‘365 Days’ author Blanka Lipinska responds to criticism about the steamy series

DSC03774.ARW

Before "365 Days" was the ultimate guilty pleasure movie trilogy on Netflix, and before it was a series of bestselling books in Poland translated in languages around the world, it was a fantasy that lived in Blanka Lipinska's head.

Speaking to TODAY, Lipinska is quick to admit that she identifies with Laura, the series' main character. "Laura is me," she said.

The third book in Lipinska’s series will be released in English in September, with an e-book version arriving on Aug. 9 in time for “The Next 365 Days,” the trilogy’s conclusion, dropping on Netflix on Aug. 19.

Like the character Laura in the popular series, which became an international sensation when it dropped on Netflix in 2020, Lipinska was stuck in a stale relationship. And like Laura, she went on life-changing vacation with that boyfriend and another couple to Sicily.

Laura met a man in Sicily; Lipinska met a story.

"365 Days: This Day" Netflix Launch Event In Warsaw

At the time of the trip nine years ago, Lipinska was disillusioned with work and feeling aimless. "I was in a black hole. I didn't see a future," she said. She remembers the moment when the story popped into her head — the clothes she was wearing, the weather, "It was the perfect antidepressant for me," she said.

Here's where Lipinska's fantasy kicks in. In the book, Laura ends up catching the eye of a Sicilian gangster who, believing her to be the woman from a vision he had long ago, kidnaps her. Don Massimo Torricelli then gives Laura “365 days” to fall in love with him, before he frees her.

As for how much Lipinska is in Laura, beyond the Sicilian vacation? Lipinska said much of the novels are based on real events in her and her friends' lives, but is reticent to identify which parts. "There's one part that I'm totally sure that 100 percent of people say is bulls---, and it's really not," she said.

Indeed, it's difficult to believe any of the plot is based on a person's life. The novels and movie adaptations are marked soap opera-worthy twists: Massimo has a twin brother! Laura is kidnapped by another gangster! And there's sex — lots of it, on various surfaces in all manner of locations (look up the "yacht scene").

"You have to know that in that moment in my life, I really needed sex — the books show how pathetic I was," Lipinska said, laughing.

Though the film and book series have been criticized for their premise, Lipinska sees them as an outlet for fantasies — one in conversation with other famous stories.

"There is a cartoon. This cartoon is 'Beauty and the Beast.' And this is the cartoon for children. My books and my movies, they're for adults, and they're not a cartoon. But I don't see a lot of difference between those two stories," she said, pointing out kidnapping and a gruff man.

"Why aren't they shouting about Beauty and the Beast, a cartoon for children? Probably I am who I am because a f---ing cartoon I saw when I'm 5," she said.

Four years after first book's publication in 2018, Lipinska has distance from the character she once wrote as her cipher.

“When I see Laura, I think, ‘Oh my f---ing gosh, she’s so stupid. And I was so stupid in that moment of my life. Right now, I’m proud of myself, that I’m not in that moment. I think right now I’m smart,” she said.

Michele Morrone and Anna-Maria Sieklucka.

By "smart," Lipinska said, she means she "makes better decisions about guys." She said, "Let's be honest, in my life, all my huge changes were because someone broke my heart and I'm totally sure that in your life was the same."

So it's more accurate to say that she was Laura, rather than is Laura.

Today, Lipinska is calling from her home in Poland, decked out with lush granite counters (she jokes she is the "princess of darkness"). She's so famous she can't buy toilet paper in her home country without the paparazzi. She wrote her way into a new reality.

And she can't say she's surprised by where she landed.

"I am a great seller," she said, laughing. She recalled the meeting with her publishing house. "I told them everything what’s happened right now, like I will publish my book in Poland; it will be the bestseller; then I will make a movie," she said.

"They looked at me like I was crazy. It shows how big power of affirmation when you believe in yourself and you believe in your plan. You know even sky’s the limit," she said.

As she predicted, Lipinska is very involved with her the movie adaptations. She remembered the search for Massimo, the alluring (and, some would say, unhinged) figure at the center of the films. Two weeks away from shooting, and they still hadn't found an actor.

Lipinska was struck by a headshot of Michele Morrone, an Italian actor without any major credits. After perusing his Instagram for more intel, she invited him out to lunch. At the end of the meal, Morrone asked Lipinska to look at him.

