Report writing on robbery

Are you looking for a Report writing format for a Daylight burglary that took place in your city?

Example-1 (Report writing on Robbery in a House)

Robbers intrude in broad daylight.

Bhubaneswar,  July 5 :  Four robbers armed with knives and loaded guns trespassed a house in Shaheed Nagar, Bhubaneswar on Monday morning at around 8 AM. The intruders violently beat up an old couple,  tied their hands and legs, sealed their mouths, and threatened them to bring out all the cash, gold, and precious things they possess.

They forcefully seized cash and jewellery worth Rs. 20 lakhs, stated the victims. Mr . Arun Sharma and his wife Deepa Sharma are deeply shattered by this incident. They are currently, admitted to Capital hospital. Mr Sharma has got a severe hand injury.

The couple has registered an FIR in the local Police station. The Police are actively investigating the case right now. ” The face of one of the robbers has been captured on a CCTV camera in a nearby house .” Reported the officer in charge.

Example-2 (Report writing on Robbery in a Jewellery Store)

  state capital under ‘heist’  scare.

Agartala, July 7 2022: On the afternoon of July 6 2022, the city stood shocked and in absolute fright upon witnessing a robbery at the Prestigious Jewellery and lifestyle store “HeeraLaal Diamonds”. The outrageous part being, the  Gritty Heist was carried out on Broad daylight, that too at the wee hours of the office goers.

Going by the CCTV footages of the Bank, on opposite of the Jewellery store, the Thieves robbed the Store at around 11:10 am, the busiest hour of the day with respect to the office goers and the hustle on the street. The owners presumably got looted of Diamonds worth 3 crores.

All the three men, dressed in a Black t-shirt and mask covering their faces had pistols helping their condemned cause. Upon looting the show and destroying the CCTV data of the cameras in the store, the Thieves escaped from the scene, driving their way out on a “red Maruti 800″ parked just outside the crime scene.

The heist seemed to send a fright wave across the city. The City Police Chief has himself initiated a probe to be foreseen under his own supervision. More details awaited.

How to Investigate a Burglary

My friend used investigating burglaries as his template for training new detectives. Since his clearance rate was always above the national average, his training model likely has merit. With that in mind, here are some points to remember.

Amaury Murgado Headshot

My friend Jeff Barnes spent the bulk of his career in criminal investigations. He told me that he used investigating burglaries as his template for training new detectives. He felt that everything needed to solve and prosecute a burglary case could be applied to any investigation. Since Jeff's clearance rate was always above the national average, I'd say his training model has merit. With that in mind, let's take a look at some points to remember.

First, you need to establish if you're investigating a burglary (or other crime) in progress, or if the incident has ended. (Photo: StockPhoto.com)

In Progress Vs. Over-With

As with any call for service, there is a big difference between an in-progress call and one that is over with. The biggest concerns for an in-progress call revolve around victim and officer safety, securing the crime scene, and obviously doing everything possible to catch the suspect.

You have to document everything that leads up to the start of your investigation. How you received the call and what happens prior to the dust settling can make or break your investigation. One of your first goals is to establish the true nature of the call. If you find out it's no longer a felony in progress, then you can downgrade or cancel other responding units. If you confirm it's still a go, then you must document all the tactics you use in trying to capture the suspect, such as forming a perimeter and deploying K-9 teams.

There are a host of other considerations that include things like addressing any victim injuries, clearing the structure to make sure the suspect is not hiding inside, and finding any witnesses including any surveillance video. In other words, you must document everything involved.

If the call is over with, your sense of urgency is somewhat scaled down. The emergency factor is taken away and you can get right to the investigation part. But you still have to document who reported the call and the circumstances behind it. Someone coming home from a two-week vacation and finding out their front door was kicked in has a different set of details than a pawn shop that had its alarm cut off and rear wall breached. An investigation is all about the details.

Securing the Scene

Securing the scene is one of the most important considerations you have; it's where the bulk of your evidence lies. A mistake here can cost you the case. Not too long ago, I was made aware of an agency that mishandled a gun during a homicide investigation. After having his day in court, the suspect walked. That scenario could have easily been avoided if all those that were involved had understood that every part of an investigation is important. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Securing the scene sets you up for things like processing the scene, interviewing witnesses, and keeping contamination out, including people. If you can't avoid unwanted guests, make sure you document who goes in and out by keeping a crime scene log. You'd be surprised at the number of rank and file I have kept out of my scenes by doing so. Gawkers know that being placed on that list puts them in line for a possible subpoena and a court appearance later on.

The level of training, equipment carried, and time required to process a scene should help determine who gets to do the honors. Any officer can accomplish a great deal with a basic finger print kit and a digital camera. However, there is a point at which it's better to call your crime scene technician to take over and let the officer go back to handling calls.

Speaking With Victims/Witnesses

After the scene is secured, you need to identify all your witnesses. If possible, keep witnesses from talking to each other, as this is not a group project. Once you get them talking, follow up their oral statements by taking a written sworn statement from each. You want them telling their story in their own words. You must also stress that the statement must be legible. It doesn't do anyone any good if it can't be read.

Be careful not to coach them through their statement, as this could come back to bite you in court. Instead of coaching, limit your involvement to bringing to their attention any information that was left out from their original oral statement or to any specific information required by your agency. For example, some agencies use a checkmark format for demonstrating a victim's desire to prosecute while others require that victims write this in their statement.

Also, remember to check for any electronic witnesses. In today's world of smartphones, surveillance cameras, and live network security feeds, there is bound to be something you can use, even if just to provide a time frame for the crime.

