Larger Format

Offset presses can print on larger papers. For example, a 40″ press can accommodate a flat page size of approximately 25″x38″.

  eBook Conversions

Ebook conversion services provide additional publishing opportunities..

CHG can convert your book to an eBook. Our eBook conversion services include converting your content from book files. They can be viewed on all Apple devices, iPad, Kindles, Nook, Android, and Mobipocket readers. Both print and eBook versions requires its own unique ISBN.

We only convert files to eBooks for the books we print.

Kindle Mobi Conversion Services

We will help you decide which is the correct Kindle format to convert to based on your overall goal for your book’s digital availability.  We convert the EPUB to the MOBI format for additional quality checks, and it is tested on all kindle devices before finalized.

ePub Conversions

As ePUB is an open-source file format, it is essential to format the file so that it works seamlessly on all platforms. Send us your book to decide which is the right file format (epub2, epub3, children’s graphic books) for your manuscript. We offer fast and affordable ePUB conversion services.

Fixed Layout

For files that are very heavy on graphics, formatting is essential to maintain the layout. When this is the case, we recommend fixed-layout formats. For example, Children graphic books would need to use Fixed Layout, ensuring the book and its graphics are translated correctly.

You Just Found an Amazing Printer with Book Smarts

Eighty years’ experience taught us a lot about the book market. One of the most important lessons was understanding that the market constantly changes. Adapt or perish. It’s simple and harsh. Responding to market dynamics helped make us North America’s third-largest book manufacturer. In short, gaining book smarts enabled us to better serve you, the publisher.

Rising to the Challenge

The past few years have been especially stressful for book publishers. Supply-chain issues. Changing demand. Paper Shortages.  Rising costs. Digital disruption. And increased competition, among others. More will emerge.

That’s why book publishers—including many middle-market publishers—trust Walsworth with their manufacturing needs. We serve publishers in a wide range of segments—adult and juvenile trade, el-hi and higher education, professional, scientific and technical, religious, coffee table, association and more.

Adaptive Know How

You gain access to the most important print and fulfillment solutions in the marketplace, including:

Print Platforms

Encompass advanced web heatset and sheetfed technology (in up to 10 colors), as well as digital printing systems for short run and on-demand needs. Consistent and reliable quality comes free of charge thanks to our G7® Master Qualification from IDEAlliance and Master Printers of America status.

Paper Services

Our paper management team works side-by-side with you to identify and secure paper stocks to meet your budget and branding goals. An extensive in-house paper selection provides high value while eliminating inventory costs for you. Plus, our team is well-versed in everything related to environmental paper selection.

Bindery Options

Choose from Smyth Sewn, perfect, and wire-o binding, as well as a wide variety of hardcover and soft cover specialty binding capabilities, including paperback. You also gain access to special finishing which makes your books stand out. Capabilities like embossing, spot UV, lamination and laser cutting, along with gilding, gatefolds and ribboning.

Fulfillment and Distribution Models

You know from experience how time and money dominate the fulfillment end. Take advantage of our customized, demand-based and scalable systems for complete lifecycle management. There’s no need to invest in order processing and inventory management systems when you can offload those tasks to an expert.

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

2022 Book Printing Market Outlook: Positivity, But Challenges Persist

writing books manufacturer

When defining the outlook for book manufacturing in the year ahead, John Galligan, president of Bradford & Bigelow in Newburyport, Massachusetts, uses an apt analogy considering the topic at hand: “It’s a tale of two cities,” he says. Galligan is referring to the marked difference between the outlook at the beginning of this year to the outlook now, with regard to the ongoing supply chain challenges.

In Printing Impressions’ Book Manufacturing Outlook for 2021 , demand outstripping supply was already emerging as a leading concern, and as the Book Manufacturers Institute (BMI) published its "State of the Book Industry 2021," Executive Director Matt Baehr commented: “As we move forward, economic and labor trends, along with supply chain issues, will affect our industry greatly.”

There is no getting away from it, these challenges will remain top of mind going into 2022 and the headache itʼs causing for the book manufacturing segment looks likely to endure for the foreseeable future. “To manage this supply chain crisis, we’re advising our clients of three key things,” Galligan says. “No. 1, communicate. No. 2, prioritize. And No. 3, consider that dates will need to be extended.”

Paper and Labor Shortages Take a Toll

Adi Chinai

Adi Chinai, president of King Printing in Lowell, Massachusetts, agrees that we are yet to see a resolution on the horizon, and paints a picture of a vicious cycle compounding the issue: “We’re seeing a lot of people worried about the shortages increasing their buying pattern, which is only exacerbating some of these constraints. As things normalize little by little as we continue through next year, I hope that some of the shortages on labor and raw materials will level out. Unfortunately, I think it’s going to continue for a little while longer.”

