Unless you're having issues with your local internet connection, Xbox Live sign-in issues can be caused by service outages on Microsoft's side. These outages can sometimes be system-wide and sometimes occur only in specific locations or with specific users.

Need assistance with error codes such as 0x87dd0004? Check out our common Xbox errors guide below. See: Is Xbox Live Down ?.

Sometimes, the outage is over and sign-in issues persist. To fix Xbox One Xbox Live sign-in problems, perform a full reboot of your system, also known as a powercycle, cold restart or hard reset. To do this, hold the power button for 10 seconds while the system is on. The system will turn off. When you hit the button again, it will start and display the green start-up screen. All your data is preserved, but cache and some settings are reverted and log-in or game start issues are resolved.

Check your error codes.

No Xbox Live online content is available

  • Can’t connect to Xbox Live

Constant lag across games

My new download is way too slow.

  • I can’t capture the content that I want

Everything works but party chat and other party features

Before we get into specific problems that plague Xbox gamers, it’s always a good idea to start by seeing if Xbox Live is down in your region. This does happen occasionally, can happen at any time, and may only happen in some locations.

You can check by going to the Xbox Live status page and clicking on the particular content or activity you are trying to do, to see if Microsoft has logged any recent problems with it. You can also check Down Detector , which tends to be a little faster in recording an ongoing issue.

If it looks like service is down, that indicates a problem with servers that could be related to any number of factors, from maintenance to server failure. There’s not much to do now except wait for the problem to be resolved. Continue checking the status page, Xbox Support Twitter , and other sources to see when the solution is confirmed.

Note that games also have their own servers, which can experience similar problems. If you are only having trouble accessing one game, pay a visit to the title’s own website or support page and see if they are reporting any problems (Xbox Support also occasionally reports on these issues).

Sometimes Xbox Live will give you an error code when you try to do something, like playing a game, watching a movie, or opening an app. For example, error 0x80048051 indicates that Xbox Live is down entirely, or that you have a Microsoft account problem that you need to check. You can check all error codes here : They often give you the right place to start with your troubleshooting, or even offer a quick fix.

Note that these codes are different than the error codes that a specific game will give you, like Destiny 2 ’s infamous Weasel or Chicken codes when servers are having trouble. Xbox error codes are only for general system or connection problems.

Can’t sign into Xbox Live

If your Xbox turns on normally and seems to function properly but won’t let you sign into your account at all, this indicates an account issue more than a problem with Live itself. Try to sign in manually and take particular care that your username and password are correct. If you can, hop onto a computer and sign into your Microsoft account to see if that’s working properly. If it looks like the problem is with your account in particular, there are two things you can try.

Check your account : Microsoft does suspend accounts for enough reports of bad behavior or violations of the Services Agreement. You can sign in and check to see if your account has been suspended by visiting this webpage .

Check your security settings : Occasionally, issues with not having the right authentication information or account password will block you from your account. This may happen if your account was hacked. You should get email notifications about any odd security changes, and you can go here to check on security settings specifically. Note that if you update or change security settings, it will take 30 days to fully go into effect, and during this time period some Xbox Live features, like managing parental controls, will be blocked. This is also a good time to check your billing information and make sure all payment info looks correct.

If you can sign into your account without trouble but can’t access any Xbox Live content, especially online content, there are a few things you can try to fix the problem.

First, try a full reboot. You can shut down your Xbox directly from the controller (assuming you aren’t frozen trying to get online), but we suggest a hard reset instead, since this tends to resolve issues more reliably. Hold down the power button on the front of your console for at least 10 seconds, until it shuts off. Now disconnect the power cable from the Xbox, wait for another 10 seconds, and reconnect, then restart. Your Xbox will take a minute to fully boot up again, and you can see if this fixes the problem.

You may also want to test your internet connection. Press the Xbox button on your controller when signed into Xbox Live, then go to Profile and System to the right, choose Settings , and in the General section, visit Network Settings . Look for the option to Test network connection . Xbox Live will run this test and report if it can connect successfully or not. If it reports a problem, then your internet has an issue. Xbox may provide more detailed information you can use to troubleshoot this issue, but it’s a good idea to check your cable connections, reboot your router if necessary, and see if your local internet is having any issues.

