How to Write a Report on Bus Accident

The following blog article was updated in January 2022.

No one ever expects to be seriously injured while riding on a bus. Buses are such huge vehicles that it gives riders a sense of invulnerability. But bus accidents happen all the time. Even though busses are huge, a bus passenger can still get knocked around even after a somewhat minor impact. You also have to consider that most buses don’t have seatbelts so that protection will not be available to passengers. If you are seriously injured in a bus crash, make sure a bus accident report is created and properly filed. It’s important to do what you can to make sure the bus incident report is as accurate as possible.

The Seattle bus accident lawyers at Brett McCandlis Brown & Conner PLLC , focus their practice on representing seriously injured people in the car, truck, and bus incidents. We have developed the skills and knowledge to win hard cases over decades of work.

Seattle Bus Accidents Happen Often

In the City of Seattle, in 2020, there were 106 bus accidents within the city limits . In the vast majority of those accidents (75), there were no reported injuries. During that year, four people suffered serious injuries in bus accidents, and ten people suffered from minor injuries. In 2019, there were 214 bus accidents within the city with 10 serious injuries. Based upon these numbers, if you ride the public bus system often, expect to eventually be in an accident.

Types of Bus Accidents

There are many types of busses and bussing companies that can be involved in a crash. It’s not just public city busses.

  • Public bussing services: These are the publicly-owned buses belonging to municipalities, school districts, and other types of government-run bus systems.
  • Private transportation companies: These are private bus companies and transportation services, such as shuttle buses, taxis, airport shuttles, etc.
  • Trolley and streetcars: This category would include the Lake Union Trolley or a Seattle Streetcar, for example. There are both public trolleys and privately owned trolleys.

The ownership of the buses makes these accidents hard to resolve. Both private companies and government agencies own busses. It’s a good idea to hire a law firm that has a long history of successfully handling Washington State and Seattle bus accident cases.

Who Is Potentially Responsible for the Bus Accident?

There are many people and companies that could be potentially responsible for the cause of the crash and any injuries. Passengers are not responsible unless you interfere with the bus driver in some way. Here are the potential at-fault parties in bus accidents.

The Bus Driver

The bus driver is responsible if they drove negligently and didn’t follow the rules of the road. There are many ways for a bus driver to cause a crash, including distraction, speeding, or aggressive driving. If the accident was the bus driver’s fault, then their employer would also be held responsible through the legal concept of respondeat superior. This legal concept says that, in most instances, an employer is responsible for the actions of their employees.

The Other Driver or Drivers

Just like any accident, if another driver was negligent, they would be responsible. The at-fault driver’s insurance company is responsible for the payment of compensation for any injuries. However, there are scenarios where the bus insurance company might add to the compensation. Also, your own automobile insurance company may come into play in certain scenarios.

The Bussing Company

Other than respondeat superior responsibility, the bus company can be responsible independent of their connection to their bus driver employee. In theory, an injured person can file suit against the bus company for negligent hiring, negligent supervision, or negligent retention. For example, if the bus company knew the driver had several prior bussing accidents but hired him or her anyway, this could be evidence of negligent retention. Another example is if the bussing company doesn’t properly supervise or discipline the driver for safety infractions. If the company doesn’t fire the bus driver, this could also be evidence of negligent retention. The bussing company can’t ignore safety violations.

Should You Give a Statement to an Insurance Company After a Bus Accident?

You should not give a recorded statement to an insurance adjuster from any insurance company, whether it be the bus owners’ insurance company or the at-fault driver’s insurance company. The only time you should give a recorded statement to an insurance adjuster is when your experienced Washington bus accident lawyer has agreed to it and is sitting next to you during the statement. The reason to not give a statement without a legal practitioner is that adjusters are trained at attempting to get you to say things that you may not mean. Giving an incorrect statement because you misunderstood the question, for example, could hurt you in the future. Your recorded statements could be used to contradict your testimony at trial if your case gets that far. This doesn’t mean you should not talk to the police at the scene of the accident. If the police are asking questions and requesting information from the bus passengers, make sure that the bus accident report is as accurate and full of facts as possible. The report writing on a bus accident by the police is very important. The police report is evidence during a lawsuit that can establish facts of the case and pinpoint liability.

