This article is about the real world.

The Complete Book 2 Collection 's cover features Aang in the Avatar State in the background, hovering over the other members of Team Avatar .

Book Two: Earth ( 土 ) is the title of the second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender , created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko , and the sequel to Book One: Water . The title refers to the Avatar Cycle : water, earth , fire, and air, and the story of Aang learning earthbending under the tutelage of Toph Beifong is a primary focus during this season.

The season began on March 17, 2006, with the airing of " The Avatar State ", and ended on December 1 of the same year with " The Guru " and " The Crossroads of Destiny ", both episodes airing on the same date. It was followed by Book Three: Fire , the third and final season.

In the iTunes and Netflix US release of Book Two, the episodes " The Serpent's Pass " and " The Drill " are combined into one episode titled "The Secret of the Fire Nation". Netflix US also combined " The Guru " and " The Crossroads of Destiny " into one episode, however, the title is simply displayed as "The Guru / The Crossroads of Destiny", rather than creating a new title.

The live-action version of Aang meditating in Avatar: The Last Airbender

Aang and his friends are on a quest to stop the Fire Nation in the first season of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender . But there’s plenty more to the story than just the first season, which was released on Netflix on Thursday. In fact, if the animated original series is anything to go by, there should be at least two more seasons in Aang’s journey .

And Netflix has confirmed that suspicion. The streamer has made its plans for Avatar’s future official, so here’s everything we know about the live-action Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2.

Is Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 happening?

On March 6, just a few weeks after the show’s debut, Netflix announced that Avatar: The Last Airbender is moving forward with not just one, but two more seasons. This means that the show should be able to complete the entire run of the original series, which also ran three seasons.

Albert Kim told Entertainment Weekly that the live-action version altered the story slightly in order to allow some space between seasons 1 and 2, since the young actors will age quickly and noticeably in between filming. With planning like that, it’s clear that Kim at least has already thinking about the rest of the show from day one.

When would Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 release?

With Netflix’s renewal coming so quickly, it’s possible that the cast and crew hop right back to work and get the show’s next season done quickly. While there’s still only a slim possibility that the show could come back right away, with a new season debuting in 2025, it’s much more likely that we’d be waiting until 2026 to see Aang and the gang’s story continue. The good news is that it won’t take nearly as long as it did for the first season to go from announcement to debut, especially considering that the cast could quickly age out of their roles — just like the kids from Stranger Things .

What will season 2 of Netflix’s Avatar be about?

The first season of the live-action show pretty closely follows the first season of the animated series, so it’s a good guess that we’ll probably get a pretty faithful adaptation of season 2 next time around. The one major change made by the creative team of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender was to add more Azula into season 1, which could mean that she also has an increased role in season 2, but we won’t know that for sure until the new season arrives.

But one thing is clear. There will be more of a time difference between season 1 and season 2 of the Netflix ATLA than the original show. Speaking to Polygon, showrunner Albert Kim says that the writing team went into season 1 fully knowing that any future seasons would have more time elapsed between, and the actors would get noticeably older. So, team accommodated a possible time skip between seasons while working on season 1.

“We wanted to account for the fact that Aang will have grown a little more than he would have in the original show,” he explains. “So one of the things that I know that fans are already noticing in season 1 is: Aang does not really do much waterbending, if at all in season 1. Because we actually wanted to, for one thing, slow down his bending education, [and] it gives us a little more time to do that. And we knew we would have more time.”

Kim also says that the next two seasons of the show present a different challenge than the first season. For one, the gaang bounces all over the map. But for another, the episodes are way more serialized than the cartoon.

“It’s both easier and harder to adapt, because there is a throughline but it means that every story kind of counts,” he says. “As opposed to season 1, where we had to leave some certain stories out and certain adventures and episodes out. But it did not necessarily disrupt the overall arc of the season because they were so self contained.”

