Having used Celtx for some time I must say that as far as writing goes it is free, limited to 3 projects for which, in return, there is no page limit. Further production’s tools are in the premium pack, as well as the option to work offline. Now that I reached the limit of free projects, I am going to try other free tools but I feel Celtx should be in the list since other software have made it with the same or similar restrictions.

I’m a beginner screenwriter and I use Trelby. So far it has been really helpful. The only thing it lacks that I wish it had is the ability to put words into italics, bold print, or underline them. Otherwise, it is a great resource. Also, I wanted to say thank you so much for writing this blog! I’ve got a lot of great insight out of this.

Hi Script Reader Pro, May I begin by thanking you sincerely for your web site and the many tips so generously offered. I had Final Draft 8 but my hard drive became corrupted/broken and I lost it along with all my programmes including an Adobe Editing. Of course, being a stupid man, I did not register any of it thus, it is lost and I cannot afford the cost of new one. As Jesse says in Before Sunrise, “Anything that’s any good cost a little money”. I understand that not everyone can afford the best software, being poor myself, but sometimes you have to sacrifice and get the best if you are going to succeed, what’s the old adage, it cost money to make money. A football team doesn’t win the super bowl with third rate players, a NASCAR team doesn’t when the Daytona 500 with cheap cars. I remember years ago when I first building webpages, I downloaded a free web editor, my websites sucked, then I spent all my money on Macromedia Dreamweaver and it changed my world. I read an interview with Taylor Sheridan, it talked how he and his wife were broke, they maxed out their last credit card on Final Draft, and he when on to write 4 award winning Screenplays. Weather or not Final Draft is actually the best may be conjecture, but at the moment Hollywood seems to think so, so I’m going to go with the tool that provides me the best chance of success.

I am very happy using Fade-In as a second attempt at using screenwriting software. My first attempt was to use Celtx which was a nightmare with problems too varied to explain here. I ruined my laptop a couple months ago and had Fade in on it along with a script draft. I bought another laptop (an awful expense) and contacted Fade In support. I was given instant support by their downloading the program to include updates having only to use my code key. I paid for it once and get free updates. One time payment only. Using it is quite simple and takes very little time getting familiar with the keys for Scene Heading, Action, Character, Transition etc. I have printed four pages as a test script to see the results to ensure the results are correctly formatted and I was very happy to see the format was spot-on for all formatted processes, for which my test script had all that would be required under normal writing circumstances. If your budget will allow, I recommend Fade In. It is relatively short money compared to Final Draft et al and I think quite competitive. Cheers

Causality is not free, you have to pay $279 to save your document, so it’s not really worth it as a “free” program.

I can only agree with that. Causality is only a “DEMO Version”. Even if they call it the “Free Version”. You cannot save more than 10 pages, after that you have to pay! Pure fooling around and in my opinion has nothing to do with this list.

Hi! I just wanted to ask if any of these software have ever have any issues with hackers?

When will you all learn its not the software that matters its the STORY!

I used Final Draft for several years and liked it, then lost my apartment and my desktop, leaving me with a Chromebook laptop — and to my dismay, FD was incompatible with Chromebook. WriterDuet came to my rescue, so much so that I bought the paid (full, lifetime) version of WD, which runs beautifully and has several extras lacking in the basic free version. I’ve completed two feature romantic comedy screenplays with WD and am working on a third. Its scripts supposedly can be converted to FD, but I’ve yet to try that option.

Yes, you can import and export to Final Draft in WriterDuet.

I am surprised there’s so many free screenwriting software out there.

Can someone say which one is completely free. i cannot afford a software right now.

I paid for a Final Draft years ago and used it successfully for a while but then they wanted more money or they wouldn’t update my software to use on my new computer! They actually locked me out of my own software that I paid for! I thought that was really bad on their part. Like I mean I understand charging more for a new version but if I already bought it and was happy with it, I should be able to keep using that as long as I want. I decided to boycott Final draft. I don’t write full time so it wasn’t worth it to me to keep paying their new fees. I have used “fountanize” in chrome. It’s very basic and I miss the extras that Final draft had but I don’t want to give them my money anymore. I am going to try writer duet that several people mentioned on this site. Thank you for the tips!

Are all these options good when converting the script to PDF?

Adobe is no longer available to new users and existing users will need to have all their data downloaded and off the site by Jan 2019 as they are no longer offering the software….. just an fyi

There’s a new resource out there, a desktop application put out by the guys at Hollywood Camera Work, called Causality. It’s based more on the plotting out of your storyline – but it also lets you slowly write your script in nuggets of scriptlets as you develop your story. These nuggets are tied to your storyboard, which you can move around and rearrange at will – while still keeping your story logic intact. It’s not your expected scriptwriting software, and you’ll get frustrated if you think of it that way… but it is free and it’s a fresh new approach to the story development/scriptwriting process that’s at least worth the look. It’s free with a paid upgrade – I’ve only ever used the free version, and full-disclosure: I’ve never actually finished a project with it.

