best puzzle games

A mong the various games we have played, puzzle games have been a part of our childhood, and we all have loved the way such games acted as brain teasers and helped stimulate our nervous system.

As we grow up, we need such mind-teasing games for the healthy working of our brain cells . And as most of our time is spent online, why not make room for online puzzles and keep our brains refreshed?  Therefore, my new list will include the best puzzle games you should consider downloading on your device for all the perplexity you need.

15 Best Puzzle Games For Android and iOS

Chess light – puzzle game, brain it on, monuments valley, escape puzzle game, move the block, jigsaw puzzles real, smart: brain games and logic puzzles, sudoku – puzzle game, 2048 original.

Hocus is a mind-bending perspective puzzle game. It is currently one of the top-rated puzzle games on the Play Store right now. In this game, your goal is to get a cube to the red finish marker as fast and efficiently as possible. It might look easy to play but can be pretty challenging.

One of the most incredible things about this game is that it lets you create and play other user-created puzzles. With over 100 puzzles, you can easily play this game for a few hours whenever you are bored.

  • Pros : Pick up and play game, easy to learn
  • Cons : Can get repetitive
  • Availability : Android and iOS

Amid all the available puzzle games online, Threes has a similar concept of sliding tiles to form a particular number, in this case, three and its multiples. When you start playing the game, it will give you a walk-through on how to play it so that it gets easier for you.

Threes: best problem solving games

It follows a simple drill of sliding the tiles and joining them to add the two titles. Even though it is an easy process, it will still take a while to join the tiles. It starts with making a three, followed by other multiples of three. Each step expects you to make one, and you have to use your brain while sliding to form the desired number.

The game has ease of flow, and once you start playing it often, you will enjoy it, and sliding tiles to form numbers will be your everyday goal.

  • Pros : Addictive in a good way
  • Cons : Can stutter sometimes

Mekorama is an adorable 3D puzzle game just like Treasure Tracker and Monument Valley. In this game, you control a cute little robot and navigate it through different puzzle rooms, each with different mechanics. Due to the variety in obstacles, the game keeps being fresh.

Whenever you finish a level, you unlock five more. So you won’t ever feel stuck, and the progression will be pretty open-ended. With over 50 levels to unlock, the game is quite a delight for those who like a challenge but want a laid-back experience.

  • Pros : Looks quite good considering its a mobile game
  • Cons : Might not run properly on older phones

Chess Lite

Chess light is a puzzle game based on, you guessed it, “Chess!”. The game puts you in over 180 different chess scenarios where you have to find a way to win. The game is free and comes with no ads, which is rare for games these days.

There are even six different difficulty options if you find the game is hard or too easy. You can even receive a hint if you feel like you are stuck. Fans of chess will definitely want to check this game out.

  • Pros : Huge variety of puzzle combinations
  • Cons : Have to know the basic rules of chess

Brain It On is an apt puzzle app to use when you want to challenge your brain. When I used the app, I could not help but scratch my head into how exactly can I play the simplest-looking game. The game works in a horizontal format and has a number of levels to reach.

You have to begin playing without doing much; open up the app, and select the first level (the first few levels are unlocked while others are locked), and start puzzling. Before you start, you have to make any shape of your choice on a plain canvas, beginning the main way of playing the game.

Brain It On: best puzzle games

This means that the app needs you to do something on the canvas to execute a particular task. For instance, there will be a situation wherein you have to make something so that a glass kept on the canvas falls on the ground.

As the levels increase, the difficulty of the puzzle increases, which makes Brain It On one of the best Android puzzle games as well as on iOS. Furthermore, you can upgrade the app to get rid of ads.

  • Pros : Simple UI
  • Cons : Need to watch ads for hints

Monuments Valley is a puzzle video game wherein you are required to use your brain and help the character reach the destination. Anyone talking about puzzle games ought to mention Monument Valley. Hence,  it had to make an entry on my list of best puzzle games.

Monument Valley: best puzzle games

While in the game, you have to play to puzzle to start playing the actual. The game is interesting as it has a 3D setting, and it is pretty fun to play.

The only drawback of the game is that it is a paid app, which slightly gets disappointing. Nonetheless, if spending money on apps is not a problem for you, Monuments Valley 1 and 2 are must-have puzzle games.

  • Pros : Intriguing concept
  • Cons : Paid app

Empty

Empty is a puzzle game similar to Monuments Valley, at least in terms of its artistic design. It’s a very zen-like puzzle game with a laid-back approach. Meaning you can play the game and not feel frustrated but rather healed.

The gameplay is quite simple, where you have to clear the room by rotating it. The game aims to teach us the value of simplicity in life with each level. It is entirely free and comes without any ads, which is quite rare for a game nowadays.

  • Pros : Relaxing music and style
  • Cons : Simplistic gameplay

The Two Dots Puzzle game moves around the two dots present on the app. You have to connect the dots in a way they meet each other, and a connection between the two is formed.

When you open up the app, the app will give a gist of how to play the game by letting you connect the two dots available on the screen. Once the process gets completed, you can start with the first level of the game, which will eventually take you up the hill of the more and more levels (with new ways of playing).

Two Dots: Best games to tease your brain

Keep in mind that you can connect the dots horizontally, vertically, or form a right-angle but can’t connect them diagonally. Additionally, you get limited moves, so you have to hurry up and use your brain before you make a move.

When you are at a particular level, you will be given some targets to make you cross the level. The initial levels are pretty straightforward, and you will feel like a pro until you reach more levels and realize it’s not as easy as it appeared.

  • Pros : Engaging
  • Cons : Can lag sometimes

Escape Room is one of the puzzle types wherein you have to look for objects smartly. The game has a storyline where a girl introduces you to the game’s concept, following which you can start playing.

With a medieval backdrop, the game also provides you with a limited number of hints so that you move ahead with ease in situations when you get stuck.

Escape Puzzle Game

The game begins with the first level (and moves up more levels), wherein you have to find a given number of objects and use them in the scene itself. You will have to tap on the various things placed and find the hidden things or combine two things to repair an item — the possibilities of proceeding ahead are many.

While the Escape Room is intriguing, the difficulty level makes it one of the well-suited puzzles for adults. However, kids can also play it to sharpen their brains.

  • Pros : Story format
  • Cons : Adverts
  • Availability : Android

Move The Block is one of the classic sliding puzzles (among free puzzles) where you are required to slide the objects (in this case, blocks) to win the puzzle. The puzzle game has a number of levels under Basic, Premium, and Old categories (eight to be precise), with each level coming with sub-levels.

move the block

When you start with the first level, you will be guided around the game and the options available for you to use and play with ease. The game is an interesting one, and as you move forward, you won’t even realize how addictive the game will get, and you will end up playing it more than the allotted time period.

Of course, as you move up the levels, the levels will get difficult, and you might need the help of the hints available at your disposal. This is where the game’s drawback appears; to get each clue, you have to watch an ad video that makes it annoying.

  • Pros : Daily Rewards
  • Cons : Mid-gameplay ads

If you haven’t played a jigsaw puzzle, have you ever played a puzzle at all? One of the classic puzzle games of all time, the game’s name is enough to be one of the best free online jigsaw puzzles.

The game follows the simple process of joining the puzzle pieces and forming a single picture. The app provides you with various options to choose from: be it pictures related to nature, animals, aerial, and many more, and you can pick the ones you like and arrange the jigsaw puzzle.

Jigsaw: best puzzle games

Before the pieces are spread around, you will be given a small glimpse of the whole picture to start playing. You can further view the image again and again to get a better idea.

The game makes sure it twists your brain and acts as an element of nostalgia when jigsaw puzzles are actual board games.

  • Pros : Various Puzzle options
  • Cons : Ads, ads, ads

Skillz is one of the mobile puzzle games that tease your brain and puts your brain to some good use.

The app lets you decide if you want to play as a single-player or play a multi-player game. Upon choosing, there will be a number of levels, and you will be taken to the first level. As a reminder, other levels will be locked until you pass the initial ones. Hence, skipping levels is not an option. In addition to this, there is an option to replay the game if you weren’t satisfied with your previous performance.

Skillz: best puzzle games

The levels include searching for a particular number or letter among the same numbers or letters, thus testing your brainpower and speed. The game proves pretty addictive as the urge to cross all the levels takes over once you start playing it. However, the presence of ads is a problem.

  • Pros : Single/Multi-Player option
  • Cons : Time-based gameplay

Among the various puzzle game apps, Smart is a game that includes several brain teasers and logic puzzles, giving us an opportunity to play free puzzles.

The game has various color-coded levels (Blue, Violet, Gold) and other levels (Left & Right, Block Game, and Pipeline), each level coming with loads of sub-levels for you to enjoy the puzzle maker.

Smart: Brain Games

Selecting the levels and then the sub-levels will let you into your puzzles with tutorials so that you can get the hang of the game before starting. There are various puzzle options, which will ensure you don’t get bored with the game. While the gameplay is as smooth as butter initially, the more levels you reach, the more difficult it gets.

Overall, Smart is a fun game to play and rates you in areas such as memory, imagination, problem-solving, flexibility, speed, and attention so that you eventually improve in the areas. Additionally, you earn points and diamonds each time you cross a level.

  • Pros : Loads of game options
  • Cons : Slightly confusing app

Sudoku is another puzzle that is a classic and one of the best mobile puzzle games. Bringing the daily newspaper puzzle game to your smartphones, Sudoku is all about arranging numbers both vertically and horizontally.

The number count is from 1 to 9 in a 9×9 grid (also a standard format). You have to ensure that each grid doesn’t have the same number to make the perfect Sudoku. The game allows you to get hints, undo a particular entry, erase it or pencil it off.

Sudoku

Additionally, Sudoku gives you daily challenges for further brain stimulation, lets you change the game’s theme, and lets you remove ads by making purchases.

While the game appears difficult when you start playing it, it eventually gets fun to play and easier once you get the hang of it. Being one of the vintage free puzzle games, it reminded me of the days when I used to play Sudoku from a newspaper back in school.

  • Pros : Great brain teaser
  • Cons : Takes a while to launch

2048 is one of the types of puzzles we have heard of before. It is a sliding puzzle requiring us to slide the blocks and eventually arrange four blocks in the ‘2048’ manner. While there are many apps with the 2048 moniker, it is present on my list of best puzzle games due to the high ratings and downloads.

2048 Original: Problem solving game

When you open up the app, you are asked to select the grids (4×4, 5×5, 6×6, 8×8, 3×5, 4×6, 5×8, 6×9) you want to play the game on. Once you select the grid of your choice, you can start playing the game. Remember, grid sizes mean that the difficulty is more with an increase in grid size.

2048 Original is one of the best puzzle apps, given that it activates the brain cells so badly, fulfilling the purpose of a puzzle game. If you want to tease your brain hard, you need 2048 on your smartphone.

  • Cons : Frequent ads

Types Of Puzzles

For those who think that puzzles are all about finding the puzzle pieces and completing a jigsaw, you need to know that there are many kinds of puzzles available for us to play with. These include riddles, trivia puzzles, math puzzles, pattern guessing, logic puzzles, and many more. This list contains puzzles such as trivia, sliding, logic, paper-and-pencil puzzles, among its various types. Hence, read on for more:

Destress with these mobile puzzlers

Creating a quality puzzle app is not easy, even for the best of the best on the Play Store . Balancing gameplay elegance, intricacy, and satisfaction while adhering to a reasonable difficulty curve is a task only the top puzzle games can achieve. The key is to reward players for their deductive reasoning skills rather than demanding snap decisions, incentivizing some deeper thought and caution before proceeding. Build it around an entertaining gameplay loop with a sweet artstyle, and you’ve got a great puzzle game, ready for the best budget Android phones. From calming apps like Mekorama to addictive “just one more go” experiences like Melon Maker, Puzzle apps are primed and ready to keep you guessing.

It's no secret that puzzle games are a little over-represented on the Play Store, with slews of imitators riding the slipstream of market leaders, so we're here to highlight the best of the best. This genre of apps is a little oversaturated on the Play Store, given its flexibility in terms of setting and artstyle, so we’d like to share our favorites in this roundup of the best puzzle games that stand out. You can put your new high-performance gaming phone away for these apps, but don't forget your thinking cap.

1 Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon

Netflix Games has published Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon on the Play Store, bringing the popular puzzle roguelike to Android. While this game does differ from the original platformer, the puzzle-based gameplay is superb, offering falling block gameplay any Tetris fan should recognize. The mechanics are simple enough to understand while remaining challenging to master, which is why the gameplay loop is so addictive, all without pesky monetization to ruin the experience.

You will need a Netflix account to play, but beyond that, this is a premium release that stacks up to its console and PC counterparts.

