Resumes & Cover Letters
Consider your resume and cover letter to be a professional marketing tool where you can best represent yourself to prospective employers, volunteer sites, graduate programs, and more. Both documents should be concise and tailored to a target audience – read below for tips on how to do so.
Resume Building
While it’s useful to maintain a running document of everything you’ve done, knowing that the average recruiter spends less than 10 seconds scanning a resume, it’s important to make the best use of space and to choose wisely when selecting your most relevant experiences, skills, and accomplishments. Here are the most common categories used in college level resumes:
- Education
- Relevant Coursework
- Skills
- Projects
- Activities or Honors
When you get to the point of having multiple types of experiences, it can be helpful to separate out the Experience category into Relevant Experience and Additional Experience. It does not matter if the experiences are paid or unpaid, but that they are relevant to your applications. Anything that is important for them to see, needs to be on the top ¾ of the page.
Other categories include International Experience, Leadership Experience, Research Experience, Community or Campus Involvement, Volunteer Experience, etc.
If possible, keep your resume to one page, but for graduate students and experienced professionals this may not be possible. You still want to make sure you’re including only the most relevant information unless asked for a CV, which is more commonly requested for academic and research-based positions. This article can provide relevant tips for that format.
Writing Effective Descriptions
Instead of writing out what you did for each job, volunteer opportunity, club, etc. consider what you accomplished and if there are any tangible results, try and quantify them. For example, instead of saying you created a social media account for your summer retail job, you could say you ‘Created a Facebook page to increase awareness of their downtown store, resulting in 100+ engagements’.
If you are running low on available space, dedicate more space to the more technical or relevant opportunities vs the more obvious duties of other jobs, like retail where it can be assumed what a cashier does every day. This is also where you can embed relevant keywords you are seeing in various job postings and demonstrate your skills in them (if applicable). Check out this list of Action Verbs to start each phrase off right.
If you are really stuck and need assistance in drafting a resume, the Writing Center can assist with both online and in-person appointments. Once you’ve drafted a resume, the SCI Career Consultant can review it.

Cover Letter Building
While not every company requires a cover letter, they can be helpful if you haven’t spoken to anyone at the company before. It could be your only opportunity to provide more insight to why you are applying to the company/role, what you bring to it, and why you’d be a good fit. It’s also a great way to prepare for a first-round interview and understanding your motivations for applying (since the interviewer will ask).
Cover letters are even more important if you’ve been referred to the company or a particular role by a current or former employee. Referrals are consistently a great way to land a first interview, so be sure to include their name. It helps recruiters know that someone is willing to vouch for you or that you took the extra step to attend one of their recruitment events, network with an employee, etc.
Check out this handout to start drafting a tailored cover letter and be sure to have someone review it.

CV and Resume Writing
Throughout your Pitt career and beyond, you will want to keep an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume: an organized listing of your employment, volunteer and extracurricular activties as well as skills you build in your experiences. While the Resume is typically shorter than a CV, you want to keep a detailed record since you can always slim it for a particular application format.
Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume:
A CV or Resume is an organized listing of your qualifications and experiences to show what you can do and what you know, presented in a succinct and structured format. (Here we use the terms interchangably and will refer to them as CV.)
The CV is often read quickly by people evaluating you for a lab position, job, school admission or funding. Yours must be neat and readable with the most important information for the reader upfront and easily accessible. You will need to reorganize it to change emphasis for different types of applications.
CVs have many uses:
- For you- it organizes your career information in one place -so keep updating a running list of your experiences.
- Should they hire you? Give you the scholarship? Accept you into their program?
- For a first job in a field it will be used to determine your starting salary
- Later in your career it will be used for contract renewals and promotions
Organize the CV for your audience:
Consider who will be reading your application and what they are looking for. What do they want in a researcher/employee/student? Why are they offering fellowships? What is their "mindset" when reading your application? How many applications are they probably reviewing and how much time do they have to spend on this?
Start here to build your CV:
First, brainstorm all of your experiences, outside of the classroom and even inside, beginning with high school. List anything that might possibly be relevant. Cast a wide net and include any honors and scholarships.
Organize your information into categories.
Choose useful, descriptive, job-specific headings for your categories. (ex. Research Experiences, Teaching Experiences, Leadership Experiences)
Order the categories in order of importance for this position . And brag - put honors and scholarships up top if relevant. Focus on your audience for this particular application and on readability for these readers.
Within each category:
- Begin with most recent events in the category
- Include specifics (people, places, dates) to connect to your audience and give yourself credibility
- Describe your role using power action verbs (download list below) and succinct language.
- Document skills you have developed. Skills from lab courses count if you feel like you developed them well enough to repeat them without much new training. Let people know what you can do !
Format with a simple, approachable style that makes you want to pick up the CV and read it first in the stack. Use "white space" well and don't cram in your information. Look for examples in the Biosc Advising Office and online.
Check that important information is easy to get.
PROOFREAD! We cannot emphasize this enough.
Ask for advice. Show it to friends, family, classmates. Bring it by the Biosci Advising Office. Let people know the qualifications of the position so they can evaulate it with that in mind. Ask them to be critical. Pitt's Career Center will also help.

