If you fill a temporary role with a company, you may have to reapply for the job once the company decides to hire a permanent employee. This practice is known as the temp-to-hire process. Other reasons you may have to reapply for your current job is because of a merger, acquisition or reorganization. Use your knowledge about the company to put you above other potential applicants. If you're well-liked in the organization and mention the relationships you've formed. The advantage you have over outside applicants is that you know the organizational culture and you won't have the extra ramp-up time that an outside applicant would have. Add that you collaborate well with employees in other departments, if that is part of your job. Be positive and don't sound resentful that you have to reapply for a job you are already doing well.

I am personally committed to the organization's global mission statement and core values. I have enjoyed the emphasis on teamwork. I particularly like working collaboratively with marketing, public relations and sales when preparing the company's monthly electronic newsletter.

Achievements

If you made any significant accomplishments in your current role, by all means, list them in a third paragraph. Highlight achievements directly related to the priority tasks of the position you seek. For instance, if the job announcement states that the company seeks an innovative self-starter, describe yourself that way in your application.

Remember to take everything one step at a time and review some helpful tips for writing a polished and engaging job application letter:

Tailor the application letter to each job. Your letter should address key points in the job description from the listing, as well as how you can apply your knowledge and experience to the position. You want to emphasize why you are the best candidate for this specific job.

Don’t copy information straight from your resume. Your resume is meant to act as a formal record of your professional experience, education, and accomplishments. The job application letter is where you highlight a few particular details from your resume, and use them to demonstrate how your experience can apply to the job.

Follow the business letter format. These letters have very strict formatting rules, to ensure that they appear as professional to hiring managers. A poorly formatted letter could prevent employers from taking your application seriously.

Proofread. Hiring managers will definitely overlook letters riddled with proofreading mistakes. Read your letter several times over to fix any grammar, punctuation, or spelling errors. You could ask someone else to look over it afterwards or run it through any number of online grammar check programs.

Decide on printing and mailing your letter or sending it in an email. An application letter sent through email requires a subject line that details your purpose for writing— consider “[job title], [your name].” The placement of your contact information is also different depending on the medium . In a hard copy, this goes at the top of your letter, as a header. In an email, it goes below your signature.

A cover letter normally is attached with a resume for a specific job opening, whereas a job application letter can be submitted independently. As already stated, a job application letter can also be known as a cover letter. Format wise, there are a lot of similarities.

However, a job application letter can also be more detailed than a cover a letter. Usually a cover letter acts a quick introduction to a resume when a candidate applies for a specific job opening.

Meanwhile, you can submit a job application letter to a company even if there are no job openings. In this case, you would provide more detail about yourself and your qualifications. Due to this, job application letters tend to be a little longer than the average cover letter.

Now that we’ve gone through the basic formatting for a job application letter and a few examples of what one might look like, how can we condense all that information into digestible pieces?

Refer to these lists of “dos” and “don’ts” to help you through your drafting process:

Explain what you can bring to the company. Consider: how is your experience relevant to what the hiring manager is looking for?

Discuss your skills. Pick out a few skills listed in your resume and describe how you have utilized them in the workplace.

Give specific examples to support your experience. Is there a major project you worked on at your last job ? Did you accomplish something significant in your previous position? Including examples of these things in your letter will add new, specific content to your application and make you more interesting.

Edit your letter thoroughly. Read your letter a couple times, pass it off to someone to look over, run it through an online grammar check. Make sure it’s free of any errors.

Don’t focus on what the job can do for you. While it might seem nice to write that a job is your dream job or that you’ve always wanted to work with a company, it can read as vague flattery. Remember, this letter is about your qualifications.

Don’t list your current or previous job description. Your education and work experience certainly have value, but don’t just list your degrees and places you’ve worked at. Explained what you learned from those experiences and how they’ve made you a strong employee.

Don’t paste directly from your resume. A job application letter is meant to add to your value as a candidate, not just reiterate the same information repeatedly. Use your resume as a guide , but expand on especially relevant details.