Perhaps the most significant issue is the inability to obtain sufficient quantities of paper. There are seemingly a number of contributing factors, chief among them being the impact of the pandemic on supply chains, as well as extreme weather events affecting the production of raw materials, and fluctuating patterns of demand since early 2020. Businesses in the book manufacturing space are looking at soaring prices and long lead times, forcing them to absorb costs, pass them onto customers, or find ways to boost productivity and efficiency.

Todd Roth

“Getting paper is the current challenge,” points out Todd Roth, VP of manufacturing and distribution, Core Publishing Solutions, in Eagan, Minnesota. “We’ve been fortunate to have many long-term relationships with both merchants and directly with paper mills, but even with that we’ve had to work hand-in-hand on how to make projects work for our customers.”

Despite the turbulence, Roth takes a “glass half full” approach to the paper shortages: “I appreciate our partners in that space; it hasn’t been easy for them to ramp up capacity to match what’s happening in the market. But I will say, the people in the book market space, whether it’s on the publishing side or the supplier side, are a good group of people trying to get the products out the door to service readers, which is exciting.”

John Galligan

  • John Galligan

Galligan offers some additional insight into the paper problem: “The paper market is extended because paper mills are being converted to packaging mills, so paper lead times are much more extended than they were before and capacity is an issue. I don’t see a resolution in the foreseeable future.” On top of this, Galligan also cites the lack of new paper mills being built and publishers “reshoring” significant print volumes to North America from Asia and thus extending lead times for North American paper mills as factors in the paper shortage.

Bill Clockel, VP of sales at Integrated Books International in Sterling, Virginia, echoes the observation that mills are redirecting efforts to other products, noting: “Paper mills are not only cutting back, but they’re switching from book grade papers to, in their view, more profitable types of paper products. So even though some mills might have closed, more likely than not they’re not making book papers anymore. That’s the biggest problem that we see. There are other challenges with obtaining consumables, but paper clearly is the biggest one.”

Another shortage taking its toll is the scarcity of labor. “The challenge that we have at the moment is getting enough people,” Roth explains, adding that they are currently offering incentives including hiring and referral bonuses to attract new staff. Galligan agrees that labor “is an issue nationwide” and is focused on demonstrating how valued employees are at Bradford & Bigelow. As labor shortages bite and digital production in the book manufacturing sector ramps up, automation is becoming all the more crucial. Roth says: “Because of the stresses of finding labor and the cost of labor, automation is imperative. For those that can’t invest in automation, it’s going to be more and more difficult.”

Market Remains Buoyant Despite Challenges

Of course, it’s not all doom and gloom in the book manufacturing sector. During the pandemic the market remained buoyant as pandemic-related lockdowns and restrictions brought about a reading renaissance of sorts, and there are plenty of reasons to remain optimistic about the market as we move into 2022. The “BMI State of the Book Industry 2021” finds that 29.4% of commercial printers expect the book market to grow during the next one to two years, while only 19.1% expect a decline, and just over half (51.5%) expect it to hold steady. A confident Chinai says: “We remain bullish that the segment will continue to stay strong for the rest of the year, into 2022, and even as 2023 approaches.”

The interviewees speak from experience when they forecast positivity in book manufacturing for the year ahead. Integrated Books International upgraded to two Canon varioPRINT iX series sheetfed inkjet presses prior to the onset of COVID, and is continuing to invest further. “We were fortunate enough before the pandemic to purchase new equipment and increase our capacity,” Clockel explains, “and we have new binding lines and new casing-in lines coming in this month and next month. We’re in a good position in terms of our capabilities.”

In the 2021 outlook article, Roth cited a production potential of four billion digital pages for the year, but was surprised to see a significant growth in Core Publishing’s web offset work over the past year. “Looking at the numbers, we’re going to hit 16 billion pages this year, which is a lot higher than I had anticipated,” he notes. Elaborating on the market in general, Roth adds: “It has been a pretty stable market over the last five to seven years, and now it’s expanding again and the focus remains strong. That’s encouraging for all of us in the publishing or book manufacturing space.”

Inkjet Book Manufacturing Continues to Swell

The outlook for 2021 detailed the growing influence of digital inkjet, and that’s very much still on the agenda as we cast our eyes to 2022. Digital isn’t new to the book manufacturing market, but inkjet advancements are shaking things up, allowing publishers to capitalize on evolving demand, boost productivity, and add value with additional services.

According to IT Strategies, as cited in the Memjet and NAPCO Research report “Enhancing Book Publishers’ Ability to Respond to Changing Market Demands,” more than 10% of all book pages are now printed on production inkjet presses, a figure predicted to grow at double-digit rates moving forward, and the report “The Role of Inkjet Printing and Automation in Powering Industry 4.0 in Book Publishing” from the BMI and NAPCO Research, states that around half (48%) of book printers indicated that they were currently using a production inkjet press to print books. Galligan foresees that inkjet will continue to grow, adding that Bradford & Bigelow is expanding its inkjet capabilities.

