifted equivalents:

We only change the tense of a verb when the original action already took place . Let me break this down for you.

Let’s say you’re traveling and you call me today to tell me when you arrive. You’ll say:

Llegaré a las dos.  I will arrive at two.

But the time comes, and you’re not here. Everybody is asking me what time you’re supposed to arrive and I repeat what you said:

Me dijo que llegaría a las 2.  He said he would arrive at 2.

In this case, I backshifted the verb because the original action (arrival time) had already passed. The same happens with other tenses.

However, the tense of the original statement doesn’t change when talking about facts or when the action is still relevant (it just happened).

Take this sentence as an example:

This example implies that I’m immediately telling you what our friend said.

Reported Speech: Additional Spanish Resources

Transforming from direct and indirect speech requires knowledge of diverse grammatical elements. For starters, you must have a good command of Spanish pronouns so you know which pronoun to use for your sentence.

On that same note, you should also get familiar with possessive adjectives in case you need to mention someone’s belongings. And, of course, you must be comfortable conjugating verbs in different Spanish tenses .

Make sure you know how to form the:

  • Present indicative
  • Present perfect
  • Present subjunctive
  • Preterite tense
  • Imperfect subjunctive
  • Past perfect
  • Imperative
  • Future simple
  • Conditional tense

HOUSTON (AP) — A woman in a trenchcoat opened fire with a long gun Sunday inside celebrity pastor Joel Osteen’s megachurch in Texas, sending worshippers rushing to find safety while two off-duty officers confronted and killed the shooter. Two other people were shot and injured, including a 5-year-old boy who was in critical condition.

The violence erupted shortly before the Houston church’s 2 p.m. Spanish service was set to begin, just as the rest of the country was preparing for the Super Bowl. The woman entered the enormous Lakewood Church – a building with a 16,000-person capacity that was previously an arena for the NBA’s Houston Rockets -- with the boy who was later hurt in the shootout with police. A man in his 50s was also wounded.

Details of the confrontation remain unclear in the hours after the tragedy, and police have not released the woman’s identity or a possible motive. It’s also unknown what relationship, if any, the woman had to the boy, and who actually shot him and the man.

“I will say this,” Houston Police Chief Troy Finner told reporters during a news conference outside the church. “That female, that suspect, put that baby in danger. I’m going to put that blame on her.”

The boy was in critical condition at a children’s hospital, while the man was stable at a different hospital with a hip wound.

The shooting happened between services at the megachurch that is regularly attended by 45,000 people every week, making it the third-largest megachurch in the U.S., according to the Hartford Institute for Religion Research. Osteen said the violence could have been much worse if it had happened during the earlier, larger 11 a.m. service.

Witnesses told reporters that they heard multiple gunshots. Christina Rodriguez, who was inside the church, told Houston television station KTRK that she “started screaming, ‘There’s a shooter, there’s a shooter,’ ”and then she and others ran to the backside of a library inside the building, then stood in a stairway before they were told it was safe to leave.

Longtime church member Alan Guity, whose family is from Honduras, said he was resting inside the church’s sanctuary before the Spanish service as his mother was working as an usher when he heard gunshots.

“Boom, boom, boom, boom and I yelled, ‘Mom,’ ” he told The Associated Press.

The 35-year-old ran to his mother and they both laid flat on the floor and prayed as the gunfire continued. They remained there for about five minutes until someone told them it was safe to evacuate. Outside, Guity said, he and his mother tried to calm people down by worshiping and singing in Spanish, “Move in me, move in me. Touch my mind and my heart. Move within me Holy Spirit.”

Despite the chaos, Finner said the tragedy “could have been a lot worse” if the two officers had not “engaged” the woman when she opened fire. They had been working security at the church on Sunday, and Finner praised them for their quick actions.

The officers work for the Houston Police Department and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, respectively. Both have been placed on protocol-mandated administrative duty.

After she was shot, the woman told police that she had a bomb, but authorities said no explosives were found when her vehicle and backpack were searched. First responders continued to search the megachurch for hours afterwards.

