Even if you find 5E’s rules not quite to your liking, or want to shake things up a bit, there’s an entire set of variant rules to change up your game (including lasting injuries, different resting times, and an alternative method of initiative ).

Monster Manual (MM)

all books dnd 5e

The Monster Manual is every DM’s bread and butter for interesting and downright nasty things to throw at players. The beginning of the book breaks down all you need to know about how different abilities and parts of a monster’s statblock function. The rest of the book is packed full of the art, statistics , and lore you need to run iconic Dungeons & Dragons creatures in your game. A DM must-have!

Supplement books

Supplements are how the game grows and develops over time, with a new one of some variety usually released each year, bringing everything from new races and subclasses, to new backgrounds and monsters.

Volo’s Guide to Monsters (VGtM)

all books dnd 5e

Volo’s is a monster ecology book at heart, written by the in-world adventuring author, Volothamp Geddarm, and provides an in-depth look at some iconic monsters of DnD history. It gives DMs variants of these monsters, along with maps of their camps/lairs, and rafts of other nasties to send against your unwitting players. For the players, an extension of races to choose from (seven), and even the option to play traditionally ‘monstrous’ races like Goblins (another six options).

Xanathar’s Guide to Everything (XGtE)

all books dnd 5e

This humorous supplement is heavily player-focused, giving us 31 subclasses including the Samurai Fighter , Drunken Master Monk , and the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian . That’s not all, though, this book is full of creative tools for players and DMs alike. Color commentary is provided by the infamous Xanathar themself, the beholder leader of the Xanathar crime guild based in the Forgotten Realms city of Waterdeep.

Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes (MToF)

all books dnd 5e

Another lore and DM-heavy supplement. MToF presents more detailed folklore about the various races of the multiverse, as well as a long list of interesting and very challenging new monsters. You’ll also get access to new race options for players, including both varieties of the psionic gith and subraces for elves.

Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything (TCoE)

all books dnd 5e

This supplement brings with it a staggering 22 new subclasses. There are variant rules for changing your race (referred to as Origin) stats, optional rules for each class, new feats , and magic items to sink your teeth into (or in the case of magical tattoos, to sink into you!). For DMs, there’s a broad new toolbox containing help with puzzles along with examples thereof, guidance on session zero, rules to build sidekicks for your players, and new ways to interact with the environment.

Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons (FToD)

all books dnd 5e

A must-have supplement for any dragon lover, this book provides a large bestiary of new dragons and dragon-themed monsters, new magic items, and new player options, including feats, as well as new versions of the dragonborn . The lore revealed sheds new light on the magical nature of dragons, their hoards, and their ties to other worlds and gods.

Monsters of the Multiverse (MotM)

all books dnd 5e

Part of the Rules Expansion Gift Set, this book compiles PC race options and monsters previously published in books such as Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes. This book aims to modernize these things, bringing older content more in line with the current 5E design philosophy, giving this treatment to over 30 updated player races and over 250 redesigned monster stat blocks!

Bigby Presents Glory of the Giants (BPGotG)

all books dnd 5e

Glory of the Giants is an expansive resource that uncovers the world of giants for both players and Dungeon Masters. It offers unique character options like a new barbarian subclass and immersive backgrounds. For DMs, there are 30+ magic items, vivid lair maps, and 70+ new giants and creatures. Beyond facts, the book delves into giant hierarchies, religions, and societies while equipping DMs to bring them to life.

The Practically Complete Guide to Dragons

all books dnd 5e

Curated by the esteemed wizard Sindri Suncatcher, this tome offers unique insights into these legendary creatures. From black dragon incubation rituals to the nuances of dragon language , this book is a tribute to the wonder dragons bring to Dungeons & Dragons. Whether you’re a Dungeon Master or a fantasy enthusiast, this guide unlocks the enchanting realm of dragons, inviting your imagination to take flight alongside these majestic beings.

Campaign Settings

The default world for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition is the Forgotten Realms (Faerun, and specifically, the Sword Coast), but what if you need more information on the world to run your adventure? What if you’d be more interested in another setting, that provides different norms and challenges? That’s where these books come in!

(Note: Whilst it’s common for setting books to contain an adventure, these adventures are usually very short and meant as a suggestion of how to play in that world. Due to the shortness of these adventures, they’re being listed only in this section and not in the Adventures section later on.)

Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide (SCAG)

all books dnd 5e

This was the very first supplement published for 5E. This book offers a vast amount of lore on the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, including the various nations, factions, and deities involved. The sections covering races and classes within the Realms offer new player options and a slew of backgrounds!

Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica (GGtR)

all books dnd 5e

The first of two Magic the Gathering (MTG) crossover books, GGtR provides all of the lore you need to run a game in the city world of Ravnica. Players will find backgrounds to represent whatever guild they’re a member of, new races, and subclasses. GGtR also contains a bevy of new and interesting magic items. Additionally, it also includes the adventure Krenko’s Way as an introduction to a more metropolitan way of playing for characters of 1-2 level.

Acquisitions Incorporated (AI)

all books dnd 5e

Are you a fan of the long-running, office humor campaign as seen on Penny Arcade? Then this is the book for you! Offering guidance on running your own franchise, and reflavoring classes to a more urban, ‘office-friendly version of themselves. If you can afford the royalties there are even new spells for all you aspiring Jim Darkmagic fans. It includes the adventure the Orrery of the Wanderer for characters of level 1-6.

Eberron: Rising from the Last War (RftLW)

all books dnd 5e

An iconic world originating from a setting design contest all the way back in 3rd edition, Eberron gives us the concept of ‘wide magic’ instead of high magic. This is the prevalence of cantrip-level magic and low-level magic items, with the scarcity of mid to high-level magic effects. The result is a very modern setting with magical solutions for everyday problems, all within a backdrop of post-war intrigue and, at times, unrest. RftLW brings a wide selection of Eberron mainstay races, the Artificer class (later reprinted in TCoE), the adventure Forgotten Relics (for 4-6 characters of 1st level), as well as all necessary information needed to run your own adventure in Khorvaire.

Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount (EGtW)

all books dnd 5e

The official WoTC tie-in to the critically acclaimed Critical Role (the previous Tal’Dorei setting book is 3rd party content) takes you to the continent of Wildemount (location of CR campaign 2) in Exandria, a world created by Matt Mercer. In addition to the lore relating to the deities, factions, and history of the land, EGtW also provides new options for existing races (like your dragonborns with tails? Without? It’s got both!), and races published elsewhere ( aasimar , goblinoids, and so on). Magic is a little different in Exandria, bringing time-and-gravity-based magic (or Chronurgy and Graviturgy through Dunamancy if you’re a scholar, or just like fancy words) that give us the Echo Knight Fighter and two new Wizard subclasses (complete with on-theme spells). Now, you might be thinking, but how do I run an adventure in this kind of setting? What monsters do I use? Oh boy, does this book have you covered, with four adventures for levels 1-3.

Mythic Odysseys of Theros (MOoT)

all books dnd 5e

The second DnD/MTG crossover setting on our list, MOoT provides a DM all they need to run a campaign in the high-action world of Theros, heavily inspired by ancient Greece. Want to be a sandal-wearing, spear , and shield-wielding Argonaut in training, but find the reality of 5E breastplate a little underwhelming? Then MOoT certainly delivers in terms of magic items, which range from molten bronze armor to literal weapons of gods to wield in their name. That last part probably sounds a little much, but the Artifact-level weapons and their quests tie directly into the book’s Piety system. This is basically a reputation score with your chosen god , when you get your score past certain milestones, you receive a powerful benefit (detailed in the entry of your god). Certainly not a low magic setting! MOoT also provides new race options (Leonin and Satyrs; as well as republishing Centaurs , Minotaurs , and Tritons) and subclasses (the College of Eloquence Bard and the Oath of Glory Paladin ). The included adventure, No Silent Secret, is for levels 1-2 and a good introduction into the glorious world of heroic deeds and godly wrath.

Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft (VRGtR)

all books dnd 5e

Famed monster scholar and hunter, Rudolph Van Richten, shares his wealth of knowledge to help our poor mortal minds begin to comprehend the Ravenloft setting and its many Domains of Dread. Players can enjoy two new subclasses (the College of Spirits Bard and Undead Pact Warlock ), new lineage options (including the dhampir, hexblood, and reborn). Additionally, Dark Gifts to show what your time in the domains has earned you, new backgrounds, and trinkets to help you feel at home, in the home of DnD horror (I know, you’d have thought it’d be the Tomb of Horrors right?). DMs can salivate over rules to customize existing Dark Lords and their domains (or create their own), new monsters, over thirty new and familiar Domains of Dread (including Barovia from CoS), and of course, a horrific adventure to get the old blood pumping.

Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos (SaCoC)

all books dnd 5e

The Gathering crossover, this book introduces us to the setting of Strixhaven , a university that uses magic to enhance studies of all disciplines. This book gives us the Owlin race, two new feats, rules for how to handle NPC relationships, how to run the academia of a school, and four adventures. These adventures cover levels 1-4, 4-6, 6-8, and 8-10 and can be used together to guide a party through the full university experience, or individually as best suits your table. If you’re interested in how a magical school may work as a setting in DnD, are looking for interesting monsters to use in your own homebrew campaign, or are just looking for an interesting read there’s something here for you.

Spelljammer: Adventures in Space (SAiS)

all books dnd 5e

The first of its kind in 5E’s history, this slipcase contains three 64-page books, a DM screen, and a double-sided poster map ! The books are The Astral Adventurer’s Guide aimed at giving DMs and players all the information they need to play in space, including six new player races ( Astral Elves , Autogomes, Hadozee , Giff , Plasmoids , and Thri-Kreen); Boo’s Astral Menagerie will bring us over 60 new creatures suitable for a Spelljammer campaign; and finally, Light of Xaryxis is a campaign broken into twelve ‘episodes’ that cover levels 5-8.

Whether you are nervous to write your own adventure, playing Adventurers League (official, organized DnD 5E games), or just want to see what the seasoned team of writers over at WoTC has in store for your unfortunate characters, the official published adventures are for you. There are usually around two main adventure books published each year (some campaigns unto themselves, others a collection of shorter adventures you can pick and choose from or even chain together) alongside other, smaller, adventures included in setting books (as we have already covered), or released in aid of charity. As with our other sections, these books will be in publication order and include notes about which can be easily linked together.

Lost Mine of Phandelver (LMoP)

all books dnd 5e

The original starter set from 5E’s inception, this adventure will take characters from 1st to 5th level and if bought physically, includes a DM screen, character sheets, and other goodies. This story begins with our heroes as humble caravan escorts to the town of Phandalin (don’t worry, I get confused it isn’t the name in the title, too), and get dragged into a quest to save hostages from bandits and ultimately discover the titular mine itself.

Tyranny of Dragons (ToD)

all books dnd 5e

Hoard of the Dragon Queen (HotDQ) is first part of the Tyranny of Dragons storyline, HotDQ will take characters from 1st level to 7th. The story revolves around the Cult of the Dragon, an organization usually devoted to the creation of undead dragons to fulfill a prophecy, but times have changed. A new leader  (with a powerful voice in his ear) has been collecting fabled dragon masks to release the dragon goddess, Tiamat, from her prison in the Nine Hells. Your party starts off straight into the action, coming into the town of Greenest as it is besieged by a small army assembled by the cult and led by a blue dragon. Needless to say, the action just continues from here! The Rise of Tiamat (RoT) is the second and final part of the Tyranny of Dragons storyline, picking up where HotDQ leaves off, taking characters from levels 8 to 15. The secret alliance between the Dragon Cult and Red Wizards of Thay has been exposed as an opposing alliance raises in opposition to them on the Sword Coast. The plot of the cult is advancing, however. With all of the dragon masks, they seek enough blood sacrifices to finally complete their ritual and free Tiamat from her infernal prison.

Princes of the Apocalypse (PotA)

all books dnd 5e

Bad omens are spreading in the northern region of the Forgotten Realms; marauders and monsters bring chaos and destruction as shadowy forces stand in the background , gathering power to bring about the apocalypse. PotA is an adventure that takes characters from 3rd level to 15th level, however, additional adventures are provided in the book for players that wish to start at 1st level. Cults that worship the great Elemental Evil are gaining power and influence, hoping to coax their own elemental princes into the world. Will your party stand against them in force? Or turn the rival cults against each other to untangle their malevolent plot? A free PDF supplement was released with this adventure, the Elemental Evil Player’s Companion, which included new element-themed races such as the Aarakocra and Genasi, as well as new spells including Control Flames and Bonfire. All content published in this PDF has since been published in multiple hardcover books.

Out of the Abyss (OotA)

all books dnd 5e

A sharp left turn from our previous starts as caravan guards, OotA starts off with your adventurers captured by drow for slaves in the subterranean Underdark. As this adventure begins at 1st level (and goes up to 15th!), this is a daunting start as the PCs have to break free of their restraints and escape with whatever allies they’ve made whilst imprisoned. Evading the drow and their priestesses aren’t the only hazard, as this adventure transitions to take on the mighty Demon Lords themselves. Warning to you, fellow arachnophobes, the drow are a spider-based society with a lot of creepy crawly creatures in tow.

Curse of Strahd (CoS)

all books dnd 5e

Like a bat out of… the Underdark? Straight into a gothic horror to send a chill down your spine and compel you to suddenly invest in very thick turtlenecks. CoS takes players of 1st through 10th level to Barovia–a Domain of Dread ruled by the Dark Lord Strahd, a vampire with a lot of time on his hands and a fondness for toying with mortals like puppets on strings, watching as they turn against each other for his amusement. The party will have to rise to the challenge, scouring the land surrounded by mist, finding items they need to destroy Strahd and save the land. The adventure links with the mini-adventure Death House to level players from 1st to 3rd level before entering Barovia. If your players wish to start off at a higher level you can start at 3rd and jump straight into the mists!

Storm King’s Thunder (SKT)

all books dnd 5e

Giants of all kinds are waging war on the Savage Frontier of Faerun, their Ordning shattered, they begin waging their own personal crusades to set their own breed of giant atop the hierarchy. When giants run amok, the little folk are sure to be trampled underfoot and it’s not long until your band of adventurers is drawn in to learn what is happening and put things right. SKT is intended for characters of 1st through 11th level, but provides an appropriate joining point for 5th level characters (if you want to start at a higher level, or are using it as a follow-up to LMoP).

Tales from the Yawning Portal (TftYP)

all books dnd 5e

This book is actually a collection of seven remastered adventures from DnD’s past and covers a variety of levels to fit every table. The adventures (complete with level range and, for fun, original year of publication) are The Sunless Citadel (1-3, 2000), The Forge of Fury (3-5, 2000), The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan (5-8, 1980), White Plume Mountain (8-9, 1979), Dead in Thay (9-11, 2014), Against the Giants (11-14, 1978) and the ever infamous Tomb of Horrors (high level, 1978). All of these adventures are classics that have been enjoyed by players around the world for decades, why not join them?

Tomb of Annihilation (ToA)

all books dnd 5e

A sweltering jungle, wandering undead, scheming yuan-ti , and a Death Curse that reaches across the entire world. Something sinister is afoot in ToA; resurrection magic has ceased to function, and those previously revived are beginning to wither and die. Your band of adventurers must travel to the peninsula of Chult to figure out what is happening and put a stop to it, but the secret that lies at the heart of a trap-filled tomb is coveted by others with less than altruistic ends. An adventure for characters of level 1-11, with an included ‘meat grinder’ mode if your players are feeling brave. Remember your 10ft poles!

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist (WDH)

all books dnd 5e

Have you ever longed to go on a treasure hunt of epic proportions? To claim riches beyond your wildest dream by nothing but the sharpness of your wits? Well, you may want to bring a sword just in case, but look no further! For characters of levels 1-5, this adventure initially has your players working for the previously mentioned Volo (yes, of Volo’s Guide fame!) but soon after being handsomely rewarded, the trail of a bigger payday looms. Someone has hidden a hoard fit for a dragon, and it’s a race against time for the players to get to it before one of the numerous baddies does. Interested yet? Did I mention the treasure was half a million gold pieces?

Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage (WDotMM)

all books dnd 5e

Have a set of characters based in the city of splendors (perhaps that recently came into a windfall)? Looking for a bigger adventure with bigger rewards to win? Then you should jump straight into this adventure, picking up where WDH left, it will take players from 5th level all the way to 20th level as they traverse each descending level of Undermountain, a true mega-dungeon. With various factions living in the dungeon itself, traps aplenty, and a long-gone mad archmage at the heart of it that doesn’t take well to being interrupted.