Filing a Bus Accident Report in the U.S.: A Comprehensive Guide

write a report bus accident

Bus accidents, though less frequent than car accidents, can have devastating consequences due to the number of passengers involved and the sheer size of the vehicles. When a bus accident occurs, it’s crucial for all parties involved to understand the process of filing an accident report in the United States. This guide, brought to you by Pinkston Law Group, P.C., aims to simplify the complexities surrounding bus accident reports and emphasizes the importance of legal assistance in such situations.

Understanding Bus Accident Reporting

1. Immediate Actions Post-Accident: Immediately after a bus accident, ensuring the safety of all passengers is paramount. The bus driver or the involved parties should call emergency services to report the accident and tend to any injuries. It’s also important to secure the scene to prevent further accidents.

2. Reporting to Law Enforcement: In most states, law enforcement must be notified if a bus accident results in injuries, deaths, or significant property damage. The responding officers will create a preliminary accident report, documenting the scene, witness statements, and any immediate findings about the cause of the accident.

3. Filing a Report with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV): Several states require that a DMV accident report be filed if the accident meets certain criteria, such as exceeding a specific damage threshold or resulting in injuries or fatalities. This report is crucial for legal and insurance purposes.

4. Reporting to the Bus Company: If the bus is operated by a private company, the incident must be reported to the company as soon as possible. Public transportation accidents should be reported to the corresponding municipal authority. These entities often have their own procedures for investigating accidents.

5. Federal Reporting: In cases of severe accidents involving commercial buses, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) may step in to conduct a thorough investigation. Their findings can influence industry-wide safety standards and regulations.

The Importance of Accurate Reporting

Accurate and detailed reporting is crucial for several reasons:

  • Legal Documentation: Reports serve as official records that can be pivotal in legal claims.
  • Insurance Claims: Insurers rely on these reports to process claims related to the accident.
  • Safety Improvements: Detailed reports help authorities and companies to implement measures to prevent future accidents.

BUS & TRUCK COLLISION ON NONAPUKUR HIGHWAY; BUS DRIVER KILLED

Special Correspondent

Nonapukur; 19th October 2021: Noapara highway again witnessed a devastating accident yesterday night. A Bus and a loaded truck collided face to face which caused the death of the bus driver. The name of the driver was Nutun Shaw(45). According to the eyewitnesses, the accident took place at around 11:30 pm.

Buses and Trucks often run quite recklessly on the highway and no police patrol comes forward to regulate rash driving, said a local street vendor. Moreover, the locals have also accused the municipality of not installing sufficient light sources around the area which causes very low visibility on the streets. Due to all these reasons, that particular area of Nonapukur has become an accident-prone zone.

According to several estimates, it is the 13th accident of the year, and in almost every accident, Nonapukur witnesses deaths. Fortunately, there were no passengers on the bus as well as no conductor as the bus was returning to the depot. Though the bus driver was killed, the truck driver got severely injured and was admitted to the district hospital. According to reports, the driver was intoxicated and alcohol has been rescued from his truck. The government has ordered a high-level enquiry to find a resolution for this area.

The train was coming from Lalgola to Sealdah approximately at a speed of 110 KM per hour. The bus was completely smashed against the train which left no survivors. Among the passengers, there were 11 females, 13 males, and 4 children.

The train tried to break itself but most shockingly the train got derailed and resulted in severe injury to 11 passengers. The locals came in to help rescue the affected people and the fire brigade was informed. All of them were taken to the nearest rail hospital. Now questions are arising, how even in 2022 there are so many unregulated railway crossings all over the country.

These crossings are causing several accidents and deaths every year. The locals are also claiming that the signal is not working for a few weeks, but the concerned authority has hardly taken any action. An inquiry commission has been set up to investigate this issue.