Osteen said Sunday that his congregation is “devastated.” He added that he would pray for the victims and for the woman who did the shooting and their families. It was not clear where he was at the time of the shooting.

“We’re going to stay strong and we’re going to continue to, to move forward,” he said during the news conference with police. “There are forces of evil, but the forces that are for us -- the forces of God -- are stronger than that. So we’re going to keep going strong and just, you know, doing what God’s called us to do: lift people up and give hope to the world.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statement saying “our hearts are with those impacted by today’s tragic shooting and the entire Lakewood Church community in Houston. Places of worship are sacred.”

The church has grown tremendously over the past 25 years since Joel Osteen took over after his father’s death in 1999 and introduced an upbeat style of Christian televangelism that has captured a following of millions. His televised sermons reach about 100 countries. The elder Osteen founded the church in a converted feed store in 1959.

Mourning a Transgender Activist at a Cathedral That Once Drew Protests

St. Patrick’s Cathedral was the site of protests over the church’s position on homosexuality and AIDS. On Thursday, it hosted a jubilant funeral for Cecilia Gentili, a former sex worker and actress.

Mourners wearing black suits and red roses carry a wooden coffin down the steps of St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Several have their mouths open as they shout. One wears a black cowboy hat.

By Liam Stack

The pews of St. Patrick’s Cathedral were packed on Thursday for an event with no likely precedent in Catholic history: the funeral of Cecilia Gentili, a transgender activist and actress, former sex worker and self-professed atheist whose memorial functioned as both a celebration of her life and an exuberant piece of political theater.

Over 1,000 mourners, several hundred of whom were transgender, arrived in daring outfits — glittery miniskirts and halter tops, fishnet stockings, sumptuous fur stoles and at least one boa sewed from what appeared to be $100 bills. Mass cards and a picture near the altar showed a haloed Ms. Gentili surrounded by the Spanish words for “transvestite,” “whore,” “blessed” and “mother” above the text of Psalm 23.

That St. Patrick’s Cathedral would host the funeral for a high-profile transgender activist, who was well known for her advocacy on behalf of sex workers, transgender people and people living with H.I.V., might come as a surprise to some.

Not much more than a generation ago, at the heights of the AIDS crisis, the cathedral was a flashpoint in conflicts between gay activists and the Catholic Church, whose opposition to homosexuality and condom use enraged the community. The towering neo-Gothic building became the site of headline-grabbing protests in which activists chained themselves to the pews and lay down in the aisles.

The church has softened its tone on those issues in recent years, and New York’s current cardinal, Timothy Dolan, has said the church should be more welcoming of gay people. Joseph Zwilling, a spokesman for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, did not respond to questions about whether the church had been aware of Ms. Gentili’s background when it agreed to host her funeral.

On Wednesday, he said that “if a request comes in for a funeral from a Catholic, the cathedral does its best to accommodate.”

New York City is home to roughly a dozen gay-friendly Catholic parishes , but St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the seat of the archdiocese, is not one of them.

Ceyenne Doroshow, who organized the funeral, said friends of Ms. Gentili — who died on Feb. 6 at 52 — had wanted the service to be at St. Patrick’s because “it is an icon, just like her.” But she added that she had not mentioned that Ms. Gentili was transgender when planning with the church. “I kind of kept it under wraps,” she said.

Ms. Gentili’s death came at a politically fraught time for transgender people, as states across the country restrict their access to health care and public accommodation. Religious groups have played an active role in those efforts, but at the same time Pope Francis has taken steps toward inclusivity, saying last year that transgender people can be baptized, serve as godparents and be witnesses at church weddings.

Mr. Zwilling said he did not know whether or not Ms. Gentili had attended Mass at the cathedral, or if any other transgender people had had their funerals there. But he said that “a funeral is one of the corporal works of mercy,” a part of Catholic teaching that the church has described as “a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise.”

The priest’s remarks did not address the specifics of Ms. Gentili’s life. As the service began, the priest, the Rev. Edward Dougherty, said it was the largest crowd he had seen since Easter Sunday. That comment drew the first of several rounds of cheers, chants and standing ovations.