Hunt for Thessalhydra

all books dnd 5e

Dungeons & Dragons has broken into the mainstream in recent years in many ways, bringing new players into the game we all love. One of the more notable examples of this is the Netflix show Stranger Things, which revolves around kids that start to live through unusual and supernatural occurrences in their 1980s town. This product is an alternative starter set (the original being LMoP) to induct fans of the show into the game; it comes complete with a copy of the basic rules, character sheets, and its own introductory adventure: The Hunt for Thessalhydra which is for levels 3-4. Written as if by the character Will from the show, the adventure takes the players on a hunt for the Thessalhydra, an eight-headed monster that has been terrorizing the realm. This is a much shorter and higher-powered game than LMoP, with the potential to start off with various magic items if the players if they roleplay just right.

Ghosts of Saltmarsh (GoS)

all books dnd 5e

This book is similar to TftYP as a collection of seven shorter adventures, designed to be stand-alone or interwoven with each other and others (including guidance to connect these adventures to those from TftYP). Unlike that book, however, GoS revolves around the seaport town of Saltmarsh, with plenty of opportunity for swashbuckling shenanigans on the pirate-infested seas over levels 1-12. The book also includes rules for living in Saltmarsh between adventures, where you can buy magic items, engage in carousing, mercenary work, research, or an everyday job if you want a simpler life.

Essentials Kit

all books dnd 5e

A reimagined starter set aimed to be more comprehensive than LMoP, the Essentials Kit includes character sheets, the basic rules, a DM Screen, rules for solo players (including the Sidekick rules, republished in TCoE), and 4 adventures. The adventures are set in the same general area as LMoP, and characters journeying through all of them will run through levels 1-12 (or they can be used individually with other adventures found in this list).

Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus (BGDiA)

all books dnd 5e

Time for those Cleric and Paladin character sheets to be dusted off, this adventure starts in their time to shine. The holy city of Elutrel has disappeared and unless your party can unravel what is going on, its neighbor city, Baldur’s Gate, will join it. Starting in the certainly less-than-holy city of Baldur’s Gate; by the time the players finish the adventure, they would have descended into the first layer of hell. Your heroes would have been at the frontline of the ancient Blood War, used souls as currency, and faced off against the fallen angel ruler of Avernus herself. Did I mention there are really cool, Mad Max-style hell cars? No? Well, now you have another reason to pick this one up!

Dungeons & Dragons vs Rick and Morty

all books dnd 5e

Similar to the Stranger Things starter set we’ve already covered, this is for fans of the popular Adult Swim cartoon. The book is penned by Rick Sanchez himself, complete with color commentary on the tropes that have passed in the game through the years. The mad scientist turned madder Dungeon Master turned maddest mage has also been kind enough to provide us with an adventure, The Lost Dungeon of Rickedness: Big Rick Energy for brave Morties everywhere, taking them from a timid first level to a plucky third level.

Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden (IDRotF)

all books dnd 5e

The icy, windswept tundra north of the Spine of the World mountains has recently got even colder. Auril, the divine embodiment of winter’s fury, has aimed her vengeance at the region, robbing it of any sunlight and causing blizzards and a churning sea to isolate Icewind Dale in a never-ending winter. Your players will move through levels 1-12 as they quest around Ten Towns, helping the locals, foiling disastrous plots, and ultimately taking on Auril herself, to return the sun to the sky and herald in spring.

Details are scarce about this adventure right now, but we do know that it will build on the original starter set, Lost Mines of Phandelver, to create a full campaign based on the popular module. It will be 224 pages long and for PCs of levels 1-12, with 16 new monsters and a poster map. Given the prevalence of black obelisks in many other adventures, this will likely tie to the Vecna storyline coming in 2024.

Table of Contents

Core Rule books

There are the essentials that are needed to get started in the world of Dungeons & Dragons . You could arguably just grab the Player’s Handbook and have quite a lot of the information, but if you want to go more than a few sessions, all 3 are necessary to really create a long-term DnD game. Find a complete list of all the DnD 5e Books in our guide below including DnD Handbooks and DnD Sourcebooks.

DnD Handbooks

Player’s handbook (phb).

The Player’s Handbook is the first stop for every player. It teaches the basic rules of the game, but more importantly, it has all the information on how to build your character . With this are all the spells, abilities, feats, and all the other cool stuff that your character will one day learn while they adventure through the world of DnD.

Out of the three core rulebooks, this is ESSENTIAL. You can’t play without it.

Dungeon Master’s Guide (DMG)

This book is only for the poor soul that takes on the role of DM. It’s chained to their arm by the other players and it never comes off. Just kidding.

The Dungeon Master’s guide is just what the title says. It’s a reference book with a ton of information on how the game is played. It includes extra rules, tips on how to run a game, templates, maps , and lore.

It’s incredibly useful if you’re the Dungeon Master, and it’s pretty useful for players to look through as well to help them get an idea of the rules.

Monster Manual (MM)

This is the most fun of the three core books. The Monster Manual includes all the iconic DnD monsters and creatures as well as stats and abilities. This is essential for the DM to create encounters for their players. There’s everything from kobolds , dragons, bandits, crab people, beholders , and, of course, the tarrasque .

It’s a must-have reference, otherwise, you just have to wing it and hope for the best.

Supplement DnD Books

The supplemental books expand upon the core books. They just add more of everything. More classes, more items, more monsters, and more spells. Each one has its own theme and flare.

Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants

Bigby Presents is a small but content-packed update to the lineup of DnD supplement books. It was released on August 15, 2023.

The update as you might guess from the names focuses on adding giants into the mix. Like some of the other main supplements, this one is introduced by a major player in the Forgotten realms similar to Tasha or Xanathar. Bigby the Wizard is our guide for this newest tome to add to your collection.

This supplement focuses heavily on giants. This adds extra rules and information for adding giants into your campaign. It’s geared more towards higher-level characters. This is mostly information that’s good for Dungeon Masters. There’s less information and customization options for players, but there is some good stuff, especially for Barbarian players.

This supplement includes:

Subclass

  • Path of the Giant
  • Rune Shaper
  • Strike of the Giants
  • Ember of the Fire Giant
  • Fury of the Frost Giant
  • Guile of the Cloud Giant
  • Keenness of the Stone Giant
  • Soul of the Storm Giant
  • Vigor of the Hill Giant

Backgrounds

  • Giant Foundling
  • Rune Carver

Bigby Presents: Glory of Giants

Volo’s Guide to Monsters (VGtM)

Think of Volo’s guide as an extension to the Monster Manual. It adds a lot of new lore to iconic Dungeons & Dragons monsters. It adds new information, monster variants, and even helps build encounters by giving the DM access to maps of different monster lairs and dens.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about Volo’s guide is the extra races that it adds.

For regular character options, Volo adds:

  • Aasimar – Celestials like angels or genies
  • Firbolg – Cousins to giants
  • Goliath – Strong tribal mountain people
  • Kenku – Sentient Bird People
  • Lizardfolk – Lizard People
  • Tabaxi – Cat People
  • Triton – Fish or Naga-like People

There’s also a section that adds playable monster races.

  • Yuan-Ti Purebloods

Xanathar’s Guide to Everything (XGtE)

As the name might suggest Xanathar’s Guide to Everything adds a little bit of… everything.

The biggest reason to get Xanathar’s guide is for the subclasses. This supplemental book adds a ton of new subclasses and rules for each.

  • Path of the Ancestral Guardian
  • Path of the Storm Herald
  • Pat of the Zealot
  • College of Glamour
  • College of Swords
  • College of Whispers
  • Forge Domain
  • Grave Domain
  • Circle of Dreams
  • Circle of the Shephard
  • Arcane Archer
  • Way of the Drunken Master
  • Way of the Kensei
  • Way of the Sun Soul
  • Oath of Conquest
  • Oath of Redemption
  • Gloom Stalker
  • Horizon Walker
  • Monster Slayer
  • Inquisitive
  • Swashbuckler
  • Divine Soul
  • Shadow Magic
  • Storm Sorcery
  • The Celestial
  • The Hexblade

DMs will also get a lot of useful new information by adding new tables, helpful systems to build encounters, new revamped trap rules, and guides to add non-combat downtime to your game.