Can’t connect to Xbox Live

In this case, Xbox Live is up and running, but you can’t connect and you aren’t getting any helpful error codes. There are two things to try to see if your connection needs to be fixed.

Check your IP settings : Visit Settings under Profile and System , and select Network settings in the General section. Now choose Advanced settings from the list. Here, look for IP Settings : Select it and make sure the settings are turned to Automatic . Restart your console and see if this helps.

Check your firewall settings : Your router or gateway may have firewall settings that are preventing a proper Xbox Live connection, especially if you recently replaced these devices. Check for any built-in firewalls by visiting device settings, and disable them to see if this makes a difference.

If all your online games are lagging no matter which you try, this indicates a problem with your overall internet connection. You can test this quickly by going to Profile and System on your Xbox, choosing Settings , and choosing Network Settings in the first section. Now select Test network speed and statistics, Detailed network statistics,  or a similar option available on your version of Xbox.

This will give you details on the speed, packet loss, and latency. For most online gaming with other players, you want a connection that’s at least 2MBps, with latency under 200 milliseconds and preferably no or very little packet loss. If it looks like you don’t have enough bandwidth, try disconnecting other (less important) devices in your home from the internet and see if your performance improves.

Stop playing games or streaming content, both on your Xbox and on other devices. You want to give your Xbox Live download as much bandwidth as possible to get the job done. Otherwise, there’s not much you can do but wait. Set downloads to happen overnight if you are downloading a lot of data all at once. If it looks like a download has frozen, test your internet connection to see if anything is wrong.

I can’t capture the content that I want

To capture what just happened, press the Xbox button and press the X button, which will automatically capture the last 30 seconds for you. If you want to capture a longer period of time, press the View button (the dual-window icon next to the Start button) and choose what period you want to capture, up to two minutes.

To record what you will be doing, press the Xbox button, choose Capture & share , and select Start recording . Open the guide again and press X to stop recording whenever you want. You can usually record for up to 10 minutes … if you have room to store the video file.

This often indicates that your NAT setting is too restrictive. Changing your NAT type to “open” is the best way to solve this: You can see your NAT type in Network settings on your Xbox at any time. Changing it is a little more complicated, because it varies based on the router you have. Generally, you will need to visit your router or internet connection settings, and look for an option to enable UPnP , or Universal Plug and Play . This should switch your NAT type to open. Xbox has more information that may be able to help you in this process.

Like any other consoles, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S aren't without issues. Even after several years on the market giving Microsoft time to push out updates and fixes, there are still some issues that can crop up.

In this guide, we're going to cover the most common Xbox Series X problems, as well as how to fix them. You can also keep up with all updates, known issues, and potential fixes directly from Xbox. Get in touch with Microsoft Before getting to any fixes, take note of the different contact options for Microsoft and Xbox support. There's a robust support system in place, and for certain issues, you'll need to contact Microsoft for a repair or replacement. If you have a smaller issue that we haven't covered in this guide, you can ping us on Twitter @DigitalTrends so we can add it to this guide, as well as tag @XboxSupport. That seems to be the fastest support route.

Microsoft revealed the final two games that will be available for free as part of the Games with Gold program for Xbox Live Gold. The service isn't really going out with a bang, but one of the games is a solid Souls-inspired indie platformer that's worth a download as Games with Gold's swan song.

The two games Microsoft will give away are Level 91 Entertainment's Inertial Drift and Robi Studios' Blue Fire. Inertial Drift is a vibrant, neon-infused arcade racer with unique twin-stick controls that players have to master in order to steer and drift properly. Racing game fans should get a kick out of it, but the game to really care about in this final batch is Blue Fire. Blue Fire is a 3D platformer, but it takes more inspiration from the likes of Dark Souls and Hollow Knight than Super Mario 64. While it's a pretty fast-paced platformer with a satisfying dash move at its core, it makes players platform through pretty dark and moody settings that interconnect like Dark Souls areas do. The game also sometimes places emphasis on combat, which is usually a bad sign in platformers, fights can actually sometimes be pretty tough and satisfying in Blue Fire.