It was yesterday night when a motorbike carrying three riders collided with a tree on NH18 and all fell to death. The riders were Female (26), Male (24), and Male (23) respectively. According to some local eyewitnesses, it was around 10:30 when the bike was coming from Gourdanga’s side at a fearsome speed of around 150 km per hour.

As soon as the accident took place, locals came to immediate help the riders. They took the three to the nearby hospital but unfortunately all were declared dead upon arrival. Typically when you're in an accident on the road, the police will complete a police report describing the accident. However, in some cases you may need to submit your own report, either to your insurance company or your state's DMV. If you need to write a motor vehicle report, take time to gather accurate information so you can describe the incident with as much detail as possible. [1] X Research source

Things You Should Know

  • Copy down the driver's license, vehicle, and insurance information from the other driver. Get contact information for any witnesses, as well.
  • Explain what happened and who was involved, including the location and nature of the accident as well as any injuries or property damage.
  • Take photos and/or create a diagram of the scene that shows what happened.

Step 1 Get identification and insurance information from the other driver.

  • Check to make sure that there are no injuries. If someone is hurt, call for help first before trying to get their information.
  • Get the other driver's license. Write down their name, home address, birth date, and gender. You'll also want the name of the state that issued their license, their license number, and the date it expires. Give them this information for yourself as well.
  • If the other driver does not have insurance or identification, call the police. Tell the police that you cannot get the required legal documents of the other driver. They will come out and handle the situation.

Step 2 Write down information about the vehicles involved.

  • Write down specifics about where there is damage. For example, you might say "Sedan has broken bumper and dent in the rear quarter panel."
  • Take down the license tag number for all the vehicles, along with the name of the state. You also might want to make note of the vehicle's VINs (vehicle identification numbers) for insurance purposes.

Step 3 Ask for identification and contact information for everyone on scene.

  • If you get their phone number, make a note of when is the best time to reach them at that number.

Step 4 Take pictures of the scene.

  • Take your photos as soon as possible after the accident occurs, so the light and weather conditions are similar. Photograph the scene from multiple angles if it is possible for you to do this safely.
  • You also might want to take pictures of all the people involved in the accident. These can be helpful later if someone claims an injury later when they seemed fine at the scene.
  • If you were injured, take pictures of your injuries as soon as possible – ideally, before they are treated by a medical professional.

Step 5 Get statements from any witnesses.

  • It's best to get a statement from a witness at the scene, and then get their phone number in case you need to follow up with them later. Many witnesses won't come forward after the accident. If possible, take a video or audio recording on your phone of their statement.
  • Write down exactly where they were when the accident occurred. If possible, take pictures of the scene from where they were standing, so you have an image of their vantage point. If there are any signs, posts, trees, or other objects obscuring their line of sight, make a note of those as well.

Step 1 List the names and identifying information of all people involved.

  • You'll also need the same information for any other drivers who were involved in the accident. If there were passengers or pedestrians also involved in the accident, provide their names, ages, and genders.
  • Get numbers of first-responder vehicles and the names and badge numbers of first responders, if possible.

Step 2 State the conditions when the accident occurred.

  • Your city or state may have a specific form for you to fill out that includes spaces for specific details, such as the weather, light, and road conditions.
  • If you don't remember the conditions and weren't able to take any photos, leave these details blank – don't just guess or look up an old weather report. You need to be able to vouch for every detail included in your report.
  • Provide any photos or videos you have showing the conditions at the time of the accident to support your case.

Step 3 Detail the location of the accident.

  • For example, if the accident occurred on the interstate, you would need to note the name and direction of the interstate as well as the mile markers or any exits before and after the accident. Include the estimated distance from the nearest marker.
  • On city streets, you also might want to include any landmarks. Describe the street, including whether there is a sidewalk or bike lane.
  • If any other property was involved, describe it as well as where it is relative to the street.

