Eleven Ways to Use The Creative Writing Playbook with Your Kids This Summer

This post may contain affiliate links.

With over 110 opportunities for writing , drawing, doodling, and cartooning, The Creative Writing Playbook ( it’s not a workbook, it’s a play book!) has a little something for everyone. Firm fans of creative writing will pore over the writing tips and tricks and tackle page after page. And beginners might spend more time coloring the delightful Creativity Creature and Cleo, and then picking and choosing which activities to complete.

Eleven Ways to Use The Creative Writing Playbook with Your Kids This Summer

Equally informative, interactive, engaging, and inspiring, The Creative Writing Playbook is ready and waiting to help fill those long summer days and keep boredom at bay with a big dose of creativity! Read on for eleven ways you can use The Creative Writing Playbook with your kids this summer.

creative writing books for grade 4

1. Start off the Summer with a Present

If a little splurge is in your budget, encourage summer creativity by gifting your child a copy of The Creative Writing Playbook , along with a blank or lined notebook, some gel pens, colored pencils, or markers. Ready, set, create!

2. Participate in the BIG Reading Challenge

Check out the genre reading challenge found on page 145…and head to the library to help your child try out new genres and return to old favorites. Better yet, pick out books that are new to you, too, and stretch yourself right along with your child. After all, the best way parents can help kids become readers is by showing that they prioritize reading for themselves, too. How many books can you both read before the end of the summer ?

3. Borrow a Baby Naming Book

While you’re at the library, pick up a baby naming book. Your child can use it to help pick out names for pages 9-11, and beyond. (Yes, baby naming websites abound. But, this way, they can research names without getting distracted by screens.)

4. Make Mini Picture Books for Younger Siblings

creative writing books for grade 4

It’s so exciting to get paid for your work. I remember making a stand in my house and selling pictures for loose change (yes, my parents were my only customers!). If your child has a younger sibling, contribute a small amount to their piggy bank in exchange for creating personalized mini picture books (page 72-23) for bedtime reading fun.

5. Help Your Child Be a Word Collector

After they’ve completed the word collecting activity on page 121, help your child take their love of language further by making a dedicated space for their word collection . Whether it’s a poster board, a small notebook, or a jar with slips of paper, create a place for favorite words to be recorded, remembered, and treasured. (Even grown up authors have “ cinnamon words ”!)

6. Set up a Creative Space

creative writing books for grade 4

Whether by filling a caddy or a bag, or arranging a desk or a cozy chair, gather art and writing supplies and make them easy to access. Just like displaying an instrument on a stand (versus having it tucked away in a case) makes it easier to pick it up and practice, having art and writing supplies (and The Creative Writing Playbook !) at the ready, makes it easier to draw and write.

7. Pick a Pen Pal

Ask a reliable friend or relative if they would be willing to be summer pen pals with your child. (Or maybe your kid can do the arranging on their own!) Guide your child in addressing and stamping postcards to last the whole summer, so that it’s easy to pick one up, write a message, and pop it in the. Mail. Even more fun than writing their own postcards will be getting mail addressed directly to them in return. For kids raised with texting, getting snail mail can feel truly magical.

8. Complete the Activities as a Parent/Kid Team:

If your child prefers teamwork over time alone, buy two copies of The Creative Writing Playbook (or use one book and work on your own paper) and complete two to three activities or prompts each day, together. Celebrate your achievement at the end of the summer with a trip to a local bookstore!

9. Have a Favorite Writing Feast

creative writing books for grade 4

After your child has completed pages 112-114 (using the five senses to write about an imaginary feast), make a feast of your own. It can be as simple as chicken nuggets and carrot sticks, or as fancy as an elaborate tea party—whatever sounds fun and doable! Have index cards and pencils at the table and take notes during the feast. What does the food—and eating together—look, smell, taste, feel, and sound like? Can you write a story inspired by this feast, too?

10. Make Heart Hugs

Use pages 126 and 127, which challenge the reader to fill in hearts with kind words about themselves and a friend or family member, as a jumping-off point to draw, cut out, and fill in more heart hugs to share with loved ones.

11. Keep Calm and Don’t Critique

If your child shares their writing with you, don’t jump in with suggestions for improvement. Instead, compliment their strengths. There’s plenty of time for improving writing on a more technical level later. Right now, keep the focus on fostering a love of creativity so that your child feels empowered to continue their creative journey.