WriterDuet has been acting up lately for me. Sad, because I actually like that site.

So basically, James D, what you are saying is that your 15 scripts COMBINED aren’t worth the cost of $80 (Fade In’s current price), yet you would love your scripts to generate millions of dollars one day. Think about your logic for a second…

Adobe Story will reach end-of-life in January 2019 and even the desktop version will cease to function. It was a really nice piece of software too, what a shame!

Until I can justify the cost fo Final Draft or Fade In, I’ve been looking into free options. I used to subscribe to Celtx, but I’m not a writer and couldn’t justify the price for something that I only used occasionally. I’m finding that the free versions of both Celtx and Writer Duet are limited to only 3 scripts. (Already have at least 15 scripts in Celtx from when I had a subscription) Are any of the other alternatives open to unlimited scripts?

Can anyone tell me if I can copy and paste from the Celtx free version? Also, is there a way I can send somethings that I’ve written on Celtx? Also any idea’s of a way to get a cheap version of final draft? Thank you

A “cheap version of Final Draft” would be pirated which we don’t condone. I don’t use Celtx, but have you tried to copy and paste and it doesn’t work?

I really like CeltX but the pro version is insanely expensive. Same with Adobe Story. also, this whole online stuff is a nightmare. I want to be offline when i write to avoid distraction and if my internet goes down i can’t do a single thing. I miss the good old days when you bought something and owned it instead of fucking renting everything.

Does the SRP team have any thoughts on the software Scrivener? Final Draft has a sale going on through tomorrow/today, so I may cave in and buy it. I started dabbling with a trial of Scrivener though and was curious if anyone has experiences.

I would grab a copy of Final Draft while it’s on sale. Scrivener isn’t a screenwriting focused software.

There are many such software out there but I much prefer to stick with the pro software rather than free screenwriting programs if you want to be a professional writer. Just my opinion.

Celtx is AWFUL man! Avoid.

I have to really take a little offense to the script snobs who say things like, “if you’re serious and want to be a REAL writer, you’ll fork over for Final Draft”. Why does it offend me? Because it is some serious gatekeeping bullsh*t. FD isn’t just “buggy”, it has outright fits malicious destruction that has erased masterpieces like Thanos snapping his fingers in the Infinity Gauntlet. I’ve been screenwriting since the “format it on your typewriter” days and there was a time I really liked Final Draft. Then it became an industry ‘standard’ and the price gouging began. FD bloats the software with a lot of useless crap, of which close to half of them never work as advertised. Then there are their crack anti-piracy measures that were obviously coded by someone SMOKING crack. One of them randomly and falsely identified my copy as being altered/pirated, which it wasn’t. FD made a few feeble attempts to correct the problem until they just said “sorry” and that was the end of it. For them, at least. For whatever reason, the issues continued with the next update. And the next. I’ve gone through multiple computers since then, new storage drives, etc. and while it seems like everything is going well, I’d eventually have the same issue all over again. FD’s usual response? Give us more money for bloatware that doesn’t work because we’re the industry standard and you’re not a REAL screenwriter unless you use our product, which, of course, I absolutely can NOT. So everybody that has that snotty “FD is the only tool for real writers” attitude, absolutely screw yourselves. If I COULD pirate this software at this point, I WOULD. Attitudes like FD’s and the people who support them in that absolute way are why the practice exists. A lot of these free apps are great alternatives and if you need to use a few of them to accomplish different things, then so be it. There’s something to be said for “right tool for the right job” over “cram all of the tools into the same toolbox but they’re not as big or good as the specialized tools & a lot of them are broken but hey, it’s more convenient, right?”. No, it isn’t. I’d love to see them get blasted by the FTC or something and forced to issue free copies of the program to anyone who wants it. Mine probably STILL wouldn’t work but I wouldn’t be out more money than I received for a couple of the screenplays I manage to write with it. Sorry about the rant but that one’s been building up for a long time.

Last script I wrote I bought Dramatica, which was a bear & I gave up on it. I formatted using books & other scripts. I’ve been asked to write for a project that already has a producer, but I’ve been out so long that I need advice on what software to use. This is a movie with possibility of going mini-series. Final Draft may not be perfect but it’s the best screenwriting program out there at the moment. Don’t waste your time with these freebie alternatives.

That’s subjective. After trying both, I think Writerduet is definitely better. Even the free version can do almost all, if not all, of what Final Draft can do, and there’s a lot it can do that Final Draft can’t.

Yes, it’s pretty decent.

