Today we face a time when as many as ten million new teachers are entering the profession. It is for these teachers, and others who are unfamiliar with writing workshop, that Ralph Fletcher and JoAnn Portalupi wrote this book—as a way to introduce and explain the writing workshop . . . to reveal what a potent tool the writing workshop can be for empowering young writers.

Above all Writing Workshop is a practical book, providing everything a teacher needs to get the writing workshop up and running. In clear language, Fletcher and Portalupi explain the simple principles that underlie the writing workshop and explore the major components that make it work. Each chapter addresses an essential element, then suggests five or six specific things a teacher can do to implement the idea under discussion. There's also a separate chapter entitled "What About Skills," which shows how to effectively teach skills in the context of writing. The book closes with practical forms in the appendixes to ensure that the workshop runs smoothly.

Fletcher and Portalupi's twenty-plus years working with teachers have convinced them that there is no better way to teach writing. This important book is the culmination of all their years of effort, a synthesis of their best thinking on the subject.

(click any section below to continue reading)

Instead of trying to write an encyclopedic, everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know book about writing workshop, we have worked hard to boil the subject down to the essentials. We wove in theory when it seemed appropriate to explain the roots of a particular idea. But we kept our focus on writing the practical book that would clearly show how any teacher could implement this approach.

In the first short chapter, we bring in several different examples to give you the feel of a writing workshop. After that we slow the book down and provide chapters that give an in-depth look at particular aspects of the workshop – time and space, writing conferences, the writing cycle, and so forth.

It is instructive to take apart a watch and closely examine all those shiny gears and springs. But there is always the danger that you’ll never be able to get all the pieces back together again. Our goal is to leave you with a sense of the writing workshop in its entirety, ticking, humming.

The writing workshop is not foolproof. Unless you are very luck, chances are you will run into particular bogs or glitches as you get started. We troubleshoot these potential potholes in Chapter 10. The Appendixes consist of a number of practical forms and other resources that we have found useful in making the workshop run smoothly.

Is this book “workshop in a box”? Yes and no. We have tried to provide the most important tools you’ll need to get your workshop up and running. But there are a few ingredients we cannot provide, and the most important one of these is you, the teacher. Your passion, patience, humor, your faith in the writers you work with, will be crucial to making your writing workshop come alive.

Writing is tremendously important. Every one of our students will need to travel down the long road of written communication as we enter the twenty-first century. Our twenty-plus years of working with teachers has convinced us that the writing workshop gives our students the very best tools to move confidently down that road. This book is the culmination of our efforts, a synthesis of our best thinking on this idea. We invite you to travel down the road with us as we explore together a potent tool for empowering young writers.

Scribophile played a major part in helping me polish my novel for submission. I learnt a huge amount from critiquing other people’s work, as well as from reading critiques of mine. Giving and receiving critiques on Scribophile made a big difference to the quality of my writing. I learned how to write a query letter here and that led to an agent and a book deal. Ruth Lauren Prisoner of Ice and Snow and others published with Bloomsbury

My years on Scribophile have given me a master’s level education in writing. The critiques are great, but I’ve learned as much from reading and analyzing other writers on Scribophile. Scribe’s Book Writing Workshop for Nonfiction Authors

writers workshop books

I’ve been to some of the best book writing workshops in the world, and also some of the worst.

The worst are glorified sales pitches; “free” writers workshops put on by coaches or publishing companies who want to sell you something.

The best workshops, on the other hand, offer experiences that can change your life. They provide expert guidance to overcome the fears and obstacles that every first-time Author faces :

  • Feeling overwhelmed by the scope of the project.
  • Not knowing where to start.
  • Feeling alone in the process.

Most importantly, the best workshops get you results . They give you a foundation and set you on a path to not just write your book, but publish it, too.

Choosing the right workshop for you depends on your goals. If you just want to have fun and explore book writing, go to a local $300 workshop first because it’s low risk and an easy way to start.

But if you’re committed to both writing and publishing, you should choose a workshop with a proven track record of helping writers become published Authors.

This is what we’ve developed at Scribe—a nonfiction book writing workshop for professionals who want the best guidance in the world on writing and self-publishing .

