Speech on Waste Management

Waste management is a crucial concern for our planet. It’s all about how we handle trash, from its start to its final disposal.

You are part of this process too! Every day, your choices can help reduce waste and keep our Earth clean.

1-minute Speech on Waste Management

Good day everyone,

Waste management is an issue that touches each and every one of us, yet it’s an issue that we often overlook in our daily lives. It is a matter of utmost importance that has wide-spread implications for our community, our environment, and our future.

We produce waste every day, be it in our homes, our schools, or our workplaces. This waste, if not managed correctly, can pose serious problems. It can cause pollution, spread diseases, and harm our fauna and flora. We have seen the adverse effects of improper waste management in our rivers, on our roads and in our surroundings.

However, we should not despair. There are solutions to these problems. One of the ways to manage waste is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reduce means to cut back on the amount of waste we produce. Reuse means to use items as many times as possible before discarding them. Recycle means to turn waste into new products. By adopting these three Rs, we can significantly cut down the amount of waste we generate.

Another solution is composting. Organic waste like fruit peels, vegetable scraps, and leaves can be turned into compost, a nutrient-rich soil enhancer that is great for gardening. This not only reduces the amount of waste going into our landfills, but also benefits our gardens and parks.

In conclusion, waste management is not just the responsibility of the government or waste management companies. It is our responsibility too. So let’s pledge today to reduce, reuse, and recycle to ensure a cleaner and healthier environment for us and for future generations. Thank you!

2-minute Speech on Waste Management

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, I stand before you to address a topic that is pivotal to our health, our environment, and our future – Waste Management. Waste management is a broad term that encapsulates everything from waste collection to disposal. In simple terms, it’s how we handle, control, and discard the waste that we produce daily.

Waste is an inevitable by-product of human activity. From the moment we wake up to the time we go to bed, we generate waste in one form or another. We throw away half-eaten food, plastic bags, cans, and bottles. And while doing so might seem inconsequential at the moment, the cumulative effect of our waste production is a significant threat to our environment.

Landfills, a common method of waste disposal, are quickly reaching their maximum capacity. Not only do they occupy massive land areas, but they also cause soil and groundwater pollution. Incineration, another common technique, leads to air pollution. These methods, while helpful in the short term, are not sustainable. We need to shift our focus towards sustainable waste management.

The concept of sustainable waste management is simple – reduce, reuse, and recycle. The first step, reduction, starts with each one of us. We need to be more conscious of our consumption habits. Simple practices like using a reusable shopping bag instead of plastic ones, minimizing food waste, or choosing products with less packaging can significantly reduce our waste production.

The second step is reuse. Many items that we consider waste can actually be reused. For example, an old t-shirt can be used as a cleaning cloth, or glass jars can be reused to store food items. By finding innovative ways to reuse items, we can decrease the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

The third and final step is recycling. Materials like paper, glass, metal, and plastic can be recycled and used to produce new items. Local recycling facilities play a crucial role in this process. However, it’s our responsibility to ensure that we segregate our waste appropriately for recycling.

Yet, these individual efforts will be in vain if not complemented by effective waste management policies at the governmental level. We need strict regulations for waste disposal, incentives for recycling, and initiatives for community awareness. Moreover, businesses should be encouraged to adopt greener manufacturing processes and to take responsibility for the waste they generate.

In conclusion, waste management is not just an environmental issue; it’s a social issue, a political issue, and above all, it’s a personal issue. We all have a role to play. Let’s not forget that the earth does not belong to us; we belong to the earth. So, let’s treat it with the respect it deserves. After all, there is no planet B.

Let us all pledge to become more responsible citizens, rethink our consumption patterns, and be more mindful of the waste we produce. Together, we can pave the way for a healthier, cleaner, and more sustainable world for ourselves and future generations.

Speech on Waste Management

As waste management is one of our country’s most important concerns these days given the fast pace of growing population and increasing wastes, the environmental risk factors have also increased. The indisposed waste causes a lot of harm to our environment and breeds various diseases. Though the government is trying to sensitize people on this issue through its “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”, as a citizen of this country it becomes our responsibility too to actively participate in this campaign and make our country clean and attractive. So if you need to address public or students at any institution, then our speech on waste management will certainly be of great help to you. Our both short speech on waste management and long speech on waste management are written from the point of view of everyone; hence these are comprehensive and easy to understand. You can use them as a reference point anytime.

Long and Short Waste Management Speech

Waste management speech – 1 (500 words, 5 minutes speech).

Hon’ble Principal, Vice Principal, Respected Colleagues and My Dear Children! Everybody is heartily welcomed at our school’s waste management program.

As a social science teacher of the senior secondary classes, I have been given this privilege to host this program and enlighten our students on various ways of managing the wastes of our homes and surroundings so that cleanliness can be encouraged amongst our young generation too.

Before I discuss various aspects of managing wastes, let me first ask you what waste management is all about?

Waste management is that branch of science that looks into the prevention and supervising of wastes. We all should owe some responsibility towards our environment and put every bit of efforts towards preserving it. Always remember that a clean and attractive environment will encourage a healthy lifestyle in the people. This is mainly because of the fact that a healthy and clean environment will not become a breeding place of mosquitoes and diseases and hence people living in those areas will remain immune to the diseases caused by waste.

The best possible method of managing solid waste is to reuse or reduce them. There are various ways of waste reduction. Firstly, manufacturing companies are bringing products with an innovative packaging which doesn’t harm the environment and create less garbage to be disposed in the environment after the consumption of that product. In fact, there are some manufacturing companies that encourage their consumers to carry their own reusable packaging item. And as responsible citizens of our country, we should encourage the use of reusable products in our family and people living in our surroundings.

As far as disposing waste is concerned, there are many ways of doing it – landfills, combustion/incineration and composting, to name a few. Disposing garbage or daily waste in the landfills is the most common method of waste disposal since a long time. This method of waste disposal involves burying the garbage in the land. In order to eliminate foul smell and risks caused to health some processes are involved. Even though it is true that landfills are the highly sought after method of waste removal, it is certainly not successful amidst space constraint.

Next comes, combustion or incineration, which is yet another method of waste disposal where solid wastes are made to burn at high temperatures so that it can be transformed into gaseous products or a residual form. The biggest benefit derived from this type of waste disposal method is that it has the capacity to reduce the amount of solid waste to 20-30 percent of the actual amount, thereby decreasing the space required to dispose them and bring down the burden from landfills.

Composting is a hassle free and natural process of bio-degradation that makes use of the organic wastes, i.e. remnants of kitchen, plant and garden waste and transforms it into nutrient-rich food for the plants. Clearly, composting is one of the finest methods for the disposal of waste as it can convert risky organic products into safe compost. However, it’s a slow method and requires a lot of space.

Since there are a lot of ways of waste disposal, you should look for a method that best suits you and allows you to maintain a clean environment without any struggle.

Waste Management Speech – 2 (500 Words, 5 Minutes Speech)

Respected Senior Managers, Managers, Colleagues and My Dear Friends – hope you all are doing good! I welcome everybody to the annual festival of our club and I am extremely pleased at the incredible performance of my team members. Of course, credit also goes to our respected senior manager and manager for dexterously delegating the responsibility and personally involving themselves in each and every project.

However, one issue with the team that management has come across is the lack of attentiveness towards maintaining a hygienic work condition. Garbage, especially packaging wrappers are strewn on the floor, empty tea cups are seen on the work table, etc. So today on this occasion since each one of us is present under one roof, I considered it wise to share a few concerns with you and waste management being one of the key areas.

It is clear that if we remain indifferent towards the unclean and unhygienic environment in our office and we are likely to have this same attitude at our home and in fact anywhere we go. But as a responsible global citizen, it becomes our responsibility to preserve our planet earth and keep it away from every possible threat, be it the threat of growing waste with the ever growing population on our planet.

With the growth of human population, new places for human settlements are required and more industries in order to fulfill the basic requirement of the growing population. Then, different means of agriculture are adopted through the use of pesticides and fertilizers in order to raise the productivity level. There is so much more that is done to have a comfortable lifestyle. But do you realize what our environment receives in return on which we are dependant so much for our daily sustenance? Unfortunately, it’s waste and only waste from both industrial as well as domestic sectors!

Our domestic and industrial wastes heavily affect the environment and increase the pollution level. So in order to cause reduction in waste and effectively manage it, a couple of things can be done. Primarily, we should ensure that garbage is only thrown into the dustbin and not anywhere. And if the waste is a recyclable material, then put it into the recyclable bin and not in a garbage bin. Let us ensure from our end that both the bins are clearly labeled. This way reduction in waste can be made possible and waste material can be recycled for the next use; hence using it as a valuable resource.

In fact, at your homes too old material can be recycled, such as bags and jars; whereas broken items can be repaired to minimize waste. And as far as recycling old or discarded items are concerned, it can prove to very helpful for our environment, i.e. in bringing down the level of land, air, water, and soil pollution. By recycling old waste means we’ll not have to depend quite a lot on natural resources, which have become exhausted through the continuous use. Thirdly, it requires a lot of energy to furnish a new item using raw materials than from recycling old items. This would imply that we can become more efficient in terms of energy, conserve it and it will also help in bringing down the price of products.

Managing waste is not impossible, provided each of us should get involved and save our environment from major catastrophic disasters.

Waste Management Speech – 3 (500 Words, 5 Minutes Speech)

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen!