2 Baba Is You

Baba Is You puzzle game roundup

Baba Is You takes a traditional Sokoban puzzle game and turns it on its head through the use of cryptic words. You'll unlock specific abilities and areas by pushing certain words together, which is ultimately how you solve each puzzle. Still, these solutions aren't easy, as this is an incredibly challenging game, but the solution is the reward, and it feels great once you finally get past a puzzle that was previously stumping you.

Baba Is You may be a short game clocking in at 7 hours to beat , but it's one of the best puzzle games on the platform, which is why it's a great title to start with for today's puzzle game roundup.

3 Path of Giants

A slick puzzle game where you'll control three characters, each offering unique skills to see you progress through each stage. As you can guess, you'll use these characters to solve each stage's puzzle, with the challenge growing with each solved stage. The graphics are excellent, the gameplay is enjoyable, and it's easily played in bite-size sessions to ensure this is a title best played in your downtime.

Best of all, what you see is what you get, as this is a premium release, so you're free to enjoy the game in its entirety once you pay $4. Not bad, not bad at all.

4 Golf Peaks

Golf Peaks is styled as a miniature golf game, but it's actually a puzzle game (which is why it's on today's list). There are more than 120 levels to explore, spread across ten worlds. Cards are used for movement as you decipher which cards will get your ball into the hole, making for a logic puzzler you will have to spend time thinking about, but that's where the fun is to be found, illustrating why this game is so appealing. It's designed well and offers tons of fun. What's not to like?

Sliding tile puzzle games may have a reputation for being simple, but Gorogoa is anything but. Sure, you'll slide some tiles around, as that is part of the core gameplay, but thanks to some striking art and abstract puzzle solutions, this game goes way beyond moving a few tiles. Imagine if Salvador Dalí created a video game, and you're getting close to the abstract play within this release. While the game is only two hours long , it's a heck of a ride that shouldn't be missed.

PUSH is a fun minimal puzzle game where your single objective is to push a bunch of buttons in the correct order. What is great about this setup is that there are no timers and no tutorials. Heck, there aren't even any boss fights. This game is solely focused on gameplay and gameplay alone. Essentially, what you see is what you get, and what you get is a competent puzzle game that offers a stress-free experience.

7 Hidden Through Time

Hidden Through Time is a stunning hidden object game that offers wonderful art, cute animations, and enjoyable gameplay. Mostly you'll spend your time deciphering clues to find all the hidden objects in each level, and each stage is pleasantly animated, making it easy to gaze at the screen for hours as you hunt down every last hidden object. If you enjoy titles like Hidden Folks but are looking for a splash of color to brighten the experience, then you'll love Hidden Through Time.

8 G30 - A Memory Maze

G30 - A Memory Maze is a minimal puzzle game that offers a unique story about a person suffering from a cognitive disorder. It will be your job to piece together their memory by solving two-part puzzles of scattered text and random images. You'll spend most of your time rotating these images to form larger pictures. The secondary puzzle element comes into play as you cycle these pics through words displayed at the top of the screen.

These words ultimately tell a story, but you'll first have to solve each puzzle before you can piece together the entirety of the tale.

9 Hidden Folks

Hidden Folks is a stylish hidden object game that's a joy to look at and play. The art is hand-drawn and consists of black-and-white pen and ink designs. Players are tasked with finding a particular person hidden in each drawing, much like a Where's Waldo book. This is easier said than done since you'll have to peel back and move objects in each environment to hunt down these hidden people.

Unlike many of the hidden objects on the Play Store, Hidden Folks offers a highly interactive experience, which has a lot to do with the wonderfully engaging art style.

Hocus is an indie puzzle game that exudes a minimal style. It will be your job to navigate a cube through a series of optical illusions. There are 120 hand-crafted levels to explore, and if you get tired of these levels, you can jump into the optional level builder to design your own. What's great about this system is that you can share these homemade levels through a code or card, which means you can jump into levels created by other players if you wish.

Blue is a popular release in the color-themed puzzle game series from Bart Bonte . The game's goal is to change the color in all the title's fifty stages to blue. If you get stuck, hints are available, though ads will play unless you pay to remove them through an in-app purchase. Trial and error is the key to victory, especially if you plan to complete all 50 levels.

12 Shadowmatic

Shadowmatic took its sweet time coming to Android, but the game is so pretty we can forgive the late arrival. The game's setup is extremely simple. All you do is spin and tilt one or more of the game's 3D objects to form a shadow that displays the puzzle's desired shape. Things grow more complex when multiple objects are in play. The beautiful 3D graphics create a relaxed atmosphere perfect for short or lengthy gaming sessions, though you'll need some beefy hardware to run this title.

13 I Love Hue Too

I Love Hue Too is a psychedelic puzzler where harmony, geometry, perception, skill, and magic intersect to create an enthralling puzzle game. Puzzles are solved by shuffling tiles to create harmony with the colors provided. There are more than 900 puzzles to unravel within this release and multiple play modes, which should keep players busy for a long while. Oh, and the game contains six ambient tracks that help set the mood for this trippy puzzler.

14 Bridge Constructor Portal

The Bridge Constructor series from Headup has seen a few releases on mobile, sporting all kinds of themes, combining gameplay elements from these themes with classic bridge construction gameplay. The most popular title to combine interesting elements is Bridge Constructor Portal. It offers familiar Portal gameplay crossed with bridge-building action, resulting in a good time solving all portal-laced puzzles.

This is a premium release you can snag for $5, and there's extra DLC once you beat the main game that you can pick up for $2. Seeing that the main campaign is 13 hours long and that the DLC adds even more content, you'll have plenty of puzzles to solve for a small investment.

15 Railbound

From the same creator as Golf Peaks, Railbound is a puzzler where you'll lay down train tracks to solve the game's level-based challenges. There are more than 200 puzzles to solve, all revolving around trains and track laying, with adorable graphics attached and a couple of cute pups to boot. So if you're a fan of Golf Peaks and want to see what's new from the same creator, Railbound is the obvious choice, and best of all, it's just as great as its older brother.

16 Mekorama

Mekorama draws inspiration from similar isometric puzzle platformers, such as Monument Valley, but that's an easy thing to forgive when the games you imitate are solid to start with. Much like the titles that inspired this release, you can expect tons of humor and personality, and the developer has implemented a user-friendly way to pay what you want for the full game unlock, which is a nice touch.

17 Lost Words: Beyond the Page

If you're big into platformers, but enjoy them most when they offer puzzle mechanics, then Lost Words: Beyond the Page should be right up your alley. This is a chill game where you'll literally use the letters in words as platforms to traverse each stage. These words, of course, tell an evolving story, which is entertaining enough, but it's the puzzle-based platforming where the game really shines.

Taking a page out of Baba is You's book, you'll have to think creatively about how words can be used to solve the game's 2D puzzles, all at your own pace.

18 Linelight

Linelight is an atmospheric puzzle game centered around navigating threads of light to complete puzzle challenges; with a celestial theme that immerses you in the experience. Gameplay-wise, Linelight gets really creative with the kinds of puzzles it offers; particularly the ones themed around only moving when the player is moving. Linelight focuses on its gameplay, with over 200 puzzles to solve, but its presentation is also very absorbing, from the silky movements to the beautiful music.

19 Melon Maker: Fruit Game

Melon Maker has been making waves for a while due to its curiously magnetic appeal, presenting an interesting blend of match-3 and Tetris mechanics. The gameplay boils down to dropping fruit into a transparent box, and combining fruits of the same color to keep the pile from overflowing. The difficulty curves smoothly as the fruits get bigger the longer you play and the circular nature of the fruits makes stacking difficult. Its cute artstyle, satisfying gameplay, and insane replayability create an experience that's just impossible to put down.

If you’re looking for your next big app addiction à la Vampire Survivors , check out Melon Maker.

The best puzzle games are easily installed from the Google Play Store

So until the next update, enjoy the latest puzzle titles that have struck our fancy as the best of the best.

15 best puzzle games for Android

The Room Old Sins best puzzle games android

Puzzle games used to be a simple genre with a simple idea. You solve puzzles for time-killing enjoyment. However, the genre ballooned in a big way on mobile. It’s one of the most popular genres on the entire platform. It started with simple viral games like 2048 and evolved into genuinely enjoyable experiences like Monument Valley.

These days, you can find some seriously good puzzle games on Android in terms of both graphics and gameplay. Gone are the days of super simple mechanics and graphics with goofy ideas, with intense and complex apps with creative stories and good graphics. This list changes fast as new puzzle champions emerge. Here are the best puzzle games for Android.

We’d like to give an honorable mention to Bridge Constructor Portal ( Google Play ). It hasn’t been updated since 2021, but it’s still one of the best puzzle games.

The best puzzle games for Android

Baba is you, the eyes of ara, linia super, machinarium, monument valley 1 and 2, one hand clapping, papers, please, the past within.

  • The Room: Old Sins

Slayaway Camp: Free 2 Slay

Price: $6.99

Baba Is You screenshot

Baba Is You is one of the more interesting puzzle games on Android. The graphics aren’t all that special, but its low-fi style helps the developers do all sorts of wonky things. The game lets you change the rules of the game itself by moving around programming blocks. You use these programming blocks to change the rules in such a way that you solve the puzzle. Each change has interactions with the other changes to create all kinds of unexpected reactions.

It’s truly one of the most unique puzzle games, right up there with ones like Monument Valley. This should be more popular than it is.

Price: $4.99

The Eyes of Ara is one of the newer puzzle games on the list. It reminds us a lot of classic puzzle-adventure games like Myst. Players explore a world looking for clues, unlocking secrets, and gathering the story from snippets found in the game world. It plays in a 3D world with exploration and surprisingly decent graphics. The developers round out the experience with achievements, support for about a dozen languages, and a minimal game UI that puts the game world first and foremost. There isn’t a whole lot wrong with this one, but the controls are occasionally wonky.

Price: $5.99

Hitman GO is a puzzle game where you plan assassinations. It’s a turn-based game. You select your move and the NPCs take theirs. You use their movements against them as you infiltrate the area and take out your targets. The goal is to take them out without arousing any suspicion. The diorama-style graphics work well here, and there are multiple ways to solve many of the puzzles. You also get things like disguises to get past guards. We like this one because it’s a premium game, it feels good to play, and the difficulty scaling is pretty good.

Price: $1.99

Linelight is a puzzle game where you navigate a level to its end while avoiding the other colored lights. The game boasts over 200 puzzles across six worlds. The graphics won’t win any awards, but we think the game still looks nice. The only control is movement so you move along the lines, avoid the other lights, and make your way through each level. There is a storyline to play through as well, although it is a little basic. Despite its Google Play description, you do need to time your movements well, and it’s not all that relaxing of an experience. It’s cheap, the puzzles are fun, and there are no in-app purchases to get in the way.

The same developer also made Lara Croft GO ( Google Play ), a similar diorama-style puzzler to Tomb Raider’s protagonist.

Price: Free

Linia Super is another minimal puzzle game, and this one is the second game in the Linia franchise. It boasts over 200 levels with varying levels of difficulty. The game itself is pretty simple. You use rhythm and timing to draw lines and hit the various shapes that the game tells you to hit. You can play any chapter at your leisure, so there’s non-linear progression. It’s another free-to-play game with plenty of levels and good puzzle mechanics.

Price: Free demo / $1.99

Machinarium is one of the classic mobile puzzle games. You play the role of Josef, a robot trying to save his girlfriend from a gang of bad robots. You traverse the game world, solve puzzles, and progress the story until you reach the end. We like this game. The graphics fit well with the atmosphere, and the puzzles are abstract enough to feel fun, although you may need to look at the hint book more often than you’d like. The game also features achievements and cloud saves. It’s not the longest game on the list, but it’s worth its price tag. The developer, Amanita Design, has some other good puzzle games on Android as well.

Price: $3.99 each

Monument Valley 1 and 2 are some of the most popular puzzle games on mobile. They use MC Escher-inspired puzzle mechanics. You twist and turn portions of the level to progress. The games aren’t difficult. They boast a more relaxing experience rather than a challenging one. The Monument Valley games do look fantastic, though. The art style is definitely to be applauded. The first game includes a handful of levels along with the Forgotten Shores DLC ($1.99 extra). The second game is a bit longer but not by much. These are classics.

One Hand Clapping is one of the more unique puzzle games on this list. It’s a puzzle platformer where you jump around and progress the game as usual. However, the main mechanic when solving puzzles is your voice. You sing into the game to do things like build bridges, raise platforms, and do other things. We’re suckers for unique game mechanics like this. The game also features controller support for the platformer portion of the game. It’s cutesy, and it’s fun to play since you’re using your voice as well as your fingers to solve puzzles. We think the game is a tad expensive for what you get, and that’s probably our only real gripe with it.

Papers, Please is a simulation-puzzle game. You play the role of an immigration officer and your role is to check the passports of the incoming flow of people from Kolechia into Arstotzkan. You’ll need to check each passport for factual accuracy and deny those with fraudulent passports. You earn money for your family for each person you let through, but if you let the wrong person through, bad things happen and it’s your fault. The game is a little stressful at times but in a satisfying way. You’ll need to pay attention and memorize a few things to do well. This was out on PC a long time ago, but the Android version officially launched in 2022.