In this post, I cover:

  • The key difference between Scribe’s workshop and other book writing workshops.
  • The immense ongoing support that makes it more than just a workshop (including weekly group coaching calls and quarterly masterclasses with me).
  • The 3-day agenda and breakdown for how we run our workshops.

With Scribe’s book writing workshop, as long as you do exactly what we tell you to do, you’ll finish your book . We can guarantee this because we have a proven process that’s guided thousands of Authors from idea to published book.

As you’ll learn below, the workshop we offer is a part of our Guided Author Program , which involves group coaching and other forms of ongoing support after the workshop finishes. Click here to learn more, or schedule a consult to connect on a call with our team.

What Differentiates Scribe’s Book Writing Workshop?

Typical book writing workshops are primarily tactical. They consist of a variety of lectures and writing exercises that provide Authors with the information they need to write a book.

But let’s be honest— information isn’t the real reason people attend a book writing workshop . There are hundreds of blog posts on how to write a book or improve at the craft of writing.

We’ve published a 500+ page book on writing and publishing called The Scribe Method that anyone can read. And we’ve also made our online course, Scribe Book School , completely free for anyone who wants all the information necessary to write a book.

The real reason people attend book writing workshops (whether they acknowledge it or not) is to get the emotional support and accountability that’s needed in the book writing process.

They want the opportunity to join a community of writers and book coaches who will:

  • Keep them accountable.
  • Help them feel less alone on the journey.
  • Support and push them to actually finish and publish their book.

Because writing a book isn’t just a tactical endeavor. It’s a deeply emotional one, too.

In Scribe workshops, of course we give you strategic, actionable advice on the process of writing a book.

But we don’t just help you learn to write or sort your concepts into a book. We help you learn to work through the struggle of the creative process .

We do this by helping you focus on the specific value you’re delivering to your readers. When you focus on the change you can make in their lives, it makes your book about a purpose bigger than you.

And that is what gives you the motivation to keep going when it’s hard.

The vast majority of writing workshops and coaches fail for this exact reason—they only give information, and they don’t address the emotional issues that surround writing a book.

Beyond Just a Workshop: The Ongoing Support Offered to Every Participant

Let’s face it—you aren’t going to finish your book during a workshop. You’re typically just getting started or right in the middle of it (if anyone tells you that you can “write a bestseller in a weekend” they are a fraud out to scam you).

Without ongoing support once it ends, you’re far less likely to ever finish your book, let alone publish it.

At Scribe, we provide a level of ongoing support that far exceeds your typical book writing workshop. After our workshop ends, you get access to:

  • Weekly Group Coaching Calls
  • Quarterly Masterclasses
  • An Active Community of Writers
  • Three 1-on-1 Calls with Your Editor

Below I’ll explain how each of these work.

1. Weekly Group Coaching Calls

Scribe Media's book writing workshop Zoom call

Following your workshop, you’ll be invited to join a weekly group coaching call with our senior book coaches.

They’ll help you and your peers work through obstacles you encounter while writing your book. You can get personalized feedback on the challenges you’re facing and also learn from the challenges your peers are working through.

For example, one of our Authors was trying to sort through a manuscript he’d written that clocked in at over 200,000 words. He sent a chapter to an editor who instantly saw the problem: he was trying to pack too many promises into one chapter.

The editor challenged him to zoom all the way out to identify the transformation he was promising his reader in the book—and then break down that transformation into one specific promise he would deliver per chapter.

In one 30 minute call, the Author got an immense amount of clarity. He finally understood how to revise his chapters and cut the mountain of material in front of him down to a cohesive, well-structured manuscript.

We see these types of breakthroughs happening every week for our Authors. And the weekly cadence works as a form of accountability to help them make consistent progress.

2. Quarterly Masterclasses with a 4x New York Times Best-Selling Author

Each quarter, you’ll be invited to attend a masterclass taught by me. I host them online via Zoom, so you can attend from anywhere in the world.

I cover topics that range from book marketing to published Author AMAs to the fears that stop Authors in their tracks.

The masterclasses are 1 hour long, with special guests who share their wisdom and always open the floor to Q&A.