At one point, a friend of Ms. Gentili’s took the lectern to pray for access to gender-affirming health care. At another, a mourner upstaged a priest singing “Ave Maria,” changing the lyrics to “Ave Cecilia.” She then danced through the aisles, red scarves twirling around her.

Later in the day, several people who attended a Mass at the cathedral said they were pleased it had hosted Ms. Gentili’s funeral.

Carlos Nunez, 43, who lives in Manhattan and works in customer service, said he thought the funeral was proper.

“Why not?” he said, leaving the cathedral. “Everybody has the right to come to church. Everybody is a child of God.”

Michael Minogue, 67, said he had reconsidered some of his own views after a friend died of AIDS in the 1980s. He said it struck him as benevolent — on the part of the church and mourners alike — that Ms. Gentili had her funeral in the cathedral.

“It signifies a bit more tolerance on both sides,” he said.

Ms. Gentili was an atheist, but her one-woman Off Broadway show, “ Red Ink ,” explored her encounters with the divine in unexpected places. In an interview last fall, she said she had “never had opportunities to experience a faith that was fully embracing of me” as a transgender person but had recently begun attending services again at various churches.

The Rev. James Martin, a well-known Jesuit writer who advocates a more inclusive approach from the church, said it was “wonderful” that St. Patrick’s had agreed to hold Ms. Gentili’s funeral.

“To celebrate the funeral Mass of a transgender woman at St. Patrick’s is a powerful reminder, during Lent, that L.G.B.T.Q. people are as much a part of the church as anyone else,” he said before the service. “I wonder if it would have happened a generation ago.”

At the time, the city’s AIDS crisis had plunged the church’s fraught relations with the city’s gay and transgender community to a new a low.

In the late ’80s, Cardinal John O’Connor, the leader of the archdiocese , barred a gay Catholic group from meeting at their longtime church and said AIDS was spread through “sexual aberrations or drug abuse.” He also said the advice to use condoms to stop the spread of the disease was based on “lies.”

In 1989, more than 4,000 people protested outside St. Patrick’s , and protesters chanted and chained themselves to the pews inside. The police arrested 111 people during the protest, which became a touchstone in the city’s gay history .

The organizers of Ms. Gentili’s funeral said they hoped it would go down as a similarly important moment for the community. And as pallbearers walked Ms. Gentili’s coffin back up the aisle at the end of the service, chants once again echoed through the nave of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

“Cecilia! Cecilia! Cecilia!”

Nate Schweber contributed reporting.

An earlier version of this article misidentified the psalm whose text appeared on mass cards under an image of a haloed Cecilia Gentili. It is Psalm 23, not Psalm 25.

Best Spanish Wines

Spanish winemaking dates back to the Roman era when wines were crudely fermented in terra cotta amphorae, but it when Benedictine monks from France began tending vines and making wine in the 12 th century the world began to notice quality wines from Spain. When visiting wineries in Rioja we are often shown award certificates from the late 18 th century proving that this family’s wines were highly rated at that time and for some time after. Fast forward through two world wars, the Spanish Civil War, and the dictatorial era of Franco when Spanish wines were not well regarded, to modern day Spain and its amazing wines made by world class oenologists. We truly feel we have entered a time when Spanish wines are forces to be reckoned with. Spain makes excellent offerings in all its 69 regions, but we’ve decided to concentrate on stunning Tempranillo-based wines from Ribera del Duero and Rioja . We luxuriated in the dozens of selections we tasted to narrow down to these seven sure-fire winners. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did—salud!

Bodegas Riojanas 1978 Monte Real Gran Reserva Rioja Spain

the report in spanish

An excellent bottle to gift for a birth year or anniversary, this 46-year-old wine tastes like it was bottled only yesterday. Bodegas Riojanas is one of the few wineries that keeps a cellar filled with exquisite library vintages and we were honored to take a tour on a recent trip to Rioja. This blend of Tempranillo, Mazuelo, and Garnacha has aromas of plums, mint tea, caramel, and a touch of saddle leather. There’s a delightful burst of fruit sweetness at first sip but it is balanced by excellent acidity and flavors of orange, apricot, plum, dark chocolate, and star anise. It’s drinking perfectly right now, but a few more years in your cellar would be fine as well.