Writer Duet was good, except when I converted it to PDF and printed it, it messed up several of my pages, because there were long blocks of text. I didn’t have the same problem with Fade In but every page printed would have (printed with the demonstration version of Fade In).

Does any one know what Amazon screenwriter is like?

Amazon Storywriter is very bare-bones. It’s simple and gives you what you need to get your script on paper, but it lacks any kind of moderately advanced features that make most screenwriting software so nice to use.

Celtx is NOT free. 15 days of use, and you’re locked out until you subscribe- it’s pricey as well.

I installed Trelby, but it didn’t work for me. All I could see were tutorials which are helpful but the space on which to type was just a white screen so I deleted it.. Am I doing something wrong here or is that the way it’s supposed to be??? Comments, suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Choosing to become a screenwriter is one of the biggest life decisions you’ll ever make. It takes hard work, discipline, and a willingness to hear a lot of people tell you “No” before finally hearing that one breakthrough “Yes” that will take you to the next level. But making a film or a TV show takes a village, and it all starts with words on paper — or at least words in a PDF file — and for that, you'll need screenwriting software.

To become a screenwriter, you’ll need a bag of tricks and tools to take on your journey, and a professional, straightforward screenwriting software program is probably the most important tool to have as you get started.

Final draft 12.

Full Version: $249 (but you can get it here for $199 ) | Trial Version: Free

Final Draft has been the industry standard screenwriting software for at least two decades. Version 12 is easy to use and seems to have the best professional script tools especially when it comes to production. Still, it’s surprising that after all this time (Final Draft was created in 1990), there are still some features that can be frustrating to a writer, especially at such a high price point (in full disclosure, I currently use Final Draft as my main software). 

The “Speech to Script” feature is incredibly helpful, especially if you spend a lot of time on your computer. Just like on your smartphone, an image of a little microphone sits at the bottom of the screen. Click it and not only are you able to speak dialogue, but everything else you need to add to your script using “Dictation Commands” that include commands such as “Move left,” “Move right,” “Go to previous field,” and “Undo that.” These work surprisingly well, assuming you’re very familiar with screenplay formatting. 

Even if you are miles away from your co-writer, you can collaborate by initiating a collaboration session and inviting your co-writer to join you. You’ll both need Wi-Fi to do this, however, and both need to have the same version of the software.

Final Draft 12 comes loaded with basic formatting templates like screenplay, one-hour drama, graphic novel, etc. which are helpful for TV writers.

Final Draft is definitely the most expensive software on the list.

Overall Impression

I like the new features though there are many I know I’ll never use like adding an image into the body of my screenplay. I also like that you can call for support on the phone and get a live person.

Probably the best thing to know about Highland 2 is that the software was created by a screenwriter — John August, writer of such big movies as Aladdin ,  Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , and  Corpse Bride . The software is intuitive and easy to use and takes into account that it’s being used by an actual human being who may get distracted or need motivation to write.  There are a lot of features Highland 2 offers that writers will love .

If you’re like me and spend the first thirty minutes “writing” by surfing the internet, then you’ll love the “Goal” and “Sprint” features. For “Goal” you set how many pages or words you want to write that day and it keeps track for you. It also records when you hit your “Milestones.” It’s literally a record of your workflow. 

I also like having the scratchpad to the left of the page where I can make notes and found the “Drag and Drop Navigator” pretty genius. This tool shows you a list of your slug lines and allows you to move entire scenes around without having to cut and paste them. It’s super easy and I know it will come in handy when I’m in a second or third draft. 

While I like the clean, minimalist appearance, sometimes I felt like a detective searching for clues on how to do something in the software. I’m a novice user, so that will probably improve with time. Also, the software didn’t always recognize when I was typing a character name (simply typing in all caps is supposed to alert the software that it’s a name and format it as such). I wish there were an easy way to manually do this, like with a dropdown menu. 

This software is ONLY compatible with a Mac, so Windows users are out of luck. 

This is good software for the price, but it will take some time before I feel completely confident using the software because I didn’t find that the software always knew what element I was trying to type.

Celtx cloud-based software is much more than a screenwriting platform. It offers a “studio” experience by, “Finding order through connected workflow” according to one of its many educational videos. In addition to software for writing screenplays, index cards, and storyboards, there are templates for creating nearly everything you might need for preproduction, like a budget, shooting schedule, call sheets, and a shot list. 

The screenwriting software is very easy to use. You can “tab” through the various essential script elements (action, dialogue, etc.) and there is also a dropdown menu to click, but I found the software to seemingly know what I was writing as I was writing it. 