Chinai views inkjet as undoubtedly the future for book manufacturing. “We’re very bullish on inkjet book manufacturing. It’s been changing the way that publishers stay in print; it’s evolved into a platform that allows you to print short, medium, and you even push it to print long. So publishers have really started to benefit from it, and it’s allowed backlists to stay alive, and frontlists to come forward quicker and in a more dynamic fashion.”

As production inkjet in book manufacturing matures, the technology is both influencing new trends and allowing new trends to be fully realized, and an unsurprising attraction from an end user perspective is the ability to get more creative with color. Chinai adds: “Publishers are also starting to recognize that certain book designs will lend themselves for more success with inkjet.”

Roth and Core Publishing Solutions are also enthusiastic about inkjet: “We’ve invested in inkjet technology and corresponding finishing solutions, which has brought us a number of new relationships with publishers in the color space that we didn’t have in the past. That trend is likely here to stay as we go forward, as it creates great flexibility for publishers.”

According to the BMI’s “State of the Book Industry 2021,” the industry continues to head in the direction of self-publishers, independent publishers, and print-on-demand, so it will be interesting to monitor how these trends continue to impact and restructure manufacturing in the sector.

Clockel notes how publishers are rethinking their inventory management. “With the uncertainty in the markets, publishers first and foremost are trying to cut back their initial printing quantities,” he explains. “Publishers are saying that they’re going to reprint more frequently in smaller quantities, so instead of doing one run of 1,000, they might do three 300 runs through the course of the year, moving to more of a stock replenishment model.”

Overall, there is a clear message of optimism in a segment that has fared pretty well during the pandemic, but ongoing supply challenges and shortages continue to cast a long shadow. Investment in state-of-the-art digital inkjet equipment (either as the future of the plant’s production or to complement offset capabilities) and workflow automation; maintaining strong relationships with partners, whether that’s directly with paper mills or merchants, publishing companies, book manufacturing colleagues or others; and keeping a close eye on turbulent supply chains will put book manufacturers in a strong position to ride out the storm and enjoy a prosperous 2022.

Book Manufacturers

Manufacturing for self-publishers and small publishers.

Book manufacturers and book printing brokers, What is it all about? It's about high-quality books at a reasonable cost.

Just because you read a lovely book that prints in a particular country, it does not mean that all printers in that country will print your book with that quality, those materials, at that cost, or with the customer service that you expect.

We have many years of experience.

Our experience includes offset printing in signature, process color expertise, options for books, book design, finance, logistics, and negotiation in brokering book manufacturers products.

Star Print Brokers does not print books in China for a variety of reasons . Our company provides top quality with the printers we use, great customer service, and lower costs with our book manufacturers.

Although we do print in the USA, it is seldom. Our select printers provide the top quality we demand, along with materials and options not found elsewhere, plus the cost is much lower than in the USA.

SPB offers products we broker with only a handful of book manufacturers.

Our book manufacturers book styles primarily include hardcover books, soft cover books, and Wire-O book printing. Secure and beautiful book binding is just part of printing great books.

Why use Star Print Brokers to broker products from book manufacturers?

Self-publishers are looking to the best quality at a reasonable cost. All printers do not print books. All book printers do not necessarily print and bind quality books well.

Examine a book that is closest to the quality that you want for your books.

This is where Star Print Brokers comes in and why we are still in business since 1999. Not only do we know the industry, but we also know where to get the work done and for a good cost. We make our profit negotiating low costs. The best printers are eager to get and maintain our volume book printing.

What about customer service?

Most importantly, we are not a representative for any one printer. In other words, we are not their representative. We represent you the self-publisher. Our priority is the self-publisher and we have only your best interests; not those of the printer. Now that is true customer service! Let us be your representative.

Author Branding: How I Built an Author Brand That Sold 6+ Million Books

by Marianne Richmond | 0 comments

An author brand is what makes your work unique or distinctly you. It tells readers (and potential readers!) what to expect from you as an author as well as what to expect from your books. Today, let's look at how to build an author brand.

Author Branding

This is part of our ongoing series on How to Write a Children's Book. Learn more about how to write and publish a children's book here .

What is An Author Brand?

Think of one of your favorite authors, maybe a children's book author, since that's what I write. For little ones, it might be Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. And for older kids, perhaps you like Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

When you purchase one of these books, you know what to expect. Eric Carle offers soothing rhymes and stories with bright and cheery collage artwork. Jeff Kinney, on the other hand, gives readers funny, endearing stories featuring his signature cartoon protagonist, Greg.

These are two examples from successful authors of a powerful author brand.

An author brand is what makes your work unique or distinctly you. It's the collection of impressions you make across your interactions with readers, including your books, social media , and face-to-face meetings.

Your brand tells readers what to expect from you as an author, as well as what to expect from your books, and it is built over time.

Why Do You Need an Author Brand

There are a LOT of books out there for readers to choose from. Why would someone choose your books in the sea of options? One answer is your author brand.