Tempos Vega Sicilia 2012 Unico Tinto Ribera del Duero Spain

the report in spanish

Vega Sicilia is one of the premier and most well-known (if not the premier and best-known) wineries in all of Spain. It’s served at high-level state functions and although we weren’t there, we’re told that Unico was on offer at King Felipe’s wedding to Queen Letizia. Deep purple colored in the glass this stunning wine has aromas of butterscotch, milk chocolate, and black raspberry with flavors of Bing cherry, mocha, black plum, and dried herbes de Provence. The tannins are powerful and silky smooth and there’s a savory finish that goes on and on and on.

Arzuaga 2016 Gran Reserva Ribera del Duero Spain

the report in spanish

Arzuaga is one of our favorite wineries (we have many!) in Ribera del Duero. The Arzuaga family has been making excellent wines since the early 1990s and today, no trip to the winery is complete without a visit to their world class spa and lunch or dinner in the Michelin-starred restaurant. The 2016 Gran Reserva has aromas of black currant, dark plum, and black olive tapenade. It is soft on entry, but then voluptuous tannins build in strength and showcase flavors of English toffee, black currant, red cherry, toasted hazelnuts, and dried sage. There’s a touch of wet river rock and savory herbs in the long, long finish.

Vivaltus 2016 Ribera del Duero Spain

the report in spanish

The Yllera family recently built a state-of-the-art winery and brought in consultant Jean-Claude Berrouet, who is best known for crafting more than 40 vintages at Petrus in Bordeaux. He uses Tempranillo grapes (and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) from vines that are more than 80 years old and planted at altitudes of up to 3,200 feet; he also minimizes the use of new barrels for a softer oak effect. The 2016 is deep garnet—almost inky purple—with aromas of black cherry, cranberry, and bittersweet chocolate and flavors of pomegranate, dark chocolate, and saddle leather with just a touch of hickory wood smoke. It has great heft on the midpalate with pleasantly grippy tannins and a long, long finish. Drink now through 2036.

Pago de Carraovejas 2018 Cuesta de las Liebres Grandes Añadas Ribera del Duero Spain

the report in spanish

Pago de Carraovejas Cuesta de las Liebres Grandes Añadas is made, as the last two words of its name suggest, only in the finest years. (Grandes añadas is Spanish for “great vintages.”) The winery’s only 100 percent Tempranillo, this single-vineyard wine comes from a southwest-facing plot whose name means “slope of the hares” which receives sunlight late into the day. It is aged 24 months in new 225-liter extra fine grain French oak barrels and 24 months in bottle before release. The 2018 vintage is garnet colored with aromas of red and black raspberries, dark chocolate, anise seed, and wild brush. It has a nice sense of spice on the mid palate with flavors of black raspberry, black cherry, clove, fennel, and tangerine zest. Bold tannins are kept in check by lively acidity. Drink through 2040.

Sierra Cantabria 2019 Finca El Bosque Rioja Spain

the report in spanish

The Eguren family has been growing grapes since 1870 and is currently in their fifth generation of family ownership and winemaking. They manage a total of six wineries, each having a unique personality and producing wines with distinctly different flavor profiles. Finca El Bosque is one of our favorites produced by the current generation. It has aromas of cassis, black raspberry, and crushed violet petals that lead to flavors of caramel, black currant, and brown baking spices. The tannins are silky smooth and the finish goes on and on and on. Drink now through 2039.

Artadi 2018 La Poza de Ballesteros Alava Spain

the report in spanish

The Lacalle and Laorden families began Artadi in 1992 and today they own and manage 138 acres of vineyards located at the foot of the Sierra de Toloño mountains in the Sonsierra Alavesa region of Spain. Like many winemakers in the region, they focus on allowing each vine and each plot of land to express themselves in the wines they create. Grapes for this enticing wine are grown on a three-acre plot in Elvillar de Alava and the resulting wine has heady aromas of fennel bulb, mint leaves, black berry, and black currant that progress to flavors of cassis, anise, and eucalyptus all wrapped in a silky tannic sheath.
