Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review: Striking curved design makes this the S6 to crave

The Galaxy S6's edgier sibling adds a stunning wraparound screen. If you have the cash, it's worth the steeper cost.

galaxy s 6 edge

Editors' note (March 28, 2017): Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus , the follow ups to 2016's excellent Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge . Priced at $750 (£689 and AU$1,199), the Galaxy S8 features a beautifully curved 5.8-inch screen with an ultra-narrow bezel; facial recognition as an alternative way to unlock the phone; and Samsung's nascent Bixby voice assistant . The S8 Plus costs a bit more -- $850, £779 or AU$1349 -- and comes equipped with a larger body and battery, but is otherwise identical.

The bottom line.

Samsung has instituted an eight-point battery test on its new phones in an effort to reassure customers that it has addressed the issues that plagued its exploding Note 7 last year. To see how the Galaxy S8 and S8 Edge stack up against their predecessors, check out CNET's side-by-side comparison .

The original Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review, published in April 2015 and updated since then, follows.

When the Galaxy S6 and 6S Edge debuted in the Spring of 2015, they represented a dramatic departure for Samsung. Gone was the utilitarian plastic build of every Galaxy S past; in its place, glass and aluminum alloy, and, in the case of the S6 Edge, a uniquely curved screen. CNET designated the Galaxy S6 "first great smartphone of 2015," awarding it an Editor's Choice. The Galaxy S6 Edge is an even higher-end, "designer" version of the S6 -- and you'll pay a premium for it.

The Galaxy S6 Edge's innovative, rounded-side display has earned a reputation as one of the best screens on a smartphone. And though the S6 and S6 Edge are close siblings with similar specs -- attractive aesthetics, first class components, and a few features (like wireless charging support) that cannot be found on any iPhone -- the S6 Edge certainly boasts the more premium look and feel. That noted, in the US, the S6 Edge costs $100 more than the S6 on contract, and about $100 to $130 more off-contract, with $100 bumps for each storage size. Given their nearly identical specs, the Galaxy S6 remains the better value.

In March 2016, Samsung introduced newer versions of its flagship Galaxy, the S7 and S7 Edge , at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. While it has many of the same specs as the S7 -- a 12-megapixel camera, water resistance, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, and a microSD slot -- the S7 Edge has a larger, 5.5-inch screen versus the S7's 5.1-incher. Also noteworthy is the S7 Edge's 3,600mAh battery -- rated for longer run time that the S7, the Edge 6+ and even the Galaxy Note 5 , which is a real marathon runner.

Real phones have real curves: Samsung's bold S7 Edge (pictures)

galaxy s 6 edge

If you already own an S6 Edge or even a newer S6 Edge+, the upgrade to an S7 or S7 Edge may not be worth it. That noted, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge remain affordable, competent, full-featured Samsung phones and represent some of the best values in Samsung's lineup.

Editors' note: This review has been updated extensively since its original publication on March 26, with additions including battery testing results and additional comparisons to the standard Galaxy S6. Ratings have also been added.

The S6 Edge: Like the S6, in a far prettier package

Releasing multiple variants of its Galaxy phones is old hat with Samsung. But 2015's Galaxy S6 line is the first time the company has announced and released two sibling models simultaneously. Make no mistake, though: the hardware differences between the two handsets are mostly skin-deep.

Where the S6 has straight sides, the S6 Edge tapers on its right and left sides, where the curved portion of the screens arc to meet the back. Though it feels slimmer, the Edge is a hair thicker in its fattest part, but also a tad lighter. The power button and nano-SIM card slot also move up top on this variant.

Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge dimensions

The Edge also has a slightly higher capacity battery, presumably to work with night mode on the Edge display: 2,600mAh on the Edge versus 2,550mAh for the standard S6. The Edge gives us an average of 13.5 hours of battery run time in our looping-video tests, an hour over the S6's 12.4-hour average. Keep in mind that these tests don't take into account real-world longevity, especially if you're constantly using the Edge screen features, like night mode.

While both the S6 and S6 Edge are available in gold, black and white, Samsung throws in some color to each lineup. The Edge's portfolio gets jewel-toned emerald green, while the S6 springs for topaz blue.

galaxy s 6 edge

Besides the unique screen and the few subtle distinctions listed above, the S6 Edge is otherwise identical to the standard S6. That includes the same 1440p ultra-HD screen, 16-megapixel camera and Exynos octa-core processor.

See my in-depth Galaxy S6 review for more details on how that translates into performance and everyday usage, and rest assured that the Edge delivers the same experience. (Except for the screen features and design flair -- which are, in fact, pretty cool.)

Design: Two curves really are better than none

Rounded glass on the left and right sides of the 5.1-inch metal-wrought Galaxy S6 Edge give this phone its name. The curved portions of screen meet the phone's back to form symmetrical ridges on either side and a kind of flattened bubble effect on the glass itself.

This actually works out better than it sounds. Its unique shape pops, giving it plenty of in-hand appeal. The phone feels aggressively slim, yet balanced, and the sharper sides provide a surprisingly solid grip.

While I had no problem fumbling the device, all that slim glass gives it a much more petite and delicate look and feel than a lot of other phones. You may feel more comfortable protecting all that investment in a case. Unfortunately, there aren't a ton of options at the time of this writing (but I'm getting in a gaggle of cases to find my favorite, and will update y'all soon.)

galaxy s 6 edge

Compared with the S6's familiar rectangular shape, the S6 Edge is palpably modern and chic. If you're wondering, the Note Edge felt the same way despite its asymmetry, though I like the way this Edge looks even more.

The curved display isn't only an aesthetic affectation, either. Navigating around the S6 and the Edge side-by-side in real life produces more lifelike icons and images than when viewing them on the flat S6 display. (Alas, this doesn't translate well in a photo.)

The concave Galaxy Round , which is sold only in South Korea, had some of this effect, too. When reviewing that phone, the screen's deeper bend occasionally caused a parallax problem, one that the S6 Edge seems to avoid since most of its surface is flat.

Edge display: Cute, but only a little useful

Think of the S6 Edge's sidebar, called the Edge screen, as a specialized communications hub.

If you're familiar with this region on the Note Edge -- the 2014 phablet that offered a similar wraparound screen, albeit on only one side -- it's time to reflash that image. Gone is the always-on strip of interface for launching apps and sometimes viewing alerts. Here, the optional Edge screen slides out from the left or right when you want it, but otherwise remains hidden from view. You can even disable it.

The only downside here is that if you want to open the Edge screen, you have to first locate and then slide out a thin gray tab in the upper third of your display, which is easy to miss.

galaxy s 6 edge

Mostly, you'll use the Edge screen to view notifications for email, texts, missed calls and app activity (you'll customize this in the settings). These notices flash on the sidebar strip without you having to check on them. Yes, it can be a little redundant alongside the notification shade up top, but you'll be able to read more of the message on the Edge display, which I do find convenient.

Do these things with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge's edge (pictures)

Five favorite friends

The Edge screen also serves as a color-coded hub for five of your favorite contacts. Select one, and you can fast-track a call or message. If you miss an Edge-friend's correspondence, a slim tab in their designated color appears on the side of the display to alert you, like a personalized sticky note. Slide that tab open to start the process of calling or texting them back.

There's one other very specific activity. Say you have the phone upside-down on the table during dinner. If one of your five besties calls or texts, the edge of the phone will glow with their associated color. If you can't pick up the phone, you can press a sensor near the camera module to send a preprogrammed message.

Night mode and display-on-demand

Although Samsung has shed most of the Note Edge's original functionality, it did carry over two features to the S6 Edge. My favorite, night mode, displays the time during your designated sleeping hours while the rest of the screen stays off. It's just bright enough to read if you wake up in the middle of the night, but dim enough to help you reclaim those z's.

You can actually swipe the sleeping Edge display at any time (so long as the phone is on) to pull up the date and time, weather and a badge for missed or unread messages. There's a little lag here that Samsung should fix, but it works well enough.

The new crowned king

Yes, Samsung largely created the

I'm glad it did. It was a bit of a gamble, but the industry is better for it. The Edge's rounded edges are so successful because the phone's smoothness draws you in the minute you hold it in your hands and behold its slightly convex screen.

galaxy s 6 edge

Versus the iPhone

There are so many similarities between the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S6, that their Android or iOS operating system becomes the most distinguishing factor between the two. Until you consider the Edge. Apple hasn't tried anything like a curved-screen phone, and Samsung's efforts both look fantastic and also suck you right in.

Samsung's points for creativity tip it over the (ahem) edge.

Versus the Galaxy S6

Compared to the Edge, the base model Galaxy S6 is the everyman's phone, and it carries its well-rounded features and high-performing hardware to the Edge as well.

If you're feeling flush, the Edge is the phone to buy, mostly because of its design aesthetics and also the smattering of practical functionality applied to the Edge screen. I still believe that these tricks are too limited to be "killer" apps, so your decision really comes down to where you stand on design aesthetics.

Fiscal conservatives will want to spend that extra money on stepping up to the regular S6's 64GB, or 128GB capacities, unless they're tempted by the Edge's supple shape. You can't go wrong either way: that's a decision that you and your wallet are going to have to wrestle over.

But make sure you check out both phones in person. Once you get a real-life look at the Edge, you may find that premium a lot easier to justify.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Review: Killer Curves

While pricey, the Galaxy S6 Edge sports a sexier design than the iPhone 6, awesome front and back cameras and a gorgeous display.

It feels like I'm holding a piece of the future – as if someone sliced me off a piece of a Daft Punk helmet and put it in my hands. And that's exactly the vibe Samsung is going for with the Galaxy S6 Edge, which makes a clean break from the brand’s plasticky past.

With its glass-and-aluminum body and curved, dual-edge display (a first for smartphones), the S6 Edge is easily the sexiest smartphone yet. But given that the regular S6 has all of the same features - including a powerful octa-core processor, quicker and brighter camera and sharp quad HD screen - are those curves enough to justify the $100 premium over the regular S6 and other flagship phones?

iPhone-Beating Design

Most people don't believe me when I tell them that the Galaxy S6 Edge looks better than the iPhone. And this is coming from a long-time, card-carrying iPhone snob.

Credit: Jeremy Lips / Tom's Guide

Samsung has delivered a complete redesign, starting with strong Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and back. The frame of the phone uses aluminum, complete with a bottom that resembles the iPhone 6. The result is a handset that's as sturdy as it is alluring.

The S6 Edge comes in Black Sapphire, White Pearl and Gold Platinum. I love the way the black model plays with light so that it looks blue depending on how it's being held. The white version did a much better job resisting fingerprints, but it also looks boring. Having a curved display on both sides makes the S6 Edge sleeker, but there's not a ton you can do with it (see below).