Developing an author brand ensures that you're presenting yourself and your books consistently over time. This is part of growing your author business and author platform! You are cultivating an emotional connection with your audience.

When you hear someone effuse, “Oh, I LOVE _______'s books,” you are hearing a response to a strong author brand.  The “why” of this love is an insight into brand.

Just as your book cover is a promise of the story inside your pages, an author brand is a promise to your customers of what they can expect from YOU and your creations over time.

Think of it as a relationship. When you think of a good friend, you might say, “I love my friend, Julia, because she is funny and thoughtful and loves camping and other outdoor adventures!” You are responding to the “who” of Julia, similar to how you respond to the “who” of an author.

Using my books, for example, I create books that help people share their heart and connect with those they love. Over and over, I hear from readers that my books give them the words they want and need to convey to their children and families. My books are emotional, gentle, and sentiment driven. Often, it's your customers who will give you insight into your brand!

How to Create an Author Brand

This process of creating an author brand is part organic and part how-to, because your writing is a direct output from your thoughts, feelings, ideas and creative storytelling. However, in the interest of offering you some things to consider,  I recommend taking yourself through the following thought process to discover your author brand.

Who Are You?

Do a personal inventory of your characteristics. Are you emotional, funny, sarcastic, playful, assertive, thoughtful, spiritual?  Are you passionate about anti-bullying, social justice, neuro-diversity, adoption, God, food, technology, science, or the arts?

My guess is your writing is an outpouring from the very heart of who you are, so it helps to familiarize yourself with …. yourself!

For the sake of example, let's say I'm a witty foodie who loves organic cooking. What type of kids cookbook might be created from this personal brand versus from someone who is a quiet, romantic baker passionate about reviving her grandmother's family recipes?

The reading experience created by both of these individuals points to one's author brand. In previous articles, we've discussed knowing why you are writing your books, and that knowledge comes in handy here, too.

Know Your Reader

If you are true to yourself, your reader will likely emerge, because they want to receive what you offer through your creations. This is your target market or target reader .

If you, like Mo Willems, for example, are known for writing funny children's books (he is the brain behind Knuffle Bunny and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus ) with a deeper message, you'll work to attract the readers looking for this, too!

But what exactly are people responding to? The answer is your brand voice !

Identify Your Brand Voice

Think of the strongest product brands you know, for example, Nike, Lululemon or Trader Joe's. What's consistent across these three brands? You know what you're going to get from them in terms of products and customer experience.

It's not so different as an author.

Imagine how someone would describe the “experience” of reading your books and/or interacting with your content. How would someone describe you and your books if they were telling a friend about you? That might give you an inking as to your brand voice!

According to the Content Marketing Institute, a brand voice is a consistent voice that enables your brand to be an easily identified and authoritative source in your area of expertise.

How do you figure out your brand voice and begin to implement it?  A helpful exercise is to brainstorm a list of words that define your personality: quirky, heartfelt, adventurer, honest, sincere, teacher, to-the-point, spiritual, assertive, etc.

Now, whittle this list down to just a few words. How do these adjectives come across in your creations and other communications with your audience?

It's important to note here that voice goes beyond the words your write. It's all the ways you connect with your customer including your books, your website, your author bio, your social media posts, and your in-person appearances.

Consider these your customer touch points.

Write a Brand Promise

Building on what we've talked about, I recommend you write a brand promise to connect with your target audiences. This is a short phrase that describes the value  you are delivering to customers. This phrase should be benefit driven.

For my books, my brand promise is: Books to share your heart and connect with those you love.

It may help you to look at the brand promise of larger companies to get your own mind brainstorming the possibilities. For example, Starbucks exists “to inspire and nurture the human spirit—one person, one cup, one neighborhood at a time.”

What might be your promise to your ideal reader? This clarity can help you focus which will hopefully lead to more book sales!

Review All Your Customer Touch Points

There are many ways a reader can experience an author, whether an indie author or a traditionally published author. As part of formulating your author brand strategy and marketing plan, you can consider the following list and ask if your brand voice is being communicated consistently.

The strongest author brands will ensure their voice is “heard” in a myriad of ways:

  • Social posts and social media profiles.  The content and topics you post and talk about should feel consistent for your brand across any social media platforms where you interact.
  • Author Headshot and Bio.  Your author photo and bio can be a great way to introduce yourself. Are you dressed casually? Do you have a signature outfit, hat or color scheme? Do you always wear red tennis shoes? Include a Q and A on your website answering the questions you get the most!
  • Newsletter.  Time and again, we hear your email list is your biggest marketing tool for connecting directly with a reader who is choosing to have you show up in their mailbox. How can you deliver value to your ideal customer?
  • Author logo and website.  Is there a particular color palette and font that conveys the spirit of your voice?
  • Blog posts . What blog categories and topics might you write about that support your target reader?
  • Podcast.  What topics would be consistent with your brand?
  • In-person readings . How does your true personality shine through? If you want humor to be part of your brand, how does this come through in person?
  • Speaking events.  What type of events would make sense for you to pursue? When people meet you in person, will they be surprised when they interact with you or will they think, “This is exactly who I was expecting to meet!”
  • Media kit and business cards.  Ensure the look of these items reflects a similar vibe as your other graphic elements like your website.
  • Book marketing.  Brainstorm marketing ideas that convey your brand. If you write mysteries for kids, you might consider hosting a scavenger hunt for kids or featuring mini mysteries to solve on your website.