"He took off the glasses and he asked me, 'Are you lost baby girl?'" she said, echoing Massimo's lines in the movie. "I'm so lost. That's how I met. I was in love from the first second."

Michele Morrone as Don Massimo. I was in love from the first second," Lipinska said.

Massimo is the man of Lipinska’s fantasies turned into a reality. Not quite ready to say goodbye to her leading man, Lipinska also plans to revisit the story from Massimo’s point of view.

“This is the story from the beginning. But this time from the perspective of Massimo,” she said.

Now, Lipinska is thinking of how to use her past to fuel the next project — and this one is a revenge plot.

Lipinska was linked to Aleksander Milwiw-Baron, a Polish rock star, starting in February 2020. They split up, she said, due to the pressures of fame. "We were like power couple here in Poland, and this destroyed my relationship," she said.

Following this experience, Lipinska plans to keep her relationships private, but will still look to past ones for inspiration.

"Revenge is a b----. When you're a movie maker, or when you're a writer, you have a bigger opportunity for revenge. I just finished the script for my new movie, an erotic movie as well," she said.

The main character, she said, is a writer. Her boyfriend? A guitar player. "My ex-boyfriend, he's a little frustrated about it. A little scared. What to do?" Lipinska said, shrugging.

"It was fun for me to create something like that and go back to my memories — and then change them a little," she said. Certainly, it wouldn't be the first time.

  • Lipińska, formerly a makeup artist, has become one of Poland's highest-paid authors.
  • In February 2021, an English-language translation of Lipińska 365 Days officially hit shelves.

Until now, reading the book that inspired Netflix's 365 Days wasn't a possibility unless you were fluent in Polish, or willing to scour the Internet for an unofficial translation. The steamy movie is based on a series of Polish-language erotic novels by Blanka Lipińska , first published in 2018.

365 Days by Blanka Lipińska

As of February 2, 2021, Lipińska's first book is officially available to read in English through Atria's Emily Bestler books. The second installment, That Day , will come out in 2022, potentially at the same time as the movie sequel , which Lipińska is co-writing. And she confirms the sequel will be as steamy as the first film . "It will be a very hot movie," Lipińska tells OprahMag.com.

365 Days derives its title from the story's premise. While on vacation in Sicily, a Polish woman named Laura is kidnapped by Massimo, a mafia don convinced she is the love of his life. If Laura doesn't reciprocate the feeling within a year, she's free to go.

Reader, she stays—a decision that inspired outrage and think-pieces galore after 365 Days hit Netflix. The shockingly graphic movie was critiqued for its glorification of toxic masculinity, and for turning kidnapping into a kind of romantic fantasy.

Despite its 0% Rotten Tomatoes score , 365 Days was an undeniable hit among audiences: The movie reigned supreme on Netflix's Top 10 chart for two weeks, and inspired curiosity about Lipinska's original novels . For their BDSM-twinged sex scenes and their glowering billionaire romantic lead, Lipińska's novels are often referred to as Poland's 50 Shades of Grey.

Published in 2018 and 2019, the novels catapulted 35-year-old Lipińska from a makeup artist to one of her country's highest paid authors and a literal tabloid celebrity—something she has mixed feelings about. "When I started with the books, I thought I wanted to be celebrity. I thought it would be fun. No, it's not," Lipińska says. "The paparazzi are everywhere. I go to buy toilet paper and they take a photo. It's not a comfortable situation. I don't want to be a star. I want to be Mr. Nobody."

Thanks to the movie, Lipińska is on her way to becoming an international star. While checking into a hotel in 2020, people at the front desk identified her as "the girl who created 365 Days ." The remark is accurate in more ways than one: 365 Days is wrapped up in Lipińska's life.

According to Lipińska, the 365 Days trilogy was born out of personal frustration. About eight years ago, Lipińska found herself trapped in a relationship much like Laura's in the novel, adding that Laura's boyfriend Martin looks "exactly the same" as her ex. "They even have the same clothes," she says. While they were compatible in terms of personality, Lipińska was sexually frustrated. "He was perfect for me with everything. But not with the sex," Lipińska says. "It was a hard situation, especially when you love someone so much."

The character of Massimo—all of his overpowering energy—spoke to what Lipińska craved at that point in her life. "In that moment, when I wrote the book, I really needed someone who would take all responsibility from me. I was in a moment in my life where I didn't see a way out. Only a big black hole. I'm a tough woman. A businesswoman. I was tired of deciding. All the time I had to decide about something—life, work, money. I thought, It would be so nice to have a strong guy who would tell me what to do ," Lipińska says.