All parts of Celtx are meant to be collaborative. As you create a project, you can easily invite others to view or add to the project, they just have to log in. A collaborator can leave comments or start to put together a prop list, costume list, and any other list as well as work on the screenplay in real-time. This type of program tries to create the vibe of a production studio by bringing the entire crew together and joining forces. I could see this working well in a film school setting or while creating a short film because everyone gets to see the input each is adding to the project and it’s all kept in one place in the cloud. 

The membership payment model may be a turnoff for some. And the inclusion of pre-production features might feel cluttered to those who just want to sit down and write.

Celtx is solid, intuitive screenwriting software with multiple features that are really geared toward production. Celtx is a great option for anyone with decent internet service who’s dipping their toe into screenwriting.  

“Free” Version: Free | “Plus” Version: $9.99/month | “Pro” Version: $11.99/month | “Premium” Version: $13.99/month. 

Created in 2013, WriterDuet is cloud-based software made to help writers and editors collaborate online. If you write alone, it’s still a good option, but it seems to have been created for the express purpose of writing together in real-time. 

The interface was fairly easy to use right off the bat. It seemed to recognize character names, dialogue, etc., as I typed them simply using the return or tab key to change elements.     

If you’ve already written the first draft of a script and want to continue working on it in WriterDuet, it’s quick and easy to upload. It’s also just as easy to save and export your script in multiple formats including Final Draft, Fountain, Celtx, Docx, and PDF. You can work on or offline — your script changes will be updated when you log back in.  

It automatically creates notecards for you in a separate window called “Cards” and offers a “Private Pad” for making notes. 

Again, the membership model might not be ideal for some writers. Also, I missed having an option to change elements like character names and dialogue manually.

WriterDuet is great software when collaborating is crucial — writers rooms, sketch comedy groups, and film schools. The tech support is quick and helpful, getting back to me with answers within 24 hours. WriterDuet is a solid option, even for solo writers. 

Trial Version: Free | Full Version: $79.95

Fade In is a screenwriting software used by many professional screenwriters, including Rian Johnson ( Knives Out ), Craig Mazin ( Chernobyl ), and Kelly Marcel ( Venom: Let There Be Carnage ).

Fade In makes starting a screenplay nearly effortless. Without reading any instructions, I just started writing a slug line and it easily kept track of the other elements like action, dialogue, etc. for me. There is a box to manually change the elements, which I appreciate. The interface is clean and lean and very stable. 

Anyone with basic knowledge of screenplay format will be able to use it right away without any instruction. For the price of $79, it’s a fantastic alternative to Final Draft, only with fewer bells and whistles. You can drag and drop .fdx files, even PDFs (though the PDF I imported wasn’t formatted properly once I opened it in Fade In) but the .fdx file was perfect. You can export files in multiple formats including Final Draft, Fountain, and Ebook (.epub). 

The “Navigator” feature allows you to move scenes around within your screenplay without having to cut and paste. There is also an “Index Cards” feature and you can assign colors to the “cards.” I love this color feature especially when I’m writing a story with more than one protagonist – each protagonist gets their own color.  

There is also a collaboration tool once you purchase the full version of the app. The “Full Screen” mode is helpful to eliminate distractions.

There are no tutorials or instructional videos that I could find, but the software is very straightforward for anyone with experience writing a screenplay. However, this may leave a novice screenwriting out in the cold. 

This is solid screenwriting software at a reasonable price that allows an experienced screenwriter to just sit down and focus on the writing. Fade In supports the software by doing frequent, free updates with new features.

StudioBinder

Free Version: Free | “Indie” Version: $29/month | “Professional” Version: $49/month | “Studio” Version: $99/month

It’s not really fair to call StudioBinder screenwriting software because it’s so much more than that. Similar to Celtx, this cloud-based software seems to be made for production studios. That doesn’t mean that the screenwriting software is inadequate, it just means if you’re a writer who just wants to work on your screenplay, this likely isn’t the best software for you as many features will go unused. 

Writing a screenplay in the software was easy once I became oriented and after watching a tutorial video. There are icons at the top of the page to represent the elements in your screenplay (a thought bubble represents dialogue, a megaphone represents an action line, etc.). But it’s easy to move through the elements by hitting tab or return or you can do it manually using the icons. Script pages can be locked and new scenes will keep the same scene number but add a letter. For example: a new scene added after scene two becomes scene 2A.   

The higher-tiered versions come with up to 100 GB of storage space on the cloud. 

Support is offered through a chat box by clicking a button on your screen which makes it so easy! They had the fastest support response of any of the software I tested. There are numerous short tutorial videos available hosted by a slightly unctuous young man named Brandon with a dubious hipster haircut. 

All of the production tools can make writing in StudioBinder a little difficult. Feels "busy."