Price: $2.99

The Past Within is a cooperative multiplayer puzzle game. One person plays in the future and the other in the past. You use clues from each other’s eras to solve puzzles. Both players experience their side of the game uniquely, so there is some replay value if you want to play the past and also the future. It’s also cross-platform with PC, Mac, iOS, and eventually, the Nintendo Switch as well. The game is rather short at only about two or three hours. However, you do have to play the game twice to see everything, so four to six hours overall. It’s entertaining, and one of the few good cooperative puzzle games on Android.

Price: Free

Quadline is our third minimal-style puzzle game on this list. Players move the environment around until the desired effect is achieved. For instance, one side of a box may have a thicker line. Your goal is to move that thicker line somewhere where it achieves some sort of symmetry. The earlier levels are pretty simple, but these puzzles get pretty complicated later. The game boasts over 175 levels, no timers, a dark mode, a colorblind mode, and more. There also isn’t any text so some controls you’ll need to figure out on your own.

The Room series

Price: $0.99 / $1.99 / $3.99 / $4.99

The Room franchise is one of the oldest and most successful puzzle game franchises on mobile. There are four games in the series at the time of this writing. The first two are classic puzzle games. You figure out puzzles to progress until you finish the game. The third game in the series introduced multiple endings and a slightly heavier narrative. Finally, the most recent game, New Sins, takes place in a dollhouse.

All four games have some similar elements, including outstanding graphics, escape room elements, and clever puzzle designs. They are also fairly short games. However, the inclusion of multiple endings gives the later titles some replay value. These are classics in the puzzle game space on mobile and are must-plays for puzzle fans. The games range from $0.99 to $4.99 each. They also don’t need to be played in sequential order, so you can pick which one you want.

Slayaway Camp: Free 2 Slay is a horror puzzle game. You play the role of SkullFace, a slasher movie villain, who is intent on slaughtering everyone in his path. That’s basically what you do. You progress through levels by slaying everybody. The simple, blocky graphics take a lot of the intensity out of the violence, but even so, this isn’t a game we recommend for kids. There are also some extras like a mini-game, multiple killers to unlock, and more.

Price: Free / $2.49

Vodobanka Pro screenshot

Vodobanka is one of the more unique puzzle games on Android. The player takes control of a SWAT team. The goal is to breach a structure and get the hostile people before they execute the hostages. It has a bunch of levels, including some added as recently as 2021. It doesn’t have the best graphics, but the concept is pretty neat as players clear rooms on their way to the objective. The premium version is also inexpensive with most of the content being available in the free version.

Price: $0.99

Zenge is a relaxing puzzle game with simple graphics, but good mechanics. Your goal is to complete each puzzle, most of which are geometric. The completed puzzles tell a story that you progress the game to see. The developers wanted this to be a relaxing experience. Thus, players experience no stars, tutorials, energy counters, or anything like that. You just pop in, play the game, and stop when you’re done. It’s certainly not the longest game, but it’s still pretty good.

Top 25 best puzzle games for iPhone and iPad (iOS)

25 essential iOS puzzle games to start your collection

Updated on April 19, 2023 - re-checked the list. This genre is right at the heart of the mobile gaming experience. Therefore, we decided to create a list of the best iOS puzzle games for iPhones and iPads !

It fits the environment perfectly - small, largely static (or at least slow-paced) titles that don't require lavish visuals or complex controls, and which will reward however much time you're able to commit to them.

It's not surprising to find that the App Store is positively brimming with puzzle games , then. But finding the best puzzle games for iOS is no easy feat.

They come in all shapes and sizes, from old-fashioned match threes to crazy experimental flights of fancy. And the ground between those two extremes is vast. Imagine this - nowadays, you can even find puzzle RPGs (which was unheard of a few years back)!  Also read:

Best puzzle games for iPhone and iPad

We're sure that you have a few select ones that we haven't listed, but that's partly because of what we mentioned above. There are just so many!

Instead, we've tried to focus on the few select titles that really stood out to us and distinguished themselves in some sort - be it they've got unique graphics, never-before-seen mechanics or especially tricky perplexities. That's what we tried to look out for, so while you might see some premium titles (like Gorogoa), you'll also find free-to-play ones that can be plenty of fun (such as Pink)!

So, let's take a look at some of the best iPhone puzzle games , shall we?

1 Monument Valley 2

Monument Valley 2

Like the original, Monument Valley warps reality and assaults your eyes with otherworldly landscapes. Rarely has a runaway mainstream hit felt so daringly experimental. With the problem-solving aspect falling somewhere in between 3D and mind-twisting, it is a great title to get you started.

The graphics are gorgeous, but while that's an aspect that deserves our appreciation in a different post, you'll find that this creation meets all the expectations. That's why it's one of the best puzzle games iPhone users can get their hands on, even years down the line.

2 Text Express: Word Adventure

Text Express: Word Adventure

Text Express: Word Adventure is an interesting puzzle game where you have to solve crosswords and a lot more. The gameplay is great, and the story and atmosphere are also remarkable. Text Express is a perfect choice for both children and adults if you want to relax and enjoy your time.

Text Express: Word Adventure was nominated for the best mobile puzzle game at the Pocket Gamer Awards 2022 and won it! The users of our website consider it to be the best puzzle of the year, and we definitely agree with them!

Gorogoa

A rare masterpiece, Gorogoa combines a clever picture-shifting mechanic with a beautiful storybook art style. It's quite wonderful but challenging at the same time. We added it as one of our best iPad puzzle games since the bigger screen is going to make it a lot more enjoyable.

Also, Gorogoa is best served in one sitting though because the story is a mesmerizing one and you won't want to miss a thing! You'll find stunning hand-drawn illustrations, unexpected obstacles, and an alluring narrative. What else could you want?

4 Grindstone

Grindstone

One of the finest titles from the initial Apple Arcade offering - which is really saying something. Grindstone's tactile match-three battling is a real treat. It's nothing like you would expect from a classic match-3 game, and that is mainly thanks to its unique approach.

Players will have plenty of levels to grind their stones (if I may say that), and with such great-looking graphics, it's an absolute treat. Grindstone is a must-try for all the match-three enthusiasts. We even have some Grindstone beginner tips to help you out!

Prune

Puzzlers used to be functional looking and targeted at the logic centres rather than seeking any kind of emotional response. Prune turns all that on its head with its achingly beautiful grown-'em-up gameplay. It's not what one might expect at the start, but it's one of those unique approaches to the genre we mentioned in our introduction.

Prune has been, and still is, one of the most beautiful iPhone puzzle games out there - not only that, but it's also extremely relaxing, although it poses a challenge every now and again.

6 The Room: Old Sins

The Room: Old Sins

Even four entries in, the intricate locked-box puzzles within puzzles of The Room series continue to enthral. When it's as perfectly executed as The Room: Old Sins, we could happily take several more.

While it is a premium title, it's well worth its price. Not only do the graphics amaze us with their realism, but also the gameplay is spot on - it's everything one could want from a real mystery experience. Talk about unique-looking games executed well! We have a video review for The Room: Old Sins , so if you're curious about how it plays, make sure to check it out!

Threes!

This fiendishly clever number-based title should have a place on every mobile device. Accept no imitations.

With plenty of spark that has (somewhat) cooled off over the years, Threes! is, and has been, a title that stood out. It's easy to understand why that is, especially when you have a title with so much potential playtime. And no, before you ask, you don't need to like maths to like Threes! - in fact, it could be quite the opposite. You might even start (slightly) liking maths after you've played it.

8 Ticket to Earth

Ticket to Earth

You've probably noticed that in our introduction we mentioned RPGs - well, here's one! It's not often that you find a title with a rollicking story, but that's precisely what Ticket to Earth provides. At heart, it's a block-matching title, but one that adds in compelling RPG elements and glorious comic book visuals.

The premium price is well-justified by its quality, so if that's what you're looking for in this genre, don't feel guilty about it. Ticket to Earth is one of the best iPhone puzzle games, and that won't change anytime soon.

9 Mini Metro

Mini Metro

At your disposal is the whole modern world, all the megacities that today have a subway. Will you be able to organize the transport system in such a way that everything functions without delays and other problems? You are given a complete list of tools for work, but to dispose of them correctly is the very puzzle that will test your skills as a manager and builder.

For those of you eager to try it, you can take a look at the tips for Mini Metro that might open up some new paths for you (no pun intended).

10 Yankai's Peak

Yankai's Peak

A highly challenging abstract puzzler from Kenny Sun that keeps drawing you back in. Rotating coloured triangles into place across its compact levels is a mind-bending delight. It might seem simple, but it's one of the best iOS puzzle games that does exactly what it's meant to do without much effort.

This hand-crafted gimmick of a game is ideal for testing your logical thinking in the direst situations. It could even be called a little psychedelic, if you may. It all depends on how you look at it.

11 The Witness

The Witness

The Witness might look and even feel like a first-person adventure, but its beautiful free-roaming hub world is underpinned by fiendishly clever line-drawing puzzles. It is the ideal title for kicking back and relaxing at the end of an exhausting day, because thanks to its beautiful atmosphere, it will fill you right up with energy!

12 Evergarden

Evergarden

You thought you knew all about the most enjoyable iOS puzzle games? Think again. This enchanting experience takes the advanced match-and-evolve gameplay of Triple Town to the next level, with a hexagon-based grid and a beautiful 3D art style.

Evergarden feels like an enchanted title, where each move could give birth to something new and intriguing. And that's only part of the story. You should definitely give this one a try, it's as good as it gets!

13 Good Sudoku

Good Sudoku

To the uninitiated, Sudoku can feel like a foreign language. Zach Gage feels your sense of mystification and has made this comprehensive take on the popular pencil-and-paper intellect booster. Whether you're a Sudoku newbie or a veteran, Good Sudoku will more than live up to its name.

And no, you don't need to know the what s and how s of this popular title to ace it. You can start slow, and move your way up to more advanced sudokus.

Pink

Bart Bonte is renowned for his colour-coded abstract puzzlers, and Pink is the brightest yet. Each brain-teaser is a clever, meta delight that will challenge your rods and cones to the next level. While the levels might seem simple at the start, they'll quickly evolve into something a little more... fantastic.

If you're feeling up for the challenge, give it a shot! And while you're at it, you could also check out Green, Red, Yellow, or Blue! They're all equally amazing, so pick your colour and get to solving them!

15 Campfire Cooking

Campfire Cooking

Games with a cooking theme have been around for a while, but none quite seemed to integrate the "cooking" part as well as Campfire Cooking. The beauty in this title is not from the graphics alone, but from the gameplay too. It is one of the few iPhone puzzle games you can almost always find time to play!

A grid-based title with some of the most delicious presentations around. In place of blocks and tiles, here you're shuffling around marshmallows and cooking pots. Tasty.

Empty.

A stylish casual puzzler that asks you to rotate a series of boldly decorated rooms through 360 degrees, matching up colour-coded items of furniture. Empty. is a minimalistic title, but with a massive appeal once you get the hang of it. In essence, it's quite simple. At a closer look, it requires more than just a couple of twists and turns.

You won't decorate in Empty, but instead, make things disappear. Now THAT'S a unique approach. Don't forget to read our Empty. review , since it'll give you all the details you need to get started on this stunning iPhone puzzle game.

17 Photographs

Photographs

You thought there could be a list without as much as a pixel graphic title? Wrong.

It is not at all what one might expect though. A narrative with a real heart, Photographs will tug your heartstrings just as much as it tickles your neurons with its block-sliding gameplay. It's one of the absolute most satisfying puzzle games on iOS we ever played, hands-down. Just read our Photographs review .

Each story is different, and each one is uniquely beautiful in its own sense. One aspect that cannot go overlooked though, is its cleverness. You actually need to pay attention to everything, because nothing is 'just there". Every feature of perplexity has a deeper meaning.

18 Framed 2

Framed 2

Have you ever dreamed of creating an interesting comic? While you might not be able to actually do that, you can control the action of the characters! In Framed 2, much like in Framed, you'll have to arrange panels in order to reveal a certain outcome to a story.

It's clever, it's unique, but most certainly it is fun. A challenging title that features mysteries, fun stories, and great-looking graphics.

19 Song of Bloom

Song of Bloom

You don't typically equate the puzzler genre with strong narratives, but Song of Bloom achieves that rare balance with some aplomb. It's the story of a search for meaning, told through a bunch of eclectic problems that require logical thinking, keen observation, and experimentation.

With ever-changing art styles and fitting music for each level, you'll have to figure out some rather... unique ways of solving the mysteries. Looking for one of the greatest iPhone puzzle games? Give this one a shot.