Today, this event has been organized in this locality for the discussion over the issue of the waste management and I would like to thank all of you for showing your interest towards the responsibility of waste. As a host of today’s discussion, I would like to explain you that what waste management is about and its issues that are related to it?

Managing waste has been a leading problem from many years and this problem is getting bigger from time to time since the period of industrialization in the country. It has many harmful effects on the environment and atmosphere. The gasses which came out of these unmanaged wastes are very harmful for the environment and thus it creates air pollution due to which many people suffers from respiratory problems. One of the reasons for the global warming is this unmanaged waste. There are many industries that are located near the rivers or oceans and dispose their waste into these water bodies and hence it creates water pollution. They do not realize that disposing these harmful wastes such as chemicals etc can lead to many diseases and also can be harmful for the creatures living under water. To overcome these problems we need to follow proper waste disposing methods.

The meaning of waste disposal or waste management is quite simple. It means to dispose the material which is used, excreted or not usable. There are many methods of disposing waste in the right way and they are not harmful for the environment such as recycling- reuse of the useful part from the discarded item, Landfills– to throw the daily garbage in the landfills, Combustion or Incineration – To burn the waste material and convert them into gaseous products, Plasma Gasification – To break down the molecular bonds of the waste through the immense heat created by the plasma which is an electrically charged gas, Waste to Energy – To convert non- recyclable waste into useful products such as heat, electricity or fuel through different processes, Composting – To convert biodegradable waste such as kitchen or garden waste into nutritional food for plants, Waste Minimization – the best method to cut down the creation of the waste is by avoiding plastic bags and using the reusable products.

These methods can be useful only when we will try to initiate them in our daily life. If we want to do something for the global warming then this is also a way to help.

Now it is the high time when we need to do something regarding waste management and we should understand that what we are going to throw is actually a waste or may be recyclable. There should be rise of the latest waste disposal machines and technology that are centered in the municipalities.

On this note, I would like to end my speech and extend special thanks to the event organizers for organizing such an inspiring event.

Thank you and I wish you all a great day ahead!

Waste Management Speech – 4 (500 Words, 5 Minutes Speech)

Good Morning Respected Principal, Respected Teachers and My Dear Friends!

As we all know that today is World Environment Day and on this beautiful occasion our school has organized a social event for spreading awareness among young generation and people about the problems of environment and its solutions. As a head girl of this school, I am feeling very fortunate to host this program and before the event begins, I would like to deliver a speech on waste management because it is one of the major environmental problems from many years.

We all are aware of the bad condition of the waste management and there are barely some places in the country that are using the correct method of waste disposal. Unmanaged waste that is not disposed in a correct way gives birth to many diseases and pollution. There is an urgent need of proper waste management. There are many problems that are rising from improper waste management.

The sewage that is getting drained into the water bodies is creating water pollution. Many rural areas do not have the access to proper toilets and those who have access are leaking in the proper sewage system. There are many problems regarding the unmanaged waste such as the rise of different kinds of harmful mosquitoes like malaria and dengue. There are many cases of deaths of people due to dengue and malaria that are rising due to improper waste management. It also creates harmful bacteria and viruses that lead to many diseases.

If we want to get rid of all these problems then there are many ways by which these problems could be solved. There are many new technological inventions of waste disposing machines that are used by municipalities but there are some techniques through which we can help in solving this problem at our level such as recycling, landfills, combustion, plasma gasification (an electrically charged gas), to convert waste into energy (electricity, heat, fuel), compositing, etc.

There are some policies and operations that are framed by the Indian government for waste management. In September 2000, Solid Waste Policy was framed and it specifies the duties and responsibility towards the hygienic waste management for cities of India. It was based on the report of the Committee for Solid Waste Management to the Supreme Court given on March 1999. In India, plastic bags are used on daily bases and thus in most Indian landfills they are dumped and it is dangerous for the environment. According to the policy, they provide a daily doorstep collection of biodegradable waste for compositing because in India we need manures for maintaining soil fertility.

Also, there is a campaign that was launched in recent year was Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. It was launched on October 2, 2014 at Rajghat, New Delhi by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Around three million government employees and students around the country are participating in this campaign. The main aim of this campaign is to provide facility of toilet in rural areas and maintain cleanliness around the country.

On this note I would like to end my speech and extend special thanks to our honorable principal ma’am and managing committee for organizing such a wonderful event for social awareness.

Awareness Campaigns for Eco-Friendly Waste Management

The role of public awareness campaigns in promoting eco-friendly waste management practices.

zero waste ood waste

Waste management has become an increasingly important issue as the world’s population grows and consumption patterns change. The traditional approach of disposing of waste in landfills is no longer sustainable, and there is a need to adopt eco-friendly waste management practices that reduce the impact of waste on the environment. Eco-friendly waste management is the practice of reducing, reusing and recycling waste to minimize its impact on the environment.

The Importance Of Eco-Friendly Waste Management Practices

Eco-friendly waste management practices are important because they reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, which reduces the release of methane and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

These practices also conserve natural resources and reduce pollution. For example, by recycling paper, we can reduce the number of trees that are cut down, which helps to preserve forests and maintain biodiversity. By reducing waste, we also reduce the demand for new materials, which reduces the energy required to extract and process raw materials.

The Need For Public Awareness Campaigns

Despite the benefits of eco-friendly waste management practices, many individuals and businesses are not aware of the need to adopt these practices. This is where public awareness campaigns play a critical role.

Public awareness campaigns are designed to educate people about the importance of such practices and to encourage them to take action. These campaigns can be targeted at specific groups, such as school children or businesses, and can be delivered through a variety of channels, such as social media, television, or print media.

Understanding Eco-Friendly Waste Management Practices

To understand how public awareness campaigns can promote waste management practices, it is important to first understand what these practices entail. Eco-friendly waste management practices are based on the principle of reducing, reusing, and recycling.

The first component is to reduce the amount of waste that is produced. This can be achieved through a variety of strategies, such as buying products with less packaging, using reusable bags instead of disposable ones, and avoiding single-use products. Businesses can also adopt strategies to reduce waste, such as using digital documents instead of paper and implementing energy-efficient practices to reduce the amount of waste produced.

The second component of eco-friendly waste management is to reuse items instead of throwing them away. This can be achieved by repairing items instead of buying new ones, donating items that are no longer needed, or repurposing items for new use. Businesses can also adopt strategies to reuse materials, such as using reusable containers instead of disposable ones and implementing a circular economy model where waste is used as a resource.

The third component is to recycle materials that cannot be reduced or reused. This can be achieved by separating recyclable materials from non-recyclable materials and disposing of them appropriately. Recycling can also be extended to include composting, which is the process of breaking down organic waste into nutrient-rich soil that can be used to fertilize plants.

Medical waste disposal

Medical waste requires specialized medical waste disposal methods to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Medical waste can include items such as sharps, medical gloves, and contaminated clothing. The improper disposal of medical waste can have serious consequences, including the spread of infectious diseases and environmental contamination. Public awareness campaigns can play an important role in promoting proper medical waste disposal practices, such as medical waste disposal Houston separating medical waste from other types of waste and disposing of it through specialized disposal methods.

Public Awareness Campaigns For Eco-Friendly Waste Management

Public awareness campaigns are an effective way to promote eco-friendly waste management practices. These campaigns can be designed to target specific groups, such as school children or businesses, and can be delivered through a variety of channels, such as social media, television, or print media.

Understanding the role of public awareness campaigns

The primary goal of public awareness campaigns is to educate people about the benefits of eco-friendly waste management practices and to encourage them to take action. These campaigns can also be used to dispel misconceptions about waste management practices and to provide information about proper waste disposal methods.

Successful public awareness campaigns

There are many examples of successful public awareness campaigns that have promoted eco-friendly waste management practices. One example is the “Love Food Hate Waste” campaign launched by the United Kingdom’s Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP). The campaign aimed to reduce the amount of food that is wasted by households by providing tips on how to reduce food waste and save money. The campaign used a variety of channels, such as television commercials, social media, and print media, to reach its target audience. The campaign was successful in reducing food waste in the UK by 21% between 2007 and 2015.

Another example of a successful public awareness campaign is the “Recycle Now” campaign launched by WRAP. The campaign aimed to increase recycling rates in the UK by providing information on what can be recycled and how to recycle it. The campaign used a variety of channels, such as television commercials, social media, and print media, to reach its target audience. The campaign was successful in increasing recycling rates in the UK from 11% in 2000 to 45% in 2017.

Challenges faced in promoting eco-friendly waste management practices

Despite the benefits of eco-friendly waste management practices, many challenges must be addressed to promote their adoption.

Lack of awareness

One of the main challenges is the lack of awareness about the importance of eco-friendly waste management practices. Many individuals and businesses are not aware of the impact that waste has on the environment or the benefits of adopting eco-friendly waste management practices. Public awareness campaigns can help to address this challenge by providing information and education about these practices.

Misconceptions about waste management practices

Another challenge is the presence of misconceptions about waste management practices. For example, some people may believe that it is better to throw away plastic bags than to recycle them. Public awareness campaigns can help to dispel these misconceptions by providing accurate information about waste management practices and their impact on the environment.

Lack of proper infrastructure

Another challenge is the lack of proper infrastructure to support eco-friendly waste management practices. For example, some communities may not have access to recycling facilities or composting programs. Public awareness campaigns can help to raise awareness about the need for proper waste management infrastructure and can encourage policymakers to invest in these resources.