Those who attend come away with a balanced perspective of what the Author journey entails. That way, when they hit the highs and inevitable lows, they know they’re not alone—and they know how others have made their way to become successful Authors.

3. Become a Member of Our Exclusive Writing Community

In addition to weekly group coaching calls and quarterly masterclasses, you also receive access to a private online community that includes me, the Scribe editors from your workshop, and your peers.

Our community has created a culture of camaraderie and support that provides motivation and inspiration for each other.

Authors share their creative battles and also the moments that drive them to keep pushing:

Retail Pride: A post from the Scribe Guided Author community

Book writing— as I’ll discuss more below —is an emotional journey.

Authors find the support found in our community to be invaluable as they navigate the ups and downs of the process.

4. Three 1-on-1 Calls with Your Editor

While our weekly coaching calls give Authors a forum to ask questions and learn from each other, we also provide 3 individual coaching sessions with an editor. This allows the Author to get specific feedback on the direction of their work.

Before each session, Authors send their editor the work they’d like reviewed. It can range from structural content (such as their positioning and outline) to sections of their manuscript (such as a chapter they’ve written).

In this one-on-one setting, editors can leave specific, actionable advice directly on the Author’s work, including global notes to amplify the quality of their entire manuscript.

Authors then get personal time on the call to ask questions and ensure they have a solid plan for moving forward.

How It Works: The 3-Day Agenda of Our Book Writing Workshop

In most book writing workshops, the work doesn’t begin until you arrive. There aren’t specific exercises to complete beforehand or materials you’re meant to show up with.

And as a result, it takes longer to reach a stage where critiquing and real feedback begin.

With our workshop, your work begins before it even starts.

We have you review a set of teaching videos from Scribe Book School and fill out a book positioning template (outlining your objectives, audience, and book idea).

This way, you’ve already begun to think about your book, and you show up with material that our coaches can work with to help you find holes, think through different angles, and improve what you’ve already created—right from the start.

This format increases productivity during the workshop and ensures that Authors leave with actionable feedback.

Note: We have an hour each day of the workshop devoted to 1-1 editor consultations, so you can continue to get personalized feedback on your work and further develop your outline.

The 3-day agenda of our workshop goes like this:

We kick off by talking about Author psychology and the shift in identity that takes place when you decide to write a book.

This is because, for many Authors, the battle with Imposter Syndrome either has already begun or will soon. By addressing the identity shift around becoming an Author from the start, we help our Authors know what’s coming and how to deal with it when it does.

Then, we spend the rest of the day in small groups, each led by a senior editor, where we workshop the book positioning doc that you and your peers have drafted.

Positioning is the most important part of your book and your answer to the question that every reader asks:

Why should I read this book?

Failing to define this early on in the book writing process is one of the mistakes that leads new Authors to experience writer’s block.

Ideally, you want to get your positioning correct before you even start your book. Fixing your positioning later in the process can require significant revisions.

And if you never define it, you’ll end up with a bad book.

On Day 2, we discuss the book writing journey and the psychological milestones you’ll encounter along the way.

Confidence ebbs and flows throughout the writing process. We help you learn to set the right expectations: sometimes you’ll feel accomplished, other times you’ll hate your work. By preparing for the hard times, you won’t be caught off guard when they come, and you’ll be able to overcome them sooner rather than later.

Then we teach you the overall process for writing your first draft. We walk you step by step through developing a writing plan . This helps you envision your daily writing practice and set project timelines. That includes:

  • Identifying the milestones of your book, such as finishing your vomit draft (AKA your first draft).
  • Finishing your editing.
  • Publishing your book.

Failing to create a writing plan is the second most common reason why most Authors never finish. By defining when and where you’ll write your book, you have a reliable plan that helps you reduce overwhelm and stay on track.

We also talk you through the principles of good writing and editing . And we leave lots of time for detailed Q&A to discuss tactical questions and how to address emotional hurdles when they come.

On Day 3, we start with a Q&A with me. Then we head into teaching you about:

  • The publishing process.
  • An overview of marketing your book.
  • Details of the support you can expect from us and the Author community as you write, edit, and publish.

We devote a large part of the final day to an interactive “Fear Solving” process. We provide strategies you can use to uncover and work through your fears by tapping into the purpose behind your work.