Measuring just 0.26 inches thick and weighing 4.7 ounces, the S6 Edge is thinner and lighter than the regular S6 (0.28 inches, 4.9 ounces) and slightly thinner and a bit heavier than the iPhone 6 (0.27 inches, 4.6 ounces), which has a smaller screen. HTC’s One M9 weighs a hefty 5.5 ounces, and the LG G4 is 5.47 ounces, although it has a larger 5.5-inch screen.

I do have some complaints about the design. At first it felt almost too narrow in my hand while typing; it could be easier to grip. And you need to be careful not to accidentally activate something on screen when you pick up the phone or when you're passing it to someone else to show off a photo or video. That's the cost of having almost all screen up front.

Finally, A Camera That Cures Apple Envy

You don't even have to think about it. A double tap of the Home button is all it takes to launch the S6 Edge’s beefed-up camera. It didn't save me a ton of time versus swiping up on the iPhone 6's home screen (1.5 versus 2 seconds) but I appreciated the convenience.

galaxy s 6 edge

Although the S6 Edge's back camera has the same 16-megapixel resolution as the S5, Samsung has made some major upgrades. The f/1.9 aperture lets in considerably more light than its predecessor, as well as the iPhone 6 (f/2.2).

In side-by-side shots versus the iPhone 6 Plus, the S6 Edge delivered better sharpness, color saturation and contrast in some shots. Take this photo of a bunch of flowers. The S6 Edge manages to bring out fine shading in the petals, while the iPhone's shot has a hazier look.

Indoors without much light, a portrait of my co-worker Valentina offers more detail - especially in her scarf - as well as better color.

One of the highlight features of the S6 Edge's camera is the tracking autofocus, which lets you keep a moving subject in focus. I just tapped on a moving van and a yellow square appeared on the live view, following it as I continued to hold down the shutter. Surprisingly, all but one of the 11 shots had the writing on the van door in focus.

Samsung has streamlined the number of camera modes available, giving you eight out of the box.

MORE: Galaxy S6 Camera Takes Better Pictures Than iPhone 6 Plus

These include selective focus, slow motion, fast motion and panorama. If you want other options - like Sports Shot and Sound & Shot - you'll have to download them.

Sharper, More Group-Friendly Selfies

Samsung deserves kudos for the 5-MP front camera on this S6 Edge (up from 2 MP). Its 120-degree, wide-angle lens let me capture three people at once much easier than with the iPhone 6's front shooter. I could have fit a couple more folks in the frame. I noticed some noise in the photo when I viewed it on my desktop, but overall, the S6 Edge delivered warm colors and a good amount of detail.

galaxy s 6 edge

If you want to freak out your friends - in a good way - try the Virtual Shot mode. It stitches together a short 360-degree tour of you and your surroundings that you can then share with friends as a video.

On your device, or another Galaxy S6, you can swipe left or right on the screen to spin the image around. Virtual Shot mode also works with the back camera if you want to give a 3D tour of an object.

Best Quad HD Display, Louder Audio

No, there's not much content that takes advantage of 2560 x 1440 pixels on a phone, but there’s no denying that the 5.1-inch quad HD Super AMOLED display on the Galaxy S6 is the most luscious yet. Text in websites and notifications look as sharp as what I'm used to seeing on the printed page.

When watching The Age of Ultron trailer at 1440p, I could make out nearly every vein in the Hulk's green neck, as well the patches of soot and dirt all over his battle-worn torso. This panel is certainly colorful and bright, delivering 150 percent of the sRGB color gamut and an impressive 536 nits of brightness. That's above the category average and the LG G4 (396 nits) but below the iPhone 6.

During the trailer I had to turn the thumping soundtrack down so as not to disturb my colleagues. According to Samsung, the bottom-mounted speaker gets 1.5 times louder than the S5, and I believe it. Repositioning the speaker from the back was a smart move, because it doesn't get muffled when placed on a table. When I played Muse's "Starlight" on Spotify , the S6 got louder but sounded harsh at max volume; the iPhone 6 sounded a little fuller.

Fastest Phone Yet

Samsung dumped Qualcomm's Snapdragon CPU in favor of its own octa-core, 14 nanometer Exynos processor for the Galaxy S6 Edge. That chip gets paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of UFS 2.0 flash storage. In everyday use, I noticed little to no lag with this phone, although I could do without the animated transitions.

The S6 Edge took only 2 minutes and 25 seconds to transcode an HD video to 480p in the Vidtrim app. That's about 2 minutes faster than the Snapdragon 805-powered Galaxy Note 4. By comparison, the Snapdragon 810-powered HTC One M9 took a leisurely 4:44.

galaxy s 6 edge

On Geekbench, which measures overall performance, the S6 Edge notched 5,335. That smokes the iPhone 6's mark of 2,931 and the Galaxy Note 4 (3,124). The HTC One M9 also trailed the Samsung with a score of 3,818. The LG G4, which packs a Snapdragon 808 chip, scored 3,493.

The S6 Edge also excelled on 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited, which measures graphics performance. It scored 21,193, compared with 16,558 for the iPhone 6 and 20,126 for the Galaxy Note 4. However, the HTC One M9 finished with a stronger 22,804. The LG G4 once again trailed with 18,510.

We then tried the demanding GFXBench 3.1 OpenGL graphics test. On the T-Rex portion (1080 offscreen) of this benchmark, which renders a 3D scene with highly detailed textures, the S6 Edge scored 50 frames per second versus 48 fps for the HTC One M9 and 42.4 fps for the iPhone 6.

A Softer, Cuddlier TouchWiz

Like a hoarder that promises to clean up its act, Samsung has been reducing the clutter with each iteration of its TouchWiz software. With the S6 Edge, the company says that TouchWiz has 40 percent less built-in features and steps for doing things than previous models, such as making menu selections. The settings menu is definitely more intuitive and less onerous than before, thanks to some Quick Settings shortcuts up top for things like Sounds and Notifications and the Display and Edge Screen.

Credit: Cherlynn Low

Overall, TouchWiz looks and feels friendlier than on the S5. For example, the Calendar icon is no longer just a flat white box with a number on it; now you can see a little fold in the middle (like a real desk calendar). And all the icons have rounded, not sharp, edges.

galaxy s 6 edge

Of course, Samsung can’t help but add new features here and there; for instance, swiping down with two fingers on an email message lets you reply all, set a reminder or delete.

Improved Fingerprint Scanner

No more swiping! Samsung ditched the finicky fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S5 in favor of one you just tap on the S6 Edge. Not only is this implementation as easy to use as the iPhone 6, I encountered fewer false negatives.

galaxy s 6 edge

Eventually, the fingerprint sensor may also be used for mobile payments, but for now the only other uses are signing into websites and into your Samsung account.

Edge Screen Doesn't Do Enough

As slick as the dual curved-edge display looks on the Edge 6, there's not much you can do with it. Swiping in from the right side of the screen launches People Edge, which lets you quickly access your favorite contacts - each marked with a distinctive color. Note that you can move the edge screen to the left or right side.

Credit: Cherlynn Low

If you happen to have the phone turned face down on a table, the edge display will glow that hue when that person calls. Neat. There's even a quick-reply option, which enabled me to send a canned message to an incoming caller by placing my hand on the heart rate sensor.

Unfortunately, Samsung limited access to People Edge to the lock screen and home screens. I’d like to access the feature from within apps as well.

With the display turned off, you can glance at various tickers for notifications, news, stocks and sports, but there's really no reason to versus enjoying the full phone experience. The only thing I'd use with the display off is the clock mode, which was dim enough not to wake me.

Credit: Cherlynn Low

The Galaxy Note Edge does more with its edge display, including offering instant access to your favorite apps and a dedicated app store. I wish the S6 Edge did at least the former.

Shorter Battery Life Than Predecessor (But Better Than Competition)

First, the good news. The Galaxy S6 Edge comes with a charger that juices the phone up to 50 percent in 30 minutes. Hate wires? The phone supports both the Qi and PMA standard, which means you can use any number of wireless charging pads. Plus, businesses such as Starbucks and McDonalds are starting to offer wireless charging stations. Even IKEA is getting into the act, with Qi-enabled furniture. However, there's no denying the S6 Edge suffers from shorter battery life than the S5.

On our battery test, which involves continuous 4G LTE Web surfing on 150 nits of screen brightness, the S6 Edge lasted 8 hours and 57 minutes. That runtime is better than the smartphone average of 8:22 and trounces is the HTC One M9 (7:14), but it's a full 2 hours behind the older S5.

At least the 2,600 mAh battery gives you more capacity and endurance than the 2,550 mAh battery on the regular S6, which lasted 8:32. The S6 Edge also outlasted the LG G4 (7:38).

Lacks Removable Battery, microSD

I’m not that bothered by these omissions, but a lot of people are. Up until now, the Galaxy S line has sported a removable back, allowing you to replace the battery or add a higher capacity pack. You've also been able to add a microSD card to expand the storage. To create a slimmer package, Samsung opted for a sealed design that eschews these features.

Given that the S6 Edge starts with 32GB of memory now, the lack of expandable memory is less of an issue, but HTC includes a microSD card slot on its One M9. The Galaxy Note 4 offers both a removable battery and a microSD.

Some Bloatware on Board (But Some Good Stuff)

Samsung may have caught up Apple in the design and camera departments, but you still have to deal with carrier bloatware and other apps that may have zero value. There's a whole T-Mobile folder of stuff you don't really need, including Name ID, TV and Visual Voicemail. However, I would probably use My Account and Mobile Hotspot.

galaxy s 6 edge

Other bundled third-party fare includes a suite of Microsoft apps (OneDrive, OneNote and Skype), Amazon (did you know there was one?!) and Lookout for security.

galaxy s 6 edge

Samsung includes some of its own wares, such as S Health for keeping tabs on your fitness and heart rate, Smart Manager (which monitors battery, storage, RAM and security), the cool Milk music app (powered by Slacker).

Samsung Pay Not Ready

The Galaxy S6 Edge will let you make mobile payments via the Samsung Pay service, promising a wider array of retailer options when it goes live this summer. That's because it will leverage both magnetic secure transmission technology and NFC. However, it remains to be seen how easy this service will be to use.

BOTTOM LINE

The Galaxy S6 Edge and S6 are practically identical. They share the same speedy octa-core Samsung Exynos processor, sharp 5.1-inch quad HD screen, faster and brighter camera and built-in wireless charging -- all wrapped up in premium glass-and-metal bodies. They're also both missing the same features versus the S5, including a microSD Card slot and a removable battery. However, the curved screen makes a more stunning impression. It's just too bad that Samsung couldn't find more to do with it, like the Galaxy Note Edge.

