Gift a friend (or yourself) what writers want most: time, space, and a place to focus.

writers retreat east coast

Networking, hustle, and industry understanding are unfortunate burdens of the life of a young and working writer. But trickier still is finding solitude. Privacy, quiet, and uninterruption are crucial to the craft; if solitude is one of the challenges of writing, it is also essential.

While residencies and fellowships are wonderful, most ask for applications and portfolios, and that can be prohibitive when you’re just starting out. Writing retreats are another means of getting away — and they can be done affordably, some even offering scholarships. Most bring together a small community of writers for a few days, so there is the opportunity for socializing and meeting the like-minded. Some involve travel to local sites or parks, or daily meetings to discuss the industry or the craft.

If you’re looking to get some peace and focus — or the best gift for your writerly friend this holiday season — here are some of the best writing retreats we found that won’t break your bank.

Wellspring House Retreat  — Ashfield, Massachusetts, $260-$280/week

Retired English professor Preston Browning is the co-director of Wellspring House with his wife, author Ann Hutt Browning. The Wellspring House is run exclusively as a retreat for writers and artists, and as such is open all year: winter rates (mid-November to April 1st) are $260/week for an individual, and $290/week for a couple. Normal rates are only slightly higher: $280/week for an individual, and $310/week for a couple. You can also choose to stay just one to three nights for about $60–$90 per night. Each stay comes with access to the large living room and kitchen, along with access to one of the two common bathrooms (in total, the house hosts about six rooms). And if you’re really looking to get away, this retreat will help you do it: while the house offers modern amenities like laundry, the website warns that the house has no cell phone service.

“To share your writing with Jen Louden is to give it attention from someone who embodies a magic combination of sage, cheerleader, interlocuter and advocate. Jen listens so closely she hears not only what is said, but what may want to be said. The depth of her belief in human creativity is only matched by her clarity and commitment to drawing that creativity out in every writer she works with. I feel like I’ve been given a gift of incalculable worth every time Jen’s expertise and love for writing and writers have pulled up a chair alongside me, to be a companion at whatever point I’m at in a project.”

– Jennifer Harvey, author of NYT Bestseller Raising White Kids and Dear White Christians

“Joining a writing retreat with Jennifer Louden was a gift: a nourishment to my creative self, to the words and the mystery on the page that was beckoning me, and to the story that I know needed to be told. One of the best parts of the experience was finally carving out enough generous space to do the writing I know I need to do in this world.

She is smart, wise, and truly an expert in not only storytelling, but in leading and guiding you through your own writer’s journey. She held the space and created a container for us to be open and honest and brave. I’m so grateful for her wisdom and skill at leading groups of people—she makes it seem easy (it’s so not!) and lets you step away from whatever life is beckoning you with to finally, for a moment, for a day, for a week: get to tell the stories that only you can tell.”

– Sarah K. Peck | Writer, Entrepreneur & Yoga Teacher | SarahKPeck.com

“I chose to give myself the gift of Jen’s writing retreat because I thought I would be nurtured by southwest skies, the loving community of other remarkable women, and Jen’s wise guidance and facilitation. I was right. Jen’s deep experience facilitating retreats is evident in every graceful, moving moment of the experience. When I met a friend for dinner the day I got back she said, ‘Oh my God, I have never seen you look like this. You are GLOWING.’ I got great writing done, learned a lot, but most of all, fed my soul.”

– Tara Sophia Mohr, author and women’s leadership expert, taramohr.com

“The retreat was exactly the kind of soul-nourishing experience I’ve been wanting to give myself. It was the perfect blend of guidance and open space. I loved the free dance in the morning, the writing prompts, and the small group was perfect! Being in the retreat location was transformational. It brought me back to myself in a new way and reminded me why I am here. It was beautiful!”

During this discussion we will learn how to write vibrant settings—be it the the kitchen table, the cereal aisle of a grocery store, hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, or in bed at night. Settings are opportunities to reveal character, heighten theme, create tone, and hook readers with our canny ability to depict the world. We’ll write, we’ll discuss, we’ll read a bit, we’ll share and delight in each other’s work.

This retreat is NOT for you if:

You want to learn about getting published or getting an agent. you can ask me all the questions you want but this is not a writer’s conference., you’re a literary snob. the writer’s retreat draws all kinds of writers so you must like and respect diversity., you can’t stay offline. i ask you to limit or cut out entirely your internet time., you want a healing retreat. this is a writing retreat where healing happens..

It is not a therapeutic retreat. I am not a trauma informed leader or coach.

You can’t stop yourself from giving advice or talking during silent times.

You don’t know my work at all. please do not come without knowing my work or my personality at least a little bit.

“I had a lot of anxiety before I came, around feeling like a fraud as a writer, and what if after spending this money and time, I come away without having made any changes in my writing and creative practice? Those fears evaporated by the second day.

I came hoping for an ‘assignment’ from the universe for my next project and I received it while brushing my teeth on the morning of the third day! I was thrilled beyond belief. I worked on my new idea the rest of the week and received crackerjack coaching from Jen. I also received gracious, positive feedback from other women, which made me think that there’s a market for this book. I’m no longer floundering, but have a clear direction for my next creative project.

Benefits of attending? The place. The conscious, creative women. The luscious food. The teaching. The times of solitude and socializing. The structure created by Jen that allowed so much to come forth. Being stirred in the cauldron of creativity where magic and transformation happen.

If you are serious about wanting time to yourself, do whatever you have to do to come to the Writer’s Retreat.”

“This was hands down the best retreat I’ve ever been on. It starts with the absolute sacred and inspiring space and then blend in the incredibly skilled facilitation of Jen. As a retreat junkie and leader, watching/experiencing how Jen held space and boundaries was very inspiring. It was also very comforting and inspiring to see that Jen really walks her talk on retreating, self care, and being authentic.

The focus on the body through morning dance and afternoon yoga was also key to opening me up to deeper realms. It was a beautiful blend of true personal retreat combined with exploring writing. I learned a lot about the craft of writing. I left transformed.”

“The best part about this retreat was the incredible support Jen and her team create for attendees to write and engage in self-care. I was so nervous about what it meant that I was going to a week-long writing retreat — my inner critic kept asking, “WHO ARE YOU TO DO THIS?!” — but I was so lovingly supported throughout. I left the retreat so happy with what I’d written and a great deal more confident about calling myself a writer.

This was one of the best investments I’ve ever made in my heart’s work, and I’m so grateful I did it!”

“Whether you are a seasoned author or a newbie, Jen Louden’s retreats provide a perfect blend of structure and spaciousness to allow for your creative muse to emerge. I felt unfettered by fear of criticism, enriched by the writing exercises and group discussions, and nourished by the emphasis on deep listening to my own voice. This was a true gift in my life, and I would recommend it to all who yearn to inspire the writer within them.”

– Elise Miller

“This retreat with Jen and the community of women who came together was more than a week of writing. Her approach, center in self-love and motivation, reminded me that doing my work is centered in believing in my own capabilities, honoring myself– and in that honoring giving birth to my thoughts and experiences through writing.”