So unlike season 1, which had a lot of shuffling of plotlines and characters, season 2 might be more by-the-book.

Who might join the cast for season 2?

The first and last answer here is really all that matters: Who is Netflix going to find to play Toph? The fan-favorite character will be season 2’s big addition, and the news of her casting is likely to be the most important pre-release information we find out, other than the season’s release date of course.

Should I watch the animated Last Airbender and Legend of Korra in the meantime?

Absolutely. Whether you liked season 1 of the live-action show or not, the animated version is quite a bit better and a whole lot more fun , so you should check it out if you haven’t yet — or revisit it if it’s been a few years. Legend of Korra is also great, if you’re still hungry for more Avatar action before season 2 arrives.

Does Netflix have any other live-action adaptations that are worth my time?

Live-action adaptations of animated series aren’t easy to pull off, but One Piece is arguably the best Netflix has done so far . The series can’t quite match the fun of the animated series, and like ATLA , it excises some of the most fun elements of the story , like the quiet moments of the crew getting to know each other better . But, despite those flaws, One Piece is still pretty good and definitely worth a watch.

Netflix's 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Season 2: Everything We Know

Here are the chances whether we'll see Toph in live-action.

Ian Ousley as Sokka, Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara in season 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender

After years of speculation, Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender ( ATLA ) has finally arrived to an understandably mixed response. For those who were not lucky enough watch the original animated series premiered on Nickelodeon in 2005, the superior Avatar franchise takes place in a magical world, heavily influenced by Asian and Indigenous cultures , where certain people can control the elements. Water-, earth-, fire-, and air-benders (and non-benders) used to live in harmony as four civilizations, until the Fire Nation began its quest for world domination. The Avatar, a spiritual being who can master all four elements, was meant to keep the world in balance, but he disappeared at the start of the war. Fast-forward 100 years, and Water Tribe teens Katara and Sokka discover the new Avatar, a child named Aang, who is the last living air-bender (hence the show's title).

It's a tall order to adapt a universally-beloved series considered one of the best TV shows of all time , and have it feel like anything more than a money grab, but Netflix's Avatar focuses on drawing in new audiences with the charming performances of the rising stars who make up the young cast. (There's also several Easter eggs that nod to eliminated storylines from the original show.) The live-action ATLA does feel rushed, due to condensing 20 animated episodes into just eight, but it still does a great job setting up the arcs of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko. (The animated series lasted for three seasons.) By the end of season 1, many fans were left wondering whether this remake would get the chance to bring Books 2 and 3 to life. Read on to learn everything we know about Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2.

Katara (Kiawentiio), Aang (Gordon Cormier), and Sokka (Ian Ousley) learn to fight as a team in season 1 of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender.'

Katara (Kiawentiio), Aang (Gordon Cormier), and Sokka (Ian Ousley) learn to fight as a team in season 1 of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender.'

What happened at the end of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' season 1?

By season 1's final episodes, Aang, Katara, and Sokka have made it to the Northern Water Tribe in search of a water-bending master to teach Aang and Katara. However, the Fire Nation is on their tail, with Prince Zuko seeking to capture Aang. Meanwhile Admiral Zhao is planning to destroy the last Water Tribe stronghold and eliminate water-bending from the world for good. By the end of the fighting, Aang was able to channel the spirit of the ocean and wipe out the entire Fire Nation fleet, while Zuko and his Uncle Iroh turned against Zhao, not wanting to upset the natural order of the universe by killing the moon spirit. (Even though Zhao succeeds, Princess Yue sacrifices herself to become the next moon spirit, and everything's put back into balance.) The devious acts of Admiral Zhao leave Zuko even more conflicted about the war; though capturing the Avatar is the only way to please his father, he recognizes that the Fire Nation may not be on the right side of the conflict.

Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka in season 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender

Water Tribe siblings Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) prepare for battle in season 1 of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender.'