Credit: Jeremy Lips / Tom's Guide

Still, the Edge lasts longer on a charge, and to me the regular S6 reminds me too much of the iPhone 6. Priced $100 higher, the S6 Edge isn't the better value. But it's the one I’d buy. If you prefer a phablet, the Note 4 gives you a bigger screen, longer battery life and a built-in pen. The HTC One M9 is another fairly strong competitor, but it's heavier than the S6 Edge, has a lower-res display, and its camera has received a lukewarm reception.

It's a tougher call between the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. For the same $299, you could get an iPhone 6 with 64GB of memory (versus 32GB for the Samsung), a great camera and access to the hottest apps first. But if you're an Android fan, the S6 Edge is the sexiest and fastest smartphone available.

Update : The release of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus has meant the price of the Galaxy S6 Edge has dropped even further and is now much more affordable. Plus you can download Android Nougat (but no Android Oreo ) software for the phone now.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is a striking handset, taking the title as the world's first dual curved displays smartphone.

It attracts the eye, puts butterflies in my stomach and makes me weak at the knees. Samsung has, at last, made a handset which not only packs a powerful punch, but looks fantastic too.

Following on from the Galaxy Note Edge which boasted a single curved screen, the Galaxy S6 Edge was rumored for some time so its arrival wasn't a surprise - it's the natural progression for Samsung's curved display technology.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge price

At launch, the entry level 32GB model rocked a wallet trembling SIM-free price tag of around £700 (around $1030, AU$1320). But now, you'll be able to find that model in particular for about $420 (£360, about AU$625).

If you fancy 128GB of internal storage, those prices have fallen sharply, too but it's a little bit harder to find now the phone is a bit older.

Of course, shop around  and you'll be able to find it a little cheaper than Samsung's official site. As more time passes, you'll be able to find this device for a much more affordable rate.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review

I've already expressed my love for the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge's design, but in truth this is a Jekyll and Hyde device.

Place the S6 Edge face up on a desk and you can't help but be impressed with the sweeping sides, rounded metal frame and overall premium appeal of the handset.

These are compliments usually reserved for the iPhone range and HTC's One series, but Samsung has managed to haul its design department into the 21st century banishing plastic to the lesser mobiles in its line up.

There's no question there are some similarities to Apple 's design here. The placement of the headphone jack, microUSB port and machine drilled speaker holes on the base mimic the iPhone 6 , while the change from a volume rocker to separate metal keys on the left also suggests a Cupertino influence.

With the edges of the handset tapering to a very slender profile thanks to those dual curved displays there's no space for a SIM tray - plus that glass rear isn't coming off.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review

This has forced Samsung to the top of the handset where it lines up alongside an Infrared blaster, handy for controlling your home entertainment systems.

Everyone I showed the Galaxy S6 Edge was impressed by the handset's premium appeal and lush curves - that was until they actually picked it up.

While the front of the S6 Edge is beautifully curved, the rear is as flat as a pancake, instantly making the handset feel a lot wider than it is.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review

Coming from the HTC One M9 which sports a lovely arching metal behind which nestles wonderfully into the palm, the S6 Edge never felt at home in my hand.

Things are made a little more unbearable thanks to the metal frame which runs round the circumference of the device.

On the front it doesn't sit flush with the curved Gorilla Glass 4, creating a rather annoying lip which you don't get on the Galaxy S6 , while on the back the edges of the frame are sharp and dig into your hand.

The Galaxy S6 Edge arrives alongside the Samsung Galaxy S6 , and the two handsets share pretty much identical specs. The S6 Edge is slightly thicker (7mm vs 6.8mm), slightly lighter (132g vs 138g) and packs an ever so slightly bigger battery (2600mAh vs 2550mAh), but that's it.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review

The glossy glass rear offers little in the way of grip, which made me tighten my grasp on the handset, resulting in the frame digging into my palm more.

It's never going to draw blood, and I wasn't exactly in pain, but the S6 Edge is uncomfortable to hold for extended periods.

Had Samsung repeated the curved design of the front on the rear the Galaxy S6 Edge would sit a lot better in the hand. It may make it slightly thicker, but that would mean a bigger battery and no camera protrusion - which in my book would be good things.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review

Sticking with the back and I have to say I'm a little disappointed. For all the good things I can say about how the Galaxy S6 Edge looks front-on, it all seems to be undone by a sloppily implemented rear.

True, you don't spend much time looking at the back of your smartphone, but the rear of the Galaxy S6 Edge looks like it was a bit of an afterthought.

I'm all for minimalism, but the flat, blank rear does nothing to ignite the senses and the bulky camera lens rearing its ugly head from the S6 Edge is a rather unattractive sight.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is available in white, black, gold and green - and the latter three reveal just how much of a fingerprint magnet it is.

There is some evidence of this on the white model when you turn the screen off, but the other colors reveal the full effect of the finger smudges - front and back.

In short, you'll find yourself cleaning your Galaxy S6 Edge regularly if you don't want your greasy paw prints on show.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review

Samsung's iconic home button is retained on both the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, but it's been updated with a vastly improved fingerprint scanner (more on that later) and a sturdier construction.

This makes it feel more premium and resilient, while the touch sensitive 'back' and 'multi-tasking' keys flank it, illuminating only when required.

The design of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is very good and a huge leap forward from the Galaxy S5 and even the Galaxy Note Edge .

The futuristic premium look and feel helps to justify its lofty price tag a little more, but a number of niggles detract from the overall experience.

Following the poor reception of the  Galaxy S5 , Samsung brought two Galaxy S series flagships to the table: the Galaxy S6  and the Galaxy S6 Edge, which showcased an all-new curved display. The demand for the Galaxy S6 Edge has been high, but is Samsung's flagship all it's cracked up to be? Find out in our Galaxy S6 Edge review.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge release date and price

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge release date was April 10 2015, and the Galaxy S6 Edge price is around US$580. At the time of its release, the S6 Edge cost US$800 off-contract.

androidpit Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge plus 2

While these prices are considerably high, it's important to note that with this device, Samsung has set the bar for premium smartphones in 2015 – and perhaps even started a revolution – with its clever innovation. Much like in 2011 when Samsung introduced the term 'phablet' with the Galaxy Note, it's entirely possible that the S6 Edge is the beginning of a new smartphone trend.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge design and build quality

The Galaxy S6 Edge is one sleek machine. It has the glass and metal finish that many have been crying out for from Samsung, the first time that the manufacturer has used these materials on a high-end smartphone. It's slim, sophisticated and surprisingly lightweight.

  • Galaxy S6 vs Galaxy S6 Edge
  • Galaxy S6 Edge vs Galaxy S6 edge+

android samsung galaxy s6 edge test image review 11

The side-panels of the Galaxy S6 Edge are narrow and slim, making it feel slightly sharp. After using it for several weeks, we can't say that the design got any more comfortable to hold. This seems to be the current price to pay for a dual-edged screen though.

android samsung galaxy s6 edge test review picture 10

The dedicated volume buttons are located at the top of the left edge, and the lock/power button is just above the middle of the device on the right-hand side. The button placement is well-suited to right- or left-handers, but your index finger might naturally sit a little higher than the lock/power button if you're holding the S6 Edge in your left, and your thumb will be a little higher up when holding it in your right.

It feels slightly awkward to have to slide down to access the power button  every time you unlock the phone, but it's not uncomfortable, as such.

android samsung galaxy s6 edge test image review 02

In daily use, the smartphone can be held and operated in one hand without any problems, and it has a strong grip. Maybe too strong – the rear glass will quickly become masked in fingerprints. Still, this is preferable to a device that slips out of the hand too easily.

android samsung galaxy s6 edge test image review 04

The design of the Galaxy S6 Edge does favor style over comfort. It's beautifully thin, but this means that it's not an especially pleasing device to hold. How much this matters will depend on your personal taste; it's certainly not a deal breaker. I'd predict that the majority of those who purchase an S6 Edge will never complain about its thin sides.

What people might complain about, however, is the lack of removable battery and microSD card slot. Samsung has done away with these features on both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, but despite a mass of complaints, the lack of expandable storage and removable battery doesn't seem so significant to us. There are plenty of online storage options available to users now, and Samsung has included some excellent charging solutions to pacify removable battery fans (more on this later).

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge display

The Galaxy S6 Edge has one of the highest resolution displays that can currently be found on an Android device, and it’s one of the best we’ve ever seen. The display comes in at 5.1 inches, similar to that of the Galaxy S6, and it's loaded with pixels; picking them out individually is near-impossible.

The screen technology is super AMOLED, which Samsung has been using since the Galaxy S, and it has a QHD (1,440 x 2,560 pixels) resolution. The Galaxy S5, by comparison, has a Full HD (1,080 x 1,920 pixels) display.

samsung galaxy s6 edge people

The biggest thing that sets the Galaxy S6 Edge apart from other devices is, of course, the sloping sides of its screen. These sloping sides provide additional functionality, but also work to great when watching videos. It's not 3D, but it somehow gives videos a more "energetic" feel that you don't get with other smartphones.

android samsung galaxy s6 edge test image review 09

The S6 Edge displays houses around 577 pixels per inch. This is an impressive number, and the Edge has an impressive screen tone to boot. If you find it too garish, however, it is possible to change the contrasts with four pre-set options (adaptive, cinema, photo and basic).

androidpit galaxy s6 screen mode

The S6 Edge is protected by Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and the back. The fourth generation of Corning's glass improves display durability by an estimated 80 percent compared with conventional glass on other smartphones and tablets.

The screen is a joy to look at; it's extremely detailed and has rich color and contrast. It is hard to avoid some glare from the sloping sides, but this is a small complaint, and the subtle 'wipe' animation when you lock the device is an elegant overtone. In terms of screen responsiveness, taps and swipes on the display are interpreted almost instantly by the S6 Edge. It's a real gem.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge special features

Among the standout features of the S6 Edge is the fingerprint scanner which can be accessed in lock screen settings.  You can configure multiple fingerprints to unlock your device, as well as adding a backup password to use in case the fingerprint scanner malfunctions. Not only can your fingerprint be used to unlock your device, you can also connect to the Web, check your Samsung account, or make a payment with Paypal.

Some argue that the fingerprint reader greatly enhances security, but we're not sold on this. What's more, you must place your finger at a specific point on the home button in order for it to be recognized, and it occasionally doesn't work. It’s a good idea, but it's not 100 percent perfect yet.

androidpit galaxy s6 edge finger lock

The Galaxy S6 Edge also incorporates a heart-rate monitor, just like the S5 did. You can find it within the S Health app, and it  measures your heart rate using a sensor below the flash on the rear of the camera.

When you hold your finger against it, a red light is displayed while it monitors your heart rate. It's more consistent than the previous iteration on the Galaxy S5, and is a neat function for anybody concerned with maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge software

The S6 Edge arrives with Android 5.0.2 and Samsung's TouchWiz UI, but it's now been upgraded to Android 5.1.1. It's expected to get Android Marshmallow , but Samsung hasn't officially confirmed this.

