Typing Learning For Kids

Basic typing lessons.

Typing learning for kids  – just got easier! Starting with a baseline, the Basic Typing Lessons are for beginners and should be introduced at age four or younger. This collection of lessons deals largely with the letters themselves, along with the other vital keys which are geographically near. By teaching nearby letters and keys in groups, these lessons build the base of knowledge necessary for all the higher lessons and prepare kids for the Beginner lessons which introduce home row keys.

In each of these lessons, users learn about the placement of their fingers on the keyboard, along with which fingers should be touching which key. Using grey tone silhouettes as guides, along with red and green color coding and a penalty noise to indicate successful and unsuccessful typing, these lessons will provide even the newest of users with a much wider breadth of knowledge about the keyboard, and about proper typing etiquette.

This color-coded penalty and reward system also works to give the kids pause when they make a mistake, encouraging them to focus less on overall speed, and more on accuracy. Also, by focusing on the letters themselves, instead of initially worrying about capitalization, the program makes the lessons simpler.

The lessons are fairly short, and easily digestible, meaning that kids with even the shortest of attention spans, or those with short periods of time to work can learn a few keys at a time, while still building on the larger cumulative base of knowledge, perfect for younger kids and those trying to learn in their free time.

What Do Kids Learn in 4th Grade?

Bart Coenders / Getty Images

Grade school is a fast-paced time of learning as well as developing social and cognitive skills. By fourth grade, children will have gotten the hang of the routines and rhythm of school and will be taking on the challenges of learning increasingly-difficult material in different subjects in school.

Kids learn a number of new things in 4th grade, both socially and academically. Just as the formation of cliques begins to increase and complicate your child's social life, the academic ante is upped as well, requiring your child to not only be responsible for their own work, but to learn how to work in groups as well. This year is typically the genesis of the too-heavy backpack, as each subject in 4th grade usually has its own book and notebook.

Skills and Topics Commonly Learned by 4th Graders

Curriculum varies from state to state and by school district, but many of the skills and topics kids learn in 4th grade are the same.

This year in math, your fourth grader will start learning the processes on which the more complicated branches of math are based. In third grade , the focus was on number sense and patterns. This year, your child will learn to use those patterns to find the factors and multiples of numbers, to convert and calculate units of measure (for example, figure out how many minutes in one and a half hours) and to work with fractions.

By the end of the fourth-grade year, your child should be able to add and subtract fractions, recognize equivalent and non-equivalent fractions, know the characteristics of lines and angles and feel comfortable analyzing, collecting, organizing and presenting data.

Your fourth grader will begin to branch out a bit in reading. They'll work on gaining a more sophisticated vocabulary, beginning to look at word roots, prefixes and suffixes to figure out unfamiliar words and to associate them with words they already know.

They'll read a variety of new genres including myths and legends, folk tales and fables, learning to connect characters' experiences with events in their own life. This year they will also read different types of non-fiction materials, including encyclopedias, reputable Internet sites, and books as they learn to effectively research a topic.

Fourth-grade writing is closely interconnected with reading. If reading fables and folk tales, your child is likely to be writing their own stories with themself as the hero. If it hasn't been before, writing is now a daily activity with a focus on using a variety of different types of punctuation to create sentences.

Your child will learn the proper use of quotations marks and the power of dialogue in a story, striving to develop their personal voice and writing style . They will also be taught to use research tools to create a coherent, detailed report.

In science, students are ready to move on to looking at the scientific processes of classification of organisms, the arrangement of objects by properties, as well as measuring events. Topics they might explore this year include the motion of objects, electricity and circuits, fossils, meteorology, and inherited traits.

In learning about these different things, expect your 4th grader to begin asking many questions about the world around them, but try not to give them all the answers! Finding ways to answer their own questions is all part of the learning process.

Social Studies

In many states, the 4th grade social studies curriculum typically devotes a great deal of learning time to students' home state in addition to American history. If this is your state’s standard, your child will learn about the geographic features of their state, how they have changed over time, and what role industry and settlement may have played in those changes.

They may also learn the history and government of their state and might take field trips to visit the city or state government. By the end of the year, they should have a working knowledge of who's who and what role they play (or played) in creating the home in which they live.

5 tips to teach 4th grade language arts, 5 tips to teach 4th grade science, 10 general tips to teach 4th grade kids.