After the fighting, Aang, Katara, and Sokka have earned the respect of the Northern Water Tribe, with the misogynistic water-bending master even giving Katara his blessing for her to serve as Aang's teacher. Aang still needs to find earth-bending and fire-bending teachers to master all four elements, and his next goal is to head back to Omashu to learn from King Bumi. However, we learn in the final moments that Omashu has fallen to a Fire Nation invasion, led by Zuko's terrifying sister, Princess Azula . This means Ba Sing Se is the last stronghold of the Earth Kingdom still standing, and Fire Lord Ozai still has big plans in his continued quest for world domination.

In a mid-credits scene, Ozai is advised that a major celestial event named Sozin's Comet is set to return "soon." The live-action series keeps the history of the comet vague, only revealing that it's named after Fire Lord Sozin, who began the great war with his attack on the Air Nomads over 100 years ago. As fans of the animated series know, this scene is actually a sneak peek for the series' endgame battle between Aang and Ozai.

Has 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' been renewed for season 2?

Yip yip! Netflix has announced that the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender has been renewed for both seasons 2 and 3, confirming that Netflix's ATLA will fully adapt the original arc of the Nickelodeon animated series. The streamer announced the happy news along with a sweet YouTube clip of Daniel Dae Lewis (who plays Fire Lord Ozai) pranking the show's central cast, threatening bad news before revealing the two-season pickup.

The early renewal is less of a surprise considering the fact that the series has not budged from the No. 1 spot on Netflix's Top 10 since its premiere. Per a press release from the streamer, season 1 is the top English TV show across the platform, with 41.1M views in just the first 11 days. Also, it reached No. 1 in 76 countries, while landing in the top 10 in 92.

Gordon Cormier as Aang in season 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender

Aang (Gordon Cormier) meditates to access the Spirit World, in season 1 of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender.'

When would 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' season 2 come out?

ATLA's possible return date depends on whether or not the creative team had started working on future episodes before last year's SAG-AFTRA strikes. Such a VFX heavy show has a long post-production timeline—season 1 finished filming in the summer of 2022, and the series didn't debut until February 2024. The quickest the show could return, provided they start filming ASAP, is the second half of 2025. Still, for epic shows like this, it's more likely that season 2 will get an early 2026 release date.

By the end of season 1, Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) and Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) are fugitives of the Fire Nation.

By the end of season 1, Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) and Uncle Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) are fugitives of the Fire Nation.

Ahead of the show's premiere, showrunner Albert Kim revealed during a January Entertainment Weekly interview that he had already considered one of the show's biggest challenges—what the outlet dubbed the Stranger Things problem: child actors aging faster than their characters. (Gordon Cormier signed on to play Aang at age 11 and is now 14, while Katara actress Kiawentiio has grown from age 14 to 17.) In an interview with the outlet, Kim explained that the live-action series was written to allow for a possible time jump between seasons 1 and 2.

"All three seasons of the animated series essentially take place in the course of one calendar year,” Kim said of the original show. “There was no way we could do that. So we had to design this first season, especially, to accommodate the possibility of some time elapsing between the first and the second season...because we couldn't know exactly how old our actors would be for the subsequent seasons. We definitely thought about that going into season 1 so that we can accommodate for puberty, adolescence, time passing —all of those fun things that happen to real-life human beings that don't happen to animated characters."

Which of the cast of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' will return for season 2?

All of the main actors within the ensemble cast are expected to reprise their roles, including: Gordon Cormier as Aang; Kiawentiio as Katara; Ian Ousley as Sokka; Dallas James Liu as Zuko; Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh; Elizabeth Yu as Azula; and Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai. Live-action fans will be happy to know that several of the supporting characters in season 1 return as the show goes on, including Suki (Maria Zhang); Mai (Thalia Tran); Ty Lee (Momona Tamada); Jet (Sebastian Amoruso); King Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar); Sai the Mechanist (Danny Pudi); Teo (Lucian-River Chauhan); and Commander Zhao (Ken Leung).