We do this in a workshop-style format so you can hear each other’s responses and build confidence in your own capability to finish your book.

We end the workshop by prompting each Author to make a commitment to write their book and share their wisdom with the people it’s meant to help. It’s empowering to state your commitment out loud. It sets you up to persevere through the entire process.

How to Join Our Book Writing Workshop

We offer the Scribe book writing workshop as a part of our Guided Author program . It’s the kick-off that leads into the ongoing coaching and support as you work on your book.

We have a calendar of scheduled workshops throughout the year. You have the option to join one of our virtual workshops if you prefer to attend remotely. Or, you can attend an in-person workshop at our office in Austin, Texas.

In addition to everything I’ve covered above, you also receive a full manuscript evaluation when you’ve completed your first draft.

Our editors point out exactly what needs to be done to your manuscript. For example, they help you learn how to improve the structure, see where readers might get lost, and spot inconsistencies in voice or tone. Ultimately, you get a roadmap of the edits needed to make your book great.

But honestly, as much as our Authors love going through the program—the 3-day workshop, weekly group coaching, quarterly masterclasses, and writing community—the real value is in the results . It’s in the transformation that happens in their lives and businesses.

We’ve seen Authors:

  • Start entirely new businesses thanks to their books.
  • Attract a new level of client they’ve always wanted.
  • Develop courses based on their book material.
  • Grow their teaching abilities exponentially.
  • Go on to become massive bestsellers.

Hundreds of Authors have gone through the program. If this sounds like the kind of transformation you’re looking for, check out our Guided Author Program to learn more or read testimonials from our Authors. If you’re ready to take the next step, schedule a consult with our team.

Writers Workshop in a Book

$14.95 available at your local bookstore or through Amazon.

By Alan Cheuse (Editor), Lisa Alvarez (Editor), Richard Ford (Introduction)

Since 1969, the Community of Writers has helped develop the art and craft of many who are now household names. Instructors such as Michael Chabon, Mark Childress, Diane Johnson, Anne Lamott, Robert Stone, and Amy Tan have distilled their advice and wisdom from seminars and lectures, and the result is a book that captures the workshop experience of complete submersion in the writing process. With an introduction by novelist and short story master Richard Ford, himself a conference attendee in the 1970s, this volume gives the writer and dedicated reader a jolt of inspiration, sharp insight into matters of technique, and a feeling of camaraderie with a writing community.

Editorial Reviews

From publishers weekly.

This collection from the Community of Writers summer writing workshop, one of the oldest in the U.S., boasts an impressive list of alumni among its contributors, including Amy Tan, Michael Chabon, Richard Ford, Anne Lamott and Mark Childress. Rather than exercises and suggestions, however, this “workshop” is populated with literate, thoughtful essays on different aspects of crafting fiction. Ford’s foreward begins with some blunt advice: one “should treat the decision to write like a decision to get married: try to talk yourself out of it if you can.” Standouts include James D. Houston’s essay on the role of setting, which shapes not just “grounding and location,” but “the dreams you dream… your view of history, sometimes your sense of self.” Janet Fitch advises a deep plunge into sensual details: “Take a bite of a tangerine… and try to work your way into the place it came from, to a time and a place and a season.” A new or struggling writer will get the most out of Lamott’s “The Clinic,” in which she advises, “write what you want to come upon,” what makes “something inside of you… go ‘oooh.’ ” […]–writers will find much of these new and previously published essays worthwhile and motivating, perhaps none more so than Tan’s essay on “Angst and the Second Book,” which first appeared in the pages of PW. Program: Writer’s Workshops

Create and grow in our writing community.

A warm and creative community, Writer’s Workshop is a welcoming space for beginners and advanced young writers alike. In both our On-Campus Writer’s Workshop and our Online Writer’s Workshop, students work with accomplished writers to hone their craft and explore their creativity. Students come away with new ideas, a brimming portfolio, and a refined sense of their own voice.

Writer’s Workshop is a perfect balance of instruction from faculty, structured time to work on their craft with peers, and camp fun. A typical day begins with a seminar taught by our expert faculty. These seminars aim both to awaken your student’s natural creative impulses as well as grow writing skills with a focus on key concepts like voice, point of view, style, world-building, and more. Students use fun creative prompts to practice new techniques.

