Use the tips in this non-fiction writing lesson plan along with the free non-fiction book printable to build your own reference library.

non fiction lesson ideas ks1

The first books we read with children are usually simple story books or collections of nursery rhymes.

As they get older and we read more and more to them, we typically do still keep to fiction books, although the storylines and characters develop in complexity.

Of course, there is a huge wealth of non-fiction books for our children to meet too. They’re fascinating, educational, and practical, and many titles aimed at children include fun elements such as tabs to pull and flaps to open, to make an engaging reading experience.

Let’s focus this lesson on the art of non-fiction books, and help our children write their own information book.

In this lesson, children can:

:: learn about non-fiction books

:: learn about the elements of a book including title, author, publisher, copyright, contents, index, and glossary

play academy

:: research a chosen topic

:: create their own non-fiction book using a free printable template as a guide

:: share their knowledge with others

Materials needed

:: examples of non-fiction books

:: printable non-fiction book template (see below for details on how to print)

:: scissors

:: pens and pencils

:: notepaper

:: stapler or yarn

non fiction lesson ideas ks1

Get to know a non-fiction book

Begin by taking a closer look at non-fiction books.

Offer your children a selection of books to choose from: recipe books, information books, ‘how to’ manuals, and academic text books.

Choose a book to have a closer look at. Even if you are used to reading non-fiction your children might not have considered all the components of such a book.

Browse through the pages of your chosen book and take a look at:

:: front cover with title and author details

:: the spine

:: the front page with details of publisher and copyright

:: the contents page

:: the layout of the content with chapters and illustrations

:: a glossary, if there is one

:: the index

:: the blurb on the back cover

Talk about the purpose of your book and who it is written for. Is it meant to inform, teach, inspire or entertain? Is it aimed at a beginner or an expert?

Non-fiction writing

Before you move on to writing your own non-fiction book, think about what a good information book needs.

Work together to come up with a list of ‘top tips’ for non-fiction writing. You can re-cap some of the ideas you talked about when you reviewed the non-fiction book example and add other thoughts.

You might include some of these top tips:

:: think about who you are writing the book for – don’t make the book too easy or too complicated

:: have a mix of text and illustrations

:: have an organised layout

:: give lots of useful information

:: include a contents page and index to make information easy to find

Make your own non-fiction book

Now you can make your own non -fiction book.

Choose a topic to write about: something you are interested in, something you know lots about, or something you want to find out about.

Think about what main topics you want to cover in your book: perhaps a page on each key area. Make notes to help organise your ideas.

Do some research: take a look at other reference books on your topic or interview an expert to get more ideas for your book.

You can use NurtureStore’s non-fiction book printable as a guide to help you format your book.

Each child might like to create their own book or they can collaborate with co-authors.

The non-fiction book printable is very adaptable and you can select the right combination of pages to suit your child and the topic they are writing about.

You don’t have to use all the pages, and you can also print extra ones if you need them.

Some of the pages guide children on how to format their book, others pages leave plenty of room for creativity.

Pages included in the non -fiction printable, for you to choose from, include:

:: a front cover with space for the title and author’s name

:: front page with space for publisher and copyright details

:: a contents page

:: a mix of structured and free-style page layouts, including lines for writing and frames for illustrations

:: a glossary

:: an index

non fiction lesson ideas ks1

Once you have completed as many pages as you want, you can compile your book into the right order.

This is a good time to complete the contents page and index, as you’ll know which part of the book will be on which page.

You can fasten the pages together using a stapler or with yarn.

You might like to gather all your non-fiction books together in a shelf to create you own reference library.

You can print more of the non-fiction book templates from NurtureStore’s Printable Library any time you want to make another book. It’s a great way to re-cap knowledge at the end of a learning topic.

Fiction VS. Nonfiction Teaching Ideas

nonfiction text features posters

Help students understand the differences between fiction vs nonfiction texts. These teaching ideas & activities are perfect for making an anchor chart as your students are learning to distinguish between fiction and nonfiction.