Don’t submit an unedited letter. Before an employer ever meets you, they see your application and your job application letter. You don’t want grammar errors and misspelled words to make a bad first impression, so make sure to edit your draft multiple times.

Armed with these tips, guidelines, and examples, you’ll be able to draft your job application letter more confidently and send them off to potential employers knowing that you’re one step closer to employment.

Get off to a direct start.  In your first paragraph, explain why you are writing. Mention the job title and company name, and where you found the job listing. While you can also briefly mention why you are a strong candidate, this section should be short and to the point.

Offer something different than what's in your resume. You can make your language a bit more personal than in your resume bullet points, and you can tell a narrative about your work experience and career.

Application letters typically accompany resumes, so your letter should showcase information that your resume doesn't.

Make a good case.  Your first goal with this letter is to progress to the next step: an interview. Your overarching goal, of course, is to get a job offer. Use your application letter to further both causes. Offer details about your experience and background that show why you are a good candidate. How have other jobs prepared you for the position? What would you bring to the position, and to the company? Use this space to  emphasize your strengths .

Close with all the important details.  Include a thank you at the end of your letter. You can also share your contact information and mention how you will follow up.

Iowa Workforce Development is continuously looking for ways to help Iowans renter the workforce as quickly as possible and gain the skillsets they need to be successful. Several state and federal programs are available to help Iowans take this critical step.

Studies completed by the U.S. Department of Labor found that people who received reemployment services returned to work earlier than people who did not receive services.

Reemployment Programs

Reemployment case management (rcm) program.

This program, which launched in January 2022, represents a heightened focus by Iowa Workforce Development on getting unemployed Iowans back to work as quickly as possible. Simply put, RCM provides enhanced services to unemployment claimants at the beginning of the claims process and assists them in finding jobs more quickly, including by helping match their skills with the skills need by local companies with vacant jobs.

Claimants are also assisted by new technology that’s being added to Iowa’s existing Iowa WORKS  system, thereby making it easier to match an unemployment claimant’s work history with the skills in demand at Iowa companies with open jobs.

Along with the increased assistance, most unemployment benefits claimants now must take part in four “reemployment activities” per week (instead of two per week) to maintain their claims. At least three of these must involve applications for jobs . Visit the FAQ page below for more information.

FAQ: Reemployment Case Management (RCM) Program

Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment (RESEA)

The Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessment (RESEA) program looks at a variety of factors such as occupation, industry, education, length of employment, wages, etc. Participants are selected within the first five paid weeks of their claim.

RESEA is designed to assure that you are registered for work and to provide customized reemployment services.  If selected, participation is mandatory and is a condition of eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits. If you do not participate, it could result in a denial of benefits.

You will receive a letter informing you where to report and what documents to bring. You must contact your RESEA Advisor prior to your scheduled appointment if you are unable to attend.  Appointments may be rescheduled for justifiable cause.

This program is an overall eligibility assessment review of your unemployment insurance claim. You meet one-on-one with a RESEA Advisor to:

  • Discuss benefits and requirements of the RESEA program including how non-participation can affect your unemployment insurance benefits
  • Assess your unemployment insurance eligibility and address any possible issues
  • Review your work searches and discuss your work search process
  • Provide you with Labor Market Information (LMI)
  • Review your resume and provide feedback                           
  • Review your registration in Iowa WORKS to ensure that it is properly completed
  • Schedule you for an Iowa WORKS Center Orientation workshop
  • Schedule you for one additional workshop of your choice to be completed within 30 calendar days of RESEA assessment
  • Refer you to additional reemployment services/activities such as: resume writing, Future Ready Iowa, WIOA, ex-offenders services, etc. when employment barriers exist
  • Develop or revise Initial Service Plan (ISP) that will include work search activities, accessing services provided through IowaWORKS and self-service tools

Based on the results of the review, selected participants will receive a letter outlining which program they have been selected to participate in. The letter will also include what office to report to and what documents need to be brought. Possible programs include:

  • Reemployment Orientation Workshop
  • Reemployment Eligibility Assessment
  • Emergency Unemployment Compensation Audit
  • National Career Readiness Certificate Testing

These programs are designed to provide individuals with customized reemployment services that may include the following:

  • Development of an employment plan including, guidance for completing online applications, resume and cover letter writing assistance and interview preparation
  • Help developing effective networking
  • Skills assessments
  • Review Labor Market Information to identify employment needs in the community and career possibilities
  • Referrals to additional training and educational programs

 Contact your local  Iowa WORKS Office  for additional information.

Training Extension Benefits

If you are attending school or a training course, you may apply for Training Extension Benefits (TEB) to receive an additional 26 weeks of benefits. TEB is available if you:

  • Meet the eligibility requirements for unemployment insurance benefits
  • Voluntarily separated from a full-time position in a declining occupation
  • Involuntarily separated from a full-time position due to a permanent reduction of operations at the last place of employment

In addition to the above requirements, the school or training course must be one of the following:

  • High demand occupation as defined by IWD
  • High-tech occupation or training approved under the Workforce Investment and Opportunity Act (WIOA)

To apply, the claimant must:

  • Supply the name of the school, type of training, class schedule and the beginning and ending dates of training. 
  • Submit an application for TEB within 30 days of the last week you receive benefits. A claimant can apply at any time for TEB while claiming benefits; applying earlier is recommended.

​TEB is only payable after all other unemployment benefits are exhausted. The  TEB application can be found at this link .

The TEB application may be submitted in a variety of ways.

  • Take the application and class schedule to a local  Iowa WORKS   Center   (preferred method).
  • Fax the application and class schedule to 515-242-0444.
  • Mail the application and class schedule to: UI Service Center-DAT P O Box 10332 Des Moines IA 50306-0332

If the claimant stops training for any reason, they must notify IWD and stop filing their weekly claim.

Department Approved Training

If you are attending school or a training course, you may request to waive the work search requirement for each semester of school you attend. You should submit an application for  Department Approved Training (DAT)  to IWD with the following information:

  • Name of the school
  • Type of training
  • Class schedule
  • Beginning and ending dates of training

The DAT application may be submitted in a variety of ways:

  • Take the application and class schedule to a local  Iowa WORKS  Center  (which is the preferred method).

You will receive a decision in the mail approving or denying your request for DAT. The decision will include appeal rights. If you are approved for DAT, even though the work search requirement is waived, you must continue to be able and available to attend school. You must also file a weekly claim to receive payment while you are in school. If training stops for any reason, you must notify IWD and begin making work search contacts immediately. To be eligible for a continuing DAT each semester, you will need to submit a new application for DAT including your schedule and prior semester’s grades so we can determine your progress.

Voluntary Shared Work

The Voluntary Shared Work (VSW) program offers an alternative to layoffs of five or more workers and is an effective tool for Iowa businesses experiencing a decline in regular business activity. Under VSW, work reductions are shared by reducing employees’ work hours and Unemployment Insurance (UI) partially replaces lost earnings. By avoiding layoffs, employees stay connected to their jobs and employers maintain their skilled workforce for when business improves.

Assists and collaborates with the Contracting Officer's Representative and performs management functions supporting formation, implementation, and administration of contracts in their portfolio. Makes purchase commitments of up to USD $25,000 with government purchase card. 

Qualifications and Evaluations

EXPERIENCE:  Three (3) years of experience in procuring a wide variety of products and services, administering terms and conditions of contracts, negotiating and awarding contracts, and contract modifications and monitoring contractors' performance is required.

JOB KNOWLEDGE: Working knowledge of local business practices, what goods and services are available locally, and pricing schemes is required. 

EDUCATION:   University degree in business administration, engineering, math, project management, information technology, or related major required. 

LANGUAGE:  Fluent speaking, reading, and writing proficiency in English.

Benefits and Other Info