Reading in a tree

Of course, summer camp wouldn’t be complete without fun too! There are many opportunities to unwind and socialize with peers each day, including games, guest speakers, and free time to connect with new friends. Every week closes with a Writer’s Coffeehouse on Friday to celebrate creativity. The camp community gathers together to share selections from the work they have created over the week.

For Students Entering Grades:

Reading in a tree

  • Create an expanded portfolio of work.
  • Develop a stronger sense of your voice as a writer.
  • Build the skills to express yourself clearly in academic writing.
  • Learn critiquing and workshopping skills for college and beyond.
  • Connect with a network of supportive and wildly creative peers.

Writing Tracks

Exploratory (Middle School) The Exploratory track for our younger students emphasizes short stories while also exploring additional forms. Students are encouraged to experiment with writing in multiple genres and with varying types of narration. The focus is on energizing exercises to bolster creativity as students master important skills such as vivid description and more. In past summers, students have worked on scripts, short stories, novellas, essays, poetry, and other creative forms.

Screenwriting (High School - Stanford only)

The screenwriting track explores the fascinating world of writing screenplays. Students will delve into the creative process of writing scripts as well as the technical elements of script formatting.  Between exercises in their morning seminars and mentored writing sessions, students will dig into the nuances of character-building, story development, voice, and dialogue for the screen as they simultaneously explore screenplay form.  And, of course, we'll put these skills into practice to create original screenplays.

Fiction (High School)

The Fiction track focuses on key elements of prose fiction including (but certainly not limited to) point of view, the play and pause of time, character and world building, and dialogue. Students are encouraged to use the creative prompts they are given during supervised writing time to build a portfolio of project starts. The intent of this portfolio is to provide students with inspiration for directions in which to grow their craft.

Non-Fiction (High School)

The Non-Fiction track explores the art of the personal essay. Through reading and examining expository, argumentative, and narrative essay forms, students will engage in the vast creative potential of essay writing. Between exercises in their morning seminars and the examples found in the essays explored, students learn the building blocks of structure, expression, vivid descriptions, and more. Beyond the growth as a writer, this track is especially beneficial for students wishing to cultivate the skills necessary to write a powerful college admissions essay.

Poetry (High School - Amherst and Online only)

The Poetry track will focus on discussions and writing that explores poetic language including but not limited to cadence, rhythm, visual texture, and meaning. Through the guidance of the Academic Directors, students will examine the potential of poetic language compared to more traditional prose forms. Exploratory readings and inspiring writing exercises will push students to develop their voice as a poet and grow their skills in new directions.

Launching Writer’s Workshop in the Primary Classroom

Teacher Truth- I used to despise teaching Writer’s Workshop. I understood the structure of the workshop model and the focus of each grading period, however, I didn’t really know WHAT to teach each day during my mini-lessons. Fast forward a couple of years, and I had an amazing opportunity to visit an amazing teacher’s classroom and observe her in action and I fell in love with her writing instruction! And then the next year, my amazing team and I decided to each tackle one subject and share our plans. I chose writing (even though it still wasn’t my favorite) so I could spend more time learning about teaching writing and *hopefully* fall in love. It worked!

writers workshop books

Now that I LOVE writing, I wanted to share what I currently do to launch Writer’s Workshop! I’ve taken pieces from what I love from different resources to make what works for me and my students. This post is a little peek into my mini-lessons, anchor charts, and mentor texts that I love! I posted them in the order that I usually teach each lesson, however you can change them around to make it work for you and your group of writers! For each lesson I shared an example of an anchor chart! In my classroom, I always prepped the anchor charts with the title and an image first, but added the content WITH my students during the mini-lesson!  The books that I have posted are linked to my Amazon affiliate store. If you purchase them through the link, I will receive a small commission!

Join us for an awesome book writing workshop,

At your location or our bookstore.

Franklin is a strong advocate for nurturing the creativity of individuals who are passionate about writing stories, those who love to write, and even those who may lack the confidence to put their stories on paper. In the spirit of fostering a fun and enriching space for anyone interested in exploring authorship, practicing their writing, or embarking on a book-writing journey, Franklin is thrilled to offer a unique book writing workshop!