Hello Friend!

A lot has changed in the classroom since the implementation of the Common Core Standards.  While I may not love all of the changes, one shift I do think is positive is the greater emphasis on reading and writing informational texts. In the past, 80% of the texts read in class were fiction. Now, the Common Core Standards aim for reading materials to be 50% fiction and 50% nonfiction.

I love sharing informational texts with my students because it is an easy way for me to connect with them and share in their interests.  There is great excitement in the air when together we can learn new information and build our background knowledge.

Today I’m eager to share with you the day-to-day details and resources I used to teach my nonfiction unit!  So let’s get started!

How I Teach Fiction Vs. Non-Fiction

I begin the unit I make sure my students understand what makes a text fiction or nonfiction. After modeling how I know, students turn and talk to a partner to explain how they know the text type. I then add these posters to our focus wall.

These videos are an engaging way to dive into the topic!

Harry Kindergarten is always a favorite!

How to Teach Non-Fiction Text Features

On Day 2 my plan was to teach the features of nonfiction texts. I asked my students, “What are text features?”   I looked out and saw blank stares…heard nothing but crickets….But don’t worry, this actually excited me! I love when no one already knows  what I am about to teach. 🙂

Prior to this mini lesson I made this anchor chart with just the text features pasted on.

nonfiction text features posters

I shrunk the posters down and printed 4 to a page .  I did not prewrite the post-its on the poster, instead my students and I created the notes together as we discovered, discussed, and determined each text feature’s purpose.

It took 4 mini lessons to determine what these text features were and to understand how they help us while reading nonfiction texts. I hung our anchor chart in a low space that was accessible to my students while working in the classroom.

nonfiction text feature posters on a ring

I also printed the text feature posters out and put them on a ring. The ring hung on my whiteboard in the front of my classroom so students could easily access then at anytime.

Comparing Fiction and Non-Fiction

Now that my readers had a good foundation of identifying nonfiction books and text features, we moved on to comparing fiction to nonfiction texts . These two familiar books on butterflies were perfect to use as examples of each text type.

Comparing Fiction and Nonfiction

In first grade students must be able to explain major differences between fiction and nonfiction texts. To support them I premade the beginning of our anchor chart to compare texts.  As my students discovered the differences between the butterfly texts, we filled out the chart together.

Later they sorted the attributes on their own chart.

Comparing Fiction and Nonfiction worksheet

I used this printable in a literacy center. It also served as a great resource for having them share their thinking with a partner.

Comparing fiction nonfiction

This printable made a good assessment that I shared with parents at conferences.

comparing fiction nonfiction

I recognize prepping these materials can take A LOT of time!  That’s why I’ve created resources to help you. These three resources for teaching about non-fiction are ready to print and teach! Grab them below!

fiction vs nonfiction

Looking for more ways to teach your students about informational texts? Take a look at this post where I share 5 tips for How to Teach Informative Writing and provide details about the Informational Writing Mini-Unit resources I have created for Kindergarten , 1st and 2nd grade students .

Learning about informational texts is so important for our students.  I hope these resources will help make it fun and easy for you to teach your students about the genre. When we give our students plenty of opportunities to read and write non-fiction in their younger years, we are setting them to successfully tackle the content-specific texts they will encounter in their later years!

Exploring Different Genres: Ideas for Teaching Fiction and Non-Fiction Writing in KS1

The importance of teaching fiction and non-fiction writing .

Before we dive into specific strategies, let's take a moment to appreciate the value of teaching both fiction and non-fiction writing to young learners.

By exposing pupils to various genres, you nurture their creativity, critical thinking skills, and ability to communicate effectively.

From sparking creativity to boosting critical thinking, we'll explore the fantastic world of writing for these young learners. So, let's dive in!

Engaging Strategies for Teaching Fiction Writing

1. Story Starters: Begin each writing session with a thought-provoking story starter to ignite your pupils' imaginations. Encourage them to develop their own characters, settings, and plotlines, fostering their storytelling abilities. If you would like some story-starter ideas, head to our blog!