I found StudioBinder to be a very distracting place to write. The many production tools seem great, so great, that the screenwriting part of the software itself feels incidental. Having to think about shooting schedules and locations and props added a layer of stress to the experience that I didn’t enjoy. However, I could see the benefit for a production team to all have access to one “project” they can access on the cloud on their computers. 

Arc Studio Pro

Free Version: Free | Essential Version: $69/year | Pro Version: $99/year

According to Arc Studio’s website, their software is “designed for maximum flow: no need to browse through old-school formatting menus – everything is right where you need it, when you need it.” As I looked through the free version, I found this to be true.

It’s very intuitive and easy to use. I enjoyed the easy-to-navigate options for creating scenes and outlines. There’s also an option to plot out story arcs, or rising and falling action, on a linear chart that tracks where the action is happening by page number called “Arc Mode.” This is something I typically do by hand on a large piece of paper. I really felt the software had me in mind when I discovered this feature and the creators understand that crafting a screenplay takes foresight and strategic planning.

The software is easy to use and simple to download. I like that you can record beats, story arcs, and themes in a sidebar to the left of your actual screenplay. I also like that the screen isn’t overloaded with too many options.

The “Free” version allows you to work on two screenplays at a time. If you decide to pay for the “Essential” or “Pro” versions, more features are available, like creating an unlimited number of scripts, using the software over multiple devices, and inviting collaborators.   

Also good is that it’s easy to export your script as a PDF, or Final Draft (.fdx) file.

The yearly membership can be a turnoff for some. 

This software is solid and easy to use and the free version is perfect for beginners.

Movie Magic Screenwriter

Trial Version: Free | Full Version: $249 (but is currently available on their website for $169) 

The screenwriting software is intuitive and I started writing immediately. There are many templates to choose from including comic book, BBC screenplays, novel, radio play, etc. They also have templates for some TV shows.

There are also lots of ways to customize your page, with buttons on the ribbon above your screenplay but also in drop-down menus. The interface is uncluttered and doesn’t distract from writing. The one feature I was most excited about was the “Streamline” tool that analyzes your script and “...examines a document for places where word changes or edits will reduce the total number of pages in the document.” Any writer who’s spent hours trying to shave a few pages off their script will be grateful for the help that doesn’t cheat the page. 

There are many instructional videos on YouTube to help out if you get stuck.

The full version might be too pricey for some writers. Updates are sometimes delayed for Mac users.

While this software was easy to use and support via email was prompt. My only hesitation with this software is that, in the past, Mac users have had to wait for updates to use some features in Movie Magic, but they seem to be up to date currently. If you’re a Mac user, you may want to check out Highland 2 since that one caters only to Mac users.

Do You Really Need Professional Screenwriting Software?

FocusWriter helps writers combat one of their biggest challenges: distractions. One of the best free writing software tools out there, it's specifically designed to let you just concentrate on your writing. 

The stripped-back interface is deliciously sparse - ideal for when you just need to get your head down and write - and not dissimilar to a moderately powerful version of Notepad, featuring support for TXT, basic, RTF, and ODT files. 

Even the toolbar is hidden until you actually need it. Just swoop your cursor to the top on the screen to reveal a barren menu, from basic formatting to themes and timers.

Features are light within the software, but FocusWriter isn’t made for heavy editing sessions. It’s designed to make the act of writing flow seamlessly onto the page.

WriteMonkey is another piece of free writing software that cuts down on the clutter to deliver uninterrupted writing sessions. 

The free word processor, cleverly described as zenware, is unbelievably pared back compared to more traditional writing apps. 

There’s very little in the way of distracting ‘screen furniture’, which means you’re better positioned to concentrate on the writing process. And absolutely nothing else. 

But don’t let that stripped-back approach fool you. As one of the best free writing apps, WriteMonkey is still rich with the sort of core features that matter to writers. 

However, most options are hidden in a context menu (so you’ll need to right-click to view it). It also only supports TXT files, which may limit those looking to read, write, or edit across multiple formats. It is, at least, a portable download, letting you take it wherever you need.

If you’ve enjoyed Markdown, the simplified text-editing language that lets you format, annotate, classify, and link as you type, then great. WriteMonkey’s inner workings will instantly chime.

3. LibreOffice Writer

Writer, the open-source, free writing software, serves almost all general writing needs.

LibreOffice is a near-perfect example of free office software - a familiar, feature-rich take on the office suite. What the veteran software package lacks in Microsoft polish (its interface is undeniably old-fashioned, for starters), it makes up for in its price-point: free. For that, you get access to six tools: Calc, Impress, Draw, Base, Math, and Writer. 

Earning it a slot on our list of best free writing apps is the fact that LibreOffice Writer packs the full editing toolbox. 

This isn’t just a note-taking app for staving off distractions when you’re deep in the zone; it’s for when you’re in pure writer-mode. 