Lest you think that being a children's author is just about the writing, I'm here to assure you it's so much more! It's about knowing yourself, finding the people who want to know you and consistently delivering on what you promise.

Today, take fifteen minutes to brainstorm how others might describe you and your writing. Start by making a personal inventory of your characteristics. Then describe the themes and messages that seem to always come through in your writing. Finally, write a draft of your brand promise: a short phrase that describes the value you are delivering to customers.

Trump promotes Lee Greenwood's 'God Bless The USA Bible': What to know about the book and its long journey

writing books manufacturer

  • Former president Donald Trump encourages supporters to buy Lee Greenwood's "God Bless The USA Bible," a project inspired by Nashville country musician's hit song.
  • Resurgent version of Greenwood's Bible project a modified version from original concept, a change that likely followed 2021 shake-up in publishers.

After years with few updates about Lee Greenwood’s controversial Bible, the project is again resurgent with a recent promotion by former President Donald Trump.

“All Americans need to have a Bible in their home and I have many. It’s my favorite book,” Trump said in a video posted to social media Tuesday, encouraging supporters to purchase the “God Bless The USA Bible.” “Religion is so important and so missing, but it’s going to come back.”

Greenwood — the Nashville area country musician whose hit song “God Bless the USA” inspired the Bible with a similar namesake — has long been allies with Trump and other prominent Republicans, many of whom are featured in promotional material for the “God Bless The USA Bible.” But that reputational clout in conservative circles hasn’t necessarily translated to business success in the past, largely due to a major change in the book’s publishing plan.

Here's what to know about the Bible project’s journey so far and why it’s significant it’s back in the conservative limelight.

An unordinary Bible, a fiery debate

The “God Bless The USA Bible” received heightened attention since the outset due to its overt political features.

The text includes the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, Pledge of Allegiance, and the lyrics to the chorus to Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA.” Critics saw it as a symbol of Christian nationalism, a right-wing movement that believes the U.S. was founded as a Christian nation.

A petition emerged in 2021 calling Greenwood’s Bible “a toxic mix that will exacerbate the challenges to American evangelicalism.” From there, a broader conversation ensued about the standards by which publishers print Bibles.

Gatekeeping in Bible publishing

Greenwood’s early business partner on the project, a Hermitage-based marketing firm called Elite Source Pro, initially reached a manufacturing agreement with the Nashville-based HarperCollins Christian Publishing to print the “God Bless The USA Bible.”

As part of that agreement, HarperCollins would publish the book but not sell or endorse it. But then HarperCollins reversed course , a major setback for Greenwood’s Bible.

The reversal by HarperCollins followed a decision by Zondervan — a publishing group under HarperCollins Christian Publishing and an official North American licensor for Bibles printed in the New International Version translation — to pass on the project. HarperCollins said the decision was unrelated to the petition or other public denunciations against Greenwood’s Bible.

The full backstory: Lee Greenwood's 'God Bless the USA Bible' finds new printer after HarperCollins Christian passes

A new translation and mystery publisher

The resurgent “God Bless The USA Bible” featured in Trump’s recent ad is an altered version of the original concept, a modification that likely followed the publishing shake-up.

Greenwood’s Bible is now printed in the King James Version, a different translation from the original pitch to HarperCollins.

Perhaps the biggest mystery is the new publisher. That manufacturer is producing a limited quantity of copies, leading to a delayed four-to-six weeks for a copy to ship.

It’s also unclear which business partners are still involved in the project. Hugh Kirkman, who led Elite Service Pro, the firm that originally partnered with Greenwood for the project, responded to a request for comment by referring media inquiries to Greenwood’s publicist.

The publicist said Elite Source Pro is not a partner on the project and the Bible has always been printed in the King James Version.

"Several years ago, the Bible was going to be printed with the NIV translation, but something happened with the then licensor and the then potential publisher. As a result, this God Bless The USA Bible has always been printed with the King James Version translation," publicist Jeremy Westby said in a statement.

Westby did not have the name of the new licensee who is manufacturing the Bible.

Trump’s plug for the “God Bless The USA Bible” recycled language the former president is using to appeal to a conservative Christian base.

“Our founding fathers did a tremendous thing when they built America on Judeo-Christian values,” Trump said in his video on social media. “Now that foundation is under attack perhaps as never before.”

Author Interviews

Don winslow ends trilogy, and his writing career, with final novel 'city in ruins'.

SSimon

Scott Simon

NPR's Scott Simon talks to best-selling suspense author Don Winslow about what he says is his final novel, "City in Ruins."