Teaching 4th grade presents its own set of unique challenges and rewards. As someone who has been in the trenches of 4th-grade classrooms, I’ve gathered firsthand experience in how to teach 4th grade . Teachers can use SplashLearn to track the progress of their students. This feature helps in identifying areas where a student might be struggling, allowing for a more personalized teaching approach.

5. Introduce Step-by-Step Problem Solving

How to teach 4th grade math effectively involves guiding students through step-by-step problem-solving. This methodical approach helps them understand each part of a problem, fostering a deeper comprehension of mathematical processes.

  • To solve a long division problem, break it down into smaller, manageable steps and go through each step slowly.
  • Use a problem-solving framework, like ‘Read, Question, Solve, and Check’, to structure their approach to math problems .
  • Encourage them to write out each step when solving a problem, which can help identify where they struggle and need more practice.

1. Introduce Literary Analysis

At the 4th grade level, introducing basic literary analysis helps students delve deeper into texts, encouraging critical thinking and a better appreciation of literature. This involves examining elements like plot, characters, and setting, and understanding how they contribute to the story’s overall impact.

  • Discuss the motives and actions of characters in a story and how they affect the plot.
  • Analyze the setting of a story and its influence on the narrative.
  • Encourage students to identify themes and messages in stories and relate them to their own experiences.

Begin introducing these literary analysis games for 4th grade kids:

It’s crucial to use clear, concise instructions and check for understanding. This can be done through simple questioning techniques or quick activities that assess their grasp of the instructions.

2. Encourage Independent Learning

Teaching fourth graders means encouraging them to take more responsibility for their learning. Introduce tasks that require them to work independently, like reading assignments or simple research projects. This boosts their confidence and prepares them for more complex tasks in higher grades.

3. Incorporate Technology Mindfully

At this stage, integrating technology can greatly enhance learning. Use educational apps and interactive online resources that align with your lesson plans . However, balancing screen time with traditional learning methods is important, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.

4. Focus on Critical Thinking

Developing critical thinking skills is essential. Present them with problems that require analysis and decision-making. Group discussions, debates, or problem-solving tasks can be very effective. This approach teaches them to think independently and express their thoughts clearly.

5. Implementing Collaborative Learning

Group work is key. It helps them develop social skills and learn how to work collaboratively. Projects where they need to work in teams teach them about cooperation, listening to different perspectives, and conflict resolution.

6. Adapt to Different Learning Styles

Every child learns differently. Some may prefer visual aids, while others learn better through auditory or hands-on activities. It’s important to vary your teaching methods to cater to these different styles, making learning more effective and inclusive.

7. Set and Review Goals Regularly

Goal setting is crucial at this stage. Work with your students to set achievable academic and personal goals. Regularly review these goals to track progress and make adjustments. This practice teaches them the value of setting objectives and working towards them, a skill that will benefit them beyond the classroom.

8. Promote Self-Assessment and Reflection

Evaluate 4th graders work is essential for their growth. Encourage them to reflect on their assignments and identify their strengths and areas for improvement. This practice fosters self-awareness and helps them become more responsible and independent learners. Regular reflection sessions can be incorporated after completing significant tasks or projects.

9. Promote Emotional and Social Growth

Emotional and social development is as important as academic growth. Encourage activities that promote empathy, respect, and self-awareness. Discussing feelings, group dynamics, and personal challenges openly in class can create a supportive learning environment.

10. Enhance Problem-Solving Skills

Problem-solving is a critical skill for 4th graders. Incorporate puzzles, logical games, and real-life scenarios that challenge them to think and find solutions. This sharpens their reasoning abilities and prepares them for complex subjects they’ll encounter. Encouraging them to explain their thought process helps in deepening their understanding.

As we wrap up this blog on teaching tips for 4th graders, remember teaching 4th grade is all about patience, creativity, and understanding each child’s unique way of learning. Keep your lessons engaging and relevant, and don’t forget to have fun. After all, when you enjoy teaching, your students will likely enjoy learning!

State signs off on formula to determine which Tennessee fourth graders to hold back

learn to type 4th grade

A crucial formula to determine whether thousands of Tennessee fourth graders will be held back or not under a state reading law was finalized Friday.