Samsung's latest user-interface provides the freedom to uninstall most of its pre-installed applications, except those that are crucial to the system, which is a welcome change from typically bloatware-filled Samsung devices.

androidpit galaxy s6 edge about device

With the curved edges, Samsung has introduced a brand new concept to the smartphone market, but what use do they have, besides looking good?

First up, People Edge. This feature lets you configure up to five favorite contacts which can be assigned to a side of the screen. Swiping in from the side of the screen will bring these favorite contacts into view, where you can easily SMS or email them.

Samsung Galaxy function s6 edge contacts

The second feature, Edge Lighting, works in combination with the first. When your phone is on its stomach, the side screen will project a color onto the surface it rests on when one of your favorite contacts calls you. Because each of your favorite contacts has been assigned their own color, you can see who is contacting you at a glance.

It's a fantastic USP because it produces such a strong visual effect, making it excellent for Samsung's marketing campaign. For the end-user, though, the novelty quickly wears off.

samsung galaxy s6 edge notification

Samsung's Information Stream is more interesting. This feature is activated by sliding your finger along the screen edge. The edge will then display information such as the current temperature, time, date, news feeds and even Twitter updates. Samsung's intention is for it to be used at night (or early morning) while the device is lying flat on a bedside table; it means you can see useful information without having to pick up the handset.

This seems like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, though. I'd rather pick up my phone and use if properly than perform a slide motion gesture to access to some limited functions. Information Stream just isn't all that relevant.

samsung galaxy s6 edge missed calls

There are many other features to be found with the new version of TouchWiz, on top of those relating to the side display. TouchWiz now provides access to a wide range of customization options, as well as all-new themes, while Download Booster makes a welcome return.

Located in the additional connection settings, Download Booster combines Wi-Fi and LTE networks for faster download speeds for files larger than 30 MB. This feature isn’t new, but it’s still excellent.

androidpit galaxy s6 edge download booster

There is also a new gesture command, which enables you to launch the camera by tapping twice on the home button. It’s convenient, super fast, and reduces the chances of you missing a perfect photo opportunity because you were waiting for your camera app to launch. It's a fantastic idea, which has been perfectly implemented.

Sadly, Samsung has not followed LG's lead with a "knock on" effect, in which you can wake the screen by tapping on it twice . If you've never had a phone with this function before, you probably won't mind, but if you have, you'll miss it.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge performance

The performance dished out by the Galaxy S6 Edge is generally very impressive. During our first few weeks with the device we noted how Samsung's UI would stutter from time to time, but a few updates later, it seems that this has now been addressed.

When we discuss performance, this concerns all of the device components including the touch screen, processor, graphics chip, RAM, internal memory, cameras and connectivity.

android samsung galaxy s6 edge AnTuTu benchmark Geekbench March 01

After splitting with Qualcomm, reportedly over fears that the Snapdragon 810 chipset was overheating in some devices, Samsung decided to use its own Exynos 7420 processor for the S6 Edge release in the west. Whether this was a good decision or not, I'm pleased to report that the S6 Edge suffered no overheating issues throughout my time with the device, even after running an intensive performance test for 30 minutes.

androidpit Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge plus 5

The graphical capability of the Galaxy S6 Edge is outstanding, the only disappointment is that  few apps and games can make full use of such power yet.

With powerful components together and well-optimized software, the S6 Edge is one of the fastest devices around. Its Antutu benchmark results provided an average of 61,493, which is a very respectable score. To provide some context, in our independent tests, the S6 Edge+ achieved an average score of 69,456, the Nexus 6P came out with 52,845, and the Galaxy S5 averaged 44,095 when running Android Lollipop.

What this means is that the Galaxy S6 Edge is a capable handset and will be for the next few years. Check out our fastest Android phones article for further insights into current flagship performance.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge audio

When confronted with a high-end smartphone worth more than 800 dollars, I expected superior audio quality. With only a single speaker for music playback, the Galaxy S6 Edge audio is substandard compared with other modern flagships, although  Samsung has introduced a Sound quality and effects section to try to make up for what it lacks in hardware.

Within this menu there are three options, the first of which is called Adapt Sound, which allows you to configure a personal sound setting for when you make calls, listen to music or watch videos.

androidpit galaxy s6 edge sound settings

The second option is SoundAlive+, which simulates a surround sound effect, and the third is Tube Amp, which recreates the warm tone of a tube amplifier. It’s an good package of sound enhancements for use with headphones, but none of them add anything substantial to the single speaker playback.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge camera

Both the rear and front cameras on the Galaxy S6 Edge are best-in-class. Samsung can always be relied upon to deliver on its flagship smartphone displays and cameras, and once again it proves itself in the photography stakes with truly outstanding image quality.

android samsung galaxy s6 edge test image review 13

The rear camera has approximately 16 million pixels, meaning it can take photos with up to 5,312 x 2,988 pixels in 16:9 ratio. On the video side, you can choose any resolution from VGA (640 x 480) up to UHD (3840 x 2160). There are a number of devices out there right now that are capable of the same raw numbers, and have been since last year. It's Samsung's image processing software that sets this handset apart.

AndroidPIT Galaxy S6 camera macro rust

Samsung has optimized its own image processing technology to ensure that photos and videos taken in dark environments look better than ever before. The image quality is always lower at night than during the day, but low-light photos taken with Samsung's S6 and S6 Edge show significantly less noise than the competition.

20150324 210847

The camera installed on the front is a 5 MP snapper, capable of taking pictures up to 2,592 x 1,944 pixels in 4:3 aspect ratio. Here once again the pictures are of an excellent quality. Video calling in Hangouts or Skype looks great, as do selfies.

androidpit galaxy s6 edge selfie

It was recently confirmed that  not all Galaxy S6 Edge models use the same camera , but whether you end up with the Sony IMX240 image sensor or the Samsung ISOCELL equivalent, it's still possible to capture stunning photos and videos both indoors and outdoors. Check out  video below for an explanation of some of the Galaxy S6's camera features – the same can be found on the S6 Edge.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge battery

The Galaxy S6 Edge's glorious QHD display and lightning fast processor come at a price: the Edge can't survive for more than a day under intensive use. This is somewhat unsurprising given that this could be the best display currently on the platform, and the display is where most of the battery life is used up. Still, be prepared to charge the Galaxy S6 Edge often.

androidpit galaxy s6 edge battery

Thankfully, Samsung has introduced some solutions to soften the blow of quickly diminishing battery life. The first is a quick-charge function provided by the Samsung charger, which enables you to charge the S6 Edge to 100 percent battery life in about an hour.

This is an outstanding feature and should be a regular fixture on every smartphone in the future. While it's useless if you don't have access to a power source, the chances are most people will encounter one at least once within a 24-hour period, and the ability to significantly top up your phone in just 10 or 15 minutes is wonderful.

carregador rapido galaxy s6 adaptador

The second feature is the ability to charge the device wirelessly with an optional Qi charger. This doesn't charge the S6 Edge as quickly as the regular charger does, but it makes things a little more convenient. Neither of these solutions affect how battery life is consumed, necessarily, just how it is recovered.

Beyond the charging features, it is possible to extend the Galaxy S6 Edge’s battery life with two power saving modes. The first can limit processor performance, frame rate, screen brightness, and device vibration to add minutes, or even hours of battery.

The second, Ultra Power Saving mode, can double or even triple the battery life. It turns your device to grayscale and limits the number of usable applications, effectively reducing your device to minimum processing. The features that remain are: Phone, Message (SMS), Internet, Calculator, Voice Recorder, Facebook, Google+, Clock, Notepad, Twitter and WhatsApp. Here you can expect two days of battery, but it comes at the cost of a significant reduction in functionality.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge technical specifications

Final verdict.

With the Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung has proven it is capable of the innovation that many thought it lacked. This smartphone opens up unexplored horizons and bring new ideas to the market, which has long since revolved around iteration rather than revolution.

Samsung has cut the fat from its typically bloated interface, presenting an airy UI with no unnecessary additions. What's more, the S6 Edge has introduced inventive features such as lightning-fast charging and a quick-launch camera gesture, as well as delivering on the essentials with outstanding performance, a sensational display and probably the best smartphone camera on the market.

Samsung has taken a big risk introducing the curvy S6 Edge, but I think that it could be the start of a whole new line of smartphones – from Samsung, and other manufacturers alike. The Edge functions might not set the world on fire right now, but we can't wait to see how this technology can be developed in future.

Samsung are getting better and better. It's a pity that they have to compete with Apple and don't have the freedom to go more in a more inovative direction :)

Ignore the review and stay away from this phone guys.... I have it 2 months and it is problem after problem, I had an S4 and it was a far more reliable phone, this S6 is muck...

reviewers seem a little brain washed when talking about this phone? screen is alright but no better than any other top end phone, edges serve no real purpose, sound is mediocre to say the least, you say the camera is brilliant? but when you took a photo of a moving object it was blurd, battery is bad really it's alright having fast charge but it's no good if your always charging it? very fragile front and back so definitely need a case, and you pay a very expensive price for this?

When you get a new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, follow this video and transfer data from any old smartphones to the Galaxy S6 Edge and S6 Edge + fb.com/KSOFT.CC/videos/725839117521403/

as a long time samsung phone user, s2, s3, note 2 , 3 and 4, i got to the first paragraph where it says "no removable battery" and "no sd card" slot and thats it, i wont be buying one. id just read the same for the note 5 and was hoping that the galaxy 6 would be different, but no dice. its a shame you wrote so much of an article because the rest of it is wasted. what a shame, looks like samsung are doing a nokia. so - where to look for a replacement for my note 4? any ideas anyone?

why am I so fixed on Galaxy,Android & Samsung? I dont know. Family n friends said get an iphone. No I enjoy the freedom Im android feel i get. This phone is really nice. I changed the launcher to a smart pro 2 & added my own wallpaper. I have 2 cases that just fit the back providing a feww mm ridge higher than the front glass. This phone is great, I have been with Galaxy for 6 yrs now. Happy happy happy.

Picked the S6 edge a little over two weeks ago. It's pretty damn good. Possibly great! Amazing screen, and I mean jaw-dropping resolution. Watching as well as taking video in 4k is wicked! Like the edges and the various uses for them. This phone is fast, really fast. Like the gorilla glass 4 too. It's a sturdy, attractive well built phone. The camera is mind-blowing too. Can't say enough. Get this phon! If you're an android fan look no further. I tested it against my sons iPhone 6s and it blew it away at every level. 5 out of 5!

What about the Sprint pricing, or is Sprint simply not carrying this phone?

Had an S4 great phone, As the S6 has no removable battery, no micro sd slot. Will look elsewhere this time.