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

Danny Ryan, who's been a Rhode Island mobster, dockworker and fugitive from the law, is now a pillar of the community in Las Vegas. He's got a palatial home to which good citizens come to pay homage and enjoy his hospitality, his young son he loves and the companionship - well, three times a week, anyway - of an accomplished and compelling woman he respects. What could possibly go wrong? "City In Ruins" is the third and final novel in the bestselling Danny Ryan trilogy by Don Winslow. It follows "City On Fire" and "City Of Dreams," and Don Winslow says quite explicitly, "City Of Ruins" is my final book - no loopholes I could detect. He joins us now from Julian, Calif. Thanks so much for being with us.

DON WINSLOW: Thanks for having me. I appreciate it.

SIMON: The book opens with an implosion, a famous old Las Vegas hotel, now owned by Danny Ryan, being brought down from the inside. Is implosion a kind of theme for Danny Ryan's life, too?

WINSLOW: Yeah, it sure is. Looking over the arc of these three books, I think we're looking at a certain kind of self-destruction with dynamite, if you will, or explosives that were laid many years earlier on a long fuse, to torture the metaphor, and so implosion's definitely a theme.

SIMON: In earlier books, Danny had used what I'll just refer to as ill-gotten gains from a criminal enterprise to buy his way into a respectable hotel and gaming enterprise. He's got a dream. In fact, a hotel - I guess it's called the Dream in Italian.

WINSLOW: It is. Yeah, Il Sogno.

SIMON: Tell us about this place he wants to bring into being.

WINSLOW: Well, he wants to bring into being a new kind of megahotel where people walk in and it's literally a dream with images shifting constantly on the walls of beauty and action and all kinds of things. And I think it's reflective of his own dream of trying to create a new kind of life for himself and for his son.

SIMON: What stands in the way?

WINSLOW: Well, a number of things. For one thing, this valuable piece of real estate that this old hotel sat on is critical to power on the Las Vegas Strip. And he basically undermines a rival in order to acquire it. And then it turns out that both Danny and this rival have mob ties from the past that each of them is trying to escape and trying to leave behind him, and neither one of them can. And so those things really get in the way of Danny's dream.

SIMON: You've written so many other books over the years, including "Savages," "The Force," "The Cartel," bestsellers made into screen properties. What's kept you coming back to Danny Ryan?

WINSLOW: You know, it took me almost 30 years to complete this trilogy. You know, it's funny. You look back on your life. When I started the Danny Ryan books, my now-adult and married son was a toddler. What I was - set out to do was to write a fully contemporary crime epic that took its stories and characters, however, from the Greek and Roman classics, principally the Aeneid, but also the Odyssey and the Iliad and certain Greek tragic dramas. I kept failing at it. I would write some of the book, and some of it worked, and a lot of it didn't. And so at times, I was discouraged, thinking that either, A, it was a bad idea, or, B, it was a good idea and I didn't have the chops to carry it out. But I kept coming back to it 'cause I couldn't leave it behind. And then later on, a couple of decades down the road - you know, I live mostly in California - I started to go back to Rhode Island, where a lot of the first book is set, and I fell in love with the place again, and I felt that I could write it, perhaps in a better and more mature way than I could have done 20 years earlier.

SIMON: Did you feel a kinship with Danny?

WINSLOW: I think so. You know, I grew up with a lot of Danny'. I played pond hockey with them. I went to the beaches with them, you know, to the bars and restaurants and all kinds of things. So it's funny how little self-awareness you can have. The second volume of this book, "City Of Dreams," is basically Danny wandering the country trying to find a place to set his feet. I was deep into writing the third book before I looked back on the second book and realized how connected I was to Danny in that regard. You know, I left Rhode Island when I was 17 and spent decades wandering not only the country but the world, doing various kinds of jobs trying to make a living, trying without a notable degree of success to become a writer and finally kind of made that happen and found a place, if you will, to set my feet.

SIMON: You mentioned all the jobs you had. You were a private eye in Times Square.

WINSLOW: Yes, sir.

SIMON: Is that as exciting as it sounds, or is it a lot of keyhole peeping?

WINSLOW: (Laughter) Not too much keyhole peeping, thank God. You know, I didn't do what they call matrimonial work. But, no, it was not romantic at all. I was basically what is known as a street rat. And so I started that by investigating embezzlement and thefts in cinemas and legit movie theaters on Times Square - there were a few in those days - and then graduated, if you want to call it that, to being a troll. I would walk around Times Square trying to get mugged, and there were big tough guys, which I am not, behind me jumping in like riders at the rodeo and then eventually chasing runaways and trying to get to them before the pimps did.

SIMON: By the way, not that I'm interested in doing this, how do you arrange to get mugged?

WINSLOW: (Laughter) Well, for one thing, you arrange to be 5'6 and 130 pounds. That helps. And then you walk around looking like you don't know where you're going, like you're a tourist, with a wallet prominently in your back pants pocket.

