Clayton Malaysia

Psychology is the study of mind and behaviour. It is a broad scientific discipline that includes investigations of the brain, learning, memory, perception, reasoning, decision making, language, developmental and social processes, personality, and mental health and well-being. It is also concerned with the practical and ethical applications of psychological research to the profession.

The psychology major is research-led and based on the scientist-practitioner model of education whereby you will learn about professional practice within a scientific perspective. You will then able to make informed choices about psychology-related careers and about further training at the fourth year and postgraduate level, both being required to practice as a psychologist in Australia.

If you are studying in an APAC-accredited course, you may complete the ten unit (60 point) extended major, accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and intended for those who wish to specialise in psychology. This option provides a pathway to further study in psychology and to the training required to practise as a psychologist in Australia.

Alternatively you may complete an eight-unit (48 point) major in psychology, which will be sufficient to satisfy the requirements for a major in the 'Relevant courses' listed below. This option is for students who do not wish to become registered psychologists but have an interest in psychology or for whom the study of psychology complements their other expertise.

Progression to honours

Students completing a relevant course with a 60-point APAC-accredited major sequence in psychology are eligible to apply for entry to a fourth year in psychology through an honours year or equivalent. Refer to the psychology honours psychology honours ( http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/aos/psychology/ ) entry in this Handbook.

Single subject study

Studying single subjects helps you get ready for tertiary courses, skilled up for the modern workforce and fully invested in your own professional and personal development.

Offered through our Community Access Program (CAP), you'll be taught by expert teachers and researchers and can choose from a wide range of subjects both at an undergraduate and graduate level. You can choose from two study modes as detailed below.

Assessed mode

This option is perfect if you need to do   enabling studies through the Community Access Program (CAP) and satisfy subject prerequisites for entry to a Melbourne course. You can also use these subjects to apply for  Advanced Standing (prior learning credit) after you enrol.

Your study will be assessed and you'll receive results and an academic transcript. You'll need to attend all classes, activities and complete all set assessment tasks. If you apply under the   Non-school leaver entry pathway , you could satisfy entry requirements by completing four subjects through the program.

If you're already a Melbourne student, you can also use the results to improve your current grades and prove academic rehabilitation in your degree. You'll first need approval from your faculty to apply and credit can't be applied to your current degree.

If you're not a student at all, these results can be used for things like professional accreditation. You'll need to first check what single subjects can be recognised by the organisation.

Find out how to apply

Non-assessed mode

In non-assessed mode you can study single subjects without the pressure of exams or tests.

You need to be enrolled as a student to study in non-assessed mode.  You'll receive an NA (‘Non-Assessed’) grade for the single subjects you study and also receive a free digital academic transcript once you complete these studies.

If you apply for courses at a later stage, these subjects can't be used to apply for advanced standing.
