Become an Election Officer

You can cash in on our right to vote on Election Day. Many localities need election officers, especially those who are bilingual. And while the hours may be long, the pay isn’t bad for a day’s work – although note that the day can be far longer than eight hours, frequently running from before polls open until after they close.

For example, in Fairfax County, Va. , which needs thousands of poll workers, election officers are paid $175 for a full day (step up your game and get paid $225 as an assistant chief election officer and $250 as a chief election officer). In Monterey County, Calif. , election officers are paid $135 (for clerks) and $185 (for inspectors).

Generally, to qualify, you must be at least 18 years of age and a registered voter in the state, be a U.S. citizen, read and write English, and have transportation to the polling place. You’ll likely also have to devote time to attend a training class. Here’s a video about becoming an election officer .

Pro tip: Bring plenty to eat and drink. It’s a very long day, and you cannot leave the polling place to grab a bite.

Coach a youth sports team.

As youth team sports return to the playing field, consider coaching. This gig could require some creative workarounds with a full-time job if you’re returning to the office – but that’s the deal with most moonlighting work. In the case of coaching youth teams, it often means late-afternoon, evening and weekend availability , plus knowledge of the intricacies of a sport – soccer, hockey, softball, you name it – and the patience and talent to teach it to others (as well as manage the expectations of parents).

Many recreational youth sports clubs, especially travel teams, around the country pay their coaching staffs. The pay scale for youth soccer coaches on elite club teams, for example, tops out at around $2,000 per month at the highest level ($200-$400 per month at the lowest level, $500 to $2,000 per month for premier coaches), according to Job Monkey , a job-search website. But note: You must be certified at various levels to earn that kind of money and have safety certifications, which may or may not be paid by the organization.

Some high schools around the country also rely on outside individuals to coach teams if teachers aren’t interested in taking those positions. (I coached high-school soccer and a club youth soccer team for a few years while also working my full-time job as a journalist.) Pay varies. I received $2,500 per season for coaching high-school soccer. Of course, from pre-season to post-season and all the daily practices and games in between, that’s not a lot of money – but it helped, and it was a lot of fun.

If you’re a professional, colleges and universities are always on the lookout for adjunct professors or lecturers. Some may require a master’s degree; others just a college degree and professional experience to share with students . I taught visual and print journalism at two esteemed J-schools – one required a master’s degree, which I have – for 10 years while holding down a full-time job. The side hustles added several thousand dollars to my annual household income, and, more, it was fulfilling to work with students eager to learn. How do you get an adjunct teaching job? Reach out to community colleges, colleges or universities where you live. Depending on your specialty – say, accounting – contact the department head in that particular school and inquire about becoming an adjunct.

How about substitute teaching? The pandemic accelerated teacher retirements, and some schools are in desperate need of teachers. Grade schools and high schools nationwide are looking for people to substitute teach. Some districts hire directly (during a recent federal government shutdown, the Fairfax County Public School system in northern Virginia outside of Washington, D.C., actively encouraged furloughed government workers to substitute teach and held a series of workshops seeking substitute teachers). Some districts have outsourced the hiring process. ESS , a Knoxville, Tenn.-based K-12 educational staffing firm, works with more than 750 school systems in 28 states to fill substitute teacher and other staffing positions with its base of more than 60,000 substitutes and permanent employees.

The company says it fills many nonteaching roles that don’t require certification. These are filled by people who are maybe getting their feet wet, seeing if they want to pursue a teaching career. It varies by state and school district, but some don’t require substitutes to have teaching certification. Pennsylvania, for example, allows people with a bachelor’s degree to apply for a one-year emergency certification to substitute. Check the websites of school districts in your area to see if they are hiring substitutes. Many also offer training to teach remotely during the pandemic.

Pay varies by district. The Fairfax County Public School system was recently paying substitute teachers up to $35 per hour.

Here’s a state-by-state guide to requirements, and in some cases, pay and benefits, for substitute teachers, courtesy of the National Education Association.

Be a Tour Guide

Many guided tours had been put on hold during the pandemic, but they’re starting to reopen with many national parks overwhelmed by pandemic-weary tourists. And you could cash in.

If you live near an historic site overseen by the National Park Service, you could become a licensed guide with the Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides. For example, the Licensed Battlefield Guides of Gettysburg , the Pennsylvania site of one of the most epic battles of the American Civil War, are the only individuals allowed by the National Park Service to conduct visitors around the national park for a fee. Rates for a two-hour basic battlefield tour range from $63 to $132 depending on group size, with prorated fees of $31.50 to $66 per hour for additional time. Tips are not required but often given.

Are you a runner? Consider earning extra bucks as a running tour guide. City Running Tours – “sweat and sightsee simultaneously” – is one company offering “sightrunning” (it’s a thing) services in 10 (and counting) U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C., and Honolulu. The company offers personalized or group tours. Tips aren’t required, but permitted. You’ll need to be able to talk and run unimpaired.

"Our tour guides make on average about $20-$40 per tour plus incentives based on seniority, type of tour, distance, number of participants, referrals and positive reviews," Michael Gazaleh, president and CEO of City Running Tours, tells us.

Sell Unwanted Electronics

Dormant smart phones, tablets, computers or game consoles often find their way to a desk drawer or the back of a closet. You can easily cash in on your unwanted electronics – even damaged items – by selling them online.

Sell at one of ecoATM’s thousands of kiosks and get instant cash. Use the site to find one near you. They’re located in Walmart stores, Kroger supermarkets, malls and other locations (I found two in the small Virginia city where I live). At uSell , you can sell smart phones, tablets, game consoles, and more. You get paid by check or through PayPal. Shipping with all of these sites is free. Or bring your video games, game consoles, smart phones and tablets, and accessories to GameStop ( It’s not just a meme stock! ) to earn cash or store credit without the shipping hassles.

Search for Unclaimed Property

There are billions of dollars’ worth of unclaimed property in federal and state coffers. Some of it could be yours, but it’s up to you to track down the cash.

The feds hang on to tax refunds that are returned to the IRS because of mailing-address errors or that are never claimed by taxpayers because they didn’t file returns. The government also holds on to forgotten savings bonds, government-guaranteed mortgage-insurance refunds and government pensions that were never claimed. There’s no central database, so you’ll have to check with individual federal agencies about missing funds.

State governments hold onto uncashed dividend checks, returned utility deposits, unclaimed state-tax refunds, uncollected insurance benefits, and stock dividends, among other things. (If a bank or other payer doesn’t have your last known address on file, it will turn over your money to the state in which the institution is incorporated.) You can search for unclaimed property held by states at Unclaimed.org and Missingmoney.com . The New York Sstate Ccomptroller’s office, for example, reports it returns $1.5 billion yearly in unclaimed funds to people who file a claim.

Yes, I did this, in 2017. And yes, I found some unclaimed funds, in the coffers of New York state, where I once lived. I followed the procedure and sent a notarized letter to New York and heard back. I received three checks totaling $134. Alas, nothing turned up there for me in 2022.

22 IRS Audit Red Flags

If you have a special skill – whether it’s the ability to play an instrument well, paint like Picasso or explain calculus in a way anyone (even I) can understand – you may be able to make money sharing it with others. For example, you could earn $10 to $75 an hour tutoring individual kids or college students if you speak a second language or have great math, science or writing skills.

Advertise your services on school, campus and community bulletin boards, or tutoring web sites such as Wyzant (where you choose your own hourly rate) and The Princeton Review’s Tutor.com . And take advantage of social media sites, such as Facebook, to let people know about the lessons you’re able to teach.

Model for Artists

Modeling is another great way to earn money. If you’re comfortable posing nude in front of artists and are capable of holding poses for as long as 30 minutes, consider life modeling. Artists want to draw bodies of all shapes and sizes in order to hone their skills. Typical sessions last three hours, and pay is about $18 to $25 per hour, according to job listings on Jobmonkey.com. During sessions, models start with short one-minute gesture poses, then transition to longer poses lasting from five to 30 minutes. If you’re interested in becoming a life model, contact art schools at local colleges, art organizations and community centers. Local arts publications may also have ads seeking models (all which you should vet). For example, a Charlottesville, Va., weekly recently had an ad for an artist seeking models and paying $150 per session.

If you’re uncomfortable with the full monty, there are other options. How about modeling just part of your bod? Fashion magazines, TV shows, commercials and movies are always in need of attractive hands, feet, legs, even beards, unique ears and that perfectly shaped bald pate. In-demand body-part models earn anywhere from $1,000 a day for TV work and $2,000-$5,000 for print work, according to Forbes. Contact local and national modeling agencies, including Los Angeles-based BodyPartsModels.com .

Get Paid for Your Opinions

Market-research firms are hired by big businesses to get inside the heads of consumers. Participation in an in-person focus group led by a moderator, such as those run by market research firm Focus Group by Schlesinger , can earn you rewards points or Visa debit cards. Focus Pointe also has opportunities for telephone, app, web chats, video diaries or online surveys as well as clinical trials. The company also has 16 U.S. locations for in-person surveys.

In exchange for taking online and phone surveys, firms such as Harris Poll Online offer rewards points redeemable for gift cards and merchandise from the likes of Visa (debit cards), Amazon.com, Starbucks and iTunes. Beware scams, though. Legitimate firms won’t charge a fee or ask you to cash a check and wire back part of the money .

Lawyers are getting in on the act, too. “Online jurors” can earn cash for giving their opinions on legal cases. EJury.com pays $5 to $10 per case. You’ll need a PayPal account. At ] OnlineVerdict.com , where fees for “jurors” range from $20 to $60 (the case reviews take from 20 minutes to 60 minutes to complete), payment is made by check.

Sell Gold and Silver for Scrap

If you have gold jewelry that isn’t valuable as an antique or a designer piece, consider selling it for scrap. Keep in mind that most gold jewelry isn’t pure , say 14-karat or 18-karat, so you’ll need to calculate the melt value to get a better sense of its worth as scrap. The melt value reflects the actual amount of gold in the jewelry; a dealer will offer you a percentage of that value. Quotes will vary widely, so get several.

The same goes for silver. Maybe you inherited a few sterling trays you never use. Assuming the trays hold no particular value to collectors, sell them for scrap rather than trying to sell them at a consignment store or online. Check with several metals dealers, both online and at storefront locations, to get quotes. Expect to receive about 85% to 90% of your silver’s melt value.

Sell Gently Worn Clothing

If you or your family members have brand-name clothing, accessories or shoes that are in good condition but no longer being used, turn them into quick cash by selling them on consignment. Research the consignment shops in your area to find the right match for the types and styles of clothing you have to sell. Most consignment stores will price items at one-third of their retail value, and you’ll likely get 50% of the price at which your items eventually sell.

You might be able to get more for your used clothes by selling them online. For example, you can earn up to 80% of the resale value of women’s and kids’ clothing, shoes and handbags at fashion resale site ThredUp.com , an online thrift and consignment shop. Shipping to ThredUp.com is free, and you can get cash or store credit, but note ThredUp can pull a commission of 20% to 90% of the value of your item. If you have high-end men’s and women’s clothing, jewelry, watches and accessories, try your luck with luxury consignment site The RealReal . You earn up to 85% of the resale value in cash (but it will more likely be 40%-50%; higher-ticket items get the higher returns). Another option for designer clothing and accessories: Tradesy , which pays a 19.8% commission of the resale value of items $50 or more. You receive earnings via PayPal, debit card or a bank account. (Note: Several of these sites require that you register before you can enter and explore.)

A newer player in this space, Poshmark , takes it all – clothing for women, men and children, plus handbags, shoes, jewelry and makeup. All items you sell that are under $15, Poshmark takes a $2.95 flat commission. On sales over $15, you keep 80% of the sale, and Poshmark keeps 20%.

Or skip the commission bite and sell your used clothing on eBay, which will require more effort on your part but could result in a bigger return.

13 Reasons to Shop at Walmart (Even If You Hate Walmart)

Care for Children

Child care can be an enjoyable way to put money in your pocket if you like kids . If you advertise your availability via online services, note that hourly rates vary by city (and demands of services, including some requiring caregivers be fully vaccinated). In smaller towns and cities, such as Palatine, Ill., and Schaumburg, Ill., the going rate is $10 to $15 an hour (in the small Virginia city where I live, child care providers are fetching between $10 to $20 an hour). In big cities such as New York and Washington, expect to earn $20 to $45 an hour as a child care provider or nanny, as babysitting rates skyrocketed by 11% in 2021, according to UrbanSitter , a child care job and search site. Advertise your services on community bulletin boards, localized web pages, the public library or houses of worship. You can also place a listing or search for jobs on sites including UrbanSitter, Care.com and Sittercity . Average hourly rate for babysitters in the U.S. edged over $20 an hour in 2021; in San Antonio, child care seekers were willing to pay up to $14 an hour.

Sell Excess Furniture

If you have an attic, garage or storage unit filled with furniture you’re not using, unload those items for cash by selling them on Craigslist . (You might even end up saving the monthly cost of your storage unit.) You can list large items (free) on your local Craigslist classifieds, and buyers will come to you — if you’re comfortable with that (some people I know who sell on Craigslist meet the buyers at a neutral, very public location, including police stations, just to play it safe). Just be sure to insist on cash. Take good photos, share key details and provide a concise description of what you’re selling.

If you don’t want the hassle of selling items yourself, take furniture and home accessories you no longer want to an upscale consignment store that gets a lot of traffic so that you can get top dollar for your items . Expect to split the profit 50/50 with the store.

For online furniture consignment, try sites such as Chairish , which lets you sell your used or vintage furniture and home decor and earn up to 70% of the resale value (on listings of 10 or fewer items), or AptDeco , which helps you sell used home furnishings. AptDeco retains 29% of the sale price . Listings for both sites are free.

Sell Collectibles Online

Perhaps you collected stamps (or baseball cards, coins or Beanie Babies) when you were young, and now they’re just collecting dust. They could be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. One place to get top dollar for your collectibles and small items of value is eBay. Click on the “register” link in the top left corner of the homepage to create an account. Then visit the site’s “Seller Center” to learn how to sell. (Or check out our slide show with 9 Secrets to Making More Money on Your eBay Auction .) You can list 50 items every month for free, and you’ll pay a 10% fee (lower in some cases) on each item when it sells. Research prices for merchandise similar to what you plan to sell, so that you can price your wares competitively. For more tips on how and where to sell valuable items, see 6 Things You Should Know About Collectibles .

Redeem Rewards Points

You could be sitting on an untapped source of cash if you haven’t bothered to redeem your credit card rewards points lately. One-third of all rewards – everything from airline miles to cash back – worth a total of $16 billion go unredeemed each year, according to a study by marketing research firm Colloquy. Per household, that averages out to $205 worth of rewards a year that aren’t redeemed.

The next-best thing to getting cash for points is a general-purpose gift card, something I stumbled on recently as I was looking at my NASA Federal Credit Union credit card statement online. I’d actually racked up enough rewards points to land a $50 Costco gift card. At American Express, for example, 10,000 Membership Rewards on a Blue from American Express card points earn $70 retailer-specific – Amazon and Best Buy, for example – gift cards from AmEx.

Sell Used Books

Stop letting your used books collect dust on a book shelf, and start selling them online. BookScouter.com makes it easy for you to get the best price for your books. Simply type in the ISBN (it’s the number above the bar code; you can track it down online if a hardback’s dust jacket is gone) and BookScouter.com scans prices from more than 30 book-buying sites to show you which ones are offering the most. For example, the highest price offered recently for a copy of John Grisham’s The Judge’s List (bought new for about $30.82 at Amazon), was $7.15 (with no restrictions) from Piggybook.com

BookScouter.com is also a good place to find out who’s doling out the best prices for used college textbooks. But keep your expectations low, especially if you have an older edition. For example, we plugged in the ISBN for the textbook International Environmental Law and Policy ($54 new at Amazon) and found sellbackyyourbook.com would buy it for, uh, 69 cents. Kinda the same experience we had at college bookstores back in the day.

Walk or Pet-Sit Dogs

Why not get a little exercise while you earn anywhere from $10 to $30 for about an hour’s work? Working folks will pay plenty for you to take their pandemic puppies on a daily stroll when they’re back in the office. Or consider pet-sitting for people while they’re on vacation, for a daily fee of $50 or more. Advertise your services in veterinarians’ offices, on Craigslist or on sites such as Care.com .

You can also team up with an existing dog-walking operation that handles client recruitment and scheduling. To find one, ask other dog walkers you encounter whether they’re part of a group or check Craigslist.

Marking similar territory is Rover.com , a website for those of you looking to be pet caregivers (and, as well, a site for pet owners to find you). Rover offers dog boarding services, pet- and/or house-sitting services, doggy day care and even drop-in services where caregivers stop by your crib for quick potty services (for the dog) and a mini-playdate. Rover has some stringent guidelines for the folks it hires (only taking on less than 20 percent of potential sitters, the company says). The Seattle, Wash.-based firm has services in more than 24,000 communities in North America. Rover says sitters it backs via its website can earn up to $1,000 a month (sitters set their own rates; Rover takes a 20% bite per booking).

Get Freelance Work

Plenty of media, corporate and nonprofit websites are looking for freelancers to write, edit or design content for an average of $30 to $70 per hour, according to the web site Freelancewriting.com. Freelancewriting.com and Freelance Writing Jobs provide a long list of freelance writing opportunities culled from several top sites, along with advice and tips for freelance writers. Freelancer.com offers a wide variety of freelancing jobs in categories such as design, media and architecture or writing and content. For $14.99 a month, you can join Mediabistro’s MB Unlimited to post your qualifications and get support for your endeavors.

If you fancy yourself a skilled photographer, you can also earn extra cash by selling photos to stock art sites such as Getty Images/iStock and Shutterstock . At both sites, you must apply to be a contributor by submitting samples of your photos, illustrations, videos or audio. If approved, you’ll earn royalties when your files are downloaded by paying clients. Getty Images royalty rates are 20% for still images and 25% for video clips. iStock royalty rates start at 15% for photos and 20% for videos and illustrations (if you sign as an exclusive contributor to iStock, you can earn between 25% and $45%). Shutterstock’s royalty payouts are between 15% and 40%.

Sell Your Creations

If you have a knack for creating anything from baked goods to intricate art designs, you can profit from your talent.

It happened to Stacy Brown, founder of the Auburn, Ala.-based Chicken Salad Chick restaurant chain. Brown’s personal quest to create the perfect chicken salad morphed into a small side business where she was selling her creation from her house – until the health department informed her she couldn’t sell food from her home kitchen. Voila. A restaurant was born from whence a chain sprung (sprung chicken?). For more about Brown’s story, see Small-Business Success Story: Chicken Salad Chick Shares a Taste of the South .

Say you’re an excellent baker (according to all your friends). You can find clients for your baked goods by volunteering to provide treats for your children’s school functions or for church or other religious gatherings, or by selling them at a farmer’s market, flea market or local festivals. A brand, logo and stickers are probably the first investment you’ll want to make after ingredients.

If art and design are more your speed, consider selling your creations online (or at local craft shows, when they return post-pandemic). Online sites include Etsy , DeviantArt or Zazzle . Etsy and Zazzle feature products such as jewelry, quote posters, vintage clothing and even pet supplies. DeviantArt mainly sells art prints.

Participate in Clinical Trials

If you’re willing to be a human guinea pig, you can pad your pockets by participating in clinical research trials. Compensation depends on the nature of the trial and the amount of time involved, but payment can range from a few hundred dollars to $4,000 per study .

Legitimate studies are sponsored by medical institutions and pharmaceutical companies. You’ll be required to undergo a health screening to determine if you’re eligible to participate. Come-ons for clinical trials litter the Internet. Many are scams. The safe play is to peruse studies that are actively recruiting participants at ClinicalTrials.gov , a database run by the National Institutes of Health. Search by location to identify local trials.