Eco-friendly waste management practices are essential for reducing the impact of waste on the environment. Public awareness campaigns play a critical role in promoting these practices by educating people about their benefits and encouraging them to take action. To design an effective campaign, it is important to understand the target audience and use a variety of channels to reach them. The challenges of promoting eco-friendly waste management practices can be addressed through public awareness campaigns that provide accurate information and encourage policymakers to invest in the necessary infrastructure. By working together, we can promote eco-friendly practices and create a more sustainable future.

The modern civilization is now struggling with the problems of high build up of waste and its impact on the immediate and global environment. The present scenario calls for a smart handling of waste which includes processing and recycling as per the latest technology. Proper waste management helps us be protective towards the environment. In fact, due collection of waste and disposal is the key to make the global cleanliness and sustainability programmes successful. Here we are providing you four (4) speech on Waste Management to help you with this topic in your examination. Good luck! You can select any waste management speech according to your and requirement:

Long and Short Speech on Waste Management in English

Waste management speech – 1.

Dear All! Welcome to the school auditorium!

Before I begin my speech on waste management, please allow me to extend special thanks to our College Committee Members and Principal for always encouraging programmes based on social awareness. I sincerely hope that my fellow students would reap maximum benefits out of it by informing themselves about the burning issues of our times that our nation is grappling with and what we as the young generation of today can do to curb these escalating issues.

One such problem that has caught people’s attention in the current scenario is the ever increasing waste and our inability to deal with it. With the ever growing human population and increasing living standard of people, new settlements are seen burgeoning and industries have also been established to meet the growing human needs for survival. Of course, new agricultural methods are adopted with the help of pesticides and fertilizers for meeting the growing needs for consumption. So much other things are also practiced for a comfy living. In return, waste matter is generated from industrial and domestic activities, which is dumped into our surroundings.

Cities are now struggling with the problems of high build up of waste and its impact on our immediate and global environment. As a result, environmental pollution has come to an alarming stage where our environment is experiencing an irreparable damage. Solid and liquid wastes as well as gas particles released from the industries; run off pesticides and fertilizers from the agricultural practices as well as household sewage from urban regions have come to a point beyond disposal.

However, this problem has also given citizens an opportunity to look for solutions by involving their society and private sectors, by involving latest innovations for disposal of waste and last but not the least, involving behavioral changes and raising people’s consciousness.

It’s high time when we have to do a smart handling of “waste” and actually understand whether waste is indeed a waste or not. There is an obvious requirement for the latest waste disposal technology which is centered on municipalities and makes use of high/energy technology in order to progress towards processing and recycling of waste.

The easier waste management method would be to bring down the formation of waste materials. This way we can control the quantity of waste thrown in the landfills. You can recycle old materials for waste reduction and it can be bags, jars, repairing broken pieces rather than buying a new one, avoiding the use of disposable items, such as plastic glass and bags, putting into use second hand products and purchasing products that don’t require much designing.

Then composting is yet again a hassle-free and natural bio-degradation based process which makes use of organic waste, i.e. kitchen waste and remains of garden or plants and transforms it into nutrient-rich food for your plants. It is one of the excellent methods of waste disposal where it can transform unsafe organic items into safe compost.

Landfills are the highly sought after methods for the disposal of waste these days. Landfills are only successful where there is a lot of space and unfortunately it’s a success only in developed countries. However, it is said that landfills lead to water and air pollution and inevitably affect the environment. So besides this, you can look for other methods I have just described for waste management and protect your environment from the hazardous impact of piled up waste.

Thank You!!

Waste Management Speech – 2

Today is the World Environment Day and our company has always emphasized on adopting environment-friendly measures and doing waste management. I would like to share some important thoughts on waste management on this occasion.

Waste disposal or waste management refers to managing the waste from its initiation to its final removal. This includes collation, transportation, processing, re-cycling and finally disposal of waste along with monitoring, regulation and control. It also covers the lawful and regulatory aspects that relates to the waste management, including the instructions and guidance on recycling and disposal of waste management, etc.

The phrase usually relates to all types of waste, whether produced during the withdrawal of raw materials, the dispensation of raw materials into final goods, consumption of final good, or other human activities such as metropolitan (institutional, residential and commercial), farming and social (household hazardous waste, health care and sewage sludge, etc.) The objective of the waste management is to minimize the hazardous effect of waste materials on health, environment or aesthetics.

The practice of waste management varies country-wise (developed and developing nations), region-wise (urban and rural area) and sector-wise (residential and industrial). While urban regions may employ advanced machines and latest technology to supervise the waste, rural areas may be more dependent upon the human labour; residential areas may utilize safe and sound process whereas industries may utilize giant machines, etc in order to control the factory waste products. The waste materials at the institutional and residential level in the metros and cities are administered by the local authorities also known as Municipal Corporation; while the management of harmless industrial and commercial waste is accomplished by the generator of those waste.

I would now like to point out the most commonly used methods for waste management:

Landfills – This is managed by throwing the daily garbage in the landfills; it is the most common method used today.

Recovery and Recycling – Through this method, the useful items from the discarded is extracted for the next use such as conversion into energy, usable heat, fuel, electricity, etc.

Combustion or Incineration – In this method, community solid wastes are burned at high temperatures in order to convert the same into gaseous products or residue.

Plasma Gasification – Plasma is a basically an electrically charged gas. In this method, the molecular bonds of the waste are broken down due to the intense heat in the container.

Waste to Energy – In this method, the non-recyclable waste materials are converted into useful electricity, heat or fuel through various processes.

Composting – It is a natural process of bio-degradation; it converts the kitchen, plant and garden waste into nutritional food for the plants.

Waste Minimization – The best method is to minimize the creation of waste products by repairing the broken utensils, avoidance of plastic bags, etc.

It is important that we are protective towards our environment and always follow the 3Rs of waste hierarchy: ‘Reduce’, ‘Re-use’ and ‘Recycle’ in order to save our environment.

Waste Management Speech – 3

Good morning respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends.

The topic allocated to me for our today’s assembly is ‘Waste Management’. We as human beings should necessarily be aware and cautious about this topic.

This term means the management of the waste. So, what exactly does waste mean?  As our teacher has always taught us that waste means something that is eliminated or discarded as no longer useful or required after a stage. It is something worthless.

We as human beings should understand that everything that is called waste, involves some cost and effort of somebody or the other. We should minimize or further aim at completely eliminating the waste from our lives. Waste is both a consequence and a symptom of lives lived or things used unwisely.

Waste management is the science that deals with prevention and monitoring of wastes. Though it is a science, but it is not a difficult one. We do not need a rocket science implementation for this. It is as simple as monitoring our activities and actions so that we ultimately release the least amount of waste.

Collection of waste and disposal of rubbish plays an extremely important role in the global cleanliness and sustainability drive. Most crucial is this accompanied with people’s health and the conservation of resources being the responsibility of every government. Our government has created many garbage dumps that clearly indicate solid waste in separate box and other waste in separate box. This is deliberately done so as to make it convenient for the companies or government to get this waste recycled and ready for next use in some other form.

In earlier generations during our great great grandparent’s times, people used to dump their waste by digging a hole beneath the surface. At that point of time, this was considered the best as this could easily be decomposed and act as fertilizer of some sort. But for our generation or the coming one, this option is not at all feasible. This is so because, the population earlier was less and hence waste creation was less, also due to harsh chemicals and varied artificial products today; it is not at all easy for the waste to be decomposed.

Keeping in mind the healthy pollution free air and overall environment; we should focus on managing our waste and even monitor the activities of others so that we ensure less creation of waste.

To conclude my point of discussion; I would just request you all to please watch your actions very closely and ensure the minimal wastage. We should educate the public on the importance of conserving environment by managing solid wastes. We all have the responsibility to make people learn the impacts which one can avail as benefits through managing wastes. Please spread the message and help us save our environment. Let’s aim at complete elimination or the perfect management of waste all around.

Thank you for being a part of this discussion. Your presence encouraged me to put forward my point in the most effective way. Thank you!

Waste Management Speech – 4

Hello friends, welcome to this seminar on the occasion of the World Environment Day. It feels so good to see such a large number of enthusiastic audience. I am glad that we all are gathered here to share our views on the environmental related topics.

I chose ‘waste management’ as my topic for today’s discussion. Managing waste is, in itself, a great deed that one can do to directly contribute for the society and the mother earth. One should monitor their activities and the amount of waste produced because of those activities.

Amongst all, the companies or the industries specifically the ones that manufacture should opt for the processes or techniques that control the waste production. In order to make our surroundings and environment healthy one should manage the waste properly. Manufacturing companies should encourage the consumers or customers to bring their own reusable for packaging and also the public should be given priority to choose reusable products.

To understand it more precisely, I would say that waste management is the process of treating solid wastes. It also offers variety of solutions for recycling items that don’t belong to trash or are completely discarded and of no use. Waste management is about how garbage and waste can be used as a valuable resource for us and our future generations. Waste management disposes of the products and substances that you have used in a safe and efficient manner. Rubbish, garbage and waste can cause air and water pollution. Rotting garbage is also known to produce lot many harmful gases that mix with the air and can cause breathing problems in people.