Format Of Creative Writing Topics For Grade 4:

The format of creative writing is flexible, allowing students to explore different styles and formats based on their interests and creativity. However, a basic structure can be followed to help students organize their writing:

A day at the beach 7. A surprise party for a friend 8. An imaginary creature and its adventures 9. A Day in the Life of a talking animal 10. A time travel adventure to the past or future

Examples Of Creative Writing Topics For Grade 4:

1. A Day in the Life of a Superhero:

Today was just another day for my superhero alter ego. I woke up early, put on my trusty suit, and headed out to save the world. The first task of the day was to stop a robbery in progress. I swooped in and caught the criminals before they could get away with the loot. Next, I had to stop a runaway train from crashing into the city. With my super strength, I was able to stop the train just in time. By the end of the day, I was exhausted, but I knew that I had made the world a little bit safer.

2. A Magical Adventure in a Forest:

One sunny day, my friends and I decided to explore the forest behind our neighborhood. As we wandered deeper into the woods, we stumbled upon a magical clearing filled with talking animals and shimmering trees. We soon discovered that the forest was under threat from an evil sorcerer who wanted to destroy the magical creatures and take over the forest. With the help of our new animal friends, we set out on a quest to stop the sorcerer and save the forest. It was a wild adventure, but we were able to defeat the sorcerer and restore peace to the forest.

3. A Journey to the Center of the Earth:

My journey to the center of the Earth began when I discovered a secret passage in my backyard. I followed the tunnel deep underground and eventually found myself in a mysterious underground world. As I explored this strange new world, I encountered all sorts of amazing creatures, from giant underground rivers to glowing crystals. But my journey was not without danger. I had to dodge falling rocks and avoid getting lost in the labyrinthine tunnels. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I reached the center of the Earth and gazed in wonder at the molten core.

4. A Visit to a Planet in Outer Space:

One day, I was taking a walk when a spaceship landed right in front of me. The door opened, and a friendly alien invited me aboard. We blasted off into space and traveled to his home planet, which was filled with strange creatures and plants. I was amazed at how different everything was compared to Earth. The alien showed me around the planet and even introduced me to his family. We played games and shared food, and I felt like I had made new friends. But soon, it was time to head back to Earth. As we said our goodbyes and the spaceship lifted off, I realized that this would be a day I would never forget.

5. A Secret Hidden in a Haunted House:

I had always been curious about the old abandoned house on the corner of my street. One day, I decided to explore it. As I stepped inside, I felt a chill run down my spine. The house was spooky and dark, and I could hear strange noises coming from the shadows. But then, I noticed a glimmer of light coming from a crack in the wall. I pushed aside the old wallpaper and discovered a secret room. Inside the room, I found an old diary that belonged to the previous owner of the house. As I read through the diary, I realized that there was a treasure hidden somewhere in the house. I set out to find the treasure and eventually discovered it hidden in a secret compartment behind the fireplace. It was an amazing adventure that I would never forget.

6. A Day at the Beach:

The sun was shining bright, and the waves were crashing against the shore. It was the perfect day for a trip to the beach. I spent the day building sandcastles, collecting seashells, and splashing in the ocean. The salty sea breeze filled my nostrils, and the warm sand tickled my toes. As the sun began to set, I sat on the beach and watched the colors of the sky change from blue to orange to pink. It was a beautiful moment that I wished could last forever.

7. A Surprise Party for a Friend:

My best friend’s birthday was coming up, and I wanted to plan a surprise party. I gathered all of our friends and decorated the backyard with balloons and streamers. When my friend arrived, we yelled, “Surprise!” and she was overjoyed. We played games, ate cake, and danced to our favorite songs. It was a perfect party that brought us all closer together.

8. An Imaginary Creature and Its Adventures:

My imagination had always been wild, but today, it was especially active. I imagined a creature with wings, a horn, and rainbow-colored fur. This creature, which I named Rainbow, had all sorts of adventures. We flew through the clouds, explored ancient ruins, and even met a talking tree. It was an exciting and magical journey that allowed me to explore my creativity.

9. A Day in the Life of a Talking Animal:

What if animals could talk? I imagined a world where my pet dog, Charlie, could talk. I wrote about a day in his life, from waking up and begging for breakfast to chasing squirrels in the park. Charlie had a lot to say and had all sorts of adventures. It was a fun and entertaining way to explore what it would be like if animals could communicate with us.

10. A Time Travel Adventure to the Past or Future:

What if we could travel through time? I imagined a time machine that could take me anywhere I wanted to go. I wrote about traveling to the future and seeing what the world would be like in 100 years. I saw flying cars, robots doing chores, and people living on Mars. It was a fascinating adventure that made me think about what the future might hold. Alternatively, I could write about traveling back in time and witnessing historical events, such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence or the first moon landing.

Simple lesson A very well organized to do every day. I like it.

