Ask an Alim

Is it permissible to write romance novels in islam.

Hi. Since my childhood I always wanted to be a romance writer. I’ve been writing romance novels (with kisses, intimate scene…) and I want to publish it but I think about the Islam and I don’t want to do something bad so I couldn’t publish any book. I have searched about that and I found comments where some people say that is haram but another ones say that is not haram or bad to publish about that and I don’t know what to do. Can you help me?

Waalaykum al-Salam Thank you for your question.

Just like reading novels that contain explicit matter in them is haram (a person can fall into various haram acts), writing along the same lines would be so too. because it would encourage people towards the act and in the process adopt haram means.

best regards, N.S.Jaffery

Reading Romantic Stories

is writing romance novels haram in islam

Is it permissible to read stories that have a romantic/sex aspect in it, meaning that there are descriptions of intimate feelings and touches?

This is evidence that similar stories are lawful if they are for a similar purpose and if they meet the aforementioned restrictions regardless of whether the events were real or imaginary as long as the aim behind them is a good one.

As for the stories that describe unlawful relations between men and non-Mahram (marriageable) women; which instead of warning against such deeds, elicit them and beautify them by using attractive and tempting words and expressions, then there is no doubt that such stories are unlawful.

Allah Says (what means):

• { … not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. } [Quran 5:5] • { … neither [of] those who commit unlawful intercourse randomly nor those who take [secret] lovers. } [Quran 4:25]

The story that you mentioned in the question is unlawful because it depicts some intimate relations, beautifying them to the listener or reader. The unlawfulness becomes more emphatic when there is a description of Zina (fornication or adultery) and its introductions, such as kissing, touching …etc. Such stories fit what Allah describes in this verse. Allah Says (what means): { Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter. } [Quran 24:19]

So, reading such stories excites the libido and the sexual desire, driving the person to sinful thoughts and love. Any story that causes the above is forbidden because means take the ruling of their ends. So any means that lead to a sin is a sin in itself.

Allah knows best.

Is Writing Fiction Haram?

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

There is no harm in writing fiction , be it stories or poems , as long as it is written for a good purpose or for brushing aside evil.

" title="Advertise and Market to Muslims" target="_blank">Ads by Muslim Ad Network

Answering your question, Sheikh Atiyyah Saqr , the late Head of Al-Azhar Fatwa Committee, states:

There is no harm in writing fiction , be it stories or poems, as long as it is written for a good purpose or for brushing aside evil, like stories where animals speak as if they are humans or take on allegorical roles.

The criterion here is that authenticated matters of the religion should be kept intact. Also, this writing should not be taken as a means to an evil end, and no evil consequence should result from this writing.

In Islam, “harm should neither be inflicted nor tolerated” as is stated in the hadith .

Some scholars, however, maintain that it is not allowed to write fiction . Their argument may be that such stories may contain falsified statements and thus are considered a waste of time. To them, these falsified statements lead to evil and should be avoided. They say that one should instead follow the manner of storytelling used in the Quran.

Almighty Allah knows best.

Im a writer. i love writing romance novels. nothing graphic... but. is that haram? my imagination is my skill and my one way to free my mind for a little while. so... is it?

UnknownUser avatar

Here are two extracts taken from Islamic sites:

The Shari'ah does not prohibit story telling - whether fiction or non-fiction. There is nothing in Islam that forbids one from being creative and using their mind to produce material that is purely fantasy.

This could be for educational purposes or entertainment; it makes no difference in Islam.

Creating works of fiction should not be confused with lying because it is clear to the audience that it is fiction.

All such works are typically categorized properly and clearly designated fiction or non-fiction. On the other hand, some works are so fantastical they are undeniably imaginative.

Head of Al Azhar University (Egypt) which is one of the greatest Sunni Islamic Universities in the entire World said that:

“There is no harm in writing fiction, be it stories or poems, as long as it is written for a good purpose or for brushing aside evil. The criterion here is that authenticated matters of the religion should be kept intact. Also, this writing should not be taken as a means to an evil end, and no evil consequence should result from this writing. In Islam, “harm should neither be inflicted nor tolerated” as is stated in the Hadith. Some scholars, however, maintain that it is not allowed to write fiction. Is It Haram to Read Romance Books

Is It Haram to Read Romance Books? Exploring the Islamic Perspectives

Do you think – Is It Haram to Read Romance Books? In this comprehensive article, we will explore Islamic insights on this matter and its implications for moral and good character development.

The world is full of different types of literature, for those who want to consolidate their reading habits while preserving their religious beliefs and values, the question may arise whether reading romance books is haram. In this register, we will review various aspects and perspectives of Islamic education and provide a clear opinion on this matter.

We will explore the pros and cons of reading romance books and shed light on how a Muslim can choose the right entertainment and textbooks while keeping his faith authentic.

Is It Haram to Read Romance Books?

Yes, it’s Haram to Read Romance Books. Because romance before marriage is forbidden in Islam. So naturally the book which leads to pre-marital romance and enjoyment will be haram. This is fitna that has been going on in Muslim society for ages.