You need to document an area canvass as well. For example, a good rule of thumb for a residential burglary is to check with the neighbors in front, in back, and to the sides of the victim's home. Interview the residents for anything that might help. A dog barking at 03:00 may signify the suspect leaving the scene.

Gathering Evidence

Gathering evidence is another critical point. It's not just what you see but what you might find that helps the most. Look at the scene from the suspects' point of view. What did they have to do to commit the crime? Then work from there. For example, many officers often miss fingerprints from a hotel burglary. They forget to dust at the window next to the door. It's been my experience that suspects usually place their hands there while trying to see out the window before they leave. Another thing officers sometimes forget is to check around the perimeter of the crime scene. Suspects have been known to drop things or place objects in dumpsters. You never know what you will find until you look.

Writing a Thorough Report

Every police academy recruit learns how to write a report. They learn about the journalistic approach of answering who, what, when, where, why, and how. They learn to write not only what they do but why they don't do something as well (IE: the vehicle wasn't processed because of rain). They also learn that where their report stops, someone else's starts.

The problem we encounter is a disconnect between what you learn at the academy, what your field training officers show you, and what your first line supervisor accepts. If a conversation ever starts with "That was the academy and this is the real world," you know your report writing standards are about to go south. My recommendation is don't ignore what you learned at the academy and write a thorough report anyway. I also suggest you spend some time with your detectives working a case. Learn from them what they need and what they are looking for from your initial investigation.

Final Words

The principles involved in investigating a burglary are the same ones involved in investigating anything from a retail theft to a homicide. Nailing down how to handle burglaries will help you with all of your investigations.

Crime Reporting: How to Write about Criminal Activities

gun, bullets, crime

Because crime reporting is always a hot topic, a spotlight appears on each story in the media regarding how much detail and publicity the crime stories should receive.

The answer to this question lies in the news reporter’s ability to construct the crime news in an appealing manner so viewers won’t find the story dull or offensive. Continue reading to learn how a crime news writer should structure the story, what should be withheld, and other advice to help you create a newsworthy story.

*If you need an editor to review your novel, check out my SERVICES page for more details.

Writing styles for crime reporting, go light on the jargon.

Tempted as you might be when reporting crime, you should stay away from any unnecessary jargon you think would fit nicely into the article.

It has become all too common for TV shows and cop movies to deliver police lingo. It sounds cool when they say it because it is in a movie. When you try to incorporate it into your news article it will sound lame. Don’t try too hard. You’re not writing a Hollywood screenplay. You are writing a quick, easy-to-read news brief that tells the reader about a recent crime.

If you absolutely must use cop slang in your crime reporting, then keep it with actual dialogue from the police themselves. If they say it as a quote, then OK. Otherwise, lose it.

Correctly Wording the Crime

This is important because it could weave into libel . You don’t want that at all. Click here for my libel post.

Although many people begin to judge anyone suspected of a crime before the trial even begins, they are ultimately innocent until proven guilty (in America). Thank God for that, otherwise, there would be total anarchy in the streets.

Nevertheless, society will judge.

It is up to you, the trustworthy crime reporter who pulls no punches and never allows a suspected person to look guilty on your watch, to maintain integrity and respect to your media firm.

And how exactly can you do this?

Easy. Just use the correct word. It might take some practice. But just use that critical thinking skill you have and you should be fine.

Always remember to keep the person involved in the crime and the situation separate at all times. It is perfectly acceptable to state that a murder was committed yesterday. Robert Doe is being held at the local precinct. However, until Robert Doe is legally convicted in a court of law, you cannot state that Robert Doe committed a murder.

And try not to state that someone was arrested for murder . It is not clear enough and there are more variables that need explaining. Instead, write that someone was arrested and charged with murder. It is a simple addition to the sentence, but it keeps it neutral.

Structure of the Story

This depends on the writer, but most crime reporting uses an inverted pyramid style. Click here to read my post about inverted pyramids.

If the crime you are writing about is necessary for breaking news then I suggest you write is as an inverted pyramid style. Having all the mandatory 5 Ws in the first few sentences will work nicely.

However, if you are reporting about a crime that is somewhat “known” already then all bets are off. Write it in a chronological manner, telling of the crimes’ dramatic moments, all those involved, and how the case is either pending or has been closed. Many times, readers enjoy these chronologically ordered crime reports because it gives them a better sense of detail and time.

And always try to end with a “kicker” (a quote from a witness or a relevant detail of the story). Remember that readers enjoy a great tale. And just because the crime reporting is about a factual situation, it doesn’t outlaw a possibility that a more “feature-type” approach can be allowed. Always ask your editor for permission and suggestions when doing it this way.

Repressing Details from Crime Reports

Identify properly.

A crime reporter needs to use complete names—all the time—especially with suspects not yet convicted.

Using middle names and suffixes is highly suggested when reporting in print. Just a slight error could result in it a retraction or a defamation lawsuit. Knowing a suffix or middle initial and NOT using it could be catastrophic for those not involved. It could label the wrong person.

Is Marking Someone a Suspect Justifiable?

Labeling a person of inquiry a suspect is not suggested. Although the term “suspect” gets thrown around all too often, it shouldn’t. A crime reporter might find that the police are investigating a “suspect” or “person of interest” in connection with a crime. That’s fine. But some reporters will take that name and run with it. That “suspect” might never get arrested for the crime at all. But an irresponsible crime reporter might announce the name anyway. Always wait for the official arrest by the police to finally label someone a “suspect.”

Careful with the Labeling

Tread carefully when reporting about a person’s race, religion, or sexual identity. Reporting on such issues could become problematic for a crime reporter. Only when those factors play into the actual crime should you use those details.