Xanathar's Guide to Everything

Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes (MToF)

This supplemental book is a big boost to DMs. The tome of foes adds a ton of lore, but this time for various races and enemies.

Mordenkainen’s Tome takes races seriously. It adds a lot of new player options for player characters by adding completely new races to choose from as well as adding subrace options for existing races. Tieflings in particular get a wide variety of options here with 8 new subrace options to choose from.

Classic DnD races aren’t forgotten either. The tome even dives deeper into gnomes, elves, and dwarves. In addition to all of this, there are a ton of new monsters arranged by challenge rating which is a huge boon for DMs when creating encounters, and in true DnD fashion, it includes a ton of new lore for all those fun new creatures.

Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes

Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything (TCoE)

Tasha’s Cauldron adds another big surge of information to your DnD world. This supplement focuses on new subclasses for players and new rules and tools for Dungeon Masters.

Each of the 12 standard classes gets 2-3 new subclasses to bolster the party. Well… relatively new. Some of the classes were published before in different campaign modules, but are officially printed here in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. All in all, there are 26 new subclasses for players to choose from.

Dungeon Masters will have fun with new tools like rules and guides for having a Group Patron that supports the entire group and adds another dimension to group dynamics and goals.

Tasha narrates this book similarly to Xanathar’s guide, and she adds a lot of new information when it comes to spells and magical items. She adds 21 new spells, 36 magical items , and rules for magical tattoos.

Tasha's Cauldron of Everything

Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons (FToD)

Fizban the Archmage is our guide here, and he takes the Dragon portion of Dungeons and Dragons very seriously.

Unsurprisingly, Treasury of Dragons adds a ton of new information, all geared toward dragons.

Players will find they have more customizable options for Dragonborn characters, and subclasses for Monks and Rangers that give them draconic ancestry. There’s also more in-depth lore featuring the mighty dragons Bahamut and Tiamat as well as introducing brand new dragons into 5e. If you’re looking for a classic dragon experience in your DnD this is going to be incredibly useful to both the DM and the players.

Fizban's Treasury of Dragons

Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse (MPMM)

Although one of the newest books to come out, Monsters of the Multiverse has quickly become an essential book in the DnD 5e repertoire. It includes 250 new monsters and state blocks as well as reworking old ones with the added story, history, and backgrounds. In addition to this, it also adds dozens of new playable races to the game. This sourcebook alone adds a ton of available options for your players and it’s perfect for those who want to try something a little different from Orc, Elf, or Dwarf.

Campaign Settings

These books all bring the official world of Dungeons & Dragons to life. This is in the Forgotten Realms universe. These are fantastic resources for Dungeon Masters whether you’re brand new or have been playing since Gary Gygax’s first edition. These are pre-built campaigns that can be run as-is or customized to your group’s playing style.

The Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide (SCAG)

This first book is a bit of a mixture of a campaign guide and a supplement guide. The Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide was one of the first books published and a lot of the information has since been republished in other guides.

Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide gives some extra information and variant classes but mostly think of it as an introduction to Faerun and the Sword Coast. This is where a lot of the big modules take place.

Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide

Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica (GGtR)

Ravnica exists on its own plane. It’s a sprawling interconnected cityscape that’s filled with guild halls, ruins, and slums.

There is an issue, though. Ravnica is not only on a different plane of existence it’s also a completely different franchise.

For those of you in the know, Ravnica is a part of the Magic: The Gathering world, and The Guildmaster’s Guides to Ravnica is one of two crossover sourcebooks that gives players rules to explore some of Magic: The Gathering’s interesting lore.

Guildmasters' Guide to Ravnica

Acquisitions Incorporated (AI)

Penny Arcade’s webcomic has been around since 1998 and has been creating fun content ever since. Acquisitions Incorporated was originally their podcast showcasing DnD 4e, but has since adapted to the newest 5e.

This collaboration sourcebook gives players everything they’ll need to create their own pseudo-corporate adventuring company in the 5e DnD world.

Acquisitions Incorporated

Eberron: Rising from the Last War (RftLW)

Eberron is DnD’s grittier older brother that stays out late and smokes cigarettes. Eberron came from, Wizards of the Coast contest winner Keith Baker and has been a staple in the DnD world ever since.

This sourcebook brings in a ton of information adapted for 5e as players struggle with a post-apocalyptic setting.

Eberron: Rising from the Last War

Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount (EGtW)

This is a massive injection of fresh content from the ever-popular DnD troupe, Critical Role. They previously published a different book, the Tal’Dorei Campain Setting, but this is the first official module published in collaboration with Wizards of the  Coast.

It has a ton of new monsters and character classes and comes with pre-built campaigns perfect for players to test out the new rules and content.

Explorer's Guide to Wildemount

Mythic Odysseys of Theros (MOoT)

This sourcebook adds everything players and DMs will need to create their own adventures in the Theros setting.

This is another Magic the Gathering crossover, but this time it’s heavily influenced by ancient Greece. It’s a highly thematic setting and adds some variant races for players to create Centaurs, Tritons, and Satyrs. It’s the perfect supplement if you plan on running a Greek mythology -inspired campaign.

Mythic Odysseys of Theros

Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft (VRGtR)

If you’re creating a horror -themed campaign, this sourcebook is a must. Ravenloft is known for its creatures that go bump in the night.

It includes new rules to create some truly horrific monsters and has some new thematically appropriate subclasses. Perhaps the biggest takeaway is the incredibly popular Hexblade Warlock subclass that is introduced here.

If you’re looking for a dark, horror-themed setting, then this is a must-have.

Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft

Strixhaven: A Curriculum of Chaos (SaCoC)

Welcome to Strichave, the magical university where owls don’t deliver your mail, they’re your classmates.

Strixhaven is another crossover setting from Magic the Gathering that gives players and DMs information on the University of Strixhaven. Included are several new adventure modules that will get your students from freshman spellcasters to full graduates of the university. It also includes new race options that add Owlin , an owl-based race that’ll fit right at home in the university.

Create your own school, explore Strixhaven, or even try and recreate your own Hogwarts. That’s the beauty of DnD. You can create whatever you want.

Strixhaven: Curriculum of Chaos

DnD Adventures Books

This next set of books are Adventure modules. They’re pre-built campaigns that will help dungeon masters run a campaign within the DnD world from start to finish. Some will be designed to take a level 1 player all the way up to max level, and others will be brutally difficult for a full party of level 20 characters.

They are full of characters, backstories, maps , and anything else a budding DM will need to run their first campaign…or their 100th.

Lost Mine of Phandelver (LMoP)

This is the classic DnD starter campaign. It came with the original starter set that included everything a new player needed to jump right into the game.

Players will be introduced to the DnD world as they start as caravan guards at level 1 and grow into the heroic adventurers they were always destined to be.

This is a starter campaign that takes characters from levels 1-5.

Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set

Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk

Ready to return to the Lost mines of Phandelver?

Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk is a continuation of the introductory adventure included in the DnD starter kit. The starter adventure brings players from level 1-5 while introducing all of the basic rules and with a starter campaign. What happens after you finish though and want to keep going?

Before you had to simply create your adventuring campaign, but now with the release of Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk players can now continue on where the story left off. This supplement includes the original starter campaign but now expands and builds upon it by bringing your characters up to level 12 upon completion.

It’s a fantastic supplement and rounds out the starter campaign into a full-fledged adventure. In addition, there are multiple supplements like maps, bestiaries, and magic item lists for use in the included campaign or to help you build your own world.

It takes everything that the starter set gives you and then keeps adding content until you have a full supplement.

Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk

Hoard of the Dragon Queen (HotDQ)

Part of the Tyranny of Dragons campaign, Hoard of the Dragon Queen is another excellent place to start for new players. It sets up an epic campaign focusing on dragons and Tiamat the Evil Dragon queen in particular.

Players start out saving a simple farming town from bandit attacks and will quickly find themselves drawn into a world of dragon cultists, political intrigue, and dragons.

This campaign is meant for players at level 1 and brings them to level 7. The story continues with Rise of Tiamat.

Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Princes of the Apocalypse (PotA)

Levels 1-15

Princes of the Apocalypse is one of the older 5e modules but sets the tone for many of the future supplements. Unlike its predecessors, it’s a more open sandbox-type of world that the players can explore on their own.

In the northern end of Faerûn, 4 different elemental cults are gathering power to unleash a devastating elemental blow to the world.