Stories, novels, and literature are valid in Islam but there is a limit. Just as Islam does not approve of romantic stories or romance, it is also not halal to read books of open romance.

But if the romance between husband and wife is promoted then reading such books will not be haram. Muslim youths can read books on romance with their beloved partner according to Quran and Sunnah.

Opinions of scholars

Whether reading romance books is haram depends on their content. If they contain anything that contradicts reality and the principles of Islam, it will not be permissible to read them. You can say that we read them only for entertainment, to pass the time. But entertainment is not allowed which is haram and time is a very precious thing for a believer.

Abu Hurairah – may Allah be pleased with him – said that the Messenger of Allah – may God bless him and grant him peace – said that one of the signs of a person’s perfection in Islam is that he abandons what is not necessary for him. – Jame at-Tirmidhi 2239).

And you talked about science fiction, history, and mythology, they are often written about blasphemous subjects which are in conflict with Islam. In many cases, it is the ’cause’ of the loss of faith and belief and leads to atheism.

Allah Ta’ala says in the Holy Qur’an, “There is a person among people who buys meaningless and useless stories so that he (people) can be kept away from the path of Allah Ta’ala based on their ignorance, he takes it as a laughing stock, a mockery, a joke.” ; For them is a humiliating punishment. (Surah Luqman: 06)

Cultural Relevance and Moral Values

Romance books can vary greatly in content, ranging from wholesome stories promoting love and understanding to those laden with explicit scenes. Scholars emphasize that literature promoting moral values and respect for Islamic ethics is likely to be more acceptable than content that contradicts these principles.

Intent and Impact

The intention behind reading romance books plays a vital role. If the intent is to seek entertainment while maintaining modesty and a clear conscience, many scholars argue it may be permissible. However, if the content incites lust, romanticizes forbidden relationships, or distracts from religious duties, it could be deemed haram.

Is it haram to read Islamic storybooks?

If the book of stories and novels contains anything that contradicts the principles of reality and Islam, then it will not be permissible to read it.

And if there is no such thing; Rather, if there is language learning, literary practice, development of humanity, character improvement, self-criticism, social reform, patriotism, and beneficial things related to Islam and faith, then reading all those stories and novels is not prohibited. Such stories and novels will then be considered as examples and similes.

What is forbidden to read love books?

Yes, reading love books is forbidden. Because love, in general, is haram, so love novels are also haram. So if you are a practicing Muslim you can refrain from reading these supposedly halal novels like Kashem bin Abu Bakr.

If you read them, you can fall under the influence of Satan. You may also want to fall in love with a beautiful girl or boy.

Maybe you think that I am not doing anything bad, I am in a relationship with a good-hearted boy or girl, and I will marry him in the future, so what is the problem with love? Whenever you think like this, Iblish sir will be happy with you and encourage you to do such things. It will count.

Reading Romance–Erotica with One’s Spouse

Shaykh abdurragmaan khan gives the ruling on reading romance–erotica with one’s spouse..

Is it halal or makruh to read romance or erotic stories with one’s wife?

Thank you for your question.

The reading of romantic or erotic novels essentially leads one to draw images of romance or sexual relations to mind. If, when reading such stories, each spouse draws an image of the other to mind, then the reading of such novels will be permissible. If, however, the reading of these erotic encounters causes one or both of the spouses to imagine having relations with other than his or her spouse, then this would not be permissible as it constitutes intentional reflection upon haram. Yes, thoughts that appear unintentionally in ones mind are overlooked, but this is not the case with intentional thoughts.

In his Adhkar , Imam al-Nawawi said, “Thoughts that are established or does not settle in one’s mind are overlooked by the agreement of the scholars. This is so, since he has no control over them and there is no way for one to avoid it completely.” Accordingly, thoughts that are entertained or intentionally brought to mind will not be overlooked and one would be held accountable for that.

And Allah knows best.

Reading fiction and watching science fiction movies

Publication : 01-06-1999

Praise be to Allah.

If these stories include lies, such as Darwin’s theory (evolution), and other things that are contrary to the facts stated by Islam and the facts of natural science, then the Muslim should avoid them, and keep himself busy with something that will be of use to him, such as learning good things or doing righteous deeds or reading true stories and historical accounts and so on. Many of the movies and novels that are known as “Science Fiction” include a lot of kufr, such as putting life and death in the hands of some created being, giving creatures the ability to create from nothing, saying that scientists in laboratories can create from nothing, making inanimate things come alive, creating life from a fossil that has been dead for many millenia, or travelling to the future then coming back to the present. All of this is impossible, and no one knows the unseen except for Allaah. Some of these novels and movies also include clear contradictions of historical facts that are mentioned in the Qur’aan and Sunnah, such as man’s creation and his life on earth. When the Muslim indulges in reading these books or watching these movies, it shakes his belief or at the very least wastes his time and keeps him busy with something that is of no benefit to him. Some people claim that this is just entertainment and a way of passing time, but entertainment is not permitted if it is haraam, and the Muslim’s time is too precious to be wasted on such trivial things. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “One of the signs of a person being properly committed to Islam is that he leaves alone that which does not concern him.”