If the police cannot locate a person of interest and those factors are important to their discovery, then release those details.

Laws already in place at the state and federal levels forbid reporters from using the names of victims of a horrendous crime, such as rape or the similar. Protecting the identities of victims in those types of sensitive cases is paramount due to the backlash and potential harm they might receive.

With 18 being the age that a child is considered a legally responsible adult, any crimes committed by that person before 18 is kept secret by the courts. Juvenile courts reprimanding youths are never announced or held public as to not demonize minors.

An exception to this rule is if the crime committed is so outrageous that the minor is tried in court as an adult.

Include These in Your Crime Report

If you cover a crime scene that deals with a murder or aggravated assault, make sure you have included , and checked off, these points:

All names directly involved

  • This is a no-brainer, but it must be said.
  • Know their full names, ages, addresses, and any other information that might be helpful later on.
  • Get names of anyone arrested for the crime.
  • Have any charges been filed?

The Situation

  • Does anyone know how the crime may have happened?
  • Was there a weapon used?
  • Were there any similar scenarios previous to this one?
  • Get the exact address.
  • But also take notes of landmarks, houses, woodlands, swamps, and any suspicious-looking places.
  • Ask witnesses if they knew exactly when the crime took place.
  • Don’t just ask for general time. Get specifics— down to the minute.

Cause of death/Injuries

  • If the victim was stabbed, how many stab wounds were there?
  • If the victim was shot but survived, where did the bullet enter?
  • And if the victim was beaten, are there any broken bones?
  • What did the suspect look like?
  • If a suspect was not witnessed at the scene, did the victim have any problems with other people?

Quotes and comments

  • Talk with the police on the scene.
  • Interview friends, family, and neighbors.

More Advice for Crime Reporting

  • A good crime reporter will get to know the police. The information they can provide you is invaluable . Make friends with those at the courthouses and city hall, as well. Clerks and other assistants can help your investigations in a timely manner by getting copies of any documents needed.
  • Keep learning by scheduling a ride-along with cops, take courses in police procedures, ask detectives for any literature that can help.
  • Speak with victims and families. Ask deep questions about the crime, about how they handle their problems after the crime. Take detailed notes about the victim’s emotions (facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, etc.) and incorporate these descriptions into the crime report.
  • Always carry the proper gear: cellphone, pad, pen, audio recorder, DSLR camera, batteries, flashlight, bottled water, and protein snacks.

Be the Crime Reporter who Breaks the Case

I hope my advice helps.

Crime reporting is one of the more dangerous/risky fields a media reporter can enter. They have their work cut out for them. But, they say no other assignment compares to the rush crime reporting allows a journalist.

Just remember:

  • Be prepared with your gear.
  • Make networking with the police a priority.
  • Structure the crime report with style.
  • Be cautious when including certain information.

Burglary—Breaking or Entering

  • Forcible Entry
  • Unlawful Entry—No Force
  • Attempted Forcible Entry

Definition : The unlawful entry of a structure to commit a felony or a theft.

The UCR Program classifies offenses locally known as burglary (any degree), unlawful entry with intent to commit a larceny or felony, breaking and entering with intent to commit a larceny, house-breaking, safecracking, and all attempts at these offenses as burglary.

The UCR Program's definition of a structure includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Condominium
  • Dwelling house
  • House trailer or houseboat (used as permanent dwelling)
  • Other building
  • Outbuilding
  • Public building
  • Railroad car
  • Storage facility
  • Vessel (ship)

Additionally, any house trailer or other mobile unit that is permanently fixed as an office, residence, or storehouse is considered a structure. Tents, tent trailers, motor homes, house trailers, or other mobile units that are being used for recreational purposes are not considered structures. The UCR Program does not consider a telephone booth a structure.

Burglaries of hotels, motels, lodging houses, or other places where lodging of transients is the main purpose can present reporting problems to law enforcement. If a number of units under a single manager are burglarized and the offenses are most likely to be reported to the police by the manager rather than the individual tenants, the burglary must be reported as a single offense. Examples are burglaries of a number of rental hotel rooms, rooms in flop houses, rooms in youth hostels, and units in a motel. If the individual living areas in a building are rented or leased to the occupants for a period of time that would preclude the tenancy from being classified as transient, then the burglaries would most likely be reported separately by the occupants. Such burglaries must be reported as separate offenses. Examples of this latter type of multiple burglary would be the burglaries of a number of apartments in an apartment house, of the offices of a number of commercial firms in a business building, of the offices of separate professionals within one building, or of a number of rooms in a college dormitory.

Thefts from automobiles, whether locked or not; shoplifting from commercial establishments; and thefts from telephone booths, coin boxes, or coin-operated machines are all classified as larceny-theft offenses. If the area entered was one of open access, thefts from the area would not involve an unlawful trespass and would be classified as larceny-theft. A forcible entry or unlawful entry in which no theft or felony occurs but acts of vandalism, malicious mischief, etc. are committed is not classified as a burglary provided investigation clearly established that the unlawful entry was for a purpose other than to commit a felony or theft. (For information about vandalism as a Part II offense, see page 141.) Of course, if the offender unlawfully entered the structure, a multiple offense exists and the agency must classify the offense as a burglary.

Larceny-theft is an element of burglary and, therefore, must not be reported as a separate offense if associated with the unlawful entry of a structure. If a forcible or unlawful entry of a building is made to steal a motor vehicle, the reporting agency must count the offense and the value of the vehicle under burglary, not motor vehicle theft.