OXXO

Another bright, minimalistic title from the developer of Zenge and Scalak. OXXO is essentially a 3D sliding puzzle, with plenty of clever flourishes.

What starts off as a simple one-dimensional title, will soon come to be a true 3D experience that will leave you scratching your head. It's challenging, despite its simple approach. A true masterpiece. Don't forget to read our OXXO review , since it'll tell you more about this challenging iOS puzzler - it might even make you want to try it for yourself!

21 7 Billion Humans

7 Billion Humans

A game that utilises the basic principles of coding doesn't exactly sound like a barrel of laughs, but 7 Billion Humans pulls the whole off with style and substance. It seems complicated at best, but you'll soon discover that it's all for good reason. When the world gets overtaken by robots, nothing will seem too simple after all.

However intricate it might look, if you just follow a few simple principles, you'll find yourself loving 7 Billion Humans more and more every second. We have a 7 Billion Humans review too - so, if you're not sure whether or not this puzzler is right for you, make sure to check it out.

22 Golf Peaks

Golf Peaks

It might look like dull isometric golf, but Golf Peaks is actually an ingenious card-based puzzler that has you laying down golf shots in the right sequence. The simple graphics make this (slightly) complex title more appealing, giving it a rather cartoonish look, even though the levels will soon prove to be straight out of hell.

Golf Peaks is a clever reminder that looks can be quite deceiving, especially when it comes to mobile games. It's a top-notch puzzle game for iPhone that will not disappoint you, golf fan or otherwise - you can read our review of Golf Peaks if you need further convincing!

23 The Gardens Between

The Gardens Between

You don't often get the 'have to' phrase before premium games, but this one is a must. The Gardens Between is hand-down one of the best iPhone puzzle games out there, and for all the right reasons.

This side-scrolling puzzler ingeniously plays with time in various (clever but accessible) ways and marries its temporal manipulation with an utterly dreamy art style. It's absolutely stunning. We even have a review of The Gardens Between , so if you're curious how it actually feels while playing, make sure to read it.

ELOH

You don't normally associate puzzlers with rhythm, but that's precisely what ELOH brings to the table. This charmer has you deflecting streams of pips, forming delightful percussive loops along the way. It's a most relaxing experience, where you get to solve various stages by enjoying a good beat.

Basically, it's related to basic geometry, and it's quite fun. After solving the most complex puzzles you'll have the true 'Eureka' moment. ELOH is going to bring you true Zen - what more could you ask for?

25 Baba is You

Baba is You

Baba is You has a quite unique approach to the whole puzzle genre. It got a few awards for it, and for a good reason, it's hard to think of a concept that's new in today's world. Namely, the game looks like the old Sokoban, where you need to move blocks in a certain order to finish a level. Baba is You has expanded this concept and went much further.

At each level, you have some fundamental rules written in blocks. Like 'Rock| is | Stop' means that you can't go through rocks. But you can move the block that says |stop| and guess what happens? You can move through obstacles! Breaking the basic rules set is much more fun than you think, basically, you can shift them however you want, and find different ways to complete the levels. Mindbreaking, isn't it?

7 Best Mobile Logic Games

The Room Epilogue Trailer Screenshot

Playing games based on logic is a great way to not feel guilty about wasting hours staring at your phone; if someone asks you why you’re on your phone so much, you can just tell them you’re training your brain by playing logic puzzles ! Not all logic games are based on the same premise, however, and it may take some time for you to discover just what kinds of logic games you’re into. For example, some logic games focus on numeric puzzles, while others focus on solving mysteries or brain teasers. The gameplay of logic games may differ from game to game, but the central theme in all of them is the same: solving puzzles.

Some puzzles are overt (such as brain teasers or mazes) while some are more subtle (such as detective mysteries), but the only determining factor of logic games is definitively puzzles. Playing puzzle games is the perfect way to keep your brain active and alert and is just generally a great way to pass the time. This is a comprehensive list of the best mobile logic games to play when you’ve got a few minutes to spare.

This list is comprised of the best mobile logic games on the market, and although they’re all games based on logic, they’re definitely not all the same. This list offers a variety of logic puzzles and games that will keep you entertained no matter which you choose; they may all be logic games, but they’re all unique and very different from each other. If you get bored of playing one of them, you can always just play a different one for a completely different puzzle experience!

Brain it On!

Screenshot of Brain It On! Level

Brain it On is one of the most popular logic games on the market, and it’s no wonder why. Brain it On features hundreds of different puzzles and brain teasers that will leave you stumped in the best way possible! All of the puzzles in this game are physics-based, so if you’ve got a heavy interest in physics, this game is perfect for you!

If you ever come across a physics puzzle that you just can’t solve your way out of, Brain it On’s got you covered with a “Hint” feature that can be utilized to help you solve it. This feature is great because it doesn’t take all the fun out of it by solving the puzzle for you, it helps you solve the puzzle on your own by giving you small nudges in the right direction.

Logic Puzzles – Brain Riddles

Puzzle from Logic Puzzles - Brain Riddles

Logic Puzzles is another really popular mobile logic game, over 1 million people have downloaded it on Google Play alone! This game features a lot of different puzzles with varying levels of difficulty, but the most popular puzzles are definitely the “who-done-it” mystery puzzles that the game likes to throw at you. In these puzzles, the game gives you a mystery, and you have to solve it completely by using a handful of meager clues.

In addition to the mystery puzzles, this game also has mazes, brain teasers, and more! There are few puzzles that this game doesn’t offer, so if you tend to get bored of games easily, you should definitely give Logic Puzzles a shot.

Roll the Ball

Roll the Ball Gameplay Screenshot

Roll the Ball is an aptly named game that features a mixture of both classic puzzles and mazes. This mobile game has multiple levels, the goal of all of them being to get a small ball to the end of a maze. To get the ball to the end of the maze, however, you first have to build the maze. At the beginning of each level, the game will present you with a jumble of random puzzle pieces. You’ll need to fit the puzzle pieces together in a way that allows the metal ball to roll to the other side, unobscured by obstacles.

With every puzzle you complete, the game will only become more difficult; you’ll never have to worry about getting bored with this game’s levels, because they just keep getting more difficult the further you progress! If you love tile puzzles and practicing your problem-solving skills, you should definitely check out Roll the Ball in your app store.

The Last Express

Woman in The Last Express

The Last Express is a bit different than the other mobile logic games on this list, in the sense that it’s a murder mystery game. In The Last Express, you have to solve a grisly murder aboard a luxurious passenger train. There aren’t very many initial clues to go off of, however, and knowing that the murderer is trapped on board with you is enough to keep the mystery exciting and keep you motivated to solve it. In this game, you’ll have to explore the massive locomotive and look for clues, investigate potential suspects, and collect incriminating evidence.

The Last Express is the perfect game for aspiring detectives and puzzle fans alike! There’s a lot of logic and critical thinking that goes into solving a murder, especially when the murder takes place on a private train crammed full of potential suspects. If you love getting to play detective and practicing your deductive reasoning skills, you should definitely give The Last Express a download.

The Room Screenshot

The Room is one of the most popular mobile logic games on the market right now, and for good reason. This game combines classic mysteries with complex puzzles in a delightfully intricate way that will leave your brain in knots! Not only does this game feature intricate puzzles and confounding mysteries, but it also presents a simple yet incredibly intriguing story that will draw you in long before the puzzles do.

In The Room, you have to solve numerous complicated puzzle boxes to unlock more parts of the story. As more and more puzzles are solved and more bits of the story are revealed, it will become increasingly evident how to solve the mystery. The Room is a fantastic game for puzzle lovers and true crime lovers alike; it’s also the perfect game for those who tend to speed through mystery games too quickly, because it makes you solve numerous challenging puzzles before it gives you more clues!

Slaughter Horse

Slaughter Horse Title Screen

Slaughter Horse is similar to The Last Express in the sense that it’s in the murder mystery genre, but it’s far from your average who-done-it mystery game. Slaughter Horse is a criminally underrated mobile logic game that involves serial killers, otherworldly shapeshifters, grisly murders, and ponies! If you’re a fan of true crime documentaries and My Little Pony, then you’ll love everything about this game. If My Little Pony was turned into a horror movie, it would be the premise of Slaughter Horse.

In Slaughter Horse, you play Hector Silvermane, a detective pony sent from the Princess of the Sun herself to investigate a series of disturbingly grotesque murders in a remote town. Once you arrive at the town, however, you realize that the situation is much direr than originally anticipated; the town has been reduced to just a handful of terrified ponies, and the killers have disguised themselves to look exactly like the original townsponies. No one knows who to trust, and no one is safe from the killers’ wrath, not even you. If you want to save yourself and the few remaining townsponies from a fate worse than death , you’ll have to figure out who the hidden killers are, and fast . If you love murder mystery games with unique twists, you should definitely download Slaughter Horse as soon as possible (you won’t regret it).

Can You Escape

First Level of Can You Escape

Can You Escape is a pretty self-explanatory game that involves escaping from various rooms with only your wit and a handful of meager objects. In this game, you’ll be locked in various, mysterious rooms with seemingly no way to get out; you’ll need to solve puzzles, find hidden objects, and use your wit if you ever want to see the light of day again!

Finding your way out of one locked room is bad enough, but trying to find your way out of 12 locked rooms sounds impossible! This game currently has 12 challenging levels that players can participate in, with each level containing an even more challenging room. If you think your wit and your deductive reasoning skills are up to the task, try taking on all 12 of Can You Escape’s rooms!

Researching the efficacy of Lumosity

What we did

Lumos Labs conducted a randomized study of Lumosity brain training and published the results in a peer-reviewed research journal.

In it, half of the 4,715 participants who completed the study trained five days per week, for fifteen minutes each day on Lumosity while the other half did online crossword puzzles as an active control.

What we found

After 10 weeks, Lumosity users improved more than the control group on our assessments of working memory, short term memory, processing speed, problem solving, fluid reasoning, and overall cognitive function.

These results are promising, but more research is needed to determine the connection between improved assessment scores and everyday tasks in participants' lives.

Next questions

Future research should address the risk of inadvertent experimenter bias and the risk of attrition bias in this study, as both the Lumosity and crossword groups had approximately 50% attrition rate. As with all scientific research, there is also a risk of publication bias.

10 Mobile Games That Will Sharpen Your Mind In Your Downtime

10 Mobile Games That Will Sharpen Your Mind In Your Downtime

Mobile gaming apps have come a long way in the last few years, and that’s probably a bit of an understatement. The rise of Apple Arcade has meant that folks are actively choosing to pay for and play quality mobile games. It’s a far cry from the days of “this is a game I have to play while on the toilet.” Though I’m sure those still exist. What we love most about the developing platform is that there are dozens of game genres available for our phones: shooters, RPGs, puzzle games, etc. But, if we’re talking about simple, brainless entertainment and time-passers, brain training games and puzzle apps have emerged as one of the most wildly popular mobile game genres on the planet.

We love brain training games because they aren’t just fun, they condition our brains to be better and sharper. Memory retention, abstraction, divided attention, word memory — a good brain game has it all. And if you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, we think it’s about time you did. Here are 10 of the best mobile brain games, puzzle apps, and concentration games out there.

Can Games Make You Smarter?

Playing games can make you smarter in a number of ways. For example, strategy games like chess can improve problem-solving skills and critical thinking, while memory and attention-based games can improve memory and attention. Learning games, such as those that teach coding or math, can help to improve specific skills and knowledge.

And you don’t have to sit down in front of a board with a group of people to get the benefits. Mobile games can be just as good for brain health if they’re designed to challenge cognitive skills. Of course, not all mobile games are created equal in terms of their cognitive benefits (no, that first person shooter isn’t going to help with memory loss).

The 6 Best 3D Brain Teaser Puzzles for Handheld Challenges and Spatial Problem Solving

From board game Kanoodle to cast-iron playthings.

3d brain teasers

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. Why Trust Us?

At Popular Mechanics , we’ve got an office full of curious puzzlers and calculated tinkerers. So, to find out which puzzles are worth spending that precious mental energy (and money) on, we called some in, dropped them off in a common space, and Slacked some colleagues to help put them together. If you’re a puzzle fiend and love to get your brain working, below are the ones that most impressed our resident nerds.

Game on and check our picks for the best retro gaming consoles , board games for families , and beginner gaming PCs .

The Best 3D Brain Teaser Puzzles

  • Best Overall: Educational Insights Kanoodle
  • Best Upgrade: Craighill Tycho Puzzle
  • Best Hanayama: Bepuzzled Labyrinth Hanayama
  • Best for Kids: Uncommon Goods T-Rex 3D Puzzle Building Kit
  • Best 3D Puzzle: Original 3D Crystal Puzzles Grand Castle Deluxe

What to Consider

Types of puzzles.

Brain teaser puzzles cover a broad range, from multi-piece posers you take apart and reassemble to 3D jigsaws.

