Erotic books

16 erotic books hotter and better than Fifty Shades of Grey

Looking for steamy scenes and excellent writing? Skip E.L. James’s sex-filled trilogy, and take these books to bed instead.

Though E.L. James’s erotic books about BDSM and sex continue to captivate the world, meriting a 2015 movie, a musical parody and the Marlon Wayans sarcastic send-up Fifty Shades of Black , we’re still not sure why. The book series itself is filled with awkward metaphors and unconvincing melodrama, and there are movies with more innovative and groundbreaking sex scenes —and real-life dominatrixes , of course. But sexy books can be smart, too, and these 16 deliciously naughty alternatives to Fifty Shades of Grey are both better and riskier. You’ll be inspired to start planning a romantic night out yourself.

Do you want more great stories about things to do, where to eat, what to watch, and where to party? Obviously you do,  follow Time Out New York on Facebook for the good stuff .

The pair wind up blowing off steam in some intriguing ways.

10 Books That are Similar to "50 Shades of Grey"

Fifty Shades of Grey

There are times when someone writes a book and it literally takes the world by storm. It doesn't happen as often as it used to, largely because the way people consume both information and entertainment has changed a lot over the last 10 to 15 years. That being said, there are still some books that will absolutely go down in history as being so influential that almost everyone chooses to read them. Even those who don’t read them are still familiar with the titles. Think “A Tale of Two Cities” or “Little Women.” In more modern times, you have the erotic story written by E L James, “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Here, you can understand a little more about this particular book and even learn more about ten other books that are similar to it.

About “50 Shades of Grey”

The one thing you have to remember here is that this is not just some erotic novel about two people who fall for one another. It actually has some much darker themes that run throughout the entire novel. Granted, you have the two main characters here, Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. They definitely have an attraction to one another, one that is intense and immediate. However, the book doesn't only focus on their need to be in a physical relationship with each other. While that is definitely part of the book and undoubtedly the hook that eventually got so many people to decide to read it, it's actually a fascinating meditation on why people behave the way they do.

Taboo Topics

More specifically, this particular book talks about why certain people have such a controlling nature, even when they seemingly have everything in the world at their fingertips. The book points out the fact that it's often those individuals who seem to have everything that they could ever want who are actually the most insecure. As a result, they often have a need to control everything and everyone around them.

At the same time, the author of the book was careful to weave in stories that prove that no real individual is one-dimensional. Everyone has the capacity for both good and bad inside of them. Put simply, the story is determined to point out the fact that real life individuals have more than one side to their personality. As such, good people sometimes do bad things. By the same token, bad people also have the capacity to do good things.

If you read the book and you loved it, you'll probably want to know about other books out there that are similar so that you can read them as well. Here are 10 books that are quite similar to “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Maybe you have a favorite on the list that you've already read. On the other hand, this might provide you with enough reading material for the next few months.

10. “Bared to You” (Sylvia Day)

Part of the Crossfire Series, this book follows the story of billionaire Gideon Cross and his recent love interest, Ava. It parallels “Fifty Shades of Grey” in many areas, especially with regard to the fact that Cross is a billionaire with a need to control everyone that comes into his path. In addition, his new love interest also has dark secrets in her past. As you might imagine, the attraction between the two of them is almost instantaneous and equally intense. However, it's also a recipe for disaster. You simply can't put two people that have dark secrets in the closet as well as horrible things that have happened to them in the past together and expect everything to go smoothly.

The fact that things don't go smoothly is actually where this book really shines. It's an erotic thriller in a way, and it's one that will definitely get your attention. For those who really like these types of books, this is a must-read. Even if you don't traditionally read books of this type, this is really one that you should check out because the story is top-notch. It's also told in such a way that it's constantly engaging. Even from the first page, you'll never find yourself bored or noticing that your mind wanders as you read. It's completely engaging from start to finish.

9. “This Man” (Jodi Ellen Malpas)

This book is similar to the others on this list but it really does take things to the next level, even to the point of being somewhat over-the-top. That might sound like a turn-off, but it's actually intentionally written that way so that the characters are made to seem extreme in many of their behaviors. For example, you have the two main characters, Jessie Ward and his love interest, again named Ava. Neither one of them really knows what they're getting into when they fall for one another. It's obvious from the beginning that neither one of them is prepared to have a mature relationship.