Cash in on Unused Gift Cards

The amount of sold-but-unredeemed – or “closed loop,” to use retail industry parlance – gift cards in the U.S. each year totals $1 billion, according to CEB Global. So grab the unwanted cards you have lying around your house, open the loop and turn them into cash by selling them online at sites such as Gift Card Granny . You won’t get the full value of your card (up to 92% at best). But if you have no intention of using the card, or had forgotten about it, it’s like getting free money.

Amend Your Tax Return

Consider amending recent years’ tax returns to claim missed deductions. For example, you can qualify for a tax credit worth between 20% and 35% for what you pay for childcare while working (20% to 50% for 2021). See 20 Most-Overlooked Tax Deductions, Credits and Exemptions for more breaks that might be worth amending your return to claim in hindsight.

You generally have three years from the date you filed your original return or two years from the date you paid any tax due, whichever is later, to file an amended return if you missed a tax break or need to make other changes. For example, the deadline for amending a 2018 return generally expires April 18, 2022.

Rent Out Your Home

Get cash in hand on the first of every month recruiting a roommate to share living costs and/or rent.

Not interested in a long-term houseguest? Websites including Airbnb make it easy to rent out a spare room, a wing of your house or a backyard cottage.

Beth Everett and her husband, Glenn, built a cottage in their backyard in 2014 for their son Jordan to live in when he’s home from college. But while the studio sat empty, visitors to Portland, Ore., began renting the cozy space through Airbnb for $99 a night.

Fox Lair, as it’s known, offers heated floors, a small sitting area decked out with guitars and bongos, and plenty of eclectic artwork. Everett estimated that in 2015 they earned about $9,000 from a steady stream of visitors, money she used to help pay for editing and cover designs for her self-published books, the Lee Harding mystery series. “It was the easiest money I ever made,” she says. “And it was fun.”

You can list your space free on Airbnb , then pay 3% to the site when you receive a successful booking.

Another option: Do you live in a resort town or busy metropolitan area? You can rent out your home on Vrbo (formerly Vacation Rental By Owner). You set your rates and also charge the renters a $50 cleaning fee. Vrbo charges renter-members 5% of the booking fee.

My wife and I rented out a single-family home via Vrbo in Asheville, N.C., in October 2018 to attend a family wedding. We pitched in with other relatives to cover the cost of the week-long stay. An upside (next to the stunning views and low cost): The owners were nearby when we had a slight plumbing problem and promptly responded.

10 Things You’ll Spend More on in Retirement

Join a Direct Sales Team

These days, Avon isn’t the only direct-sales opportunity. You can start a side business selling anything from cookware to clothing to home decor to, yes, Tupperware. Popular possibilities include Mary Kay and the Pampered Chef.

With direct sales, start-up costs are usually low (figure $200 or less), your work schedule is flexible and earnings are commission-based (typically 25% to 30% of sales) . Generally, you can increase your take by recruiting others to the sales team – if that makes you comfortable. When I lived and worked in Michigan, I was constantly hounded by friends and co-workers who were selling Amway, which is based in Grand Rapids. They were making good side money.

10 Things You'll Spend Less on in Retirement

Be a Blogger or YouTube Star

If you like to write, or think it would be fun to share your knowledge about a particular subject, start a blog. WordPress.org and Blogger.com offer free blogging platforms. Want to go bigger? Try GoDaddy.com for domain name registration, as well as website building, hosting and security. Turn to Google for Publishers for a free way to display ads on your site to earn money.

If you have a camera and something unique to share, you can cash in on YouTube. A reasonable goal for amateur filmmakers is to score viral fame with a YouTube channel. That means making a series of videos, each of which can run a little longer than three minutes. Highlight a specific skill or theme – say, cooking, standup comedy, fixing plumbing or repairing older cars. Your videos will drive traffic to one another while you perfect your skill and earn “subscribers.” To generate views, reach out to media outlets and bloggers with a link to your videos.

Drive Other People

If you’ve ever found yourself in need of a quick ride, you may have turned to Uber , the anytime, anywhere ride-hailing service that has gained enormous popularity over the last several years. But have you ever considered becoming an Uber driver? Requirements for being an Uber driver in most cities are: You must be legally able to drive and have at least one year of driving experience (three if you’re under 23), own a car, and pass background and driving checks. If you meet the requirements, you could earn cash by driving people around in your free time .

Uber at one time said drivers’ average earnings per hour are about $19; some observers have estimated it’s far less than that. And don’t forget to factor in the costs associated with using your own car, such as gas, maintenance, insurance and cleaning. Also, your earnings depend upon how much you work and how many rides you give, among other factors.

Uber’s biggest ride-share competitor is Lyft . Like Uber, Lyft has age, vehicle and background-check requirements for drivers.

The 10 Best Cars for Senior Drivers

Rent Out Your Car

We just told you about making extra dough by driving for the ride-hailing services Uber and Lyft. What about simply renting out your car and leaving the driving to Gus? Or any other stranger? It’s possible on Getaround . From the renter’s end, they get a reliable car to rent – fees start at $5 an hour, and they can be rented hourly or daily – with no monthly dues or tons of paperwork. Insurance and 24/7 roadside assistance is included in the rental, which the renter finds, rents and unlocks via an app.

From your end, when you sign on with Getaround – you will be screened – you decide when your vehicle is available for rental, and you unlock your car and rent it out using Getaround’s smart-car technology. Getaround pays for a $1 million insurance policy on your rental, and drivers are screened.

If you buy into this ride-share plan to make money while your car is idle, Getaround says car-owners can make up to $1,000 a month renting out their mostly idle vehicle .

Another big player in this car-sharing biz in 2022 is Turo.com , which you’re free to join to rent out your ride. Or rides. Turo encourages entrepreneurs to build a fleet of their own cars for rental purposes. Turo says your annual income from renting out one car averages $10,516, and goes up to $94,642 for five cars. Liability insurance, marketing, and prescreening of renters is included.

Also sharing (pun intended) this space in 2022 is AvailSharing.com . If you own a 2013 or newer vehicle, consider making some dough off of it by allowing Avail to share it with others. When you come aboard AvailSharing.com, you can drop your car off at Avail locations at airports and other Avail-staffed rental locations. Staffers there handle the rest, from cleaning the interior and exterior of your car to handling the rental operation. Avail, via Allstate, handles rental insurance and roadside assistance, if needed. Avail says you can make from $20 to $25 a day if your car is rented out, and if it isn’t, you still get the free car wash.

For more intensive jobs, try joining TaskRabbit , which is owned by Ikea. If you live in or near one of 62 U.S. regions served by the site in 2022, you can perform tasks such as waiting in line for someone (yes, you can pay someone to do that), running errands, building shelves, doing yard work, assembling Ikea furniture or lifting heavy items. Set your own fees with TaskRabbit, and you keep 100% of what you charge plus tips (for example, a "tasker" in Albany, N.Y., was making $28 per hour for help moving). The company says it has an

Get Paid for Projects You Create as a Teacher

So you teach, maybe full time, maybe part time. You’ve created some dynamic lesson plans and units, task cards, activities, Common Core resources, games, classroom décor and so much more that goes into teaching. How about selling it (or, if you’re looking for a classroom boost, buying classroom material others have created)? Welcome to Teachers Pay Teachers , a website dedicated to the craft. Since its inception in 2006 by a New York City school teacher, TpT says it has paid out more than $330 million to teachers willing to share. Note there are a host of guidelines, topmost which is you cannot sell on TpT material that is copyrighted to someone else. Original material sold on the site includes learning games teaching reading and math skills, writing tools, flash cards, books and more.

California first grade teacher Chery Akaba-McCumber told the Sacramento Bee newspaper she made $1,500 selling an educational game she created and sold on TpT for $2.25 – that’s 1,781 sales. “As you can see, it really adds up, even for such a relatively inexpensive item,” Akaba-McCumber said.

There are two types of memberships: Basic Seller Membership, which is free to join; you’ll retain 55% of your sales. With a Premium Seller Membership, which costs $60 a year, you’ll retain 80% of your sales.

Become a Taste Tester

In the old comic strip Li’l Abner , the title character had the dream job of testing mattresses for the Stunned Ox mattress company by actually sleeping on them. How about you and I become taste-testers for giant food manufacturers such as Perdue or a market-research firm hired by the food and beverage industry to gauge consumer tastes, get free food and other perks?

Delmarva Sensory in Salisbury, Md., is one such company that hires taste-testers for Perdue, which has a major presence in Maryland. Delmarva requires potential testers to fill out an online application. If you’re accepted, there are four forms of testing: (1) Visiting a central location and tasting food and providing your feedback; (2) working in focus groups with a moderator; (3) testing products at home (and they give you enough for two people, I’m told); and (4) web surveys.

Testers evaluate everything from taste and packaging to how the product was prepared . You may even be testing product concepts still in development.

Once accepted by Delmarva Sensory, you log in to your account to choose dates and time slots for tests that you qualify for. Compensation is in the form of $20 e-giftcards (a more complex test can mean more compensation) or manufacturer coupons. The company also seeks children, dogs and cats (but no guinea pigs) for taste-testing.

Spice manufacturer McCormick Corp. also hires taste-testers for events in Hunt Valley, Md., near its corporate headquarters. McCormick is a little more stringent on frequency: Tastings of food, beverages, and snacks are done weekdays during day and evening hours, and participants can attend and evaluate up to four times a year. You must register at McCormick. Compensation depends upon the size and duration of the test, McCormick notes.

Market-research firm Focus & Testing of Los Angeles chooses taste-testers from its database for events in L.A., Columbus, Ohio, and other markets. Compensation ranges from $40 for a 20-minute test or as much as $100 for longer research projects.

Wrap Advertising on Your Ride

Why the blank look on your car? It could be advertising stuff, other than the make and model and dealer of your ride. We’re talking legit ads you have applied to your vehicle that get you paid. Hit up Carvertise , a Wilmington, Del.-based company that finds the advertisers and puts you in the driver’s seat, your car wrapped in ads unique to the market where you roam the streets.

Carvertise says drivers who have their cars wrapped (and unwrapped) by Carvertose experts can earn $350 to $1,500 per advertising campaign.

Another player in this space is Stickr , which pays you to wrap advertising made of high-end perforated vinyl material on your vehicle much as city buses do. Stickr will charge you an upfront fee of $10, but you get that back when you prove you have the sticker on your ride.

Stickr claims drivers can earn cash plus $50-$175 in local restaurant gift cards monthly.

A couple of notes before you wrap your ride in advertisements: If you live in a community governed by a homeowners association, make sure there aren’t rules about parking vehicles with advertising on them in your ’hood. Yes, such restrictions exist.

And beware of scams, Carvertise cautions. Some companies pitching putting ads on your car will ask you, the driver, for money or to write a check to someone. Those companies aren’t legit, Carvertise says.

Sponsor a Spot for Pet Relief

Who’s a good boy? You are, when you turn your extra space into a dog park. Sniffspot , “the Airbnb for dog off-leash areas,” gives pet owners a place to let their charges run free. Essentially, you’re creating a dog park on your property — and earning yourself some walking-around money in the process (Sniffspot says some of its hosts make as much as $1,500 per month).

Sniffspot’s stringent procedures and safeguards include verification of pet vaccinations and flea prevention, screenings for aggressive dogs (they’ll be banned) and insurance against damage to your property (Sniffspot says it’s never had a claim filed).

All types of properties are welcome to be listed. Property owners set their own per-hour per-dog rate. Sniffspot collects the funds and keeps 12%, plus a 10% marketing surcharge for hosts who joined the site after July 26, 2018.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, pet owners are responsible for cleaning up dog waste.

Coach Voice

Who knows, with your talent for teaching, your student may end up on “The Voice” – thanking you .

Seriously, if you have a vocal talent (more than serenading yourself in the shower), and the creativity and gumption to teach it to others, you can turn it into some Dough-Re-Me via a highly flexible side hustle .

Many voice coaches typically have a college degree in music, but it’s not a requirement. What is required is for you to find a place to teach and a way to scour for aspiring talent – your students. For solid cred on your voice-coach resume, you could become a licensed Institute for Vocal Advancement teacher (and post your skills on the IVA website to find students).

A key is finding a place to teach. Some possibilities: rent private studio space, or rent space at colleges (schools that specialize in music are best), high schools or homes. The better bet: A music studio built to teach voice that comes equipped with musical instruments, microphones, and the ability to record sessions.

Voice coaches charge upward of $30 an hour, according to Jobmonkey.com . And if you don’t want to freelance, see if schools or private music studios will onboard you. Full-time vocal coaches make approximately $46,000 a year.

Drive a School Bus

As schools crawled back to reopening during the pandemic, other serious issues popped up, including a critical shortage of school bus drivers. If you’re retired, have some early morning and late afternoon time on your hands, you could make some cash driving a school bus.

You may even have the opportunity to make a little more money at it if you sign on to drive school sports teams to and from events in the evening or weekends.

For most school districts, you must have a commercial driver’s license, a clean driving record and a clean criminal record. It will go better if you like to drive, you’re friendly and can handle the occasional Otto Mann joke.

It’s not big money. Most drivers are paid between $11 and $16 per hour , according to Jobmonkey.com. That number was pre-pandemic; look for sign-on bonuses and more during the driver shortage.

Plan on working 20 hours or so a week, often starting in the early morning before getting back behind the wheel in mid-afternoon for a couple hours. You’ll have an established route. And depending on where you live, you could be working for a school district or a private bus company hired by the school district, or potentially directly for a private school.

15 Reasons You'll Go Broke in Retirement

Grocery Shop for Others

The lockdown accelerated the trend of grocery shoppers farming out their weekly grocery shopping. There are plenty of paid shoppers filling local supermarket aisles, either from outside services or store personnel. So how about going grocery shopping and making money instead of spending money? You can do it as an Instacart shopper . You know the drill, because you likely have run into armies of Instacart shoppers while shopping for your own groceries: Instacart employees are shopping for, and delivering to, folks shopping from home or work.

You have two options when you wear the Instacart green: Just do the shopping as an in-store shopper and have someone else deliver. Or do the shopping and the delivering as a full-service shopper. As a full-service shopper, you’re an independent contractor who must have access to a car. You choose your own hours and will shop and deliver orders. Instacart does not post salary levels, but Indeed.com says personal shoppers make around $17 per hour .

Rent Out Your RV

Maybe you needed (or thought you needed) to buy an RV during the pandemic if, say, you were a healthcare worker who needed to isolate from the rest of the family. Or maybe you bought one to vacation with the family at a safe distance from others. Either way, you could rent out your RV to others for a little side cash.

If you’re uncomfortable putting that expensive ride in the hands of Craigslist, you could put the task of renting out your rolling home in the hands of professionals. One site is RVezy , which dubs itself "the Airbnb for RVs," meaning it rents out your RVs from people like you around the country. It features towables, motorhomes, pet-friendly RVs, deliverable RVs and stationary RVs. RVesy claims RV owners can make an average of $1,400 a week renting out their RVs. RVezy covers the insurance and roadside assistance for the renter who has her rig. Similar to Airbnb, you get the booking requests and planned itineraries of your potential renters; you have the option of declining. And it will be you showing the renter how your RV works. You set the nightly price; RVezy takes 20%.

Recent popular RVezy rentals included a motorhome that sleeps seven ($120 per night), a camper trailer that sleeps five to 10 people ($125 per night), and a motorhome that sleeps eight ($275 per night).

15 Reasons You Will Regret an RV in Retirement

Be a Good Neighbor

Do you have unused space in your garage, attic, shed, driveway or other property? For a fee, of course, store the belongings of others, from cars and RVs to … whatever. Need someone to help you rent out that space, insure it and cover the transaction? Turn to Neighbor , a website that brokers your unused space with people looking for storage.

“We allow anyone with extra storage space to list the availability of their garage, parking spot, warehouse, shed, or empty closet as available for storage,” says Colton Gardner of Neighbor. “This way, people can generate a passive income by just storing their neighbors’ stuff.”

Through Neighbor, you handle the requests for your space, decide whether to accept the offer, and arrange a time for the renter to show up. Like a good neighbor, Neighbor gets paid – on the renting end (listings are free). Neighbor absorbs 4.9% of the reservation.

We randomly searched spaces in the Bridgewater, N.J., area. A 12-by-12 basement in Bridgewater Township was renting for $38 for the first month. A 20-by-16 garage was renting for $200 a month.

Become a Professional Line Stander

The waiting doesn’t always have to be the hardest part, especially if you’re getting paid to wait in line. While there’s a company in New York City built around that task , you can turn to online services sites, such as TaskRabbit, to earn extra cash standing in line for someone else .

Professional line standers/sitters can make upwards of $35 an hour. They’ll hold a place in line for people seeking concert or theater tickets, waiting for a coveted restaurant table, queuing up at the Department of Motor Vehicles, saving you a spot for the next big sneaker release, you name it.

As a pro line stander, you’ll arrange for the right time for you and the person who hired you to switch places in line (as a courtesy, tell the people in the line around you what you’re doing and someone will be coming to take your place, not cut in front of them).

Rent Out Your Pool

The kids are grown and gone and you’re not the swimming type. Why not rent out that expensive hole in the ground?

II’s easy to see you could make a little lettuce, as the pandemic saw a huge uptick in business for pool companies that couldn’t keep up, with supply chain issues backlogging pool installations, sometimes for years.

One company that will help you turn your pool into cash by renting it out is Swimply . As with other online services brokerage sites, you do the listing (location, availability, price) and rental approval, Swimply collects and distributes payments. Swimply’s commission is 15%, meaning you keep 85% of the booking fee (pools in California listed on Swimply recently were charging $45 an hour; Swimply plays host to thousands of pools).

Swimply also offers host liability protection as well as property damage protection.

Rent Out Your Home Gym, Studio, or Tennis Court

Swimply doesn’t stop with just the pool. Sometime in 2022, the team behind Swimply will launch Swimply Spaces, allowing homeowners to rent out their tennis or basketball courts, home gyms, home studios, even magnificent back yards. Have a docked boat? Rent it out. Same with that horse farm you have on the side.

Expect Swimply Spaces to work much like Swimply and other online ownership-rental services. The space will be marketed and insured and the owner will collect the rental fee, minus Swimply Spaces’ commission.

How to make money online: 30 real ways

1. start a dropshipping business.

Dropshipping is a business model where you sell a product to a customer, but the supplier handles the storage, packaging, and shipping on your behalf. You can dropship through your own ecommerce store —just install a dropshipping app and you’ll gain access to dozens of suppliers across various product categories. Some dropshipping apps allow you to hand-pick your product images, edit item descriptions, and give your business a personalized vibe so people will love shopping with you.

What’s the best way to make money dropshipping? Most entrepreneurs focus on a few marketing strategies :

  • Running Facebook ads
  • Having influencers promote their products
  • Sending direct messages (DMs) to potential customers on social media

Ready to start a dropshipping business? Shopify is the platform most online entrepreneurs use to sell products without inventory. With Shopify dropshipping apps, you can source a variety of products and have them shipped to your customers.

2. Try print on demand

Print on demand (POD) is another popular way to earn money online. Many individuals have adopted this business model because it has lower overhead than other businesses.

Print on demand is similar to dropshipping in the sense that you don’t need to carry inventory or ship out products to customers yourself. There are two slight differences, though. First, you can make your own custom products, which is great for brand recognition. Second, you can choose from specific items rather than a vast range of categories. Most print-on-demand companies offer products that are easy to print on, like t-shirts, mugs, and tote bags.

The best way to make money with your print-on-demand business? Free marketing channels . Your best bet would be to promote your products for free on Instagram and TikTok, and through social media influencers who convert their audiences well.

You can get a complete overview of print on demand versus dropshipping by watching us get into a healthy debate with Wholesale Ted about the pros and cons of each business model.