It offers a fun story starting from level 3 that includes a few tutorial missions to introduce the world and power up the players to start the module. It also includes quite a few new monsters of varying challenge ratings that can add quite a bit to any campaign, not just the Princes of the Apocalypse module.

Princes of the Apocalypse

The Rise of Tiamat (RoT)

Levels 8-15

The Rise of Tiamat is the sequel to Horde of the Dragon Queen. This continues directly where Horde of the Dragon Queen leaves our intrepid adventurers and does a fantastic job of putting the final touches on the campaign.

It’s not as free-form as some of the other modules and is a bit of a railroad throughout the two modules, but that makes it excellent for newer players who aren’t quite sure what to expect from a 5e game.

They also do an incredible job of ending the whole thing with the party’s actions having direct consequences on the outcome of the story.

The Rise of Tiamat

Out of the Abyss (OotA)

Out of the Abyss is another module that was one of the first to come out for the 5e system. It improved upon both the Tyranny of Dragons and Princes of the Apocalypse settings.

Players are immediately captured by Drow Elves and taken to the Underdark where they escape and find out that Demons have grown in number and in power in the Underdark. The players will be pulled into the campaign and attempt to thin the demonic plague underground.

The fun part about Out of the Abyss is the setting. The Underdark makes for a compelling and dark setting for players, but the main critique of Out of the Abyss is the number of NPCs introduced.

The story is heavily dependent upon a huge cast of characters that pop in and out of the setting, and it can be a bit overwhelming. It sometimes seems the main characters are not the player characters, but the numerous NPCs that appear in the setting.

Out of the Abyss

Curse of Strahd (CoS)

Levels 1-10

Curse of Strahd is an absolute classic when it comes to DnD modules. If you haven’t played it yet, then now is a good time. It was rewritten and revamped for 5e by the original authors of the classic campaign, and was once again re-released with all new editions and errata in 2020.

The story behind the original scenario came about when the original author was looking to create a Vampire-themed campaign. Vampires in earlier editions were simply an entry in the Monster Manual and he felt that did a disservice to the mythical creature and he invented Strahd, THE VAMPIRE of the DnD world.

It’s a classic and has been getting so much attention for a reason. Thematically, it’s fantastic and it’s an all-around amazing experience. We highly recommend you give it a try.

Curse of Strahd

Storm King’s Thunder (SKT)

Levels 1-11

In the Storm King’s Thunder module, the great Storm King Hekaton is missing. The power vacuum left behind is starting to show devastating results. The various tribes of giants, no longer in check by the Storm King are rampaging throughout the world.

One of the most interesting things about this module is the way it starts. Instead of being heroes of legend, a mercenary team, or the other usual party starting points, Storm King’s Thunder starts players off little more than NPCs. They’re civilians that wander into the world and need to react to stay alive. There’s also a massive sandbox feel that makes Storm King’s Thunder very open-ended and easily customizable to any playing style.

Storm King's Thunder

Tales from the Yawning Portal (TftYP)

Tales from the Yawning portal has good value for money. It’s an anthology of several previous modules put together.

  • The Sunless Citadel
  • The Forge of Fury
  • The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan
  • White Plume Mountain
  • Dead in Thay
  • Against the Giants
  • Tomb of Horrors

Tales From the Yawning Portal

Tomb of Annihilation (ToA)

The Wasting disease known as the Deathcurse slowly kills and prevents any afflicted from ever being revived. It’s a terrible way to die, and it’s slowly spreading.

Tomb of Annihilation is a reimagining of the Tomb of Horrors and is essentially an updated interpretation of the classic that’s been rewritten for 5e. The original Tomb of Horrors was from the mind that brought us all DnD in the first place, Gary Gygax.

It’s a difficult dungeon run with a time limit that takes new characters from levels 1-15 and can be brutally difficult for the unprepared.

D&D: Tomb of Annihilation

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist (WDH)

Welcome to Waterdeep one of the most famous cities in the DnD world. Waterdeep is a huge area to explore and offers an incredible heist setting.

It’s one of the better modules for newer players. It offers a lot of different areas to explore and is a great place to start any epic campaign. Waterdeep as a setting offers near limitless possibilities while still keeping the party together.

Waterdeep: Dragon Heist offers a ton of different adventures that are very easy to mix and match to the party’s needs.

Waterdeep Dragon Heist

Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage (WDotMM)

Levels 5-20

Dungeon of the Mad Mage is the first module intended for higher-level players. The premise is simple and straightforward, there’s a crazy mage that turned a mountain into their personal dungeon filled with trapped adventurers and other nasty creatures. The party is going to go in run through the dungeon and grab the loot.

It’s pretty straightforward, but that doesn’t mean that it’s going to be easy. It’s great for Min/Max players. It’s going to be difficult to complete the dungeon, but if you like tricky situations and power leveling your character to max out stats and abilities this is going to be a great choice for a campaign.

Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage

Stranger Things: The Hunt for Thessalhydra (STHfT)

Levels: Various

This comes with the Stranger Things starter set. You won’t be able to find The Hunt for Thessalhydra by itself unless you buy it second-hand.

The Starter set comes with pre-generated characters and a campaign based on the one Will from Stranger Things ran during the Netflix Original show.

If you’re a fan of the show and wanted to get into DnD after watching it, then this is definitely one of the best places to start. It’s a nice way to get new players into the game especially if their original interest in the game is from Stranger Things.

Stranger Things Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Starter Set

Ghosts of Saltmarsh (GoS)

This is another anthology of modules from previous DnD editions. They’ve all been updated and added to for 5e and include some beloved classics.

Included are:

  • The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh
  • Danger at Dunwater
  • Salvage Operation
  • Isle of the Abbey
  • The Final Enemy
  • Tammeraut’s Fate

Ghosts of Saltmarsh

Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel (JTRC)

Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel is an excellent resource for any DM. It focuses on the new location, The Radient Citadel. Since it is located within the Ethereal plane in between the multiverse it can easily fit into any campaign or with any group of adventurers. It’s filled with 13 stand-alone adventures for levels 1 – 14, so no matter what level you are, you’ll be able to experience some of the wonder and excitement of this new setting.

Keys from the Golden Vault (KGV)

I’m a huge fan of heists in both movies and games. I don’t care what the Rick & Morty episode says, Heists are cool.

That being said Keys from the Golden Vault is one of the last sourcebooks to come out for DnD 5e and I’m jazzed to play it. Keys from the Golden Vault includes 13 short adventures that can be played individually or put together to create a larger narrative. Players will receive quests from the mysterious Golden Vault organization and sneak and scheme their way to riches. Or as a DM you can lift the heists straight out of the book and add them into your own adventures with a few tweaks.

I’m really impressed with this scenario book and I couldn’t wait to get it to the table.

Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse

  • Sigil and the Outlands
  • Turn of Fortune’s Wheel
  • Morte’s Planar Parade

Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse (D&D Campaign Collection)

The Deck of Many Things

Build perfect chaos into your game.

The Deck of Many Things (DnD Expansion)

Essentials Kits

This is another starter kit that helps completely new players jump into the game. It includes edited-down rules that only cover the essentials and comes with several pre-generated campaigns to get players rolling dice quickly.

It’s a nice starter set and comes with everything you’d need to start playing right away, but it’ll eventually run thin if you want to expand the world to everything DnD has to offer. Overall though, it’s perfect for beginners and makes a nice gift for someone who has always shown interest but never had the chance to play.

Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus (BGDiA)

Levels 1-13

Descent into Avernus is one of the larger modules put out. It starts players off in the famed city of Baldur’s Gate . From there, players will eventually go through a story of redemption where they’ll journey into the nine layers of hell itself to find their redemption.

It’s a very story-heavy module that offers great value for money. It has plenty of twists and turns and is perfect for a group that wants to sit down for a long epic campaign.

Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus

Dungeons & Dragons vs Rick and Morty

This one’s a little ridiculous. If you’re a fan of Rick & Morty you probably already have an idea of the shenanigans that you’re in for here.

Similar to the Stranger Things starter set, Rick and Morty created their own themed starter with quick-start rules, pre-generated characters, and the starter campaign The Lost Dungeon Of Rickedness: Big Rick Energy.

If you’ve watched the show you know exactly how this type of campaign is going to go. It’ll be overpowered murder hobos all over the place, but it’ll be a lot of fun.