– Walker Thornton | Speaker, Author, Educator | WalkerThornton.com

“The Writers Retreat shifted the lens on not just my writing but also myself. I have finally been given permission to see the writing process through a compassionate and creative lens which gives me more freedom on the page. Jen’s capacity to hold space for us while we understood our inner critic and bravely brought pen to paper is a key piece of the week, and our relationships to ourselves and with each other is stronger because of it. The magic of the location does not remain contained in the mountains but travels with us and through us as we create more magic in our stories. I am forever grateful for this experience.”

– Lara C.C. Pence, PsyD, MBA | Licensed Clinical Psychologist | DrLaraPence.com

“I came away from the Retreat knowing where I was going with my writing project. Prior to that, much frustration! I feel I changed as a writer because I value my voice in my writing now, I learned about Enoughness which really seems to bring more production in my writing than if I hadn’t experienced what it means. So much encouragement from Jen and the other writers. A time of awakening!”

– Cherie Lang

writers retreat east coast

“This was my first writer’s retreat and, while I accomplished my personal goals of writing a certain number of pages and accepting (finally) that I was indeed a writer, there were so many other benefits. The early morning dance sessions and afternoon yoga helped to stimulate creativity and literally shake loose old habits and routines. This enabled me to approach my work from different perspectives. The small and large group sessions provided invaluable support and a safe and nurturing environment for all. Jen Louden is an outstanding facilitator – knowledgeable, kind, enthusiastic and approachable. I cannot recommend Jen Louden and any enterprise she is involved with enough!”

– Dr. Joanna Kafarowski

“If you’re a writer, want to be a writer, are writing but refuse to accept the title: make it your goal to find @jenlouden and start getting her email newsletter today..I did that over 2 years ago and last week it became clear why I felt called to her work, even during the most insane time of my life- tiny babies, tiny apartment, tiny pockets of time to write.

It’s taken me a few days to say anything about Jen’s retreat for writers I attended last week because leaving, it felt like the most valuable things I took with me were intangible and beyond words.

But now that I’m back in life, the tangibles are showing up left and right.

I learned why I write, how to better assess my work, how to stay with the process even when chocolate and Netflix are calling, and how to understand, or even silence, my inner critics.

Jen, a career writer and self-care guru extraordinaire, has the retreat life down to a science- and her science is Safety. I can’t get over how emotionally safe and valued I felt the entire 7 days.

She creates an environment of love and respect (and FUN!) that can’t help but permeate one’s writing and ability to dig deep to discover what’s dying to be said.

I met incredible women from across the country, Canada and Australia; no two were alike and yet we were totally alike.

Writing fiction and nonfiction, memoir and blog posts, the reasons for writing varied little, the themes pointing to the same values, and the act of sharing a safe space for a time created bonds I thought were only found in jokes about women’s retreats.

My favorite line all week: “This is what my husband was afraid would happen!” when we were all sobbing and wishing we could join the JL cult for life and call it good.

It’s hard to get away, especially with small kids. I’m grateful to have a village to raise my children with me,and grateful for a husband who tells my kids that Mom is out doing something she loves a lot so she can come home and do what she loves most.

Investing in myself this way pays dividends to my family; I’m seeing them already.

Just don’t get me started on the food. I took a million photos of the food I didn’t have to cook”

writing retreat for women

The Salty Quill

With three separate sessions, McGee Island, a private island off the mid-coast of Maine, will be home to the ninth annual Salty Quill Writers’ Retreat for Women, where 12 women writers will enjoy days of uninterrupted writing time, three chef-prepared meals a day, and after-dinner readings and critiques. Freely wander two private islands with miles of trails, kayaks, rowboats, a sauna, and even an outdoor shower, or curl up in a soft easy chair or your antique-filled room and write, nap, read—whatever you do, the time is yours.

Each year, writers who come find themselves immersed in a luxury they often don't afford themselves—quiet time dedicated to their craft, something so often relegated to the backburner in busy lives. Salty Quill writers often gain a sense of commitment to their writing a worthy enterprise. The remote old-world and quiet atmosphere fosters a sense of community that is supportive, not competitive. And, although writers often leave reluctantly, they go with the comfort of newfound friends, colleagues, and community, and a renewed sense of purpose and value in their work.

In 2024, we are offering three weeklong sessions. We welcome applications from practicing writers of fiction, non-fiction, screen plays, and poetry, as well as translators and playwrights. The Salty Quill is the perfect place for writers who identify as women, who often struggle to find time to write. The retreat's purpose is to allow time to write. This is not a retreat with craft sessions or workshops. Other than during meals, reading salons or self-guided outings on the island, we basically spend time doing what we came to do—quietly write, rest, restore, repeat. In 2024, we are once again offering three full-week scholarships  to women writers. For more information, visit our Scholarships page. For more information, email [email protected]

*Please note: Covid-19 precautions remain in place. Testing pre- and post-arrival and up-to-date vaccinations and boosters are required to attend. Ultimately, the health and well-being of every attendee will guide our decision. For the safety of all, anyone become ill with any kind of contagious illness during the retreat will be asked to leave to safeguard the health of the remaining writers.

Three meals a day are prepared by our personal chef in the Cook House, where writers will find morning breakfast and mid-day lunch set out buffet style. Each evening, writers follow the call of the dinner bell when dinner is served. Menus include fresh fruits, garden-fresh vegetables, soups, salads, and creative, inspired healthful dinners. For more, visit On The  Table.

For many who've attended the Salty Quill in past years, McGee Island is a magical place. A private 110-acre island about 3 miles off mid-coast Maine, McGee is home to 12 women writers who attend the Salty Quill Writers' Retreat for Women to immerse themselves in their writing, make lifelong friendships, and relish the comfort of solitude and shared endeavor. To get a sense of the retreat, visit our look back at 2019, 2018 ,  2017 ,  2016 , and 2015 retreats.

stunning destination

Mcgee island, maine .

Perhaps part of the allure of the Salty Quill Writers Retreat is that we have room for only 12 writers to attend each year. With room to nestle into nooks in the living room, parlor, sun room, and the library, on the expansive decks or hidden in the sauna, writers are always eager to spend time writing in the sanctuary of their rooms. Each of nine bedrooms is unique, but all share gorgeous views and understated charm, sprinkled throughout with artwork and antiques. Every bed features fine linens, fresh plump pillows, and a heated mattress pad.

Find the space to create at these off-the-grid retreats near the D.C. area

When you’re at work on an intense artistic project, space is important. There is the need for literal space, where you can create comfortably for long periods free of distraction. And then there’s the metaphorical space, one absent many of the responsibilities of everyday life. A coffee shop or shared workspace doesn’t cut it.

I should know, as I’ve been writing professionally for more than a quarter-century. Although I have done my work in every less-than-ideal situation you can imagine — in the back row by the bathroom on a red-eye flight, at a busy food court in a mall during the holiday rush, and on the sidelines of too many sporting events to count — it wasn’t pleasant, it hindered my creative process and it sometimes negatively affected the quality of my prose.