This workshop is Franklin's way of sharing his passion for writing and, more importantly, empowering people to have confidence in their storytelling abilities. It's an inclusive opportunity, welcoming students from grade 3 onwards through adults, with the exception that participants in elementary should attend alongside an adult.

So, what sets this workshop apart from the rest? Participants will have the incredible opportunity to craft their very own children's book manuscript under Franklin's expert guidance. While the intended duration is 4 hours, the workshop's flexible structure may extend or shorten a bit based on the participants' needs. At the end of the workshop, should you wish to publish your book on Amazon, Franklin's publishing team will provide support to make your book publish-ready. Furthermore, there's exciting potential for participants to earn ongoing income from their published works, and for students, having a published book title to include on college applications is a significant achievement. Throughout the sessions, Franklin will generously share his personal tips and strategies employed in his own book writing journey. Additionally, participants will receive an introduction to the fundamental concepts of creative writing. Along the way, you can anticipate loads of fun, and a collaborative, friendly atmosphere.

What's the underlying focus of this workshop beyond creating a book? In alignment with the core principles of the Franklin the Helper collection of books, this workshop aims to bolster self-confidence and self-motivation. Writing is a powerful form of self-expression that fosters social and emotional development while nurturing the creative mind. During the workshop, participants will be encouraged to use pen and paper for their writing, leaving tablets, electronic notebooks, and cell phones aside (unless there is a special need).

A particularly exciting aspect of this workshop is the opportunity to learn directly from Franklin himself. His book, "Bullies Made David Cry," made a remarkable debut as the #1 new release in Children's Christian Emotions & Feelings on Amazon! Furthermore, Franklin and his books have been featured on NBC Channel 5 News and Texas Today, ABC Channel 8 Good Day Texas morning show, and multiple print publications. In addition, this workshop is endorsed by the Microsoft BAM team and he has a partnership with PBS!

It's important to note that Franklin the Helper Children's Books, LLC will not incorporate any of the workshop's books into the Franklin the Helper collection. The individual books created by participants remain their exclusive property. Franklin the Helper Children's Books, LLC does not receive royalties from books published on Amazon through this workshop. Your creative journey remains uniquely yours!

2024 Revisions Workshop

The Black Creatives Revisions Workshop will help ten (10) aspiring writers revise their finished manuscripts over a six-month period with guidance from a dedicated mentor and through faculty-led seminars.

Program Details

WNDB is offering ten (10) slots total to U.S.-based writers who identify as part of the African diaspora. The cohort will be split among the following categories: two (2) Middle Grade (MG), four (4) Young Adult (YA), and four (4) Adult (A).

The winners will be matched with a published author who will guide them through the process of revising their manuscript .

The selected participants will be expected to attend all program events. Additionally, all successful applicants will be awarded stipends. Ten stipends of $1,000 will be awarded to all selected applicants.

Throughout the workshop, WNDB will introduce the attendees to the ins and outs of the publishing industry through one-on-one mentorship and programming with other industry professionals who will offer varied resources and support to the writers.

The Revisions Workshop is for writers who believe that they will benefit from instruction in their final stages of revision and have the capacity to dedicate the necessary time and effort to revising their completed manuscript during the six-month workshop.

Upon completion of the program, PRH will also select two winning manuscripts, and the winners will receive an additional cash prize and consideration for publication at Penguin Random House.

This is an opportunity for participants to collaborate with an experienced creator of children’s or adult books and receive individual support and feedback to turn a completed work-in-progress into a fully completed draft.

Program Structure

Over six months, writers accepted into the program will revise their manuscript under the guidance of their mentor and will attend virtual sessions to learn more about craft and publishing.

Upon the conclusion of the program, participants will submit their completed manuscripts to PRH editors. Every participant must submit a manuscript at the end of the course.

The Revisions Workshop will be comprised of:

  • Two 60-minute revision-focused faculty-led sessions
  • Six Industry Chat & Chews (evening sessions)
  • There will be communication between participants, and though it is not required, it is recommended that participants find critique partners within their genre group and ask questions that might be pertinent and useful to the entire group.