As for new actors, we'll have to wait and see who will join the series to play some highly-anticipated characters, particularly earth-bending master Toph.

Azula (Elizabeth Yu) shows her lightning-bending to Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) in season 1 of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender.'

Azula (Elizabeth Yu) shows her lightning-bending to Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) in season 1 of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender.'

What will 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' season 2 be about?

The eight-episode premiere season of Netflix's ATLA covered the entire first season of the original cartoon (also known as Book 1: Water), which focused on Aang's travels between the two Water Tribes. It's likely that season 2 will be an adaptation of Book 2: Earth, which sees Aang set out to master earth-bending and visit new corners of the world (most notably, Ba Sing Se). Meanwhile, Zuko and Uncle Iroh will be traveling the Earth Kingdom as fugitives from the Fire Nation, as Zuko tries to figure out his place in the world. Season 2 of the original show also served as the intros of Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee. While they've already shown up in the live-action series, season 2 will see them take a step up as the primary Big Bads hunting Aang.

The 10 Best Episodes In The Avatar Franchise

Both Last Airbender and Korra had several iconic episodes that became fan-favorites and defined their respective legacies.

Not many franchises manage to permeate the cultural zeitgeist as thoroughly as Avatar has done. Since The Last Airbender ’s debut in 2005, the world of bending has fascinated many fans and has remained relevant for almost two decades. It has since spawned live-action adaptations, best-selling prologue novels and The Legend of Korra , a sequel series featuring a brand-new Avatar, along with several new characters for fans to fall in love with all over again.

Both Last Airbender series and Korra , boasted several iconic episodes that ended up defining their respective legacies . The Last Airbender shone when its impressive character writing was highlighted, along with the strength of friendship bonds between the original Team Avatar. The Legend of Korra was by and large an expansion of the Avatar universe, and it was most entertaining when the differences between Aang’s era and Korra’s were focused on. Ironically, Korra’s era of peace gave rise to a variety of powerful benders determined to break the status quo.

10 Korra Brought Peace By Ushering The World Into A Spiritual Age

Legend of korra: book 4, chapter 13, “the last stand, part 2”, the strongest avatar: the last airbender characters, ranked.

The Legend of Korra ’s final episode was easily one of the most action-packed in the entire Avatar franchise . It featured Korra’s highly anticipated rematch with the genius metalbending general, Kuvira , and the dawn of a new era for the Avatar universe. The giant mecha tank that Team Avatar had to defend from Republic City was also the culmination of the technological advancement that had occurred in the 70 years that separated Aang’s era from Korra’s.

After one of the best choreographed bending battles with Korra, The Great Uniter’s final gambit involved an unstable spiritually charged weapon that threatened to destroy all of Republic City. Korra’s only solution to the problem involved tearing open a new spirit portal in the heart of the city. The new portal gave spirits a third avenue to access the mortal world, ushering in a new age of human and spiritual cooperation in perpetuity. The episode’s very ending also seemed lightly hinted at a relationship between Korra and Asami, which the creators Bryan Koneitzko and Micheal DiMartino went on to confirm. This marked the first canon LGBTQ relationship in the Avatar franchise.

9 Team Avatar Had Unique Adventures In Ba Sing Se

The last airbender: book 2, chapter 15, “the tales of ba sing se”.

The Tales of Ba Sing Se was one of the Avatar franchise’s most distinct episodes , as it featured a unique anthological story telling style. It showed the various members of Team Avatar in the wilds of Ba Sing Se and the hilarious adventures that ensued as they engaged with the city folk. Katara and Toph had their first true moment of connection, while Sokka and Aang had hilarious adventures on their own.