That’s why I plan a retreat when I have an especially important project to focus on. The time away from my family, other work and daily obligations frees me up to concentrate solely on the writing at hand, while a quiet, contemplative space with strong WiFi and extra-strong coffee helps me be productive. Thankfully for us creatives, there are retreats within driving distance of D.C. where we can hone our craft, get our work done and, often, find community to offer support.

New packing cubes, toiletry bags and other space-saving gear for your next trip

Virginia Center for the Creative Arts

Whether you want to work on oil paintings, a musical or a novel, this tranquil arts retreat, a 3½-hour drive from D.C., offers peace and a chance for productivity. Looking out toward the Blue Ridge Mountains, the center is a temporary home to more than 20 artists at a time (roughly 360 a year) enjoying residences up to six weeks long. Writers are given a comfortably monastic studio with a desk and chairs; composers’ studios include the same, plus a baby grand piano. The studios for visual artists have a sink and tables, as well as easels, if requested. (All studios have heating, air conditioning and WiFi.) When not toiling away on artistic endeavors, the Fellows Residence offers creators several spots for communal relaxation: a living room with a fireplace, television room and well-stocked library. As a part of the center’s partnership with Sweet Briar College two miles away, visiting artists can access its libraries and fitness facilities.

To apply: Fill out the online application at vcca.com/apply . Applications for winter 2023 residencies are being accepted until May 15. There is a $30 application fee; applicants will learn about acceptance by Aug. 31.

Cost: $150 per artist, per day. Includes an individual studio, private bedroom and bath, and three meals a day. Fellowships and financial aid are available.

Contact: 154 San Angelo Dr., Amherst, Va.; 434-946-7236; vcca.com .

Porches Writing Retreat

Located about a three-hour drive from D.C. on bluffs overlooking the picturesque James River, this 19th-century farmhouse is the epitome of bucolic solace. The main house has four #cottagecore rooms, each furnished with a writing desk and comfortable chair, and access to high-speed Internet. Writers must prepare their own meals in the well-equipped kitchen (a grocery store is a 20-minute drive away in Lovingston), which includes an all-important coffee maker and tea-making supplies. To relax on-site, there are two wraparound porches with charming river views, as well as a library room with a television and DVD collection.

To apply: Email [email protected] a short biography, description of your project and the dates you would like to spend at the retreat.

Cost: Starting at $68 a night for less than a week. Bed linens provided; guests must bring towels. (Laundry facilities are on the premises.) For an additional cost, there is an opportunity for a one-on-one novel-writing workshop or a poetry collection consultation.

Contact: 56 Pine Hill Lane, Norwood, Va.; 434-263-4135; porcheswritingretreat.com .

10 tips to get the most out of your data and devices while on a road trip

Shenandoah Art Destination

Novices and experts alike are welcome at this countrified art retreat offering classes in painting, drawing, airbrush, drypoint, lino, monoprinting and mixed media. Courses range from a weekend stay to six days long. Participants spend the morning doing focused group exercises before spending the afternoons and beyond pursuing projects on their own. Work takes place in the spacious studio or out on the woodsy, 10-acre property nestled in the Shenandoah Valley, a 3½-hour drive from the District, with majestic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains rearing up on one side and the sweep of the Allegheny Mountains on the other. Artists must bring their own supplies, though the retreat does have some equipment on hand — including easels, drawing boards and light boxes — and a small selection of supplies is available for purchase. Guests stay in the 120-year-old manor house or nearby guesthouse, and are served three communal meals a day, some of which can be enjoyed on the patio, weather permitting.

To reserve: Book a slot in a group session online at shenandoahartdestination.com/reservations . Inquire for solo sessions by emailing [email protected] ; availability is dependent on space.

Cost: Starting at $740 for one artist for a weekend group session.

Unruly Retreat

Moms trying to balance caregiving duties with a writing project are usually fighting a losing battle that the writing never wins. That’s why novelist Hayley DeRoche, a mother herself, decided to create this family-friendly writing retreat designed for a female writer with her children and partner in tow. Situated a 3½-hour drive from Washington, the cheery, colorfully decorated cottage can handle up to eight people across its two bedrooms. The house is stocked with a play kitchen and art supplies for little ones, and there are chickens and goats outside to provide further amusement. Basic snacks are provided; otherwise, writers cook for themselves in the kitchen or on the grill outside. Every year, DeRoche hosts three or four writers for week-long retreats, so they can finally win the battle to work on their projects.

To apply: Fill out online application at unrulyretreat.com/apply . Applications for 2023 residencies are being accepted until Jan. 3. There is a $20 application fee.

Cost: Free.

Contact: 82 Gully Tavern Rd., Rice, Va.; 804-350-7551; unrulyretreat.com .

The Barn at Boyds Mills

Although it’s a five-hour drive from D.C. at the base of the Pocono Mountains in the Upper Delaware River Valley, this serene retreat center is worth the trip. Once owned by the founders of Highlights for Children magazine, Garry and Caroline Myers, the center hosts regular retreats for children’s picture book writers and illustrators. You don’t need to be working on the next “Dragons Love Tacos” or “Owl Moon” to book a personal retreat, though. Whether you stay in a private cabin, the lodge or the farmhouse (ADA-accessible options available), each room has a personal workspace, or you can work in one of the communal spaces scattered across the property, both indoors and out. Retreats include round-the-clock snacks and three meals a day made with local ingredients: herbs from the garden, eggs from nearby farms, dairy from Calkins Creamery, and pastries and breads from Beach Lake Bakery.

To reserve: Inquire about availability at thebarnatboydsmills.com/personal-retreats .

Cost: Starting at $500 for three nights, including meals, linens and towels.

Contact: 392 Boyds Mills Rd., Milanville, Pa.; 570-253-1192; thebarnatboydsmills.com .

UT Austin Creates Writers’ Retreat at Former John Steinbeck Home

Steinbeck House

AUSTIN, Texas — One of the top creative writing programs in the world, The University of Texas at Austin’s Michener Center for Writers, is establishing a retreat for internationally known writers at the Nobel Prize-winning author John Steinbeck’s former residence in Sag Harbor, New York.

A collaboration with the Sag Harbor Partnership, the Township of Southampton and the New York State Assembly and heirs of the Steinbeck estate, the Steinbeck Writers’ Retreat will preserve the legacy of the author’s work and home, provide a residence where writers can work, create opportunities for students, and foster engagement with the Sag Harbor and UT communities.

“The Steinbeck Writers’ Retreat will allow writers the breathing room to unlock their creativity in one of the most inspiring settings on the East Coast as they walk in the steps of one of time’s greatest authors, John Steinbeck,” said UT President Jay Hartzell. “This immersive in-residence program will benefit students, past and present, and broader society. We are grateful to the late Elaine Steinbeck and her heirs who have donated the John Steinbeck Collection to her alma mater and recommended UT’s Michener Center to operate this retreat that will allow writers to pursue ambitious work for generations to come.”