Martin is not the only autobiographical element in 365 Days . Lipińska claims "85% of the story is real." While Lipińska won't clarify exactly which elements of the story were based on her life, she confirms she was indeed kidnapped by a lover—but that it was "easier" than Laura's experience in the book, and "quite exciting."

t

Given the overlap between truth and fiction, Lipińska found shooting the movie in Sicily to be occasionally overwhelming. "There were moments on set of the movie where I had to go to a dark room and chill for a little. It was too emotional. I remembered all of it from my real life. It was really weird sometimes, but wonderful. This was the biggest adventure of my life," she says.

Lipińska emphasizes that her controversial books are meant to be entertainment, not a guide to life. She compares her books to Thomas Harris's popular Hannibal Lecter book series, which inspired the Oscar Award-winning movie The Silence of the Lamb s . "Hannibal Lecter eats people. Nobody says, If people watch the movie, they'll start to eat people . No. It's only a movie. It's only entertainment," she says. " 365 Days is the same story as Beauty and the Beast , let's be honest, but nobody gets upset about that because it's a cartoon."

Still, she urges readers not to judge her books from 365 Days alone, but rather to read the entire trilogy first. When viewed as a whole, she considers her books to be a feminist cautionary tale. "I want to tell women to be focused and use their brains. Their independence is the most important thing in the world," she says.

Thanks to her books, Lipińska has achieved exactly what she hopes her readers achieve: Independence. "I have my dream life because I can give the people I love all they want," she says.

Despite her success, don't count on more novels from the author, who describes herself as a "businesswoman," not a writer. "I wrote only one story, and now it's finished," she says. she says. While she start a novel that revisits 365 Days through Massimo's perspective, she abandoned the project three years ago. "I said many times that I wish I never have to write anything again. If I don't write anything, it means I'm happy."

How Does ‘365 dni’ on Netflix Compare to the Book?

365 dni

Where to Stream:

Netflix Basic

Even though it just premiered on Netflix 365 dni has already made a splash. The romantic thriller has found its place on Netflix’s list of its top 10 shows and movies in the United States, and fans have been looking for more about this steamy story. And lucky for them, there’s more 365 dni (a.k.a. 365 Days ) out there.

Wondering about the 365 dni book and how it’s connected to the movie? We have you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about the 365 dni novel series, from how you can read it to how it compares to Netflix’s latest adaptation.

Is 365 dni Based on a Book?

It certainly is. 365 dni was originally written by the Polish author Blanka Lipinska. 365 dni , translated as 365 Days , is the first book in Lipinska’s trilogy about sex and Stockholm syndrome. It’s followed by the novels Ten dzień and Kolejne 365 dni , which translate to This Day and Another 365 Days respectively.

If you don’t know how to read Polish, unfortunately you won’t be able to read the official version of 365 dni anytime soon. But that hasn’t stopped fans from trying to bring English-speakers erotic literature. Right now Wattpad , the user-generated publishing app, is filled with unofficial English language translations of Lipinska’s first novel.

What Is the 365 dni Book About?

Though you may not be able to read it right now you can take comfort in the fact that the Netflix original follows the same beats as the novel series. 365 dni centers around 29-year-old Laura. While on vacation with her boyfriend in Sicily, Laura is kidnapped. That kidnapper turns out to be none other than the young and handsome head of the Sicilian mafia family, Don Massimo Toricelli.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Ashes’ on Netflix, a Turkish Erotic Thriller That Arrives Just In Time For Valentine's Day

The 14 steamiest movies to stream this valentine's day 2024, sexy movies on netflix, from 'x' to 'magic mike’s last dance', 'burning betrayal's pornographic sex scenes make it netflix's steamiest erotic thriller since '365 days'.

But this horror story becomes creepily romantic after Massimo has a near death experience. Laura is the only one he can think about while he’s on his deathbed. After his recovery, Massimo only has one goal for his new lease on life: to make Laura fall in love with him. And he gives her 365 days to do just that. Packed with steamy sex scenes and complicated, near abusive relationships, there’s a reason why this book series has been casually called the Polish 50 Shades of Grey.

How Does 365 dni on Netflix Compare to the Books?