3. Make money with affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular ways to make money online. Throughout the years, its popularity has gone up and down, but it continues to be an effective way to earn passive income. The best part about affiliate marketing is that you choose from a vast range of companies to partner with, including Shopify , Amazon , and Uber.

This business model allows you to earn a living by promoting other brands. Once you’ve signed up for an affiliate marketing program, you’ll start earning commissions from sales of retail products, software, apps, and more. While the commission may seem small, keep in mind that you can be an affiliate for several brands and promote a variety of products across different platforms.

If you really want to make money online doing affiliate marketing, your best bet is to focus on content marketing. By building out a blog with several pages of high-quality content, you create an asset you can call your own. Strategically place affiliate links in your blog posts to drive traffic to your affiliate partner’s website.

4. Start a YouTube channel

If others are profiting from YouTube , you can too. Your YouTube channel should focus on a single niche so you can build a strong, loyal audience. For example, you can create makeup tutorials, stream video games, review products, teach skills, create prank videos, or anything else you think there’d be an audience for.

The key to earning money on YouTube is creating content people want to watch. Enticing headlines and keyword-optimized descriptions can draw viewers to your videos. Once you hit the 1,000-subscriber mark, you become eligible to earn advertising revenue through running ads on your content.

5. Become an influencer

Building a personal brand can also help you make money online. Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo charges more than $2 million for a sponsored Instagram post, for example. While it may seem like reality stars, singers, and athletes are the biggest influencers, keep in mind that even smaller-scale influencers can make more money today than they did a few years back.

To become an influencer, you need to build a healthy following. The best platforms to get started on? Instagram and TikTok. Some of the biggest non-celebrity influencers often gained their first taste of exposure on these platforms. You might want to check out how to get more Instagram followers if you want to build a big Instagram audience.

To make money as an influencer, you can charge for sponsored posts, add affiliate links in your bio, sell your photos, sell ads on your own podcast, make and sell merch , get paid to appear at events, and more.

6. Create an online course

Selling courses is one of top strategies for earning money online. If you’re an expert in a particular subject, you can monetize your knowledge by creating online courses. These courses can be sold on platforms like Udemy or, if you already have a dedicated audience, through your own website. Some entrepreneurs are making as much as $5,000 per month from online courses .

To build a popular and successful course, look to trending courses in your niche for inspiration. Pay close attention to the reviews. Identify what aspects receive high praise and what elements are criticized. How can you build something that surpasses what’s already available? Aim to create content that addresses common complaints while incorporating the positive aspects that people appreciate.

The platform on which you choose to sell your course will influence your strategy for earning money online. With Udemy, there’s less need for promotion—it’s almost a set-it-and-forget-it situation. Perhaps you’ll want to give it a boost on some blogs or social media networks. If, on the other hand, the course is hosted on your own website, you might consider r unning ads to promote it. Additionally, you could build an email list to market future courses without the added expense of paid advertising. This can provide an effective route for earning money online organically.

how to make money online with courses

7. Publish an ebook

With Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing , it’s never been easier to publish an ebook. All you need to do is write the ebook, format it, create an ebook cover, publish it, and promote it.

You can choose to hire a writer for your ebook, a graphic designer to design the cover, and a manuscript editor to eliminate errors from the content. When researching the topic, focus on keywords based on popular searches on Amazon. The Keyword Tool is a great choice for finding the words people use while searching, so you can craft your title around them.

To generate sales for your ebook, focus on marketing tactics that are proven to attract customers. For example, you can give the first few copies of your book away for free. This helps you create buzz on social media and get some reviews. Getting reviews helps you gain customers via social proof . Other effective strategies for promoting your ebook include influencer marketing and video campaigns.

8. Start a blog

Blogging is one of the oldest methods for making money online. People who love writing tend to start blogs with a niche focus. For example, a blog about procrastination, cars, dropshipping, toys, etc., is often a narrow enough focus to build a loyal following and big enough that you can cover a lot of ground. For those looking to make money online fast, this method can be a rewarding venture.

You can start a blog on various platforms, such as Shopify (remove the checkout feature, so you don’t have to pay a subscription as you build it out) or WordPress. When you start your blog, focus on very specific keywords with a tight focus and continue to expand into other but still relevant categories as you grow and dominate new spaces. This will allow you to build a massive blog over time.

If you’re keen on earning extra cash, blogging offers diverse ways to achieve that goal. You can add affiliate links in your posts (don’t forget a disclaimer). You can monetize your blog by placing ads strategically in your posts. Sponsored posts can help you make money from specific brands—this is popular among review bloggers. Bloggers can also sell digital or physical products on their websites. You can also use a blog to build a personal brand that helps you get speaking gigs, television deals, or big contracts from clients.

9. Consider freelancing

The easiest way to make money online is to take your current job in your 9-to-5 role and do it online instead. For example, if you’re a writer, data entry specialist, graphic designer, teacher, developer, etc., you can market these skills and find clients online who are willing to pay you to apply them.

There’s a never-ending list of job platforms for each type of freelancer too. For example, freelance writers can apply for jobs on specific online writing job boards, but also on general freelance websites like Fiverr , Freelancer , Upwork , and all the others. If you find that your skills can’t be directly used to create income streams , you can try monetizing other transferable skills you may have.

To make money online as a freelancer, you need to start by building out a strong portfolio. That may mean doing free work for some reputable mid-tier brands to start. Once you create a strong portfolio, you can reach out to potential big clients to earn more money online. Remember, freelancing is a numbers game: the more applications you fill out and submit, the more likely you’ll be to get a response back.

10. Create an app

If you’re not a developer, you’re probably looking at this money-making idea and feeling a bit stuck. Fortunately, you can hire someone with programming skills to build an app for you. Sites like Toptal will connect you with plenty of app developers who are open to working with entrepreneurs to turn their vision into reality.

All you have to do is come up with a unique app idea, identify the audience you want to target, and create a brand image for your product. The programmer you hire will take care of things on the development front.

When it comes to making money with your app, your best bet will be to add it to Google Play and the App Store. And while it may seem counterintuitive, having a free app can help you make more than a paid app. With a free app, you can add ads or premium features to help you make money. Since the free app will attract a higher volume of people, it’ll be easier for you to upsell them.

make money with apps

11. Become a writer

With a growing interest in content marketing , more and more companies are looking for writers who can fill their web properties with great content. The secret to succeeding as a writer is to focus on a specific niche. Many writers try to be generalists, covering everything from food to tech. However, a niche focus sets you apart.

What about AI replacing human writers? While AI can generate content, it lacks the human touch. As a writer, your experience in a niche adds value. You can offer thoughts, experiences, and insider perspectives. That’s what brands want. That’s what they pay for.

When applying for writing jobs, be specific. Send relevant samples. If asked for a marketing piece, send one. Don’t send a finance article. Or a fitness one. Why? Hiring managers need to see your understanding of the niche.

Sites for finding freelance writing jobs include:

  • BloggingPro
  • Mediabistro
  • Be a Freelance Blogger

12. Do side gigs

Side gigs can help you make money online while you keep your full-time job. If you’re looking to make an extra couple of hundred dollars per month, this is a great idea. The work doesn’t always last long term, but it can.

Use platforms like Fiverr to find part-time gigs you can do online. As a new entrant in the gig economy, you’ll want to focus on offering a low price so you can get your first review. I’d recommend asking a friend to buy your gig and leave your first review so you can get started faster. Treat the friend like a client and actually deliver a finished product that you can feature in your portfolio.

Another aspect of Fiverr is that it’s largely a numbers game. If you look at top Fiverr users, you’ll see that they have multiple gigs available. The more gigs you have, the more likely it is that you will be found.

If you don’t want to get paid Fiverr prices, you can turn to platforms like FlexJobs to find side gigs. Under its jobs section, you can search for contract or telecommute opportunities. The great thing about the telecommute opportunities on FlexJobs is that you can apply for them in any city in the world.

FlexJobs has a variety of side gigs including writing, business, design, accounting, and more. So, if your talents don’t match up with anything else on this list of money-making ideas, you might want to try a side gig from FlexJobs. Applying to multiple opportunities will increase your chances of landing a few gigs in a short period.

13. Do translation work

Translation is a fairly underserved niche, meaning there’s less competition in this field than in other niche markets. To capitalize on the opportunity, you need to be fluent in at least two languages. If you’re bilingual or majored in a popular language in school, this may be a great money-making idea for you to try out.

You will need to show proof of your ability to translate without using machine translation tools. If you have a language degree or experience translating text, make sure to highlight that in your portfolio or résumé. Most companies will require a translation test, and you can’t use translation tools at any time to help you pass the test.

Sites where you can find translation jobs to make money online include:

  • People Per Hour
  • Protranslating
  • Translators Base

14. Sell your stuff

An easy way to make extra cash is to sell the stuff you no longer use. When using this strategy, ensure that the items you put up for sale align with the interests and needs of today’s buyers.

Most people immediately think of selling their junk like old CDs and DVDs. Considering the digital trends in 2024, CDs and DVDs are less likely to be sought after by buyers. So don’t waste your time trying to sell them.

When you’re thinking about selling your stuff, focus on items like electronics, furniture, toys, and crafts. You can list the same products on multiple platforms, including Amazon, Facebook Marketplace, and your own online store. Omnichannel selling will improve your chances of finding customers for your items.

Want to make a great first impression on the customer? Include high-quality product images in your listings. You can hire a Shopify Expert to create product photos for you or take a photography course that equips you with the skills to shoot and edit your own images.

15. Become an online tutor

If you want to make money online on your own schedule, consider becoming an online tutor. Studenomics covered a story of a person who made $2,100 in one semester from tutoring. Interestingly, he built up his client base through word of mouth , visibility, and great group rates.

If you have a teaching degree, you may be more likely to land a tutoring position. Having a degree or experience in the subject you’re tutoring is essential for this type of job. If you’ve spoken at a conference or event about the topic, you might also be considered for an online tutoring, teaching, or mentoring position.

While sciences and math often have a high demand for tutoring positions, you’ll also find English popular among international audiences. If you’re an expert on a topic, tutoring may be the right platform for you to make money fast.

You can find online tutoring jobs on platforms such as:

16. Drive your car

If you own a car, you can make some spare cash as an Uber driver or delivery person. Even without a car, you can deliver food and other essentials using a bicycle or moped. Uber drivers looking to make even more money can turn their vehicle into a moving billboard with Free Car Media , which wraps your car in a removable vinyl advert.

Interested in making money fast with Uber? If you legally run a side business, you could showcase your products to interested passengers—though not all will be interested. With prior consent, passengers may sift through products you have for sale under the driver’s seat. If they wish to buy but don’t have cash, you can utilize Uber’s tip function for payment. Always ensure that this approach complies with local laws and regulations.

17. Become a virtual assistant

As entrepreneurs build more businesses, the demand for virtual assistants grows. A virtual assistant is a self-employed individual providing various services remotely, such as writing, bookkeeping, social media management, and customer support.

Find virtual assistant gigs on sites like Virtual Office Temps , Indeed , or Upwork . Many have also succeeded by directly reaching out to brands and entrepreneurs. Combining job postings and proactive outreach could land your first client sooner than expected.

18. Become a Twitch streamer

While Twitch started as a gaming platform, it’s quickly evolving to include other types of content. Nowadays, Twitch streaming is an increasingly popular way to make money online. To make money fast on Twitch , you’ll need to grow your following. If you’re consistent, streaming on this platform can help you build a sizable audience fast.

You’ll need to find a popular game or channel that isn’t overly competitive so people can easily find your content. In order to get people to notice your streams, you’ll need to have a consistent style for your channel: Is it going to be funny, educational, or entertaining? Choose your path and stick to it.

There are five ways to monetize your Twitch channel:

  • Sell products
  • Offer brand sponsorships
  • Accept fan donations
  • Offer subscriptions
  • Run Twitch ads

As a Twitch streamer, you’ll want to focus on tapping into all five monetization methods to ensure the highest financial gains. With the right strategy and hard work, you can make a lot of money hosting Twitch streams.

19. Invest in stocks

Investing in stocks can be a way to make money quickly, but it’s not without risk, especially if you’re inexperienced. While the rewards can be high, you might also face losses.

If you have a 9-to-5 job, consider exploring your company’s financial programs. Does it allow investment in company stocks? If so, this could be an option. With company stock programs, your role as an employee may influence the organization’s success. Additionally, if your company offers an RRSP matching program, consider this as a way to save for retirement or a down payment on a home.

20. Sell photography

Whether you’re a professional photographer or just love snapping great pictures, you can make money online by selling your images. Sites like Shutterstock and Alamy are great places to showcase your work. These websites pay royalties to photographers when someone downloads a copy of their image.

If you’re looking to monetize your photography quickly, you can create a listing on Foap , a smartphone app that lets you upload your works and earn cash. When an agency, brand, or anyone else buys a photo or video from your digital Foap portfolio, the app creator shares the profit with you 50/50.

21. Sell clothes online

Have clothes you don’t wear anymore? Rather than letting them sit in your closet, sell them online. There are quite a few websites that let you sell apparel for cash, such as Poshmark , Refashioner , ThredUp , and Tradesy .

You can also explore Facebook buy and sell groups in your community to find people online and sell the items in person. Just be careful of scams and follow the recommended safety precautions.

22. Become an extreme couponer

If you’re looking to save and make a bit of money, couponing can be a viable option. Coupon Chief’s Pays-2-Share program , for example, lets you share coupons and earn a 2% to 3% commission on sales. The key is to share coupons that haven’t been used before.

This method resembles affiliate marketing, where you earn commissions through referral links. Many coupon companies pay their affiliates consistently, making this a legitimate way to earn online. For instance, Coupon Chief has paid over $1.3 million in commissions to date.

23. Buy and sell domain names

If you regularly buy domain names but fail to use them, you can always try to sell them for a profit. Selling domains is ultra-competitive, though. If you own a one-word .com domain, you’ll have a better chance of selling. Words that have a high search volume sell well too.

Also, domains that are on trend now have a better chance of selling. For example, a few years back, fidget spinner domains were an easier sell than they are today. You can search for domain names and buy a custom domain through the Shopify domain registration platform.

You can sell your domains on GoDaddy’s Domain Auction . Look through the domains with the highest bids to see what type of domains sell well. It’ll help you know whether or not your domains are worth selling and how much money you can make selling them.

24. Sell your designs online

Graphic design is an amazing skill that you can monetize in several ways. You can go the print-on-demand route and sell your designs on your own custom products. Alternatively, you can pitch your designs on a crowdsource platform like 99designs .

There’s also the option to create your own graphics and templates to sell on marketplaces like Envato or Creative Market . Or how about picking up some clients and working as a freelance graphic designer? According to PayScale , this role will net you $29.90 per hour, on average.

25. Test websites

If you’re passionate about user experience, UserTesting pays reviewers $10 to give other entrepreneurs feedback on their websites and apps. You’ll be given a set of questions to answer as you browse through a site. That’s one fast way to make money online.

You’ll communicate your ideas and feedback to the entrepreneur through a video while navigating their website or app. Your video is only 20 minutes long, so if you do three videos per hour, you’ll make $30. Other reviewers can take projects quickly, so you have to act fast when a new website or app needs to be reviewed.

26. Get a part-time job

When you’ve done whatever it takes to make money fast but struggle to make an impact, sometimes you’re left with no choice but to get a part-time job. You can browse part-time jobs on Indeed or a niche job board that caters to your field.

Some job websites require an upfront fee to register, so read the fine print carefully. Most sites let you filter for part-time and contract-based jobs, so you should have no problem finding relevant positions to apply for. With many companies hiring part-time, it’s easier than ever to make extra money without working a full week.

27. Become a TikTok consultant

One of the trendiest ways to make money online is to become a TikTok consultant. Brands will contact you for brainstorming video ideas, developing engaging bios, and more. It’s the perfect money-making opportunity for digital nomads —you can run the entire business from your smartphone. Compared to Instagram, TikTok is relatively new and untapped, so helping brands establish a solid presence on the app can potentially make you a fortune.

However, you need to have a few talents before you begin offering TikTok consultancy to businesses. The most important is knowing how to create viral videos that get people to engage with brands. If you don’t have the expertise to drive sales through this platform, you can still learn how to attract customers by taking this TikTok course .

28. Sell greeting cards online

If you have a knack for picking out the perfect greeting card for different occasions, this might be an easy way to make money online. However, it’s not recommended that you market your services to everyone and anyone—it’s not a smart way to do business. Instead, design or source greeting cards that appeal to a certain segment of the population.

For example, you can make greeting cards that cater to C-level executives wanting to thank their senior vice presidents for making profitable decisions last year. Or you can target healthcare professionals who want to thank their patients for choosing their clinic. For designing the cards, you can use an online graphic tool like Photoshop or Canva .

29. Offer virtual local tours

Do you know your town or city well? Share it with people by offering virtual tours. This can be a way for tourists and others to explore new places without leaving home.

You can use video calls to show historical sites, cultural spots, and local favorites. Share local stories and facts. Allow people to ask questions and see things up close. Offer different tours, like ones for food lovers or history buffs. Work with local shops so tour guests can buy local products.

30. Become a reseller

Reselling products is a way to make money without creating items. You can buy vintage or collectible items and then sell them. If you want to focus on specific products, you can become a certified distributor of a brand in your area.

Start by finding brands to resell on wholesale directories and platforms like AliExpress. Then, set up an online platform to sell your chosen products. Remember, you will need to manage inventory. This takes effort, but it doesn’t require making products.

Start your online earning journey today

Making money online can help you stay afloat during these troubled times, but it can also help you escape your 9-to-5 job so you can become a full-time entrepreneur. By brainstorming online business ideas and choosing to start an online business, you gain more financial freedom , improve your financial security, and inch closer to living life on your terms .

It really is possible to earn a living online if you work hard and stick with it. So, which money-making idea will you pursue first?

1. Pick up freelance work online

creative ways to make money 2022

Make money online through websites such as Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer.com. These sites offer opportunities to do a variety of freelance jobs, such as writing, programming, design, marketing, data entry and being a virtual assistant . Fluent in a second language? Check sites such as Gengo or Blend Express, or drum up business through a site of your own. No matter what freelancing you do, keep track of the going rate for the kind of work you provide so you know what to charge. Learn how to get started on Upwork .

A recent report from Freelancer.com found that creative writing jobs had the fastest growth in listings on its site in the second quarter of 2023, up 58%. And although generative artificial intelligence (AI) is being used more for content creation, it can’t fully do the work of human writers. Companies are looking for writers who know how to edit AI content and who have at least a basic understanding of search engine optimization — learning or beefing up SEO skills could be a lucrative side hustle. Some freelancers are charging $100 an hour or more for their freelance writing services.

Total time: It can take a while to get your first gig. Setup: 24-48 hours. How easy to start: Easy, if you have the expertise. How fast you'll get paid: Varies by site.

It takes Upwork up to 48 hours to approve your profile. But keep in mind it can take time to land your first freelance gig.

Payment varies by site. On Upwork the timeline for receiving earnings depends on the type of payment. Hourly contracts have a weekly billing cycle and you can withdraw funds 10 days later. Fixed-price contracts have a five-day waiting period. Project catalog contracts allow payment withdrawal after five days. And bonus payments also become available after five days. In each case, a client has to review your work. On Fiverr, you're paid when the work order is complete, but you can't withdraw funds for 14 days. (The waiting time is shorter for those in the Top Rated Sellers and Fiverr Studio Member ranks.)

Upwork and Fivver require users to be at least 18 to sell work. And Freelancer.com requires users to be at least 16.

Some sites require you to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

2. Test websites and apps

Another way to make money from home is on sites like UserTesting.com. You get paid for your thoughts on how well — or not so well — certain websites and apps work. You’ll have to complete a short test to be accepted, then you’ll be paid depending on the test type.

