Ealing Book Festival logo

Ealing has a long and rich literary history. Many celebrated authors have had connections to the area and to this day Ealing remains home to a large community of writers.

At the same time, the London Borough of Ealing is the fourth most populous London borough yet it hasn’t had a literary festival to call its own since 2009.

Ealing Book Festival grew out of a desire to establish an annual celebration of literature that enables authors - both from across the borough and elsewhere - to showcase and discuss their work, whilst allowing audiences of all ages to connect with fellow book lovers and explore Ealing’s vibrant literary scene.

The festival will take place at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery between Thursday 11th and Sunday 14th April 2024.

We hope to work with a diverse range of partners, community groups and schools to share stories and grow interest in books and literature across Ealing and West London.

The team behind Ealing Book Festival is highly-experienced and well connected in the publishing industry. We are also grateful for the support of our authors, sponsors, volunteers and the wider Ealing community.

We are excited about writing the next chapter in Ealing's literary history.

On the trail of greater wellbeing

  • 16 February 2022

“Everyday life can be so demanding for so many of us. I’ve always loved outdoor games and writing, so to find a way to combine to them to inject some fun and play seems natural,” said the woman behind a creative new project promoting wellbeing.

The Ealing Writing Trail is due come into to being this spring and will include a scavenger hunt giving everyone an imaginative way to explore Ealing – whatever the age, whatever the weather. QR codes for smartphones will be placed strategically in and around Ealing Broadway, with an interactive and downloadable map for participants to use and navigate with.

Along the trail, people will seek and find quotes by British writers, musicians and artists, both past and present, that celebrate the relationship between creativity and wellbeing; as well as activity prompts to make people think or help them get creative; and also a clue to a wider puzzle.

There will also be writing workshops taking place on certain dates along the trail, providing opportunities for people of all ages to boost their creativity and wellbeing through writing.

The project has been created and co-ordinated by Poonam Madar, who said: “I run writing workshops myself and I’ve seen how it attracts people from all walks of life, and especially those from the health sector. It is a great way for people to come together and enjoy writing in a therapeutic way.

“We’ve all had to social distance for so long but of course the need to connect with others never leaves us.

“Part of the inspiration for this trail is the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’, which is backed by the NHS. It promotes things like connectivity, staying active and learning – these are all the themes that I’m bringing to the writing trial.”

Over the previous year, Ealing Council’s Future Ealing Fund Crowdfunding Opportunity (FEF) has offered support and match funding to help the recovery of business, neighbourhoods and the local area and has seen a wealth of new community projects.

It is ‘all or nothing’ with the FEF, so Poonam is still looking for support from local people and businesses to reach her funding target of £21,000 by mid-March so it can benefit from a pledge from the council’s fund worth more than £8,000.

She explained: “Support from the FEF has been a great way of showcasing my project making it easier for people to see what I want to do and I even attended a webinar and got advice about how to get my ideas off the ground.”

“Ealing is a rich cultural hub with so many different things to offer,” Poonam added. “I want to also create something for writers to add to what we have here. I spent much of my childhood in Ealing and I also work in Ealing, so it feels personal.”

Local decisions ‘firmly in the hands of residents’

Councillor Jasbir Anand, cabinet member for thriving communities, said: “Through the FEF, we have made significant funding available for local projects which bring community together, improve our high streets, or create hubs for learning. Local people can also show their support for these community projects too by backing their crowdfunding campaigns.

“Ultimately, it is about helping to put decisions about how we invest in our communities firmly in the hands of residents.

“ A number of projects have already secured FEF funding and are now up and running and we will continue to support local communities with great ideas wherever possible.”

Chiswick Book Festival

Ealing Writers: Fiction and Poetry

Montage of covers of fiction books written by authors from Ealing, West London.

The Borough of Ealing is that part of west London which borders Chiswick and includes Acton, Hanwell, Northolt, Perivale and Southall. With the help of The Pitshanger Bookshop and Ealing Borough Archivist and author Jonathan Oates we’ve compiled a list of published writers who have lived, worked or been educated in the borough or have written books set in the area.

To avoid double-counting, we’ve excluded writers who live in the Chiswick W4 part of the Borough of Ealing: these appear on the Chiswick Writers pages. Where there’s information online about an author you’ll see that you can click on their name. If there’s someone we’ve missed, please let us know by emailing  [email protected] . This page lists authors of adult and children’s fiction, and poetry.  For non-fiction click here . Here’s our timeline of Ealing authors .

Read an Interview with Chantal about Writing Therapy

featured in the newsletter of the Santa Barbara chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.

What Are Therapeutic Writing Groups?