I want to know since I have heard that the curve screen is just a gimmick unlike Note Edge. So can someone who review this phone clarify this feature? I already know that the curves screen on both side does not powered on independently from the main screen. Or that it does not act like two independent screen like Note Edge. But what about notification and other app that will make this curves useful??

Eric D8

Yes, you can set the edges to display the same information that you normally see at the top of your phone.

Only one side can be set to display info-you choose left or right. You activate it by swiping your finger back and forth on the edge. You can choose from a set of info to be displayed-weather, rss feed, etc. You scroll through the info by flicking it up or down.

Can some one buy this beauty for me ?

Incredible device

The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are elegant in design and top notch in software and performance these are the GOLD STANDARD headsets till the #Note5 and #NoteEdge2 or #Note5Edge. I am definitely proud of Samsung and will be buying on April 10th to add to my Galaxy Note 3, Note4, and GearS.

I think you should have posted this to twitter instead, no need for the hash tags. And Samsung products are hardly "gold standard" They don't even come close to it, get rid of touchwiz and they may have a chance. Also the glass back will end up like 95% of iPhone 4 and 4s'. Give me wood or leather back any day.

Yep, I'm right there with you. Gonna have to trade in my M8, which is a wonderful phone. I'm going to be after the blue-black edge 128 GB. I'm giving up my beloved boom-sound speakers for the mind blowing display on the S6 Edge.

No removable storage, for me its a no no. The HTC M9 looks interesting and it has an SD card slot

You can get a power case with a SD card slot like Otterbox, Nexpaq or I-blades

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge review

The galaxy s6 edge fails to match the performance of its twin, the standard galaxy s6.

Jeffrey Van Camp

“The curved screen on the Galaxy S6 Edge looks beautiful but harms the experience. We highly recommend a standard Galaxy S6.”
  • Elegant and premium build
  • Gorgeous display
  • Better camera features and performance
  • Much-improved fingerprint reader
  • Quick charging
  • Supports both wireless charging standards
  • Uncomfortable to hold
  • Curved screen offers no value
  • Worse battery life than standard S6
  • No longer waterproof
  • Non-removable battery
  • No memory expansion
  • Gets noticeably hot when pushed
  • Tinny speaker sound

We’ve been using the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge for a few months now, on and off. These devices represent a big turning point for Samsung, which has struggled to maintain its lead as the top Android phone maker in the last two years. Since we never did a proper review of the S6 Edge, it’s time to dive in. Though both phones are identical on the inside, the curved screen of the Edge makes a surprising difference in the experience. While we believe the Galaxy S6 is one of the best Android phones of 2015, the Edge has a few issues you should know about.

The below review shares some text with our full Galaxy S6 review , but we’ve added context for those of you considering the curvier version of Samsung’s flagship phone.

Galaxy S6 vs. Galaxy S5

Best galaxy s6 edge cases, galaxy s6 vs. htc one m9, look ma, no plastic.

The Galaxy S6 Edge (and standard S6) represent a sea change in Samsung’s design philosophy from previous years. Gone is the plastic that was signature to the Galaxy line, never truly looking refined with its faux leather and Band-Aid dimples, among other cues. This time, it’s Gorilla Glass 4 on both the front and back — an aesthetic choice with a number of consequences.

  • 2. This is Samsung’s S6 Edge and its curved display

Metal fuses the two together along the edges, making room for the antennas at the top and bottom. The speaker is now at the bottom instead of the back, along with the Micro USB port. They’re joined by the headphone jack, which used to be at the top on the GS5. A microphone and IR blaster are at the top. Volume buttons (now separated instead of being together) are on the left, with the power button on the right. The SIM card slot lies just below.

Samsung had to sacrifice certain physical attributes to make this setup work. Unlike its predecessor, neither of the two Galaxy S6 phones are waterproof, and you can’t remove or replace the battery. There’s also no MicroSD card slot to expand on the internal storage. It’s hardly a surprise that the company would scrap 16GB versions and go with 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB models to offset that, since it can charge us extra (as Apple does) for upgraded models.

The curved screen looks nice, but ruins the fun

The standard Galaxy S6 looks a lot like the iPhone 6, and we talk about that in our full review of it. The S6 Edge would share this problem, if it weren’t for the large curved edges on both sides. This makes the phone stand out, in a good way. Since getting our first S6 Edge months back, we’re still impressed when we watch the screen bend down over the edge.

The Edge may look better, but it isn’t as comfortable to hold.

But looking is what you do at a store and when you’re bragging to your friends. Sadly, actually using this curved screen isn’t as fun. The screen doesn’t bleed over enough to do anything functional. Samsung added a silly feature where if one of your friends calls, you can see the screen light up a particular color, but this isn’t a game changing feature by any stretch. Aside from showing it off, we’ve never really used the contact coloring feature much.

The big problem with the Edge is that the proprietary curved glass comes with sacrifices. This phone is more delicate than the standard Galaxy S6, and fixing the screen if it cracks won’t be as easy (or cheap) as a standard flat-screened phone. Battery life is also slightly worse than the standard S6 in our experience.

Most annoying is that the phone just isn’t as comfortable to hold as the regular S6, a device we highly recommend. The bend of the screen makes the actual holdable edges of the phone somewhat sharp and pointy, and the power/volume buttons feel as if they protrude more. Held side by side, there is no comparison: The Edge may look better, but it isn’t as comfortable.

Finally, we have had some issues where the side of our thumb or hand will accidentally touch the edge of the curved screen. This leads to some annoying moments and just doesn’t happen on a normal phone.

Under the hood

The Galaxy S6 Edge’s specs are an impressive mix, and the most noticeable among them is the processor. Samsung has opted to go it alone with its own Exynos 7420 64-bit octa-core chip (two quad-core chips running at 2.1GHz and 1.5GHz), rather than the Qualcomm chip seen in many competitors. This may have to do with assertions that the Snapdragon 810 chip is  prone to overheating . While the average user may not notice a difference in performance, the move may not be without some ramifications.

Having 3GB of RAM is great, considering the extra horsepower it’s supposed to complement. The same heart rate monitor introduced last year is back again in the same spot under the LED flash, though its placement can sometimes lead to smudging the rear lens as you feel for it.

The 5.1-inch Super AMOLED is the same size as its predecessor, except it gets a resolution bump to Quad HD (2,560 × 1,440 pixels), which gives it a density of 577 pixels per inch. Your eyes won’t be able to distinguish the millions of pixels packed into such a small frame, but suffice it to say, this is a gorgeous display and HD video looks fabulous on it.

It’s clear with the Galaxy S6 that Samsung is starting to better understand how to utilize its own software in relation to the fruits of Android. In an effort to reduce bloat (somewhat, at least), certain features are now treated as add-ons you can download separately from the Galaxy App Store if you want them. Indeed, one peek at the Motions and Gestures section under Settings exemplifies just how far Samsung has dialed things back in only two years. The result is a much cleaner interface that’s easier to navigate.

This phone won’t be mistaken for running stock (default) Android, but Samsung’s custom TouchWiz interface doesn’t cast as long a shadow this time around. It’s a classic case of addition by subtraction. There’s less “Samsung” on the home screen, but pulling down the notification pane will look immediately familiar to any Galaxy S owner. Swipe to the right and you get Flipboard, which you can now replace with a different newsfeed app per your preference. The Settings will also look familiar, with the same menu layout as last year.

The Home button has a rejigged fingerprint sensor that is a dramatic improvement from the horrid one used in the GS5. Instead of swiping down on the button, you now only need to touch it and you’re through. The training process is also well thought out. We had to apply our thumb 10 times in different angles to capture a fuller print, thereby increasing the accuracy anytime we unlocked the phone using it. The frustrating failure rate on the Galaxy S5 is gone. It’s now as natural as fingerprint unlocking with an iPhone 6 — a big accomplishment for Samsung.

Performance

There are performance caveats. First, the sole speaker at the bottom, while an improvement from before, is not up to par with other devices of its caliber. The distortion became readily apparent if you ramp up the volume on anything from a YouTube video to a phone call on speaker. Second, the phone got really toasty during intensive tasks. It doesn’t get hot enough to make it difficult to hold, and we haven’t noticed any resulting stutter or lag, but it is noticeably warm.

The Galaxy S6 has a much cleaner interface that’s easier to navigate.

Despite all that, there’s no questioning how fluid the overall feel of the software is. Android Lollipop acclimated well, making it easy to act on a notification by tapping it once and then unlocking with a fingerprint to bring it up. Streaming video from Plex or my local network attached storage drive was easy, and casting to a Chromecast gave us no real problems.

Everyday tasks like opening apps, Web browsing, video streaming, and music playback went smoothly.

The hardware and software tweaks are partially highlighted by what Samsung chose to do with the camera in this phone. A 16-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front-facing camera are fine on paper, but it’s the changes complementing them that help yield tangible results. The GS5’s camera was fine during the day, but suffered when shooting at night or in low light.

To remedy that, the rear f/1.9 aperture lens is wider and has optical image stabilization built-in. To help the cause, Samsung smartly made HDR automatic by default, allowing it to kick in when the sensor needs the boost to get a more composed shot. And to top it off, the camera can be launched quickly by double tapping the Home button, even when the phone is locked or asleep. It’s also ready to shoot in about a second — essential for quick snaps.

  • 2. Taken with the Galaxy S6

Kudos to Samsung for keeping shooting options practical and limited. The silly modes are gone, and the ones remaining make the most sense to keep. The Pro mode is sort of a mixed bag, though. It’s great that you can adjust ISO, white balance, metering and add effects, but the results don’t always jive with the choices you make. It would’ve been interesting if shutter speed was included, but even if it was, it’s not enough to put the mode over the top.

That being said, we’ve been generally pleased with the shots the phone takes. It’s definitely better in macro than the GS5, and low-light images were more detailed with better illumination and contrast. In many situations, it outperforms or matches the iPhone 6, as well. We can also say the same about shooting video, where 2K and 4K modes are available. You still have to exercise some caution when shooting in either of those because they incur huge file sizes, and without a memory card to save to, you would have to offload them quickly to a computer or cloud storage backup.

Battery life

The battery is really the key to the Galaxy S6. If it whittles down quickly, the phone’s features and performance hold less credence. The Galaxy S6 Edge actually has a smaller battery (2,600mAh) than the GS5 (2,800mAh), and is 50mAh larger than its twin, the standard Galaxy S6. In our experience, the battery life has been ever so slightly worse than the standard S6, but the difference has not been particularly noticeable. Both phones make no strides in battery performance.

Samsung flatly noted that it only went with the non-removable design because it was confident the battery could stand up on its own. Well, that confidence has a backup plan, just in case. The Quick Charger that comes in the box with the phone can give you four hours of use (or two hours of HD streaming) from a fast 10-minute charge. Samsung says it can charge from empty to full in only 80 minutes.

