Golden State Warriors v Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz will get another chance to take on the Golden State Warriors tonight after getting Steph Curry put on a show just a few days ago. With two games under their belt since trade deadline the Jazz have struggled to make things work with their new lineups and younger players getting time. There are some bright spots happening even though the Jazz have lost both of their recent games.

Keyonte George had a nice game asgainst the Lakers with 13 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and he did it while shooting 5/9 from the field.

Taylor Hendricks had his second game getting regular minutes and it wasn’t his best shooting night going 1/6 from three, but he has looked good defensively. In a game the Jazz lost by double digits, Hendricks was just a -1 in the plus minus. Eventually that three will start falling and with his defensive ability, he should become a more additive player soon.

And that’s really the crossroads the Jazz are at right now, can they integrate their rookies and have them make positive contributions sooner than later? The Jazz are clearly trying to see what their rookies can do but there will be growing pains, something the Jazz expected.

Injury report: Warriors vs. Jazz

The Golden State Warriors suffered another heartbreaking defeat on Wednesday, blowing yet another double-digit fourth quarter lead en route to a 130-125 loss to the LA Clippers. It was the type of performance that, despite featuring the Dubs looking fantastic for three quarters, prompted Steph Curry to publicly berate the team for being “very average” at home.

Yet despite the discouraging fourth quarter, the Dubs are still in position to enter the All-Star break with momentum when they take on the Utah Jazz tonight. It’s Golden State’s second game in Salt Lake City this week, after defeating the Jazz by 22 points on Monday night. If they can repeat that performance and earn another victory, they’ll have won eight of their final 10 contests before the All-Star Game, with the only two losses being a late-game collapse and an overtime thriller (and even going further back, their three prior games were a blowout win and pair of one-point losses).

Plus, they’d be back above .500. So it’s a big game, and it’s one where both teams are fairly healthy. Here’s the complete injury report.

Out — Chris Paul (left hand fracture)

There’s a decent chance that this is the last game Paul misses before returning from surgery on his fractured hand. He was always pegged for a mid-late February return, and the Dubs don’t play again for a week due to the All-Star break. This will be his 18th consecutive game missed, and after Wednesday’s composure-lacking loss, we’re all hoping he’s back again soon.

Nobody! Utah technically is listing three players — Johnny Juzang, Micah Potter, and Jason Preston — as out, but that’s due to G League assignments, not injuries (all three of those youngsters are on two-way contracts). Utah is fully healthy, but there’s still no excuse for the Warriors to not win this game.

Enjoy the action, Dub Nation.

LeBron James says he will sit out Lakers game vs. Jazz on second night of back to back

The Lakers will be without LeBron James on Wednesday as he confirmed after Tuesday’s game against the Pistons that he would sit out against the Jazz.

Detroit Pistons v Los Angeles Lakers

There was no suspense this time around for the Lakers as LeBron James outright confirmed what most would have suspected. After Tuesday’s win over the Pistons , LeBron told reporters that he would sit out against the Jazz on the second night of a back-to-back.

LeBron James says he won’t play tomorrow on the second night of a back to back in Utah. — Dan Woike (@DanWoikeSports) February 14, 2024

LeBron did play the most recent back-to-back against both the Nuggets and Pelicans at the end of last week, but sat out the back end of the team’s back-to-back against the Hawks and Celtics .

Prior to that, he had sat out the team’s two of the team’s three previous back-to-backs in December. In short, it’s not out of the ordinary for LeBron to sit on back-to-backs.

The Lakers have a bit more breathing room that might lend him to sit out. Tuesday’s win moved them to three games over .500 for the first time since December.

Without him, the Lakers are 3-2 this season but did win their most recent game he sat against the Celtics . LeBron has sat a road game in Utah, that coming on Jan. 13 when the Lakers lost by seven on a night when Anthony Davis had a triple-double but struggled to 5-21 shooting. D’Angelo Russell had 39 points in that game.