Amy LT – July 1, 2020

Great Guidance Every summer I buy workbooks for my two boys. This year I chose Kumon, I purchase the whole collection of Grade 4 for my son going into 4th grade and the whole collection of Grade 3 (thinking Grade 2 would be too easy) for my son going into 2nd grade. Later on I found that my younger son had difficulties in some areas in Grade 3 so I bought Grade 2.This has been a great guidance for my kids and I. The books helped my kids learn step by step and I really do see improvements. Its great for me, I simply use the answer sheet to correct and it helps me find out what their weaknesses are. Overall I really like Kumon workbooks compare to previous companies that I have purchased because I do see improvements. Next year I will purchase Kumon again.

charlotte simmons – March 28, 2020

No room for careless mistakes! Get your kid to pay attention! What I like about Kumon workbooks is that each page is very short, but also very challenging. My son is bright but has a short attention span, and is pretty careless with his work. When we first started this, he had meltdown after meltdown because he wanted to rush through it, and he would do it all incorrectly. The book is set up so that if the child does not read carefully, he or she cannot possibly get the answers right. Now that my son understands that, he’s been doing way better. I’m grateful because it’s been a very uphill battle to get him to do things carefully and not rush through his work. It was showing up on his report card, too. Now he’s developing a habit of reading fully, and making sure he understands the objectives of the activities. If you have a bright but careless child, I would highly recommend this workbook.

LifeIsGood – November 26, 2015

My home schooler likes this a lot My going -on -4th -grade -level daughter (we home school) likes this work book. She does one or two pages a day and she told me , ” I think this really is helping me with writing.” She uses kumon math workbooks (just started grade 4 in math after finishing grade 3) and I didn’t get kumon writing workbook for her in the past because 1- I didn’t think she need it 2- it might be too easy 3- it might be waste of money if it was mostly blank space with writing prompts only (She reads 5th grade level books and writes stories all the time). I was curious so I ordered grade 5 writing workbook. It was challenging for her on her own. It looked great with variety of exercises so I ordered grade 4. She loves it. She does it on her own, gets few wrong answers here and there which tells me this is the right level for her. It’s not what I thought it was- bunch of writing prompts to encourage kids who hate writing. It teaches grammar, sentence structure, reading comprehension, etc. I highly recommend it.

VariMommy09 – March 24, 2017

Great practice for my 2nd grader! My son is 7 years old and in second grade. He needs extra practice in writing grammatically correct sentences. This workbook gives him the perfect amount of challenge. I also love how this book reiterates reading comprehension. He can’t just skim through the passages and answer the questions, he must fully comprehend what he is reading and be able to summarize what he read in order to answer correctly. I also enjoy how the child has to understand the definition of the vocabulary word in order to match it to the correct sentence. I use this workbook at home for extra practice. I would say this book would be relatively easy for a 4th grader. I would say this book is geared more towards 2nd-3rd graders. (Also note, Kumon seems to overestimate these books when selecting grade levels).

Kei Hara – April 8, 2021

Amazon Customer – March 4, 2020

Good but not great We liked the idea of progressive introduction to writing. However, for an exercise book about writing, we would expect the student to WRITE and not read. Some chapters are dedicated to finding the main topic where the child has to write fewer than 5 words around 6 times. Also the lessons about writing complete paragraphs are very limited. Overall a good method but with a lack of content and practice for the topic.

Zeus – August 10, 2020

Writing Good book.

Marina – September 29, 2020

Too confusing ! No instruction or explanation… Just busy work. Very confusing. The topics are actually easy for a fourth graders but the instructions are very confusing. There is also NO explanation. Ie. “Write the statement”. My son says, what’s the difference between a sentence and a statement ? There are no examples. He also feels like it is busy work. We just finished brain quest 4 and thought this would help with more writing practice, but so far, it is confusing busy work…. Even I don’t know what the instructions want and have to keep referring to the answer key at the end of the book.

Janelle Butler – August 4, 2015

It is perfect for “filling in the gaps” for my son I have ordered all the books in the 3rd and 4th grade series…math and reading/writing. After I ordered 2 books, I was so impressed that I wanted them all. It is perfect for “filling in the gaps” for my son. He can work at his own pace and continue learning throughout the summer. We are going to continue with these books throughout the school year. I would highly recommend these books to any parent who wants to help their child make major improvements in reading and math.

momof2 – November 5, 2015

This is very well laid out. It contains some … This is very well laid out. It contains some grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure exercises. It progresses into paragraphs and finally short stories. I do wish it more quickly went into story writing as we are ready for that. I may need to get the 5th grade book soon for my 4th grader.