Multi-piece puzzles are either lock-based (which involve pulling apart and putting together geometric shapes via turning, clicking, maneuvering, or shimmying each piece) or spatial (which involve organizing and arranging items based on color, shape, or both).

Japanese puzzle maker Hanayama is one of the most popular brands in this space, specializing in handheld cast-iron pieces that require unlocking and removing pieces from one another and putting them back together. Hanayama rates its puzzles using difficulty levels 1 to 6, with higher numbers indicating more difficulty. Of course, these are subjective ratings, but after testing a few, we believe the higher-end Hanayama puzzles involve creative problem-solving that the average person finds difficult.

While traditional 2D jigsaw puzzles are assembled on flat surfaces and resemble a box art image, 3D jigsaws are slightly more challenging. They require spatial awareness—a.k.a., an understanding of how things fit together in space—and actual instructions. Sometimes, the pieces are lettered or numbered. But, like most puzzles, you can kick it into hard mode by tossing those instructions.

Are you someone who enjoys reassembling puzzles? If not, stick to something simple that doubles as a display once it’s complete. Logic puzzles from Hanayama aren’t always the best to show off on a shelf or desktop, but higher-end pieces from Craighill are practically made for showing off. 3D jigsaw puzzles are similar to regular jigsaw puzzles—you likely won’t remember where all the pieces go if you disassemble and reassemble it several months apart.

How We Tested

“Brain teaser” is a bit subjective, but we settled on products that enhance and stimulate spatial reasoning skills, critical thinking, and logic—with a healthy dose of fun. We only focused on puzzles that involve pulling pieces apart and putting them together, playing with colors, and tinkering.

We researched popular puzzle brands and landed on a few major ones: BePuzzled, Hanayama, and Kanoodle-maker Educational Insights. We ignored any products that looked flimsy or cheap. We also avoided any wooden puzzles, as their difficulties are hard to gauge, they’re mostly geared toward children, and, frankly, they remind us of that peg game from Cracker Barrel —also cheap. Lastly, for the sake of brevity, we avoided anything that seemed like a multi-pack overkill , focusing on quality instead of quantity.

BePuzzled, Hanayama, Uncommon Goods, and Educational Insights sent various puzzles for us to try out in our offices. I emptied each box onto a table and told my colleagues, “Hey, come over here and work on these while I watch you tinker.” Through two weeks of work-time breaks, lunch hours, and random communal puzzling sprees, we gauged each puzzle below on effort (How hard is this to figure out? How much time is this taking?), difficulty (How many people did it take to solve?), value (Would we do this puzzle again?), and material (Is it plastic or metal?).

Although we typically keep a 2D puzzle on the table for screen breaks, the puzzlers at Popular Mechanics found that the best 3D puzzles were the straightforward ones that needed little to no explanation. Anything that felt the most enticing to pick up and play, either due to visual attraction or office gossip/word of mouth, topped our final list.

Educational Insights Kanoodle 3D Brain Teaser Puzzle

Kanoodle 3D Brain Teaser Puzzle

Kanoodle recently became a TikTok sensation , and after spending hours tinkering with it at the office, picking up games over breakfast, and watching colleagues play it, I can see why: It’s highly addictive. Holistically, it’s got everything I want in a brain teaser puzzle—it’s colorful, pocket-sized, easy to learn, super stimulating, and it makes me feel like a genius when I solve it.

Kanoodle’s goal is simple, but it always proves challenging. The board has 48 spaces, 12 uniquely shaped, color-connected beads, and a booklet of 200 puzzles, sorted in numerical order from easiest to hardest. To play, pick a puzzle from the booklet and set your pieces on the board according to the puzzle’s design. After setup, you’ll notice you have pieces left over. The goal is to fit those pieces on your board without moving the design you just laid out.

It’s comparable to clearing lines in Tetris, except instead of clearing lines, your prize is being able to shut your Kanoodle case. There are also a few pages of 3D puzzles, which involve stacking play pieces on top of each other.

Educational Insights claims Kanoodle expands spatial reasoning skills and enhances critical thinking. Several resources for children with autism recommend Kanoodle for developing fine motor skills, including National Autism Resources and Therapy Shoppe .

“It’s a fun, engaging way to develop problem-solving skills,” says Digital Content Producer Amber Joglar , who spent hours playing this at her desk instead of working (sorry, Amber). “The puzzles get more challenging and involved as you move through levels, and it’s a nice way to get a brain break that doesn’t involve screen time.”

The game is excellent for ages 7 and up, and we especially recommend it for adults looking for a non-screen activity . (It’s helped me calm down on more demanding days.) Its clamshell, pocket-sized packaging makes it easy to travel with and, as evidenced by my office mates, it’s easy to learn and play with others. We simply can’t get enough of this game.

Original 3D Crystal Puzzles Grand Castle Deluxe 3D Brain Teaser Puzzle

Grand Castle Deluxe 3D Brain Teaser Puzzle

If this looks annoying to put together, you’ll be happy to know that it very much is. And if you like that sort of challenge, the Grand Castle Deluxe is a frustrating yet satisfying build—the total opposite of the cardboard T-Rex. Rather than slide its parts into place, you assemble this puzzle by correctly stacking and interlocking its 105 transparent plastic pieces. Each piece has tiny (hard to read, due to its clear plastic) letters that correspond to others… somehow . Frankly, we don’t even know if we’re doing it right—it doesn’t come with instructions, and after visiting a URL on the back of the box, its PDF instructions aren’t quite helpful, either.

Its rigor isn’t solely due to a lack of instructions but also its design—every piece looks the same, even if they’re in different shapes. After unboxing and dumping each plastic bag full of pieces out on a table, we had a hard time figuring out where even to start.

It’s not impossible, though. Producer Barry Knoblach took a long while to lay out the pieces and assess the situation. “As someone who prefers finishing puzzles instead of seeing how long they take to complete, I was frustrated when I eventually got stuck,” he says. “The castle’s spires are especially difficult, and no directions came with the box. The puzzle is fun once you get the hang of it, but lack of clarity on its parts knocks my rating of it down.”

Bepuzzled Hanayama Labyrinth Metal 3D Brain Teaser Puzzle

Hanayama Labyrinth Metal 3D Brain Teaser Puzzle

The objective of this two-piece puzzle is simple: Remove both rings and put them back together. It’s not as easy as it looks. A nub on each end of the horseshoe-like ring marked “Laby” prevents the two rings from pulling away from each other, while both sides of the other ring present two different labyrinths. You must guide the nubs on one ring through the mazes on the other ring, and try not to hit any dead ends on the way.

I tinkered with this Hanayama-branded brainteaser for 20 minutes before giving up. Meanwhile, one of my colleagues fiddled with it for two hours only to get nowhere. Our Assistant Reviews Editor, Adam Schram , successfully pulled both rings apart by feeling his way through the maze while talking and keeping his mind occupied on other things—and in 10 minutes, no less.

The puzzle has a great weight to it. And while it’s made of metal, unlike Craighill’s pieces, it doesn’t stink of it. Both pieces feel like solid cast iron, lending a pleasing tactility and heft. The brand says this puzzle has a difficulty level of 5 for “experts,” but your mileage may vary if you’re anything like Schram.

We also tested the Hanayama Infinity puzzle , in which users pull out bearings from a seemingly invincible figure-8 loop. Staff Photographer Trevor Raab figured it out in less than 10 minutes despite its level 6 difficulty. We do like its design quite a lot, though.

Uncommon Goods T-Rex 3D Puzzle Building Kit

T-Rex 3D Puzzle Building Kit

Not so much a brain teaser as it is a 3D puzzle, this T-Rex 3D puzzle-building kit is still a mild head-scratcher. It takes the traditional 2D puzzle and changes it into a layered pile of 3D cardboard, where you slide pieces into slots to make a shape. It has 72 numbered, precut pieces you pop out of place and attach to each other. The box says it’ll take 60 minutes to complete, but Raab assembled it solo in less than 30.

Because of its easy difficulty level and unique 3D build, we highly recommend this for children learning spatial awareness. It’s also a great art project when complete, as a simple paint job would make this pop in a bedroom or on a desktop. Although it’s made of cardboard, its pieces are sturdy and it doesn’t feel cheap.

Uncommon Goods 540 Colors 3D Brain Teaser Puzzle

540 Colors 3D Brain Teaser Puzzle

Probably our favorite puzzle to look at and assemble as a group, this sphere is a blast. It has 540 pieces and cycles through a rainbow ombre gradient, transitioning from red to pink to orange to yellow as you spin it. Each plastic piece is slightly curved, and they’re all satisfying to slot together. The finished puzzle sits on top of a plastic pedestal to display.

Four of us assembled this in less than two hours, separating the pieces by color and then attempting to link each bright hue with its washed-out transitional pieces. It’s remarkably sturdy when put into place, and it’s fun to assemble a puzzle in a shape that should, theoretically, be smooth.

The only problem we had with it was its transitional colors. It was difficult to tell which faded, white-washed pieces fit where, as some color differences were hard to make out. The transitions between each colored area isn’t as smooth as we’d like. Piece placement definitely benefits from a second opinion and a flashlight.

Craighill Tycho 3D Brain Teaser Puzzle

Tycho 3D Brain Teaser Puzzle

The Tycho puzzle is hefty and beautiful, with eight interlocking stainless steel and brass components. You spin it on a countertop to break it apart, then reassemble it by sliding pieces in place. In its core is a hidden cavity that can hold a surprise—large enough for a tiny fortune-cookie-sized message, really—and it’s got a solid weight of nearly 2 pounds . It’s a tough cube puzzle that feels brutalist by design.

We’ve been passing this cube around in the office to see who can assemble it the fastest, and a group of four colleagues got it in less than 30 minutes, though it took lots of tinkering and talking through to reassemble. Many love its weight and feel, and several (myself included) say it looks mesmerizing on a shelf or countertop. It’s definitely a statement piece in a way, maybe establishing authority on a boss’s desk or classiness on a mantle at home.

It also stinks like coins. After toying with the puzzle, the combination of brass and steel had our hands smelling like pennies. If you prefer your puzzles scentless, this may not be for you. It’s also relatively expensive due to its craftsmanship and heavy materials.

We also tried the very similar Tetra puzzle from Craighill, which was as big of a hit in our offices as the Tycho. Though we prefer the Tycho due to its eight-piece makeup (rather than the Tetra’s four), we still enjoyed it. It’s $98—less than the Tycho and still hardy enough to make a statement.

A good app will provide diverse support mechanisms, whether it’s tutorials for first-time users, FAQs to answer common questions, or customer service to address specific concerns.

In-app purchases often play a significant part in enhancing app experience. They might offer advanced features or additional resources, allowing users to unlock their full potential when solving problems. However, it’s essential for the app developers to offer a clear and transparent payment system, helping users to make informed decisions on whether the additional content is worth the investment.

Problem-solving apps rely on user reviews and feedback to constantly improve their features and functionalities. Therefore, it’s essential to have an efficient way for users to communicate their experiences, suggestions, and issues. Developers should ensure that they actively monitor feedback and provide prompt responses to users who might need assistance with the app.

When it comes to navigating through an app, a well-designed interface and smooth user experience will keep users engaged and motivated to solve problems. This includes logical menu structures, consistent design elements, and clear labeling for different sections or features. Visual aids, such as color-coding or iconography, can further help users find their way around the app, streamlining the overall problem-solving process.

By addressing these aspects, problem-solving apps can create a holistic experience with clear solutions and support mechanisms in place. When users feel empowered to access the help they need, it enables them to tackle challenges effectively, enhancing their overall problem-solving experience.

9. Poem or story challenge

Most team building problem solving activities for employees revolve around science, math, and logic. Poem/story challenges rely on writing skills and are sure to appeal to the language lovers on your team.

Each player receives a limited word bank to use to create a story or poem. Then, players have a few minutes to craft their pieces. Afterward, everyone reads out or screen shares their creations.

Here are a few word challenge activities you can do remotely:

  • Found poems or stories : Participants make poems or stories out of words they find by visiting websites, searching emails, glancing out the window, or taking a walk or drive around the neighborhood.
  • Random word generators : Teammates use a random word generator to populate a word bank, and must use each word in the poem or story.
  • Poetry magnets : Group members make poems using poetry magnets. You can send poetry magnet sets to employees and assemble the verses on a cookie pan during a Zoom call. Or, teammates can play with poetry magnets online .
  • Page poems: Participants receive one page of a book or magazine, and must make a poem or story by blocking out other words so only the chosen text remains visible. This activity is part storytelling, part art, since story crafters can illustrate the pages as part of the design.
  • Ransom note stories or poems : Players cut out letters from magazines and must form new words to make poems and stories. Or, players can receive a mix of random letters, form words, and run the text through a ransom note generator .

These activities are suitable for teams and individual players.