While in residence, writers will live and write in Steinbeck’s former home, where he wrote his final two books and learned that he had won the Nobel Prize. During their stays, writers will also deliver public readings, workshops or other events in the Sag Harbor community and participate in programming with Michener Center students on the UT campus.

Residencies will be offered to writers of fiction, poetry, plays and scripts at different stages of their careers — including both established and promising, emerging writers. Additionally, residencies will be offered to alumni of the Michener Center for Writers .

“During his lifetime, John Steinbeck was committed to supporting young writers and enabling them to succeed,” said Bret Johnston, director of the Michener Center and Steinbeck Writers’ Retreat. “The Steinbeck Writers’ Retreat will continue Steinbeck’s legacy and offer Michener Center alumni an unparalleled resource among creative writing programs.”

The partnership builds upon the University’s existing academic ties to the Steinbeck estate. The Harry Ransom Center is home to the John Steinbeck Collection , which provides the author’s archives of articles, novels, short stories and correspondence for scholars and the public.

John Steinbeck’s wife Elaine Anderson Steinbeck was born in Austin and studied drama at UT Austin. Later, she was instrumental in establishing the John Steinbeck Collection at the Ransom Center.

The first visiting author to stay at the Steinbeck Writers’ Retreat will be Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and playwright Ayad Akhtar , whose work has been published and performed in more than two dozen languages. He is the winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for drama for “Disgraced” and recipient of the 2021 American Book Award for “Homeland Elegies.” Akhtar was named the New York State Author, succeeding Sag Harbor native son Colson Whitehead, by the New York State Writers Institute in 2021.

The University has received donations for startup funding for the Steinbeck Writers’ Retreat and is now fundraising to establish an endowment to support the retreat, including funds for fellowships, operating costs and property expenses.

June 24, 2019 by Donna Martinez 1 Comment

Are you in the middle of your latest great novel? Are your professors wondering when you will finally finish writing your dissertation? Do you have songs and poetry swirling about your head requiring a quiet spot in the world that they may settle into place on paper? It may be you are in need of a writing retreat at Sea Ranch!

Land falls away to sea. What is it about this coast that is so potent? Somehow standing on the precipice looking outward makes me more aware of what I want, what I need to be. Lisa Rizzo, The Sea Ranch

The Perfect Writers Retreat and Escape

writer's retreat,

We invite you to escape to Abalone Bay for your perfect writer’s retreat and escape. Our oceanfront location could be your answer to jump-starting your creative project or revitalize one that has been languishing in the back of your desk. The quiet and magnificent surroundings of Sea Ranch help release you from your writer’s block, finish that chapter, revise your short story, or begin that project you’ve had in the back of your mind for so long.

Getting to Your Sea Ranch Abalone Bay Writer’s Retreat

writer's retreat

The drive to Sea Ranch is inspirational in its own right. Located three hours from the San Francisco airport, the drive that winds seemingly along the edge of the world overlooking Sonoma’s craggy northern coast will either inspire you to wax poetically or bring frightening images of how your antagonist kills the unsuspecting ingenue.

Either way, your writer’s retreat road trip is the perfect first step to revitalizing your creative literary processes.

Once you settle into Abalone Bay’s zen,  the only thing that will punctuate your thoughts will be the sea breezes and the ocean waves crashing along the rocks below. And even though you’ll find television sets at the house, they really are no match for the views outside seen from the windows. Whether you are escaping for a weekend, a week, or even a month, Abalone Bay will quickly become your writing sanctuary.

writer's retreat

If writing alone is not your cup of tea, consider inviting up to 5 more writing buddies, coaches or teachers to join you  (Abalone Bay sleeps 6). You can even bring your four-footed literary critic if you’d like as Abalone Bay is dog-friendly.

writer's retreat

Your writing partners have access to three bedrooms. The two guest rooms provide queen beds separated by the hall bathroom and the master has a king bed with an en suite bathroom.   Together you can plan your perfect writer’s retreat or perhaps a writers craft class among fellow supportive authors and friends. If you find that your writing coach or fellow writing mate is unable to join you, our internet Wi-Fi connection is fast and can help you set up a virtual conference. Telephone service for calling nationally with limited international calling is also available.

Pointers for Planning Your Perfect Writers Retreat at Abalone Bay

Below we have listed a few pointers that may help you plan for your perfect writer’s retreat at Abalone Bay.

Decide to Write in solitude or in the Company of Others

kitchen

Sharing the costs of renting Abalone Bay may be an added bonus to sharing your writing time with others. However, it’s recommended you feel comfortable with your writing partners. Determine how you feel about sharing meals, bathrooms, kitchen space with your writing partners. Will they be supportive or intrusive? Make sure all of you are agreed on the goals of your retreat, that everyone has similar goals and all have agreed to the importance of meeting them. Remember the point is to get away to focus on your writing.

Set your Creative Intentions and Goals

Setting your creative goals or intentions up front will help guide you towards your endpoint and help you remain focused on your writing.  This will also help keep you from drifting off-task once there. Listing your goals with the intent of accomplishing them will help you refrain from straying too far along the bluff trail, or star-gaze too long in the hot tub when you should have finger-tips on the keyboard.

Book Your Writing Time Directly

Dining room

Whether for a weekend, a week, or even a month Abalone Bay awaits to serve as your muse. You’ll be able to write away in nearly any corner of Abalone Bay. Our Wi-Fi connection is strong, fast, and has been tested to work outside our house as well as inside.  Our decks have electrical outlets so your laptop will never be without power. And if you like to spread out while writing, our dining room table expands to fill up the room.

Outline Your Schedule

Now that you have booked your stay, outline your writing agenda. Whether loosely sketched or measured to the minute, a schedule can help you maintain or regain structure in your day to assure you don’t get lost in Abalone Bay’s surroundings. Here at Sea Ranch your usual distractions will be gone. But do be warned the deer grazing in the back, the blue heron peeking in the window, the bobcat looking for a gopher snack, the horse riders on the trail, the whales spouting off in the ocean’s distance can readily replace those mundane nuisances.  Your schedule will be your guide to getting back on track.

Allow for Free Time

writer's retreat, Bike Rentals, bike riding in sea ranch

Allow for free time, getting lost in time, and dreaming time too. Surprise and serendipity can also become your muse. Be ready to let Sea Ranch’s surprises stimulate your creativity.  Rent a bicycle and tour the miles of trails keeping your mind open ready to capture the inspiration caused by watching the flock of turkeys making their way along the roadside. As the sun dips below the horizon, allow its golden hues mixed with red flares of color ignite your mind in your creative project’s process.

Celebrate Your Accomplishments

Guest Book, Sea Ranch ,Abalone Bay

Even if you didn’t get the first couplet to rhyme, let alone make it to the last period in the last chapter of the next great novel allow yourself to exhale to relish the time you took for your retreat. It was a retreat after all and most likely it has helped you move to a much better spot in your creative life than you were at your trip’s outset. Don’t beat yourself up at not making all your goals. Rather embrace your new found zen, bringing it back home with you to help take you to completion of your writing project.