When a question arises as to whether a type of structure comes within the scope of the burglary definition, the law enforcement officer must look to the nature of the crime and be guided by the examples set forth. If a question remains, the agency should contact its state UCR Program. Direct contributors should contact the national Uniform Crime Reporting Program, Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1000 Custer Hollow Road, Clarksburg, WV 26306; telephone (888) UCR-NIBR/(888) 827-6427.

NOTE : It is important to remember that offenses must be classified according to UCR definitions and not according to state or local codes. Some states might, for instance, categorize a shoplifting or a theft from an automobile as burglary. These offenses are not classified as burglaries in UCR and must be reported to the national Program as larceny-thefts.

Burglary—Forcible Entry

Law enforcement must classify as Burglary—Forcible Entry (5a) all offenses where force of any kind is used to unlawfully enter a structure for the purpose of committing a theft or felony. This definition applies when a thief gains entry by using tools; breaking windows; forcing windows, doors, transoms, or ventilators; cutting screens, walls, or roofs; and where known, using master keys, picks, unauthorized keys, celluloid, a mechanical contrivance of any kind (e.g., a passkey or skeleton key), or other devices that leave no outward mark but are used to force a lock. Agencies must also include in this category burglary by concealment inside a building followed by exiting the structure.

The following scenarios illustrate incidents known to law enforcement that reporting agencies must classify as Burglary—Forcible Entry (5a):

  • A liquor store was broken into on a holiday when the store was closed. The next day, the manager found alcoholic beverages and money were missing and called the police.
  • A burglar used a key to enter four units in a condominium complex and stole numerous articles from each residence. The resident in each condominium called the police. The police made no arrest.
  • A man hid in a theater. After it closed, he stole money from the cash register and left the premises during the night. The police made no arrest.

Burglary—Unlawful Entry—No Force

The entry of a structure in a Burglary—Unlawful Entry—No Force (5b) situation is achieved by use of an unlocked door or window. The element of trespass to the structure is essential in this category, which includes thefts from open garages, open warehouses, open or unlocked dwellings, and open or unlocked common basement areas in apartment houses where entry is achieved by other than the tenant who has lawful access.

The following scenarios illustrate incidents known to law enforcement that reporting agencies must classify as Burglary—Unlawful Entry—No Force (5b):

  • While a housewife was in the backyard hanging clothes, a 14-year-old boy entered her house through the unlocked front door and took her purse. When the woman realized her purse was missing, she called the police. The police subsequently located the boy and charged him with juvenile delinquency.
  • A woman posing as a maintenance employee entered an unlocked office and stole a wallet from a cabinet.
  • During the night, someone stole a $24,000 car out of an unlocked, but closed, private garage. Two days later, police found the car abandoned in a nearby town. No suspect was identified.

In certain circumstances of burglary, an agency may be required to identify, classify, and report both Forcible Entry (5a) and Unlawful Entry—No Force (5b) within the same incident. Therefore, the agency will occasionally report offenses in two or more categories.

The following scenario illustrates an incident known to law enforcement that reporting agencies must classify in two subcategories of burglary:

  • After closing hours, a thief entered an unlocked door of a warehouse. The warehouse contained a number of offices of individual shipping companies. The subject broke into eight of the company offices, rifled the office desks, and stole some items from each office.

Explanation : The reporting agency must classify this incident as eight offenses of Burglary— Forcible Entry (5a) and one offense of Burglary—Unlawful Entry—No Force (5b).

Burglary—Attempted Forcible Entry

This category includes those situations where a forcible entry burglary is attempted but not completed. Once the thief is inside a locked structure, the offense becomes a Burglary—Forcible Entry (5a). Agencies must classify attempts to enter an unlocked structure as well as actual trespass to an unlocked structure as Burglary—Unlawful Entry—No Force (5b). Only situations in which a thief has attempted to break into a locked structure are classified as Burglary—Attempted Forcible Entry (5c).

The following scenario illustrates an incident known to law enforcement that reporting agencies must classify as Burglary—Attempted Forcible Entry (5c):

  • Police investigation verified an attempted break-in at the local bank. There were no suspects in the incident.

Report Writing on Bank Robbery

You must have come across multiple reports on bank robberies taking place around the country. Have you paid attention to the kind of details that have been added in such a report? These are some basic questions that bother students a lot. Well, in this article, you will get to know about everything you need to know when writing a report on bank robbery.

While reporting about a bank robbery, the first and foremost thing to keep in mind is to report when and where the bank robbery took place. Knowing how the bank robbery took place can help decide the course of action after the robbery. The report on bank robbery should also include the amount of money/things looted from the bank and also the number of people who were injured during the event. You can also talk about whether the police were able to get hold of the robbers or not.

Let us now look at the following reports on bank robbery to get a clear idea about how to write one.

Report on Bank Robbery in Orissa

On the 3rd of March, a daring bank robbery took place in a nationalized bank in Bhubaneshwar. Bank authorities complained that ten lakh rupees and important valuable assets were stolen from the lockers. It was reported that four men arrived at the bank around 12:00 p.m. pretending to be customers and went to the Manager’s chambers to talk to him about some issues and, within a few minutes, held all the people in the bank hostage. The bank’s security guards were injured in an attempt to stop the robbers. The robbers had threatened the cashier, keeping her at gunpoint, to empty the cash box and hand them the entire cash. They also wanted the keys to the locker room from the Manager, and upon refusing, the robbers injured him and tore down the office to look for the locker room keys and, in the process, destroyed many valuable documents. The robbers succeeded in finding the locker keys and cleared the lockers within a few minutes, and ran out of the bank.

The police were informed, and when they arrived, the robbers had already left. The injured guards were taken to the nearest hospital and provided treatment. The police officials took statements from the witnesses and the bank’s manager. The CCTV footage of the bank and the nearby areas were collected for investigation. The police questioned the nearby shops to help them make sketches of the robbers. However, no arrests were made regarding the matter.