Utah is a side competing directly with the Lakers in the playoff seedings. After Tuesday’s game, the Lakers are in the No. 9 seed, 2.5 games above the Jazz. The Lakers also moved to within two games of the Kings after their loss as well and are just one game above the Warriors, showing how tight the playoff/play-in race is with the All-Star break near.

A win in Utah would be huge for many reasons, especially if it comes sans LeBron.

Phoenix Suns' Devin Booker (hip) out, Bradley Beal (ankle) available for Utah Jazz matchup

injury report on the utah jazz

Devin Booker is ruled out Thursday's game against Utah Jazz at Footprint Center with left hip soreness while Bradley Beal is available with a right ankle sprain after being a game-time decision.

"He had some hip soreness from the game the other night and is not able to go," said Suns coach Frank Vogel about Booker as the Suns topped Milwaukee on Tuesday at home. "Hopefully it's not long-term. He'll be day-to-day."

Booker and Beal were both were listed as questionable as Vogel said they suffered the injuries in Tuesday's game. Damion Lee (knee) remains out as he hasn't played all season.

"Swelled up," Vogel said about Beal's ankle. "He's not exactly sure which play it happened on. It was just one of those things he woke up the next day like dang, it was swollen."

The Suns are 13-7 with their Big 3 of Kevin Durant, Booker and Beal in the lineup as they've played 16 straight games together. Booker wasn't on the initial injury report released Wednesday, but Beal was.

They both played Tuesday as Booker scored a team-high 32 points while Beal went for 25 points. They both scored 16 points in the second half as did Durant, who finished with 28.

Fifth in the West, Phoenix (30-21) heads back on the road for Saturday's matchup against Golden State (23-25). If the playoffs started today, the Warriors wouldn't make it as they're 11th in the West.

The Jazz (26-26) are 10th in the conference.

Lakers brush off LeBron James trade rumors and beat Utah

Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler defends against Anthony Davis in the first half.

LeBron James wasn’t with the Lakers as they played their final game prior to the All-Star break.

In an alternate universe, maybe he’d be with the Golden State Warriors.

In this one? It just meant the Lakers and James were able to steal an extra day before the break.

Early Wednesday morning before the Lakers’ 138-122 win against the Utah Jazz, a story published by ESPN detailed attempts by the Warriors and Philadelphia 76ers to trigger trade discussions with the Lakers about James ahead of the deadline last week.

Anthony Davis has big game as Lakers defeat Pistons

Anthony Davis scored 20 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and dished out four assists to go with six blocks as Lakers beat Pistons.

Feb. 13, 2024

Sources not authorized to speak publicly confirmed the calls, which were strongly rebuffed.

The discussions about James’ availability came with his cryptic hourglass emoji post as the backdrop and his lack of patience around the deadline becoming a bit of an annual tradition with the Lakers.

That rival teams even felt there was a shot at acquiring James speaks to the unease around the Lakers following recent losses to Houston and Atlanta. His player option this summer, plus the potential for his son Bronny James to enter the draft, are looming factors that could create offseason drama.

Coach Darvin Ham said the Lakers’ focus remains internal.

“We said it early, we said it often, we’ve been derailed at certain segments through injuries with our consistency, but at the end of the day, maybe people [did not] believe it at the trade deadline, but we believe in what we have in our locker room wholeheartedly,” Ham said.

“And we feel like what we have in our locker room believes in us and the process of us trying to turn this thing and catch some rhythm in a positive manner. And that’s what you’ve seen over the last six games. So, all of that fantasy basketball — coulda, woulda, shoulda stuff — it’s not my responsibility. My responsibility is to coach the hell out of these guys that have a Laker uniform on.”

The Lakers’ win in Boston following James’ emoji post came without him or Anthony Davis, and it shook the team out of its two-game funk at a critical moment before the trade deadline.

