What you are seeing is the hidden field codes in Word, EndNote™ which uses to hold the reference information for your formatted citations. To fix the problem:
Word 2007/2010/2013/2016:
Word 2010/2013/2016: Go to the "File" tab in Word 2010/2013/2016 ribbon, and click "Options." Word 2007: Go to the Office icon in the upper left, and click "Word Options" at the bottom of this menu.
- Click on the Advanced option on the left hand side and scroll down to the section titled "Show Document Content."
- Uncheck the item titled "Show field codes instead of their values" and click OK.
- The document should now appear normal.
- In Word, go to the "Tools" menu, and select "Options."
- Here, on the "View" tab, uncheck the box named "Field Codes".
- Click "OK".
On a macOS:
- In Word, go to the "Word" menu, and select "Preferences".
- Here, on the "View" menu, uncheck the box named "Field Codes".
- Click "OK".
- The document should now appear normal.

To hide the field codes for a single citation that may be behaving this way Right Click on the specific citation in the document, or [Control]+Click on a Mac, and choose the "Toggle Field Code" option from the context menu. This will hide the field code, and display the formatted citation if the problem is affecting a single citation.