It all starts when Ward hires Ava to decorate his Manor. From the very first time they lay eyes on one another, they can't keep their hands off each other. They have one of those romances that burns white-hot. As you probably already know, anything that burns that hot is also going to burn out fairly quickly. He's extremely possessive and far too controlling. Ava doesn't appreciate either one of those behaviors, yet she can't find a way to say no to him. This is a book where you should absolutely despise both of the characters, yet you find yourself empathizing with them every time you turn the page.

8. “Fixed on You” (Laurelin Paige)

This one tells the story of bar owner Hudson Pierce and his new hire, Alayna. Both of these individuals have loads of problems that they're doing their best to deal with. They also have a tendency to try their very best to keep the darker sides of themselves hidden from the rest of the world, especially from each other. Both have done things in the past that are truly horrific, things that they're trying their best to put behind them so they can move forward.

It doesn't exactly make it easy to move forward when they begin to fall for one another, something that happens almost immediately. As you can imagine, they both begin trying to hide that dark part of their personality from one another that they don't want anyone else to see. The more intense the relationship becomes, the more they try to hide those character traits. Eventually, it all bubbles over and, as it typically does, everything comes to the surface.

The twist here is that instead of allowing that to destroy the relationship or make them become worse examples of who they've been in the past, they actually use their pain (and their past struggles) to become stronger, leaning on each other when they need to most. It may be classified as an adult contemporary novel, but it also tells a genuinely heartfelt story that can even seem sweet at times.

7. “Release Me” (J. Kenner)

The two main characters in this story are Damien Stark and Nikki Fairchild. Like most of the books on this list, Damien is a billionaire with loads of skeletons in his closet that he would like very much to keep there. That being said, Nikki isn't exactly innocent herself. As a matter of fact, she has more than her fair share of secrets and dark personality traits that she's not exactly keen on sharing, either.

If you had to pick a theme associated with this book, it would be one about control. There is no doubt about the fact that Damien wants control over every aspect of his life, and that includes Nikki. The surprising thing is that she seems more than willing to simply allow him to make all of her decisions for him. As a matter of fact, the book seems to highlight the idea that she is totally turned on by being around someone who is so possessive.

It's definitely a twist that you don't see in a lot of novels and it's not something that will resonate with everyone. However, it made the list because it is similar to “Fifty Shades of Grey” in many ways. As such, a lot of individuals who truly love that book have also read this one and found it to be an enjoyable experience, even if there are a few rough patches here and there.

6. “A Million Dirty Secrets” (C.L. Parker)

Oddly enough, this book actually got its start as fanfiction associated with the “ Twilight ” novels. The book features a sacrifice made by one Delaine Talbot, an act that she does in an attempt to save her family from financial ruin. She ends up auctioning herself off to Noah Crawford, a billionaire. Apparently, he's interested in purchasing her so he can have sex with her. However, that purchase will essentially get her family out of their financial woes. For that reason and that reason alone, she is more than willing to do it.

5. “Overruled” (Ema Chase)

This is definitely one of the more interesting books on this list. As you can probably guess from the title, it tells the story of a lawyer named Stanton Shaw. He is estranged from his wife, the mother of his child. He desperately wants to get back with her, but she's moved on and found love elsewhere. In a desperate, last-ditch attempt to get her back, he enlists the help of one of his friends, another lawyer named Sofia. As you can probably already imagine, things don't exactly go as planned. In fact, more things start to go wrong from there.

The book has been described as something that happens when two professional lawyers end up in a one-horse town like something straight out of the film “Steel Magnolias.” Add to that a character that seems very much like the grandmother from “Young Sheldon” and you have a hodgepodge of characters that all have strong personalities and very specific ideas of how things should go. Just reading the description of the story is enough to make most people want to go pick it up, so they can see what it's like for themselves if nothing else.

4. “The Siren” (Tiffany Reisz)

Here's an interesting story about someone who writes erotic novels for a living. In the book, that author is Named Nora Sutherlin and she eventually ends up spending a lot of time with her editor, Zachary Easton. It starts out innocently enough, with him offering to give her sessions designed to improve her writing. However, it doesn't take very long for things to heat up, a lot. You can probably guess the rest from there.