Report on Bank Robbery in West Bengal

On 2nd February 2021, a bank robbery took place in West Bengal’s Tajpur SBI branch. Three men armed with guns entered the bank and injured the security guards. More than 6 lakh rupees was plundered, and important documents were destroyed. According to local people, they had seen a Maruti 800 van parked outside the bank around 10:30 in the morning. The two robbers put the cashier at gunpoint and demanded money, according to the witnesses. When the cashier resisted, the robbers injured him badly, broke the cash box, and looted the money. The robbers then rummaged through the entire bank to get the keys to the lockers. After finding the keys, the robbers ransacked several lockers and took away many valuable assets.

Locals also reported hearing multiple gunshots being fired from the bank. When the police arrived, they found no one shot; instead, they found the security guards and the cashier injured. Both were taken to the nearest hospital and provided with the necessary treatment. The police collected statements from the customers who were present in the bank during the robbing incident. CCTV footage of the bank and the nearby areas were collected for investigation by the police. The police questioned the nearby shopkeepers to help them make a sketch of the robbers. However, no arrests have been made regarding the matter at the moment.

  • How to Write a Fire Investigation Report

Crime scene reports are critical components of an investigation. They reveal in great detail what a police officer or investigator saw upon arrival at the scene so that experts can later analyze the information in an effort to determine what transpired. Therefore, crime scene reports must be as thorough as possible, leaving nothing out.

Basic Crime Scene Procedure

Upon reporting to the scene of a crime, first establish the boundaries of the scene. Next, secure and protect the scene, ensuring the safety of all present and the security of evidence. Doing so will enable you to properly document the details in your crime scene report.

You should not smoke, chew tobacco, eat, drink or use the restroom upon arriving at a crime scene. Instead, writing your crime scene report must be the first thing you do once you have ensured the safety of all individuals present and secure any available evidence. You should also take photographs of the crime scene whenever possible unless there is a member of your team present dedicated to crime scene photography. How to Write a Crime Report

A crime scene report should always contain the who, what, when, where and how of an investigation. It is not possible in most cases to include the reason why a crime was committed, as this is often speculative.

Information should be documented in an organized fashion and should describe all of the individuals involved in the incident. List whether each was a victim, perpetrator or bystander. Describe the individual in great detail, including race, gender, height, weight, hair color, hairstyle, eye color, facial hair, any distinguishing marks and clothing worn. Take note of names, ages, addresses, contact information, occupations, employers and social security numbers for all involved parties.

The narrative portion of a crime scene report should overflow with detail. Start by noting the time you were called to the scene and explain what the caller stated had occurred. Describe who traveled to the scene with you and when you arrived. Things like time of day, temperature, precipitation, wind, humidity and light levels can be critical to an investigation, so be sure to note them all.

Include information about all involved officers or law enforcement agents, and who said and did what at the crime scene. Note any emergency personnel who responded and their reports of any injuries. Also discuss your impression of any injuries.

Describe what you saw at the scene in great detail. Positions of victims, witness, perpetrators or objects are all relevant to an investigation. Take statements from all involved parties, and document their assertions about what occurred. The more information you are able to collect, the more easily the investigation can conclude quickly and justly for all involved parties.

A crime scene report should be as detailed as possible and include information about all individuals present and the locations of all persons and objects. Your impressions of the scene should be documented without including suppositions.

Newspaper Report Writing

write a newspaper report on the incident of burglary

One of the essentials of becoming a journalist is writing a newspaper report. When writing the said report in the newspaper, it is essential that your report must be able to answer these following questions: who, what, when, where, why, and how. But aside from these questions, the most important one remains to be: so what? The question “so what” refers to the impact of the said news report and how it affects the general public in any way. For instance, Cable News Network (CNN) reports that North Korea and US representatives will meet in Finland.

So what will this meeting mean to the American citizens? What about to the North Koreans or even the South Koreans? Who are the participants going to be? Will the concept of peace talks between the two countries push through? Is it going to be successful? And if ever it does, does that mean that North Korea is planning to go for denuclearization? These are the kinds of questions that the journalist needs to ask for the curious public to know and find out as they read about it.

According to the book The Elements of Journalism written by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel in their book, they stated that the first two principles of journalism would be to the truth and to its citizens. You may or may not be taking up journalism or any of its related courses, but it is important for you to know how actual journalists gather the news. You may also see news article outline example .

How to Write a Newspaper Report

Figure out what to write about.

Normally, it would be the assignments editor or the desk editor that would give you the occasion or incident that you would need to write about. Other styles of journalism are better for things like profiles, advice articles, and opinion pieces. But there are times that they would not be around to hand you your assignment for the day. So what would you then? You may also see Interview Report Examples .

a. The first thing you can do is to ask around for story ideas, especially government officials and public relations representatives.

b. Take a copy of today’s newspaper and check for an interesting news article that piques your interest, or maybe you can scan the news to see what is already happening. This could lead to you finding other story ideas that are related.

c. Check for any updates in social media to find out about the local events that might be occurring soon.

d. Attend city council meetings to find out if there are any local issues happening in your area. For instance, you can sit in with the regional health department and listen to the seminars or any health advisories given by the doctors on a certain disease.

e. If you are assigned to cover as a court reporter, sit in on trials at the courthouse and see if anything interesting happens that you could report on.