Who knows just jotting your comments in our guest book may be enough to break that writer’s block of yours.

And don’t forget–Book your NEXT Writer’s Retreat

Yes, you do deserve it! The return back to your daily grind can offer up plenty of excuses for delaying a return retreat. Without booking your stay how will reconnect with your muse at Sea Ranch?  Take note of what worked while on your retreat and what needs to be changed for improved productivity.  Then put your next writer retreat on the calendar to help keep your momentum going. How about next weekend!  Your muse awaits!

And now for pros well versed in writers retreats…

Do you have other suggestions for developing a perfect writer’s retreat? What were your best writers retreat? If you shared your retreat with others how did they inspire and inform you? And if you spent time alone we’d love to hear how that went.

Join authors Dr. Gerard Collins and Janie Simpson this summer for a focused writing retreat in the East Coast Maritimes from July 7-14, 2024. We’ll spend eight days at the St. Martins Country Inn,  booked for our writers’ exclusive use.

writers retreat east coast

Having private use of the historic estate will allow us to settle in quickly, and the genuine Maritime hospitality encourages a creative atmosphere that’s naturally conducive to writing, relaxing, and inspiring conversations.

For this entire week in St. Martins, you can write every day and live life to the fullest, all while your mind, body, and soul rest for a while. In the Maritimes, the concept of giving it all up and heading somewhere nice for a wee bit is about as good as life gets—exactly what we’re offering with this retreat in which the only drama permitted will be what comes out in your writing or is conjured up by the wild Atlantic Ocean, in concert with spectacular sunsets and rugged hills.

As a Go and Write! participant, your only job is to focus on your writing, absorb the peaceful atmosphere of New Brunswick, and make memories to weave into your storytelling once you’re back home. Our job is to create the conditions that will help you reach these goals.

About your hosts

Gerard Collins, PhD, Go and Write writer in residence and workshop leader.

A note from a recent retreat participant

“It is not an exaggeration to say this retreat changed my life! I have been struggling for years to finish a personal memoir draft. Just a few days on our retreat, and my writing and I turned a corner. I had the breakthrough that had eluded me for years. The combination of Gerard’s insightful guidance, the support of the other writers who became instant soulmates, and the Irish tradition of storytelling in an 18th century castle proved to be life-changing.

“I am close to finishing my memoir draft, and I give all credit to  Go and Write!  for providing the environment that enabled me to write and organize my thoughts. I have opened myself up to the possibilities ahead, and I’m feeling better about my writing than I have in years.

“My deepest thanks to Gerard and Jane…”

~ Gloria R.B.,  Go and Write!  alumnus

A New Brunswick renaissance

Just as impressive as the landscape and geography are the accomplishments of artists in the province as New Brunswick arts and culture in the early 21st century is enjoying a rebirth.

The capital city of Fredericton has a long history with artistic achievement, and the Miramichi region has been celebrated in literature and song for decades. Now, southern New Brunswick—places like Alma, Saint John, St. Martins, and Sussex’s AX Arts and Culture Centre (Janie was the founding Executive and Artistic Director there)—are joining the fray, becoming a haven for writers, photographers, musicians and visual artists. The regional identity of farming, lumbering, and fishing folk has expanded to include the arts as a feasible, respected way of life in rural areas.

writers retreat east coast

The literary history of New Brunswick, which is rooted in poets such as Charles G.D. Roberts and his cousin Bliss Carman, has grown with the likes of Alden Nowlan and Northrup Frye, and flourished under present-day poets Allan Cooper, Sue Sinclair, Jennifer Houle, M. Travis Lane, Lynn Davies, and Michael Pacey. Novelist David Adams Richards stands tall as the most renowned of today’s New Brunswick writers, but a plethora of others also stand out, from Beth Powning and Sheree Fitch to Riel Nason, Carla Gunn, and our own Gerard Collins and Janie Simpson.

The singers and songwriters of New Brunswick raise their voices in the forms of Stompin’ Tom Connor, Measha Brueggergosman-Lee, Roch Voisine, Jeremy Dutcher, and Brent Mason, who have stamped their indelible image on the musical landscape of the region and the country.

writers retreat east coast

These days, the path for the arts in New Brunswick is clear: there’s something in the water and the land that makes this area unique, and the literature and arts are not only rising to the occasion but are showing the way.

We couldn’t possibly highlight all of those who have helped shape the New Brunswick arts scene over the years, but we hope we’ve given you a small taste of those who’ve contributed to the overall artistic landscape of the province.

St. Martins Country Inn, built in the mid-1800s

writers retreat east coast

St. Martins Country Inn, our home for a full week this July, is a testament to the wooden shipbuilding history that made the village what it is today. The historic home, which we’ll have all to ourselves, was built in the mid-1800s by David and Rachel Vaughan, a prominent shipbuilding family in the area.

The Inn is situated in the quieter part of this already serene village, and is directly across the road from the iconic Bay of Fundy.

Participants

Go and Write! retreat participants range from beginning writers who want to start jotting down their thoughts, to experienced writers who’ve published extensively. Previous attendees include playwrights, poets, novelists, television producers, short story and memoir writers, and everything in between.

Writers can register as individual participants or bring someone to share their room and costs. This second person can also be a non-writing spouse or guest, and some bedrooms are equipped with two beds. We do not pair strangers on our retreats, and numbers will be limited to approximately 16 participants on this writing retreat to allow for a more intimate, connected, and focused experience.

We often have non-writers join us on retreats, and they’re welcome to participate in as few or as many of the writing activities as they wish. These folks are invited to join us for all of the meals, readings, and any outings that are part of the program, as these elements are included in everyone’s registration.

There are several common living and sitting rooms in the inn, and there’s a collective energy that permeates these spaces when like-minded souls are quietly focused on creating.

writers retreat east coast

We will host private group readings on some evenings throughout the retreat, where you’ll have the chance to share your writing with your fellow participants, if you like—without pressure.

We will also have two group writing sessions guided by Gerard, an award-winning author and university educator, and each participant will have two one-on-one chats with Gerard as well, where you’ll have the opportunity to talk with him about your writing projects, goals, and challenges.

Breakfast each morning is included in your registration, and we’ll also have five group suppers during our week-long stay.

Rooms at the St. Martins Country Inn—upgrades available

All of the rooms at the inn are lovely, roomy, and tastefully decorated, in keeping with the historic nature of this fine country house, and each room is equipped with a table and chair suitable for writing.

There are inexpensive room upgrades available at the St. Martins Country Inn for those who wish to have additional luxuries and space for our 8-day stay, and rooms will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Below, we have incorporated some photos and general room descriptions from the inn’s website.

Welcome to the Village of St. Martins, on Canada’s East Coast

writers retreat east coast

The average temperature in St. Martins in July is about 20°Celsius, or 68°Fahrenheit—the breeze off the Bay of Fundy keeps things cooler in the heat of summer, and sometimes there’s fog, too, which adds an air of mystery to the village and beaches and often burns off by lunchtime. As with any East Coast region, it’s a good idea to think in layers!