Even Zuko and Iroh weren’t left out, with Iroh’s tale becoming the episode's emotional crux. It was dedicated to the memory of Mako Iwamatsu, the original voice actor of Uncle Iroh. The Ba Sing Se setting allowed these familiar characters to express their personalities in entirely new dynamics. In the end, Momo’s own short tale confirmed that Appa was also within the city, the first marker of the sky bison’s safety in an excruciating long while.

8 Appa Had A Heartbreaking Journey Through The Earth Kingdom

The last airbender: book 2, episode 16, “appa’s lost days”.

Until this episode, Appa’s separation from Aang and the rest of Team Avatar had only been showcased from his human companion’s point of view. While it was agonizing witnessing Aang’s normally calm composure disturbed by his bison’s kidnapping, it was nothing compared to the full episode that documented Appa’s journey through the worst parts of the Earth Kingdom. After being sold to a Fire Nation circus, Appa was forced to perform tricks under inhumane conditions until he escaped.

Unable to release himself from his shackles, Appa had to defend himself from other wild animals while foraging for food with this handicap . His luck finally changed when he met the Kyoshi warriors, who managed to release the chains that plagued him. Unfortunately, it turned once again when he entered Ba Sing Se where Long Feng proceeded to imprison him as a means of manipulating Aang.

7 Aang Defended The North With A Display of Waterbending Might

The last airbender: book 1, the seige of the north, part 2, avatar: the last airbender - the 15 most inspiring quotes.

Admiral Zhao had proven himself to be a formidable foe indeed throughout all of Book 1, but the heights of his ambition weren’t made apparent until its end. Zhao’s plan for conquering the Northern Water Tribe involved destroying the Moon Spirit’s mortal form that resided in the North Pole. Doing so would severely weaken the waterbenders, robbing them of their strength in a critical fight to defend their homeland.

Even with this looming threat hanging above, several sub-plots that had been slowly woven over the first book managed to be intricately woven to completion in this blockbuster finale. They included Aang’s spiritual proficiency, Zuko’s ongoing rivalry with Zhao and Sokkka’s unfortunate short-lived romance with Princess Yue. Aang defended the North Pole by embodying the Moon Spirit, and used his heightened power in this state to drive the invading firebenders away. Till now, no waterbending feat has matched the raw power Aang displayed at the North Pole.

6 Amon Proved He Wasn’t A Threat To Be Ignored

Legend of korra: book 1, chapter 6 “and the winner is…”.

Even before it’s electrifying plot twist, “ And The Winner Is… ” seemed to have the highest stakes of any Legend of Korra episode that had preceded it. Despite a warning from Amon to suspend the Pro-bending finals, The Fire Ferrets and Chief Beifong managed to convince Republic City's Council of Leaders to host it anyway. The Fire Ferret’s next hurdle was the match itself, where their opponents blatantly cheated at every turn, with no interference from the refree. Despite expert bending from each of them, their painful defeat was inevitable and, unfortunately, their night had only just begun.

Amon and the equalists invaded the Pro-bending arena, quickly defeating the Wolfbats, before stealing their bending abilities . On Republic City’s biggest stage, he delivered a declaration of war against the benders of the world at large. Before Korra could free herself, Amon began his escape, having achieved his objective, but her inability to capture him wasn’t for lack of trying. Korra and Chief Beifong managed to defeat several high-level chi blockers, proving that benders could still put up a fight against the resistance, but ultimately, that night's victory was Amon’s.

5 Azula’s Diabolical Genius Pushed Team Avatar To The Limit

The last airbender: book 2, episode 8, "the chase".

After Azula caught wind of Team Avatar’s trail, Appa’s seasonal shedding, which was previously a routine occurrence, became yet another woe for them. Azula tracked Appa’s fur across the Earth Kingdom in a state-of-the-art locomotive, ensuring she and her team were freshly rested the entire time. Meanwhile, Team Avatar slowly succumbed to exhaustion as they were forced to fly day and night just to remain in a shaky lead.