3. “Affliction” (Laurell K. Hamilton)

This book tells the story of vampire hunter Anita Blake. She doesn't just hunt vampires, either. She also sleeps with them and by all accounts, she enjoys it immensely. Throughout much of the book, she also sleeps with more than her fair share of werewolves and zombies. This book is crazy from start to finish and is definitely one of the most erotic books on the list. If you're really into something that's quite hardcore (and you want a little nod to the paranormal), you're not going to find anything more eye-popping than this one.

2. “Beauty’s Kingdom” (Anne Rice)

Popular author Anne Rice decided to write this book under a pseudonym, largely because the first ones in the series were published in the early 1980s. The story involves things like orgies and experimentation, all set in medieval times. It's quite intense and rather interesting, especially when you consider the time that it was written. After all, she published under a pseudonym because she didn't want it to take away from the work that she had already contributed as an established author. Of course, she now has her own name on the cover and has even written several other books in the series.

1. “Edge of Midnight” (Shannon McKenna)

This book tells the story of Liv and Sean. However, it doesn't dive too much into their personal stories. The only thing you really know about Sean is that he is the hero of the story and very much an alpha male. Liv tends to be quite the angry individual and she's not at all up for letting down the walls she's put up around her. In the bedroom, all of that need to control someone mixes with her anger and the two of them really get after it. What makes this book special? The intimate scenes are described in such minute detail that you might find yourself blushing while just reading about them.

Steamy Listens as Irresistible as 'Fifty Shades of Grey'

February 2, 2021

E L James 's Fifty Shades of Grey has been a prominent title in erotica for nearly a decade. Considering that it's a wildly romantic story in which character development and sexual dynamics play equally strong roles, it’s quite a standout in its genre. Ask any fan and they’ll tell you that it’s not always easy to find something that has the same kind of tension and payoff as the Fifty Shades trilogy. Here are some books and series that fans of Fifty Shades are sure to love, as they evoke similar themes, scenes, and emotions.

The natural place to start is with James's own Grey , which is told from Christian’s perspective. Dig into the familiar story of love, sex, and power from a different viewpoint and learn more about Christian’s life and youth, as well as his interpretations of every conversation with Ana Steele. Zachary Webber’s narration offers a sexy and very deliberate Christian Grey, while capturing the character’s torment and dominating attitude. This is a two-book series, which culminates with Darker .

A Lesson in Thorns

When Poe Markham takes over the private library at Thornchapel, her goal is to find out what happened to her mother years before. But she soon gets sucked into the world of this secluded manor and its intriguing owner, as well as some other interesting characters. Sara Ormenyi’s performance in A Lesson in Thorns (later paired with Zachary Webber in Feast of Sparks ) brings a darker, deeper experience to Sierra Simone’s growing series .

Hate to Want You

This first installment in the Forbidden Hearts trilogy introduces listeners to the Chandler and Kane families, who have been at odds for years. Nicholas and Livvy were youthful sweethearts, but were separated by their families. Now, they only see each other once a year, an anniversary filled with sex and the avoidance of feelings. The alternating narration of Jeremy York and Summer Morton bring even more nuance to Alisha Rai’s angsty, sexy three-audiobook series.

Tiffany Reisz’s erotic series pulls listeners into the world of writing, publishing...and BDSM. The Siren , masterfully narrated by Aeron James, opens the tale with editor Zachary Easton, who is given control over the next book by famed erotica author Nora Sutherlin. The added voices of Lilly Rhodes, Robin Rowan, and others take us through the Original Sinners saga , which currently consists of 10 full novels, two intermediary novellas, and a collection of short stories.

Bared to You

The Crossfire Series is often recommended to fans of Fifty Shades of Grey , as it follows a controlling millionaire and the woman he falls passionately in love with. Narrated by Jill Redfield (with the late series addition of Jeremy York), the audiobook does an exquisite job of sucking listeners into the glittering, sexy, traumatized lives of Gideon and Eva, which become more and more entangled the course of Sylvia Day's five novels.

Beautiful Bastard

Beautiful Bastard is the first in a series by Christina Lauren, the pen name of an author duo who met writing Twilight fanfiction. It follows an office romance featuring Bennett and Chloe, who have been working together for a while but are only just meeting in person now that Bennett has moved back Stateside from France. Bennett is exacting and obnoxious, but Chloe somehow can’t resist him. The sexy narration by Grace Grant is a great start to a complete series , which includes five full-length novels and five novellas.