Microsoft finally made the decision to move on from its monthly online-access subscription service Xbox Live Gold. On September 14, Xbox Live Gold will transform into Xbox Game Pass Core, with current Gold subscribers automatically gaining a Game Pass Core subscription.

An Xbox Live subscription tied to online play has existed in some form since Xbox Live launched in 2002, but Xbox Live Gold as we now know it truly came into form in July 2013 when Microsoft started the Games with Gold program that gave subscribers free games each month in addition to that online access. Although Microsoft rolled back some online restrictions in 2021, Games with Gold continues to this day. That will all end when Game Pass Core launches.

Account has been locked

If you tried to sign in to your account and received a message that it's been locked, it's because activity associated with your account might violate our Terms of Use .

How to unlock your Microsoft account

To unlock your account, sign in to get a security code.

You can use  any  phone number to request the security code.

The phone number doesn't  need to be associated with your account.

The phone doesn't need to be a smartphone, or connected to the internet, it just needs to be able to receive text messages.

You may have to create a new password. Read tips on how to create a strong password .

Select the option that describes your experience

I don't see the "next" option when signing in.

If you don't see the Next option when you sign in, your account has been locked due to suspicious activity or for violating of Microsoft’s Terms of Use agreement.

For help reinstating your account, select the link in the window that begins with  aka.ms/ . Follow the instructions provided. Once we receive your information, we'll review the request to unlock your account.

Important:

After you submit the form, a Microsoft Online Safety support agent will review it and contact you by email. Please do not submit additional requests, as this may slow down our response time.

To protect your account and its contents, our support agents and advocates can only send password reset links or access and change account details when you submit the account reinstatement form.

I didn't receive a security code

You can use any phone number that can receive text messages; it doesn’t need to be associated with your account.

We won't use or give out the phone number, and the code sent to it will expire after 10 minutes.

This means you could use a friend or work colleague's phone without compromising your account security.

The quickest way to get your account unlocked is by requesting and entering a security code online. If you haven’t tried unlocking your account online, we recommend you start there.

Text message with code.

If you see a "usage limit exceeded" error message when requesting a security code, this could mean the phone number has been used too many times in a short period of time, or that we've detected something suspicious about the phone number.

Why accounts are locked and disabled

Microsoft accounts are usually locked if the account holder has violated our Microsoft Services Agreement . Here are some common reasons why accounts are locked, though not all account locks occur for these reasons:

Malware: Sending intentionally unwanted or harmful code or software.

Phishing: Stealing private information from others by tricking or spoofing them into providing it.

Interfering with, harming, or spoofing Microsoft networks, services, or other systems.

Don’t send unsolicited promotional or commercial content.

Don’t send content to people you don’t know or to many people at the same time.

FIX! | Xbox 360 Xbox Live Sign In Problems - Feb/Mar 22

[UPDATE 3/19/22: These methods no longer work; we will need to wait for MS engineers to fix the issues]

To escalate the issue on Microsoft's side, PLEASE CONTACT THEM USING THIS LINK!! Contact us | Xbox Support

❗It may prompt you to use their chat bot, but when the window opens, type "real person" to be connected to a real employee. ❗

As many have noticed recently, there have been issues regarding signing into XBOX live on the Xbox 360.

I found two answers online - One of the two options will always work

I made this discussion for it to be clear how to fix the issue instead of scrolling through posts!

Original Forums:

360 help! - Microsoft Community - user @CR144 posted solution #1

Xbox Login Problem error code 80151103 - Microsoft Community - user @grmxo posted solution #2

SOLUTION ONE:

this seems to be the most functional solution:

1. Delete your profile from your Xbox 360

2. Hit the xbox button and sign in but hit download profile

3. Then put in your email and password

4. When the progress bar appears and get to roughly 10% of the way to 100%, press the Xbox button on your controller. This will make the Xbox freak out for a moment and freeze. This will also make it so the profile doesn't download properly.

5. Now once your xbox unfreezes and is back on the homescreen. Hit the xbox button again and hit sign in. You'll see your profile there, but it's greyed out cause it didn't transfer over properly. instead of hitting it, hit the download profile button again.