After lengthy discussions with Tennessee education leaders and months of consideration, the State Board of Education unanimously voted to pass a long-awaited definition of "adequate growth" for roughly 12,000 fourth graders.

As defined, the complex formula for adequate growth factors in the student's English language arts score on the state standardized test and the probability that they will eventually reach proficiency. The growth goal will be individualized to each student. It's now up to districts to apply the formula and relay that information to parents.

Fourth graders can also move on to fifth grade if they pass English language arts section of the state's upcoming standardized tests, set to be administered from April 15-30 for grades 3-5. The tests are part of the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program and commonly referred to as TNReady.

From January: Thousands of Tennessee 4th graders again face retention as lawmakers press for clarity

Several board members said they believe the intent of the state law is good when it comes to providing resources and interventions to students who are struggling to read. However, an estimate by the state education department that up to 6,000 fourth graders may be retained under the growth formula gave many of them pause. That would mark the second time those same students have faced retention in the span of one year.

"This has not been an easy decision for any of us," board member Warren Wells said Friday.

The board's decision comes as lawmakers, school leaders and others press for clarity on how the reading law affects fourth graders .

Why 12,000 Tennessee students enrolled in fourth grade tutoring

Tennessee's controversial third grade reading law initially passed in 2021 but did not take effect until 2023, with the intent of giving schools and state leaders time to work out the specifics. The law was passed in a larger push to address massive learning loss due to disruptions during the coronavirus pandemic.

Last spring, just over 12,000 third graders opted into state-funded, high-dosage tutoring in fourth grade after falling short of a state reading benchmark. Tutoring was one of many options for third graders to avoid being held back.

Now, those thousands enrolled in fourth grade tutoring may again face retention if they don't demonstrate adequate growth.

Just  1.2% of Tennessee third graders — or about 900 students — were held back  after last year's rollout of the reading law. But if the education department's estimate holds up, that number will rise sharply.

Out of the roughly 75,000 students who were third graders in the 2022-23 school year, 8-9% of them could be held back by the end of this school year. That number includes the initial 1.2% along with the projected 5,000-6,000 more at risk in fourth grade.

Board presses for legislative action

While the adequate growth definition is a step in the right direction, board members agreed Friday there is more work to be done to streamline the reading law as a whole. Several said they were hopeful that state lawmakers would make further amendments to the law so that fourth graders who fall short of the new growth measure will be given more options to move on to fifth grade.

Board member Krissi McInturff, who also works as a teacher, gave an emotional statement during the Friday meeting. She said reading is essential and she appreciates that the law offers resources to students who are struggling. But she also echoed frustrations voiced by parents, teachers, school leaders and lawmakers that the law lacks clarity when it comes to fourth graders.

"Failing a fourth grader is not the answer," she said. "This law is so close to being great."

What's next, where to learn more

TCAP tests will conclude by the end of April for grades 3-5 statewide, again setting off a fast-moving timeline for parents of third and fourth graders as they await results. Here's what we know — and what we don't — about what's next.

Third grade

  • Three universal reading screening tests are administered throughout the year for Tennessee students in kindergarten through third grade in the fall, winter and spring. It's up to districts to relay those results to parents and tell them if their child may be struggling or at risk for retention.
  • Last year, the education department released TCAP English language arts scores for third graders on May 19. It's not yet clear when ELA scores will be available this year.
  • The appeal process opened from May 30-June 30 last year. Parents could file appeals within 14 days of being notified their child would be retained. It's not yet clear what the appeal timeline will be this year.
  • Final retention decisions will be made over the summer as the appeals and summer school processes unfold.

Fourth grade

  • While third grade ELA scores were out on May 19 last year, it's not yet clear when ELA scores for fourth graders enrolled in tutoring under the state law will be released this year.
  • Lawmakers have discussed proposing further amendments to the state reading law, potentially offering more ways for fourth graders to avoid being held back from fifth grade. However, as of Feb. 16, no legislation had been announced.
  • David Laird, who helps oversee assessment and accountability at the state education department, said final retention decisions for parents of fourth graders awaiting the outcome of the adequate growth formula will be made by July 1.

More information on the reading and retention law from the Tennessee Department of Education can be found at  tn.gov/education/learning-acceleration .

Your Guide to Working with a Dietitian

learn to type 4th grade

Dietitians can be a great help for those following a specific diet to manage their health or for anyone looking to improve their diet.