Step 4 Provide a chronological account of what happened.

  • For example, suppose the other driver rolled through an intersection and hit the side of your car while you had the right of way. You can say that you had the right of way – that's a fact. However, a statement such as "the other driver wasn't paying attention" would be an opinion.
  • If there are gaps in your memory or specific details you don't remember, state in your report that you don't remember. That way you can fill in the detail later if your memory returns.
  • If there were pedestrians involved, describe what they were doing. For example, the pedestrian may have been crossing the street in the sidewalk, or may have run out in traffic to retrieve something.

Step 5 Identify any witnesses.

  • You also might want to describe where they were located relative to the scene of the accident and what they saw. For example, the person may have been standing on the corner waiting to cross the street when the accident happened, or they may have come over afterward.
  • If you managed to get a video or recording of the witness, include it in your report. If the witness doesn't come forward, this recording can act as evidence instead.

Step 6 Discuss what happened after the accident.

  • If you or anyone else called 911, give an approximate time that call took place and describe who showed up at the scene.
  • If paramedics arrived, discuss whether anyone was treated at the scene or transported to a hospital for further treatment.

Step 7 Detail any injuries and property damage.

  • Provide a rough estimate of property damage or damage to vehicles involved in the crash. You should state specifically if you believe a vehicle to be totaled.
  • If there were any fatalities as a result of the accident, list them separately. Include the name, age, and gender of anyone injured, and classify the severity of their injuries as best you can. Describe where on the body the injury was located and the person's role in the accident. If they were immediately transported to a hospital, provide the name of the hospital where they were taken.

Step 1 Sketch out the streets.

  • Just stick to the specific road or other area where the accident took place. There's no need to include adjoining blocks or side streets if they weren't directly involved in the accident.
  • Make sure you have the correct number of lanes and that any traffic lights or signs are marked correctly.

Step 2 Orient your drawing.

  • For example, suppose the accident occurred at an intersection. You were heading north, while the other car was headed west. Draw an arrow for the cars to indicate the direction in which they're traveling, and write out each of the directions along the four sides of your drawing.

Step 3 Place the cars in the roadway.

  • If there were other cars nearby that weren't involved in the accident, you can still draw boxes for them if you want, but don't worry about getting too detailed. Other cars are only really important to the extent that they affected the ability of you or the other driver to avoid the accident.

Step 4 Include information about the impact.

  • If the speed the cars were traveling is in dispute, make a note of this on your report, but keep your reported facts objective. If you thought the driver of the other car was going faster than they claimed they were going, simply say it appeared they were going one speed, but they claim they were going another speed.

Step 5 Note the location of any witnesses.

  • If they were in another vehicle but were not involved in the accident, draw a box to represent their vehicle and put their "X" inside. Note if they were a passenger or driver of the vehicle, and where they were seated.
  • If a witness's view was partially obstructed, include whatever obstructed their view in your diagram.

Step 6 Sign and date your accident report.

  • After you sign and date your accident report, make a copy of it for your records before you submit it to the relevant authorities.
  • Generally you want to submit your accident report as soon as possible after the accident occurred. Check with the company or department where you need to send your report and find out if there's a deadline you must meet.

The accident happened between a bus and a car. The accident scene is like that a car coming from the opposite side collided head-on with the bus coming from the right side.

The collision was so strong that the front portion of the car was completely crushed and due to this the two people sitting in the car died instantly on the spot. The car was a Suzuki company model Nexa series car with car number AB01C2345 and the bus was a local city bus operated by a local transporter with bus number CD06E7890.

There were a total of 26 people on the bus, in which two people were sitting in the front along with the driver and the rest were sitting in the seats of the bus. And all the other people who were on the bus also got serious injuries.

Immediately after the accident, local people started doing rescue, I also helped in the rescue. The police reached there within 10 minutes of the accident and the ambulance also reached within 15 minutes. With everyone’s help, all the injured were put in the ambulance and sent to the hospital.