The second part of that plan is wireless charging support for both the Qi and PMA (Power Matters Alliance) standards. This is the first smartphone to have dual compatibility, so it’s a big deal if you own a wireless charger. I tried to charge it on an old Powermat charger (which used PMA technology) but it didn’t work. It worked like a charm on a Qi pad, however. When trying the circular pad that Samsung sells, we had very limited success. Because of the slippery glass back, the S6 and S6 Edge can easily slide or be knocked off of the charger, ending charge sessions prematurely. Wires do have some value, it seems.

Charging options aside, the battery’s overall performance didn’t impress us, and was worse than the standard Galaxy S6. The battery continually drained faster than we anticipated and we have never ended a day with more than 30 percent battery life. Often, it hovers around 15 percent. Sadly, this isn’t uncommon for the iPhone 6 and many other phones, either. 2015 is not a good year for batteries.

The Galaxy S6 Edge does not have an awful battery, but it’s slightly worse than the standard S6, and we recommend you take that into consideration. Every mAh counts.

The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are both absolutely gorgeous phones. They borrow a lot of design traits from the iPhone line, and that’s fantastic, because the iPhone is the most beautiful phone out there. But of the two, we do not recommend the Galaxy S6 Edge.

The S6 Edge gets worse battery life than its sibling, and is far less comfortable to hold and use. The standard S6 is one of the most comfortable phones we’ve ever held, but its admittedly prettier sibling just doesn’t have the same depth of character.

There is no added benefit to a curved screen outside of looking at it, and Samsung’s half-baked specialty features won’t entertain you for long. The Galaxy S6 is an amazing device. Go ahead and play with the Galaxy S6 Edge and marvel at its beauty in the store, but when it’s time to buy, put it down and purchase the standard S6 (or a LG G4 if prices are right). You won’t be sorry.

It’s been three years since we’ve given a phone in the Samsung Galaxy S family five stars, but after just a few minutes with the Galaxy S6 Edge, we already get the feeling that’s about to change.

We weren’t always so sure. When we first heard about the Edge, we were sceptical. Almost identical to the Galaxy S6 in terms of spec, with just its curved screen separating them, was their really any point to it?

That was before we saw it. The S6 Edge really is something you have to pick up and feel in your hand to really appreciate. As innovative as it is desirable, this is the phone we’ve been waiting for from Samsung, and a phone that’s only impressed us the longer we’ve spent with it.

galaxy s 6 edge

There’s no doubt that the S6 Edge is a premium handset – unabashedly so, and with a price tag to match. It follows the lead of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 Edge, but takes it one step further, with a screen that wraps around both vertical edges of the phone, rather than just one.

This makes it feel even slimmer than it is, with the trade off that its edges feel slightly sharp in the hand, compared to the smooth edges of its straight-laced sibling. Whether this bothers you will be personal preference – we certainly didn’t find it uncomfortable, and in fact found it easier to grip.

In a long-awaited first for the Galaxy S range, the S6 Edge ditches the plastic body in exchange for one with a metal frame and Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and back.

The result is a much higher-quality look and feel, but a handset that is more prone to fingerprint smudges.

It’s also now a unibody design, which means power users lose the ability to swap out the battery – and Samsung has also nixed the ability to expand the storage via microSD.

Instead it now offers iPhone-like built-in storage options of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB. While the ability to swap out your battery won’t be a feature missed by the majority of users, the loss of the microSD card slot probably will, and it’s a shame to see Samsung make a compromise on such a key feature.

galaxy s 6 edge

All is forgiven with one glance at the S6 Edge’s screen though. Curved edges aside, it’s a gorgeous 5.1in Super AMOLED Quad HD (2560 x 1440) display with 577ppi – some 77 per cent more pixels than the Galaxy S5 .

Of course, those curves can’t be ignored for too long, and it’s those that make the S6 Edge one of the best-looking phones on the market.

There’s little more reason to them than that – sure there are a few software tweaks that set it apart from the standard S6 (more on those later), but the primary reason you’d choose the S6 Edge’s more curvaceous outline is because it looks so good.

Those curves really add something to a movie watching experience too. It’s almost entirely bezel free, and as the image spills over the edges, it only helps make for a more immersive experience.

galaxy s 6 edge

As for the screen itself, with a Quad HD display and more pixels per inch than most handsets on the market, there’s no surprise that it’s a beauty. Pictures are crisp and full of detail, with outlines sharp and defined.

The AMOLED display means viewing angles aren’t the best, and colours can look a little washed out off axis, but when viewed straight on, you’ll find them punchy and bright.

You’ll still get the most natural hues from the likes of the iPhone 6 , but the S6 Edge is far from overdone, plus you have a handful of viewing modes that help you choose a colour palette to suit your preference.

Where the AMOLED screen falls down a touch on viewing angles, it comes into its own on contrast. The S6 Edge offers seriously deep blacks alongside bright whites that have the ability to punch through dark scenes, while still maintaining detail levels. The whites can have a slightly bluey tinge to them, but it’s not something we find overly noticeable during normal viewing.

galaxy s 6 edge

The Galaxy S6 Edge offers music playback up to 24-bit/192kHz. High-res tracks are handily tagged up with a UHQ logo and their bitrate, with a wide range of formats accepted including FLAC and WAV.

High-res tracks and Spotify streams alike are filled with punch and attack, timing well and offering plenty of detail across the frequency range. It’s a refined sound, leaner in tone to that on the iPhone 6, but one that is also dynamic and tonally balanced.

Higher res tracks have a touch more subtlety to instruments, and an increased sense of space around big orchestral tracks, though Sony’s Xperia Z3 still delivers vocals with a touch more expression.

This is easily one of the best sounding Samsung phones we’ve ever heard, delivering a thoroughly enjoyable listen no matter the track or genre.

Performance

galaxy s 6 edge

The S6 Edge packs Samsung’s own 64-bit octa-core Exynos processor that promises a performance 20 per cent faster and 35 per cent more efficient than that of the already pretty nippy Note 4 . There’s also 3GB of ultra-fast RAM to help keep things moving along without delay.

The result is a slick performance that barely stutters even when fed the most graphic-intensive games we could throw at it. Samsung’s Touchwiz interface could still be a touch lighter, but there’s been plenty done in an attempt to slim it down, including a cleaner design across the board and less bloatware overrunning the app tray.

Even better, the Samsung apps that are installed can now be disabled, removing them from view and keeping them out of your way should you wish (though not deleting them entirely).

The edges have a few tricks of their own built into the interface, but they don’t really add much to the experience. You can have one interactive edge; once you’ve picked which side you want to use, you can build five favourite contacts to sit in a menu that is opened by swiping from that side.

galaxy s 6 edge

These contacts each have a colour attached to them (all customisable), and the S6 Edge will glow that colour when that person calls – but only if the handset is lying face down. It’s rather specific and we’re not sure how often it would be used, though the favourite contacts menu is quite handy.

Another feature is Information Stream. With this, you can swipe a finger up and down the edge while the screen is locked to check time, weather, notifications and a handful of other updates on a slim ticker-style scrolling wheel.

The idea is to avoid lighting up that powerful screen every time you want to check your notifications – but the swiping motion was often so temperamental in loading Information Stream that we barely found ourselves using it.

Hopefully Samsung can work on this and find ways of making the edges of the S6 Edge more than just a pretty face.

Battery life

galaxy s 6 edge

Waterproofing has been taken off the menu with the S6 Edge. This year, the focus falls on battery life and charging.

Wireless charging is built in to the handset, with quick recharge times also on the menu. Samsung’s quick-charge plug comes as standard, and as you’d expect, we see a boost in charging with it compared to a standard charger, particularly when charging from flat.

Samsung says you’ll get around four hours of everyday use with just 10 minutes of charge. Plug it in with the battery flat and you’ll be able to turn the handset on immediately, with our sample jumping to 12 per cent in 10 minutes.

This speedy charging makes most impact when the battery is low, levelling out a little as it gets more full – but it’s a handy feature all the same. However despite this, we can’t help but want a little more from its battery life, particularly after the strong performances of some of 2014’s handsets.

With its bright, powerful screen, the S6 Edge struggles to make it through a full day without crying out for a charger, managing around 10 and a half hours on our battery run-down test, looping a 720p video on 50 per cent brightness.

Samsung’s power-saving modes are good and worth trying out if you’re ever stuck. The ultra power-saving mode is really impressive in its ability to eke out hours of (limited) use from just a few per cent of battery life remaining.

galaxy s 6 edge

The fingerprint sensor and heart rate monitor from the S5 return on the S6 Edge, with the former being hugely improved over its predecessor.

Previously you had to make a rather awkward swiping motion over the home button to have your fingerprint read. It’s now much easier, with you simply resting your finger over the top, as you do on the iPhone.

We don’t find it to be quite as foolproof as Apple’s scanner when it comes to absolute accuracy, but it’s close, and makes fingerprint unlocking a real option on a Samsung device for the first time ever.

galaxy s 6 edge

The main camera on the Galaxy S6 Edge packs the same 16MP sensor as the S5, but this time features an improved f/1.9 aperture for better low-light shots.

This f/1.9 aperture has also made its way on to the 5MP front-facing snapper too, and promises a 43 per cent increase in pixel size – very important for grabbing more light in badly lit situations.

Not just this but the camera is now really quick to launch too, with a double tap on the home button opening the camera app in a seriously snappy 0.7 seconds.

Like the rest of the interface, the whole camera experience has been tidied up and decluttered. The auto mode will be fine for most people, but those looking for a little more creative control might prefer the Pro mode, which gives you the ability to tweak exposure, ISO, white balace and the like.

galaxy s 6 edge

Last year’s Selective Focus returns here, offering you the ability to achieve a DSLR-like depth of field to your pictures and achieving much better results than the HTC One M9 ’s similar mode. Shots are believable, with the subject in the foreground sharp and in focus, while the background is artfully blurred (or vice versa if you prefer).

Used outside in good light, the S6 Edge’s camera is up there as one of the best, capturing stacks of fine detail, even on zoomed in shots, and doing an excellent job with colour reproduction.

Autofocus is fast and accurate and the built-in optical image stabilisation (OIS) ensures shots are sharp and blur-free, even in low-light situations.

galaxy s 6 edge

Combine its OIS capabilities with the f/1.9 lens and the S6 Edge doesn’t do a bad job in low light at all, though autofocus might need a bit of a helping hand to ensure it’s concentrated on the right thing.

The automatic HDR mode also does a grand job in tricky outdoor lighting situations, convincingly lifting detail from shadows without overblowing lighter areas of the image.

On the video side of things, you can capture Full HD footage with optical image stabiliation, or 4K video without it, while the slow-motion and fast-motion options will only record in a maximum of 720p.