10. Moral challenge

Some problems are ethical rather than factual. Moral judgment plays just as important a role in the decision-making process as technical prowess. Players can flex their moral problem-solving skills by tackling ethical dilemmas or social puzzles.

Here are some social problem solving games online:

  • Moral machine
  • Scruples – the game of moral dilemmas
  • Morality play

To play these games, either download the apps, or pull up the website and then screen share the prompts. These games are best played when discussed as a group, because the more belief systems and opinions, the harder an issue is to resolve. These exercises provide practice for real-life conflict resolution.

You can find similar challenges on our list of online personality tests .

11. Frostbite

Frostbite is a group game that hones team leaders’ communication skills while sharpening teammates’ listening and cooperation skills. The premise behind the game is that a group of explorers gets caught in a snowstorm and must build a shelter. Frostbite has paralyzed the leaders’ hands and snow-blinded the rest of the team. The leader must give the team instructions to build a tent that can resist arctic winds.

To play Frostbite, each teammate wears a blindfold. Then, the leader gives directions. Once the structures are complete, players turn on a fan to test whether tents can withstand the wind.

Frostbite is usually an in-person game, however you can also play virtually. In the remote version of the game, teammates construct tents out of cards and tape, while the leader surveys the scene on screen.

This exercise demonstrates the challenges of leading remotely, as teams need to operate with minimal oversight or supervisor observation. Therefore, instructions need to be clear and direct to be effective.

12. Virtual Hackathons

Hackathons are events where participants have a set amount of time to design and pitch a new product or solution. This type of event originated in the programming world and is often used to create new apps, however you can apply the game to any industry or school subject.

Virtual hackathons are online versions of the event. Teams enter the competition, then work with each other via virtual meeting software or remote work communication platforms to design the solution. At the end of the competition, teams pitch ideas to a panel of judges and a winner is decided.

To run a virtual hackathon, first announce the theme of the event and collect sign-ups. So that no teams work ahead, hint at the general idea of the issue, and only explain the precise problem when the event begins. Then, give teams anywhere from a few hours to a few days to complete the project.

13. Improv games

Improv games are excellent problem solving activities. These exercises force participants to think and respond quickly to keep scenes moving in a logical and entertaining way.

Here are some good problem solving improv games:

Banned words : Performers cannot say certain words. Scene partners will conceive of situations that encourage the actors to use those words, and the actors must find alternatives, such as using synonyms or taking the scene in a new direction.

Scenes from a chat : Audience gives a suggestion for a scene, and players act the scene out. Though it’s a fictional and often ridiculous scenario, actors must react to the situation and solve the problem in order for the scene to end.

Miracle cure : Miracle cure is a quick-moving exercise that follows a simple format. One player declares, “I have a problem.” Another player responds, “I have a….[random object.]” The first player then replies, “great! I can use the [random object] to….” and describes how they will solve the problem.

14. Spaghetti Tower

The spaghetti tower is a classic team building game. Participants gather uncooked spaghetti and marshmallows, and must construct the tallest freestanding tower.

During the in-person version, players must construct one tall freestanding tower. However, for the virtual version of the game, players construct individual towers. You can send groups to breakout rooms for the build, then reconvene in the main room for judging. Teams are judged on three main factors: number of towers, height, and uniformity.

This version of the game not only tests the structural integrity of the tower, but also consistency and quality control. This exercise teaches teams to align and collaborate remotely, and produce a consistent product even when far apart.

15. What Would You Do?

What Would You Do? is a simple situational game that challenges participants to react to different circumstances. To play this game, read prompts one by one, and then ask participants to respond with gameplans. You can use the polling or raise hand feature to vote for the best option.

Here are some problem solving scenarios for adults or kids to use in the game:

  • Zombies attack and you have to find a place to hide.
  • You are at the zoo and the animals escape. Which one do you try to corral back into the pen first?
  • After waiting in line for hours, someone cuts in front of you last minute. The person appears to be visually and hearing impaired, and doesn’t notice your protests. An official announces that due to diminishing supply, this individual will be the last in line to be served.
  • You are eating a meal with important clients and/or your partner’s parents, and you want to impress. The individuals make you a dish that does not fit within your dietary restrictions, but you do not speak the same language and cannot explain why you do not want to eat.
  • An imposter has infiltrated the organization, who looks, speaks, and behaves exactly like you. How do you convince your peers that you are the original?

16. Desert Island Survival

Desert Island Survival is a game that challenges players to prioritize. The premise is that players have been stranded on an island, and must decide what order to perform survival steps.

Here are the possible actions:

  • Set up shelter
  • Explore the island
  • Try to signal for help
  • Make weapons for self-defense
  • Build a raft to escape the island
  • Start a fire
  • Choose a group leader
  • Search for other survivors

All group members must agree on the order of the steps. Players should explain the reasoning for the order of each step while ranking the actions.

Another version of the game involves players receiving a list of 15 to 20 items, and selecting five or so to bring to the island. You can also vary the location of the game, substituting remote islands for destinations like outer space or the distant past.

17. Choose Your Own Adventure

Choose Your Own Adventure stories enable readers to determine the outcome of the story by making decisions. Each action has a consequence that takes the tale in a different direction. Participants can try to guess how the story may unfold by talking through the different choices. When completing the activity in a group setting, the majority of the team must agree on an action before moving forward in the story.

There are a few ways to facilitate these activities online:

  • Play an online role playing video game
  • Watch an interactive movie like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch
  • Read from a Choose Your Own Adventure book on Zoom
  • Click through a Choose Your Own Adventure platform
  • Create your own story using a Google Form

Whichever way you choose to do the exercise, you can use the screen share feature in your virtual meeting software so that listeners can more easily follow along.

18. MacGyver

MacGyver is a show where the hero escapes sticky situations by improvising tools out of unlikely materials. For example, in one episode the hero makes a telescope out of a newspaper, magnifying lens, and a watch crystal.

To play MacGyver, you can either list three to five objects participants can use, or challenge players to use items that are within arms reach.

Simply state a desired end result, such as “a way to open a locked door,” or “a getaway vehicle,” and then ask teams to explain what they will build and how they will build it. To make the activity more collaborative, you can give teams five or ten minutes in breakout rooms to strategize and design a prototype.

19. Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons is a roleplaying game where players pretend to be magical figures and creatures. One player serves as the dungeon master, who guides the game, while the other players pick characters and make decisions to move the story forward. Upon choosing a course of action, players roll a twenty-sided die to determine whether or not the plan succeeds. The game is story-based, the possibilities are nearly limitless, and truly creative problem solving options arise. Also, since gameplay is mostly verbal, Dungeons & Dragons is an easy activity to do over Zoom.

Here are the basic rules for Dungeons & Dragons .

20. Pandemic

Pandemic is a game that pits players against the forces of nature in a race to contain and control disease outbreaks. At the beginning of the game, each player receives a role such as containment specialist or operations expert. Participants must carry out the duties of their roles by choosing appropriate actions. Pandemic is a great game for groups because each team member has a clear part to play, and players must collaborate and work together instead of competing against each other.

To play the game online, you can use a Pandemic game app , or talk through the exercise while one attendee moves and displays pieces on the board.

Note: The subject of this game might hit too close to home for some players, considering recent history. You can find games with similar mechanics that deal with different subject matter, such as Forbidden Island.

21. Model UN

Model UN is one of the best virtual problem solving activities for students. This exercise casts participants in the role of international diplomats who must negotiate to solve realistic problems. Each player assumes the role of a country ambassador and must form alliances and propose solutions to solve crises.

Here are some sample Model UN scenarios:

  • Human rights violation by powerful country
  • Food shortage
  • Disease epidemic
  • Technology privacy violations
  • Civil war branching into surrounding countries
  • Natural disasters

Depending on the size of the group, participants either take on the part of an entire government of a country, or play a certain role within the government. To carry out the activity on Zoom, players can take turns giving speeches, message other countries privately via the chat, meet in breakout rooms to form alliances or have more intimate discussions, and use the polling feature to vote on propositions.

If politics does not resonate with your group, then you can alter the exercise by applying the same activity structure to a different theme, such as the Justice League, movie characters, business board members, or reality TV stars.

The main purpose of the exercise is to research, talk through problems, and compromise. As long as these elements are present, then the specifics of the setup do not matter.

There are many types of problem solving activities for adults. You can do online problem solving games, which require a different skill set than in-person problem solving. For instance, communication must be much clearer and more abundant when group members are far apart and unable to demonstrate or pick up physical cues.

Though many problem solving games include props and in-person elements, there are many games you can play together online. These exercises work well as educational tools as well as team bonding accelerators. Upon completion, participants are likely to feel a sense of accomplishment and increased confidence. These games are also great practice for real life conflict resolution, creative thinking and team building.

Next check out this list of connection games , this collection of crime-solving games , and this post with conflict resolution games .

Here is a list of the top 50 problem solving activities, games & puzzles best suited for remote teams. Read on!

What are problem solving activities?

The success of a company or organization depends heavily on the managers’ ability to help workers develop their problem solving skills. Problem solving activities that address areas such as teamwork and cooperation, adaptability or reinforcement of decision-making strategies help.

All processes of problem solving begin with the identification of the problem. The team will then evaluate the possible course of action and select the best way to tackle it. This needs a profound understanding of your team and its core strengths.

Not only among corporates, but problem solving activities find their use in educational settings as well. Students who are good at solving problems will become much more successful than those who are not. Remote work and education are on the rise.

Enabling smooth interpersonal communication to solve problems can become a task in these situations. However, engaging all the people concerned in problem solving activities before shifting to the remote space can ease the process.

9. Group problem solving activities for adults

Group problem solving activities are very efficient, especially for adults. These can be used in any setting to enhance problem solving skills.

1. Human Knots

  • Benefits: Communication skills, collaboration
  • Time Duration: 10 – 15 minutes.

This is one of the most straightforward group problem solving activities that can be done with any group. It facilitates communication and critical thinking in the face of a challenging and complex question. Various group members will possibly suggest a variety of solutions, and each will need to be reviewed and adopted by the organization as a whole.

  • Have the group stand in a small circle (make several circles when you are a larger group). Every person in the loop will hold the hands of 2 other people who are not directly next to them. That would make a messy crossed arms knot.
  • Ask the group to disentangle themselves without moving their hands at any point in time. They may be unable to disentangle completely to form a circle again. Still, they would have begun to work together to solve the problem by the end of the activity.

2. Frostbite

  • Benefits: Leadership, decision-making, trust, adaptability
  • Time Duration: 30 minutes.
  • Materials Required: An electric fan, blindfold, simple building materials like cardboard paper, rubber bands, toothpicks, masking tape, straws, sticky notes, etc.

Your group is trapped in the barren deserts of Siberia, and a sudden winter storm is approaching. You have to create a shelter with only the materials in hand that can survive the storm’s harsh winds. The leader of your expedition was afflicted with frostbite in both hands, sadly, and all the others experience severe snow blindness.

  • Divide the group into clusters of 4-5. Every group will have to elect a chief.
  • Group leaders are not allowed to use their hands to support the group in any way, and group members should be blindfolded during the exercise.
  • The groups have 30 minutes to build a small tent structure that can withstand the wind from the fan’s highest location.

3. Dumbest Idea First

  • Benefits: Critical thinking, creative problem solving, quick problem solving
  • Time Duration: 15 – 20 minutes
  • Materials Required: Pen or pencil, a piece of paper.

Dumbest Idea First is one of the most creative problem solving activities for groups. This can encourage your creativity by thinking out of the box and lead you to ideas that would typically sound too insane to work. You can broaden the possibilities by looking at these crazy solutions first, and find potential alternatives that might not be as obvious.

  • Present your team with a question. It could be a real-world dilemma facing the group, or it could be a created scenario. For example, your company attempts to beat a rival to win a high-paying customer contract, but the customer bends to your competitors. You have a short period before they make the final decision to change their mind.
  • With the given question, advise your group to come up with the dumbest ideas to tackle the issue. Anything can be written down.
  • After each person has put forward a few ideas, go through the list, and analyze each plan to see which are the most feasible. List them from the highest level of feasibility to the lowest level.

4. Wool Web

  • Benefits: Leadership, communication
  • Time Duration: 30 minutes
  • Materials Required: Some balls of yarn.

As hard as replicating the magnitude of the real-world problems is, that is no excuse not to try! Wool web creates a dilemma that appears complicated at first, but groups will learn to break down complicated challenges into solvable problems one move at a time.

This happens by using the right strategy and working together. Undoubtedly, this is one of the most stimulating problem solving activities for adults.

  • Split the group into similarly large teams. Every time, it receives a yarn ball.
  • Tell each team to turn the yarn ball into a vast web. Give them around 5-10 minutes to do this. When done, rotate all the teams so that every team is on a yarn web they have not set up.
  • Every group must choose one person to untangle the web. That individual would be blindfolded and be guided by the rest of the team on how to unwind the web using only verbal instructions. The first team to achieve it wins the game.