6. This time when you put in your email and password, it will work and it will bypass whatever dumb thing that was happening that caused the 80151103 error. The bar will fill and then the xbox will freeze again.

7. Leave it for a few minutes, and then turn it off. Turn it back on.

8. Suddenly your profile is there and you can sign in and no error. DONE!

SOLUTION TWO:

this MAY work... it is hit or miss for some people

1. Go to https://account.xbox.com/en-us/profile/protection  in your internet browser

2. Sign in with your account

3. Click the green button "Require Profile Download"

4. Restart your console

5. Remove your profile (if you haven't already)

6. Sign in by downloading profile in "Sign In" menu

7. Your profile should download as expected now.

How satisfied are you with this reply?

Can you follow solution one please and describe to me what it said along with what you did along the way? We might be able to troubleshoot the issue from there.

Steps 1 to 5 work properly.

Now at Step 6 i put my email and password in it still give me the same error again at 20%:

"Sorry there's a problem with the credentials that you are using to sign in. Go to account.live.com to fix the problem. 80151103"

1 person found this reply helpful

Here's my idea:

Try to find out around how long it takes to get to the error after you enter your password, and it fails

Then subtract about 2 seconds the next time and instead of freezing the Xbox at 20%, freeze it at wherever that point is

So, for example:

Say you count it and it takes 7 seconds to error out after you enter your password

The next time, press the Xbox button on the controller after 5-6 seconds to freeze it

Then, after your profile shows up in gray, do a soft reset (just turn off the console *DONT UNPLUG* and restart)

After the console restarts, try to sign in again without freezing the Xbox

Another thing people appear to be saying is that you just must keep trying until at some point it begins to work... Who knows how long this may be but it's worth a try to give an attempt a few times a day

I have tried over 100 times, also this suggestion, different frames pushing xbox button...nothing works :/

I have tried both methods with no luck. I feel like "just keep trying" isn't really a solution, since what we're trying to do is pretty clearly to glitch past an internal system that is blocking our access.

It feels as though this is a "forced obselecence" move, where Microsoft is trying to gate X360 profiles and block their access, to wean people off the console to justify no longer supporting it. The YouTube app on X360 did the same about two years ago - you had to "glitch" logging out and into your XBL profile to get the app to load, as though it was checking for X360 users and actively blocking them. Amazon Prime has also withdrawn support for the X360 version of their app.

I don't own an Xbox One - I have no interest in buying one. I use an X360 as a glorified Smart TV device to use Netflix (and previously, Amazon Prime when it was available and YouTube before it became to arduous to bother making work). And, very rarely, to play older games. Xbox 360s (plural) gave me 11 years of good gaming before I could afford a PC several years ago.

My Xbox 360 actually got bricked earlier in the month, trying to process being asked for my account login credentials. After entering my login details, it got the red dot of death. From looking online, the Southbridge chip may have spontaneously died. Not one problem in almost 11 years of hard graft on that one console.

I had to buy another preowned Xbox 360 on eBay, just to try these fixes, and it refuses to download my profile despiter 20ish attempts. My XBL profile is now, effectively, lost, unless I fork out the £150 plus for a used older-model Xbox One.

I cannot see any other way that this isn't intentional on Microsoft's part, and if it is, that is truly cancerous business practice.

Guess I'd better cancel my £50/pa Xbox Live Gold membership.

I totally see where you're coming from - this whole thing shouldn't be an issue in the first place. I'm really sorry to hear about the RROD.

I think the best course of action is just to call MS support and complain until they're forced to do something about the problem (this has worked before)

I really wish you good luck, and if I find another solution, I will post it along with the others ASAP.

An update directly from MS Support:

They've taken down all ways to get into live on the 360 to diagnose why people can't connect (they don't know why yet) and are still intending on getting live servers back to full functionality for the 360.

Apparently, there was another issue regarding this last month that was temporarily fixed but is proving to cause issues again.

I tried signing in following my methods on a secondary 360, to which it failed as you were saying.

I genuinely think the best thing to do at this point is just to call MS support by going to this link: Contact us | Xbox Support , then try to chat online to the bot, type real person, and then arrange for a call back in an effort to escalate the case for the issues going on.