The episode culminated in a three-way bending battle between Aang, Azula and Zuko, each of them trying to get any advantage possible over the other two. Apart from identifying Azula as a distinct threat from her brother, it allowed Team Avatar to assess Zuko anew. Instead of the ultimate enemy, they were allowed to view him as a potential ally for the first time, opening doors to the possibilities of collaboration in the future.

4 Aang Defeated The Fire Lord Without Compromising His Values

The last airbender: book 3, chapter 21, “sozin’s comet, part 4”.

The final episode of The Last Airbender featured the fated battle between Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Ozai. Before the fight, Aang had expressed apprehension about taking a life, even if it was Ozai’s, but a chance meeting with a Lion Turtle gave him the secret he needed to secure victory on his own terms. Even so, the additional boost Sozin’s comet gave to Ozai’s firebending forced Aang to remain on the defensive until he unlocked the Avatar state . After a prodigious display of the Avatar’s full potential, Aang settled the 100-year war by using energy bending to take the Fire Lord’s power away.

Zuko’s final Agni Kai with Azula was another highlight of the finale, but the true hero of that battle was Katara. She took down a firebender at the height of her power and proceeded to heal Zuko of his lightning inflicted injuries. The finale closed a chapter on the story of Aang’s journey to defeating the Fire Lord but left some potential for the spin-offs that followed in graphic novel format. After he was crowned Fire Lord, Zuko visited his father in prison and asked for information regarding his mother’s whereabouts.

3 Zaheer Unlocked An Ancient Airbending Technique

Legend of korra: book 3, chapter 12, enter the void, avatar: the last airbender finally reveals roku's story in the reckoning of roku.

After cutting a path of destruction through the Earth Kingdom, the Red Lotus made its final stand at the Northern Air Temple. All throughout Book 3, The Legend of Korra had flirted with more mature themes than the Avatar franchise had explored before, and it came to a head in its penultimate episode. The team of Tenzin, Bo Lin, Asami and Maki were double-crossed and left to perish in a temple that slowly filled with lava, but that wasn’t even the most gruesome feat of bending featured in the episode.

Zaheer had studied ancient airbender techniques and had been particularly interested in one that gave its user flight. However, it could only be accessed by the most detached of monks, those who had truly severed all connections to the earth. Zaheer’s final link to the earth was brutally severed when P’Li’s death was all but depicted on-screen. Letting her memory go allowed Zaheer to enter a state he began to call the Void. His gaining the ability to fly made him only the second airbender in history to achieve that.

2 Roku Had A Surprisingly Strong Bond With Fire Lord Sozin

The last airbender: book 3, chapter 6, “the avatar and the fire lord”.

By pure chance, or by some mysterious design, both Team Avatar and Zuko began to look into separate histories that turned out to be intertwined. Aang was visited by a vision of Avatar Roku that invited him to learn about the beginning of the 100-year war, while Zuko received a mysterious letter urging him to look into his great-grandfather’s death. Naturally, Zuko assumed he was going to learn about Sozin.

Both of them learned that Sozin and Roku had been childhood best friends, and that their relationship had deteriorated when both men put their duties above each other. Aang learned how Sozen had betrayed Roku in his most desperate hour , while Zuko learned about his true heritage and destiny. Apparently, his maternal great-grandfather had been Avatar Roku, making him an almost fated catalyst that could tip the scales to end the hundred-year war.

1 The Last Airbender’s Villains Bared Their Hearts After A Beach Day

The last airbender: book 3, chapter 5, “the beach”.

The Beach featured all the best aspects of The Last Airbender in what was purposed to be a lazy vacation episode. For the first time, the stoic, impassive villains were forced to interact with “regular teenagers” and that allowed their natural insecurities to surface, humanizing them. Their night culminated in a fireside beach chat that only humanized them further, as both Zuko and Azula expressed their candid experiences of growing up in the Fire Lord’s household.