SIMON: Wow. Sounds like it was indispensable to your literature.

WINSLOW: In some ways. You know, I mean, I think that being a PI, and then later I did it out in California, out here, on a much higher kind of level. But it got me in that world. I got to know cops and crooks and street people and lawyers and judges and courtrooms and all of that. But I think the most important influence it had on my work was in terms of investigation itself. I learned how to do research. I learned how to interview people. And the same skills that I would have used as an investigator are the skills that I brought to researching the novels.

SIMON: All of this steers us to asking about your goodbye. The acknowledgments you write include hundreds of people, parents...

WINSLOW: Yes.

SIMON: ...readers, old teachers...

WINSLOW: Sure.

SIMON: ...Even your agent.

WINSLOW: Especially my agent. Yeah.

SIMON: And as you say, goodbyes are hard. So why are you retiring?

WINSLOW: It's the confluence of two streams, if you will. One is that having finished this trilogy felt like an ending to me. It felt like, yeah, kind of my life's work. The second, though, major stream, and probably more important one, is that I just think that we're at a time in this country of crisis and a time where democracy is under a severe threat. And I think that the response to that needs to be more immediate than one can do in a novel, you know? You know, I'm not young. I'm 70. And I think whatever energies and time I have are better spent in that fight.

SIMON: Don Winslow, his new and insists his last novel, "City In Ruins." Thanks so much for being with us, and thanks for everything.

WINSLOW: Thank you very much. That's gracious of you to say.

Rebel wilson says sacha baron cohen is the “a**hole” that allegedly tried to stop her writing about him in memoir.

The Aussie actress had earlier claimed that an unnamed star had hired "a crisis PR manager and lawyers" to "threaten" her over a chapter in her book, 'Rebel Rising.' A spokesperson for Baron Cohen says, "These demonstrably false claims are directly contradicted by extensive detailed evidence."

Rebel Wilson has revealed that her Grimsby co-star Sacha Baron Cohen is the previously unnamed Hollywood “asshole” that is allegedly attempting to stop her writing about him in her upcoming memoir, Rebel Rising .

Last week, in an Instagram post, Wilson revealed that she intended to dedicate a whole chapter in her book to “a massive asshole” she had previously worked with in Hollywood, although she didn’t reveal the person’s name, the project they worked on together or provide any further details.

“When I first came to Hollywood, people were like, yeah, ‘I have a no-asshole policy, [it] means like, yeah, I don’t work with assholes.’ I was like, ‘Oh yeah. I mean, that sounds sensible or logical,'” Wilson says in an Instagram video posted March 15 . “But then it really sunk in [what they, the older people in the industry, meant] because I worked with a massive asshole and yeah, now I definitely have a no-assholes policy.”

Wilson added, “The chapter on said asshole is chapter 23. That guy was a massive asshole.”

Wilson’s book, Rebel Rising , is set to roll out globally in hardcover, ebook and audio April 2. The book, published by Simon & Schuster, will track Wilson’s “unconventional journey” to finding success in Hollywood after growing up in Australia.

Over the weekend, Wilson sent an update on her social media, claimed that the star in question had hired a “crisis PR manager and lawyers” to “threaten” her in order to stop her writing about him.

“I wrote about an asshole in my book. Now, said asshole is trying to threaten me,” Wilson said in a now deleted Instagram Story reported by Us Weekly . “He’s hired a crisis PR manager and lawyers. He is trying to stop press coming out about my book. But the book WILL come out, and you will all know the truth.”

Wilson and Baron Cohen worked together on the 2016 comedy Grimsby . In the film, Wilson played the girlfriend of Baron Cohen’s character Nobby, an English football hooligan who becomes an elite spy. The film also starred Mark Strong, Penélope Cruz and Baron Cohen’s real life wife Isla Fisher.

Wilson has previously hinted at friction and disagreements over her role in Grimsby . In 2014, Australia’s The Courier-Mail newspaper reported on comments Wilson made to the radio show Kyle and Jackie O about her time working on the Louis Leterrier film. “Sacha is so outrageous,” Wilson said. “Every single day he’s like, ‘Rebel, can you just go naked in this scene?’ And I’m like, ‘No!’ Sacha and I have the same agent in America and I’m like, ‘Sacha, I’m going to call our agent Sharon and tell her how much you are harassing me.”

Wilson adds, “Every day he’s like, ‘Just go naked, it will be funny. Remember in Borat when I did that naked scene? It was hilarious.’ On the last day I thought I’d obviously won the argument, and he got a body double to do the naked scene.”

She continued, “Then in the last scene…he was like, ‘Rebel can you just stick your finger up my butt?’ And I went, ‘What do you mean Sacha? That’s not in the script.’ “And he’s like, ‘Look, I’ll just pull down my pants, you just stick your finger up my butt, it’ll be a really funny bit.'”