If you’re at all proficient with Microsoft Word, you won’t have any problems using the Writer software. Layouts and functions are almost identical, and there’s support for DOC and DOCX file types, making it efficient to switch out of the Microsoft garden.

4. Microsoft Word

When it comes to word processors, Microsoft Word is probably the baseline against which all others are compared. It’s the one most of us use at school, home, and work. It’s familiar, comfortable - and it’s available free on the web and mobile devices. 

That may not be the best way to write your masterpiece (unless you’ve hooked up a Bluetooth keyboard). But it’s a great way to jot down ideas on-the-go. When we tested the browser-based version we found it could be a bit slow at first, and we were typing faster than the words appeared on screen. This settles down (mostly) after a minute or so. 

Microsoft’s free writing apps on Android and iPhone had no such issues. Using these was velvety smooth. We especially appreciated the option to switch between mobile view and desktop view, so we could gauge how the document would appear in full-screen. 

As with Google Docs, you’ll need to sign up with a Microsoft account. And, like Google, that also lets you use free versions of PowerPoint, Excel, and the like. While Word offers one of the best free writing app experiences, there’s no denying that the paid-for upgrade is superior, offering more tools, and a true desktop app.

Author promises to make it easier to ‘think, write, and cite’. It’s a promise capably delivered, with a clean interface and bags of writing features designed to make it easy to go from first draft to final copy. 

If you're an Apple user in search of the best free writing apps on macOS, this one demands your attention. 

Concept Maps is one of the best features. It’s a great mind-mapping tool to visualize and lay down all your thoughts while they’re fresh in your head without constraint. You can worry about whipping them into shape later. 

Students and report writers will appreciate Author’s ‘fast citing’ tools - speeding up assignment-writing by correctly adding and formatting citations, references, and contents. 

A paid-for upgrade of the writing software that offers exporting options is available. However, unless you need automatic formatting on export, you can stick with the free version. 

6. Google Docs

Google Docs is a great free writing platform for any writer. It’s an extremely clean, quick word processor available in the browser, on desktop, and phone and tablet apps. So, you can take notes wherever inspiration strikes. 

Docs is more or less Google’s spin on Microsoft Word. The interface is a bit more simple than the professional office software - although it’s no less powerful. 

You’ll find heaps of writing tools, including a pretty accurate speech-to-text transcription tool (just enunciate and don’t talk too fast). Keyboard shortcuts are very well-supported. 

For best results, you’ll need an internet connection, though documents can be used offline. They’ll be synced, and in our experience, that happens swiftly behind the scenes. 

To take advantage of the free writing app, you’ll need a Google account, which may be a deal-breaker for some - but that also opens up the rest of the Google-stuff in the Google-sphere, such as Sheets, Slides, and . With a free account, you get 15GB of storage, which should be more than enough for word documents. A Google One subscription upgrades your storage space, amongst other things. 

Additionally, Google Docs is great if you want to collaborate with one or more other writers. Just be warned to stay in Google Docs for that, because exporting the data into Word or other writing applications can result formatting errors.

AI writers vs writing apps - what's the real difference?

Artificial intelligence is growing in a big way - and when it comes to writing, it's ChatGPT that's been snatching all the headlines of late, with its ability to generate short- and long-form content based on user prompts.

Generally, an AI writer will write your content for you, based on its current learning (although often without 'understanding' the context). A writing app simply lets you write your way, in your own voice. 

Some platforms, such as Canva , have even integrated AI into its Canva Docs and Canva PDF Editor services. However. its Magic Write tool acts as a writing assistant, serving up suggestions and ideas, leaving real writers to work their magic on the content. Though usually hiding in the back-end, you can also find AI integrated in other ways across other the best PDF editor apps (and even the best free PDF editor apps, too).

As always with AI-generated content, whether it's the written word or an artwork masterpiece, human involvement is usually necessary and always desirable. Even if you're using the best AI writers out there, editing and proofreading is essential to give the content accuracy and emotional resonance.

How to choose the best free writing app for you

When deciding which free writing app is best, start by figuring out what sort of writing you want to do. 

Do you need a handy tool for quick scribbles and jotting down ideas here and there, or are you using the writing software to write and edit an epic novel? Tools like FocusWriter and Write Monkey are great for getting thoughts on the page without friction.

It’s also worth considering if you need a writing app with a distraction-free design, so you can concentrate on what really matters to you. Again, FocusWriter performs admirably here, but as a result, you lose core typography and editing functions. Unlike LibreOffice, this isn’t the best Microsoft Office alternative if you need those tools. In that scenario, it may be worth considering looking at some of the best free office software , which includes MS Word-style apps, alongside other tools similar to Excel, PowerPoint, and so on. 