Total time: Approval time can vary. Setup: Less than an hour. How easy to start: Easy, if you have the tech gear and complete a sample test. Age threshold: 18+. How fast you'll get paid: 14 days.

The timeline for approval can vary.

Payment amounts vary based on the length of the tests. You get paid 14 days after completing a website or app test via PayPal.

You need to be at least 18.

You need a computer, internet connection and microphone.

Mobile app testers also need an Android or iOS mobile phone or tablet.

The practice test and most user testing requires English, German or French; some test opportunities may be in additional languages.

3. Learn to use AI tools

The use of generative artificial intelligence is on the rise. A recent report from PwC estimates that the North American economy will see a $3.7 trillion impact by 2030, thanks to the AI market.

So there’s no better time to learn how to make money by using AI tools. Some AI-related side hustles include:

Integrating AI tools as a freelancer, to help you create digital products or to edit AI content for a client.

Improving your advertising, marketing efforts and management of your existing small business.

Teaching others to use AI tools.

Total time: Depends on demand. Setup: Around 24-48 hours if using a site like Upwork or Freelancer.com. How easy to start:  If you’re already familiar with AI tools, it will be easier to get started. Age threshold: 16+ for Freelancer.com and 18 for Upwork. How fast you'll get paid: Varies by client or the number of products you sell and your chosen platform.

Give yourself time to get familiar with using AI tools.

You’ll need to meet the requirements of the freelance gig site you choose.

Payment will depend on your client and the site’s terms and conditions.

You’ll need a computer, internet connection and microphone.

4. Take surveys for money

You can make money from home by taking online surveys, but don’t expect to earn a lot. Survey sites don’t typically offer a big payoff, and many sites are more useful for earning gift cards than cash. Some of the more popular survey sites include Swagbucks and Survey Junkie. Read our analysis of survey sites to find out which one is best suited for you.

Total time: It will take a while. Setup: Just minutes. How easy to start: Very. Just register and begin. Age threshold: 13 to 18+. How fast you'll get paid: Varies by site.

Survey sites could be an option for how to make money online for beginners because you can register with a site and start taking surveys in a matter of minutes.

The time it takes to get paid depends on the survey site and how much time you dedicate to taking surveys.

Some sites let you cash out only after you hit a minimum earnings threshold.

Other survey sites issue points, which can be redeemed for cash (via PayPal) or gift cards.

Most survey sites have a minimum age requirement, which ranges from 13 to 18 (depending on the site) making these sites one idea for teens to make money online.

Individual surveys may have specific requirements. Don't be surprised if you are disqualified from a survey without much explanation.

5. Make money from your blog with affiliate links

If you’re a blogger who gets decent traffic, you could make money by joining an affiliate network. Affiliates (that’s you) get paid when someone clicks through from the website to the partner site and buys something there. Some bloggers make a lot of money this way, particularly those who do affiliate marketing full-time. Read more about affiliate marketing and other ways bloggers can make money .

Total time: It can take quite a while to build an audience. Setup: With blog templates, building a site is easy. How easy to start: While getting started can be easy, creating regular content may be another matter. Age threshold: Any. How fast you'll get paid: A month or two, on average.

First, you need a blog, social media account or other online presence that draws a healthy number of visitors each month.

Then, you need to apply for and be approved by an affiliate marketing network like CJ Affiliate, ShareASale, FlexOffers, Rakuten Advertising or Amazon Associates.

Payment schedules and thresholds vary by affiliate network, but expect to wait at least a month or two for your first paycheck.

Amazon Associates pays out earnings 60 days after the end of the calendar month in which they were earned.

ShareASale disburses earnings monthly.

A blog, social media account or other online presence that attracts a steady stream of visitors.

6. Sell your wares on Etsy

Have a penchant for woodworking, jewelry-making, embroidery or pottery? Sell your crafts on Etsy, the go-to site for artisans selling home goods, art and knickknacks. According to Etsy, the company has 95 million active buyers, and grossed over $13 billion in merchandise sales in 2022. Learn more about how to make money on Etsy .

Total time: It might take quite a while for customers to find you. Setup: Can be quite involved. How easy to start: Leaning toward "hard" on the difficulty meter. Age threshold: 13+. How fast you'll get paid: From the next day to seven days after a sale.

Opening an Etsy shop is the easy part. It can be done in a few hours.

The prep work before you open up shop is more time-consuming. You need merchandise to sell, photos and descriptions to post, a name for your shop and a business plan to help you succeed. Once that’s done, you’ll still need to find customers. Depending on what you’re selling, that could take weeks, which is why you should expect the overall time for this gig to be slow.

Once you sell an item, payment is deposited into your Etsy Payments account first, then to your bank account depending on your desired deposit schedule.

If you’re over 13 years old but under 18, you can sell on Etsy but would be considered a minor and must follow extra policies.

You need to have all necessary rights to the merchandise sold in your shop.

7. Self-publish an e-book

Writing a good book is tough, but the internet makes it easy to bring it to market. If you’re a writer who can churn out pages, you can use Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing to sell your books(s) on the Kindle store. It’s free to publish a book, and you can earn up to 70% of each sale in royalties. Write your book, enter a clear description and the details to be displayed and upload your manuscript. Set the price and see if it sells.

Total time: How fast can you type? We don’t have to tell you writing a book can be a slog. Setup: Quick and easy on KDP once the book is ready. How easy to start: Just start writing. Age threshold: 18+.  How fast you’ll get paid: Monthly, after you meet the $100 threshold.

Just because it’s simple to self-publish doesn’t mean your book will sell. Competition is high with millions of e-book titles on the Kindle Store.

Choose one of two royalty options: 70% or 35%. You’ll have to price your book between $2.99 and $9.99 if you select the 70% option. You have more pricing flexibility when you pick 35%.

You need to create a Kindle Direct Publishing account to get started.

Proper formatting is important. Amazon says most Microsoft Word documents convert to e-books easily, but other formats are also supported.

8. Get advertising revenue from your blog or YouTube channel

Turn your cat videos into cash videos. If your YouTube videos or blog posts draw a big audience, you may be able to make money from advertising. YouTube sets 1,000 subscribers as the benchmark for applying to the YouTube Partner Program if you want to place ads on your channel. You can apply with 500 subscribers for other monetizing features like channel memberships. You can also use Google’s AdSense, the same ad platform on YouTube, to put relevant ads on your blog or website for earning potential. Read more about how to make money on YouTube and Google AdSense .

Total time: It can take several weeks to get up and running. Setup: Fairly easy. How easy to start: Depends on how good you are at producing interesting videos. Age threshold: 18+. How fast you'll get paid: Could take a long while to earn the first payout; then monthly.

Signing up for Google AdSense is pretty easy, but to use AdSense with YouTube, you’ll need to be part of the Partner Program.

You can use AdSense on a website or blog with fewer eligibility requirements.

Allow at least two months for ad revenue to start trickling in.

You need to earn at least $100 before you're eligible for a payout.

Once you hit the $100 threshold, earnings are issued between the 21st and 26th of the following month.

Your own website that has been active for at least six months.

For YouTube, you need at least 1,000 subscribers.

You must be at least 18.

9. Become an Instagram influencer

Companies are using Instagram influencers — people with large, dedicated followings on the platform — to rep their products. You can get in on the action by applying for opportunities via a marketing platform like Open Influence or Aspire, or by contacting the brands you want to work with. Read more about how to make money on Instagram . (You can also make money on TikTok this way.)

Total time: You'll need to stick with it. Setup: Quick and easy. How easy to start: Not that easy. Read: Must build following to gain influence. Age threshold: 13+. How fast you'll get paid: Varies on partnerships.

Creating an Instagram account is quick, but building a following can take months or even years.

Once you have the numbers, you'll need to find paid opportunities. You can do this via affiliate networks or by pitching brands you want to work with.

The time to receive your payment will depend on the terms of your agreement, but affiliate networks typically pay out earnings the month after a campaign is completed.

An Instagram account with a dedicated, engaged following.

You'll also need to meet the requirements of any affiliate network.

10. Monetize your Twitch channel

Gaming could be a way to make money from home if you have a steady following on Twitch, the go-to site for gamers. Streamers can receive donations from viewers and even get a share of subscription and ad revenue if they reach Affiliate or Partner status. Learn more about how to make money on Twitch .

Total time: This can be a long game. Setup: Quick and easy. How easy to start: Easy to start; takes a while to build a following. Age threshold: 13+. How fast you'll get paid: Monthly.

You can launch a Twitch channel and start streaming in a day, but it will take weeks or even months to build a following.

You may be able to withdraw donation revenue rather quickly, depending on the payout method.

Subscription and ad revenue earned as a Twitch Partner or Affiliate is paid out around the 15th of every month, and you must have a balance of at least $50 for most payout methods (it's $100 for wire transfers).

You need to hit certain viewership and broadcast milestones to become a Twitch Affiliate or Partner and qualify for a share of game sales, ads and subscription revenue.

11. Sell your photography

Turn your photographs into cash via sites like Fine Art America, which lets you upload your images to sell as prints, T-shirts, phone cases and more. Other marketplaces for photographers include SmugMug, 500px and PhotoShelter. Some sites require a subscription but may provide features ranging from cloud storage to password-protected galleries and a customized website.

Total time: Buyers need to find you — and like your work. Setup: Just a few hours. How easy to start: If you have a library of photos, you're on the way. Age threshold: Varies. How fast you'll get paid: Depends on your sales platform.

You can set up a profile with sites like SmugMug, PhotoShelter or Fine Art America in a few hours, assuming you have a body of original work.

Payment varies widely depending on the site.

Fine Art America: Payment issued after 30-day return window expires. Sent on the 15th of each month.

PhotoShelter: Payment issued at time of sale to your chosen payment method (PayPal, Stripe, etc.).

SmugMug: You can request payment be issued the following month if you have a balance of at least $5.

Requirements vary by site, but you need to have all necessary rights to the images you sell.

Some side hustles don't even require you to leave the house. Or if they do, it might just be a short walk around the block with a furry friend. Working from home requires a little creativity and a stick-to-it spirit. Here are some excellent ideas for side gigs from home:

12. Become a dog walker with Rover or Wag

Love dogs? Choose dog walking as a beginner's way to make money . Apps like Wag and Rover offer on-demand dog walking, so you can pick up walks when your schedule allows. If you have space (and your landlord’s permission, if you rent), you could offer overnight dog boarding. Read the fine print if you sign up for these services

Total time: Building a client base may take some time. Setup: Can take a few weeks to be approved. How easy to start: Love pets? You're good to go. Age threshold: 18+. How fast you'll get paid: Two days to a week.

It takes about 5 to 10 business days for your Rover profile to be reviewed and approved.

The application process for Wag takes about two weeks and you must pass a background check and pet care quiz.

For Rover or Wag, you’ll need to live in an area where the service operates.

If you want to pet-sit in your own home, you’ll need an apartment or house that allows pets.

You’ll have to pass a background check.

13. Sell unused gift cards

Make extra money by selling unused or partially used gift cards on a site like CardCash or GiftCash. CardCash notes it will pay you up to 92% of the card’s value, or you can trade in your card for one you’ll use. Read more about what to do with unwanted gift cards .

Total time: In minutes if your gift card is for a popular store. Setup: Easy. How easy to start: The more gift cards you have to sell, the better. Age threshold: Old enough to have a credit card. How fast you'll get paid: A few days to about two weeks.

You can get an instant offer or quote via sites like CardCash and GiftCash.

You can sell gift cards at kiosks and participating retail locations to get cash the same day, or try to sell it online. The latter takes longer, but you may get a better offer for your gift card.

Your gift card may need to meet a minimum balance to be resold. Not all cards will generate offers.

Gift cards with expiration dates may not be eligible.

14. List your spare bedroom on Airbnb

Renting out your home or spare bedroom on vacation rental sites is another way to make extra money. Be prepared to spend some money to clean and keep up the property, replace home goods and pay toward service fees. And scrutinize your rental agreement, HOA rules and zoning or other restrictions before you get started.

Total time: Demand drives success, and that depends on your location. Setup: A listing can be created and live in hours. How easy to start: If you have a place to rent, it's a simple process. Age threshold: 18+. How fast you'll get paid: A day or more after check-in.

You can create a listing and start accepting reservations on the same day.

Payment is typically disbursed about 24 hours after your guest’s scheduled check-in time, but processing time for that payment depends on the payout method.

Comply with any rules governing short-term or vacation rentals in your property, including city ordinances and rules issued by your landlord, condo board or homeowners association.

There's online and at-home ways to make extra money — and then there's a third alternative: offline. This version of the gig economy may require more work, but the upside can be substantial. Since there’s no escaping the internet these days, some of these offline methods do have online components:

15. Sell your gently used clothes

A woman makes extra money by selling her clothes.

Selling clothes you no longer wear is a quick way to make some money. Start with local consignment shops to make money quicker or use sites like ThredUp and Poshmark to find buyers. When listing items online, be sure to take clear, well-lit photos of your pieces and research similar items to set competitive prices. Get tips on how to sell your clothing .

Total time: Varies by sales channel. Setup: Easy and fast. You can simply go to a consignment shop or fill a box with clothes and send it in. How easy to start: Easy. Cleaning out the closet may be the hardest part. Age threshold: 13 for Poshmark, 18 for ThredUp. How fast you'll get paid: Varies by sales channel.

You can sell used clothing and accessories several ways, but they're all pretty quick to start.

Fast: A brick-and-mortar consignment store like Plato's Closet will give you cash on the spot.

Medium: Other in-person and online consignment shops pay you when your items sell, or when they receive and inspect your items. Either way, allow at least a month for your payout.

Gently worn shoes, clothing and accessories.

Items will go through various inspections before being accepted. For example, ThredUp checks items for pilling, fading, shrinkage, missing parts (like buttons) and stains.

16. Trade in old phones, electronics for cash

Have an old phone, iPad, laptop or gaming system lying around? Sell it on a site like Swappa, Gazelle or Facebook Marketplace. Check out Amazon’s trade-in program, which pays participants in Amazon gift cards — and eBay, too. If you’re in a rush, try an ecoATM kiosk, which offers cash on the spot for your device.

Total time: Lots of options, so your time spent will vary. Setup: A breeze. How easy to start: Easy, especially if your phone is in good shape. Age threshold: Typically 18; check terms of service. How fast you'll get paid: Varies by where you sell.

Selling directly (Swappa, OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace): In most cases, you take photos of the phone, verify the electronic serial number is clean and post your listing. Some sites review and approve postings, but the time is minimal. Fees vary. Swappa, for example, charges a 3% seller fee.

Selling to reseller (Gazelle): Answer a few questions online for an instant quote. Then send in your device and get paid once the company confirms its condition is as described.

Selling directly: When you get paid depends on how quickly your phone or device sells. Once the item sells, payment is fast.

A used phone, laptop, gaming system, etc.

Cell phones: You need to verify the phone is not stolen or under a repayment plan. Check terms of service for additional requirements, such as no activation lock.

17. Get a babysitting gig

Everyone from college students to recent retirees can make money by watching other people’s children. Word-of-mouth referrals from friends and family are still a great way to get started, but you can also create a profile for free on Care.com or Sittercity to expand your reach. Note any specialized skills, such as CPR certifications, to make yourself more marketable.

Total time: Online setup takes minutes; neighborhood referrals may take a while. Setup: Just minutes. How easy to start: Getting the word out is the main thing. Age threshold: Very young if you're using referrals. 18+ online. How fast you'll get paid: When the parents come home.

You can create a profile on Care.com or Sittercity in a matter of minutes.

You typically get paid when you complete your gig, whether by a service or direct from the customer.

You need to be at least 18 to list as a caregiver on Care.com and Sittercity.

Clients may request a background check.

18. Rent out your car

creative ways to make money 2022

City-dwellers often don’t use their cars for days or weeks at a time. That idle time can translate to extra money with services like Getaround and Turo, which let you rent out your car by the hour or day. You take home the majority of those earnings, while Getaround or Turo takes a cut for protecting your car while it’s being rented.

Total time: Demand for your car will depend on the local market. Setup: It takes about a half hour to set up an account. How easy to start: With an appropriate vehicle, it's easy. Age threshold: 21+ with a valid driver's license for Turo; Getaround does not list an age requirement. How fast you'll get paid: Varies by site.

You can create a listing on Turo or Getaround in under 30 minutes.

Turo initiates payment within three hours of the end of the rental, but you can expect it to take a few days for your bank to process the deposit. (This is the case for all trips after the first one, which takes a few days for Turo to send.)

Getaround rental earnings accrue monthly and are paid out on the 15th of the following month. Payments are made via check or PayPal.

If you lease your car, check the terms of your agreement and financing documents to make sure you’re allowed to share it.

Your car must meet certain requirements (make/model/year/mileage) and satisfy maintenance and safety standards. You may also be asked to agree not to list on other platforms.

19. Sign up for TaskRabbit

If you actually enjoy putting together Ikea furniture or standing in long lines, you may be cut out for doing tasks for others. Websites like TaskRabbit can connect you with people who need help with a variety of things, such as moving, cleaning, delivery and handyman services. The site also offers several virtual and online tasks, such as helping with a research project or data entry. Read about how to get started on TaskRabbit .

Total time: Local demand for your skills will determine the time you spend. Setup: A couple of hours, then some time for approval. How easy to start: Easy, though you'll need to do some research. Age threshold: 18+. How fast you'll get paid: A few days after a job.

You can set up your profile and register in a matter of hours, but can't start accepting tasks until your profile is approved by TaskRabbit.

Once approved, you need to pay a $25 fee, so you may first want to research your market and the value of your skills to determine if that fee is worth it to you.

You're paid after the task is completed through direct deposit to a checking account. Payment typically takes a few days to appear in your account.

You need to be at least 18 to start working with TaskRabbit.

Prospective Taskers must also pass a background check.

20. Become a private tutor

Parlay your math, science, foreign-language or test-prep expertise into a lucrative side gig by becoming a private tutor. You can tutor people online or in-person. What you charge can depend on your experience, expertise and what’s in demand. To get started, see what types of tutors are needed on Craigslist or create a profile on sites like Tutor.com or Care.com. You can also advertise your services at local schools and community centers.

Total time: Varies by subject matter. Some companies might require a minimum availability per week (e.g., Tutor.com requires 5 hours). Setup: Can be a bit involved. How easy to start: Students will have to find you, and that might take a while. Age threshold: Any. How fast you'll get paid: Depends on the platform; check the terms of service.

Startup time depends on demand in your area. It could take a while before you get your first student.

If you haven't tutored before, you'll want to allow for time to prep so students feel like they're getting the most out of their time with you.

How quickly you get paid depends on whether you tutor via a platform or in-person; either way, it likely won't take long.

You'll need deep knowledge in an area that people need help understanding, like mathematics, a foreign language or test prep.

Educational requirements might apply. Some tutors might be required to be currently enrolled in a four-year university or have at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year university.

21. Drive for Uber, Lyft

Join Uber or Lyft (or both) and make money by driving passengers around. Just don’t forget to factor in gas and maintenance costs. You need an eligible car in good condition and must agree to a background check and a review of your driving history. Learn how to become an Uber driver or how to earn with Lyft .

Total time: Depends on your market demand. Setup: A few weeks. How easy to start: Not difficult, but you'll need the right type of vehicle. Age threshold: Depends on the service. For Uber, you must be licensed to drive in your locality with one year of licensed driving experience (or three years if you're under age 25). With Lyft, age varies by region from 21-25. How fast you'll get paid: Very fast. Either instantly or within days.

Allow some time for the application process, background check and car inspection.

Lyft and Uber can pay you instantly through a debit card or transfer earnings to your bank account pretty quickly.