Have you been trying to change your eating habits or improve your relationship with food only to find yourself overwhelmed by everything there is to know about nutrition? If so, you’re not alone. Nutrition professionals are available to help.

Dietitians are experts in the world of nutrition, and their primary role is to guide people through the process of learning about nutrition and making dietary changes. So, here’s everything you need to know about what dietitians can do, what they can’t do, and how to find a good dietitian.

Why would you need to see a dietitian?

Dietitians serve as educators, advocates, and support for clients on their nutrition journey. Here are just a few of the services that dietitians may offer to their clients:

  • basic nutrition education
  • chronic disease management
  • weight management
  • meal planning services
  • eating disorder recovery

Let’s say that you’re starting a new health journey, and one of your goals is to eat a more well-rounded, balanced diet . However, you know virtually nothing about nutrition beyond the basics and that’s making it hard for you to meet your goals.

Or perhaps you recently received a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol . In addition to prescribing medication, your doctor might have told you that changing your eating habits can help you manage this condition. But you might have no idea where to even start.

A dietitian can offer the education and support to help you make those changes and meet your goals.

Is it better to see a nutritionist or a dietitian?

Some people use the terms “nutritionist” and “dietitian” interchangeably, but it can be helpful to understand the differences between the two.

A dietitian is a board certified, licensed nutritionist who has formal education and training in the field of nutrition. Before someone can become certified as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), they must complete:

  • a graduate program in dietetics
  • a 900–1,200-hour internship in dietetics
  • the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s board exam

RDs and RDNs have few restrictions on the type of nutrition services that they can provide to clients. For example, they can offer medical nutrition therapy, meal planning, and other individualized nutrition counseling.

A nutritionist can include anyone who teaches others about nutrition and the role that food plays in overall health. Although there are regulations on who can use the credentials RD and RDN, virtually anyone can call themselves a nutritionist — even without formal training.

With that said, nutritionists without RD or RDN credentials are subject to state regulations on which services they can provide. Some states do allow nutritionists to offer one-on-one counseling, but there are a few that prohibit individualized nutrition therapy without a dietetics license.

What can’t a dietitian do?

Even though dietitians have more freedom than nutritionists to provide individualized nutrition counseling, there are still some things that fall outside of their scope of practice.

First, a dietitian can’t diagnose any health conditions. So, this means that while a dietitian can help you treat or manage your health condition through nutrition therapy, they can’t provide you with a diagnosis.

Second, dietitians can’t legally prescribe medications. In fact, only a few healthcare professionals have the authority to prescribe medications . Those include Doctors of Medicine (MDs), Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs), and, in some states, Physician Assistants (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs).

Are dietitians covered by insurance or Medicare?

If you have a chronic health condition that requires nutrition therapy, Medicare and most private health insurance plans may cover these services. However, one thing to know is most plans usually only cover medical nutrition therapy if it’s with an RD or RDN.

Some insurance plans also include wellness services — like nutrition counseling — under their preventive services . Since coverage varies from plan to plan, you can learn more about what your plan covers by checking your summary of benefits and coverage or reaching out to a company representative.

How to find a good dietitian

It can take some time and research to find the right dietitian for you. If this is your first time searching for a nutritionist, here are a few tips to keep in mind as you begin your search:

  • Consider your goals: One of the first questions to consider before even beginning your search is, “What are your goals?” Considering how many different nutrition specialties there are, setting a goal can help you narrow down your options.
  • Check their credentials: All dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are dietitians. While some nutritionists have formal education and training, the RD and RDN certifications are the best way to guarantee a comprehensive background in nutrition.
  • Set up a consultation: Many dietitians offer low cost or free consultations to help you decide if nutrition services are for you. Consultations are a great chance to ask questions about their background, philosophy, and counseling approach.
  • Seek out cultural competence: Cultural competency is important in all areas of healthcare, including nutrition. Consider seeking out a culturally competent dietitian who understands how your culture will affect your care.

If you’re ready to start your search, consider checking out the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Find a Nutrition Expert tool to search for dietitians near you.

Dietitians play an important role in helping clients meet their nutrition goals by providing education, tools, and support. Whether you’re looking for nutritional support for a chronic health condition or just interested in changing your relationship with food, a dietitian can help.