Access is an important factor when using your writing software. A tool like Scribus needs to be downloaded to your machine. Lightweight apps like FocusWriter, however, offer a portable download that can be downloaded to a USB and carried with you. 

Check what file formats your chosen writing app supports, too. While some let you create and edit the common DOC and DOCX files, others only allow TXT or RTF documents.

You’ll hear Final Draft called “the industry standard” for screenwriting software. And they expect you to pay for it. Currently, the latest version of Final Draft is $249.99. So how did Final Draft get to be the most widely used scriptwriting software?

The easiest answer is that they’ve been around the longest. Nearly every show and studio uses Final Draft. While it's also the most buggy, it has the easiest user interface to navigate.

They also are constantly updating the software with new features. Upgrades usually cost around $99. While they’re not necessary, they do offer new and useful things from time to time.

Offline SCREENWRITING SOFTWARE

You heard Final Draft was “the industry standard?” Well, Fade In bills itself as the “new industry standard.” Shots fired! 

At only $79, Fade In is making its run at Final Draft’s market. Relatively new, and more efficient than Final Draft, Fade In is the script writing software becoming preferred by those who don't have to bend to the standards of studios and networks.

A Plain Text Editor Plain Text files That’s right, if you’re writer on a budget, you don’t need to spend any money buying expensive writing software or apps. Instead, you can use the text editor that comes free with your operating system. Just open up Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on a Mac. How to rotate the screen on your Windows 11 PC

O n Windows 11 , you can rotate the screen in at least three ways, and in this guide, I will explain how this configuration is done.

Usually, you don't have to rotate the screen, but in some scenarios, it might be useful, especially if you're a programmer or a social media junkie and you want to turn the screen to portrait mode to optimize the viewing experience of code or social posts. 

Screen rotation is a must on devices like tablets since it allows you to switch orientation to consume content from a digital book or document. 

You can even use this functionality to flip the screen upside-down to play a friend a prank. 

Regardless of the reason, the operating system offers more than one way to complete this configuration. You can even disable the screen rotation.

In this how-to guide , I will explain the steps you have to take to rotate the screen on devices running Windows 11.

How to rotate screen on Windows 11

You have at least three ways to rotate the screen on your computer through the Settings app, shortcuts, and graphics card control panel.

Using Settings app

To change the screen rotation on Windows 11, use these steps:

• Open  Settings .
• Click on  System .
• Click the  Display  page on the right.
• Click the  Display orientation  setting under the "Scale & layout" settings.
• Select the desired rotation, including:
• Landscape:  Default configuration.
• Portrait:  Rotates screen 90 degrees (left).
• Landscape (flipped):  Screen flips 180 degrees.
• Portrait (flipped):  Rotates screen 90 degrees (right).

Once you complete the steps, the system will apply the rotation setting according to your selection.

Using keyboard shortcuts 

You can also use keyboard shortcuts to rotate the screen on Windows 11:

• Ctrl + Alt + Up arrow –  rotates to landscape mode.
• Ctrl + Alt + Down arrow –  rotates the screen upside down.
• Ctrl + Alt + Right arrow –  rotates the screen 90 degrees (right).
• Ctrl + Alt + Left arrow –  rotates the screen 90 degrees (left).

Use the  "Ctrl + Alt + Up arrow"  keyboard shortcut to return to the normal orientation.

These shortcuts only work on some graphics cards. If it's not working, use the Settings app option.

Using graphics card control panel

Some graphics card manufacturers, such as Nvidia, have their own control panel solution for configuring settings and changing the screen orientation. 

To rotate the screen with the Nvidia Control Panel, use these steps:

• Open  Control Panel .
• Click on  Hardware and Sound .
• Click on  NVIDIA Control Panel .
• Click on  Rotate display u nder the "Display" section.
• Select the display (if applicable).
• Choose the orientation (or use the controls on the right).
• Click the  Apply  button.
• Rotate the monitor.

Although AMD also has a control panel application, after checking the solution and researching online, it appears that AMD no longer supports the rotation option through software. If you have a Radeon graphics card, the option to use the Settings app may be your only choice.

Disable rotation lock (optional)

To turn off Windows 11's rotation lock, use these steps:

• Click the  Display  page on the right side.
• Turn on the  "Rotation lock"  toggle switch under the "Scale & layout" section.

Alternatively, you can disable this feature by going to the  "Quick Settings"  menu (Windows key + A) and toggling the Rotation lock button off.

These options are only available if the device supports auto-rotation. Otherwise, it won't appear in the operating system.

iOS 18 Could Improve the iPhone's Home Screen. It's About Time

Commentary: The iPhone's home screen is in need of a shake-up. And we may get just that with iOS 18.