A car with four doors. It must also meet other requirements, such as year, physical condition, etc.

Let your car insurance company know of your plans before you start driving.

22. Make deliveries for Amazon, Uber Eats

Take advantage of the growing delivery trend and sign up for a service like Instacart, Uber Eats, Postmates, DoorDash or Amazon Flex. You get paid per delivery, in most cases, and can even earn tips. A car isn’t always required — Postmates and, in some cities, DoorDash, lets you use a bike or scooter to make deliveries. However, a background check is almost always part of the deal. Learn more about how to get started with Amazon Flex , Uber Eats and Instacart .

Total time: Depends on your market demand. Setup: About a week. How easy to start: Easy, if you have dependable transportation. Age threshold: Varies by the service, but at least 18 if not older. How fast you'll get paid: Varies by vendor.

The background check can take a few days, and timing can vary.

Payments from these services also vary, but are generally issued weekly or quicker.

You'll need a way to deliver items. It could be a car, scooter or bike, depending on the service.

A smartphone is necessary to accept and process jobs.

Each delivery service has a minimum age requirement, but it varies by service.

23. Find work as a housesitter

If you’re willing to watch someone’s home — and maybe feed the pets, water the plants and take out the garbage — become a housesitter. Tap your personal network for referrals or try out HouseSitter.com, which connects homeowners with housesitters.

Total time: Depends on your market demand. Setup: Minutes — or more if you try to drum up business by referrals. How easy to start: That can depend on the need in your area. Age threshold: Varies by site. How fast you'll get paid: Typically at the end of a gig; make arrangements with clients.

You can create a profile on HouseSitter.com in a matter of minutes, though it may take time to secure your first housesitting gig.

You typically get paid by the homeowner when you complete your gig.

Most sites have an age requirement.

24. Sign up to be a mystery shopper

Businesses often want to know how they’re performing from a customer’s perspective. Sign up to be their eyes and ears. You can apply online via sites like IntelliShop, BestMark and Sinclair Customer Metrics. Just beware of scams and do thorough research before signing on.

Total time: Varies by site. Setup: Applying takes little time, but approval can take a while. How easy to start: Relatively easy if you have required transportation and tech. Age threshold: May vary by site. How fast you'll get paid: Varies by company.

The application process is typically quick, but then it's in the company's hands. It can take days, or more, to assess your application, depending on demand.

Payout timing and method vary by company. BestMark, for example, issues payments monthly.

Most mystery shopping services have an age requirement. You have to be at least 18 to shop for BestMark.

Depending on the service, you may need internet access.

25. Put your drone to work

The market for drones is expanding. Companies hire out work like aerial inspection, photography and land mapping. So if you’re already a drone enthusiast, why not make extra money with your aircraft? You need to pass a test to become a drone pilot and register your drone with the Federal Aviation Administration. Then, you can apply for flying gigs. Learn how to make money with drones .

Total time: Depends on demand. Setup: You'll need to make time to pass a test. And then find clients. How easy to start: If you already have a drone, you're likely qualified. Age threshold: 16+. How fast you'll get paid: Varies by company.

Give yourself more than a month to study, schedule and pass a written test.

You also need to find clients.

Payment will depend on your client.

You’ll need a drone.

To do this legitimately, you’ll need a certificate that involves passing an aeronautical knowledge test. Note that the test costs $175.

A background check is also needed.

Watch out for making money scams

The internet is full of opportunities to make money online or from home, but many are questionable, if not outright scams. Be wary of any “opportunity” that asks for an upfront fee, wants you to pay for certification, or requests your Social Security number or any financial information, such as your credit card number.

Still unsure if an opportunity is legit? Look for community forums, like those on Reddit, for unfiltered reviews and complaints. Also, check if the company has a Better Business Bureau profile. The BBB assigns ratings based on reported complaints, business transparency and other factors.

Monitor your money during trying times. If you’re facing financial anxiety, NerdWallet can find ways to save. Join for free .

Side jobs such as testing websites, taking surveys and selling your used stuff online take minimal time to set up and have few requirements. You can also earn passive income through affiliate marketing or renting out your vehicle.

Some of the fastest ways to make money from home include selling used clothes and electronics, babysitting and renting out a room on a vacation rental website.

It’s tough to find jobs that pay on the spot. You can check local or online job listings for paying gigs like moving couches or painting a fence for someone in your area. If you need money immediately, consider other ways to get fast cash . For example, if you have any jewelry, instruments or new electronics, you can get a pawnshop loan . Your credit won’t be a barrier to getting the loan and if you can’t pay it back within the loan term, the pawnshop will sell your item but your credit score won’t take a hit.

14 Fun And Creative Ways To Make Money

R.J. Weiss, CFP®

  • Updated January 18, 2024

Here are 14 creative ideas for making money (both online and offline), whether you’re looking for a fun way to make some extra cash on the side or a full-time business idea.

Table of Contents

#1. Play and Test Pre-Release Video Games

Earning potential : Up to $100 per month.

Video game companies hire testers to play pre-release games in an effort to find bugs before the games are available to the public. If you enjoy playing video games, it’s a great way to get paid for your hobby .

Video game testers work as independent contractors for third parties, which companies like Nintendo hire to provide feedback. The biggest such company is Keyword Studios , which works with 20,000 independent contracts across the world.

On a smaller scale, there are apps like Mistplay for Android , which allows you to earn points by playing existing and pre-release games. You can then redeem those points for gift cards.

You’ll earn less with Mistplay than you would by working directly for a company like Global Beta Testing, but what’s nice is that you can get started today.

Learn more : How to Get Paid to Play Games .

#2. Create an Online Course

Earning potential : Top course instructors earn seven figures per year on Udemy.

When you hear the words “online course,” you may initially think you have nothing to teach people. But before you rule out this option, consider the story of Teresa Greenway .

On food stamps, and having to be home to take care of her autistic son, Greenway decided to create an online course about baking sourdough bread, which was one of her hobbies.

It may not sound like a bread course would bring home much dough, but her course generated $86,000 of income in just the first two years.

Sites like Udemy and Skillshare make it easier than ever to share your expertise online, so take some time to browse the current offerings and see if you find inspiration to create a class of your own.

Thinkific, an online course platform for creators, has an excellent 10 step guide to launching a course .

#3. Grow a Hobby YouTube Channel

Earning potential : For every 1,000 views your channel gets, you’ll earn around $4. Learn more about the earning potential is this article on how much YouTubers make .

The world’s most popular YouTube channels bring in millions of dollars each year . While starting a channel that grows to that level is difficult, there are also tens of thousands of smaller channels that make a great side income for their creators.

For some people, that might be general hobbies like carpentry, cooking, crafts or home brewing. But YouTube has a diverse and worldwide audience, so don’t discount the potential of more obscure hobbies; chances are there are enough people who share your interests to support a channel. And often, starting a channel in a less competitive niche makes it easier to get established and garner eyeballs.

As an example, the YouTube channel Primitive Technology , which was launched in 2016, documents creator John Plant’s adventures in building structures with primitive materials and tools.

The success of his channel led to a book deal, as well as a consistent stream of extra income from the ad revenue generated by his more than 10 million subscribers.

You can learn more about launching your own channel in Shopify’s in-depth post, Lights, Camera, Cash: 7 Ways to Earn Money From YouTube Today .

#4. Sell Your Photos

Earning potential : It takes time to build up inventory across all the popular stock photo sites. But the work compounds (because you can sell each photo multiple times), which makes it a legitimate source of passive income .

Have a flair for photography? One of the more creative ideas for making money is selling your photos online. You’ll earn cash each time your image is purchased.

One good photo that really resonates with people can earn an impressive amount. And even if you only bring in a little bit of extra cash from each photo, it’ll add up quickly if you post a lot of pictures.

There is no shortage of stock photography sites you can sell your pictures on.

Here are a few of the bigger ones:

  • DepositPhotos
  • GettyImages
  • Shutterstock

If you have certain pictures that are performing very well, you can even consider selling high-quality prints on an eBay, Amazon or an Etsy shop.

#5. Design Graphics

Earning potential : Medium to high. Skilled freelance graphic designers are very valuable to businesses and can often charge a premium price.

Graphic design, with options such as  logo design  or infographic design, is a creative hobby that can generate good money. Pursued as a part time job or an online business, it can be one of the absolute highest-paying side hustle ideas .

Businesses are constantly in need of graphics, including everything from brochures to infographics to logos. And while getting a full-time job as a graphic designer typically involves a design degree, freelancing as a graphic designer is all about your portfolio — which can include non-client samples you created to show off your skills.

Learn more : Our guide to getting started as a freelance graphic designer .

#6. Start an Etsy Shop

Earning potential : There’s strong potential for Etsy store owners. It’s possible to make over six figures with an Etsy store, although most owners make a few hundred dollars per month.

The opportunities on Etsy go far beyond selling crafts (though selling crafts can be lucrative). If you have any kind of artistic skill, the site can be a great place to get your feet wet as an online business owner.

You can quickly set up a shop, make some product listings, set your prices and start selling.

Etsy is a smart path because you can do it on the side on your own schedule, or turn it into a full-time online business once you pick up momentum.

It’s not unheard of for people to make good money on Etsy, but make sure you set your prices at a level where you can still afford materials and turn a profit.

Learn more : Read our guide on how to make money on Etsy and check out our list of the best things to sell online .

#7. Become a Freelance Writer

Earning potential : High. Professional freelance writers can earn a six-figure income.

Freelance writing is another skill-based yet creative endeavor that can be anything from a small side hustle to a part time job to a full time, six-figure career.

At the lower end of the scale, you can work for what’s called a “content mill,” which is all about cranking out as many articles as possible — often, without much regard for quality.

This can be an OK way to make some extra money in your spare time, but you want to avoid it as much as possible because there are much better opportunities available. Check out our guide to starting your career as a freelance writer to learn more.

From there, the key is to specialize in one (or a small handful) of topics.

If you’re looking to grow your creative side, look at some of the most interesting jobs on Upwork and you’ll often find opportunities like the one below, which would give you the chance to write romance, crime, religious, sci-fi and horror novels.

Or, in what I’d consider a more standard gig, working as a copywriter for a small real estate office:

There are hundreds upon hundreds of creative ways to make good money with freelance writing. Spend 15-30 minutes seeing what’s available on Upwork .

And if you’re interested, read our guide to getting your first job on Upwork .

The objective is to find a high-paying niche you enjoy immersing yourself in, while taking advantage of your existing skills and abilities.

#8. Retail Arbitrage

Earning potential : Medium. Takes some work to find a niche, but can be a great source of side income.

One growing money-making opportunity is retail arbitrage, which is also known as money flipping or reselling. What you’re doing here is buying a product in one place and reselling it for a profit somewhere else.

If you frequent garage sales, flea markets, Goodwill stores or the far-back sale racks at discount stores like Marshalls and T.J.Maxx, you can make money reselling those items.

There are multiple business models that resellers have had success with:

  • Buy from garage sales and sell online . Many resellers buy products at garage sales or other similar venues like flea markets, and then sell them online via sites like eBay or Amazon (or their own online store).
  • Buy in-store and sell online . This involves finding something really cheap at a store like Walmart or Walgreens and reselling it online, where there is a much larger audience.
  • Buy online and sell online . With this strategy, you find items online that go for below market value and then resell them where they’ll fetch a higher price. This is a good idea if you really understand a specific market well (e.g., trading cards) and you can spot an opportunity due to something like a poor listing description or poor photos that allows you to buy the item at below market value.
  • Buy used and refurbish . Here, you’re buying used items, refurbishing them and then reselling them (either locally or online). Furniture is common (e.g., wooden bookshelves or old doors, where a fresh coat of paint can help the item fetch a much higher price).
  • Buy in bulk and resell . Buy items in bulk at a discount, then resell them one by one for a higher price. Scan our list of the best items to sell online to get ideas.

Learn more : Check out this Planet Money podcast episode to learn more about retail arbitrage.

#9. Mystery Shopping

Earning potential : Low.

Mystery shopping is a very legitimate side hustle with a lot of opportunity. The pay is on the lower end at around minimum wage, but in some cases you get free food or free products — or even a luxurious experience like a vacation — as part of the gig.

As an example, The Ways To Wealth contributor Jenni Sisson has been on over 100 mystery shopping trips . This includes trips to a waterpark with her family and enjoying a fine dining experience that would have cost over $100.

How the industry works is that you first get set up with a reputable agency. These agencies have an inventory of jobs available in your area. Once you’re signed up with an agency, you can scan what’s available, pick what interests you, and complete the job.

To learn all the ins and outs of making money as a mystery shopper, including the best agencies in your area, check out: Mystery Shopper Jobs – a Complete Beginner’s Guide to Secret Shopping .

#10. Create a Unique Service on Fiverr

Earning potential : Medium to high.

On one hand, Fiverr is a legitimate freelance marketplace where you can make money by offering services like freelance writing, graphic design and voiceovers.

And if you’re skilled in one of those areas it’s a legitimate way to make money online.

On the other hand, Fiverr is also home to creatives who use very unusual ways to make money.

Some fun examples include Elmo rap videos:

Or, get Simpsonized:

So, almost any fun way to make money can work on the site — although they won’t all generate a ton of revenue.

Most freelance marketplaces allow you to submit a proposal to a company looking for labor. Often, you’re then competing with dozens of other freelancers vying for that same job.

Fiverr is the opposite. You create a service, called a gig, with the objective of people coming to you to buy.

To get started, come up with three to five different gig ideas, list them on the platform, and see if any get any takers.

Learn more : How to make money on Fiverr .

#11. Teach Live Classes to Kids

Earning potential : Medium to high.

Most tutoring sites have you work with children one-on-one. The subject matter is predetermined and you’re paid by the hour (typically around $15 to $20).

A new company called Outschool approaches online learning in a much different way.

With Outschool you pick the subject you teach, as well as create the curriculum. Subjects include standard math, science and language, as well as more creative disciplines like art, baking and dance. Actually, two of the most popular classes on the platform are an introduction to mindfulness for kids and a discussion of the Broadway musical Hamilton .

You can learn more by watching the video below:

#12. Become a Field Agent

Earning potential : Low.

Field Agent is a popular app, available for both iOS and Android, that allows you to make money doing random research jobs at nearby retail establishments.

A typical job would be visiting a store and taking a picture of a specific product on display (companies want to make sure their product is displayed and priced properly).

As it allows you to search jobs by proximity, it’s a great app to pop open when you’re running errands to see if a store has any tasks. You’re also able to see how much the job pays and the estimated time, so it’s easy to see if a job is worth it.

You won’t make a killing with this one, but it can be a fun and quick way to make a little bit of easy money — especially if you do the research tasks while you’re already running errands.

Related : Apps that pay you to walk .

#13. License Business Ideas

Earning potential : High.

Stephen Key, inventor and best-selling author of One Simple Idea: Turn Your Dreams into a Licensing Goldmine While Letting Others Do the Work , defines licensing as “renting your ideas to manufacturers.”

Licensing is a legitimate — although not simple — way to earn passive income.

The process entails coming up with an idea, pitching the idea to a manufacturer, and then agreeing to an ongoing royalty with the company.

What’s interesting is that ideas don’t have to be groundbreaking or even expensive to prototype.

As Key explains about one of his simple ideas that broke through:

“I loved basketball, and so I shot hoops in my office with an indoor Nerf set. The backboard was boring; it had just a small image of Michael Jordan. Why not shape the backboard itself into an image of Michael Jordan? Three days after I contacted Ohio Art, they sent me a contract. I was extremely fortunate to earn royalties for 10 years. The Michael Jordan Wall-Ball was in every major retailer; there were even commercials on Saturday morning. If my memory serves me correctly, I made about $100,000 that first year. Not bad for a $10 prototype.”

The way Key keeps costs low is by:

  • Filing a provisional patent (estimated $100).
  • Creating a sell sheet to pitch manufacturers (under $80).

With just these two things, Key has been able to pitch and sell licensing agreements to Fortune 500 companies.

To learn more, check out A Beginner’s Guide: How to Rent Your Ideas to Fortune 500 Companies .

#14. Open a Business in the Metaverse

Earning potential : Low to Medium.

The term “metaverse” refers to a virtual world that mimics the real world but takes place entirely online. And while that sounds futuristic, the rate of growth (and the money going into these virtual worlds) is no small matter.

As noted in our digital real estate article, a plot of land in the virtual world known as Decentraland recently sold for $900,000 .

The thing to understand about metaverses is that they are entire economies by themselves. They need designers, real estate brokers and building contractors; these are all real ways people are making money in different metaverses.

To learn more, check out this Forbes article: Making Money in the Metaverse .

Creative Ways to Make Money FAQ

Yes, in the sense that they require a combination of writing and design skills. However, because your job is to represent a company or brand, drive sales and interact with customers, there are often strict rules about what types of content you can post. So this may not always be the best bet if you’re someone who is looking for a purely creative outlet. You can learn more in our guide to social media jobs .

Outside of getting a traditional publishing contract — which is possible but takes tremendous skill — one good way is through self-publishing. Amazon makes it easy to create and sell both e-books and physical books, and many authors do quite well with this approach. At the same time, it’s significantly more difficult to generate extra income via self-publishing than through freelancing, where demand for capable writers is strong and pay rates tend to be relatively high.

You can , but it takes a lot of good luck and most people fail. Choosing stocks is hard, and even most professionals can’t beat the overall stock market on a consistent basis. However, here’s a different way to make a little extra money from stocks: there are a number of trading platforms that will give you free shares just for signing up .

We wrote an entire article on that topic, which you can find here: How to Make Money as a Kid .

Fun Ways to Make Money for Creatives: Final Thoughts

In fact, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

After all, the definition of creativity is coming up with original ideas. Therefore, you may want to use this list as a way to brainstorm ideas on your own.

A great starting point is to list those ideas on Fiverr . You’ll often get quick feedback on whether that idea is worth pursuing and pouring more time into.

It’s a slow journey to build up regular visitors and readers, but once you do it’s impossible to make significant sums of money. Through blogging, you can make money from placing adverts on your blog, placing affiliate links in your articles, selling digital products (like online courses), and selling services (like coaching).

11. Data Entry

Data entry is another job option that isn’t overly lucrative, but if you want an easy way to make some money easily in a non-stressful way then it could be something you consider. However, data entry appeals to lots of people so the jobs can be competitive. Axion Data Services, DionData Solutions, and DataPlus+ are three employers that regularly hire data entry clerks.

12. Transcribing

Transcription is similar to data entry, but instead of converting data from one source to another, you’ll be converting audio files into text. It’s therefore essential to be able to type quickly and accurately.

Some websites that hire transcriptionists are Scribie , Transcribe Me and Rev . Expect not to make much money at the start, but you’ll increase your earning power when you learn to type faster.

15. Graphic Designer

Graphic design work is always in high demand on the internet. Whether it’s logos, posters, or other visuals, graphics are a key part of creating a brand and a marketing strategy. Web developers are front-end developers use programming languages such as HTML, CSS, and Javascript to create pages for websites. They also need to optimize website performance.

17. Web Designer

Many people offer services in both web development and web design as a package, but it’s also possible to offer them separately. If your coding knowledge is limited but you understand what a website needs and have good design skills, you could still be a web designer.

Most web designers have some technical knowledge, but if you’d prefer to avoid this you can master drag-and-drop software such as Squarespace or Wix instead. Many companies are happy with basic websites made like this as it cuts down on costs.

18. Voiceover Artist

Every audiobook, advert with a narrator, and telephone greeting was narrated using a voiceover artist; this is a huge industry. If you’ve ever been complimented for having a nice or interesting voice, you could think about giving it a go. You can choose whether to be a freelancer or to sell your services through a website set up specifically to connect voiceover artists with clients.