Why this resume works
- Your business resume can benefit from a resume summary if you’ve been in your industry for at least 10 years. While not required, it can showcase your work experience and any specializations you’ve acquired along the length of your career.
- While you’re job hunting, verify that you’re qualified for the role as some positions require a master’s degree. An MBA will really help you stand out among other applicants on your business resume.
- We suggest you show how you met those goals using numbers and statistics, as they’re easy to read and speak volumes quickly.
Business Student Resume
- You already have a track record in increasing traffic, boosting brand visibility, and using analytics to grow brands. Leverage past success to propel your potential in your business student resume.
Experienced Business Analyst Resume
- It’s a good idea to include abilities that are mentioned in the business job description of the position you’re applying for (if you’re honestly skilled in those areas). Don’t fib, but don’t sell yourself short either!
- For example, if you’re skilled with SQL, try writing about the impact you made using SQL in a previous position.
Experienced Business Development Manager Resume
- Reverse-chronological formatting displays your most recent or current position at the top, which will likely be most similar to the position you’re seeking.
- This format also shows the evolution of your career history naturally. Your latter work history may detail more basic duties and less responsibility, and you’ll want the job you’ve listed first to clearly showcase your advanced expertise.
- Choose a template that’s both professional and eye-catching.
- Be consistent with your resume formatting . Headings, font, and even punctuation (or lack thereof) should be consistent.
Business Administration Resume
- Display how you helped cut costs, increased productivity, automated processes for optimal performance, etc.
Business Management Resume
- Avoid personal pronouns, adjectives, or non-active verbs. Instead, start with strong verbs, such as “defined” and “beat.”
- Make your way over to our free resume checking tool for more on using active verbs, getting your grammar just right, and ensuring your resume’s spit-spot.
- While optional, a well-written, concise couple of sentences highlighting your best self, coupled with a few impressive metrics, can be a slam dunk for an interview.
- Keep each bullet point’s content fresh and varied.
HR Business Partner Resume
- Many times, adjusting the spacing, margin size, or even rearranging the sections can do just the trick.
- Accomplish this with a resume career summary if you boast at least 10 years in your field. It’ll set you apart from the rookies! You can leverage your summary to remind the employer that you want this position and are aiming to contribute to the rise of the company with any noteworthy specializations you have under your belt.
- A final formatting tip—prominently display your contact information close to your name, so a busy employer can readily and easily contact you; don’t give them a reason to trash your resume.

Stay tuned for a quick step-by-step guide on how to make your own business resume. Use this guide and a business resume template above to get your foot in the door.
Choose a professional resume template that compliments the company’s tone. A business degree opens the door to a myriad of jobs, which range from casual to formal roles. As a business development manager in the healthcare industry, you might choose a more traditional resume template. On the other hand, if you plan to your use your business degree to be a project manager in the travel industry, a creative resume template could work well.
Within your resume’s contact header, add the business title you desire beneath your name. Get this information directly from the job description. For instance, a business development specialist might also be called a business development associate or business development representative. Adding this professional touch is one way to show the company you care about getting the details right.
If you have a master’s degree in business, list that first. Follow that with your bachelor’s. If you’re freshly graduated, consider adding relevant coursework, such as Principles of Operations Management or Business Finance, beneath your most recent education as well as your GPA if it’s above a 3.5 and any academic awards that are relevant to your degree.
Ask yourself how your work tangibly impacted a company or further developed its operations and processes. Did you identify gaps in reporting, which led you to oversee the development of more robust documentation? Did you experiment with pricing to improve customer lifetime value? Did you increase annual revenue through a referral program you created?
Your resume’s job description bullet points are a chance to share quantifiable business accomplishments rather than daily responsibilities. And your business cover letter is the perfect place to dive into the details of how you made those accomplishments happen.
Your business background means you could be skilled in communication, CRM, negotiation, employee onboarding, or even technical abilities like SQL, Python, or data analysis. It depends on the direction you’ve gone and the company’s job description that’s caught your attention. Try jotting down your skills. In a new column, jot down the skills mentioned in the job listing. Which ones are the same? Those are the business skills to include in your skills section.

A resume is an important tool for your job search as it offers a page or two where you can display your relevant skills and qualities for a job.
Resumes help employers make hiring decisions and help you get your first interview. That’s why it matters how you structure your resume and what information you decide to include.
Your resume should communicate four things:
- Your qualifications
- Who you are
- What makes you different to employers and recruiters.
When applying for an internship or job, you need a resume that helps you stand out in a sea of applicants. Ultimately, the purpose of a strategically targeted, polished resume is to get you an interview.