It was around 8 o’clock in the morning on Monday, November 6, when I left my house to go to school. After walking about 500 meters, I saw a terrible accident happening on the main road in which a bike and a car were involved. I want to clarify that I walk to my school from my house because my school is only 1.5 km away from my house. A collision between a car and a bike took place at a road junction in which both vehicles suffered significant damage. The happy thing is that no one died in this accident. It is true that the bike rider and the car rider have been injured. Both were taken to the hospital with the help of local people. And as far as whose fault it was, according to me, it was the fault of both the people because they were not aware while driving and due to which they came from different roads and went to collide at the junction.

It was the time of 1st January when I was going home from my office at 4 o’clock when a massive accident happened 100 meters ahead of my car. The accident happened in front of the ABC showroom on the National Highway, in which a truck was moving about 200 meters ahead of my car and an SUV came from behind at high speed and collided with the truck.

The collision was so strong that the truck overturned after the impact and the SUV was completely shattered. Immediately after the accident, a large number of local people came to the spot and started rescue work themselves and then informed the police as well as the ambulance to reach the accident site as soon as possible. There were a lot of local people present near the accident scene who were not doing anything but were just crowding around.

The accident was of a white-coloured Honda company car, which had overturned. When I asked people how this accident happened, they said that while trying to avoid a bike rider, the car lost its balance and overturned. Due to this accident, the highway got completely jammed. Police arrived half an hour after the accident and inspected the site. Police took all the bodies to the hospital with the help of ambulances and got the accident vehicle cleared from the road.

How do you write a road accident report?

Start your report with the proper date and timing. After that explain everything that you see live or listen to from some valid source. Please tell clearly how many people died and how many people were injured in road accidents. If possible, you can also tell the vehicle’s number.

What is the normal word limit for school students to write their road accident reports?

It is usually around 200 to 300 words.

Baltimore bridge collapse: a bridge engineer explains what happened, and what needs to change

When the container ship MV Dali, 300 metres long and massing around 100,000 tonnes, lost power and slammed into one of the support piers of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, the bridge collapsed in moments . Six people are presumed dead, several others injured, and the city and region are expecting a months-long logistical nightmare in the absence of a crucial transport link.

It was a shocking event, not only for the public but for bridge engineers like me. We work very hard to ensure bridges are safe, and overall the probability of being injured or worse in a bridge collapse remains even lower than the chance of being struck by lightning.

However, the images from Baltimore are a reminder that safety can’t be taken for granted. We need to remain vigilant.

So why did this bridge collapse? And, just as importantly, how might we make other bridges more safe against such collapse?

A 20th century bridge meets a 21st century ship

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was built through the mid 1970s and opened in 1977. The main structure over the navigation channel is a “continuous truss bridge” in three sections or spans.

The bridge rests on four supports, two of which sit each side of the navigable waterway. It is these two piers that are critical to protect against ship impacts.

And indeed, there were two layers of protection: a so-called “dolphin” structure made from concrete, and a fender. The dolphins are in the water about 100 metres upstream and downstream of the piers. They are intended to be sacrificed in the event of a wayward ship, absorbing its energy and being deformed in the process but keeping the ship from hitting the bridge itself.

Diagram of a bridge

The fender is the last layer of protection. It is a structure made of timber and reinforced concrete placed around the main piers. Again, it is intended to absorb the energy of any impact.

Fenders are not intended to absorb impacts from very large vessels . And so when the MV Dali, weighing more than 100,000 tonnes, made it past the protective dolphins, it was simply far too massive for the fender to withstand.

Read more: I've captained ships into tight ports like Baltimore, and this is how captains like me work with harbor pilots to avoid deadly collisions

Video recordings show a cloud of dust appearing just before the bridge collapsed, which may well have been the fender disintegrating as it was crushed by the ship.

Once the massive ship had made it past both the dolphin and the fender, the pier – one of the bridge’s four main supports – was simply incapable of resisting the impact. Given the size of the vessel and its likely speed of around 8 knots (15 kilometres per hour), the impact force would have been around 20,000 tonnes .