Dungeons & Dragons vs Rick and Morty

Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden (IDRotF)

Rime of the Frostmaiden comes after the Icewind Dale trilogy, so if you’re familiar with the video games and other settings that Icewind Dale has been adapted to you’ll feel right at home.

The focus in Rime of the Frostmaiden is in the Ten-Towns area. It feels as if John Carpenter took a hand in writing this because it often feels like characters are in the classic horror movie The Thing . There are multiple starting points, and multiple endings included.

Rime of the Frostmaiden is probably better for intermediate-experienced DMs as there’s so much that could potentially happen. If you’re unsure it’s still fun to read as a DM and see all the branching paths and how they could potentially meet up.

Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden

Candlekeep Mysteries (CM)

If you or your players are looking for more of a grab bag, Candlekeep Mysteries is another anthology of all-new modules. It has various levels and mini-adventures that will keep you busy for quite some time. You can also mix and match, throwing your own players into the scenario that best fits the party level.

  • The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces (level 1) by Michael Polkinghorn
  • Mazfroth’s Mighty Digressions (level 2) by Alison Huang
  • Book of the Raven (level 3) by Christopher Perkins
  • A Deep and Creeping Darkness (level 4) by Sarah Madsen
  • Shemshime’s Bedtime Rhyme (level 4) by Ari Levitch
  • The Price of Beauty (level 5) by Mark Hulmes
  • Book of Cylinders (level 6) by Graeme Barber
  • Sarah of Yellowcrest Manor (level 7) by Derek Ruiz
  • Lore of Lurue (level 8) by Kelly Lynne D’Angelo
  • Kandlekeep Dekonstruktion (level 9) by Amy Vorpahl
  • Zikran’s Zephyrean Tome (level 10) by Taymoor Rehman

  • The Book of Inner Alchemy (level 12) by Daniel Kwan
  • The Canopic Being (level 13) by Jennifer Kretchmer
  • The Scrivener’s Tale (level 14) by Brandes Stoddard
  • Alkazaar’s Appendix (level 15) by Adam Lee
  • Xanthoria (level 16) by Toni Winslow-Brill

Candlekeep Mysteries

The Wild Beyond The Witchlight (TWBtW)

This is an interesting module. It takes place in the Feywilds, but that could mean anything really, so any campaign no matter what the setting can throw this fairy carnival into the mix. Another interesting tidbit is that there’s a non-combat way to solve your problems in every single scenario.

I know combat is a huge part of DnD, but it’s honestly usually the oddball ways players complete their objectives that are the most memorable. It’s an interesting book and definitely worth a look if you’re looking to shake up your game with something a little different.

The Wild Beyond the Witchlight: A Feywild Adventure

Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep (CRCotN)

Levels 3-12

Critical Role has slingshotted DnD in the public eye. Our favorite band of voice actors has helped create this new module. This is the second official collaboration between the team at Critical Role and Wizards of the Coast.

It includes a bunch of new thematic adventures in Exandria and even includes an underwater adventure, which I personally think is an underused setting.

Critical Role Presents: Call of the Netherdeep

Dungeons & Dragons: Young Adventurer’s Guide

Although not an official sourcebook, the Young Adventurer’s Guide series is an officially licensed product published by Penguin Random House. They’re designed with the younger crowd in mind and are very handy guides that walk young players through creating their own campaigns using specific features of DnD. Each book talks about a specific aspect of Dnd like, monsters, spells, weapons, and dragons. Included are easy-to-understand rules, adventure hooks, and a simplified guide for young players completely new to the game.

So far there are 6 books in the series:

Beasts & Behemoths

Beasts & Behemoths: A Young Adventurer's Guide

Dragons & Treasures

No creature is more fascinating and terrifying to an adventurer than a dragon! This illustrated guide takes a deeper look at the abilities, personalities, and treasure collections of every major dragon type in Dungeons & Dragons.

Ever wanted to learn more about dragons? Well, now you can! Dragons & Treasures: A Young Adventurer’s Guide takes young players on an in-depth tour of all things dragon. Readers will learn about dragons’ unique characteristics, their fabled treasures, and the wondrous artifacts that they horde in their lairs.

As a beginner book, Dragons & Treasures walks readers through many of the aspects of DnD that might be intimidating for first-time players. It gives helpful advice, storytelling tips, and encouragement all along the way. So, if you want to incorporate more dragon lore into your starter adventure, this is definitely the best place to start.

Extra Life Charity Content

Extra Life is a charity organization that holds events to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network. It started as a bunch of gamers banding together for a good cause and has only grown since. They’re an incredible organization that does a world of good for people in need, and they always have fun ways to bring charity and gaming together.

They’ve put out several different mini-modules for their event. I highly suggest jumping onto their site and signing up for their newsletter. They’re always up to something, it’s always fun, and it’s always for a good cause.

The Lost Kenku

This mini-quest has the party trying to find a lost Kenku wandering in the woods.

One Grung Above

If you want to play a Grung, a humanoid frog person, this supplement gives players a full set of rules including stats.

The Tortle Package

The information here has been republished in The Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount. If you want to add the Tortle race to your campaign you’ll need either one of these supplements. It includes all the rules and stats and how to incorporate them into your campaign.

Volo’s Waterdeep Enchiridion

This supplement adds a ton of information on the city of Waterdeep. It’s an interesting read, but essential if you want to delve a little deeper into the city.

Lost Laboratory of Kwalish

Levels 5-10

This is a reprint of the Advanced DnD campaign,  Expedition to the Barrier Peaks (1980). It’s a pretty interesting blast from the past. It’s a little all over the place thematic-wise, but the 80s were a wild time.

Adventure with Muk

This is an adorable module. It’s filled with cartoony graphics and customized character sheets . It’s also a coloring book. Yes, every single page is meant to be colored in and played with. It’s fun for the whole family.

Infernal Machine Rebuild

This one is really cool, and a must for fans of the Artificer class . In this campaign, players are on the lookout for parts of Lum the Mad’s fabled machine.

Mordenkainen’s Fiendish Folio

If you’ve been playing since the Advanced DnD rules you may find that this looks familiar. It’s a reprint of the DnD Fiendish Folio updated for 5e.

Locathah Rising

Have you ever wanted to be a fish person? Locathah Rising is a mini-campaign for level 9 players and includes the rules for creating your very own Locathah player character.

Domains of Delight

Similar to Shadowfell’s Domains of Dread, the Feywild has its own Domains of Delight. This mini supplement comes with the rules to create your own Feywild Domain with their own Archfey.

Minsc & Boo’s Journal of Villainy

Fans of the classic Baldur’s Gate video game will undoubtedly recognize Minsc and Boo. Their journal adds notes of new monsters and NPCs that DMs can use to add to their own adventures.

Bryan Truong

Before starting GameCows with his wife Kendra, he used to teach English Language Arts in the US. He combined his love of gaming with education to create fun game-based learning lessons until he eventually decided to run GameCows with Kendra full-time. He’s known for pouring over rulebooks in his spare time, being the rule master during game night, and as the perma DM in his DnD group. Bryan loves board games, writing, traveling, and above all his wife and partner in crime, Kendra.

All the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) Books in Fifth Edition (5e)

It really can be overwhelming. In fact, that was what scared me the most once I decided to join my first Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition game. Which books did I need to read to get ready? As someone who loves to digest stupid amounts of information, even more so when they give me an advantage, I was ready to read everything. I wanted all the Dungeons and Dragons books . How many books were there? Following you have the most up to date and exhaustive answer I can come up with.

How many D&D 5e books are there?

It’s not easy to come up with that answer, though. Even something as simple as answering the question “ how many Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition books are there? ” is complicated.

Not only because the number grows every year, but also because there are different types of books to be considered, and this is, of course, just with the official releases by Wizards of the Coast in mind.

If we count the core and suplemental rulebooks (six published and one more coming in November 2020), the campaign guides (another six published), and the adventure books (fourteen if you count the recently released Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden ), we get a total of 26 Dungeons & Dragons 5e books, soon to be 27 .

This number doesn’t take into consideration the boxed starter sets , accessories like the Dungeon Master’s Screen , PDF/print-on-demand releases or the Unearthed Arcana playtest releases , but I will comment on those too further down in this article.

The Different Types of D&D Books

I spoilt this information in the previous section of this article, but let’s get now into more detail regarding what are the different types of Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition books you can find.