5. Tallest Tower

  • Benefits: Creative thinking, collaboration
  • Materials Required: 1 bag of marshmallows, one packet of uncooked spaghetti.

Simple building projects can help group members create strategies to overcome box issues. Tallest Tower is another one of the most creative problem solving activities. Groups will compete with only two materials to make the tallest tower in a fixed period.

  • Divide the group into two, which have an equal number of players. Provide 20 – 30 uncooked spaghetti noodles and 3-4 marshmallows to every team.
  • Groups must compete in the provided period to build the tallest tower using only the materials supplied. A marshmallow has to be set at the top of the tower.

  • After that, the student should guess, pulling each clue until they think it is right.
  • See how quickly the student can solve the riddle.

3. Survivor Scenario – Create a hypothetical situation that allows students to think creatively to make it through. One example may be being stuck on an island, realizing that three days of help would not come.

  • Invite students to write down anonymously and apply any concerns or problems they may have at school or at home, which they do not appear to be able to work out on their own.
  • Let a student draw one of the things from the box once or twice a week, and read it aloud.
  • Finally, as a group, let the class work out the best way students can approach the problem and eventually solve it.

  • Benefits: Decision making
  • Materials Required: Construction toys.

1. Let your child build a challenge openly and often, and ask him/her to build a particular structure, with conditions. For instance:

  • Create two towers with a bridge that connects them.
  • Create a creature that stands alone and has three arms.

2. Observe how your child uses trial-and-error before finding a way to bring the idea into motion.

4. Tic-Tac-Toe – this is an excellent game for teaching decision-making skills. It encourages kids to think before they act and weigh the potential consequences.

What is a problem solving process?

When a team or person faces an issue or obstacle, it can be tempting to quickly track a potential solution and set up a fast fix. This could happen without understanding the complexity of the problem and pursuing a systematic approach to seeking a solution.

The attempts to address issues or obstacles may become unstructured and frustrating without a consistent method. End-to-end processes for problem solving offer a mechanism for a community to tackle any size or nature, and see results. Problem solving activities for adults, kids, and students can help make the problem solving process very useful.

Army problem solving process

There are 7 steps to problem solving army model,

  • Recognize and define the problem – The first step army problem solving process is defining the problem precisely and determining the root cause.
  • Gather facts and make assumptions – You need to gather all information you have at your disposal. Common resources for information may be documentation and policies. Assumptions are unsubstantiated facts. Use facts rather than assumptions when you need to analyze the scope of the problem.
  • Generate alternatives – One of the key steps in military problem solving is finding ways to solve the problem. Ideally, it best to have multiple approaches to solve the problem. Take input from peers and subordinates if possible.
  • Analyze possible solutions – Analyze each possible solution with advantages and disadvantages. You evaluate each solution according to screening and feasibility criteria. Reject the solution when it fails in the screening process.
  • Compare Alternatives – Another crucial step in the army problem solving model is to evaluate alternatives for cost and benefits. You need to consider your experience and immediate future. Tabulating each solution with the pros and cons will help clear the picture.
  • Make an executive your decision – Make a decision and prepare an action plan, and put it in motion.
  • Assess the result – You need to monitor the implementation of the plan and modify it if required. Establishing critical steps and milestones will help to ensure success.

Army problem solving games

  • Capture the flag – the game helps in team building and army problem solving. Two teams compete against one another to retrieve a flag or object from the opposing team camp base and get into their camp base. This game is flexible, and ground rules need to be set before the game starts.
  • Paintball – Paintball is a fun military problem solving activity. You can have many modifications and variations of the paintball game. The aim is to fire paint pellets at the opposing team. Laser tag is another variation of the game.
  • Firing blind – Firing blind is a game where each team has a large number of water balloons. At the other end of the field has to hit the target is protected by a tarp from direct firing. The team has to hit the target that is covered. One team member acts as the observer and directs the team to hit the target with the water balloons.

Obstacles to problem solving

Problem solving can take time and patience, one of the best ways to solve any problem is pausing and evaluating the problem. Obstacles to problem solving are,

  • Misdiagnosis – Misdiagnosis is a common problem can occur due to preconceived idea, biases or judgments. Defining and having a concrete understanding of the problem is the first step in the problem solving activity. This can be difficult. If you are not careful, you may spend your time and resources solving the wrong problem and finding the wrong solution.
  • Communication bias – Communication barriers are caused when we are unable to explain the problem to the team, or presuming we know more than everyone else. Everyone on the team must be on the same page. You may need to acknowledge you have a limited understanding of the problem.
  • Solution bias – A common obstacle in problem solving is thinking there may be a universal solution or thinking the same solution can solve multiple problems. You need to evaluate a problem independently than try to force-fit a solution that worked previously.
  • Cognitive bias – One of the barriers to finding an effective solution is cognitive bias, or the tendency to jump to conclusions. To find solutions fast firms often end up with an irrelevant solution. This may cause more problems down the line.
  • Lack of empathy – Every problem is associated with human emotions or abilities. It is important to identify and recognize people affected by the problem or it will be difficult to find a solution that will solve help.

23 Problem-solving games for busy work teams

problem solving game mobile

Problem solving is a skill that can serve almost anyone, in any role, in any industry. The ability to think critically, and resolve issues is a welcome talent that is helpful for every organization. How can you encourage such thinking in your team? In this article, we are talking about our favorite problem-solving games, activities, and exercises for work. Use these activities to sharpen the reasoning and decision-making skills of your department or your entire company. Without further ado, let’s dive into the best problem solving games for getting the most of your next work event.

In-person problem solving games

If you have the opportunity to get your team together in person, that’s a gift! Perhaps you are planning a company retreat or a department-wide in-person meeting. Whatever the circumstances, in today’s more digital workspace, it’s not always easy to have everyone in the same room. When you actually do, make the most of it! These activities are set up for in-person groups. They are part team-building activity, part icebreaker, and all fun! All of these activities are guaranteed to get people thinking, communicating, and having fun. If you have a particularly big group, you may want to browse our article on large group games too.

1. Treasure hunt

Similar to a scavenger hunt, a treasure hunt is a lot of fun but with a bit more intention. Rather than collecting a random list of items, participants use clues to find more prompts and hints, until the group solves a mystery (or finds a treasure). You can also create a treasure map if you want to play into the “pirate” fantasy a little more. The important thing is that only clues point toward the next stop - areas of the map should not be spelled out, but involve some problem solving and critical thinking to figure out what the clue means.

2. Story challenge

For the language lovers on your team, try this version of an ongoing story icebreaker. To play, each person receives a number of words (a word bank) that they can use to create a story. Then, everyone reads their piece out loud or presents it to the group. To come up with the words available for each person, you can use a random word generator online, or get creative. For example, consider instructing participants that they can only use words from the company website, or from the emails they received in their inbox yesterday.

3. Moral dilemma

Similar to a “ would you rather ” game, this activity centers on ethical dilemmas. Players should try to flex their moral problem-solving muscles by tackling a social issue. For example, Scruples is a popular board game that can be played. Or, you can look online for versions of games like Dilemma or Quandary. This is a great way to learn more about your colleagues while getting a peek at the way they think.

4. Build a shelter

How would you survive if you were stranded in an isolated place with a blizzard coming? Use this activity to find out! As an added complication, you can pretend that everyone is blinded by frostbite (by using blindfolds). The team leader must give the group instructions for building a shelter that can withstand the arctic winds. To play, you need a large space and some supplies. Then, select a leader (who can see) and blindfold everyone else. You’ll also need a large fan. The leader guides everyone in putting together their shelter (remember, while blindfolded). When everyone feels confident that their shelter is up to the test, turn on the fan and see if the structure can withstand the wind! This game is sure to lead to a lot of laughs and you’ll be surprised at some of the clever ideas that people come up with. This is also a powerful exercise for effective leadership - it’s not easy to reach a goal with a group that is blindfolded! Check out our article on team activities especially for leadership as well.

5. Improv games

You may think of improv games as more of an icebreaker activity, but the truth is there is a lot of brain power that goes into well-done improv. Look for ways to add both logic and entertainment to your next improv effort. Consider scenarios like banned words, where people cannot use a certain list of words, or “miracle cure”, where one person shares a problem they’re having and the other person must come up with the solution on the spot. Both are fun and easy ideas that don’t require anything but willing participants! If you need some other quick and easy team building activities , make sure to follow our blog.

6. Spaghetti tower

In this classic team building game, users try to build a tower using uncooked pasta noodles and marshmallows. The instructions are simple: use the tools at your disposal to design and build the tallest tower in order to win the challenge. You can judge on height alone, or weigh other factors like innovation, number of towers, or stability. For more simple team building activities , make sure to follow our blog.

7. What would you do?

Another classic icebreaker, this game involves coming up with some scenarios that require brain power to address. Here are some prompts you can use with your group:

  • What would you do if you were at the zoo and all the animals escaped?
  • What would you do if you were the first person to find out about an upcoming zombie apocalypse?
  • What would you do if you were in line for a really important item, and a person cut in front of you, getting the last item?
  • What would you do if you were invited for dinner at the home of someone you really needed to impress, and the food was terrible?
  • What would you do if an imposter that looks and acts just like you infiltrated your organization? How can you convince everyone that you’re the “real” you?

8. “MacGyver” challenge

MacGyver is an older television program where the hero escaped sticky situations by improvising tools made of unlikely materials. You can recreate this set-up in your event space or office. To play, challenge participants to use 3-5 items to reach a desired end result. For example, something like “a way to pick the door lock” or “escape vehicle” are fun options. You can either set out some various equipment, or have people collect their own based on what they can find around the office. Note: if you are doing this in a conference room or other rented space, it makes sense to have a table set up with random odds and ends for people to pick from.

9. Egg drop challenge

This one will take you back to high school physics class! Break a larger group into smaller teams and challenge them to come up with a container that will protect an egg even when it’s dropped from up high. You can either let people know far enough in advance that they can discuss, design, and collect materials; or you can have supplies ready and have everyone build their creation on the spot. If you go that route, you’ll want to provide a variety of boxes, packing supplies, rubber bands, fabric, etc. Then set up a ladder and have each team drop their container and see if their egg remained intact.

10. Shrinking circle

Adaptability and flexibility are huge in the business world. One way to focus on both of those items is by playing this simple and silly game. Start out by using a rope to create a large circle that everyone can fit in. Then, every few minutes, make the circle a bit smaller. Depending on how large the circle is in the first place, you can take away an inch or a foot each round. The challenge is for everyone present to stay inside the circle. This will require some serious innovation once the circle gets small, and lots of laughs almost always ensue. Note: People are likely to end up touching each other in this exercise. It’s difficult not to once the space gets small, like a game of Twister. You know your colleagues best - if that level of closeness would make anyone uncomfortable, it’s probably best to try a different exercise.

Out-of-the-office problem-solving activities

Everyone once in a while, it can be really valuable to get out of your usual work environment and into a new mental space. If your team is planning a multi-day retreat, don’t be afraid to include an organized activity that will help everyone to think more critically. Most towns have at least one option for getting your group together and learning some new ways to problem solve. Do some research on what you have available locally, or work with an organization like Surf Office who can plan your next retreat - including the fun elements that your employees will be talking about for months to come! If you know that you can’t get out of the office right now, stick to this list of indoor team building activities .

11. Escape room

The goal of an escape room is to follow a series of clues and take on some challenges in order to unlock the space that everyone is locked in. There are usually 5 - 10 puzzles that teams will work together to figure out. Typically finishing one leads to another clue, so that participants can move onto the next phase. Only when they’ve successfully completed all of the tasks can they find the key and escape. While you can definitely set up an escape room on your own, we think it’s worth finding a local version in your town (or wherever your retreat is taking place). These are professionally set up and usually in really cool spaces like an underground bunker or a historic building. An escape room is a good excuse to get out of the office and spend time with coworkers in a new environment.

12. Murder mystery

These story-based games have people take on a role in a pretend scenario. They may take on a role like detective, dinner guest, or even killer in their dinner. Most of the time the games involve reading lines from a script, searching for clues, or even solving some simple challenges to move onto the next phase. Participants have to pay attention to conversations and context clues in order to get an understanding of who the killer might be. Observation and logic are key to catching the killer. Some murder mysteries involve getting dressed up and having a nice dinner, so if you’re looking for an idea for a big night out capping off your next retreat, this is perfect.

13. Ax throwing

What do axes have to do with problem solving? You might be surprised. This is definitely an activity you’ll want to go to a professional venue for. Ax throwing outfits have everything you need, plus the right safety precautions. They have everything set up with the proper distances, buffers between throwing stations, safe ax materials, etc. Plus, many of them offer food and drinks! Ax throwing can help with problem solving because most people don’t excel at it their first time. It takes some practice and careful consideration to figure out where to stand, the best stance, the force of the throw, etc. As you take turns, you’ll make adjustments and also consider new methods based on observing your teammates. The more you watch and the more you try, the better you’ll get. In fact, instead of having people compete against each other, we suggest having the team compete against themselves, aiming for a higher total score in their second or third consecutive game. This activity allows you to observe others and then optimize - essentially learning from each other.