Newspaper Report

Go to the scene

Journalists are not office people. Let’s get that straight. They do not get their news by sitting in the office, browsing through social media just waiting for it to happen. The journalist has to go out and get his or her hands dirty (figuratively, and not literally nor morally). Once you find out what you want to write about, conduct some field work. It might take minutes, or it might even take hours, but regardless, you still need to go out there. It will be difficult to write about something that you are not present at. You may also see How to Write a Report .

a. Write down everything you see and everything that takes place.

b. Record and take notes of any speeches that occur at events. Make sure to get the names, position and contact details of the speaker in case you might have further questions or clarifications that need answering.

write a newspaper report on the incident of burglary

Conduct interviews

Who your interview will depend on what you are reporting on. But take note that you cannot interview just anyone. For instance, if your report will be about the effects of marijuana in the body, interviewing just any doctor would not suffice. You would need to interview a specialist whose field and research lies on these illegal drugs. You would want to get a broad range of quotes for your report, so try to interview an array of people.

Good people to interview are event coordinators, lawyers, police, business owners, volunteers, participants, and witnesses. If you need to find people to schedule interviews with them, use the internet to find contact information or gather contact information about them in the field. You can also interview people directly at the scene, depending on your news report topic.

a. If the story is controversial or political, make sure to get multiple points of view from different sides of the issue. In journalism, only getting two sides is considered “armageddon”, meaning it only represents a good and evil side.

b. Prepare a sample list of questions. But do not always stick with them. Ask more questions should the need arise to make your report as comprehensive as possible, making your story newsworthy.

c. Think of an interview as a conversation. Do not be too casual, and do not be too demanding as well. It is important to speak to someone with authority. You may also see Report Outline Examples .

d. Record the interview. But as you record the interview, make sure that you take down notes as well in the interview and jot the specific time frame as to when the answer was given so that you would not have to listen to the whole interview for that specific comment.

e. Make sure to get the full names (spelled correctly) of anyone you interviewed. Try to get their contact details as well so that you can ask them for further questions or clarifications.

write a newspaper report on the incident of burglary

Transcribe the interviews and speeches

This would probably be the most tiring of step of them all, but you gotta do it anyway. Every word, every pause, every sentence. Take note of them all. So that it would be easier on your part to find all the necessary quotes required for the story. In case if a certain quote needs clarification, best contact the source so that he or she can verify that.

Do research on the subject

Research, research, research. If you do not know something and would like to find out about it, Google it. Almost everything can be found on the Internet now. One important thing about conducting research is that you can add additional information about that certain topic which can make your story more substantial and newsworthy. The Elements of News

There are elements that need to be considered when one writes a news report. In the book “The Daily Miracle: An Introduction to Journalism”, Conley and Lamble (2006) present these eight updated elements of news as the basis in determining newsworthiness for news stories that are being published namely: impact, conflict, timeliness, proximity, prominence, currency, human interest and unusual.

write a newspaper report on the incident of burglary

1. Impact. According to the proponents, an impact is equivalent to newsworthiness. This value not only represents a story’s importance to society but also mirrors a greater significance of the decisions one makes in his or her life.

2 . Conflict. When one thinks about conflict stories, the first thing that would pop in mind would be issues surrounding murder, crimes of any scale, terrorist attacks, even political clashes and war between nations. Conflict-based stories usually entice interest to the general public. You may also see Progress Report writing .

3 . Timeliness. This is the quality that pertains to “being news”. Currency and timeliness are both similar news values since they relate to the significance of the ‘when’ element.

4 . Proximity. This value is particularly associated with the ‘where’ element of the story. Sometimes, proximity-based stories involving ethnic and cultural differences would result in gaps among the minorities and community at large. A national story can also be considered a local news story if the story is framed in a local context. You may also see Short Report

5 . Prominence. This value most often associated with people who are highly recognizable locally, nationally and even internationally that the common public takes an interest in their solo lives as well. However, prominence is more associated with credibility than with position.

6 . Currency. Also known as the concept of “now”, currency not only relates to controversy, trends but also towards lifestyle and technology. But in determining news value through currency leaning on a more serious light, the media must be able to assess on whether the strength and relevance of the new conditions being added to the ongoing story incite intellectual discussion. You may also see Business Report .

7 . Human interest. One thing that comes to mind when human interest is mentioned is a feature or ‘soft’ stories in newspapers; though it can be said that all news stories possess a human interest to a certain degree. Human interest stories can range from humorous to tragic incidents to the basic necessities that are sometimes taken for granted like food clothes, and shelter, to rising social issues. It is these types of news that can sometimes ‘give a human face’ to the issue that can sometimes bring out the best of a person’s good heart and nature. You may also see Formal Report .

8 . Unusual. And finally, there is the news value of the unusual which from the word itself, dictates that the story is simply out of the ordinary; not to mention it conflicts with existing practices and contradicts current trends as well.

The Basic News Structure

Writing the news takes practice and skill that requires you to gather the necessary information that the public needs to be aware of. Most, if not all journalists follow a specific format called the inverted pyramid wherein the most important information is written first all the way down to the least important information. Remember that in news writing, a sentence is equivalent to a paragraph, so it is important to only place one thought per sentence in order for the article not to become too wordy in one paragraph. The inverted pyramid consists of four parts:

1. Lead.  This opening paragraph is considered most essential part of a news report that can be written in one to two sentences or 27 words to be exact. A good lead manages to grab the audience’s interests and must answer the question: “So what?” The lead gives readers the most important information in a clear, concise and interesting manner. It also establishes the voice and direction of an article. You may also see  Performance Report Examples

2. Context or Contrast or Controversy or Conflict.  Context is defined as the parts of a discourse that surround a word (or in this case, an event). What parts do you think the audience already knows and what do you think is new they would need to know? Contrast presents the readers with opposites of the said issue.