Bridges are getting safer

This was not the first time a ship hit the Francis Scott Bridge. There was another collision in 1980 , damaging a fender badly enough that it had to be replaced.

Around the world, 35 major bridge collapses resulting in fatalities were caused by collisions between 1960 and 2015, according to a 2018 report from the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure. Collisions between ships and bridges in the 1970s and early 1980s led to a significant improvement in the design rules for protecting bridges from impact.

A greenish book cover with the title Ship Collision With Bridges.

Further impacts in the 1970s and early 1980s instigated significant improvements in the design rules for impact.

The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering’s Ship Collision with Bridges guide, published in 1993, and the American Association of State Highway and Transporation Officials’ Guide Specification and Commentary for Vessel Collision Design of Highway Bridges (1991) changed how bridges were designed.

In Australia, the Australian Standard for Bridge Design (published in 2017) requires designers to think about the biggest vessel likely to come along in the next 100 years, and what would happen if it were heading for any bridge pier at full speed. Designers need to consider the result of both head-on collisions and side-on, glancing blows. As a result, many newer bridges protect their piers with entire human-made islands.

Of course, these improvements came too late to influence the design of the Francis Scott Key Bridge itself.

Lessons from disaster

So what are the lessons apparent at this early stage?

First, it’s clear the protection measures in place for this bridge were not enough to handle this ship impact. Today’s cargo ships are much bigger than those of the 1970s, and it seems likely the Francis Scott Key Bridge was not designed with a collision like this in mind.

So one lesson is that we need to consider how the vessels near our bridges are changing. This means we cannot just accept the structure as it was built, but ensure the protection measures around our bridges are evolving alongside the ships around them.

Photo shows US Coast Guard boat sailing towards a container ship entangled in the wreckage of a large bridge.

Second, and more generally, we must remain vigilant in managing our bridges. I’ve written previously about the current level of safety of Australian bridges, but also about how we can do better.

This tragic event only emphasises the need to spend more on maintaining our ageing infrastructure. This is the only way to ensure it remains safe and functional for the demands we put on it today.

Commentary: A Community’s Social Capital Helps It Respond to a Tragic Bus Accident

T his is not the way I was expecting to resume submitting articles to the Daily Yonder. While writing an article intending to introduce a new state-level social capital model, I received news from my hometown of Rushville, Illinois, of a horrible school bus-truck accident. All five persons involved, including three children, were killed.

Rushville is a rural community in West Central Illinois. It is the county seat of Schuyler County and its 6,900 residents. The folks in Schuyler County work hard, they play hard, and they care for their neighbors. It is a small but mighty place where people come together for support and mutual aide. Where hearts are big, and compassion has almost no bounds. Forgive me for adding this, Rushville is full of the best of bonded social capital.

If there is a typical small, rural Midwest community, Rushville is it. The town is surrounded by corn and soybeans, and it is home to some of the best deer hunting in the world. Volunteering is important; people are eager to pitch in and help.

Just before noon on March 11, the strength of social ties was tested in the most challenging of ways when a truck hauling a tandem load of sand and a school bus collided on the western edge of Rushville. An explosion and fire consumed the bus. Those who died were a 5-year-old, a pair of 3-year-olds, the bus driver, and the truck driver.

I live four hours away in Des Moines, Iowa, and I am removed from the day-to-day happenings back home. I learned of the accident from a news alert on my cell phone and called my sister who lives in Rushville. She had been running errands on the same road where the accident occurred, and she could see the plume of smoke from a distance. She spoke to some of her friends as word of the accident began spreading through town. She thought she might have known one of the families who had children in the crash.

The news spread quickly. People on social media expressed sadness and grief while showing restraint from any kind of editorializing about the nature of the accident. There was not much doubt community members were grieving, but grief was not defining the moment.