Some of the popular ones are BunnyStudio , Voices.com , and Voice123 .

19. Video Editing & Videography

Video is becoming an increasingly popular form of marketing and advertising, and many companies are setting up their own YouTube channels. Anyone who knows how to edit videos professionally can make money by selling this service. Popular software to use include

HitFilm Pro, or Adobe PremierePro. iMovie is available for Mac users. If you also have professional filming equipment you know how to use well, you can make even more money by becoming a videographer and offering the full video creation package.

20. Proofreading

For anyone who prides themselves on their spelling and grammar skills, proofreading could be a viable career option. Reading a text for errors might sound straightforward, but it can be hard to muster the concentration to spot small mistakes in a large piece of writing. As well as the usual freelancing sites, check JournalismJobs and MediaBistro for jobs.

21. Editing

Many people get confused between editing and proofreading; there are definitely similarities between the two, but they’re slightly different. Whilst proofreaders read through a finished piece and check there are no spelling or grammar errors, editors can also change the structure and direction of a piece.

For instance, editors could suggest cutting out an entire paragraph or restructuring sentences to create a richer narrative. However, the exact demands depend on the employers and some may demand more than others; sometimes a college degree in English is necessary.

22. Domain Selling

Having a good domain is an essential part of starting a successful online business , and many people are willing to pay a high price to have the domain they’ve set their hearts on. It’s possible to capitalize on this by buying domains for a low price that you think could be sold at a higher price later down the road. The problem is that it may take a while to be able to sell a domain you buy, so patience is key.

23. Etsy Store Owner

If you have the creativity and ability to make your own items, Etsy is a great place to go to sell them. You could sell jewelry , clothing, paintings, or anything; many people specialize in customized items or unofficial memorabilia that can’t be found anywhere else on the web. As long as you can get the raw materials for a low price and counter the costs of shipping, it’s possible to make a significant profit.

24. YouTuber

YouTube allows creators to become partners and earn ad revenue from their videos if they get a lot of views and watch time. The website is definitely past the early adapters stage; it’s becoming increasingly competitive to stand out as a new video creator.

Nonetheless, if you’re passionate about making videos and consistently putting out high-quality content then the algorithm will work in your favor eventually. Instead of relying solely on ad revenue, you can set up a Patreon account to supplement your income until you get more subscribers.

25. Podcaster

Lots of YouTubers use the audio content from their videos for podcasts too, which allows them to tap into a larger audience. You could also be a podcaster without starting a YouTube channel; certain types of content work particularly well for podcasts, such as interviews. Remember to make your content available on both Apple and Android devices, as well as Spotify, which is now optimized for podcasts.

Podcasting is relatively easy when working with a podcast host like Podbean (the one I use!) to monetize your podcast. This is because Podbean has a feature that you can sign up for free that lets them place small ads before and after your podcast.

26. Instagram Influencer

If you can grow your Instagram account to the point of having thousands of subscribers, it’s possible to monetize your account. Many brands look for Instagram influencers within their space to post adverts for their products; you could make thousands of dollars for a single post. It’s also possible to make money by including affiliate links in your posts.

But retaining the trust of your followers is important, so don’t go overboard with the adverts.

27. Social Media Management

Using social media effectively may be second nature to most Millennials and Gen Z-ers, but lots of companies struggle with maintaining active accounts. Even individuals who feel confident with using social might find it too time-consuming to actively grow their profile and outsource this job. Social media managers reply to messages, post regularly and interact with other users to grow their follower bases.

28. Social Media Consultancy

If you’re a social media whizz, you could go beyond a social media management gig and form a consultancy. Consultants are generally perceived as being credible, and starting a consultancy gives you the opportunity to expand into a business with employees rather than being a one-man show. As well as helping companies to manage their social accounts, you can give them advice on how to form a long-term social media strategy.

29. Marketing Automation

Another vital element of marketing and advertising is starting an effective email marketing strategy, which helps to retain customers and convert leads. Even if you don’t feel confident with using marketing automation software now, most services provide free resources and are reasonably straightforward to learn; once you become confident, it’s easy to position yourself as an expert.

Some of the most popular marketing automation services are Hubspot, Convertkit, and Mailchimp.

30. SEO Optimization

It’s very important for online businesses to rank highly in Google in order to receive the most page views and therefore clients, yet small businesses especially don’t realize that best practices must be implemented to rank well. Because of this, you’ll find you’re working from a blank slate, so once you learn the basics of search engine optimization you can make a huge difference in how websites perform.

31. SEO Consulting

Again, if you’re knowledgeable about SEO , you’d be better off starting an SEO consultancy rather than being a freelance search engine optimizer. This definitely brings more responsibility as companies will expect a higher standard, but if you’ve already built up experience then you should be ready.

SEO consultants help with editing metadata tags, creating a content marketing strategy, and finding the relevant keywords for a certain topic or niche.

32. Search Engine Evaluator

Search engine evaluation requires slightly more technical knowledge than website testing; you’ll need to be able to understand how search engines work. The website will give you some keywords to search for and you’ll have to be able to evaluate the results. Because the work is slightly more difficult, the pay is usually quite good. Some sites that frequently have openings for search engine evaluators are Appen, Lionbridge, and iSoftStone.

33. Course Creator

It’s possible to make a passive income from teaching by creating an online course. This requires a large time investment initially and it can be difficult to market your course, but once it’s made you can keep on earning.

Two of the most popular course creation websites are Udemy and Coursera. The former focuses on technological skills like coding (amongst other subjects), whilst the latter offers a much broader range of skills, from languages to piano playing.

34. Designer

You no longer need to be talent-spotted by a fancy company or invest in your own professional equipment to become a designer. Now you can upload your designs straight onto clothes, thanks to websites like Society6 and Cafepress .

You can upload your designs onto everything from phone cases to framed prints to T-shirts; for many people, this is more accessible than starting an Etsy shop straightaway and can act as a useful stepping stone to test market demand.

35. Online Therapist

Everyone knows that therapy is a highly-skilled and difficult profession, but not many people realize it’s moving online. If you’re a counselor, clinical psychologist or therapist that would prefer to work in their own home instead of a clinical setting or you’d just like to take on some extra gigs, you could be in luck.

Websites like BetterHelp and TalkSpace are revolutionizing the area by providing therapy appointments that take place entirely digitally by texting or video calls.

36. Test Websites

A more profitable option is to test websites rather than products. It might sound daunting if you’re not much of a technical whizz, but companies often prefer to recruit people who don’t feel as confident with technology since they represent a significant proportion of internet users. UserTesting claims you can earn up to $60 per test, whilst UTest offers $10 per test. That’s nothing to balk at.

37. Film Videos of Yourself Shopping

I know this may sound like a weird way to make money , but as long as showing your face in videos doesn’t bother you, you could make some money by signing up for Product Tube. It works similarly to survey websites except they extract consumer opinions from the videos instead. The films you have to record could include reviews in your home or the shopping experience in a supermarket.

The app claims that you can earn $50-80 worth of free gift cards per hour of effort, which is a lot more than survey websites.

38. Online Juror

To help prepare for real juries, trial versions are often run, and many of these are held online. A few of the sites you can sign up to are eJury and Online Verdict . However, there’s no guarantee you’ll get chosen, and you’ll need to be a US citizen for obvious reasons.

39. Join a Focus Group

FindFocusGroups and FocusGroup are two of the biggest websites for finding local focus groups. After registering, you’ll be invited to fill in surveys, and depending on your answers you may be invited to a focus group. Pay can be very high if you fit the right demographic, with some focus groups offering up to $100 an hour.

Make Money Offline

If you aren’t excited about using a computer all day, try out some of the best ways to make money offline:

40. Deliver Fast Food

Maybe the prospect of driving strangers around is too daunting to you, but delivering food sounds more manageable. In that case, you could join the ranks of gig economy workers who deliver food from popular restaurants, like Doordash or UberEATS .

You can choose whether you want to deliver by bicycle, motorcycle, or car, making this option more widely accessible.

Earn extra money and make your own schedule by delivering food with DoorDash.

41. Become A Grocery Shopper

Many people are physically unable or too busy to go grocery shopping for themselves and would prefer to outsource this basic task to those who have the time. If you fall into the latter category, you can become a grocery shopper on Instacart .

It might not be the most exciting job in the world, but it’s a nice and easy way to make money.

Learn more about becoming an Instacart full-service or in-store shopper today and start earning extra money.

42. Rideshare Driving

Another gig economy staple is rideshare driving with Uber. The company may be facing trouble for not securing its drivers’ rights, but if all you’re looking for is to work for a few hours a week with a flexible schedule then Uber is a good bet.

You’ll be able to choose exactly when to work and how often you work, and if you enjoy driving and talking to new people then it could be a fun job for you. You can also try out driving for Lyft and maximize your profits.

43. Photographer

The value of photos is at an all-time high in today’s society, and the good part is you can get paid to take pictures . Whether it’s an engagement, pregnancy, or marriage, many people are demanding professional photography to mark the occasion.

If you have the equipment and skills to provide this service, you could pitch yourself as a freelance photographer . When you’re starting out clients may expect you to offer your work for free, especially if you know them personally, so be prepared to stand your ground.

You can also make a side income from selling stock photography on websites like Shutterstock.

44. Flip Items from Flea Markets

If you enjoy bargain-hunting, you could make money from finding undersold items in flea markets that could be sold for a larger amount elsewhere to make a profit. You’ll need an information advantage to make money, so it’s best to focus on a particular asset class you’re knowledgeable about. Bear in mind that attending flea markets can take a lot of time and there’s no guarantee of making a profit, but if it’s something you enjoy you could make money this way.

45. Consignor

A consignor collects unwanted possessions and pays their owners when customers pay them, making a profit from the commission charged. This could be a viable option if you have friends and family with lots of unwanted possessions but no time to sell them themselves. However, it can be difficult to scale up beyond close connections as the people who consign goods to you will need to trust you.

46. Event Staffing

Event staffing is a great job for people who like to be out and about; you’ll get paid for working at events like festivals, music gigs, and fairs. SnagAJob is a good job marketplace for finding this type of work, but you’ll also be able to find more conventional job contracts in your area. If you love music, check out our list of the best ways to get paid to listen to music .

47. Find Odd Jobs on Craigslist

Some people get nervous at the prospect of using Craigslist to look for work, but it’s almost always a safe experience. People post all kinds of job adverts on Craigslist, whether that’s long-term freelance work, a conventional contract, or a one-off cleaning job. A bonus is that you don’t need to worry about the normal worries of the gig economy – like bad reviews and commission being taken – since Craigslist doesn’t operate in that way.

48. Do Chores for People

An alternative to Craigslist is TaskRabbit , but the outcome is much the same. TaskRabbit matches ‘taskers’ with people who need things to be done. The site has a heavy focus on DIY and manual labor tasks, such as mounting a TV or assembling a desk – but there are also more basic jobs such as cleaning. You’ll set your rate and schedule, then people can book your services through the app.

49. Interior Design Consulting

Many people think they’re a dab hand at designing their own homes – are you confident enough in your abilities to offer your services to others too? It can be difficult to get started at interior design consulting since it’s heavily testimonial-based, but you could start by helping your friends out and hope for referrals.

50. Wedding Planning

Wedding planning is one of those jobs plenty of people dream of and others would find horrendous. Do you fit into the first category? It might not be as difficult as you think to make your dream a reality. Wedding planning doesn’t require any kind of official qualification and success mostly comes down to experience – so, if you’ve planned your own wedding, you already have experience. Leverage your network by letting past guests know you’re planning on starting your own business (assuming your wedding was reasonably recent), and see if anybody takes you up on the offer.

51. Be a Trainer for a Specific Sport

We all know that personal trainers are in high demand, but unless you’re a ripped gym bunny, it’s probably not a career option you’ve considered yourself. Yet sports coaching isn’t limited to this kind of standard fitness training; you could also coach for other sports, like golf or hockey. You might be more qualified than you realize if you’ve been playing a sport since your childhood, and there’s a big market for improving sport amongst children and their parents.

52. Event DJ

Not many people have a full DJ set lying around in the house, never mind know how to use one; if you’re one of the few that can tick both of those boxes, you probably already get regularly asked to DJ for parties free of charge. With just a touch of extra confidence, you could take that to the next level by charging for your services. You could start small with local weddings then build up to club nights or other big events.

53. Clinical Trials

Taking part in a clinical trial might not sound very appealing, but it’s certainly profitable – you can earn thousands of dollars for a few weeks for doing nothing at all. There’s not as much risk as you might think since, once a product reaches the clinical trial stage, it’s already passed multiple tests and is unlikely to be dangerous. But don’t just go in blindly: make sure you do your research about what the medicine being tested is. ClinicalTrials.gov has a database of thousands of trials; once you register your interest, you’ll need to attend a screening to ensure you’re a healthy candidate.

54. Become a Mystery Shopper

Mystery shoppers go to stores with a ‘secret mission’ to extract data whilst posing as normal shoppers. For example, they might go to a car dealer and take a test drive under the guise of wanting to purchase a car, when in reality they’re collecting information about the sales process. Pretending to buy goods might sound easy enough, but it can be uncomfortable; mystery shoppers are often asked to pose as difficult customers to see how customer service staff react.

Make Money from Home

If you want to stay at home and work online (majority of the online jobs listed you can do from home) or offline, here are some of the best ways to make money from home :

55. Store Peoples Stuff

You have space in your home or garage that sits empty, why not make some money from it ? It can be the size of a closet or a spare room or an outdoor shed. Fortunately there is a service that makes this very easy. In New York City, they estimate a spare basement rental to generate almost $10,000 per year!

Neighbor’s Host Guarantee protects you up to $1,000,000 for personal liability and renter’s are eligible for up to $25,000 in case items are damaged during storage.

List your space, set your terms, then start earning easy cash by converting unused space into money-making revenue streams.

Making money from Airbnb was one of the original gig economy businesses and helped to change the way we view the things we own when we’re not using them. Not everyone is brave enough to rent out their whole house to a stranger, but even renting out the spare room can provide a big source of extra income. You might meet some interesting people and end up enjoying it.

57. Dog Walking

Getting paid to walk dogs might sound like a dream come true for a lot of people, but it’s possible to make some money by doing it. Many dog owners don’t always have the time to walk their own dogs, or they may need some extra help whilst they go on holiday. Rover is an app that lets you set your prices and offer additional services like doggy daycare, house sitting, and boarding.

58. Babysit

Babysitting is a classic job for teenagers to bring in a little extra pocket money, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it too. Even if you don’t have any friends or family with children you can babysit for, the gig economy is here to bring you together with people who need babysitters. Care.com is a website offering this.

Care.com logo

Care.com offers you the ability to list your services as a care giver, or to list your needs for a caregiver and review background checks.

59. Dropshipping

Dropshipping allows you to sell goods without ever having to hold a physical inventory of your products. A third party like Shopify will store and deliver the stock for you at the price of taking a commission. Your role is to list the items on your website at a price large enough for you to be able to make a profit after commission.

60. Bookkeeper

If you’re organized and good with numbers, you could consider taking up bookkeeping. It’s a service all businesses need when it comes to filing for taxes, and many small businesses or ‘solopreneurs’ need to outsource the service. The most successful freelance bookkeepers are those that have a history in the industry before freelancing as they already have a client base built up, but if you have a professional network from a different career you could leverage it to start budgeting.

61. Researcher

You might think that carrying out research using the internet is a basic skill, but it can be time-consuming so many companies prefer to outsource their research instead. Wonder hires individuals who can complete research assignments for clients and pays them by the hour. To get approved, you must pass a reading comprehension test and then complete a practice assignment successfully. You’ll receive $50 for completing their training as well as money from future assignments.

62. Translation

In a globalized world, many businesses are looking to reach people from different regions who speak different languages. If you’re bilingual or even multilingual, you can use your language skills to help companies translate their content. The general recommendation is to only translate from your second language(s) into your native tongue, so it’s often more profitable to translate from another language into English than vice versa.

If you like the idea of teaching but you’d prefer to focus on another subject, you could become a tutor instead. The better your academic credentials the higher the rate you’ll be able to charge, but anyone with an academic background can become a tutor. Chegg facilitates online tutoring in a variety of subjects via video call, with a similar format to the English teaching websites. Studypool focuses on homework help: students post questions they need help with and offer a price for the answer, which will vary depending on time and difficulty. All help is submitted via written answers. Qualified teachers can take online gigs using GigEd.

64. Daycare Business

When it comes to deciding whether to be a stay-at-home parent or to find a job, many people decide that the cost of daycare is larger than their salary, so it’s best to stay at home. But why not have the best of both worlds by making money from looking after other people’s children whilst you stay at home with your own. If you feel unsure about how to start a daycare business, you can take this course to learn more.

65. Laundry Business

Another business anyone can easily do from home is laundry; assuming you clean your own clothes, you already have the facilities so there’s no extra expense. It might not appeal to you if you can barely stand to do your own laundry, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a more convenient business idea – you could even charge extra for ironing the clothes. By using the Laundry Care app, you’ll be matched with potential clients in the local area without any work on your behalf.

66. Baby Equipment Rental

If you have children and their old baby gear is still lying around the house, you could make an extra buck from renting it out to local tourists. Babyquip is a website that connects holidaymakers who have children with locals who can supply them with the equipment they need. The only drawback is that you need to live in a popular tourist destination to attract any customers.

67. Rent Out Your Car

Most of us only use our car when we need to drive somewhere, and the rest of the time it gets left on the driveway. You can rent out your house on Airbnb – why not rent out your car when you’re not using it too? GetAround allows you to do just that; you can choose your own rate and you’ll be covered with liability insurance, so there’s no risk involved.

68. Rent Your Parking Spot

Whilst you’re at it, you can rent out your parking spot too; this can be quite lucrative if you live in a busy area. Try making a listing on Craigslist and see if anyone takes you up on the offer. However, you’ll need to check the terms of your rental agreement or homeowners association first to check you’re not breaking any rules.

69. Rent Out Belongings

It’s not just your house, your car, and your baby equipment you can rent out on the gig economy – you can rent out anything that you want if you can find a customer. Fat Llama lets you list any belongings, but the focus is on specialist equipment like DSLR cameras or DJ sets. You’ll also get comprehensive insurance included, so you don’t have to worry about your belongings being robbed.

70. Life Coaching

The life coach industry seems to be exploding recently, and the earning potential can be huge. Since life coaching isn’t a traditional career path, there’s no established route to take or rate to charge – the only limitation is that you’ll need a certificate to register. Since ‘life coaching’ is such a vague term, it can be helpful to choose a particular niche to specialize in, such as relationships or health. Some of these niches are separate coaching roles in their own right.

71. Career Coaching

If you’ve done well in your own career, why not coach others about how to do the same? Many people are starting to understand the importance of investing in themselves to see bigger returns in the future by unleashing their potential, and one of the most popular ways to do this is by hiring a career coach. Tasks involve helping clients to prepare for interviews, checking resumes, and offering general guidance about career direction. The further you climbed the ladder in your own career, the more you’ll be able to charge for your services.

72. Business Coaching

Similarly, if you’ve achieved previous success in the world of entrepreneurialism, your services could be of use to budding entrepreneurs or even established entrepreneurs who want to take their company to the next level. Business coaching is particularly high-stakes; someone is paying you to give them advice, and if your advice goes wrong it could have potentially disastrous consequences. However, if you ‘re confident enough in your abilities for that not to bother you, give it a go.

73. Meal Planning

You don’t need to be a nutritionist or dietician to be able to plan meals – although it would definitely help! Lots of people who are too busy with work to cook simply need some creativity and inspiration to know what to cook, so if that’s something you’re good at you might be able to help others more than you realize.