Amazon Customer – July 22, 2016

Great book for summer! As a teacher, I worry about my kids regressing academically in the summer. I purchased this writing book for my son who is going into 4th grade. Love this workbook. It introduces 4th grade writing vocabulary and skills. It starts with comprehensive activities and by the end of the book, your kiddo will be able to write a 3 paragraph essay!

Sindiful – December 3, 2015

Does Exactly What We Needed It To We use this as as encouragement for my son to improve his writing. If he does two pages, then he gets an extra hour of game time. We’ve already seen improvement in his writing skills! Kumon has been a part of my sons life since he was a toddler. Always nice to have a reliable learning tool.

Jodi – September 20, 2019

Very Helpful This book is a great little writing companion. My sons learned a lot from it. Works well for home school.

Usny – June 28, 2017

Stephanie Bartsch – November 14, 2017

Just the” write” amount! This book is perfect for my dysgraphic 4th grader. She hates to write, but she needs to. This is the perfect mix. I have her do one page a day.

minas – November 29, 2016

I love the Kumon workbooks in general I love the Kumon workbooks in general, I have been using this to supplement our homeschool writing program as there is not quite enough focus on some of the concepts but this workbook addresses those areas perfectly.

Bosslady – January 8, 2014

Excellent! I bought this for my daughter as review over the summer between 4th and 5th grade and I can see a big difference in her writing this year. It was very helpful for her. She excels in math and science but not so much in writing. Definitely worth the money.

Meg – February 20, 2014

More afforable and very well organized material from Kumon! I saw this book in Beestar recommend list. I am very impressed with the quality and nice organization in the chapters. The books make the Kumon system more interesting to kids and the prices are more affordable. I sent my kids to Kumon classes locally but it got boring over time and the material was not stimulating their thinking skills rather than a lot of repetitions. Other resources were liked by my kids and their friends, such as Beestar is fun with more vivid problem solving questions and is convenient to Parent with the online access and about $30 for whole semester. I am glad my kids enjoyed work on this book so far as the additional material besides Beestar. It has the right amount of work and can self paced. I am hoping my kids will use them for a long period together with Beestar, and I hope Kumon will publish books for students of higher grades.

fayw – November 17, 2013

Sahar – October 21, 2022

Improved reading and application skills Best Features: Quick exercises, fun to do, teaches reading and comprehension skillsWorst Features: NoneI really love the Kumon workbooks. I bought this for my son to improve his writing during the summer and he absolutely loves doing the activities in here. They are on par with what is being taught in school and great to reviewing the precious grade before starting new! For the kids who went into distant learning during COVID these were a godsend!

Manikandan – November 27, 2022

Useful Useful

Jjay 🖤 – May 18, 2021

Kumon Writing Writing grade 4 looks at developing statements, sentences, main ideas, topics, paragraphs and more. It looks more challenging than the grade 3 as should be expected. The book has 35 double page excerises and provides answers pages too.Colourful, attractive and well put together. USA Grade 4 is UK year 5 I think. This book is made up from a set of 6, grade 1-6 USA or Year 2-7 UK.This book doesn’t come with a certificate unlike it’s UK counterpart. This book worked well for my child who was able to complete the grade 3 book comfortably.

Melanie Torres – May 29, 2022

Great My son can do these on his own. Enjoys them. Great tool to help.

April M – December 21, 2021

cheryl113 – October 13, 2021

Well organized book to learn for the kids My son loves it, it is organized very reasonable, started from how to write a statement.

Lis – May 9, 2020

Not bad. Good for killing time. Some questions are bit confusing for kids to get the right sense of what it is asking. In this case, parents can look at the answer page and figure out.

Jing – August 4, 2021

writing It feels too easy for my children, so I keep the second child in the future

online shopper – October 26, 2020

Try this, instead of going to Kumon school. Our daughter started to go Kumon school, just to find out that all they did was giving her pages from Kumon Workbooks. So we just purchased set of books from Amazon and started studying at home. The books are very well designed, so kids can improve their skills gradually.

Priscila – February 7, 2021

Good practice It’s simple and easy to do. It helps with confidence. I would say it’s a level grade 3 depending on child.

Techniques.b Excellent to supplement schoolCurricular.

Dipankar – May 12, 2020

On time Ordered before, they are good books, came within 10 days which is good in this Covid situation

Elena Nikolova – June 24, 2016

Excellent Book My daughter (8 years old) started using the book only recently, but I can say that the book is very well-structured. It starts with a gentle introduction (rewriting questions as statements, combining phrases into sentences, punctuation, etc) and builds up to planning and writing short essays. The work is divided into two pages per session. I found this workload very well measured. I can only recommend it, especially if you children have a problem with structuring well their writing or need more practice with writing in general.

mamaz – September 27, 2019