The aim of the therapeutic writing group is to help members foster insight and self-awareness as well as to generate support from others through the process of writing.

The writing process allows unknown or repressed material to emerge into the conscious mind. That is why we begin the writing periods with journaling prompts, which serve as a tool to prod the unconscious. This process is further supported by the technique of stream-of-consciousness writing, which serves to circumvent our natural tendency to censor our thoughts and feelings. Engaging with oneself on the page in this way can help bring about new insights and meaning–old stories are often told in new ways.

The Therapeutic Writing Group Environment

The therapeutic writing group environment, protected by principles of confidentiality and non-judgement, creates a uniquely safe space for vulnerable, hidden/edited material to find expression. Paying attention to what the writing reveals and then further validating and processing it within the group has a powerfully beneficial therapeutic effect.

An added benefit of group therapy is that people can discover that there is a universal quality to our most vulnerable and private perceptions and impulses. This insight can reduce a sense of isolation, shame, anxiety, and depression; it fosters a deeper sense of connection with others as well as, ultimately, with oneself.

Do I Need Experience as a Writer/Creative Writer?

No experience needed. The idea is to use writing as a tool to facilitate self-awareness, it’s not intended to be performative. The group avoids critique and pays no attention to grammar, spelling or structure. In fact, the intention is to leave all that behind.

How Do I Know That The Therapeutic Writing Group is Right for Me?

The group is suitable for individuals who wish to know themselves more deeply through the process of writing therapeutically. In order to determine whether the group is an appropriate fit and to learn more about individual needs and expectations, I meet with each potential participant before admitting them to the group.

‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold

P ODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents throughout Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left without heating when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

Heating issues have affected residents in the Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as people in the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and more.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, the authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in heating bills paid by residents, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. According to investigators, the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the heating payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure in Russia which have been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.

Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.

In St. Petersburg, residents regularly complain about extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks, with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.

In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated communication systems.

In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, residents affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she added.

Want to talk about writing? This long-running Seattle group has you covered

This piece is from our latest This City Block series, which highlights stories from Ballard.

At 34 years and counting, the It’s About Time Writers’ Reading Series makes a convincing claim to the title of Seattle’s longest-running reading series, where writers share their work with other writers. Series facilitator Peggy Sturdivant says the inclusivity of the reading series is the secret of its success.

“You don’t have to be published,” Sturdivant says. “You could just be anyone hanging out in the library, and you can do the open mic and share your work.”

It’s About Time offers three-minute slots to any writer, no matter their level of experience, and every month an established author offers a 20-minute craft lecture.

This City Block: A deep dive into Ballard

Inspired in part by the University of Washington’s legendary Castalia poetry series, It’s About Time was founded in 1990 by local author Esther Altshul Helfgott as an extension of her writing classes. In the first meetings at the Ravenna-Bryant Senior Center “we had a great turnout,” Helfgott recalls. “It was a great community, so I just continued with it.”

For the first half of the series’ existence, It’s About Time restlessly bounced around bookstores and libraries in Seattle’s North End, including Third Place Books Ravenna and SPL’s University Branch.

As the series opened up to the public, Helfgott made sure It’s About Time was as warm and welcoming as possible. “It’s scary to get up there in front of a group when you’ve never read, especially for someone who’s never thought of herself or himself as a writer,” she says. It was important to her that “somebody who’s 100 years old can come and read, and so can somebody who’s 10 or 12.”

Helfgott’s message, that “anybody can write,” helped the series expand in popularity even as it searched for a permanent home, and in 2007, it found one: the Ballard branch of the Seattle Public Library.

“Ballard was a good home for us,” Helfgott says. “A lot of people from Ballard, it turned out, were writers.”

In 2011, Helfgott was preparing to retire and trying to find a good steward to lead the series forward. Sturdivant was one of those Ballard-based writers, a poet who wrote about neighborhood events for the Ballard News Tribune and was heavily invested in the community.

“I looked for somebody I thought was stable enough in the community who had roots here and was not going to flee,” she says. “And when I met Peggy, I knew that she would have her own way of doing the series, but she would keep it going in terms of longevity.”

Helfgott, it turns out, chose wisely. Sturdivant’s pride in the series practically resonates on a cellular level. She keeps lists of readers and recalls milestones including “when [current Seattle Civic Poet] Shin Yu Pai first read and had her baby that night” and when Seattle writer Allison Green read from her book about Northwest novelist and poet Richard Brautigan “the night her dad died.”