If you're an iPhone owner, your home screen probably consists of rows and columns of neatly arranged apps and folders. But what if you had more say in the matter? Apple is reportedly updating the iPhone's home screen in iOS 18 to make it more customizable, according to MacRumors and Bloomberg . 

We won't know for sure until Apple announces iOS 18 , which will presumably happen on June 10 at its Worldwide Developers Conference . But if those reports turn out to be true, the iPhone's home screen could end up looking a little more like an Android's. MacRumors indicates the update may bring more flexibility when it comes to how icons can be arranged on the home screen. For example, the report suggests you'll be able to leave blank spaces between icons and widgets. 

Changing the home screen is delicate business. Apple has to straddle the line between keeping it comfortable and familiar -- we call it the home screen for a reason -- while introducing new features and functionality. 

But in the case of the home screen, change can be a good thing.

The iPhone's home screen has been largely the same for years. The lock screen got a facelift in iOS 16 that made it possible to customize fonts and added more depth to photos, giving them a 3D-like effect. The home screen deserves its own makeover.

Giving people the freedom to arrange app icons more freely may sound minor. There are likely plenty of iPhone users who are satisfied with their tidily arranged apps. But the option to put spaces between apps and widgets could open new possibilities. 

For one, it could put more emphasis on the wallpaper, and perhaps Apple could even design new wallpaper options with this in mind. The option to place apps closer to the bottom of the screen could also be helpful at times when you're using your phone with one hand. Reachability mode already exists for this purpose. But simply positioning an app within reach could feel more natural.

In the near term, a shift like this would probably just make it easier to organize your apps. What interests me the most about a more personalized home screen, though, is the idea behind it. A small change like this could give you the liberty to turn your home screen into whatever you want -- whether that be a checkerboard of apps, a dashboard for your favorite widgets, or something in between. 

There's clearly demand for more personalization on the iPhone's home screen. iPhone users have come up with all sorts of workarounds to put some distance between apps. That includes using third-party tools to create the appearance of blank spaces and  saving webpages with transparent logos as shortcuts on the home screen. 

Android users have had this luxury for a long time. On an Android device, you can drag and drop app icons pretty much anywhere you please on the home screen.

I said earlier that the home screen hasn't changed much in years. While that's true on a fundamental level, it's an oversimplification. Apple has gradually expanded what the iPhone's home screen can do in subtle yet useful ways. 

Back in 2020, for example, iOS 14  brought two important changes: home screen widgets and the App Library. The former lets you pin handy information like the time and weather to your home screen, while the latter makes it easier to clean up clutter by organizing apps into specific folders. 

Then came the Dynamic Island , which made it easier to keep tabs on activities in apps -- like your Uber's ETA -- from the home screen. Although it's not technically a home screen in the traditional sense, iOS 17's Standby mode could also be seen as an evolution of the iPhone's default screen. Standby mode essentially turns the iPhone into a miniature smart display for showing items like the time, weather, your calendar and more while the device is charging and in landscape mode. 

It's features like the Dynamic Island and Standby mode that make me think some big changes are in store for the home screen. While the option to arrange apps more fluidly may not seem relevant to those features on the surface, it perhaps similarly points to a future in which the iPhone's home screen becomes more than just an app grid.

Here's how you can use your iPad as a second Mac screen

You can use different apps on the two displays, extend the same app, or mirror both screens.

Using your iPad as a second screen for your Mac is a great way to enhance productivity. For instance, if you’re editing a film, you can view your content in full screen on your Mac and use your iPad for the editing panels. Or you can make use of Apple Pencil functionality on your iPad and use your Mac to display your artwork.

Sidecar allows you to extend your Mac’s display by 1) using different apps on both devices, 2) using the same app on both displays or 3) mirroring the screens to view exactly the same content on your iPad and Mac.

Note that using Sidecar requires at least macOS 10.15 or later and iPadOS 13 or later.

Setting up Sidecar is pretty easy. Just make sure you’re signed in with the same Apple ID on your Mac and iPad . Then, connect the two devices together . You can either do this wirelessly or via a wired connection. For the former, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your iPad and Mac. The devices need to be within Bluetooth range of one another, which is about 33 feet or 10 meters. Use any USB cable that can connect to both devices for a wired connection.

The last step might look a bit different for users with various macOS versions. If you’re on a macOS 13, go into your Apple menu > System Settings > Displays > tap on the little plus icon on the right > select your iPad from the list titled ‘Mirror or extend to.’

MacOS 10.15 to 12.5 users will go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Displays > Add Display > select their iPad from the list titled ‘Mirror or extend to.’

When you’re done using this dual-screen setup, you can disconnect using one of these two ways . On an iPad, click on the Disconnect icon at the bottom of the sidebar. Or on a Mac, go to the Control Center in the menu > Display > deselect your iPad from the list ‘Mirror or extend to.’