Waste management is something that each and every household, human being and business owner in the world needs. There are many authorities that collect such waste and focus on recycling it for the betterment of the society. This is done by method of regular collections. These industries work on overall concept of waste management. It includes all amongst other things, collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste together with monitoring and regulation. Waste can easily be converted into a reusable things by getting it recycled.

We as individuals should put in our efforts to work on waste management for the betterment of ourselves, our future generation and the overall economy. We all should understand that waste can be created by anything. It can be generated during the extraction of raw material, the processing of raw materials into intermediate and final products, the consumption of final products, or other human activities including municipal, agricultural, and social activities. And, waste management is intended to reduce adverse effects of waste on health and the environment.

To conclude my discussion, I would just like to tell you all that it is our responsibility to closely adhere each and every rule of government to control the waste and exercise waste management in an efficient way. Helping eliminate waste will add on to the environment’s health and prosperity. We as citizens of the country owe this responsibility of ensuring the proper execution of waste management.

Awareness campaign on waste disposal

Awareness campaign on waste management and disposal.

Why Awareness campaign on waste management is so important?

Waste management and disposal of waste is a serious issue that we are facing nowadays. If we are not aware of proper waste management, it leads to serious issues like air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution. By doing small practices in our daily life we can make a huge difference. For that, we all have to practice the “3Rs” in our daily life.

The 3Rs – Reuse, Reduce, Recycle

Reduce- try to reduce the use of single-use products maximum especially plastic substances.

Reuse- always try to reuse day to life things. For example, carry kit when you are going for shopping.

Recycle- try maximum to recycle or reuse things other than disposing of.

Above all 3R’s will help us and our society for the proper disposal of waste management.

In a bid to raise awareness regarding effective disposal of waste, students of the Department of Communicative English visited a total of 329 houses in Mulavukad Grama Panchayat . They shared knowledge and strategies on proper waste management. With the help of Google Forms, the present methods of waste disposal were studied and the concept of bucket composting was introduced. A report based on the survey was later submitted to the Panchayat President.

While it is the government’s and municipality’s mandate to ensure that its citizens stay in a clean and safe environment, it is of concern that waste management remains a big challenge in urban areas especially in developing countries. Increased economic development, rapid population growth and improvement of living standards are among the factors attributed to increased quantity and complexity of solid waste being generated. On the other hand, while people generate wastes, they continue to be looked at as passive recipients of municipality services. Ultimately, citizens fail to recognise their role in waste management and become unwilling to either pay for service delivery or participate in clean-up campaigns. Waste dumps are prime breeding sites for communicable disease vectors such as rodents, mosquitoes and houseflies, which can exacerbate the prevalence of water, food and waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. This chapter thus describes the methodology of successfully conducting a community-led cleanup campaign. It is based on experience gained during implementation of an urban water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) project. Ward level clean-up campaigns were organised and conducted by community members and local leaders. Besides clearing illegal dumpsites, the activity was also used to raise awareness on the consequence of waste dumping. The experience showed that organising a clean-up campaign only requires careful timeous planning. Overall, it was concluded that not only does the activity serve the practical purpose of cleaning, but it also creates a greater sense of unity and friendship among community members. Additionally, the power of beautification in a clean-up campaign wold naturally motivate residents to believe that their problems could be solved, resulting in a shared responsibility for sustainable management of waste and commons at local level.

1. Introduction

Solid waste is any material that is primarily not a liquid or gas and is unwanted and/or unvalued, discarded by its owner, and can be from domestic, commercial or industrial operations [ 1 ]. Globally, there are ongoing campaigns to promote sustainable use of the environment while considering the negative effects of waste in general as well as climate change, which have become evident in a number of regions [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. In particular, the primary aim of sustainable solid waste management is to address concerns related to environmental pollution, public health, land use, resource management and socio-economic impacts associated with improper disposal of waste. However, as urbanisation continues, the management of solid waste in particular, remains a major public health and environmental concern. Specifically in Zimbabwe’s urban areas, more than 2.5 million tonnes of industrial and household waste is produced per annum [ 6 ]. The bulk of this waste has been noted to end up in open, illegal dump sites, urban streams and wetlands, resulting in blocked drainage systems, contaminated surface and groundwater, which causes several environmental, health and economical challenges.

Even though several studies have been conducted globally on waste management and the effects of pollution [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ] this unfortunately, has not translated into an improvement in solid waste management especially in developing countries such as Zimbabwe. Various factors, for example, rapid urbanisation, population and economic growth as well as elevated human standard way of living have also been cited as key determinants enhancing waste generation in developing countries [ 12 ]. Zimbabwe, despite having some well crafted legislations on waste management (Environmental Management Act (EMA), Chapter 20: 27, Urban Councils Act, Chapter 29:15), has not been spared from solid waste management challenges. These include low collection coverage, irregular collection services, crude open dumping and burning. Section 70 (1) of the country’s EMA Act stipulates that ‘No person shall discharge or dispose any waste in a manner that causes environmental pollution or ill health to any person’. Additionally, Section 83 (1) of the same Act prohibits littering by stating that: No person shall discard, dump or leave any litter on any land or water surface, street, road or site in or at any place except in a container provided for that purpose or at a place which has been specially designated, indicated, provided or set apart for such purpose [ 13 ].

Solid Waste management entails the collection, transportation and disposal services. While it is a mandate of governments and local authorities to ensure that their citizens stay in clean and safe environments, it is of concern that solid waste management still remains a big challenge in urban areas, especially of developing countries. Various studies have highlighted that active community participation is essential for improved service delivery including solid waste management [ 14 , 15 , 16 ]. Community participation can comprise varying degrees of involvement of the local community ranging from contribution of cash, labour, consultation, adaptation of behaviour, involvement in administration, management and decision-making. Countries continue to be expected to progress in improved waste management by 2020; through the sharing of knowledge, experience and best practices [ 17 ]. The benefits of this integrated sustainable solid waste management approach includes natural resource conservation, reduction of the amount of waste to be recycled or transported for land filling, decrease in air pollution and greenhouse production, reduction in production of toxic waste and ultimately reduction in cost related to the collection and disposal of waste [ 18 ]. Countries thus need to take all possible measures to prevent unsound management or illegal dumping of waste particularly hazardous waste especially given the negative effects of waste.

2. Effects of illegal waste dumping

Poorly managed wastes have several effects and impact on human and animal health, economic development and social impact [ 19 , 20 , 21 ]. Waste dumps are prime breeding sites for communicable disease vectors such as rodents, mosquitoes and houseflies [ 22 ]. These vectors tend to exacerbate the prevalence of food, water and waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and malaria, among other. For example, Zimbabwe experienced a huge cholera outbreak between from 2008 to 2009, recording 98,952 cases and cases and a mobidity of 4288. Key drivers cited for this huge outbreak was inadequate supply of good quality water as well as poor solid waste management [ 23 ]. On the other hand, waste incineration, which had and continue as common practise in urban areas, releases fumes that naturally cause acute respiratory infections as well as odours that make the environment uninhabitable. It is reported that less than 30% of urban waste in developing countries is collected and disposed appropriately.

Leachate from dumpsite pollutes underground water, which has emerged as an alternative water source in most urban areas such as Harare in Zimbabwe, as the city continues to experience serious municipal water supply challenges. Besides the public health concern, illegal waste dumps tend to reduce the aesthetic status of a neighbourhood, thus reducing the economic value of properties within the vicinity [ 24 ]. Solid waste tends to clog drains thus causing flooding. Additionally, solid waste may also harm animals that consume it unknowingly, as well as affect economic development through diminished environmental value and tourism, which are generally viewed as externalities as they are negative costs [ 25 ], which need to be incorporated into sustainable development models.

The proliferation of rubbish is attributed to many factors, key among them being, population increase, rapid urban growth, lack of environmental education, inadequate bins and irregularities in waste collection by the responsible authority [ 12 ]. While efforts are being made by some local authorities to secure modern state of art waste management equipment such as compactors, this development has not yielded the desired results as communities still continue to dump waste. Insufficient technical services, lack of spare parts and low maintenance budgets are among the factors attributed to the poor performance of advanced waste management technologies currently being adopted by some local authorities in low developed countries. When such sophisticated equipment breaks down the entire waste management system fails. On the other hand, generally people litter because for lack of ownership for the public facilities and areas, because they believe someone else will do it, eg the municipality, or that they find the litter tolerable or even that they would have given up since the littrer had already accumulated anyway. Hence the challenge where common resources are subject to neglect and the widely used phrase “tragedy of the commons” [ 26 , 27 , 28 , 29 ].

Rangeti, Tendere [ 16 ] highlighted that the failure of the top-down approaches towards waste management especially in developing countries, cannot only been attributed to technical and financial challenges, but also to the low involvement of communities in service delivery. Whereas every person generates waste, they continue to be looked at as passive recipients of municipality services. Ultimately, citizens fail to recognise their role in waste management and become unwilling to either pay for service delivery or participate in clean-up campaigns. Dillon and Steifel [ 30 ] further elaborated that people’s engagement involves the deliberate and systematic mobilisation of local communities around issues and problems of common concern. Even LeBan, Perry [ 31 ] attested to the understanding that people gain information, skills, and experience in community involvement that helps them take control of their own lives and challenge social systems. Thus the success of any programme of action depends on the response by citizens, particularly the targeted beneficiaries [ 32 , 33 ]. With that background, this paper is based on experiences by the author during implementation of a water, sanitation and hygiene project in Bindura, Zimbabwe, where the community was engaged to voluntarily clean up there neighbourhoods. The paper provides lessons on how to organise an effective community ward based clean-up campaign [ 34 ].