Team Avatar, on the other hand, were once again fleeing for their lives, this time from a psychic firebender chasing a bounty. Combustion Man revealed his abilities for the first time in this episode, forcing them to creatively adapt to his unorthodox fighting style. Both aspects of the episode were equally entertaining and even more seeds of Zuko’s eventual defection from the fire nation were planted.

Netflix ‘s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is undergoing yet another behind-the-scenes change. Albert Kim , who served as showrunner for Season 1, is stepping down ahead of Season 2 , passing his responsibilities to Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani.

Those who have been following Avatar: The Last Airbender ‘s development over the years know that this isn’t the first time a major shift has occurred behind the scenes. Kim previously stepped in to replace original Avatar creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko back in August 2020.

“Who knows? Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar has the potential to be good,” DiMartino wrote in a statement upon their departure. “It might turn out to be a show many of you end up enjoying. But what I can be certain about is that whatever version ends up on-screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make.”

Avatar: The Last Airbender dropped its eight-episode first season in February 2024. Netflix issued a double renewal one month later, adding that Season 3 will also be the show’s last.

I thought this had the potential to be a good show. But I have been disappointed both by the storytelling and, unfortunately, the casting. I’m sorry to say that the boy who plays Aang is just not up to the challenge. Also, part of the fun of this franchise is that the Avatar has the ability to master bending all four elements, and I don’t think that ever happened. The show looks amazing and has some exciting action sequences, but it’s lacking on the character development front, especially in the character of Aang.

One of the challenges of live action over animation is that the child characters actually have to be played by children. The story has some very complicated and adult material, which is a lot to demand of a young and unseasoned actor. – For comparison, you can go back and watch the Harry Potter movies, and see those kids really maturing and learning to act over the years.

Exactly. I thought the kids did really well, much better than early HP movies, but seriously…you can’t expect the same level (esp at the beginning) that you can get in animation. And animation is also so heightened, ALL the characters are going to seem a little different not pulling ridiculous faces and whatnot.

It bears mentioning that the two people taking over are currently EP and Co-EP, so it’s not like control is just being handed over to outsiders new to the franchise.

That’s a strange move to go from running Season 1 of one show, to then work on Season 2 of a different show on a different streamer. Also moving to a show that started before Avatar. It would make sense if Percy Jackson was in need of real help to improve from Season 1, but I thought Season 1 did well in quality and viewership. I wonder what was the determining factor in his move.

If I understand correctly, it’s less that he’s abandoning one show to join the other, and more that he’s stepping back from showrunning so that he can work on both at the same time.

Yeah, and I can’t blame him for wanting to work on PJO–I thought season one was amazing and it’s definitely got scope to continue much longer than AtLA. Even if they adapt Legend of Korra as well, the Percy Jackson universe still has a ton more material. (Maybe not *all* as good, compared, as Korra is compared to AtLA–but still worth perusing. If it continues, that universe is going to be job security and job satisfaction all rolled into one, lol!) It sounds to me like he established things well enough at Avatar to step back from the day to day but still be available while also working on PJO.

Completely off topic but haven’t they renewed the gentlemen yet? Avatar got 2 new seasons and the gentlemen who is still in the top 5 are waiting news for whether renewed or cancelled?

What’s The Gentlemen? I’m not being funny, I’ve literally never heard of it.

What is wrong with Netflix everything is only mostly just 2 or 3 series then they put something else on sometimes not a good replacement

  • Avatar: The Last Airbender showrunner Albert Kim is stepping down from season 1 and will not continue for seasons 2 and 3.
  • The live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender follows Aang's quest to defeat the Fire Nation, remixing events from the original animated series.

Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has lost its original showrunner for season 1, who will not be returning to finish out seasons 2 and 3. The series is a remixed version of the 2005 animated series, which follows Avatar Aang on his journey to master all four elements and defeat the Fire Nation. Season 1 adapted "Book One: Water" of the original, with the follow-up seasons expected to adapt the rest of the series.