“We’re doing a lot of things well,” D’Angelo Russell said. “The scary part is we can be better at a lot of things too.”

Wednesday’s win without James came at another important juncture, the Lakers capping a seven-game stretch since James’ post by going 6-1 and playing with immaculate vibes.

Unlike the win in Boston, the Lakers very much had Davis in Utah, with the All-Star keying a 12-0 run to put the game out of reach at the end of the third quarter.

Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie drives against Portland Trail Blazers guard Matisse Thybulle.

Spencer Dinwiddie chose Lakers for appealing to his ‘fight till you win’ side

Spencer Dinwiddie is still getting used to the magnitude of joining the Lakers, and the decision to come home was motivated, in part, to fight his naysayers.

Feb. 12, 2024

He scored a team-high 37 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, his 12th double-double in his last 15 games.

“My first priority is to score the basketball. And the rest is second, third, fourth, fifth,” Davis said. “But like tonight, it’s obviously easier when everybody has it going.”

Rui Hachimura, who has helped ignite the Lakers’ offense since moving into the starting lineup, scored a career-best 36 points. Austin Reaves added 22 and D’Angelo Russell scored 11 while dishing out a career-high 17 assists to go with nine rebounds.

“When I get into the game, I want to impact the game.” Hachimura said. “That’s always my goal. I want to win the game, but I want to be the X-factor for the team, either coming off the bench or starting, whatever that is, offensively, defensively, everything. Just got to be aggressive, use my size, whatever it takes to win.”

The Lakers (29-25) are four games over .500 for the first time since Dec. 15. They were two games under .500 the last time they were in Utah, when they lost one month ago.

Since then, the Lakers have remade themselves as a ball-sharing, fast-paced team with Davis anchoring the defense.

“[It’s] not what we can be,” Davis said, “but it’s who we are.”

Wednesday threatened that identity. The Lakers arrived at their hotel in Salt Lake City around 4 a.m. after beating Detroit on Tuesday night. James already was ruled out. Players had firm plans for the All-Star break and the Jazz, hungry for a win, began to push against the Lakers.

But there wasn’t any real give. The Lakers shot 57% from the field, 45% on threes and 83% at the line. They had 34 assists and nine turnovers.

“It’s tough to come in here and get a win like that, obviously, without Bron. Big part of what we do,” Reaves said. “But I thought we stayed the course really well. We didn’t press it at any time. We just played the game the right way.”

In an alternate reality, maybe one from mid-December, the Lakers would’ve folded at the strongest signs of trouble.

But in the one they’re living now, one that’s been harmonious since the trade deadline, things are looking pretty good.

Injury Report: LA Clippers vs Utah Jazz

T he LA Clippers had their best win of the season against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night, but now they need to follow it up against the Utah Jazz tonight. Utah has some pretty important people on their injury report, too.

The Clippers have three players listed on their injury report: Brandon Boston, Mason Plumlee, and Joshua Primo. Brandon Boston has finally recovered from his tendinopathy injury but is now out due to being in the G League. Joshua Primo is also out on a G League assignment. Mason Plumlee remains out due to a left MCL sprain after Julius Randle collided with his knee. Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, James Harden, and Russell Westbrook are all available.

The Utah Jazz have seven players listed on their injury report: Lauri Markkanen, Josh Christopher, Jordan Clarkson, Johnny Juzang, Kelly Olynyk, Micah Potter, and Brice Sensabaugh.

Lauri Markkanen is out due to a left hamstring strain, Josh Christopher is out due to a G League two-way, Jordan Clarkson is questionable due to a right thigh contusion, Johnny Juzang is out due to a G League two-way, Kelly Olynyk is questionable due to a right shoulder sprain, Micah Potter is out due to a G League two-way, and Brice Sensabaugh is out due to a G League assignment.

If the LA Clippers defeat the Utah Jazz, they'll finally have a winning record for the very first time since acquiring James Harden in early November. Needless to say, this is a very big game for LA.