3. Study area

Bindura ( Figure 1 ) is the administrative capital of Mashonaland Central Province, Zimbabwe. It is located in the Mazowe Valley, about 88 km north-east of Harare. It is made up of 12 wards. According to the 2012 census, Bindura had a population of has 46,275.

During implementation of a water, sanitation and hygiene project, the project team successfully mobilised communities to conduct 27 ward based clean-up campaigns over a period of eight months (February – September 2015). This was done following some ward-based sensitisation on the importance of improved waste management and hygiene issues. The Citizen Supporting Service Delivery (CSSD) concept was used to sensitise the community on the need for participation in waste management efforts. In addition, five waste management groups undertaking various waste recoveries and recycling projects as shown in Figure 2 , were established.

4. Methodology

While considering that a collaborative effort to clean the local environment can send a clear message to community members on the need for them to be good stewards of their environment, sensitisation meetings were conducted in the 12 residential wards of the study area to educate communities on the consequences of waste dumping. Communities were encouraged to take action and be responsible to the environment. The result was a series of community-led ward based clean-ups to clear illegal dumpsites at street corners, shopping centres and open spaces. The clean-ups were initiated and coordinated at ward level by community health facilitators and councillors who were local leaders at ward level. Figure 3 summaries the methodology developed from the experience.

Methodology for organising a clean-up.

4.1 STAGE 1: Planning

4.1.1 organising a committee and supervisors.

Organising a working committee is one of the crucial initial steps when planning to conduct a clean-up campaign. The committee should be led by a coordinator who oversees the activity and is the primary contact person during the event. Committee size depends on various determinants such as tasks to be performed and number of volunteers expected to participate. In general, committee members should be energetic, responsible and able to enforce the schedule while motivating participants to complete their assigned tasks. Choosing a community member with an interest in hygiene and environmental protection issues such as community health facilitator makes sense given their dedication. However, it is critical that each member is comfortable with his/her tasks.

Among the responsibilities of a committee is to (1) set the agenda, (2) secure tools and ensuring their return, (3) mobilise volunteers and (4) solicit contributions and donations. Where a large number of volunteers are expected, consider forming some sub groups and selecting group coordinators. A group coordinator should be a good communicator and able to handle arising situations. To avoid confusion, the committee and coordinators should visit the proposed site for action for familiarisation prior to the clean-up day. On the day of the clean-up, group coordinators must arrive earlier than the rest of the community, at the event meeting point and when possible, identifiable by reflectors.

4.1.2 Setting objectives of a clean-up campaign

To ensure that participants work towards the same outcome, the committee needs to set specific goals and define the scope of the campaign. The scope should clearly detail what is to be done, when, how and by whom. The objectives must be clear, achievable and measurable, with common goals for a clean-up campaign being to remove waste, environmental protection awareness and fundraising.

4.1.3 Setting indicators for success

It is important for the committee to clearly define how success will be evaluated. The working committee will define and list measurable indicators of success. Examples of such indicators are; (1) number and types of participants (e.g., community members), (2) amount/weight of refuse collected (3) approximate area cleaned, (4) time spent and (5) the impact of clean-up activity on the targeted area. It is also important to remember collecting that information on the day of activity. Taking photos before and after the event will assist in measuring the impact of the event.

4.1.4 Setting up the campaign date

Advance planning is crucial for the smooth conducting of a clean-up campaign. Because good planning takes time, it is reasonable to set a date about one or two months in advance. When deciding the date, consider several factors such as; weather, availability of volunteers and availability of waste haulage truck. In most cases, Saturdays are ideal for a community clean-up since most people do not go to work. Beside the availability of participants, 16 clean-up campaigns conducted in Bindura were conducted on Saturdays given the availability of waste haulage trucks from the municipality. Considering a day that coincides with the municipality refuse collection routine in that given area also makes sense. It is reasonable to avoid a day that conflicts with a local event such as a major sporting game, church event or political rally as people will end up having to choose to attend to the more prioritised events. Clean-up campaigns are better attended in the morning especially in warmer weather.

4.1.5 Identifying a place

When determining a place to conduct the campaign, consider various factors such as; (1) the amount of waste, (2) safety of participants (3) location and (4) accessibility. For example, choosing an area that is meaningful or in close proximity to where the volunteers live, work, play or worship makes sense given that people are normally motivated to clean their own area. The proposed area should be easily accessed by a waste hauler and emergency services. It is worthwhile considering an area that needs attention rather than one that is already clean and well maintained. Where the goal of the clean-up campaign is to raise awareness, public places such as the recreational park and shopping centres will have a huge impact. In some instances, the local authority may recommend an area that needs to be cleaned. Visiting the proposed area during the planning stage would assist in refining the project goals and logistical arrangements. For example, where a school health club or youth are volunteers, consider an area that is safe. Creating a site map showing ‘hotspots’, dumpsite would assist in evaluating the results. Once the area has been chosen, decide on a convenient meeting point for participants.

4.1.6 Coordinate the activity with the local authority

Since a clean-up campaign significantly contributes towards the delivery of the local authority’s environmental sustainability commitment, it is important to register your event with them. Beside, local authorities can provide support logistically and financially, and thus it is always worth discussing the proposal with relevant personnel. Assistance may be in form of; (1) recommendations for a clean-up area, (2) permission to access public area, (3) promotion of the event, (4) free waste haulage service and (5) free disposal of collected waste at designated dumpsite. Once permission has been granted and date confirmed by the local authority, the committee can start mobilising volunteers.

4.1.7 Mobilisation of volunteers

While a clean-up campaign can be conducted using any population size, finding volunteers can be the hardest part of this activity. However, it is still the key for conducting a successful event. One of the best practises of a community based clean-up is the participation by all ages despite cultural background and abilities. Involving children would assist in efforts to foster them into adult that are responsible to the environment and who are able to work harmoniously with others ( Figure 4 ). It is important to quantitatively determine the number of volunteers needed and be prepared to accommodate others who might hear about the activity and also want to participate.

Depending on the targeted volunteers, various methods can be used to invite volunteers. Newsletters, notice boards, email, flyers etc. are effective in low density community. Community organisations such churches, community health clubs, school health clubs etc., are also effective ways of inviting volunteers. In Bindura, community health clubs and the local leaders played an important role in mobilising the volunteers. Inviting representatives of relevant stakeholders such government ministries, religious and traditional bodies would be influential in the program and in mobilising volunteers.

Volunteers should be reminded on relevant information such as: location, date and time of the clean-up and clothing (e.g. enclosed footwear, gloves, hat, etc.), a week or two before the event.

4.1.8 Soliciting funding

Where possible, consider mobilising donations in the form of refreshments or financial assistance for the event. Local businesses are normally willing to sponsor clean-ups to demonstrate their commitment to the protection of the environment. In some cases, the organiser might encourage the business community to advertise their business by printing t-shirts for volunteers, which also bears an environmental protection message. In Bindura, the councillors which are local leaders were more involved in soliciting for donations.

4.1.9 Promotion and media coverage

It is important for the community to know what the facilitators are doing. Publicity and promotion of an event depend on various factors such as budget and time. When possible, consider inviting the local media such as local newspaper to ensure that inspiring success stories are published. Environmental protection organisations also normally have interest in such event and would be delighted to promote. In Bindura, a government parastatal, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) supported the clean-ups with awareness raising vehicles as shown in Figure 5 . It is important to recognise that publicity includes promoting the clean-up before, sharing the results and thanking volunteers and sponsors afterwards.

Community briefing and organising before the start of a clean-up.

example of campaign speech about proper waste disposal

Awareness raising during community-led clean-up campaign using a vehicle provided by the environmental management agency in ward 7.

4.1.10 Organising equipment and logistical support

The number and type of tools required vary depending on the area to be cleaned, number of participants and type of waste. Ensuring that there are enough tools for the clean-up is critical to a successful event. It is important to also ensure that all equipment is checked during and after the event. In some cases, volunteers might be required to bring their own equipment for the event. Prior arrangement should be made with the local authority department responsible for solid waste management to determine if a waste haulage truck can be arranged for this day. Where the municipality is not able to collect the garbage, consider alternatives such as a private waste haulage company.

4.2 STAGE 2: Day of the event

thank volunteers for coming

highlight the goals and importance of the campaign

highlight the roles and responsibility of the participant

review of safety and emergency procedures

schedule for the event

site plan review, and

distribution of the equipment.

Group coordinators should be reminded of their roles in assisting their respective working groups. They should encourage their teams to accomplish their assigned tasks and coordinate the removal of the collected litter.

4.2.1 Safety review and compliance

Ensure that all participants have gloves and dust mask. Protective gloves prevent cuts associated with the handling of sharp objects with bare hands. Be clear with your volunteers about how to handle hazardous waste such as pesticide containers, cleaning chemicals containers and sharp objects such broken glass. Closed feet shoes are safer than sandals or flip-flops. Where children will be participating, plan for adequate adult supervision ( Figure 6 ).

4.3 STAGE 3: After the clean-up

After, the clean-up, the project coordinator should thank everyone who volunteered their time and effort. A follow up thank you letters should be written to all stakeholders including sponsors who would have assisted. Remind participants to wash their hands especially when refreshments are to be served. Where a handwashing facility is not available, arrangements must be in place for an alternative facility such as a portable water dispenser and soap.