Slow Surrender

Slow Surrender , the first book in Cecilia Tan’s Struck by Lightning series , introduces us to waitress Karina and domineering businessman James. They start a sexual journey of passion and fantasies, but Karina wants more from him. Lucy Rivers narrates the audiobooks in a compelling voice, which draws listeners into Karina’s mind.

The first book in Maya Bank's Enforcers trilogy , Mastered introduces us to wealthy businessman Drake and ingenue Evangeline, who meet in Drake’s nightclub when she wanders in like a fish out of water. Drake is immediately taken with her, and takes her under his wing to have her under his complete control. Jeremy York was an easy selection to portray the icy Drake, and continues to narrate the other two Enforcers novels.

When billionaire workaholic Roxanne approaches Mateo, the leader of a small and financially struggling European principality, with a sweet marriage-of-convenience proposal, she isn’t about to take no for an answer. She wants a child and he needs money—to Roxanne’s mind, it’s a fair deal. Mateo refuses to be bought. But the combination of their chemistry and the potential to save his homeland leads him to reconsider. Scarlette Hayes narrates Lush Money and its companion novel Hate Crush with care and intensity, and will hopefully continue to narrate Angelina M. Lopez’s future novels.

Just Like That

Summer is returning to the school of his youth to student-teach, and he’s both anticipating and dreading working with Fox Iseya—his former teacher and new boss. When a challenge to help Summer with his anxiety turns into a deal for exchanging kisses, their relationship develops into something neither man expected.

Madison desperately needs an assistant to help her run her erotic bookstore—and winds up hiring two. Andy is aggressive and pushes her buttons, while uptight Gabriel continually defies her training techniques. In Control , author Charlotte Stein draws listeners into a workplace threesome with startling power plays. Narrator Janice Enright strikes the perfect chord. To quote one satisfied listener: Her voice and accent is stellar. She sounds so prim and proper, but it just adds an extra layer of naughty to the story.

Three months before her wedding to her post-college sweetheart, reality show producer Annie has a one-night stand with her fitness trainer, Oksana. What’s meant to be an end to the single life becomes a steamy month-long affair between the two women, forcing both to examine their wants and needs. The Fling plunges listeners into a white-hot relationship that just might be real love. Rebekah Weatherspoon’s sexy standalone novel features engaging, alluring narration by Keira Grace.

After being left at the altar, Jade seeks solace at the Colorado ranch of her best friend, Jonah. She isn’t prepared to be blown away by his brother. Talon, a quiet, tortured man, initiates an intimacy with her that she can’t help but continue. But there are secrets on both sides, and Talon is afraid that his addiction to Jade will become an obsession. In Craving , Helen Hardt introduces listeners to the Steel brothers and many tangled passions to come. The series is ongoing, with 15 books currently available. Each installment features dual narrators, starting with the perfect pairing of Sebastian York and Neva Navarre.

Desperate Measures

In the Wicked Villains series , author Katee Robert takes familiar characters from fables and fairy tales—and turns them on their heads in scenarios meant only for adults. Lessa Lamb and Jack Calihan masterfully narrate the first in the series, Desperate Measures, a dark reimagining featuring characters from Aladdin. The series is growing, with future installments forthcoming.

The Duke I Tempted

The stodgy Duke of Westmead doesn’t want a wife or a child, but both are unfortunately required of his station. He’d rather be at his favored sex club, where he can have someone dominate him. When he enters a marriage of convenience with botanist Poppy, he doesn’t intend to share his kink with her, even as he also fights not to fall in love with her. The first volume in Scarlett Peckham’s Regency romance series, The Secrets of Charlotte Street, The Duke I Tempted is narrated with the right mix of naughtiness and heart by Holly Chandler.

Goodreads top review:  "My heart is so entirely full, it's nearly overflowing. This book was in a word; matchless. I laughed, I loved, I cried but mostly loved every beautiful little thing that led up to the last page. Now, having finished, I wish for nothing more but to go all the way back to the beginning and start again. As readers, sometimes -very rarely- you come across a book that quintessentially becomes a mantra, a new sense of hope and a burst of something you never really knew existed.I don't think I will ever forget this novel."

Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways."

Goodreads top review: "Not to be dramatic, but if there ever comes a point in time where the fate of the human civilisation is coming to an end and we need to create a time capsule to immortalise our posterity, this book better be in it. There has never been a more honest and enthralling book in the history of the world, ever. I really don't even know where to begin. It's books like this which confirm my belief that fiction will always be better than nonfiction, because it would be impossible to find a biography that could paint the story of a woman's life half as well as this did. This was extraordinary, in every sense of the word. Just the depth of this book was spectacular. not to mention the diversity and representation and writing quality and complex characters. Everything was just outstanding."

The Arrangement by Robyn Harding

The Arrangement book cover

But Gabe already has a family, whom he must put before anything else, and his relationship with Natalie soon devolves into a nightmare. Because she isn’t content with being number two in Gabe’s life – and she has no intention of giving him up . . ."

Top review: "I found myself absolutely fascinated and yet disturbed with this. It is so far removed from any reality that I have known, that I kept thinking what a great imagination that the author had. Except that this apparently is reality people! The author did a great deal of in depth research for this book and in my mind that made this even more intriguing. It was like a guilty pleasure to read this book. You know, you really shouldn't enjoy reading about stuff like this but my goodness I did! I couldn't put this down, it kept me up to the early hours of the morning."

Rush by Maya Banks

Rush Maya Banks

So what if he’s fourteen years older? Mia knows he’s way out of her league, but her attraction has only grown stronger with time. She’s an adult now, and there’s no reason not to act on her most secret desires."

Goodreads top review: "Wow!! This book was absolutely amazing!! If you are looking for a book with lots of sex in it, then here you are. Maya Banks did an amazing job creating a story that is full of passion and sex, and yet still kept a good story plot. Maya Banks opens a world of sexual fantasies that I doubt there are few who would not be turned on by this book."

Goodreads top review: "The thing about Christina Lauren's books (other than terrific characters you root for, great emotions, humor, and hot sex) is that even though you probably can predict most of what will happen, you get so hooked on the story, and you're so charmed by it, that it doesn't really matter. Their books get me every time—like I said earlier, I get a little giddy, a little emotional, and I just want more. Goodreads top review:  "Love love love. A beautiful, messy, heartbreaking love story with two endearing main characters and a whole world of topics explored including masculinity, race, addiction, chronic illness, motherhood, and writing. Goodreads top review:  "I've finished this book almost a week ago but I'm not able to stop thinking about it. A generator of emotions. Thought provoking. Beautiful writing style. And at the same time, raw and real. The ending left me with my heart shattered into million pieces. It is not only about a love story, it is about the choices we make in our lives and the result of those choices. The results that affect a lot of people at once."

And as for Daphne, surely she will attract some worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable."

Goodreads top review: "I’ve just finished reading this book and have to say, I found it an amazing storyline. I loved the characters, as I really felt that you got to know each one. I especially liked Simon's character, as he wasn’t portrayed as this perfect male lead - but rather the opposite. That’s rare to see."

Goodreads top review: "Wow, what a story, what characters, what a ride. I absolutely loved this book with a passion, so much so that it took me longer to read than any other book because I kept going back to read my favourite bits."

London's Perfect Scoundrel  by Suzanne Enoch

Cover blurb: "The ton gossips call him "Saint" - but the Marquisof St. Aubyn has well earned his reputation as London's perfect scoundrel. Evelyn Ruddick knows she should avoid him at all costs -- but the strikingly beautiful lady wants to aid the children of the Heart of Hope Orphanage, and he heads the board of trustees. Evie is determined to teach the charming, arrogant man a lesson in compassion, but it won't be so easy - especially since his touch is setting her desire aflame, making Evie yearn to submit to his passionate instruction ..."

Goodreads top review: "WOW! I loved this, especially devilishly charismatic rake, the Marquis of St. Aubyn. St. Aubyn reminded me a lot of Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent from Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas (one of the sexiest, yummiest romantic heroes, ever!), and both heroines have the same informal name, Evie, strong countenances, and kindhearted natures. If you enjoy romances with unrepentant rake heroes who just love to be bad, and spirited heroines who give as good as they get, then don’t miss this wonderful, engaging read. It’s a keeper! Big 5 stars!"