Understanding these different types, will help you also get an idea of the sort of books that could be interesting to you and your friends. For instance, if brewing your own adventures, creating worlds from scratch with references to things only you and your friends would understand, there is no point in buying adventure books. If you are a seasoned player, starter sets won’t do it for you. Etc.

So here is the list of different types of Dungeons & Dragons books :

  • Boxed starter sets : these are small compilations of information ready to be stand-alone introductions to people learning to role play.
  • Core and supplemental rulebooks : this type includes both the essential trilogy of books for D&D 5e and other books that complement them in expanding rules, characters and pretty much anything.
  • Campaign guides : a guide for those who prefer to have their adventures in certain settings as opposed to making them up themselves. They explain particular universes and expand on characters and rules.
  • Adventures : stories ready to be played by your group. Perfect if you are looking for a campaign for your games.
  • Screens : not really books, these are usually just a Dungeon Master’s screen with a tiny adventure attached to it.
  • PDF/print-on-demand & Unearthed Arcana playtest releases : digital assets, free to download from Wizards official Dungeons & Dragons website.

Here’s a complete D&D 5e book list

Apr 10, 2023

The next edition of Dungeons and Dragons may be on its way, but 5e will still be relevant. If you’re looking to get into D&D, here’s a full D&D 5e book list.

While it’s coming to an end, Wizards of the Coast has promised that fifth edition would be ported into One D&D. If you’re wondering which books you should get, or just what any of them are about, look no further.

D&D 5e book list

This list is divided into four categories: Adventures, Core books, Campaign books, and Supplemental rulebooks.

Adventures are pre-made adventures for your party to take part in. Core books are the basic books for running the game, nothing more. Campaign books focus on educating a DM about the lore of a world they might run a game in, and Supplemental rulebooks add additional rules for both DMs and players.

  • Player’s Handbook: Contains class rules, character creation, and all the basics for players getting into D&D
  • Dungeon Master’s Guide: Contains rules for Dungeon Masters and tools to help DMs create campaigns
  • Monster Manual: Contains rules for hundreds upon hundreds of classic D&D monsters and enemies

Supplemental Rulebooks

  • Volo’s Guide to Monsters: Introduces new new monsters and new fantasy lineages for players to try out
  • Xanathar’s Guide to Everything: Focuses on new player options with tons of new subclasses
  • Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes: Focuses on extraplanar enemies and allies from D&D’s many exotic planes
  • Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything: Adds tons of new character creation options and new subclasses
  • Monsters of the Multiverse: Focusing on exactly what the title says, everything about monsters that reside in the many planes outside of D&D’s material plane
  • Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons: Focusing on dragons, dragonkind, and the setting of Dragonlance from the classic fantasy novels
  • Boo’s Astral Menagerie: Focusing on monsters and fantastical races that reside within the Astral plane

Campaign Setting

  • The Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide: Details the basics of the Sword Coast, the most popular setting in Faerun for adventures
  • Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica: A spin-off covering the plane of Ravnica from Magic: The Gathering. This book covers the enormous plane-wide city of Ravnica and its 10 guilds
  • Acquisitions Incorporated: Based on the popular comedy D&D podcast, this book fleshes out what it’s like working for adventuring company Acquisitions Incorporated
  • Eberron: Rising from the Last War: Eberron is a setting coming out of a great magical war and is filled with magical technology and powerful political forces
  • Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount: Based off of one of the campaigns from Critical Role , a wildly popular D&D actual play, this campaign book dives into the eastern continent of Wildemount
  • Mythic Odysseys of Theros: Another Magic The Gathering setting, Mythic Odysseys of Theros is a Greek myth-inspired setting with gods and heroes to match
  • Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft: A campaign setting book detailing the grim dark fantasy of Ravenloft in detail, a realm of dark monsters and secrets
  • Astral Adventurer’s Guide: From the same set of books as Boo’s Astral Menagerie, the Astral Adventurer’s Guide covers adventuring in the Astral planes more generally
  • Spelljammer: Adventures in Space: This campaign setting is really many settings in one, addressing the star-spanning science-fantasy setting of Spelljammer

Blog post image

  • Curse of Strahd: Set in Ravenloft, this adventure sees players try to dethrone its dark vampire master, Strahd Von Zarovitch. For levels 1-10
  • Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep: A major adventure set on Critical Role’s continent of Marquet, this adventure takes players from levels 3-12 through seven chapters of adventures
  • Dragon of Icespire Peak: Dragon of Icespire Peak is a started adventure that has players go through levels 1-7, defeating a deadly dragon
  • Dragons of Stormwreck Isle: A Starter Set adventure meant to set level 1 characters off on a life of adventure.
  • Ghosts of Saltmarsh: A sea-themed and underwater series of adventures that takes players from levels 1-12, Ghosts of Saltmarsh will fulfill all your players’ pirate wishes
  • Icewind Dale, Rime of the Frostmaiden: An evil goddess of winter has frozen an area of the world in eternal night, and it’s up to your party to stop them. For levels 1-12
  • Journeys through the Radiant Citadel. Centered around a great citadel that leads to many planes in the D&D multiverse, this houses 13 adventures that take players through levels 1-14
  • Out of the Abyss: Set in the subterranean world of the Underdark, this adventure module takes players through levels 1-15 as they unravel a demonic plot going on below the surface of Faerun
  • Princes of the Apocalypse: Centered around an elemental cult with a dangerous scheme, this adventure sees players through levels 1-15 as they foil an increasingly global plot
  • Storm King’s Thunder: Something is going on with the Giants all across Faerun, and its up to your heroes to uncover what’s going on and stop an ancient evil that threatens the world. For levels 1-10
  • Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen: Set during the famous War of the Lance, this adventure sees your heroes participating in previously-unknown events parallel to the famous adventuring band from the books. This is both an adventure as well as a campaign setting all wrapped up into one neat package
  • Lost Mines of Phandelver: A beginning adventure for low-level characters, available for free online
  • Tales From the Yawning Portal: This is an adventure anthology that takes players all across Faerun to some of its most famous, and infamous, locales. From the Dreadvault to the infamous Tomb of Horrors, there are plenty of adventure options in this book
  • Tomb of Annihilation: Speaking of the Tomb of Horrors, this module sees players delving into dinosaur and undead-infested jungles in order to cure a dastardly curse. It’s a grueling but enjoyable module that takes characters from levels 1-12
  • Tyranny of Dragons: Defy the evil goddess Tiamat as she tries to emerge into the material world. This adventure takes players through levels 1-15
  • The Wild Beyond The Witchlight: After visiting a strange circus, your adventurers are whisked away into the Feywild for a wacky and whimsical adventure. This is for levels 1-8
  • Waterdeep: Dragon Heist: Enjoy a swashbuckling adventure and a stylized heist in the city of Waterdeep as you chase after a long-lost treasure somewhere beneath the city. This covers levels 1-5
  • Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage: Explore Undermountain, one of the Forgotten Realms’ most famous dungeons. With over 20 levels to explore, this megadungeon is the single-largest dungeon in the history of official Dungeons and Dragons modules. This is for levels 5-20

Dungeons & Dragons: 8 Modules From Older Editions Worth Running In 5e

There's no shortage of great Dungeons & Dragons modules, and these are a few from older editions of the game worth trying in 5e.

  • Older D&D modules offer unique adventures for typical 5e adventurers, many being rich in lore and good times.
  • Modules like Inferno and The Dancing Hut of Baba Yaga provide high-level challenges with extraplanar twists.
  • Shadows of the Last War is another module that offers a straightforward adventure set in Eberron with a focus on exploration.

For almost fifty years, Dungeons & Dragons has delighted gamers with a treasure trove of modules. There's no shortage of dungeons to delve and dragons to slay, whether you're homebrewing your own adventure, checking out your local gaming store, or picking up an adventure module on platforms like DriveThruRPG.

Dungeons & Dragons: How To Run Multiple Parties In One Campaign World

While Fifth Edition currently has plenty of pre-written modules , there's also plenty of content from older editions if you're looking for something different. Some older modules have been converted to the latest edition, but the ones on this list have yet to see an official remaster.

8 Castle Amber

  • Edition: First Edition
  • Ideal Levels: 3 through 6

Castle Amber is an old-fashioned dungeon crawl that's great to use whenever you need a side quest with a dimension-hopping twist. While the original module was intended for the Mystara campaign setting, it's not too difficult to adjust details in the lore to make it work for any campaign.