Take a walk on the wild side—things to do in St. Martins

St. Martins is home to not just one, but two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In fact, a short walk from our historic inn, you’ll find the St. Martins sea caves , the only place in Canada where it’s possible to stand in a UNESCO biosphere and a UNESCO geopark at the same time.

You can wander right in when the tide goes out about a half kilometre—just be sure and return home before the tide does! As long as you pay attention to the turn of the tide, you can walk along the ocean’s hard-packed floor where only minutes ago, the sea had resided.

writers retreat east coast

If you think you might want to explore the St. Martins Sea Caves from the water, the folks at Bay of Fundy Adventures (formerly Red Rock Adventure) offer guided kayaking tours, and when you wrap up your adventure, you can check out the Shipyard Café with its indoor and outdoor seating, coffee, organic tea, and baked goods—a great place to capture your thoughts.

writers retreat east coast

And when it’s time for a rest, you can just sit on the beach and take it all in, watch as kayakers paddle by, clouds and seagulls drift across the sky, and the sun glints on the crests of waves. Maybe the fog rolls in—in fact, some days, the fog definitely rolls in—and washes out the world’s rough edges, wrapping you within a virtual cocoon.

If you’re looking for more information about the UNESCO designated region or want to do a deep-dive into the village’s wooden shipbuilding history, you’ll want to check out the Quaco Museum, which happens to be located just down the road from the St. Martins Country Inn. The origin of the name ‘ Quaco ’ is from the Mi’gmaq language and is spelled Goolwagagek, meaning ‘haunt of the hooded seal’.

writers retreat east coast

All that, and covered bridges—two! New Brunswick is home to nearly 60 covered bridges, two of which happen to be in St. Martins. These bridges—once known as “kissing bridges” for the privacy they offered young couples in horse-drawn carriages as they crossed from one side to the other—harken back to a simpler time in rural Canada, even though the bridges are still in full use.

writers retreat east coast

A covered bridge, according to the province’s tourism bureau, is a “timber-truss bridge with a roof and siding. These coverings extend the bridge’s lifespan by shielding it form the worst the Canadian winter can throw at it,” and were once an integral part of the fabric of daily New Brunswick life. The village of St. Martins is home to the province’s newest bridge, the only double-barrelled covered bridge in New Brunswick and one of a few in North America.

Meals in St. Martins

writers retreat east coast

While the group will enjoy all of our breakfasts and five delicious suppers at our venue, we also like to build in room for writers to experience lunches and suppers solo, too. This freedom allows you to wander the village and enjoy an introspective meal on your own—we tend to do a lot of our own writing in pubs and cafés, and enjoy being lost in the anonymity.

With a population of 320 souls (up from only 276 people in 2016), the village of St. Martins is thriving these days, mostly thanks to tourism, but it’s also become a haven for artist types, including prominent photographers, painters, and writers.

The influx of creatives to the region explains the appearance of some new shops and watering holes such as Old Molly’s Bar , right across the street from our venue and named after Steam Engine #1 (nicknamed Old Molly), that ran from the village of St. Martins to Hampton. The bar is located in the former residence of one of Old Molly’s conductors.

writers retreat east coast

We visited Old Molly’s last summer and were impressed with their charcuterie boards which feature locally-sourced foods like New Brunswick smoked salmon and Acadian sturgeon, smoked brisket, pepperoni, and sausage, as well as a wide selection of cheeses from New Brunswick dairy shops, such as Edam, peppercorn gouda, tonne, havarti, curds, and smoked cheddar. They also have a great selection of local craft beers, ciders, and wines, as well as non-alcoholic drinks and mock-tails. And fresh New Brunswick oysters!

A bit farther down the road is Spinney’s Seafood Market , known throughout the province as home to some of the best lobster rolls you’ll ever have the privilege of tasting.

Then there’s The Caves restaurant, with their “World Famous Chowder,” great Greek and Caesar salads, homemade soups, and an unmatched view of—you guessed it—the St. Martins sea caves, either from the patio or inside the restaurant.

Exploring New Brunswick

We couldn’t bring you to New Brunswick without showing you some of what our province has to offer, so we’ve arranged for two day trips: one closer to home so you can get a more complete feel for the Fundy coastline, and on another day, we’ll head inland to a living museum along the Wolastoq river .

Day Trip #1: The Fundy Trail Parkway

writers retreat east coast

After we’ve had three days focused on our writing, we’ll board our private coach for a ride up the Fundy Trail Parkway so you can view the ocean, trees, and winding roads from a whole other perspective. The Fundy Trail is one of the last remaining coastal wilderness areas between Florida and Labrador. Besides being part of two UNESCO designated sites, the Fundy Trail marks the beginning of the “Fundy Footpath,” one of the top 50 hiking trails in the world.

writers retreat east coast

There will be several opportunities to capture some incredible scenery of this rural paradise from the multiple observation decks and lookouts along the way. On this excursion, we’ll discover many of New Brunswick’s most spectacular sights, including beaches, forests, mountains, and waterfalls, and immerse ourselves increasingly into the New Brunswick lifestyle, which means a slower pace than what most of the Western world is used to.

Later that afternoon, we’ll return for supper followed by our own private Maritime kitchen party with a band called “The Seven-90s”, a group of musicians who play a mix of Irish, Celtic, and Maritime music.

Day Trip #2: Kings Landing Historical Settlement

writers retreat east coast

We’ll take a day to leave the village of St. Martins and explore the interior of the province, where we’ll find ourselves at a 19th century historical re-enactment village—a living museum—called Kings Landing Historical Settlement . You’ll step back over 200 years into New Brunswick’s past, where you can talk with costumed interpreters in the more than 70 historic buildings about what 19th century life was like in rural New Brunswick.

At Kings Landing, you can wander at your leisure around the “town,” which includes an old-fashioned schoolhouse (think Little House on the Prairie , Maritime-style!), a blacksmith’s forge, a working sawmill, and a print shop.

writers retreat east coast

Wandering throughout the site, you can drop in to see the “neighbours” who, depending on the weather, will be cooking meals in their open hearths, caring for their farm animals, or tending the gorgeous flower and vegetable gardens. They’ll tell you all about their chores and answer any questions you might have about their daily lives.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Kings Landing (@kingslandingnb)

There’s even the possibility of some traditional music from a wandering minstrel!

If you’re tired of walking, or you just feeling like something different, all you have to do is wait at strategic points around the village and you’ll be able to catch a ride in a horse-drawn carriage, free of charge and first-come, first-serve, and travel in style around the dirt roads of the village.

writers retreat east coast

You can stop by the old mill, and, of course, stop for a hearty meal and a drink at the onsite restaurant, The King’s Head Inn, where you can select from traditional or modern fare.

writers retreat east coast

If you’re feeling inspired, you might take out your journal and ruminate on the village, any characters you’ve met, or life in 1800s New Brunswick. While you dine or write, or both, you might order a Simeon Jones ale, named after a former brewmaster and mayor of Saint John in the 1880s, whose home was moved to Kings Landing, stone by stone, in the 1960s.

writers retreat east coast

Your mind and heart will be full after a day at this meticulous, living historic village that not only captures the essence of life long ago in a colonial community, but also offers a peaceful respite from the busyness of the modern world.