4.3.1 Disposing of garbage

One of the most important aspects, when organising a community clean-up, is organising for removal of trash. Waste should be removed as soon as possible after the event to prevent the creation of unhygienic conditions and to avoid it becoming an eyesore and an environmental externality ( Figure 7 ). It is the responsibility of the project coordinator to make arrangements with the local authority for the collection of garbage collected. Where the local authority is not able to provide haulage service, prior arrangements should be done for alternative methods such as private companies.

example of campaign speech about proper waste disposal

Community members clearing a dumpsite during a clean-up campaign.

4.3.2 Assessment of the results

It is important to assess the event as soon as possible after it occurs. Success is measured using the indicator listed during the planning stage. A report detailing the number of volunteers (aggregated by sex and age group), hours worked, area covered, illegal dumpsite cleared, weight of waste removed among other indicators should be produced. Including lesson learnt and suggestions should help in improving the next clean-up. It should be remembered to share the results and photographs, where possible, with all stakeholders.

5. Lessons Learnt

Community participation is indispensable to the success of solid waste management at the local level.

Clean-up campaigns offer the residents an opportunity to demonstrate their willingness to do community development work and show that they are good citizens.

Community participation is key to the successful implementation of any initiative towards solid waste management in urban areas.

A clean-up campaign is an effective platform to show communities that waste management is important.

If educated, a community has the power to police each other on littering and waste dumping

Urban communities, are more “reactive” than “proactive”.

The demand for improved solid waste management needs to be facilitated by community groups such as health clubs.

Residents are willing to look after their environment, if educated

6. Conclusion

Lack of awareness and low participation of communities tend to exacerbate solid waste management challenges that are being experienced by the urban population especially the poor communities. People’s attitudes towards waste and understanding of the consequences of poor waste management play a significant role in encouraging their participation in improved solid waste management. By participating in clean-ups, citizens can contribute in creating immediate and long-term solutions for their neighbourhoods. Clean-ups can serve as catalysts for permanent changes in behaviour and attitude as well as encouraging communities to adopt good practices such as reuse and recycling, which have a profound effect on waste management in a community. The experience also showed that organising a clean-up campaign requires careful timeous planning. Overall, it was concluded that not only did the activity serve the practical purpose of cleaning up, but it also created a greater sense of unity and friendship among community members. A clean-up provides community members an opportunity to bond with one another. It also assists to cross or dissolve racial, cultural, ethnic and other established neighbourhood divides. Further, the power of beautification in a clean-up campaign would naturally motivate residents to believe that their problems could be solved. This would then result in a shared responsibility for sustainable management of waste and commons at local level. This activity assisted the community to measure (hypothetical) how much control they had over their lives if they worked together for a common goal. Therefore, communities need to consider clean-up campaigns as ongoing activities that they could turn into neighbourhood tradition.

3 Creative Waste Management Ad Campaigns Attempting To Change Public Behaviour

example of campaign speech about proper waste disposal

Changing public behaviour is difficult… really difficult. This can be helped through public policy that  nudges people to perform the desired action. Want people to encourage safe driving? Fine people if they drive over the speed limit. Want to reduce smoking? Ban it in public areas and whack on a tax. Want people to recycle their plastic bottles? Introduce a paid recycling incentive.

But what happens to public behaviours when no one is watching? When there aren’t any looming speed cameras nor money to be made? In this blog, we’re highlighting three organisations aiming to affect awareness, attitudes, and behavioural change in waste and recycling through some pretty creative advertising campaigns. Do you think the ads will push people to do the right thing when no one is watching?

#1 Talk Dirty To Me In Malmø, Sweden, the municipality introduced talking public bins that respond in a rather risqué manner when one deposits trash. Some of the phrases translate to:

“Come back quickly and do that again.”

“Ooh, yeah, right there.”

“Ahh, that was crazy good.”

“Hmm, more.”

“Little more to the left next time.”

The point of the talking bins is to encourage people to put their trash in the bin by providing a laugh as a reward. Check out the bins in action below (in Swedish – but you’ll certainly get the idea).

#2 New to Aarhus? Here’s what you need to know!

At the height of the moving season in Aarhus, Denmark, thousands of new students are moving in and out of the city. Kredsløb , the organisation that manages waste collection and recycling in the city of Aarhus, invites the public to learn more about the city they’ve just moved to… and perhaps a little about how to manage their bulky waste. Watch video below (in Danish).

#3 – Are disposable spoons socially acceptable?

Using humour and social norms to affect behaviour was the tactic taken by the European Commission in the Be Ready To Change campaign. Thinking about buying single-use plastic spoons? Think again! Watch the video below (in English).

Long and Short Speech on Waste Management in India

In today’s time, waste management is a very important matter for our society. Waste generation is increasing day by day due to a continuous increase in the population of the world. Increase in waste management is affecting the lives of people also. For example, there are many waste disposal regions which are near the slum areas and the people living in those areas are being affected by it and are prone to many types of diseases. Therefore, for living a proper healthy life, waste management is much needed.

Waste is just some type of product that is no longer in use and has come to an end. Often it is said that its life has been spent and that it will not be used anymore. It is the unwanted things people have thrown out of their homes. It is often referred to in other words as "garbage" and "trash." Here we have provided both Long and Short Speech on Waste Management in India and 10 lines for Speech on Waste Management so that students can refer to them as per their needs.

Waste management is a procedure in which unwanted garbage or waste is being dumped in a proper place and in a proper manner by disposing and recycling them to avoid any type of pollution so that people can live a good, healthy and disease free  life. To avoid contamination, waste should be dumped or disposed of in a proper place. Waste management helps people to avoid or eradicate those diseases which are caused by the waste or garbage.

Waste management is considered to be one of the important and mandatory processes to avoid pollution, to avoid diseases which are caused by wastes and to care for the health of the people. With the increase in population, waste generation is also increasing. It leads to an increase in pollution which is an important issue to focus on.

Long Speech on Waste Management

Today, I am here to deliver a Speech on Waste Management In India. Waste management has been a major issue for many years, and since the era of industrialization in the world, this problem has evolved from time to time. It has many damaging environmental and atmospheric consequences. The gasses from these unmanaged waste are very harmful to the atmosphere, causing air pollution, which leads many people to suffer from respiratory problems. This unmanaged waste is one of the causes of global warming. Near the rivers or seas, several factories dispose of their waste in these water bodies and thus generate water pollution. They do not know that the disposal of such toxic waste, such as chemicals, etc., can lead to many diseases and can even be dangerous to creatures living underwater.

The poor state of waste management is known to all of us, and there are hardly any places in the country that use the correct waste disposal system. Unmanaged waste that is not properly disposed of gives birth to a variety of diseases and emissions. There is an immediate need for better management of waste.

Several concerns are resulting from the inefficient handling of waste. Water contamination is caused by the waste that is pumped into the water bodies. Many rural areas do not have access to sufficient toilets, and those with access to a proper drainage system, don’t maintain it well resulting in spills.

We need to follow proper waste management procedures to solve these problems.

The definition of waste disposal or waste management is very clear. It means the substance that is used, excreted or unusable is disposed of.

There are many ways of disposing of waste correctly and they are not harmful to the environment, such as-

(i) Recycling and reusing the usable portion of the discarded item;

(ii) landfills - To dump the everyday waste into the landfills;

(iii) combustion or incineration - To burn the waste material and convert it into gaseous items;

(iv) Plasma Gasification - To break down the molecular bonds of waste;

(v) Waste to Energy - To turn non-recyclable waste into useful products such as heat, electricity or fuel through various processes;

(vi) Composting - To convert biodegradable waste such as the kitchen or garden waste into nutritious food for plants;

(vii) Waste minimization - To break down the molecular bonds of the waste through the immense heat produced by the plasma that is an electrically charged gas.

These strategies will only be effective if we strive to initiate them in our everyday lives. If we want to do something about global warming, then this is a way to help as well.

Now it's time for us to do something about waste management. New waste disposal machines and technologies focused on municipalities should be created.

Short Speech on Waste Management in India

Today, I am here to deliver a Speech on Waste Management. With human population development, new places for human settlements and more factories are needed to meet the increasing population's basic requirements. To increase the degree of productivity, various means of cultivation are then introduced through the use of pesticides and fertilizers. So much more is being done to have a comfortable lifestyle. But do you know what our world earns in exchange for our everyday sustenance? Unfortunately, it's garbage.

Our domestic and industrial waste greatly affects the atmosphere and raises the amount of pollution. So, to minimize waste and handle it efficiently, a few things can be done. We should mainly ensure the garbage is thrown into the dustbin only and not elsewhere. And if the waste is a recyclable item, place it in the recyclable bin rather than in the trash bin. Let us make sure that both the bins are clearly labelled from our point of view. This will make it easier to minimize waste and recycle waste material for the next use while using it as a valuable resource.

In reality, so much old stuff, such as bags and jars, can be recycled at your homes; while broken products can be repaired to reduce waste. It can be very useful for our climate, to reduce the amount of soil, air and water contamination. By recycling old waste, we won't have to rely a lot on natural resources that have been drained by continuous use. Thirdly, it takes a lot of resources to use raw materials to furnish a new item than by recycling old ones. This will mean that we will become more efficient in terms of energy, conserve it and it will also aid in bringing down the cost of products.