Sturdivant has seen some of the most beloved names in Washington state literature read — poets including Susan Rich, Ebo Barton, Bill Carty, and former state Poet Laureate Kathleen Flenniken, as well as novelists including Erica Bauermeister, E. Lily Yu and Kathleen Alcalá. The writing group’s stage also serves as a living link between contemporary writers and prominent Seattle authors and It’s About Time all-stars who have since died, including Crysta Casey and Kim-An Lieberman.

But while some of Seattle’s best-known writers have read at It’s About Time, it’s those first-time writers who keep the series as vibrant as it was when Helfgott was first starting out — old and young, housed and unhoused, trained and untrained. As long as you are supportive of other writers, It’s About Time saves a space onstage for you, and provides a room full of writers eager to listen to what you have to say.

Former Seattle writer Donna Miscolta, who recently moved to Spain, says she misses Seattle’s writing community, and she calls It’s About Time “one of the friendliest and most fun series” Seattle has to offer. “I remember being able to try out early work that would eventually become part of my third book, ‘Living Color: Angie Rubio Stories.’ Whether the audience was small or large, it was always attentive and supportive.”

During the pandemic, the series moved online, which helped it become a hub for immunocompromised writers. Jesse Minkert, who was previously a board member of the long-running Red Sky Poetry Theater, says the online readings “were essentially my only contact with the literary community” during the pandemic.

“I depend on this outlet to keep connected. The city is full of great writers, and some are like me, dealing with age, medical conditions and disabilities,” Minkert wrote in an email. “Poetry online is, to my mind, essential to people like us.”

The online component has also allowed the series to be archived, in the form of a YouTube channel . “Sometimes there’s just nights that are magic when synergy happens between the readers,” Sturdivant says. She recalls one evening when a Vietnam War-era memoir piece early in the program inspired later readers to solemnly recall their draft numbers from memory before sharing their work, in a spontaneous and moving reminder of how the war forever marked a generation. Before the pandemic, moments like that were ephemeral, but “having it be recorded and then on YouTube for the last couple of years has kind of been a dream come true.”

But like any community-minded creative endeavor, It’s About Time has faced plenty of challenges, and that includes whether or not it can return to the library now that it is experimenting with a hybrid in-person and online model. Additionally, Sturdivant says that as SPL faces a citywide hiring freeze , library staff have expressed some uncertainty about whether Ballard’s library, which has been It’s About Time’s home for 17 years, will continue to host the series in the future.

Sturdivant says management at SPL’s Ballard branch has been calling for the series to return to physical meetings but that staff at the Ballard branch are “talking about [budget] cuts and saying they don’t even know if they’re going to be open on Thursday nights.” The Ballard branch is currently open from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Thursdays.

“It seemed like they wanted us to be in person, but then they’re saying, ‘We don’t know if you’re going to be able to be in person anymore,’” Sturdivant says. “We cost them almost nothing, offer a program unlike any other that’s offered at any branch. Why wouldn’t they want to claim us?”

SPL’s head of communications Laura Gentry said over email that as the city struggles with budget deficits, “we are evaluating a wide array of potential options to balance our budget, and are still determining the best course of action.”

“The library is unaware of an existing agreement to host [It’s About Time] at the Ballard Branch in perpetuity,” Gentry said, explaining that the branch did sign a memorandum of agreement with the group during the pandemic that stated library staff would help provide technical support to host the program online for two years, but that MOA has since expired.

“Despite lack of a current MOA in place, the Ballard Branch continues to host and support this program” and “more online and in-person events are being planned this year,” Gentry said, adding, “At this time … there are no changes planned for this particular program.”

In 2019, Seattle voters overwhelmingly renewed a library levy that funded 10,000 additional open hours per year at library branches for seven years. When asked how the levy’s promises might interact with potential cuts in library hours, Gentry said SPL leadership will make decisions “within the context of ensuring responsible use of levy dollars to best provide library services.”

Mayor Bruce Harrell will present his budget in September and the City Council will vote on a final budget in November. Karissa Braxton, senior communications adviser for Harrell, says that while the mayor’s office understands “how important it is to Seattle residents that we ensure quality, reliable, world-class library services for readers and visitors across our 27 locations,” she does not have any “additional news to share about changes to funding, staffing, or programming of libraries until the budget process is complete.”

For now, Sturdivant says the library is working with her to keep the series going, and after years of online readings, the series is “transitioning back to in-person as of July 11, 2024, with hopes of establishing a hybrid, or at least livestreaming, option in the future.”

For Sturdivant, the most important thing is providing “the most welcoming place to ever read for the first time,” and ensuring that for all readers, “it’s going to be 100% supportive.”

“Every month is different,” she says. “But there’s never been a bad one.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