Re-entry into contemporary surroundings would be a bit jolting except, when the day is done, we’ll find ourselves back in the seaside village of St. Martins where we’ll settle in for supper and readings, music, or quiet conversation (depending on the mood) at our own 19th century inn by the ocean as the sun goes down and the soft lights of evening blink on.

Take some time this summer to devote yourself to writing

As writers, ourselves, we get it—it can be tough to find time to write. But that’s what’s so great about our writing retreats, and why our itinerary only has two day trips to explore the region: besides those two days—which will provide inspiration and allow you to get a real taste of New Brunswick—the rest of the time is spent focused on writing.

We’ll have two group writing sessions led by Gerard, and you’ll have two opportunities to discuss your work in progress and writing goals and challenges with him.

Writers appreciate the stimulation that comes from outstanding experiences, but we also need time to rest and think about it all, put distractions away and settle down to some serious writing.

Join us in New Brunswick for a week this summer to experience a writing retreat that combines a little bit of touring with a whole lot of writing.

writers retreat east coast

All told, New Brunswick is the perfect place to find yourself in mid-summer as you seek solitude and respite from the world, and a sense of quiet and well-being you’ll find in few other places. There’s something different here in the big, blue sky and the surrounding oceans and forests that allows a person to breathe, to remember why you’re here, and to feel like your true self.

Nothing less than authenticity—that’s what you’ll find here in our home province. And if that leads you to write, then don’t say we didn’t warn you. You might find yourself wanting to come back over and over because, if there’s one thing we’ve learned over the past few years, when a writer finds a good place to write, it’s always best to go back there whenever you can. As any writer will tell you, in such places is where the magic dwells.

  • 7 nights at St. Martins Country Inn with private bedroom/bathroom

  • Non-writing participants are welcome to take part in as few or as many of the elements of the retreat as they wish
  • Ample time and opportunity for writing, idea-gathering, and solitude

A major difference between  Go and Write! and most travel companies or writing retreats is the personalized aspect of our tours. We ensure there’s both social time and alone time built into the itinerary, as well as plenty of time for wandering and gathering thoughts in a solitary fashion. We encourage writers to give each other space, although social time is also guaranteed, if that’s what you’d like. Note, also, that we don’t compel strangers to share a room as most writers prefer solitude or, at most, the company of a friend or family member of their own choosing.

In all, we pride ourselves on being open and inclusive and, being writers ourselves first and foremost, we imagine the best writing retreat possible and try our best to deliver on that ideal.

Kind words from one of our 2022 retreat participants:

“I am beginning to reflect on the joy the trip has brought me… The tenderness and care you showed us was so evident in the choices of lodging, the comfortable bus rides, and the knowledgeable guides. It was your day-to-day presence, while checking on all of us, that was especially meaningful. I am not certain I can explain the impact, but I feel it has awakened a longing in me and an understanding of something deeper that was not previously there.” ~ Ann K.,  Go and Write!  alumnus

For those who are flying, the closest airport is the Saint John Airport, approximately a half hour (0.5 hrs) away from St. Martins. Note :  Saint John Airport (YSJ) is NOT to be confused with the St. John’s Airport in Newfoundland—a lovely spot, to be sure, and Gerard’s hometown where we plan to host a retreat in 2025, but not where we’re hosting this retreat :-).

Airports and approximate distance to the St. Martins Country Inn Saint John Airport: 0.5 hour Moncton Airport: 1.5 hours Fredericton Airport: 1.45 hours Bangor Airport: 3.45 hours

Island Scribe

Writing retreats.

New dates! July 15 - 20, 2024.

An Invitation

Island Scribe is a destination writing retreat in the Caribbean curated for Black and women of colour writers.

Writing is an act of liberation. It draws from our deepest selves, craves attention, requires vulnerability and grace.

This is why we believe in the Island Scribe ethos:

  • Reflect: Be curious about the writer you are and the stories you must tell.
  • Rejuvenate: Refresh your creative practice with moments of joy.
  • Write: Find flow and focus in a community curated just for you.

We believe in creating spaces where women writers of colour are truly free to discover their craft. Our retreats honour these writers, their lived experiences, and their practices, by centering them and their stories.

Have a project waiting to be liberated?

Bring your story and come.

Audre Lorde. Paule Marshall. Jamaica Kincaid. Merle Collins. Dionne Brand. Edwidge Danticat. These Black women writers have forged new literary landscapes and set the world ablaze with stories born out of the same muse. The Caribbean.

Steeped in language, image, rhythm, and folklore, the literary tradition of the Caribbean and its diaspora is vast, varied, and vibrant. While the region continues to captivate with its geography, it is not to be reduced to this single story.

An Island Scribe Writing Retreat

Bring your story and come

Imagine: starting your day mindfully, meditating to nature or moving your body; writing from a studio, nestled between the foothills of the rainforest and the Caribbean Sea; nourishing your mind and body with local culinary delights; resting in treehouse-styled eco lodges; supporting a local economy where sustainability matters. These are examples of the experiences that await you on an Island Scribe writing retreat.

Your 2024 muse is Dominica. Write from Calibishie on Dominica’s stunning North-East coast, from July 15 to July 20, 2024.

Explore Writing Packages

Meet yourself rising with the sun over the sea before you set an intention for the day. Be nourished throughout the day by wholesome food prepared by local chefs. Feed your curiosity and be inspired with an occasional excursion beyond your island writing studio. Do all of this as you attend to your craft at your pace from the comfort of your well-appointed room (or the beach), knowing that you are in a writing community where you belong.

Each Island Scribe writing retreat is as unique as the islands we visit.

Packages below are a sample of what we offer.

Kiskadee Flow is designed to support writers who are building or experimenting with their practice and/or craft. Scarlet Ibis Focus provides writers who are established in their practice time, space, and care to attend to their craft.

What is an Island Scribe writing retreat?

Island Scribe writing retreats offer a joyful combination of rest, reflection, and rejuvenation.

We believe that all three serve the reason we are gathering as a community: to write.

And best of all, you get to attend to your craft with a beautiful, off the beaten path, Caribbean location as your backdrop. Our writing retreats include time to explore the island on your own and on a tour.*

So leave the concerns of your day-to-day needs behind, find a soft place to land with a lightly scheduled daily routine, and dream up the stories you were born to tell.

* The island tour may include time in a boat or driving by bus. Do consider this before booking or get in touch, if you have questions .

What will my days at the writing retreat look like?

Your schedule will look different depending on your location, package, and writing needs, but here is a sample day:

7:30 Breakfast 9:00 Yoga 10:00 Writing 1:00 Lunch 2:00 Writing 6:00 Reflection and Sharing 7:00 Dinner

Free time for activities such as a dip in the ocean or a village walk is available at your discretion.

One day of the writing retreat is reserved for a group activity on the island.