There were calls on social media for people to support families in a variety of ways. People offered their prayers and moral support. Other folks were planning fundraisers, impromptu bake sales, and establishing GoFundMe accounts. Printers designed T-shirts to be sold for fundraisers. There were memorial accounts established at local banks. On the evening of March 13, a public vigil was held in the park on the square in Rushville. Central Park was filled.

On Sunday, March 17, the Schuyler County Fair Board held a benefit fish fry. The board made it clear from the start that while this was a fundraiser, it was also about building community. Whether or not you could afford a freewill donation, you would not be turned away. If you were hungry, show up. If you could not leave the house, your meal would be delivered to you. In eight hours, 4,000 meals were distributed.

The region surrounding Rushville responded, too. Members of a car club drove the 50 miles from Quincy, Illinois, to Rushville to contribute.

In the 1990’s the community came together to create a non-profit organization aimed to restore the local movie theater. Shares were sold for $100. The project was an overwhelming success. Through the years, the town has rallied around the Princess Theater. In the week following the accident, the theater staff had the opportunity to return the favor. The theater sold purple and gold “Rocket Strong” popcorn at curbside, raising over $4,300 to assist the families.

There have always been strong bonded relationships in Schuyler County. Residents can rely on neighbors and strangers in good times and tough times. In a new county measure of social capital (I’ll be introducing that model soon) Schuyler County’s index is impressive.

I didn’t intend to make this about an upcoming social capital index. This article is a public acknowledgement of the wonderful spirit of my hometown. This is also something that is long overdue. It is my opportunity to say, “thank you, Rushville.” You have done things that I knew you would. As I would expect, grief is something to which you respond, not something that defines you.

South Africa bus crash leaves at least 45 dead after vehicle plunges off bridge and catches fire

A bus in South Africa has plunged off a bridge into a ravine and caught fire, killing 45 of the 46 people on board, the transport ministry says.

An eight-year-old child was the sole survivor and had been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The vehicle had been heading from neighbouring Botswana to Moria in the north of the country, the ministry said in a statement.

"It is alleged that the driver lost control, colliding with barriers on the bridge, causing the bus to go over the bridge and hitting the ground, where it caught fire," the statement said.

The people on board were reportedly travelling to Moria for the Easter weekend church service, the ministry said.

Two officials in hi-vis and a woman in blue uniform stand in front of a police car talking.

Rescue operations continued until the late hours of Thursday (local time), with some bodies burned beyond recognition, and others trapped inside the debris or scattered over the crash scene.

The bus had a Botswana licence plate, local authorities said, but the nationalities of the passengers were still being checked.

Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga went to the scene of the crash and promised a full inquiry would be held into its cause.

While South Africa has one of the African continent's most developed road networks, it also suffers from one of the worst safety records.

Several hours before the crash, President Cyril Ramaphosa appealed to South Africans to take care when travelling during the Easter week.

"Let's do our best to make this a safe Easter," he said in a statement.

"Easter does not have to be a time where we sit back and wait to see statistics on tragedy or injuries on our roads."

The bus fell from a major bridge linking two hillsides near Mmamatlakala in Limpopo province, about 300 kilometres north of Johannesburg.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — A bus carrying worshippers on a long-distance trip from Botswana to an Easter weekend church gathering in South Africa plunged off a bridge on a mountain pass Thursday and burst into flames as it hit the rocky ground below, killing at least 45 people, authorities said. The only survivor was an 8-year-old child who was receiving medical attention for serious injuries.

The Limpopo provincial government said the bus veered off the Mmamatlakala bridge in northern South Africa and plunged 50 meters (164 feet) into a ravine before busting into flames.

Search operations were ongoing, the provincial government said, but many bodies were burned beyond recognition and trapped inside the vehicle, while others had been thrown from the bus.

The crash happened near the town of Mokopane, which is about 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of the South African capital, Pretoria.