10 Lines for Speech on Waste Management

Wastes can cause air and water contamination, and decaying garbage releases toxic chemicals and gases that are absorbed into the air and causes pollution.

Waste management is the method of mankind's disposal of waste for recyclable use.

Municipal waste, which includes household and commercial waste from a city, is a large amount of waste that is processed.

In ancient times, the population of the planet was very small because people mined the earth and buried their waste to dispose of their waste.

Just 43 million of the 622 billion tonnes of waste have been processed, 11.9 million tonnes have been treated and 31 million tonnes have been dumped on large plots.

The principal waste management process is to isolate the waste from its source and then recycle it.

One of the major causes of waste is overpopulation in India, as population growth would lead to an increase in waste.

This threat of waste has also been generated by rapid urbanization without proper planning as there is a major problem of throwing the trash.

Waste treatment plants have been built to efficiently dispose of the waste; as a result, manures and energy are obtained from the waste by individuals.

Many countries have developed these types of plants in which waste is transformed into manure and electrical energy is converted into other waste.

Importance of Waste Management

Waste management is one of the important methods for controlling pollution. It helps in reducing the effects of waste or garbage on the environment, people’s lives, natural resources etc. it makes our atmosphere friendly or we can say that waste management helps in making our surrounding positive. It also includes the reuse and recycling of many objects or resources like cans, papers, glass etc.

There are a lot of things which need to be considered while managing wastes like methods of disposal, environment conditions, transportation of waste, recycling methods, etc. there are different types of waste like solid waste, liquid waste, gaseous waste and hazardous waste. All these need to be managed differently. Waste management can also be considered to be a method which helps in the cleaning of the environment.

Categorization of Wastes

Wastes can be categorized in two parts : organic wastes and inorganic wastes.

Organic Waste - The wastes which can be decomposed easily in the soil and eventually become good fertilizers for plants and trees, are the organic wastes. Organic wastes include food wastes, green wastes, non hazardous wastes, etc. These wastes are good for the growth of crops.

Inorganic Waste - The wastes which do not decompose or take years to decompose are the inorganic wastes. These are the waste which causes soil pollution. The main example of inorganic waste is ‘plastic’ as it takes a lot of years to decompose. Even during rainy seasons, the plastics used to get stuck in drains and sewages and cause flooding. In many places, plastics are being burnt which generates harmful gases which are injurious to human’s lungs.

Methods of Waste Management

Waste can be disposed of through several methods and techniques. Some of them are -

Recycling - The most important method for waste management is recycling. It is a more useful method among others because it doesn’t need any other resources and even utilizes the waste material. It converts the waste products into new products or we can say that it reduces the waste and useless materials.

Landfills - It is considered to be the most common method of waste management. In this process, waste disposal is being done by burying the waste in the land which eventually decomposes over the years.

Composting - Composting is an easy and natural way of waste management. It converts the organic waste into fertilizers.

Conclusion

Now, you must be aware of what waste management is and its need. So should always throw the garbage in a proper way so that it can be managed and handled properly. It is our responsibility to contribute towards the management of waste so that our earth can be pollution free and become a green and healthy society.

FAQs on Waste Management Speech

1. Why is waste management important ?

Waste management is considered to be important as it helps in making our environment better. It helps in the decrease of pollution which is one of the major threats to our environment. Wastes also affect the lives of many people especially those who live near the area of the waste dumping regions. Waste management helps in making the lives of people disease free which are being caused because of these wastes. It eventually helps in the betterment of the health of people.

2. Why is it necessary to dump organic and inorganic waste separately?

It is very important to dump the organic and inorganic waste in separate dustbins because it helps in managing the wastes more properly which contributes towards reducing the environmental pollution. Organic wastes are biodegradable and can be disposed of easily. Whereas, inorganic waste doesn’t dispose off or if it does so, it takes years to do so. Hence, it will be easier and feasible to dump the organic and inorganic wastes separately.

Speech on Recycling of Waste for Students and Children in 800 Words

In this article we have published a persuasive Speech on Recycling of Waste for Students and Children in 800 Words. You can take help from this speech for various types of events in your school or locality.

So, lets start the speech on recycling of waste…

Speech on Recycling Of Waste (800 Words)

Good Morning to Chief guests, all invites and our colleagues. Today I want to express my views on the subject of waste.

If anybody listens to the word of waste suddenly in mind goes towards the garbage and waste which collects in our houses and in company waste material which is not usable and eatable.

But has anybody ever thought about the right use of all this waste? One can generate power and prepare many things after recycling it.

In our daily life, we utilise a range of materials and consumables—many companies. They generate tons of waste daily in each city of India and the same in the world.

All these materials we throw out from us to the dustbin, shops and companies also throw out their waste which generated after manufacturing their ultimate product. All these items are called waste, which we throw in the trash and sell out to any buyer of waste material.

There are different types of waste generated-

1. Industrial waste – This types of waste are generated in the industry mostly who manufacture any product. During the preparation process of the final product, there are several things and chemicals come out or left out which companies throw them.

2. Bio-Medical Waste – Hospitals and healthcare companies generate these types. It contains different kinds of infected materials which can be harmful. After collecting these types of waste, the biomedical management company properly disposes of this.

3. Agriculture Waste – Our country is agriculture base country. They generate daily tons of agriculture waste—the waste which comes from cattle, weed, cow dung and husk. Mostly the villagers and farmers are using this in different purpose. They use the cow dung in making biogas and electricity in many places.

4. Domestic Waste – People also call domestic waste as general waste which they collect from our homes during cooking, cleaning, etc. We throw out this waste, and finally, it is going to a considerable waste collection area for disposal.

5. Commercial Waste – This types of waste generated by the schools, colleges, offices and shops. They recycle them, and we can make later on several useful things. Papers, pencils and many things are being made by the waste only,

Dear friends, now we are coming in recycling of waste material. In a simple word, we all understand that recycling means to create or prepare any other product by using or converting waste.

The important thing is that in recycling we use very less fresh raw material and a significant quantity used from waste. So usage of less fresh raw material reduces the cost of an extra item or object.

The recycling process is unique from all waste items. Recycling of plastic waste done in plastic manufacturing companies. They recycle paper waste in paper manufacturing.

There are many types of waste recycled in those companies, and they create another product. They prepare these products with a mixture of waste newspaper, notebooks, writing pad, cartoons, stationeries, plastic cases, mirrors, dishes, etc.

Dear friends, I can say that these are the recycling.  Waste of paper and cardboard board recycling, Plastic waste recycling, Metal waste recycling, Electric or its devices waste recycling, Glass waste recycling, cloth waste recycling, bricks and its inert waste recycling.

There are many advantages to recycling waste. The first benefits are that it reduces the cost of an extra item and companies gets more benefits and consumers gets items in less price.

The recycling of waste preserves natural types of recourses; for instance, timbre, different minerals and water. This waste recycling prevents the pollutions by less use of new raw material.

The proper use of waste material saves energy. It is a fact and truth that it consume less energy during the recycling process of waste.

The recycling of waste always encourages to protect the ecosystem of our natural and wildlife. It naturally reduced the requirement to develop and produce, harvest or take out fresh materials by exploring or extracting from the earth.

Dear friends, after above a brief introduction and discussion about us, came to know that the recycling of waste is crucial and helpful. It is nature and wildlife-friendly. It promotes the less usage of energy and reducing the cost.

Now we should think about and take a vow to less generation of waste and dispose of properly so they may recycle it for humanity and saving energy and wildlife.

Thanking you…

Campaign Speech Examples

When you think of campaign speeches, the first thing that pops out of your mind is election period– be it a presidential election or a school-associated election. But just like a persuasive speech , you must be able to get your message across the public otherwise, they would never vote for you. Sure, you are famous and well-loved by the public, but what makes you different from the rest of the other renowned and beloved politicians and other student leaders? That is where you need to stand out from the rest of your competitors.

  • Speech Examples
  • Special Occasion Speech

All competitors promise the same thing– programs that will benefit the masses and a better state of living. Take for example the victory of current Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. In the 2016 national elections, he won in a landslide vote. Despite his many controversies and jokes bordering on insults, he is seen as a genuine genuine person who speaks from within (no matter how offensive he may seem). But perhaps what made him win the elections were the promises he made to the Filipino people such as: shifting to a federal form of government, addressing abortion and contraception issues, creating an improved agrarian and tax reform program, and forging a partnership with China while maintaining strong relationships with the United States, among others. Campaign speeches do not only try to persuade the masses to vote for them, but also to do their best to excite, and motivate, and compensate for weaknesses in other parts of the campaign. Good speakers try their best to make it look natural, but truth be told, it is actually harder than it looks. There are some specific techniques that you can apply in order to make your speech more effective. Whatever purpose your campaign speech will be used for, make sure that you deliver it in a way that will convince everyone that you are the right candidate for the job. You may also see  Self-Introduction Speech .

Listed below are some campaign speech examples you can use:

1. delivering your own student council speech.

Speak slowly.  Never, ever rush your campaign speech. If you do so, you might end up not making sense at all. Even when your content is top-notch, but if your delivery and speaking skills are not really good enough, it will not mean a thing, especially to your audience. Research actually shows that people fear delivering a speech more than death itself. It is perhaps because of the anxiety and tension placed on you as you give your speech. To deal with that, just breathe in the middle of your speech. The moment you begin inhaling and exhaling, use that time to recover the words that you are going to say and then, continue your speech.