Full transparency, no one at Decider has read 365 dni . In fact, no one at Decider can even read Polish (with the exception of Editor-in-chief Mark Graham who can read menus in delicious Polish restaurants). But it seems as if Netflix’s take on the first book stays mostly true to the original story. Though some fans have claimed that the book is better, at least one has maintained that the Netflix movie is on par with the quality of the novels. Take that as you will.

What Happens in the 365 dni Sequel?

Short version? After the cliffhanger ending of 365 dni , there’s more sex, more mafias, and then some more sex. Here’s an explanation on how the book and the movie end, as well as your guide as to what happens next in this book series.

Some reviewers also pointed out that the movie fails to address the themes of power and control that are present in the novel.

What is 365 Days Book Series About?

Dhruv Sharma of What is 365 Days Book Series About?

Brimming with over-the-top sex scenes and a somewhat scintillating romantic plot, ‘365 Days’ has gained quite some popularity since its release on Netflix. With just one look at the film’s premise, you’ll be able to tell that its primary audience will be divided into two groups: One will obviously judge it based on its seemingly poor execution while the other will strike it off as another guilty pleasure milestone. Well, regardless of how you choose to see it, if you enjoyed the movie, you should certainly check out its original novel of the same name which has been written by Blanka Lipińska.

On that note, rumor has it that since the first ‘365 Days’ film is a very loyal adaptation of Blanka Lipińska’s first novel, even its sequel will closely adapt the plot points that the writer covers in the second novel of the ‘365 Dni’ trilogy. So if you’re looking for a brief summary of the second book, which will possibly be the storyline of the sequel movie, we have you covered in the section below.

Whats 365 Days Book 2 About?

Rumor has it that since the first ‘ 365 Days ‘ film is a very loyal adaptation of Blanka Lipińska’s novel, even its sequel will closely adapt the plot points that the writer covers in the second novel of the ‘365 Dni’ trilogy. Titled ‘Ten dzień’ (that you can read here ), the second novel shows how Laura has finally fallen in love with Massimo, and for once, her life is straight out of a fairy tale. She’s about to get married to a man who truly loves her, takes care of her, and makes sure that she gets everything she wants. Apart from that, even her lavish surrounding has a charm of its own and she has everything from expensive cars to designer clothing.

What further adds to her happiness in the second book is the fact that she gets pregnant. With so much going on, Laura is happier than ever and can’t help but be very ecstatic about the future with the man of her dreams. Unfortunately for the couple, even in their moments of utter happiness, there seems to be a sense of fear lurking in the air as Massimo still has way too many enemies in the criminal world. One of Massimo’s enemies is determined to abduct Laura and even kill her just to seek revenge for Massimo’s wrongdoings. Her life, which was once all sunshine and rainbows, soon takes a darker turn as she begins to learn that being the wife of one of the most villainous people of Sicily will not be as easy as she had initially imagined.

If you’ve watched the movie, you’ll be able to recall that it ends with a major cliffhanger where a death flag looms over Laura. One of Massimo’s nemesis tries to kill her in the closing scene, but from what we know about the second book, it seems very likely that she’ll get away unscathed this time. However, the fear of this killer will still stay with the couple and it’ll come down to Massimo to either give up on his life as a mafia completely or find another way to save the only person he truly loves.

Is Netflix's 365 Days Based On A True Story?

Michele Morrone attending an event

It's no secret that "365 Days" caused some major backlash when it first dropped on Netflix. The film starts with a semi-normal premise and quickly dives off the deep end, launching the viewer full force into a romantic drama that features a forced relationship, elaborate shopping trips, and dubious consent. "365 Days" is a Polish film that's essentially a cross between "Fifty Shades of Grey" and "Beauty and the Beast," although some viewers might say that the steamy sex scenes and controlling nature of Ana and Christian's relationship in the "Fifty Shades" series is nothing compared to Massimo (Michele Morrone) and Laura's ( Anna-Maria Sieklucka ) frenetic affair.

Based on a novel by Blanka Lipińska, "365 Days" comes across like a fantasy run wild — so wild, in fact, that it's arguably lost all sense of reason or morality. To say that the story seems entirely fictional would be an understatement. Typically kidnapping is cause for alarm, but the film glosses over it with nary a second thought. However, sometimes even the most outrageous story finds its origins in truth. Is it possible that this movie was inspired by true events?

According to the author, the novel is based on real events

Apparently, "365 Days" is partially based on true events. Author Blanka Lipińska claims that "85% of the story is real," although she won't reveal which portions of the tale are fact and which are fiction. The author further explained that the story aligns so much with her own life that shooting the movie was occasionally overwhelming for her.