The lack of OIS for 4K video can lead to slightly shaky handheld footage, and we preferred to take the drop in resolution for a steadier shot.

With the release of the S6 Edge, Samsung has proven that it is once more back on its A game, producing a phone that offers a stunning design alongside a stonking performance.

There is the small matter of the price, though. At £700 for the 32GB version, it’s around £100 more expensive than the regular S6, for an experience that is almost identical. If the curved screen isn’t a draw for you, then the S6 may well be a better option.

However, it is the screen here that makes the S6 Edge feel so special – and it’s a feeling we think could make more people plump for the Edge than Samsung might have first thought.

It’s not without its flaws of course – we’d like a stronger battery life and a microSD card slot, but its overall performance helps us to forget those.

We know the S6 Edge is Samsung simply showing off what it can do, but who can complain when it can do things like this. It’s a truly excellent handset that takes Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S phone range comfortably back to five-star glory.

15 special edition smartphones you wish you could buy.

From Transformers and Star Wars to Porsche and the Olympic Games

Smartphones are better than ever but aren't always as exciting as they used to be. One thing that helps fight the onset of boredom is the special-edition phone. Over the years, manufacturers have collaborated with other brands to create limited-edition phones that can look wildly different from the original phone, with custom finishes, software, and accessories. Sadly, many of these devices are only sold in specific regions, locking them away from large parts of the fan base. There is more to come, with HMD announcing it is working on a Barbie-branded flip phone . So, as we look forward to seeing how that device turns out, let's recap some of the best special edition phones to exist so far.

Transformers

Redmagic 7, 7 pro, 8 pro plus, 8s pro plus..

The Transformers make up approximately 75% of my overall personality, so these phones are obviously at the top of my themed list. Redmagic made four Transformers edition phones. The Redmagic 7 was based on the Bayverse (Michael Bay universe) Megatron, the 7 Pro was based on the Bayverse Optimus Prime, and the 8 Pro Plus and 8S Pro Plus referenced the newer 80s-inspired designs for Optimus Prime and Bumblebee, respectively, as seen in the Bumblebee movie.

These phones went above and beyond to make a Transformers fan feel special. Many themed phones come with the same generic accessories as the regular device, but not here. Redmagic included Transformers-branded cases, superfast chargers, and an air cooler for gaming performance. Some even offered badges and pins. Even the software was skinned with a Cybertronian theme, and there were plenty of character-focused wallpapers.

Sharp Star Wars Phone, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+

Merchandising is one of the things that made Star Wars so culturally important. The only reason we got more than one film was because George Lucas didn't have to share the profits from Star Wars toys with the studio, enabling him to use that money to pay the cast and crew, firmly establish ILM (Industrial Lights and Magic), and make more films. It makes sense, then, that Star Wars has had some limited-edition smartphones, and they are fantastic.

The first is the Sharp Star Wars phone that came in a light side and dark side edition. It coincided with the release of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, my favorite entry into the franchise. These two smartphones featured a stunning glass back that would shimmer between two colors as the light hit them. The dark side would shift between red and black, while the light side phone would switch between white and pale blue. The software was also skinned with Star Wars icons and wallpapers. The accessories were a lot of fun, too. Each came with a figurine collection featuring the Rebel Alliance U-Wing Support Craft, Darth Vader, a Death Trooper, a Coastal Defender Stormtrooper, and K2SO.

Next, there's Samsung's Galaxy Note 10+ Star Wars Edition. This phone had the misfortune of being tied to The Rise Of Skywalker, but we won't hold that against it. This Note 10+ was black with a metallic red ring around the cameras and a vibrant red S Pen. Its back panel had the First Order logo etched into the middle, with the Star Wars logo beneath that. The box also included a leather case with Kylo Ren's embossed side profile, a collectible metal card featuring Ren, and a pair of Samsung's original Galaxy Buds repainted with the same black and red theme.

Galaxy S6 Edge, S7 Edge, OnePlus 6

Samsung appears again here with the Iron Man Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S7 Edge Injustice Edition. The S6 came in red and gold, with an Iron Man helmet etched into the rear glass and a theme over Samsung's software skin. In the box, the standard accessories were the same as usual, but there was also a wireless charger that looked like Tony Stark's Arc Reactor, my favorite part of this phone. The Injustice Edition was similar, with an all-black design that featured a gold bat symbol on the back and a Batman software theme. The phone also had a Batman case and a black Galaxy Gear VR headset.

Next is the OnePlus 6 Infinity War Edition. This phone was stunning, and I appreciate its subtlety. The rear glass was etched with a carbon fiber print, and the OnePlus logo, Avengers logo, and alert slider were gold, like Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet. The box included a gold-painted metal medallion, an Infinity War card, and an Iron Man case.

OnePlus 7, Honor Magic V2 RSR

There have been many car-branded phones dating back to the early 2000s, but most of them were, to be frank, gaudy. The two I am highlighting are beautifully designed and deserve attention. The first is the OnePlus 7T McLaren, easily my favorite. The black glass exterior had a Damascus steel print and was accented by McLaren's signature orange around the cameras and back panel. OnePlus even used this orange for the charging cable over its usual bright red.

Secondly, there's the Honor Magic V2 RSR Porsche Design. That name might be a mouthful, but we'll forgive that. The phone was inspired by the Porsche 911, with the body made of the same fiberglass Porsche uses in its cars and a crease down the back panel inspired by the current generation 911. Porsche's original Agate Grey paint rounds out the design.

OnePlus Ace 2

OnePlus has made 5 Genshin phones over the years. The OnePlus 9RT, Ace Pro, Ace 2, Ace 2 Pro, and 12R have all had Genshin editions that are each styled after a different character. They're all amazing, but we'll focus on the Ace 2 here.

The OnePlus X Genshin Impact 2 Xiangling Themed Ace 2 (yes, that's the official name) is one of the best special editions you'll find. Genshin Impact has become one of the most successful mobile games, and its fan base is as loyal as it is large. This limited edition Ace 2 did a lot to make those fans happy, thanks to the ridiculous amount of accessories included. The phone itself is pretty standard, except for the red leather back. What set this phone apart was the gift box, which came with pins, stickers, a pop-up book, and even a Genshin-themed SIM removal tool. OnePlus is more willing to go above and beyond than others , which I appreciate.

This phone pushed my Genshin Impact experience to the next level

Samsung galaxy s3, s21, z flip 3, docomo nec.

Samsung has been an Olympic sponsor since 2000 and has made special edition phones for each Olympic, Paralympic, and Winter Olympic games since. We're going to focus on three of them, starting with the Galaxy S3 that was made for the 2012 London games. The phone has that year's logo, a lion in Union Jack colors, printed on the back. Then we have the Galaxy S21. The glass was a deep blue, while the frame, camera bump, and logos were gold. In 2022, Samsung did the same thing for the Winter Olympics. Participants were given a Galaxy Z Flip 3 with a gold frame and logos with a pale cream/gold back. That wasn't the best part of the bundle, though. Everyone also received a pair of Galaxy Buds 2, but they came in a case modeled on the Z Flip 3, complete with Winter Olympic wallpaper on the cover screen. The fact this is an official accessory brings me more joy than it should.

Finally, we have the Docomo NEC One Piece Phone. This is another special edition that went above and beyond. Inside the box, users received the phone, a custom box, a model of a boat with a figurine of each character on it that doubled as a charging dock, and more. This might be an old phone coming out in 2012, but that doesn't make it any less memorable. The boot animation, wallpapers, icons, and even widgets were all One Piece-themed.

There's more to come

As we said at the outset, there are more special edition phones to look forward to. Most recently, the announcement of the Barbie phone made waves, even outside the usual tech fan sphere. My wife and her friends heard about this phone before I did and are excited to see it materialize. I hope OnePlus and the other manufacturers keep this up, too, and maybe one day, we can see themed devices available in more regions and more often. And if you like these limited edition phones, you'll probably enjoy a list of the weirdest mainstream phones to have existed.

This can be the headphones themselves or the Copper contacts may have been worn out, replacing the "Charging Port Dock" may be necessary

Drone attacks in Moscow’s glittering business district leave residents on edge

People pause on a walkway alongside the Moscow River opposite the "Moscow City" business district

The glittering towers of the Moscow City business district dominate the skyline of the Russian capital. The sleek glass-and-steel buildings — designed to attract investment amid an economic boom in the early 2000s — are a dramatic, modern contrast to the rest of the more than 800-year-old city.

Now they are a sign of its vulnerability, following a series of drone attacks that rattled some Muscovites and brought the war in Ukraine home to the seat of Russian power .

The attacks on Sunday and Tuesday aren’t the first to hit Moscow — a drone even struck the Kremlin harmlessly in May. But these latest blasts, which caused no casualties but blew out windows on a high-rise building and sent glass cascading to the streets, seemed particularly unsettling.

“It’s very frightening because you wake up at night hearing explosions,” said a woman who identified herself only as Ulfiya as she walked her dog, adding that she lived in a nearby building. Like other Muscovites interviewed by the Associated Press, she did not identify herself further out of fear of retribution or for her personal safety.

Another resident, who gave her name as Ekaterina, said Tuesday’s blast “sounded like thunder.”

“I think for the first time, I got really scared,” she said. “I don’t understand how people in a war zone can live like this every day and not go mad.”

Russia says Moscow and Crimea hit by Ukrainian drones while Russian forces bombard Danube port

Russian authorities accuse Ukraine of a drone attack on Moscow, while Russia continues barrage on ports, striking on the Danube River.

July 24, 2023

The Russian Defense Ministry said it shot down two Ukrainian drones outside Moscow and had electronically jammed another, sending it crashing into the IQ-Quarter skyscraper that houses government offices including the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Digital Development and Communications and the Ministry of Industry and Trade — the same building that was hit Sunday.

A cordon went up around the building and personnel from the fire department and the Russian Investigative Committee were at the scene. Hours later, residents strolled through the district along the Moscow River or sat on benches in the sunshine. By about 1 p.m. Tuesday, workers were already starting to replace damaged windows.

The business district, a 10-minute subway ride west of the Kremlin, is home to some of Moscow’s flashiest restaurants, offering far-reaching views of the capital and a menu of upscale fare like three types of caviar, shellfish from Russia’s Far East and French cuisine.

But there was no escaping the grim news.

While Russian state television has largely played down the strikes, one channel sandwiched a segment on how Moscow’s air defenses successfully intercepted the drones in between reports highlighting Russian attacks on Ukraine.

KYIV, UKRAINE -- JUNE 24, 2023: Larysa Zeltinya, left and Arkadii, last name not given, dance as they join other elderly residents who come out every weekend to dance together during summertime at the Hydropark in Kyiv, Ukraine, Saturday, June 24, 2023. Sleepless in Kyiv: In Ukraine’s capital, the stress of war weighs on everyone. How do people cope?