3. Visual Prompts: Utilise engaging visuals, such as pictures or videos, to inspire your pupils' writing. Encourage them to observe details, incorporate descriptive language, and build a narrative around the visuals. If you would like more information on how to use visual prompts in your class, check out our free lesson plan!

Effective Strategies for Teaching Non-Fiction Writing

1. Real-Life Experiences: Encourage pupils to write about their personal experiences, such as field trips or family events. This helps them connect writing to their own lives, making it more meaningful and relatable.

2. Research Projects: Introduce research skills by assigning topics of interest to your pupils. Teach them how to gather information from various sources, take notes, and organise their findings into a non-fiction piece.

3. Informational Guides: Challenge pupils to create their own how-to guides or informational brochures on subjects they are knowledgeable about. This allows them to practice organising information and presenting it in a user-friendly format.

Additional Tips for Effective Teaching

2. Celebrate Achievements: Recognise and celebrate pupils' writing accomplishments to boost their motivation and self-esteem. Display their work in the classroom or create a class anthology to showcase their progress.

3. Continuous Professional Development: Stay updated on the latest teaching techniques and trends by actively participating in professional development workshops, conferences, and online teaching communities. This will provide you with fresh ideas and support from fellow educators.

4. Effective Classroom Management: Implement strategies to manage disruptive behaviour, such as clear expectations, positive reinforcement, and engaging activities. A well-managed classroom creates a conducive environment for focused writing.

By implementing these strategies and staying connected with educational resources, you can make a lasting impact on your pupils' writing skills.

How to plan and teach a Non-Fiction Unit - Stress Free!

how-to-plan-and-teach-a-non-fiction-unit

Stressed about having to plan and teach a non-fiction unit, let alone a year’s worth of them? I get it. It takes time. It’s a process with many aspects. Collecting quality resources, while covering all areas of the curriculum: reading, writing, speaking and listening, science, maths… It’s a lot to get your head around! In your first few years of teaching it can be especially overwhelming. Even as an experienced teacher, it still takes me a LOT of time and creativity.

However, I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You don’t need to start planning every unit of work from scratch and you certainly don’t need to do it all on your own!

One thing many teachers may not realise is that whilst I *love* creating stylish decor to help beautify classrooms around the world, there’s something I’m equally passionate about. Helping teachers take the stress out of planning and teaching. This is why I created a series of done-for-you, differentiated non-fiction units that can be integrated across multiple areas of the curriculum and spread over the ENTIRE term!

There are so many busy teachers who have the motivation to prepare their own lesson plans as well as gather and/or make the resources to accompany them. But the reality is, they just don’t have the time! So being able to assist other teachers plan and teach a non-fiction unit – stress free? Well, that’s priceless!

Below, you’ll find some of my fave print and go non-fiction units – including what little learners seem to love the most – animals and bugs!!

non-fiction-units

non fiction lesson ideas ks1

This resource is designed to inspire a love of books in Key Stage 1 pupils while developing their understanding of literary classifications. Young learners distinguish between fiction and non-fiction and then delve deeper into genres and topics. Included is a planning sheet that outlines three lesson plans, complete with objectives, a list of necessary materials, activities, and follow-up suggestions to reinforce learning. There are two ready-made labels for fiction and non-fiction to facilitate a hands-on card sorting activity. Accompanying these are 10 pages, each featuring six diverse book covers in black and white, which can be cut out for an interactive classification game and a range of activities. Examples of book covers are ‘Learn to Play the Piano’, ‘I have a New Daddy’ and ‘My Book of Fairy Tales for 7 year olds’. Tailored for Key Stage 1 children, the book covers lend themselves to lots of speaking and listening and predicting. Follow up with sorting of real books and / or children can design their own book covers using the cards for inspiration. The resource is a useful addition to library skills and any celebrations around Books.