"There were moments on set of the movie where I had to go to a dark room and chill for a little. It was too emotional. I remembered all of it from my real life. It was really weird sometimes, but wonderful," Lipińska told Oprah Daily .

While "365 Days" is certainly erotic, it's not a romantic tale. Although Massimo claims he won't touch Laura without her permission, he frequently gropes, chokes, and grabs her without her consent. While the pair's sexual frustration eventually comes to a head, the unsettling nature of their relationship is never discussed. It's frankly alarming that any portion of the plot is based on true events, but viewers loved the movie so much that there's going to be two more installments. As reported by Deadline , Netflix will be producing the next two films in the franchise, based on the subsequent books in Lipińska's series. The ending of "365 Days" included a nail-biting cliffhanger, so it makes sense that Massimo and Laura's story isn't over quite yet — the next part is currently slated to arrive later in 2022 .

The Next 365 Days book is wildly different to the Netflix movie

The whole story was changed... for the better.

preview for The Next 365 Days Official Trailer

Usually when you've read a book series, you can roughly know what to expect from the movie adaptations. There might be slight changes and maybe modern updates if it's an old book, but generally, the plot and destination remain the same.

The trilogy is based on the book series by Blanka Lipińska , but it's now clear to see why the official announcement at the start of production on the second and third movies said that they were "loosely based" on the books.

365 Days: This Day had already made a major change to the book series with the character of Nacho , yet it still ended the same: with Laura fighting for her life after being shot by Massimo's ex Anna.

We were expecting similar notable changes in The Next 365 Days on its way to the same ending to the book. However, the movie ended up doing something totally different to the book it's based on, which is an altogether wilder ride.

( Spoilers ahead for both the book and the movie of The Next 365 Days .)

simone susinna , the next 365 days

The Next 365 Days book changes

While the book and the movie do start in a similar fashion (with Laura having survived being shot), there is already a significant difference.

In the book series, Laura was pregnant when she was shot, but in the movies, she was pregnant when she was involved in the crash at the end of the first movie. Either way, the result is the same as Laura ends up losing her baby as a result of the traumatic event.

Even with this change, the movie could have adapted the book more closer if it chose to, but we should be grateful it didn't. The loss of the baby leads to Laura becoming an alcoholic and Massimo becoming a drug and sex addict. Their relationship is strained (as it is in the movie), but things get much darker in the book.

(Oh, also, Laura only survives her injuries in the book after Nacho procures her a heart for a transplant. Where did he get it? Nobody knows.)

michele morrone, annamaria sieklucka, the next 365 days

Unlike in the movie, Laura is full-on obsessed with Nacho in the book and ends up living with him as Massimo sleeps around. While living with Nacho, she receives a package which is her dead dog (Massimo bought her a dog as a gift) in a box. At Olga's wedding, Massimo tells Laura that Nacho killed her dog.

Laura, the fool, believes him and breaks up with Nacho, before going back home to Massimo. She's held against her will by Massimo (again) after she discovers he was the one who killed the dog. Massimo drugs Laura and tries to get her pregnant, so she threatens to kill herself.

In an attempt to escape, Laura plans to seduce Massimo and escape when he lets his guard down as a result. Laura eventually gets away with Nacho, they get engaged and in an epilogue, it's revealed that they have a daughter together. Massimo has given up on Laura and divorced her, letting her keep the company too.

It's a happy ending of sorts, but there's a lot of icky dark stuff that has to happen along the way. By comparison, the movie is a breeze as none of this happens and it ends on a more ambiguous note , leaving us wondering if Laura will choose Massimo or Nacho.

We've only skimmed the surface of what happens in the book, so if you want to read the whole wild details, check out this review by Good Books user Just Another Perfectionist .

annamaria sieklucka, the next 365 days

Author Blanka Lipińska co-wrote all three movies in the trilogy adaptation of her own novels, so the changes aren't somebody going rogue. The third book received a backlash from fans, meaning it's possible Lipińska saw the movies as a chance for redemption.

There hasn't yet been a fourth 365 Days book, but that's not a surprise as the trilogy comes to a definitive end. Given the changes in the third movie, it has a more open-ended finale that suggests we're not done with this story yet.

It remains to be seen if The Next 365 Days movie is better received by fans than the book, but if it is, don't rule out a fourth movie .

The Next 365 Days is out now on Netflix.