How do citizens of Kyiv cope with the sleep deprivation and stress from Russia’s war on Ukraine? Some push it down, some try yoga or dancing.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky, said in Ukraine that Moscow “is rapidly getting used to a full-fledged war,” without confirming or denying Kyiv’s involvement in the drone attacks that in recent days have struck from the capital to the Crimean Peninsula.

After Sunday’s strike, the Kremlin said security would be ramped up.

Still, the size of the drone that hit the Moscow City district led analysts to question the effectiveness of the capital’s air defenses, suggesting it could have been launched from Ukraine.

“If this is the case, this would be rather embarrassing for Russia’s air defenses. If a drone has been in Russian airspace for hours, air defenses should have picked it up earlier and shot it down earlier,” said Ulrike Franke, an expert in drones and military technology at the European Council on Foreign Relations.

While they haven’t caused much physical damage, bringing the drone campaign to Moscow “blows holes in Russia’s narrative that the war on Ukraine is successful and that it is being prosecuted far away from any consequences for the Russian people themselves,” said Keir Giles, a Russia expert at the Chatham House think tank in London.

“That is something which is going to be harder and harder for Russia’s propaganda machine to explain away,” he said.

In Ukraine, a harvest of death as bodies of the fallen are returned to their hometowns

Even far from Ukraine’s front lines, military funerals set off waves of mourning. ‘You can’t see an end to it,’ one chaplain says as the war drags on.

June 26, 2023

A Muscovite who identified himself to the AP only as Eldar summed up the strikes this way: “We attack them, they attack us. And it’s obvious that they will succeed somewhere, and we will succeed somewhere. We should try to strengthen the defense.”

In Odintsovo, where some of the drones were downed about 18 miles southwest of the capital, some residents discussed the events on their local Telegram channel.

One woman talked about hearing noises that turned out to be a car or improperly closed trash containers, and seeing what she thought were drones but actually were a flock of birds, a plane and a wind-blown plastic bag.

“How is it possible to live like this?” she asked the group.

“Stop creating panic,” one member admonished her.

“If you hear a noise, be happy because it hasn’t hit you,” added another.

Burrows reported from Tallinn, Estonia.

Week in review Featured

Another week down, let's recap. Our Galaxy A55 battery life test came out, confirming the phone brings a big improvement in battery life over its incredibly popular predecessor.

We saw fresh renders of the Google Pixel 9, the smallest in Google's upcoming lineup. The 9 will offer a 6.03-inch display (presumably 120Hz OLED) compared to the 6.1-inch Pixel 9 Pro and 6.5-inch Pixel 9 Pro XL. The other key difference on the vanilla Pixel 9 is the dual camera setup compared to the three shooters on both the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL.

vivo unveiled the X Fold3 and the X Fold3 Pro.The vivo X Fold3 weighs just 219g, making it the lightest horizontal inward foldable phone. It has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and a 5,500mAh battery. The X Fold3 Pro bumps those to a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and a 5,700mAh battery. There are different camera setups as well. The Pro has a 50MP main camera with a 1/1.3" sensor, a 3x 64MP zoom, and a 50MP ultrawide with AF. It also boasts a V3 imaging chip. The vivo X Pro3 lacks the V3 chip, has a smaller sensor main 50MP camera, and just a 2x zoom camera, but the same ultrawide.

The vivo X Fold3 starts at CNY 7,000 for the 12GB/256GB model, which converts to $970/€895/₹80,800. The vivo X Fold3 Pro starts at CNY 10,000, this is for a 16GB/512GB phone ($1,385/€1,275/₹117,00). The phones are already up in vivo’s store in China and will start shipping by the end of the month.

Drone Attacks in Moscow’s Glittering Business District Leave Residents on Edge

The glittering towers of the Moscow City business district were once symbols of the Russian capital's economic boom in the early 2000s

The glittering towers of the Moscow City business district were once symbols of the Russian capital's economic boom in the early 2000s. (AP Photo/Dmitry Serebryakov)

The glittering towers of the Moscow City business district dominate the skyline of the Russian capital. The sleek glass-and-steel buildings -- designed to attract investment amid an economic boom in the early 2000s – are a dramatic, modern contrast to the rest of the more than 800-year-old city.

Now they are a sign of its vulnerability, following a series of drone attacks that rattled some Muscovites and brought the war in Ukraine home to the seat of Russian power.

The attacks on Sunday and Tuesday aren't the first to hit Moscow — a drone even struck the Kremlin harmlessly in May. But these latest blasts, which caused no casualties but blew out part of a section of windows on a high-rise building and sent glass cascading to the streets, seemed particularly unsettling.

“It's very frightening because you wake up at night hearing explosions,” said a woman who identified herself only as Ulfiya as she walked her dog, adding that she lived in a nearby building.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it shot down two Ukrainian drones outside Moscow and had electronically jammed another, sending it crashing into the IQ-Quarter skyscraper that houses government offices like the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of Digital Development and Communications, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade — the same building that was hit Sunday.

While Russian state television has largely played down the strikes, one channel sandwiched a segment on how Moscow's air defenses successfully intercepted the drones in between reports highlighting Russian attacks on Ukraine.

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said in Ukraine that Moscow “is rapidly getting used to a full-fledged war,” without confirming or denying Kyiv’s involvement in the drone attacks that in recent days have struck from the capital to the Crimean Peninsula .

After Sunday's strike, the Kremlin said security would be ramped up.

While they haven't caused much physical damage, bringing the drone campaign to Moscow “blows holes in Russia’s narrative that the war on Ukraine is successful and that it is being prosecuted far away from any consequences for the Russian people themselves," said Keir Giles, a Russia expert at the Chatham House think tank in London.

"That is something which is going to be harder and harder for Russia’s propaganda machine to explain away,” he said.

A Muscovite who identified himself to the AP only as Eldar summed up the strikes this way: "We attack them, they attack us. And it’s obvious that they will succeed somewhere, and we will succeed somewhere. We should try to strengthen the defense.”

In Odintsovo, where some of the drones were downed about 30 kilometers (18 miles) southwest of the capital, some residents discussed the events on their local Telegram channel.

“If you hear a noise, be happy because it hasn't hit you,” added another.

Android circuit: new galaxy z fold 6 leaks, luxury honor magic6 launch, android 15 secrets.

Taking a look back at this week’s news and headlines across the Android world, including Pixel 8a details, Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon, Samsung’s cheaper chip option, an affordable Galaxy Z Fold, Honor reveals luxury Magic6, ignoring the AI buz, and Android 15 previewed.

Android Circuit is here to remind you of a few of the many discussions around Android in the last seven days. You can also read my weekly digest of Apple news here on Forbes .

Pixel 8a’s Good Look

Google’s mis-cycle tweak to the Pixel line-up has regularly included an “A” model with slightly reduced specs to capture the mid-range market. 2024 looks to be no different, with details on the Pixel 8a leaking this week, including some notes on what could be a stunning screen for this price point:

"The Pixel 8a will upgrade the A series display even further. While the resolution and size of the display are unchanged, the OLED panel now supports 120Hz refresh rates with 1,400 nits of peak HDR brightness, which matches the specs of the higher-end Pixel 8. Also similar to the Pixel 8 is the fact that the panel is sourced from two manufacturers; most likely BOE and Samsung. Given all this, we can assume that the displays of the two devices are closely related and should perform similarly."

Qualcomm’s Balance Of Power And AI

While not a mid-cycle update to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, a trimmed 8 Gen 3 that will offer flagship-like performance plus access to the latest AI hardware:

"The 8s Gen 3 is pitched slightly below the current Snapdragon 8, sports one less performance core, and runs at a slower speed. It’s clearly targeted towards the tier just below the flagship system-on-chip. Thanks to specs that almost match the top-line hardware but at a more affordable price, it will be perfect for handsets colloquially known as flagship killers."

( Forbes ).

Samsung’s Cheaper Chip Choice

Samsung is looking to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm and the cost of materials by equipping more of its smartphones with the homegrown Exynos chipset. It’s seen as a slightly weaker alternative to the equivalent Snapdragon, but will that small difference matter in mid-range handsets?

“We've already started seeing signs of this shift with the Exynos 2400's inclusion in the galaxy S24 lineup. Rumor has it that Samsung may go Exynos-only for the Galaxy S25 series. The new Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55 feature Exynos chipsets as well, and the company is also looking to replace MediaTek chipsets in its low-range lineup with its own chipset."

( SamMobile ).

A More Affordable Foldable Model

Staying with cheaper Samsung options, the premium range of foldable phones looks set to introduce a Fan Edition. This summer’s Galaxy Unpacked event should see the Galaxy Z Fold 6 launch, with a Z Fold 6 FE model launched alongside it.

"The price of foldable phones in 2024 remains high, an issue the Fan Edition variants have been specifically designed to address. A Z Fold 6 FE would bring one of the most exciting technologies to a much wider audience and allow Samsung to capture more of the foldable market share… with Huawei threatening to become the world’s number one foldable manufacturer, Samsung needs to respond. The Fold FE will be that response."

Honor Magic6 Gets The Supercar Treatment

Following the release of the Porsche Design Magic V2 RSR, Honor’s next step in its partnership with the iconic design house is customising the regular Magic6 flagship ( reviewed here on Forbes ).

“Honor is proud to unveil the Porsche Design Honor Magic6 RSR, a technological icon fueled by the essence of Porsche DNA and created with the drive to go beyond the status quo,” said George Zhao, CEO of Honor Device Co., Ltd. “Our newest smart device comes from our shared pursuit of excellence with Porsche Design, a partnership built on the promise to deliver advanced human-centric technology with timeless aesthetics.”

Don’t Make An AI Choice Just Yet

It might be the big buzzword, but Conor Cawley is here to remind you that the jump from buzzword to killer app has not happened yet:

"But in 2024, AI features shouldn’t affect your purchasing decision, no matter how persuasive the marketing. The reality is that it’s going to be a few years before AI functionality makes significant strides that it will matter what tools are included by default on your smartphone; after all, Gemini and ChatGPT are both available in the Play Store right now. And until then, there are plenty of other features to worry about when it comes to buying your next device."

( Android Police ).

And Finally...

What happens next? Google has released the second developer preview of Android 15. While it is not expected to be available to consumers until late September, the extensive public testing allows the market to become au fait with the new features. One of the most intriguing is the use of satellite technology:

"Apps can use ServiceState.isUsingNonTerrestrialNetwork() to detect when a device is connected to a satellite, giving them more awareness of why full network services may be unavailable. Additionally, Android 15 provides support for SMS/ MMS applications as well as preloaded RCS applications to use satellite connectivity for sending and receiving messages."

( Android Developer Blog ).