Will my writing be workshopped?

No. However, you are encouraged to share your work when we come together in the evenings for group reflection before dinner.

All writers will be invited to read before our final dinner together on Day 5. Think of this as a gift to your future writer self and your writing community.

How many writers will be at the retreat?

Our writing retreats are intimate and we offer 6 – 10 spots, depending on the location.

Are flights to the writing retreat included?

No. You are responsible for your own flight costs.

I really want to do the retreat, but I can't pay the full amount immediately, what are my options?

We totally understand that everyone has different financial situations. We want to make this opportunity for you to invest in yourself and your writing as attainable as possible.

We offer two payment options:

  • Full payment – Rest knowing that you’ve made your investment and now it’s time to plan and prepare.
  • Multi-payment plan – Spread the cost over multiple months. After providing a downpayment to secure your registration, the remaining balance will be divided into equal monthly payments.

Your total payments must be received no later than 2 months prior to your retreat start date.

Please note that registration is only considered complete after receipt of either the full payment or the initial downpayment.

What if I need to cancel?

The retreat is refundable up to 24 hours after your initial payment, less any processing fees.

After 24 hours, if you cancel, you are eligible for a credit towards any future retreat that is open for registration for up to 12 months.

No credit or refund is available within 65 days prior to the retreat. No credit or refund is available if you do not attend the retreat, arrive late or leave early.

Any cancellations after the initial 24-hour period are subject to a non-refundable fee of USD $150.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will receive a suggested packing list when you book, but here are some recommendations:

  • Flight itinerary
  • Credit/Bank cards
  • Travel Insurance documents
  • Plug adapter (if applicable)
  • Small, day bag
  • Sunblock and a hat
  • Bug and mosquito repellant
  • Light, comfortable clothing
  • Yoga clothing (as needed)
  • Flip flops/sandals
  • Water-ready shoes
  • Comfortable walking shoes/sneakers
  • Medications

And, of course, your writing materials!

Who can I bring with me on the retreat?

Another woman of colour writer!

Island Scribe is dedicated to creating welcoming writing spaces for those who identify as women of colour. This is an adult-only retreat. As such, non-writers, non-people of colour, people who identify as men, and children are not included in these spaces unless expressly invited.

What if I have special health concerns and mobility issues?

In order for us to know if we can accommodate your needs, please send us a note at [email protected] . Only share what you’re comfortable sharing.

We are working towards offering a variety of accessible options in our inventory.

What if I have food allergies or sensitivities?

If you have any food allergies and sensitivities (peanuts, soy, dairy, etc.), please let us know immediately  after booking. It is your responsibility to provide this information to us as soon as possible so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

We still recommend taking the added self-care responsibility of reconfirming during meals that ingredients that you are allergic or sensitive to have not been used. Human error does occur, so please always re-confirm and be aware for your own well-being.

How do I get to and from the retreat and the airport?

Good news! Airport transfers are included in all packages. Transportation will be provided to get you to the retreat from the airport upon arrival, and back to the airport on departure.

You will need to provide your arrival and departure details ahead of time so that we may book these transfers for you.

If other writers are arriving or leaving at the same time, transportation may be shared.

Is there WI-FI?

Yes, free Wi-Fi is available throughout the retreat, including in your accommodation. However, we do hope that you will take this retreat as an opportunity to disconnect.

How do I contact you with additional questions?

You can contact us via [email protected] .

The Confirmation I Never Knew I Needed

Island Scribe was the confirmation I never knew I needed that I was on the right track. Being in a beautiful locale where my only focus was writing was gamechanging. Being among likeminded writers who are all so brilliant in their own ways was comforting. Being led by Simone was fulfilling and nothing short of an honour. I was able to focus on my creative output in a way I hadn’t before, and I’m eternally grateful for what this experience has done for me as a writer and a woman.

A Transformative Experience

This was a transformative experience for me as a Black Caribbean writer in the diaspora. I’ve felt very disconnected from the region where my story and my heart live. Having the space to build community, to rest and create, is exactly what I needed. I’m deeply grateful for this.

– Kari Cobham, journalist and author (USA/Trinidad)

One of the Most Generous Gifts I've Given Myself

I sincerely believe that this retreat has been one of the most generous gifts I’ve given myself, as a writer, but as a human being. It was a gift in that it was a blessing. I also think that all women of colour writers deserve this experience, should have access to this kind of sacred time and community.

The retreat emphasizes being in the present moment through dedicated writing time, yoga, and communing in the ocean and the neighbouring waterfalls. At the same time, the retreat challenged me to be forward-looking. To imagine what is possible not just in a week, but in a lifetime of learning and dedication to a writing practice.

I Felt Safe, Considered...Taken Care Of

I really enjoyed attending a retreat that gave me time to write as well as showed me around the islands. I felt safe, considered, and taken care of.

I Spent a Lot of Time Thinking About the [Writing] Process

I spent a lot of time thinking about the process actually, that’s probably what I reflected on the most. You know, what is my process for going to the page and starting my writing. Thinking a lot about the mantra. Not just saying a mantra or doing a mantra but thinking about how my writing day should start. Or how I want to think about myself as I go towards my writing.

– Jael Richardson, author, founder and festival director (Canada)

Nature Here is Rejuvenating

…the nature here is rejuvenating. After lunch, we got caught in a storm and I remember looking down and there were thousands of dime-sized frogs, just leaping from our shoes, trying to get out of the way. Or, thousands of snails, just clinging to rocks at the waterfall. Being pushed over by the sea. You know, eating mangoes and losing the skin in the water. That kind of thing rejuvenated me. I’m in the city … you know, running down concrete, trying to make sure I make deadlines all the time. I haven’t had the chance to just listen to nature’s roar.

– Jacquinn Sinclair (USA)

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

An Overview of the IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to measure English proficiency for educational, vocational and immigration purposes. The IELTS measures an individual's ability to communicate in English across four areas of language: listening , reading , writing and speaking . The IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment at over 1,100 test centres and 140 countries. These test centres supervise the local administration of the test and recruit, train and monitor IELTS examiners.

IELTS tests are available on 48 fixed dates each year, usually Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays, and may be offered up to four times a month at any test centre, including Elektrostal' depending on local needs. Go to IELTS test locations to find a test centre in or nearby Elektrostal' and to check for upcoming test dates at your test centre.

Test results are available online 13 days after your test date. You can either receive your Test Report Form by post or collect it from the Test Centre. You will normally only receive one copy of the Test Report Form, though you may ask for a second copy if you are applying to the UK or Canada for immigration purposes - be sure to specify this when you register for IELTS. You may ask for up to 5 copies of your Test Report Form to be sent directly to other organisations, such as universities.

There are no restrictions on re-sitting the IELTS. However, you would need to allow sufficient time to complete the registration procedures again and find a suitable test date.

The reading, writing and listening practice tests on this website have been designed to resemble the format of the IELTS test as closely as possible. They are not, however, real IELTS tests; they are designed to practise exam technique to help students to face the IELTS test with confidence and to perform to the best of their ability.