Talk to the audience like you’re having a conversation . Talk casually, but not too casually. Remember, when you deliver a campaign speech, the audience is not going to be just your friends, but also your colleagues, peers, former instructors, and people with authority or power. Though it does not hurt to crack a joke once a while to lighten the atmosphere, make sure that it is not only the jokes they recall. Speak casually, yet speak in a way that the public’s undivided attention is needed. You may also see orientation speech .

Keep your words simple and direct. Students are known to have a short attention span which makes it a challenge for the candidates to get all their points across without boring the audience halfway. Deliver it in a way that is short and easy enough to make your audience understand all the points that you are trying to emphasize, especially with your promises. You may also see presentation speech .

Read it aloud to see how it sounds.  Best to try and practice your speech in front of a mirror. Try to visualize yourself speaking in front of the student body. Once you’ve done so, rehearse like it is going to be your first and last speech you will be delivering to the students. If ever you need assistance in doing so, it is best to grab a friend to help guide you on the points you should emphasize. You may also see motivational speech .

2. Structuring a Campaign Speech

Tailor your message to your audience in specific ways. Before you start writing, think about the audience you are addressing. Who is this speech for: the students or the general public? Remember, content is king and presentation is queen. Even though there is no right or wrong way in presenting your speech, each type of audience is different that the same campaign speech would have the same expected impact twice. Understand your audience well enough to make adjustments to your speech as to custom-fit the necessary points you wish to deliver towards them.

Outline your speech. All forms of writing has a beginning, middle and end. Outlining your thoughts first will help you stay on track as you write the speech. The beginning needs to catch people’s attention and raise the questions you’re going to answer. The middle needs to provide the answers, and the end connects the answers back to the questions. In very simple terms: You tell them what you’re going to tell them. Then, you tell them. Then you tell them what you told them.

Make your point quickly. Once you begin your speech with a theme or a main idea, go directly with what you are trying to say. For example, if you beat around the bush too much, you will not be going anywhere. You have to convince them to listen to you. There’s a lot of ways to get this done. You can use a story, a challenge, a joke, or just vividly describe a problem. You just need to get the audience’s attention quickly. Earn their attention and don’t expect it to come to you. You may also see informative speech .

Support your theme. Once you’ve got their attention, don’t let go. The middle of your speech needs to explain the issues you raised in the introduction speech and convince people that you can do something about them, but you need to vary the way you tackle the issues.

You want to have a good mix of facts, feelings, and action. If you only talk facts, your audience will get bored. Only talk feelings, and you’ll wear them out. Only talk action, and it invites disbelief, because you haven’t offered enough factual and emotional support for your argument. You may also see thank-you speech

Raise the stakes at the end. The conclusion is just as important as the introduction. It’s the last chance you have to leave an impression, so make sure they remember you by raising the stakes. Make it bigger than that—something that makes them feel weaker for not supporting you and stronger for supporting you. You may also see appreciation speech .

Play to your strengths. Identify which appeals you have on your side and emphasize those aspects of your argument. Should you be lucky enough to have all three, you don’t have much more to do than make sure all the words of your speech are in the right order. However, most arguments are going to be weaker or stronger in one or more areas. You may also see declamation speech .

If your biggest appeal is associational, your argument is less about specific points than it is about you. Design your speech to emphasize your biography and why it makes you trustworthy. People elect a person, not a set of ideas.

If your biggest appeal is emotional, keep your speech short, so that the audience doesn’t notice the logical flaws. Foe example, adjust your energy level to the audience’s. If they’re agitated, start slowly. If they’re bored, then start off at a higher energy level. Always work to an emotional crescendo, however. Never start at the emotional level you want to finish at. You may also see informative speech .

If your biggest appeal is logical, break up the facts with feeling. You can’t risk boring your audience to death, so you need to break up your logical propositions into bite-sized chunks. Think of it as the spoonful of sugar principle—a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down. You may also see welcome speech .

Make your audience understand with clear logical appeals. Logical appeals are actually the strongest appeals, but they are the slowest to take effect. It takes longer to make someone understand a problem than it does to make them mad–or make them believe you’re a part of their group. You may also see farewell speech .

Stoke the passions of your audience with an emotional appeal. Emotional appeals are some of the most powerful appeals, particularly when you want to turn your audience against something or someone.

Whether you end up winning or losing at the end of the day, accept that defeat with grace and humility. Never allow that loss to discourage you in doing better the next time around. Adapt, learn, grow, and observe. Even in victory, there is always room for improvement. The art of persuading others is an art that takes time to master. It is a slow and long process, but you will eventually get there. Keep that head high and walk in confidence! You may also see leadership speech .

Advocacy and Education on Waste Management

Waste management interventions are often hampered by lack of awareness and limited knowledge on resource recovery technologies, poly tools and financial mechanisms. The ability to appropriately and sustainably manage municipal solid waste rests on well-developed and well-build capacity for city officials and other waste management practicioners, as well as environmentally conscious citizens. Therefore, UN-Habitat is developing tools that help increase the knowledge of city officials, and sensitize citizens on their responsibilities.

Towards a Solution

In order to develop the capacity of all waste management practitioners, and to offer the general public and schools effective and sufficient waste education, UN-Habitat is engaging its beneficiaries with the three different approaches, stated below. These activities are carried out under the African Clean Cities Platform (ACCP) and the Waste Wise Cities Campaign (WWCC).

1. Waste Academy:

Target:  City government officials and practitioners related to ACCP and WWCC networks.

Academy participants are offered tailored courses and learning materials, and can also join a Discussion Forum in order to address questions and other issues. The Forums are facilitated by moderators communicating with course participants. Issues faced by member cities are addressed by network and experts from UN-habitat. Through the Academy, member cities also receive assistance for developing project proposals from UN-Habitat, including facilitation of project financing of feasible projects. The main goal of the Academy is to build the capacity of waste management practitioners so they are better equipped make informed decisions and implement interventions for improving waste management in and shifting towards the circular economy.

2. Awareness Toolkit and Guide:

Target:  City authorities and community residents.

The toolkit is a community education and awareness strategy designed by UN-Habitat to promote behavioural change at community level and transform habits and perceptions about waste as a resource. The goal is to foster behavioural change at the community level to achieve sustainable resource and solid waste management.

3. School Programme:

Target:  Teachers and students of pre-primary and primary schools as well as higher education entities within the ACCP and WWCC networks.

Children should acquire appropriate literacy and education on the waste management since childhood, so they can start practicing appropriate waste and resource management in their daily lives. In order to encourage regular waste education activities at school, UN-Habitat has developed the Waste Wise School Toolkits, which includes 5Rs education guidelines, among other materials. Additionally, the programme identifies innovative educational programmes and publicizes them through the WWCC website and through our partner entities. Regional trainings and workshops are also organised, in collaboration with regional associations or Ministries of Education, in order to mainstream the School Programme and incorporate it their strategy. Other programme activities were carried out at schools by youth groups such YPG, JICA volunteers and relevant organisations.

Proper waste management and disposal for a clean, safe environment

Better waste disposal and management starts in every home.

With the waste that we are producing every day, it can be a problem for our health or our environment.

It is simply not enough to rely on our local garbage collectors to do the job. We must also do our part in proper waste management at home.

While we are spending more time at home, let us practice these easy proper waste disposal and management methods we can do at home.

example of campaign speech about proper waste disposal

Your waste should be divided into several categories.

Such as ‘Wet and Dry’, ‘Organic and Inorganic’,  and ‘Recyclable and Non-recyclable’.

Assign separate bins for each waste category.

Effective segregation is important at the source, so by doing this, the disposal of inorganic waste is also more efficient.

You can identify which materials to recycle or reuse and hazardous materials can be easily disposed of.

Special waste such as batteries or broken gadgets should also be separated and labeled properly.

Used cleaning materials & PPEs

Used cleaning materials such as paper towels, tissues, and wipes should be disposed of properly in a bag and discarded safely in a trash container.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face masks and hand gloves should also be disposed of properly after use especially when the PPEs are from homes or businesses with someone who has tested positive for any deadly disease.

There are several steps of discarding these kinds of waste but it is best to separate them from regular garbage.

Also, label your trash bags or containers so collectors will know which are harmful waste.

After handling these kinds of waste, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly.

Also, check with your local government for any specific instructions for wastes that are hazardous.

Recyclables need to be dry and free of any leftover food.

Before recycling make sure to reduce waste by using all the product inside the container and then follow up with cleaning the container.

Some home items like toilet paper rolls, newspapers, kitchen plastics, clean and dry cardboard, and paper boxes can be used for art activities with your children.

Used water and food waste

Conserving water is not only important but necessary to sustain our other needs such as our practice of good hygiene, food safety, and food preparation.

When using water to clean fresh produce or food items, make it a habit to save, store, and recycle water.

You can use stored water to water plants.

When doing laundry, your excess water with detergent can be used for cleaning your bathroom.

Composting is also one idea you can try at home.

A ‘compost’ is any organic material that you can add to the soil to help your plants grow, such as food scraps.

You can use vegetable and fruit waste, grass clippings, dead leaves, or twigs and using the right amount of water.

If you don’t have any space for an outdoor compost pile, you can compost materials indoors using any special type of bin.

These are just some examples of how you can practice proper waste disposal and management at home. Let us know your thoughts about this topic in the comments section of this video .