Bill Belichick planning to write book, nature of which still unknown: Sources

Bill Belichick is planning on writing a book, according to officials briefed on his plans.

The nature of the book is not yet fully known. In light of how he was represented in Apple TV’s recent Patriots documentary , his side of his legendary nearly quarter-century run would be of great interest. However, Belichick may just write about his views on leadership or a topic in that genre.

After nearly a quarter century as the Patriots coach, Belichick, 71, was a candidate for the Atlanta Falcons’ job that went to Raheem Morris.

While Belichick may eventually return to coaching, he is talking to networks about broadcasting jobs. In meetings, he has told executives he is disinclined to be on a weekly pregame set.

Why Bill Belichick, perhaps the greatest coach in NFL history, didn't land a job

A deal with ESPN, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and NFL Films is one media combination that may work out. Pat McAfee has also expressed public interest in having him on his program. McAfee has paid people, like Aaron Rodgers and Nick Saban, seven figures for weekly appearances in the past.

Apple TV’s recent documentary about the Patriots, “The Dynasty,” has received criticism because of how it portrayed Belichick, including from ex-players like Devin McCourty and Rodney Harrison. New England owner Robert Kraft expressed disapproval of the series for not focusing enough on the winning.

While Kraft didn’t point it out, many reviews have mentioned that Belichick failed to receive the credit for being the coach of the incredible run that included six Super Bowls.

Belichick and the Patriots’ dynasty have already been chronicled in many books. Most notably, Ian O’Connor’s New York Times best-seller, “Belichick,” authoritatively detailed the legendary coach’s life. Belichick did not participate with O’Connor on the book.

Val McDermid and Douglas Stuart were among many writers to express outrage after Creative Scotland turned down the literary festival funding application

Val McDermid, Douglas Stuart and Andrew O’Hagan are among the Scottish authors criticising the cancellation of Glasgow literary festival Aye Write after its funding application was turned down by Creative Scotland.

McDermid said it was “profoundly depressing” that Glasgow “cannot sustain a book festival”, while Stuart called it “unacceptable”. O’Hagan said that the cancellation is “savage and it shouldn’t be happening”.

On Thursday, Glasgow Life, a council-funded charity, announced that its funding application for Aye Write and Wee Write – a festival for children and young people – was unsuccessful. “Both events are dependent on external funding that is not guaranteed from year to year,” said the charity.

Scottish-American author Stuart, who won the Booker prize in 2020 for his debut novel Shuggie Bain, said there is “righteous outrage” about the festival’s cancellation in a post on X . “I have watched in horror, as Scotland has haggled over funding for the arts, has closed her libraries, and now has allowed the cancellation of a major literary festival in her largest city.”

Stuart added that he has “sat through many interviews” in the past year about the “surge” of Irish writing, and that Ireland “understands that culture, people, and literature are her strength and they fund it like they mean it”.

Former first minister Nicola Sturgeon said that the cancellation was “really bad news. I know money is tight but very much hope that a way is found to get [Aye Write] back on track,” she wrote on X . “Books, culture generally, are so vital to our wellbeing – and never more so than in the troubled times we live in today. Book festivals are opportunities to celebrate the wonder of literature and those who create it. We mustn’t lose that.”

Crime writer McDermid described the cancellation as “impoverishing our future” and “burning the seed corn” of the cultural future, reported the Sunday Post . “It’s a very sad day indeed that a city like Glasgow cannot sustain a book festival when it has such a proud history of producing the most amazing writers.”

The cancellation of Aye Write comes as many cultural festivals face financial pressures. In 2022, Ways With Words, which ran literary festivals in the Lake District, Suffolk and Devon, cancelled its festival , stating that it was not “currently viable” because of cost of living concerns. In 2023, cultural organisation Bristol Ideas announced it would close in May this year after 30 years of operation. A statement said that the organisation had “not been immune to the difficulties facing the cultural sector”.

Scottish writer Damian Barr said that the cancellation of Aye Write is “so wrong”. The festival “is one of Scotland’s biggest and most beloved book festivals – it is vital for readers and writers across Scotland and beyond”.

Glasgow Life, which had funded Aye Write since it began in 2005, had applied for £77,500 of funding from Creative Scotland . At last year’s festival, around 175 authors appeared in more than 120 events across 10 days.

Scottish crime novelist Chris Brookmyre said that he is “really disappointed” about Aye Write’s cancellation. “It has been one of the biggest fixtures on Scotland’s cultural calendar for well over a decade, and it always meant a lot to me to take part in my home town book festival.”

Glasgow Life said that while the festivals are not going ahead, it will organise some pop-up Aye Write events in 2024 and develop its funding application for 2025, which “if successful, means a return for the festivals in May next year”.

Stuart added that “Aye Write is not just about one city or one festival, it’s about a nation’s pride in her art. It’s about working class access to literature – and let’s not be coy here: working class people are crucial to Scottish literature. Get a haud of yersels. And let Glasgow be great.”