Now, Netflix reports that showrunner Albert Kim will be stepping down , and will not be coming back to lead Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 or season 3. Instead, executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will be the new co-showrunners of the series. Kim will continue to be an executive producer on the show, but he will no longer have the leadership role he did in season 1.

What A Change In Showrunners Means For The Last Airbender Seasons 2 & 3

Kim had a major role in crafting season 1 of the live-action adaptation, which featured many big moments from season 1 of The Last Airbender animated series recreated in a live-action format. Although there were some bumps in the road - with series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino departing the project during production - the showrunner still managed to complete season 1. It became a major success for Netflix , enough to justify adapting the rest of the series.

With Kim stepping down as showrunner for the remainder of the series, it's unclear if the same creative vision of season 1 will continue into the future.

Critically, though, the series has received mixed reviews from critics, who pointed out unnecessary changes to the source material and a lack of strong characterization that defined the original series. With Kim stepping down as showrunner for the remainder of the series, it's unclear if the same creative vision of season 1 will continue into the future. However, with a basis for the story already available thanks to its source material, future seasons could end up following it more closely.

With Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 introducing characters like Toph and Long Feng from the Earth Kingdom, the story will still maintain the general plot the original no matter the direction it goes. However, it remains to be seen how similar or different the live-action rendition will be now that Kim is no longer in charge of the project. The team may even have a larger plan for the series that goes beyond his stepping down, which could benefit the series by not making the change feel jarring.

All episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender are now streaming on Netflix.

Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series swaps showrunners again ahead of season 2

Albert Kim, who stepped in as showrunner after the original "Avatar" creators departed, is now leaving the show.

avatar the last airbender book 2

Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting another big behind-the-scenes shift ahead of seasons 2 and 3.

Albert Kim, who served as showrunner on season 1 after the original Avatar creators left the project, is now stepping down from his post. In his place, co-executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani are taking the reins for at least the next two seasons.

On season 1, Boylan served as a co-executive producer and writer, while Raisani served as executive producer, director, and VFX supervisor. Raisani notably directed the opening sequence of the entire series (the earthbender chase through Fire Nation territory), as well as the episodes 3 ("Omashu") and 4 ("Into the Dark").

Kim will remain on Team Avatar as an executive producer, though The Hollywood Reporter reported that he's expected to sign a development deal with Disney+, which will include work on the Percy Jackson series.

Gordon Cormier stars on the show as Aang, the next Avatar, a reincarnated being and the sole individual who can master water, earth, fire, and air to maintain balance in the world. But when the young airbender from the Southern Air Temple flees from his responsibilities, he gets trapped by a storm and frozen in ice for 100 years. His absence allows the Fire Nation to wipe out the Air Nomads and wage a war for global domination.

Kiawentiio also stars as Katara, a young waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe who joins the newly reawakened Aang on his quest to restore peace to the world; Ian Ousley stars as Sokka, Katara's brother; and Dallas Liu stars as Zuko, the banished Fire Nation prince who's determined to hunt down the Avatar to restore his honor.

Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who created the original animated Avatar series, were initially involved with the live-action adaptation. However, they both dropped out in 2020, citing unresolvable creative differences.

Kim previously spoke to EW about working with DiMartino and Konietzko, and using the groundwork they laid to help shape the show. Both are credited as writing the teleplay for the premiere episode with Kim, while Konietzko is credited on the teleplay for episode 6 with Emily Kim and Hunter Ries, based on a story from Konietzko and DiMartino.

"When I first got the call, I was really excited just to sit down with them, because I was in such awe of what they had created back for Nickelodeon," Kim said. "They had done a fair amount of visual exploration, as well as narrative [work] and how to translate the show. I got along really well with them, and we worked together for a while."

Netflix announced a renewal for seasons 2 and 3 very shortly after Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered on the streaming platform on Feb. 22. With that news, the show will be able to finish its adaptation of the original animated series.