Hours after the crash, smoke seeped from the mangled, burned wreck underneath the concrete bridge. Authorities said it appeared that the driver lost control and the bus ploughed into the barriers along the side of the bridge and then over the edge. The driver was one of the dead.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the victims appeared to be all from Botswana and had been on their way to the town of Moria in Limpopo for a popular Easter weekend pilgrimage that attracts hundreds of thousands of worshippers from South Africa and neighboring countries who follow the Zion Christian Church.

Ramaphosa had phoned Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi to offer his condolences and said the South African government would do all it can to help, according to a statement from Ramaphosa’s office.

Provincial authorities said the bus had a Botswana license plate.

South African Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga was in Limpopo province for a road safety campaign and changed plans to visit the crash scene after hearing the “devastating news,” the national Department of Transport said. She said there was an investigation underway into the cause of the crash and offered her condolences to the families of the victims.

The South African government often warns motorists to be cautious during the Easter holidays, which is a particularly busy and dangerous time for road travel. More than 200 people died in road crashes during the Easter weekend last year.

Just a day before the bus crash, the South African government called on people to be extra careful on Thursday and Friday because of the expected high volumes traveling by road to Moria.

The Zion Christian Church has its headquarters in Moria and this year is the first time its Easter pilgrimage is set to go ahead since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic.

8-Year-Old Survives Bus Plunge Off Bridge That Left 45 People Dead

The bus, which was carrying people from Botswana to an Easter weekend pilgrimage in South Africa, fell 165 feet into a ravine.

Reporting from Johannesburg

An 8-year-old girl was the sole survivor after a bus carrying 46 people on their way to an Easter weekend pilgrimage in South Africa on Thursday plunged 165 feet from a bridge into a ravine and burst into flames, according to a local department of transportation.

The bus was traveling from Botswana to Moria, a religious pilgrimage site in South Africa’s northeast, when it careered off a bridge winding through the Mmamatlakala mountain pass after the driver “lost control,” the department said in a statement.

Forty-five people, including the driver, were killed.

The girl was receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital, the Limpopo Province department of transportation in South Africa said in a statement . The child was in serious condition, according to another government statement.

“Rescue operations continued until the late hours of Thursday evening, as some bodies were burned beyond recognition, others trapped inside the debris and others scattered on the scene,” the transportation department said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa called his counterpart in Botswana, President Mokgweetsi Masisi, to extend his condolences, the president’s office said in a statement released late Thursday.

The crash occurred in a scenic, mountainous area of winding roads and sweeping vistas about three and a half hours north of Johannesburg. The road on a high overpass bent sharply over a ravine flanked on both sides by rocky, tree-covered slopes.

A man wearing a white shirt and red cap walked along a stretch of an overpass, with the damaged guardrail behind him.

The area attracts a lot of traffic on Easter weekend for a pilgrimage to Moria, the headquarters of the Zion Christian Church, one of the largest in the country. Mr. Ramaphosa visited last year’s pilgrimage, the first one since the Covid-19 pandemic. South African border officials had said they were bracing for an influx of visitors for this year’s pilgrimage.

The nationalities of the victims have not yet been determined.

The tragedy struck as South Africans prepared for a four-day weekend, with public holidays on Friday and Monday.

Around major holidays, the South African authorities often take extra measures like police roadblocks and publicity campaigns to help prevent traffic accidents. On Wednesday, South Africa’s minister of transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, started an Easter road-safety campaign, noting that traffic accidents often spiked during the holiday.

“Easter is a time for celebration, but it is also a time when roads can be more dangerous due to increased traffic and holiday festivities,” the ministry warned .

Africa has historically had among the highest road-fatality rates in the world, according to data from the World Bank and the World Health Organization .

South Africa had more than 12,400 road fatalities in 2022, the most recent year for which statistics are available. The Automobile Association of South Africa called the traffic deaths a “national crisis” in a statement released last year. The association argued that the government needed to invest more in road safety and to enforce traffic laws better.

“Unless these two issues are dealt with, our country’s abysmal road safety situation will never improve,” it said.