3. Quote.  Quotes add substantial basis to the said issue at hand, and it is one way to prove that the reporter is not lying and that the source has really said it. Quotes are also written to give the people a voice that allows them to be heard by society.

4. Core.  The core is the final part of your news outline wherein all other supporting details that the journalist would want to include is going to be written there.

You may also see writing entertainment news outline to give you another idea on how the ‘soft’ news can be written. Writing the news is never easy. It is challenging and tough. There are days that the source will not answer your questions, or the story itself is bigger than it seems that you are not able to submit the story on time. It’s OK. Just remember to do what you can in your situation and be persistent!

How to Write an Incident Report

Last Updated: February 8, 2024 Fact Checked

This article was co-authored by Clinton M. Sandvick, JD, PhD . Clinton M. Sandvick worked as a civil litigator in California for over 7 years. He received his JD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1998 and his PhD in American History from the University of Oregon in 2013. This article has been fact-checked, ensuring the accuracy of any cited facts and confirming the authority of its sources. This article has been viewed 1,235,324 times.

If you're a security guard or police officer deployed to the scene of an incident, writing up a detailed and accurate report is an important part of doing your job correctly. A good incident report gives a thorough account of what happened without glossing over unsavory information or leaving out important facts. It's crucial to follow the appropriate protocol, describe the incident clearly, and submit a polished report.

Things You Should Know

  • Get the correct forms from your institution. Pay attention to any special instructions since forms may vary slightly.
  • Note the time, date, and location of the incident on the form. Include your full name and ID number, as well.
  • Write a first person narrative explaining what happened at the scene. Be honest, clear, and concise.
  • Proofread your incident report and revise any mistakes before submitting it.

Incident Report Template and Example

write a newspaper report on the incident of burglary

Following Protocol

Step 1 Obtain the proper forms from your institution.

  • Follow any instructions that accompany the forms. Each organization uses a different format, so pay attention to the guidelines.
  • In some cases you're responsible for filling out a form issued by your institution. In other cases you'll be asked to type or write up the report on your own.

Tip: If possible, do your write up using word processing software. It will look neater, and you'll be able to use spell check to polish it when you're finished. If you write your report by hand, print clearly instead of using cursive. Don't leave people guessing whether your 7s are actually 1s.

Step 2 Provide the basic facts.

  • The time, date and location of the incident (be specific; write the exact street address, etc.).
  • Your name and ID number.
  • Names of other members of your organization who were present

Step 3 Include a line about the general nature of the incident.

  • For example, you could write that you were called to a certain address after a person was reported for being drunk and disorderly.
  • Note that you should not write what you think might have happened. Stick to the facts, and be objective.

Step 4 Start the report as soon as possible.

Describing What Happened

Step 1 Write a first person narrative telling what happened.

  • Use the full names of each person included in the report. Identify all persons the first time they are cited in your report by listing: first, middle, and last names; date of birth, race, gender, and reference a government issued identification number. In subsequent sentences, you can then refer to them using just their first and last names: "Doe, John" or "John Doe". Start a new paragraph to describe each person's actions separately. Answer the who, what, when, where, and why of what happened.
  • For example, when the police officer mentioned above arrives at the residence where he got the call, he could say: "Upon arrival the officer observed a male white, now known as Doe, John Edwin; date of birth: 03/15/1998; California Driver's License 00789142536, screaming and yelling at a female white, know known as, Doe, Jane, in the front lawn of the above location (the address given earlier). The officer separated both parties involved and conducted field interviews. The officer was told by Mr. John Doe that he had came home from work and discovered that dinner was not made for him. He then stated that he became upset at his wife Mrs. Jane Doe for not having the dinner ready for him."
  • If possible, make sure to include direct quotes from witnesses and other people involved in the incident. For example, in the above scenario, the officer could write “Jane said to me ‘Johnny was mad because I didn’t have dinner ready right on time.'”
  • Include an accurate description of your own role in the course of what occurred. If you had to use physical force to detain someone, don't gloss over it. Report how you handled the situation and its aftermath.

Step 2 Be thorough.

  • For example, instead of saying “when I arrived, his face was red,” you could say, “when I arrived, he was yelling, out of breath, and his face was red with anger.” The second example is better than the first because there are multiple reasons for someone’s face to be red, not just that they are angry.
  • Or, instead of saying “after I arrived at the scene, he charged towards me,” you should say “when I arrived at the scene I demanded that both parties stop fighting. After taking a breath and looking at me, he began to run quickly towards me and held his hand up like he was about to strike me.”

Step 3 Be accurate.

  • For example, if a witness told you he saw someone leap over a fence and run away, clearly indicate that your report of the incident was based upon a witness account; it is not yet a proven fact.
  • Additionally, if you are reporting what the witness told you, you should write down anything that you remember about the witness's demeanor. If their statement's cause controversy later, your report can prove useful. For example, it would be helpful to know that a witness appeared excited while telling you what happened, or if they seemed very calm and evenhanded.

Step 4 Be clear.

  • Keep your writing clear and concise.
  • Additionally, do not use legal or technical words: For example, say “personal vehicle” instead of “P.O.V.” (personally owned vehicle), and “scene of the crime” instead of the typical numbered code that police typically use to notify others of their arrival.
  • Use short, to-the-point sentences that emphasize facts and that don't leave room for interpretation. Instead of writing "I think the suspect wanted to get back at his wife, because he seemed to have ill intentions when he walked up to her and grabbed her," write "The suspect [insert name] walked over to his wife [name] and forcefully grabbed her by the wrist."

Step 5 Be honest.