14. Paper boat race

If you are able to visit a location by water, you can try this really fun activity. In this fun and creative exercise, participants build a small boat with paper (and other supplies) and then race them in a small body of water like a pond or stream. The boats are usually made by folding paper into a boat shape, but you can also try offering cardboard, balloons, popsicle sticks, or other crafty materials. You’ll also want to supply materials for decorating so that everyone can really have their creation stand out. Obviously the person who reaches the finish line first is the winner, but you can offer a few other prizes just for fun, like most beautiful boat or best effort. Make sure to check out our article on other creativity and innovation games , too.

Problem-solving puzzles

When it’s just not possible to get everyone together, you can still encourage your team to put on their thinking caps and hone their skills. There are tons of critical thinking games, puzzles , and even apps that people can use to practice problem solving. You can encourage your team members to play these games in their spare time, or even set up a competition where people log minutes playing such games or using the apps. If you’re feeling really generous, give everyone a small stiped to be used on a problem solving app of their choice. This special touch makes a nice addition to a holiday gift, too!

Sudoku has become one of the most popular problem solving games for adults. There are dozens of free app options, as well as paperback books that you can pick up. The goal of this game is to fill each box on a 9×9 grid so that every row, column, and letter contains each number from one to nine. It sounds tricky - and it is - but players tend to find it addicting and the game has grown a huge following in recent years. Encourage people to play on their own by downloading an app or purchasing a puzzle book, or as a team by having the puzzles available in your office or at your next event.

16. Crossword puzzles

These classic word games have players fill out words based on clues. Words interconnect, and people must think critically about the context clues of what they’ve filled out so far. These puzzles are super versatile and one of the best things about them is that you can make them yourself so they are themed. You can use an online crossword puzzle maker to create a custom puzzle with clues about your business or other relevant subjects. For your next event, it might be fun to have a custom crossword puzzle about your company history or trivia!

17. Tic-tac-toe tournament

It sounds a little silly, but tic-tac-toe requires more brain power than one might think. Set up an ongoing tic-tac-toe board in your office and encourage people to use it on their breaks or when they have a few minutes to kill. You can set up a scoreboard and keep track of the leader; it’s a lot of fun to see the rankings change and to challenge the top performers. If you need an even simpler version of the same concept, simply set up the Connect Four game board in your break room and let people have at it!

Problem-solving for virtual teams

If your team is a bit scattered, it doesn’t mean that you can’t practice solving challenges together. In our digital world, there are plenty of options for online activities that teams can work on either independently or as a group. In the section above, we shared some ideas for independent work. These ideas are designed to bring your team together, no matter where they are. Set a time and have everyone hop onto your preferred communication tool, and then work together tackling these challenges.

18. Virtual hackathon

A hackathon normally refers to an event where participants have a set amount of time to design and pitch a new product or solution. It’s normally used in the tech space for pitching things like new apps, but you can apply the concept in lots of other ways too. In this online version, teams work with each other using virtual meeting software and pitch ideas to a panel of judges. This type of event requires some advance notice for the participants, as they’ll want to collect a team and come up with some designs. If you want to raise the stakes, offer a prize for first place.

19. Online escape room

Just like an in-person escape room, in an online version people must solve a variety of puzzles in order to make it “out”. Digital escape rooms normally come in one of two ways: in a Zoom “room” led by a host, or in a choose-your-own-adventure style via Google Forms or other websites. To play virtually, staff will enter the meeting and follow the prompts they get, and it might involve screen sharing some Google tools to work on puzzles together. Because of the platforms and tools that may be involved, this activity is better for teams who are a bit more tech-savvy and comfortable with online meetings, apps, etc.

20. Survival plans

Prioritizing is an important mental exercise. You can work on this with a game about survival. Have everyone imagine they are stranded on a desert island, and they must decide the correct order to perform life-saving steps in. Have this list handy, and ask everyone to pair off or get in small groups and number the list according to the best likelihood of survival:

  • Set up shelter
  • Look around the island
  • Signal for help
  • Create weapons for self-defense
  • Build a raft for water
  • Start a fire
  • Select a group leader
  • Find other survivors
  • Anything else you think of!

The catch is that everyone must agree on the order of events!  That will typically involve discussion and coming to some sort of consensus. Once everyone is done with the exercise, have them present to the larger group and explain their reasoning. This exercise is good for team-building, communication, and problem resolution. Plus, you will be better prepared if you ever get stuck on a deserted island!

21. Online role-playing games (like Dungeons and Dragons)

Seeing how people react in real-world situations is a really interesting way to get to know them better. Find an online game that has real-world actions and consequences, like Dungeons and Dragons. Or, you can make things even simpler by hopping on a Zoom together and reading a Choose Your Own Adventure book aloud, with the reader getting group consensus before making a decision. The important part is the discussion that will occur before choosing the next action. This is helpful for bonding and also helps you to see how your colleagues tick. These activities can be difficult to organize for big groups, so if you have a substantial team, try some of these team building activities for large groups instead.

22. Google Docs story

Similar to an ongoing story icebreaker, this game is easy to do online as people have time. You start by creating a Google Doc that everyone on the team has access to. Then, have people go into the Doc and add to the story that’s developing. If you want, you can pick a prompt to kick things off - or you can just let the first person get creative and go for it! The more specific or bizarre the scenario, the more creative and clever people will have to get to add their portion.

23. Model UN

Chances are you might be familiar with this concept from high school. Fortunately, adults can have a lot of fun with it too. You can play this virtually as long as everyone is a strong communicator. Each participant should take on the role of an international diplomat, and work together to form alliances and solve crises. Come up with a potential scenario that the UN must work through. Consider things like a global food shortage, natural disaster, or cyber-security threats. If your group is particularly large, you can have multiple people assigned to a country and they will have separate roles. If politics is a sensitive topic on your team, you might want to tweak this exercise to be focused on a business and treat participants like board members - or even a musical group!

Set the tone of your next company retreat

These problem solving games and activities are great virtually any time - there is something for everyone, whether you’re remote or in person, on a large team or a small one. One of the best ways to implement a problem solving exercise is at the beginning of a team retreat. If you have organized a large meeting or team building event, consider getting things started with such an activity. Many of these problem solving games will get everyone thinking and make people more comfortable, plus a lot of them also serve as a form of icebreaker.

The next time you plan a work retreat , consider including a few of these on the agenda to set the tone for a fun, energizing event. Need help ensuring that your retreat is, in fact, fun and energizing?

Share All sharing options for: Nightingale’s jank mechanics are enveloped by a truly visionary world

A crew of Realmwalkers emerge from a portal in the game Nightingale

If you’re a fan of survival and crafting, 2024 has been an absolute treat so far. We’ve already had Enshrouded and Palworld , and a new early access contender has just shown up: Nightingale . Nightingale doesn’t have a strong and immediate hook like Palworld , nor does it have some of the quality-of-life features available in Enshrouded . What this game does have is an immaculate sense of style and art direction, and that’s the lifeline that I’ve been clinging to through my first few brutal hours with the game.

Nightingale mixes the sort of environments you might expect from a survival game — verdant forests, mysterious deserts, and boggy swamps — with Victorian aesthetics, high fantasy, and fae. I am a Realmwalker, and I’ve entered into a pact with a fae guide called Puck. Something called the Pale, a space between worlds, enveloped and froze the Earth. Some Realmwalkers were able to flee through portals, only to be lost to some unknown realm. The player is one of these refugees; I get to choose the details of their past life and upbringing before everything went apocalyptic.

Luckily, I have a little fae guy helping me out. Nightingale starts off with a tutorial, where Puck teaches me how to build, craft, find shelter, and kill beasts. I jump from a forest to a desert to a swamp, taking in some of the sights that the procedurally generated realms have to offer. The most important thing I learn about is Realm cards, which slot into a strange machine that looks like an old movie projector. These allow me to jump to new places, modifying everything from the biome I’ll arrive in to the danger I can expect.

A Realmwalker in Nightingale confronts a creature with a gnarled, toothy face, long limbs, and a massive staff glowing with power.

It’s important to note that Nightingale currently requires players to be online, even for solo play. More than once I’ve gotten into a groove, only to disconnect or suffer server issues on the game’s side. It’s a major contention that the game’s launch fan base has, and upon reading reviews, it’s a large part of why the game has racked up a “Mixed” review score on Steam. Developer Inflexion Games is working on an offline mode , but for now, I find myself at the mercy of the game’s servers. Nightingale is a Steam Early Access game, which means some of these issues will likely be addressed before the 1.0 launch.

When things are actually working and I can dive into Nightingale , I immediately start to encounter things that inspire a sense of awe. For instance, I find myself startled by a giant treant-like creature dragging itself on spindly branch arms. As I watch cautiously, the thing stops and poops out a pile of sticks that prove useful in making my first set of tools. In a forest realm, I encounter a giant spectral moose that sparkles with astral power.

Each realm is dotted with strange structures, some of which exist in bubbles free of gravity. Some of the buildings I find look manmade, while others seem alien and strange. I find alien-looking growths, glowing from inside with great power, or old-world artifacts that have been left behind and overgrown. Nightingale is dripping with style; even the near-obligatory addition of a glider has been spiced up a little, and I use a Mary Poppins-style umbrella instead.

All of these virtues are sorely needed, because the first chunk of Nightingale out of the tutorial is slow and plodding. I had to start building up a base, preparing crafting benches, and getting a solid food supply going. These are all bog-standard survival tasks, and Inflexion Games hasn’t quite nailed the process of making them feel good. Take chopping down a tree, one of the most basic survival activities possible. I chop at the trunk, which becomes more splintered with each swing, until it shudders loose from the stump and bounces in place before exploding into resources. When you compare it to a game like Sons of the Forest or Valheim , where felling a tree leads to a proper display of physics where the trunk topples and falls, it falls short.

Puck, an impeccably dressed little fae creature wearing an ornate gold mask, in a fall forest biome in Nightingale.

It feels like a small thing, but Nightingale is lousy with these little issues. Hitting a rock with a pick causes it to explode outward into resources; the awkward animations continually chip all of the beautiful immersion built up by the game’s environments and design. I also found myself constantly running into tiny quality-of-life issues, like the fact that my crossbow wouldn’t automatically reload. An extra click doesn’t seem like a big deal, but when I’m kiting a pack of wolves, it can be the difference between life and death.

Character creation is another process that doesn’t feel quite right. Upon creating a character, I was greeted with pre-made faces to use as a starting template, most of which were lumpy and strange. Granted, I would rather have a face full of character that looks like it was carved out of a ham over a smooth and perfect doll face… but it takes a bit of playing with levers and tweaking settings to create a photogenic protagonist.

The first few hours after the tutorial are a little slow, and I can see players dropping out during this phase — but once I got my base properly set up and I started delving into new realms to explore and loot, Nightingale became truly intriguing. This game has a slow start and more than a few issues to work out while in early access, but the art style and direction does massive work at keeping me invested. I’m eager to see more of Nightingale and keep delving into new worlds, even if it’s a bit of an uphill battle to get to the good bits.

What does SOS mode on iPhone mean? Symbol appears during AT&T outage Thursday

problem solving game mobile

Thousands of customers woke up Thursday morning to an SOS symbol at the top of their iPhones and no service due to a nationwide telecommunications outage .

The outages were impacting AT&T customers the most, although services from Verizon, Cricket Wireless and T-Mobile were also affected. It also began to impact essential public services, including people’s ability to call emergency responders.

The outages have continued through Thursday morning, with more than 70,000 AT&T customers reporting outages as of 8:56 a.m. ET, according to Downdetector.com .

What does the SOS symbol mean, and how does it connect to the outage? Here's what to know.

AT&T down: Tens of thousands report AT&T service outage; Verizon and T-Mobile users also claim issues

What does the SOS symbol on the iPhone mean?

During Thursday's outage, an SOS symbol appeared on the screens of iPhone users with AT&T (in the same place where cell service bars are normally shown).

The SOS symbol can appear in the status bar of iPhones and iPads, meaning devices aren't connected to a cellular network. It also means there is a cellular network "available for emergency calls,"  Apple's support website  states.

The SOS feature is available on iPhones and iPads in the U.S., Australia and Canada.

"When you make a call with SOS, your iPhone automatically calls the local emergency number and shares your location information with emergency services," according to Apple. "In some countries and regions, you might need to choose the service that you need.

After making an emergency call, your iPhone alerts any emergency contacts designated in your phone.

Apple says all iPhone models 14 or later can also use Emergency SOS via satellite to text emergency services when no cellular and Wi-Fi coverage is available.