74. Sell Gift Cards You Won’t Use

We all get gift cards for birthdays, Christmas or prize draws, but they’re not always from our shop of choice. Instead of letting them sit in your wallet until they reach their expiration date, why not cash in? Raise is a marketplace for buying and selling gift cards, usually at discounted prices. The full price would be nice, but something is better than nothing.

75. Open Up Your Mailbox

There are lots of ways to make money if you’re prepared to let third parties access your personal data. One of them is Small Business Knowledge (SBK) Center , a market research company that will pay you to have a peek into your email mailbox. If you sign up, expect to receive a payment of up to $20 every 6-10 weeks.

Embarking on the journey to make money online can be as exciting as it is lucrative.

With the digital world at your fingertips, countless opportunities await to turn your skills, hobbies, or even your unused internet connection into a steady income stream.

Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent, a student, or just looking to supplement your income, this guide is your starting point. Get ready to explore over 50 legitimate and diverse ways to earn money online, all from the comfort of your home.

How to Make Money Online

Most digital side hustles have a realistic income ceiling and expected time commitment. Choose the ones that best align with your lifestyle needs.

1. Participate in market research

branded surveys is a leading market research companies that offers paid online surveys

Online surveys won’t net you a hefty income, but you can earn a few dollars here and there. Many survey sites pay in gift cards, but some, like Branded Surveys , allow you to cash out your earnings via PayPal or direct deposit. By consistently taking surveys and earning points, you’ll become a Branded Elite member and qualify for additional bonus points and rewards.

We’ve ranked dozens of paid survey sites , many of which are scams purporting to represent legitimate entities, so be careful when handing out personal information to a brand you haven’t heard much about.

2. Sell old phones or technology

I used to have a habit of holding on to all my old laptops and cell phones, even after I upgraded to a newer model. That changed when I discovered Decluttr and sites like it where you can sell your old electronics.

I recently got $24 for trading in an old Samsung Galaxy S7 that I had previously bought from the company. Decluttr gives you an instant quote and offers a highest-price guarantee. If you find a better deal on another site, send in your quote and they’ll match it, no questions asked.

3. Earn cashback and rewards online

Cashback apps and browser extensions help you save money on everything from groceries to books. You won’t earn a fortune, but if you do a good bit of online shopping, the savings can really add up.

For example, I’m able to automatically claw back an easy $10 to $20 each month with the free DollarSprout Rewards browser extension. It gets me cash back at my favorite stores like Overstock, Walgreens, and Walmart, and it also scours the web for promo codes and coupons for additional savings at checkout.

dollarsprout rewards cash back notification

Once you have the browser extension installed, DollarSprout Rewards lets you know if there’s a deal available for any one of 15,000+ different retailer websites. One simple click activates the cash back offer and there’s no “catch” for using it. If your earnings balance exceeds $5 at any point during a particular month, you’ll automatically receive a cash payout to PayPal the following month.

Just simple, completely free cash back in your pocket.

4. Sell your unused internet connection

It sounds weird, but hear me out: companies like Honeygain will literally buy your bits of unused data and internet resources so they can power their Content Delivery services for the partner Fortune 500 companies they work with. Your computer becomes part of a larger “hive” of computers and internet connections that help power the network.

By installing the app on two devices and sharing about 5 GB per day, Honeygain estimates the average user will earn $45 per month in passive income .

If you have an unlimited data mobile plan, cable, fiber, or DSL, odds are you’ll have some extra bandwidth to donate. Better yet, new users also get a free $3 gift when they register online. Check out their website to learn more.

5. Start a blog

examples of how much bloggers make

Making money by starting a blog is more realistic than you may think. Bloggers make money by advertising for companies they’re affiliated with. When users click an affiliate link and make a purchase, the website owner earns a commission. There are other ways to make money blogging such as by displaying advertising, selling your own products, or writing sponsored content.

Blogging platforms such as HostGator provide a simple, affordable way to start your own digital business from home for less than the cost of a cup of coffee each month. (It’s the same way we built DollarSprout into a seven-figure brand.)

6. Monetize your location data

tapestri app pays you for anonymous location data

Ever received one of those push notifications from Starbucks asking if you want a drink if you’re within a stone’s throw of a physical location? Recall apps on your phone asking for permission if they can use your location data?

Odds are you have over a dozen apps on your phone currently tracking every step you’ve ever made. Now it’s time to monetize it.

With Tapestri , users can earn up to $25 per month simply by turning on their location sharing.

Tapestri then partners with massive brands to help them gain insight into consumer behavior and shopping patterns. The location data is completely anonymous, and as we mentioned earlier, you’re already sharing it with a number of other apps — at least with Tapestri, you’ll get paid for it.

7. Become a proofreader

Proofreaders help authors, bloggers, and even court reporters ensure that their content is grammatically correct and error-free. A proofreader’s role is to be an extra set of eyes after the author and editor have finished their job. They scour content for any errors that may have previously been missed. With a modest list of clients, a freelance proofreader can reasonably expect to earn several hundred to even several thousand dollars per month working in their spare time.

Tori Gellino, a DollarSprout reader and avid side hustler, earns an average of $1,200 per month moonlighting as a virtual proofreader. She recently shared her best tips for finding a stable of 5 to 10 reliable clients and the training she completed before bringing them on board.

Ready to start?  Caitlin Pyle offers a free webinar and training course — Proofread Anywhere — for people interested in starting a freelance proofreading business from home.

proofread anywhere is a paid proofreading course that teaches people how to become an online proofreader and find paid clients

8. Start a dropshipping business

Dropshipping businesses have become an extremely popular way to make money online over the last decade. Dropshippers source products from manufacturers, then sell the product through their online store. When a customer places an order, the item is shipped from the manufacturer directly to the customer’s home. You never have to store inventory or manage orders. Shopify, one of the most well-known eCommerce platforms online, offers a free 45-minute workshop on how to start and launch a dropshipping business.

9. Manage Facebook Ads for businesses

One of the ways Facebook makes money is by allowing companies to advertise its products and services in users’ news feeds. Most small business owners don’t realize the value of running Facebook ads for their business. By learning to communicate the value of ads in reaching new clientele and building brand awareness, you can earn $1,000 to $2,000 per month for each client you book.

Start by reaching out to small business owners in your area or by taking an online course that teaches you how to manage ads on Facebook and start booking clients .

10. Work as a virtual assistant

A virtual assistant is an all-encompassing title for someone who offers online services for companies and small businesses. Services can range from graphic design, to blog management, to email marketing.

A good friend of mine started working as a virtual assistant once she had her first child. She makes $35 an hour offering copywriting and email management to local companies. Working as a freelancer will increase your hourly rate but comes with the downside of having to find your own work. Another option is to work with well-known virtual assistant companies that have a steady stream of clients, but at a lower hourly rate.

11. Transcribe audio files

The most common transcription jobs fall into three categories: legal, medical, and general. Companies in the medical or legal realms may require that you have some knowledge or experience in the respective field. As a transcriptionist, you’ll listen to audio files and transcribe them into written content. Pay varies depending on the industry and your level of experience. If you’re interested in transcription, here’s a free 7-day course that includes more details about what it takes to work as a transcriptionist and how to get started.

12. Bank hop

“Bank hopping” is one of the more savvy ways to make money online, but it often requires a little bit of capital to work with. The gist of it is pretty simple: banks offer sizeable deposit bonuses if you open an account — often with a minimum deposit — and hold the money within the institution for a certain period of time, often around 90 days.

For example, Citi Bank is currently offering up to $2000 in bonuses for opening a new Citigold account and keeping your money there for just 60 days (then rinse and repeat at a new institution). A tiered bonus, you’ll earn $200 for deposits between $10,000 and $29,999, and $2000 if you deposit $300,000 or more.

Not everyone has that kind of cash on hand, but if you do, and it’s earning .06% at your traditional brick-and-mortar, this is an easy way to earn a sizeable chunk of free money .

13. Complete micro tasks

Micro tasks are one of the easiest ways to make money online. But micro jobs come with micro pay. You can earn a few dollars a month with Swagbucks by watching videos, playing games, and using the Swagbucks search engine. Other micro job sites pay users for reviewing content, verifying data, or testing apps and websites.

14. Invest in fine art

masterworks art investing performance vs s&p 500

When people think of investing, they imagine the usual: stocks, bonds, real estate, etc. But you can also invest in physical items, such as fine art. Up until now, it wasn’t possible for most ordinary people to buy famous and original works of art from artists like Picasso, Monet, or Rembrandt.

Masterworks is a company that makes it possible to buy “shares” in a painting, just as you would buy shares of stock. It’s a good way to make money online if you know your art and don’t need the money right away.

15. Teach English as a second language

Having been a VIPKid teacher myself, I can honestly say it’s a legit way to make money online. VIPKid hires native English speakers to teach English to children, most of whom are based in China. Your pay is based on your level of teaching experience and how well you do in the demo interview. When I worked for the company I had zero experience and regularly made $1,500 to $2,000 per month teaching part-time.

16. Host a digital course

Digital courses are one of the top ways to make money online today. Outschool is a teacher-recruiting platform specifically designed to help online course creators monetize their knowledge. Its classes range from architecture to yoga to learning about Pokémon characters. According to the site, the average teacher earns $40 per hour, and you don’t need experience teaching to use Outschool .

17. Sell your unused gift cards

make money online by selling unwanted gift cards for cash

If you have gift cards lying around that you don’t want, you can sell them one of several popular gift card exchanges . When you enter your gift card on a site like Raise , they’ll give you a suggested selling point. You can change this to set the price at whatever you believe is fair. It’s free to list your gift card on Raise, but once it sells, the site will keep 15% of the selling price and you’ll receive the remaining 85%. For example, if you list a gift card with a $50 balance for sale at $45, Raise will keep $6.75 and you’ll receive $38.25.

18. Buy and sell domain names

Ever since I started my own website in 2016, I’ve purchased domain names whenever I think of one that could be worth something. Recently, I sold one of them on GoDaddy for $1,200 — a domain I originally purchased for $12. If you have a penchant for thinking of unique names for websites or businesses, domain flipping could potentially be a lucrative way to make money online. Here’s a great how-to guide by GoDaddy that shares tips for flipping an inexpensive domain for thousands.

19. Become a private tutor

With the variety of online tutoring sites available, you can earn money online by teaching anything you know. Some sites dictate the amount you can charge while others allow you to set your own rate. You can start booking clients by creating profiles on sites like Wyzant or Tutor.com. Depending on your subject area and whether you prefer to teach in person or online, you could also advertise on Craigslist or at local schools.

20. Get paid to test websites

Website testers give their opinions on a website’s design and user experience. This allows companies to make changes to their websites in order to provide a better experience for their users (and hopefully increase sales). With sites like UserTesting, you can earn $10 for every 15- to 20-minute test you complete. Tests involve recording your screen with feedback and answering follow-up questions. Check out other places you can get paid to test websites .

21. Write for websites and business owners

Writing is one of the fastest and most accessible ways to make money online. You don’t need perfect grammar skills or a padded portfolio to become a freelance writer . You can use personal blog posts, newsletters, or stories you’ve written in the past as samples of your work. Join the ProBlogger and Freelance Writing job boards to start pitching your services to clients.

22. Pick up freelance work

I’ve earned thousands in extra income over the last three years as a freelance writer, web developer, and, most recently, project manager. The fastest way to sell your services online is to offer what you already know. If your day job involves managing social media, or if you learned to edit podcasts from working on your own personal podcast, those are legitimate services you can offer to clients. Sites like Fiverr, Upwork, and Freelancer.com offer a network of professionals looking for freelancers with your skillset.

23. Flip Facebook Marketplace finds

I love following furniture-flipping accounts on Instagram, like Whitney Hansen’s Unsophisticated DIY. The main thing I’ve learned from these accounts: not all flips require significant work. If you can find good enough deals, you can purchase a piece, then turn around and sell it for profit within a week. Apart from furniture, keep an eye out for other flippable items you can sell like clothing with tags, antiques, and vintage collectible items like baseball cards or gaming systems. Professional flippers like Rob and Melissa of Flea Market Flipper — who make over $100,000 per year flipping yard sale hauls — have a flipping course that teaches people how to extract the most value out of high-margin items they find.

24. Sell what you make on Etsy

Etsy, one of the more popular money-making websites in the world, is known for its variety of handmade and vintage items. Alternatively, users have seen success selling everything from handmade knitwear and upcycled jewelry to budget printables and home organization binders. Whatever your talent is, there’s a chance that you can sell your crafts digitally and earn some extra income.

25. Create YouTube content

YouTubers primarily earn money through ads, which average $0.01 to $0.03 per view, or $3 to $5 per 1000 video views. If you create consistent, engaging content and build a following, you can make money on YouTube with Google AdSense. It’s free to start a creator account, but you must meet YouTube’s minimum requirements before you can monetize your videos.

26. Sell your gently-used clothing

Average spending on new clothes in US

Another of the easiest ways to make money online is by selling things you no longer use. If your clothes are designer and in high demand, you may earn more by listing them individually on Poshmark or eBay. On the other hand, if your items aren’t in as high demand or you don’t want to deal with the hassle of selling them yourself, you can order a Clean Out Kit from thredUP. Pack the bag, and collect your earnings when they sell. For a local alternative, try Plato’s Closet or Buffalo. (From my experience, however, you won’t earn as much as selling your clothes online .)

27. Work as a matchmaker

make money online by becoming a relationship matchmaker

Tawkify matches online love-seekers based on shared values, interests, and other dating preferences. As a matchmaker, you’ll work one-on-one with clients and line up their next date with handpicked matches based on these factors. You don’t need experience in the field to apply. According to its website, some of the qualities Tawkify looks for in matchmakers include empathy, intuition, and high EQ.

28. Teach business owners how to use Asana

Many small and large businesses alike have trouble organizing and managing projects and teams, which is where project management software like Asana can help. As an Asana consultant, you’ll help business owners set up their teams, streamline and optimize projects, and train them on Asana best practices. After your first year of consulting with businesses, you can apply to become an Asana Certified Pro. Certification comes with in-depth training, and you’ll be featured on Asana’s Certified Pros page to make it easier for clients in your area to find and work with you.

29. Create an app

You don’t need to be a software engineer or developer to create an app. If you have a great idea, find someone on Freelancer, Upwork, or Fiverr with the technical skills who can help you bring it to life. You can also use a platform like Build Fire or Appy Pie to create your app with no coding skills needed. Once your app is live, you can make money by displaying in-app advertisements, offering a premium version, or selling your app to a larger company.

30. Start a paid membership community

I’m a member of several paid membership communities — some in life coaching and personal development and others related to online business. Membership sites can be a great way to share your knowledge, build a community, and create recurring revenue. A membership typically includes some form of core content, such as a course. The ones I’m a member of also release weekly or monthly content, including live coaching calls where members can volunteer to be coached in front of the community. For more information, check out this in-depth guide on how to create a paid membership site .

31. Sell your personal photos

If you enjoy taking pictures or have images on your camera roll that you’re not using, you can make money by selling them online. You only need a smartphone camera to get started. Some apps will pay you for your selfies while other sites, like Shutterstock and Adobe Stock, pay for stock photography they can sell to business owners. Learn more about how to get paid for your pictures .

32. Offer virtual interior design consults

One of my favorite Instagram accounts to follow is Galey Alix. Galey documents her interior design projects — a business she started and runs on the side of her full-time finance job. Her successful business is proof that you don’t need a degree or experience to start a business or offer services in a new area.

Start by working with friends and family for free. Document your work online and on social media, and collect testimonials. Once you have some experience and a feel for your process, you can create service packages and sell them to new clients.

33. Self-publish an eBook

Self-publishing has become popular among new authors. If you already have a blog or personal website, you can use it to sell your book. The most common method seems to be self-publishing through Amazon with Kindle Direct Publishing. Once you’ve written and formatted your book, you can upload it directly to your Amazon KDP account. Learn more about how to publish and sell an eBook .

34. Become a voice-over artist

Voice-over artists provide their voice for professional audio work such as games, commercials, and cartoons. If you have a voice for radio, this could be an easy way to make money online. You can find voice-over work on freelance sites like Fiverr or niche sites such as Voices.com.

35. Sell digital products

If you don’t have the time or just don’t prefer to work with clients, selling digital products offers another way to make money online with your know-how. There are many types of digital products you can create and sell, such as planners, templates, or workbooks. You can drive people to your digital products through Pinterest, social media, or creating content such as blog posts that rank in search engine results.

36. Sell your home-grown produce

A friend of mine recently fulfilled a decades-long dream of owning chickens. According to his calculations, his 20 chickens should provide 15 or so eggs per day. When I asked what he planned to do with all the extras, he said, “Hadn’t thought of that. I guess I’ll sell them.” His new hobby became an unexpected side hustle. If you love to garden or grow your own produce, consider selling the excess to friends and family or on sites like Facebook Marketplace.

37. Work for a call center

A call center agent is one of the best online jobs for people who work in customer service. U-Haul, Apple, and American Express are a few companies that offer remote work in this field. This role can either be full-time or part-time depending on the company, and training is typically provided, which means no previous experience is required.

38. Apply to work as a data entry specialist

Data entry includes inputting hard-copy information into a spreadsheet or scanning documents into an online program. It doesn’t require a specialized degree and pays upwards of $13 per hour depending on your level of experience, which makes data entry an easy way to make money online or from home in your spare time. Sites like FlexJobs and Microworkers offer data entry jobs for all skill levels.

39. Design and sell T-shirts

If you’re creative or can come up with catchy sayings, you can make money online designing and selling your own T-shirts. Sites like Teespring, Bonfire, and Printify allow you to design and sell custom shirts without paying anything upfront or holding inventory. Similar to dropshipping, you create your own storefront that includes your personal designs. When a customer places an order, the site creates the product and ships it on your behalf. You’ll still need to promote your storefront to make money online with this idea, so it’s helpful to have an online following, whether it’s on Instagram, YouTube, or another social media platform.

40. Offer consulting services

Consulting has an inherently corporate connotation. However, anyone with deep knowledge in a particular subject area could make money as a virtual consultant . Unlike freelancers, a consultant’s work is less hands-on. Rather than doing the work yourself, you provide clients with the expertise that allows them to take informed action. If you’re an expert in search engine optimization, for example, you may consult with clients to create an SEO strategy, then teach their employees how to implement the changes.

41. Coach in your area of expertise

Where consultants provide a plan of execution for clients, coaches help clients create a plan for themselves. When I started my financial coaching business, I thought I would mostly tell people what to do with their money and then they would do it. But I quickly realized that what my clients needed most was help overcoming limiting money beliefs and staying accountable to their own goals and plans. You can become a coach in any area from Instagram marketing to personal finances and business. Tools like Acuity and Zoom can help you book and meet with clients virtually.

42. Start a new online business

Take notice of the things you hear others complain about or problems you face yourself. Is there a way to turn the solution into an online business? Or if you already offer an in-person service, is there a way you can take your in-person business online ? For example, a massage therapist could host online classes teaching couples how to give each other a massage. A baker could host an online workshop about how to make their most popular recipes. There are thousands of online business ideas outside of the ones listed here.

Real Ways to Make Money from Home Offline

Not all work-from-home jobs are tied to an internet connection. The following guides and resources can help you learn more about these real ways to make money from home for free.

43. Sign up for a food delivery service

While this isn’t technically a way to make money from home, delivering food or packages is an easy way to earn extra income outside of a day job. Instacart shoppers typically earn between $10 and $20 per hour. As long as you have consistent access to a vehicle, you can make deliveries on your own time and start earning as soon as you’re approved. Shoppers also get comped memberships to Costco, BJs, and several other wholesale retailers (in addition to tons of free fuel points)!

Note: Since average hourly earnings fluctuate based on factors including location and demand, we have not included rates. However, our research suggests average rates tend to fall between $10-$20 per hour.