Polishing the Report

Step 1 Double check the basic facts.

  • Do not try to make sure that statements in your report match those of your colleagues. Individually filed reports guarantee that more than one account of an incident survives. Incident reports can appear later in a court of law. If you alter the facts of your report to match those of another, you can be penalized.

Step 2 Edit and proofread your report.

  • Check it one more time for spelling and grammar errors.
  • Remove any words that could be seen as subjective or judgmental, like words describing feelings and emotions.

Step 3 Submit your incident report.

NYC paying record $28M settlement to family of Rikers inmate left severely brain damaged after suicide attempt: report

T he city has agreed to pay $28.7 million to the family of a Rikers Island inmate left severely brain damaged during a suicide attempt he made while jail guards watched, court records show.

The incident left Nicholas Feliciano needing a lifetime of care, sparked criminal charges against four of the guards and prompted his family to sue the city, the Health and Hospitals Corporation and others.

While a judge still needs to sign off on the proposed deal, the settlement would rank as one of the largest payouts the city has made to a person in a civil rights case, according to The New York Times, which first reported on the deal.

Feliciano was 18 when he ended up on Rikers in November 2019 for an alleged parole violation, according to a report from the city’s Board of Correction and the lawsuit.

The Queens man had a documented history of metal illness and suicide attempts, and nine days after he was sent to jail, he tried to hang himself from inside his cell, his family contended in their Manhattan Federal Court lawsuit.

Guards allegedly watched Feliciano dangle from a garment he hung on a hook from the ceiling for seven minutes but did nothing, his family alleged in court papers.

Feliciano was finally saved by a jail captain who saw what happened on a surveillance camera and went to cut him down from the makeshift noose, according to the legal papers.

Now 22, Feliciano needs constant care, “has limited vocal functions,” cannot stand independently or feed himself, the family said in the litigation which originally sought unspecified damages.

He also has short-term memory loss, and remembers very little from before the suicide attempt, his grandmother, Madeline Feliciano told The Times, adding the proposed settlement would help cover the costs for Feliciano’s lifetime of care.

“It is not going to bring Nicholas back to who he was,” Madeline, 57, said.

“He has to live with this injury for rest of his life.”

Two of the guards pleaded guilty last year to official misconduct, with the others still have pending criminal cases.

“The settlement of this tragic case was in the best interest of all parties,” a Law Department spokesman told The Post.

“The DOC is working to ensure the safety of all on Rikers, including those afflicted with serious mental illness.”

Feliciano had been attacked twice while in Rikers and should not have been placed with the general jail population due to his mental health issues, the family’s lawyer, David B. Rankin, told The Times.

Rankin could not immediately be reached for comment.

Demonstrators rally outside Holyrood against the SNP's hate crime bill

JK Rowling will not be arrested under new Scottish hate law, say police

‘No further action’ over posts by author and gender-critical activist despite complaints

Comments by JK Rowling challenging police to arrest her for online misgendering do not amount to a crime, Police Scotland said.

As the Scottish government’s contentious hate crime law came into force on Monday, the author and gender-critical activist posted a thread on X saying the legislation was “wide open to abuse” after listing sex offenders who had described themselves as transgender alongside well-known trans women activists, describing them as “men, every last one of them”.

She stated that “freedom of speech and belief are at an end in Scotland if the accurate description of biological sex is deemed criminal”.

On Tuesday afternoon, Police Scotland confirmed they had received complaints about the social media post but added: “The comments are not assessed to be criminal and no further action will be taken.”

The act brings together existing laws. Under the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021, it is a crime to make derogatory comments based on age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity or being intersex.

As concerns continue about officers being overwhelmed, reports suggest Police Scotland has received at least 3,000 complaints under the new act in the two days since it came into force.

Responding to the decision, Rowling said: “I hope every woman in Scotland who wishes to speak up for the reality and importance of biological sex will be reassured by this announcement, and I trust that all women – irrespective of profile or financial means – will be treated equally under the law.”

Earlier on Tuesday, the force also confirmed that racist graffiti found on Monday near Humza Yousaf’s family home in Broughty Ferry had been recorded under the new act.

The first minister said the graffiti, which contained a racial slur against him, was a reminder of why Scotland must take a “zero-tolerance” approach to hatred. On X, he said: “I do my best to shield my children from the racism and Islamophobia I face on a regular basis. That becomes increasingly difficult when racist graffiti targeting me appears near our family home.”

The Scottish National party leader robustly defended the legislation, which has prompted a barrage of criticism about how it will be policed and how it could affect freedom of speech, as well as fears that it could be used maliciously against certain groups for expressing their opinions, in particular gender-critical feminists.

Yousaf said it “absolutely protects people in their freedom of expression” while guarding “people from a rising tide of hatred that we’ve seen far too often in our society”.

The prime minister, Rishi Sunak, asked about Rowling’s comment on Tuesday morning, said that while he would not comment on a police matter, “nobody should be criminalised for saying commonsense things about biological sex”.

Robbie de Santos, the director of campaigns and human rights at Stonewall, said: “The prime minister and high-profile commentators are simply incorrect when they suggest that misgendering or ‘stating facts on biology’ would be criminalised.

“This is no more true than stating that the existing law has criminalised the criticism of religion. This kind of misrepresentation about the act and its purpose only serves to trivialise the very real violence committed against us in the name of hate.”

He called on political leaders to address the trend of “rising hate and escalating violence” facing LGBTQ+ people. “We already have longstanding laws preventing the incitement of hatred on the basis of race and religion, and the new Hate Crime Act creates parity in the law in Scotland by expanding these protections to cover sexual orientation, transgender identity, age and disability,” he said.