The plot of Castle Amber starts with the players exploring a haunted castle, but things quickly take a turn when the castle contains a portal to medieval France. Spellcasters in your party will also be thrown for a loop as they're forced to contend with the very real risk of being executed for witchcraft in the real-world Middle Ages.

7 Vault Of The Drow

  • Ideal Levels: 10

Vault of the Drow is an open-ended adventure module that allows your players to explore the vast Underdark city of Erelhei-Cinlu. By far the module's greatest strength is its narration and world-building, both of which bring the Underdark to life in glorious detail.

Erelhei-Cinlu is a city in the Greyhawk setting, but if you're running this module in Forgotten Realms, you can move the location to Menzoberranzan without needing to change anything important.

While Vault of the Drow was originally created for the Greyhawk campaign setting, it's equally usable for the Forgotten Realms. You can use it as a one-shot, but it really shines when worked into the Out of the Abyss module for Fifth Edition, where you can flesh out the Underdark setting.

6 Savage Tide

  • Edition: 3.5 Edition
  • Ideal Levels: 1 through 20

If you're a fan of Pirates of the Caribbean but just wish it had more dinosaurs, this is the module for you. Savage Tide starts off as a swashbuckling adventure, but quickly takes a turn towards plane-shifting shenanigans near the very end. It also includes an abbreviated version of The Isle of Dread, just for extra measure.

Dungeons & Dragons: How To DM An Evil Campaign

There are a few Fifth Edition resources you could use to make the conversion process easier. The campaign's main villain, the demon lord Demogorgon, has had his official stat block published in a number of different books. Ghosts of Saltmarsh also has an appendix full of naval combat rules and stats for ships.

  • Ideal Levels: 10 through 14

Inferno is an adventure for high-level PCs that lets you put your players through a hell of a time. While the original module bases itself heavily around Dante's Divine Comedy, you can certainly update the module by making certain details more aligned with traditional D&D lore.

It shouldn't be too hard to convert this module to Fifth Edition, as extraplanar adventures are already appropriate for characters of the original module's level. Since Descent Into Avernus ends at level ten, you can even use Inferno as a continuation or epilogue to an existing Avernus campaign.

4 The Dancing Hut Of Baba Yaga

  • Edition: Second Edition
  • Ideal Levels: 7 through 20

The Dancing Hut of Baba Yaga is a funhouse-style dungeon crawl that stands out for how weird it is. One room of the chicken-legged hut will have your players thrown into their own digestive systems, like a twisted episode of The Magic School Bus. Another will have them thrown into the reverse isekai that is Alternate Reality Tokyo.

This module is suitable for a Feywild campaign , especially if you want to go with the lore of the Baba Yaga being Iggwilv's adoptive mother. Otherwise, you could throw it into any campaign setting with a strong fairy tale or folkloric vibe.

3 Shadows Of The Last War

  • Ideal Levels: 2

Eberron hasn't gotten as much love as other settings in Fifth Edition, but it's still a cult favorite. If you love the setting and want a good low-level adventure to get your players accustomed to the world and lore, look no further than Shadows of the Last War.

Dungeons & Dragons: 16 Free Map Making Resources

This is a fairly straightforward adventure with two dungeon crawls, as well as some overland exploration for your group. You'll need to provide side quests on your own, but for a band of rookie adventurers, Shadows of the Last War is more than enough of a challenge.

2 The Isle Of Dread

  • Ideal Levels: 3 through 7

In a world filled with endless dungeon crawls, The Isle of Dread was one of the first wilderness exploration modules to break the mold. This survival-focused adventure will have your players fighting their way through loads of dinosaurs and facing the elements on a tropical island.

This is a great module to throw in if your players just need a fun side quest with some dinosaurs, so feel free to play around a bit with the set dressing. It's also perfect as a side quest for Tomb of Annihilation, where the tropical setting of Chult is already suited for dinosaur adventures.

1 Age Of Worms

A handful of different adventure paths were published in Dungeon magazine, but Age of Worms stands as a cut above the rest. It's an epic adventure that starts your group off by dealing with a necromancer in a small rural village and ends with them taking down an insidious Far Realm cult.

If you have either Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes or Monsters of the Multiverse, the Star Spawn stats will prove invaluable to your conversion efforts. It's advisable to take your time and convert as you go, since Age of Worms has a lot of content to digest.

When To Say No To Players As The DM In DnD 5e

Quick links, trying to derail, anytime they're breaking a table rule, when you're speaking for the group, making someone uncomfortable, when they take "the rule of cool" too far, during session zero, when something doesn’t fit a theme.

Being a Dungeon Master in Dungeons & Dragons can be a lot of work. You have encounters to prepare, characters to memorize, and more often than not, an entire world to flesh out. While you want everyone to have fun, sometimes you'll need to set a boundary.

Best Source Books For D&D In 2024

When moments like that arise, a solid "no" usually does the job quite well, and your players will often respect you for it. These moments can vary anywhere from one player being rude to another to trying to derail the campaign entirely. Either way, these are some moments where it's okay to tell your players no.

Being a DM means a lot of preparation. You've either poured over a pre-made adventure or taken the time to homebrew an adventure or campaign on your own. Either way, you'll want to keep things moving forward without railroading your players completely (within reason, obviously).

That means if you have a player who has a penchant for wanting to go off and do their own thing, then it's fine to say no. That being said, every once in a while is fine, especially during downtime in adventures like long rests or exploring. But, after a while, the rest of your players may try to keep things moving on their own.

With any of these moments, it always helps to state your reasoning when you say no to something. That way, your players can see your reasoning, and they don't feel like you're working against them.

Whether it's a rule that the creators at Wizards Of The Coast set up that you're using or a table rule that you've created yourself, a DM is often expected to keep the game flowing by saying "no" when the rules are being broken.

Sooner or later, one of your characters will have the age-old question of "can I do...", and while it never hurts to hear them out, it's also completely fine to say no in most cases. It's the role of the DM to interpret and withhold the rules for the table's best interest.

The role of the DM is to more or less keep everything going smoothly, and sometimes, that is easier said than done. Still yet, it does help to know when the group is ready to move on or doesn't agree with a certain person's actions.

This can mean everything from session scheduling, to splitting the party, to attacking a non-hostile NPC. If someone is doing something that you feel the group as a whole doesn't appreciate, it's within your rights to speak up.

Being friendly with one another at the table or at a virtual table means respecting one another and the boundaries you have collectively created. While a good group of players will be able to sense when something is going too far, it is usually the GMs role to be the first person to say no when someone is uncomfortable.

5 Video Game Characters That Would Make Great D&D Bosses

A joke gone too far, a part of the game that might be triggering, or just something plain rude; it’s completely fair as a DM to put a stop to something when one or more of the players stop having a good time with it.

The Rule Of Cool is a commonly used and well-loved blanket rule that many DMs have grown fond of in D&D. The basics are: if a player asks if they can do something, and it would be cool to see, then say yes.

But, like with every rule, it needs limits. Jumping on a dragon for the final blow? Sure, that's pretty cool. Jumping down a dragon's gullet for the final blow? Maybe a little less doable. But that's for you to decide. Just know that it's perfectly fine to say no when the Rule Of Cool goes too far.

Session zero sets the tone for the entire adventure. Whether it’s multiple arcs and years of playing or just a couple of days, your players will remember what flies and what doesn’t from session zero onwards.

Which makes it the perfect time to start saying no to things. This goes especially for rules in the game and basic table etiquette. Play it as firm or as loose as you want, but waffling on things later on is usually more difficult than just a flat-out "no" at session zero.

It helps in session zero to ask your players what they're looking for in the game, too, or if there are any rules they'd prefer to have or not have in the game, too. A lot of DM-ing is a conversation.

Finding a tone for your campaign is something that takes some time and careful consideration to do, so it can definitely be frustrating for everyone at the table if someone begins to undermine that.

Your players have probably all signed up to play whatever campaign you’ve explained to them, which makes it all the more frustrating when one person may want to play a more grimdark campaign when you have a more lighthearted one going on.

That’s a good time to say no. Sure, a little humor in a horror campaign , or a good scare or serious moment in a humor campaign, is fine. But anyone who constantly tries to derail the tone should be asked politely to stop.