44. Pet sit at your house

I recently started pet sitting using the Rover app as a way to make money from home. The company allows you to set your own rates, schedule, and choose the services you offer. Since I work remotely, I chose in-house doggy daycare and set my rate at $33 per dog per day. Moose was my first client. For two days of having him over, I earned $52.80. (Rover takes a 20% cut.) I was pleased given that my dog did most of the work entertaining Moose and I got the reward. Other services you can offer on Rover include dog walking, boarding, in-house visits, and house sitting. Learn more about what it’s like to dog sit with Rover .

45. Rent out your space

If you have space in your house that you’re not using, renting it out is one of the best ways to make money from home. There are many ways to rent out your space . Websites like Neighbor.com and StoreAtMyHouse are built for storing items, while ShareMySpace and PeerSpace are geared toward events like meetings, photoshoots, and parties.

46. Offer at-home daycare

At-home daycare offers a fun way to make money at home if you love working with children and have the time to dedicate to caring for several at once. Many parents prefer private daycares to public ones. If you have experience working with kids or a network of parents who trust you, this is one of the great side hustles for moms or dads who work remotely or stay home with their own kids during the day.

47. Work as a mystery shopper

Companies like Secret Shopper, BestMark, and IntelliShop pay workers to provide feedback on a company’s products or services. For example, you might be asked to visit a local electronics store, ask someone in the phone department-specific questions, and complete a survey about your experience. You can complete applications with mystery shopping companies to start booking gigs online or in your area.

48. Sell your favorite recipes

If friends and family rave over your cooking, even a single dish, you can capitalize on your talent to make money at home. That’s what Nikki Girard did. What began as trying to perfect her Haitian patty recipe turned into a part-time side business that brings in $2,000 per month . You can use social media and your personal network to sell your creations. Some states have Cottage Food laws on how much you can sell without requiring a license, so be sure to research this for your area.

49. Fix broken gadgets for neighbors

A few weeks ago my lawnmower broke down and I wasn’t sure where to take it. When I told my next-door neighbor, he offered to fix it for me. It turns out he has a side gig repairing broken lawn mowers for locals. If you have a similar skillset or general handyman knowledge, this may be an easy way to make money from home. Call around to neighbors who might use your services and mention your offering in conversations with friends and family. Word of mouth can be a powerful marketing tool, but apps like TaskRabbit and Amazon Home Services can also help spread the word.

50. Let companies advertise on your phone

Advertisements allow companies a way to reach a new clientele. More brand exposure typically means more revenue, which means you can make money from home by allowing companies to use your belongings as a billboard. Sites like Wrapify and Carvertise pay to place ads on your car while Slidejoy and similar apps pay to rent ad space on your phone’s lock screen. Learn more about how to get paid to advertise for companies and brands .

51. Do bookkeeping for local businesses

As a bookkeeper, you’ll be responsible for things like inputting company transactions, reconciling bank records, invoicing customers, and running financial reports. You don’t need a degree in finance or accounting to make money from home as a bookkeeper. However, you will need to know how to use Quickbooks or other popular accounting software, and you’ll need a basic understanding of accounting principles. Any bookkeeping classes or certifications you complete can justify a bump in your rates.

52. Teach fitness classes

You can teach yoga and fitness classes in your garage gym, spare bedroom, or even your living room. This is an easy way to make money from home if you already have a teaching certification. If you don’t, ACE Fitness offers group fitness certification training starting at $350. Being certified isn’t a requirement, but it can give you a competitive edge in marketing your classes and help your clients feel more confident in your services.

53. Negotiate a remote work agreement with your current employer

If you have a job you love but want the flexibility of working remotely, consider bringing it up with your employer. Depending on your role, you may only be able to work out a part-time remote agreement that leaves you with some days in-office and others at home. Before you initiate the conversation, be prepared to communicate your reasoning and think of any questions or problems your boss may have ahead of time. Having solutions prepared will increase your odds of coming to a mutually beneficial agreement.

Make a Plan for Your Extra Money Ahead of Time

Making extra money online or from home is great. But if your reason for doing so is to get out of a tough financial predicament, you’ll end up in the same place if you don’t create a plan for your money before it comes in. Making a monthly budget or spending plan can help.

Write down your consistent income streams: full-time salary, child support, etc. — any income that stays the same from month to month. Then include your side hustle income as a separate item. Write in less than you think you can make so that you don’t end up going over budget if you make less. Once you have your income, decide how much to save, invest, put toward debt, and then what’s left over to spend until each dollar is accounted for.

They say you manage what you measure. If you’re going to use your spare time to make extra money online, tracking where that money goes will ensure the effort is worth the reward.

Sell Your Skills Online

Fiverr is a funny, high-energy website where you may make some quick cash with the right idea. Would you pay $5 to have someone promote your business in a leprechaun suit, sing happy birthday from a tropical beach, make a video rant, or overreact?

From real value to sheer craziness, people are making money selling their skills online. What skill could you sell for $5?

Rent Your Gadgets

Instead of letting that food processor, electric drill, or extra iPhone sit around collecting dust, put them to work. You can send your gadgets and gizmos out into the world to make money for you through websites like FatLlama .

You can even make money by connecting people who need something with people who have it.

Become a Local Guide

Take your unique perceptions, combine them with your knowledge of your community, and earn money as a local guide.

Make your tour thematic like distinctive coffee shops in the area, showcase the neighborhood with a “best of” tour, or dig deep to find the hidden gems no one would know to look for but you. Whatever you do, have fun with it!

Advertise your tours in your local paper or join Local Facebook pages about the area you want to be a guide in.

Rent Your Parking Space

Maybe you have a two-car garage with only one car, a side driveway, or an empty parking pad. Turn dead space into ongoing income through sites like Spot Hero .

You list your parking space for free with the site and they take care of the rest. When your space rents, they keep a small percentage of your rental fee and send you the rest. Search for this innovative idea in your country.

Look for National Parks Gigs

You can help people gain an appreciation for the environment with this outdoors opportunity. National parks provide visitors with guides and other helpers during their stays.

You can check out nearby opportunities on sites like Older and Bolder (US) or similar prospects in your country. Teach the next generation to honor the earth, while you commune with nature.

Contracts are usually six months to a year. Humanity is waiting for you.

Did you know you can make money from renting out your assets? Websites like Getaround and TURO make it easy.

Why pay to park your car at the airport the next time you jet off somewhere? Instead, Getaround will rent out your car, clean it, and take care of it. They have a one million dollar insurance policy too. TURO lets you do peer-to-peer car sharing by the hour or by the day.

Get Paid for Online Surveys

Cash Crate is a great paid surveys site. Trying new free products and services, taking consumer research surveys, and referring others can pay you. You can also earn money back on your own online purchases and win prizes for socializing and playing games. (What?!)

But that’s not why we love it. We love it because of the community and transparency. Cash Crate has an active forum where their two million members exchange tips and ideas.

Write Songs Online

Classical musicians take note. (Pun intended.) If you’re a classically trained musician who’s relegated your talents to entertaining a small circle of friends, it’s time you breathe new life into your work. Create something magical and license it online.

ROVER is a cool site that brings doggie parents together with dog lovers who’ll watch their furry babies while they’re on vacation. If you’re a dog lover, this is the perfect way to earn money and enjoy the companionship dogs offer too.

Try On-Demand Ride-Sharing

New websites that promote collaborative consumption are popping up all across the web. Lyft is one website that connects car owners with people who need rides.

By using your smartphone and your car, you can earn money by giving rides to people in your area. When a request for a ride comes in, you can choose to accept it or not.

Look for Expat Jobs

Here’s an adventurous notion; work overseas as an expat. If you really want to shake up your life, do a Google search for “jobs for expats” and prepare to be amazed.

You can find opportunities near you by watching entertainment news, checking websites like Craigslist for casting calls, or registering for free with a casting agency. Who knows? It could be your calling (pun intended).

Get into Freelance Teaching

Don’t just babysit; make a difference. Choose one or more skills that would be valuable to children, like learning philanthropy, environmental stewardship, money management, yoga, art, computers, or lifetime fitness. The list is endless, really.

Offer after school paid classes. Kids learn valuable life skills, parents know their kids are someplace safe and enriching, and you earn money. Check out Learning to Give for ideas.

11 Insanely Easy Ways to Save Money in 2022

Taylor Schulte

Table of Contents

Today I’m sharing simple tips for how to save money in 2022.

Because saving more money provides freedom , flexibility , and security .

Saving money also allows you to leave a financial legacy for your loved ones.

So if you want to learn 11 insanely easy ways to save more money this year (and beyond!), you’re going to love this article.

First, grab these free resources to help you save more money:

Saving Money: A Challenge Across All Income Levels

Saving money is more important than ever in 2022.

In fact, while personal savings rates continue to increase, the average savings rate has been declining since 2010 ( Deloitte ).

The concept of saving money seems simple:

Spend less than you earn. Save and invest the difference.

So why do most retirement savers struggle to save?

Put simply, there are three main factors that make it hard to save money:

  • Bad Habits. Our money habits and behaviors begin forming around age 7. Since financial education is severely lacking in America, most people find themselves with bad habits as adults.
  • Lack of Prioritization. Learning how to change bad money habits isn’t typically at the top of the list. As one research study concluded, “financial planning is like a mix between a dental visit, math class, and marriage therapy.”
  • You Only Live Once (YOLO). This modern acronym suggests that one should enjoy the present without worrying about the future. Some have argued that this increasingly popular philosophy has convinced a new generation to spend more and save less.

Today’s article will not magically change your money habits or make finance more fun.

However, it will show you what’s possible and (hopefully) inspire you to dedicate the rest of the year to improving your money-saving journey.

11 Simple Tips for How to Save Money in 2022

While not all of these strategies will apply to you, implementing just a few could save you thousands of dollars per year.

1. Ask For a Discount

I can hear my grandmother now:

“If you don’t ask, you’ll never know!”

She was right. And this tip has saved me thousands of dollars and counting .

You can approach it two ways:

1.) Proactively

Call a vendor you make regular payments to such as cable TV, cell phone carriers, or trash service. Thank them for their wonderful service and then … ask for a discount.

It’ll take five minutes. One five-minute phone call can result in years of $$$ savings.

2.) Reactively

Let me preface by saying this is NOT an attempt to escape paying for a service you used.

That is wrong. And illegal. Don’t do that.

With that out of the way, we have all received a bill that caught us off guard.

Yesterday, my wife received a $500 bill in the mail for a test she agreed to have done. Contrary to what she was told, insurance did not cover the expense. 😡

My wife wanted to pay the bill and move on. I suggested that she call, explain the misunderstanding, and politely ask for a discount.

The result?

They took $300 off!

How many times have you neglected to make a quick phone call because you were too busy? You might be missing out on hundreds – or even thousands – of dollars.

In fact, Noah Kagan pocketed $2,000 by taking this approach asking one simple question!

What’s the worst possible outcome of this exercise?

Zero downside risk with unlimited upside makes this one of my favorite money-saving activities.

2. Ditch Your Auto Lease

When it comes to saving money, some people just can’t give up their expensive car. And that might be okay as long as you’re not putting your financial plan in jeopardy.

If the goal is to save money, it makes more sense to buy instead of lease .

Ideally, you’ll want to purchase a dependable used car you can keep for the long run.

Because, when you pay off your auto loan (if applicable), you won’t have a car payment!

With leasing, however, you will never own your vehicle. You will forever be making monthly payments towards an asset that loses value by the minute.

If you’re stuck in a lease and want to get out , consider a lease exchange service such as:

  • Lease Exchange App
  • Swap-a-lease

The bottom line: To save more money, consider ditching your lease and buying a used car with low mileage.

3. Throw Away Your Budget…Track Your Expenses Instead!

Budgeting gets all the attention.

But tracking your spending is the real secret to saving more money in 2022.

In fact, the most financially successful people in my life know where every penny goes each month .

When you know where your money is going, you can make informed choices.

Knowledge is power.

For example, I spend ~$600/month playing golf.

Is that good or bad?

It depends!

Golf is REALLY important to me.

So much so that I’m willing to make sacrifices in other areas to maintain this expense.

On the other hand, my wife and I recently decided that spending $3,000 per year on cable television wasn’t meaningful to us.

With that knowledge, we found a way to cut our bill by over 60%.

If you aren’t regularly tracking your expenses, you don’t know where your money is going . Which makes it impossible to how and where to save money.

(Note: Most people underestimate how much they spend by at least 20%!)

Here’s a simple 3-step process for tracking your expenses to save money:

  • Find a tracking method that works for you . It could be something like Mint , YNAB , or even our free fillable spreadsheet .
  • Track your expenses for 3-6 months . Don’t make any judgments about your spending and don’t rush to make any changes. Just track!
  • Review and take action. With this knowledge in your hands, start with the highest expense first and determine if that expenditure aligns with your goals. If not, take action!

Because this exercise can easily fall through the cracks, my wife and I hired a bookkeeper to track our expenses for us. Every quarter, we meet with her to review our financials and discuss changes we want to make or goals we want to set.

The key is to create a reliable, repeatable system that works for you. Stick with it and watch the magic happen.

4. Scan for Free Entertainment

Does it cost money to have fun? Sometimes it does!

You have to pay to get into a concert, and nobody is letting you dine for free.

Then again, there are plenty of ways to have fun without spending money.

If you’re trying to save more money this year, consider experimenting with a $0 entertainment budget for one month . Challenge yourself to see how much fun you can have without spending any money.

Here are some of the best free entertainment ideas to get you started:

  • Take a YouTube yoga class
  • Find a Meetup group that matches your interests
  • Sign up for free trials to test the different streaming services
  • Play a board game or the daily NY Times Crossword Puzzle (mini!)
  • Start a small garden with seeds from a local seed share program

There are plenty of ways to save money and still have fun, so don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.

5. Use Technology to Save Thousands

Figuring out how to save more money can be a time-consuming task. That’s why I love using technology to help.

For example … do you want to cut your monthly utility bills by 25% ? Try Bill Shark or BillFixer .

Perhaps you have forgotten subscription services. There’s an app for that! It’s called TrueBill , and it finds and cancels unused subscriptions. They’ve saved users more than $14 million to date!

Do you have credit card debt that’s preventing you from saving money? Tally is a solution to consider. On average, they’ve saved borrowers an average of $3,972 in interest .

By using technology, you can quickly and easily save more money this year.

6. Grab a Money-Saving Browser Plugin

Saving money should NOT be this easy.

If you shop online and you’re not using a free browser plugin to automatically apply coupons and promo codes to your purchases, you’re missing out on free money .

Here are my three favorites to consider:

  • Amazon Assistant

There are dozens of other money-saving browser plugins. By taking 15-minutes to find a few that work best for you, you’ll keep more money in your pocket this year.

7. Cut Down on Dining Out

I know, I know…yawn.

But it’s amazing how much eating out  can eat up your budget!

If you’re not sure how to get out of the dining-out trap, there are some fantastic recipe apps out there.

While it can be difficult to learn how to cook if you don’t have the skills or time, there are plenty of recipes that are easy and low-cost.

If you need to make things as easy as possible, a crockpot or Instant Pot can also help. There are plenty of recipes for both that let you throw in your ingredients and push “start.” It doesn’t get any more convenient or cheap than that.

8. Get Creative With Media

If you’re a millennial, you’ve likely never paid a cable bill (unless you’re a huge sports fan!). But, even sports fans now have options for “cutting the cord.”

If you’re tired of your pricey cable bill, consider alternatives like Netflix , Hulu Plus , Amazon Prime , or Sling .

You can also get an over-the-air antenna to get free TV .

Heck, you can even catch NFL football games for free !

9. DIY Your Grunt Work

Why pay someone when you can do-it-yourself (DIY) for free?

If you’re forking over a ton of cash for a cleaning service, it can pay off to save that money and clean your own house for a while.

Got minors in the house? You could also put those kids to work!

By assigning cleaning chores to your kids, you can teach them about hard work. The experience of tidying up the house will also prepare them for when they’re out of the nest.

The same advice rings true for the work around the home, including gardening or home improvement projects.

Spend time in your own yard and you’ll receive several benefits. Not only will you get fresh air, but you’ll connect with the Earth and save money!

10. Analyze Your Travel Budget

You can easily spend a ton of money on travel. Most of the time, it depends on your flexibility and your desire to save money.

If your goal is to spend less, there are all kinds of strategies to consider. Tips that can help reduce your travel budget include:

  • Check out the Points Guy to learn how to score free travel. But, only do this if you are debt-free and are able to handle using a credit card (that means paying it off each month!)
  • Check out Secret Flying for airfare deals around the globe.
  • Read up on travel hacks from an expert .
  • Plan your vacation around the best value .
  • Take an epic road trip!
  • Check out local, state, and national parks – don’t forget national wildlife refuges !

11. Pay Off Debt

Far too many people only make the minimum payment on their debts each month. Even worse, many savers don’t take the time to figure out what their debts cost over the long term.

Unfortunately, this can lead to paying hundreds – or even thousands – of dollars in interest each month.

Since interest payments don’t go toward the principal of your debts, this is money down the drain .

If you really want to save money this year, pay off your debt.

Imagine you have $10,000 in credit card debt at 18% APR. You’ve been paying $200 each month. At that rate, you’ll pay an additional $8,622 in interest …and it’ll take 94 months to pay it off.

That’s almost 8 years!

If you’re able to cut your spending to pay off your $10,000 in credit card debt faster, you could avoid almost $9,000 in interest AND free up $200 in extra cash every month.

When you pay off high-interest debt, you just can’t lose.

Try Out New Ways for Saving Money in 2022

If you’re looking for more ways to save money in 2022, don’t forget to think outside the box.

Everyone’s spending habits are different, so it’s likely you’ll have some special circumstances in your life that could help you brainstorm more ways to save.

You may also want to start the process by tracking your spending for a while. Once you know where your money goes each month, it’s a lot easier to find the source of your money woes.

Even small changes can make a giant difference!

Creative Ways To Make Money In 2022

Making money in 2022 will require a lot of creativity and innovation. Here are some of the best ways to make money in 2022.

1. Start A Blog

Starting a blog is a great way to make money in 2022. Not only do you get to share your thoughts and ideas with the world, but you can also monetize your blog by displaying ads or selling products and services. To start a successful blog, you must choose the right platform and create interesting content to capture people’s attention.

How To Choose The Right Blogging Platform:

Many different blogging platforms are available, but not all are created equal. Choosing one that is user-friendly and has all the features you need is essential. Some popular platforms include WordPress, Blogger, and Tumblr.

How To Come Up With Interesting Content:

Your content is what will set your blog apart from the rest. You must come up with topics that people will want to read about and ensure your writing is engaging and well-written. You can also post videos, images, and infographics for added variety.

2. Invest In Cryptocurrency

Investing in cryptocurrency with a crypto bank is a great way to make money in 2022 because it is still a relatively new concept and is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. There are many different types of cryptocurrency, so it’s essential to do your research before investing. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Ripple are all popular choices.

Cryptocurrency is a volatile market, so you need to be prepared for the possibility of losing money. Make sure you only invest what you can afford to lose, and don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Diversifying your portfolio by investing in different types of cryptocurrency is also essential.

3. Sell Products Or Services Online

Many people earn full-time or part-time income by selling products or services online. There are several ways to do this, but the most common is through online marketplaces or creating a website or blog to promote your products or services.

When selling products online, it’s essential to consider what type of product you want to sell. There are several different options, including physical products like toys and clothes, digital products like e-books and software, or services like consulting or design work.

Once you’ve decided on a product, you must determine the best way to sell it. You’ll need to set up a shop on an online marketplace if you’re selling physical products. If you’re selling digital products, you can create a website or blog to promote them or use other online marketing methods like social media or email marketing . And if you’re selling services, you can use websites like Upwork or Fiverr to find clients.
