Fresh Solution: Zinger XD Singlespeed Adapter Kit

One of the favorite projects we—and many other bike mechanics—like to take on is the classic singlespeed conversion. It’s nice to strip something complicated down and create something that’s elegantly simple. And the makers of bike things (sometimes referred to as the “Bicycle Industry”) had us covered for a long time with Shimano cassette spacers, single Shimano-splined hubs and a wide variety of chain tensioning devices. Until SRAM’s XD driver, there wasn’t really a challenger to Shimano’s tried and true cassette freehub bodies (sure, Campagnolo has their thing, but that’s pretty niche, and limited to road/cross). The XD is being widely used by the likes of Hope, DT Swiss, Industry Nine, Chris King, American Classic and more. However, if you’ve got a fancy wheelset with one of those hubs and want to and want convert to singlespeed you’ve been SOL… until now.

Adapter kit shown installed on a hub

The  Problem Solvers Zinger   features some creative…problem solving to allow riders and mechanics to run a single cog on their XD hubs. Here’s a bunch of pictures that show how it works (click the dots to scroll through the installation process):

1. A beefy, CNC machined holder mates nicely to the SRAM XD splines. It's a 6-bolt disc pattern.

The holder is being placed on the driver of the hub

2. The XD Driver nut threads on using common SRAM/Shimano cassette lockring tools.

The hub is tightened with a wrench

3. 6-bolt pattern spacers are used to fine tune the chainline.

Spacers are then installed on the hub

4. Two Problem Solvers 6-bolt compatible cogs are included (18 and 20 tooth) and a complete array of different tooth counts for customization.

A cog is installed on the hub

5. Extra long disc rotor bolts hold the assembly together.

Rotor bolts are used to secure the adapter

Voila! To complete the conversion some method of chain tensioning is required, whether that be a feature of your frame’s design or an auxiliary tensioner. BONUS: if you’re a fan of having choices, you can configure your spacer / cog selection to include two cogs on the rear, providing you with two different singlespeed options on one bike.

The installation of the adapter kit is complete.

Frostbike ’17: Turn your XD freehub into a single speed with Problem Solvers Zinger

problem solvers single speed kit

Are you single speed curious? Did your bike come with adjustable dropouts and you want to try out single speed riding without investing in a new hub or wheel? For years, there has been an easy fix. Simply find some freehub spacers, a single speed cog, and a lock ring and you’re good to go. Then XD freehubs came along. Don’t get me wrong – they are awesome when it comes to XD compatible cassettes. But there also wasn’t a way to make them into a single speed without purchasing another Shimano freehub that is compatible with your hub.

To give riders another option, and a chance to dabble in single speed riding while keeping your current XD freehub, Problem Solvers has, well, solved the problem. Their new Zinger single speed kit will easily convert your XD freehub into a single speed carrier and it has a ton of adjustability for chainline…

problem solvers single speed kit

Sold as a complete kit, the Zinger includes all of the parts you will need to make the single speed conversion including the carrier, spacers, extra long bolts, and an 18 and 20t cog.

problem solvers single speed kit

With the 20t cog in place, the kit weighs 135g all in and sells for $74.99.

problem solvers single speed kit

Installation is straight forward and starts with placing the 6 bolt carrier on the splines at the base of the XD driver. The lockring/cap is then placed on top and threaded into place using a standard cassette lock ring tool. This clamps down on the carrier keeping everything in place.

problem solvers single speed kit

From there you simply arrange the included spacers around the chosen cog to dial in your chainline. There should be more than enough adjustability to dial in the proper chainline for just about any bike – though it is a bit more tedious than other single speed set ups due to the 6 bolts. My advice is to just use three bolts and only snug them down  during the installation process only. You’ll probably have to install and remove the cog a few times to get the spacing perfect. After you’ve figured out the correct position for the cog, install the remaining three bolts and torque everything down.

problem solvers single speed kit

Even though it does take a bit more work to set up, I dig the end results. Once all of the bolts are tight, the cog is rock solid and there’s no way for it to dig into the freehub body like stamped cogs tend to do on aluminum Shimano freehubs. Compatible with any 6 bolt cogs, if you need a size other than 18 or 20, Problem Solvers offers them in 16-22t. In this case I opted for a 32 – 20 for the Advocate Hayduke in 27.5+ which seems to be the ideal ratio for me.

problem solvers single speed kit

This bike is now all the things a single speed should be – quiet, simple, and light, which is probably why I like it so much. Certainly one of my favorite builds for the Hayduke yet.

Sick. I’m actually at Frostbike and I haven’t had the opportunity to see this. Thanks Q and bikerumor for being part of the problem.

thesteve4761

Where exactly are they causing a problem?

Ck

I need this. I swap freehubs on my Hope hubs pretty regularly to switch between geared and SS. While Hope makes it pretty easy this is still easier.

J-dog

While my SS days are behind me, good to know this is out there.

fred

much more likely to go xd hub because of this.

mtbrider

So how much is it?

Zach Overholt

That was one of the things which wasn’t included in the press info so I had to wait until Frostbike to find out. Just updated with weight and price – $74.99.

Marty Larson

Using this kit to convert my Hayduke as well. Plump single speeds for the win!

Reverse Components XD Single Speed Kit w/Cog

www.universalcycles.com

Yeah - that really is the preferred way for SS. Microspline - no support. XD - bodge.

Completely agree. That's why I ran the Zinger kit. If you are committed to SS an HG freehub is a better solution. I was testing it out and didn't want to spend the whatever it was i9 wanted at that point. My next set of wheels were HG to run SS.

AdamR83

22:14 is a pretty nice ratio, depending on your wheel size...

Problem Solvers Zinger SRAM XD SS Conversion Kit

dont most freehubs cost less than $99?

Ogre

It's a bummer that all these interfaces require custom bits. Cogs are super common and dirt cheap. Also... 14t? I'd need to run a 22-23t front ring.

I have used the problem solver kit. It is overall pretty decent. It can get a little creaky though. I had i9 wheels so a freehub was a decent amount more than $99.

I'll just keep buying hubs with old school splines. Maybe eventually all the good hubs will drop support and I'll have to figure this out. For the moment I just use the 1 XD hub I own on a geared bike.

I’m guessing/hoping if microspline catches on, people like Endless, Wolftooth, and the likes will produce cogs. I’ve got enough regular cogs to last a lifetime, so hopefully not. Guess worst case, I buy a couple DT hubs and I’m covered for life.

blaklabl

I have an XD Zinger kit I’d be willing to sell if anyone is interested. Used once, realized SS was no longer for me.

Staindsoul4life

Kind of a stretch based on how long ago this was posted, but any chance you're still selling the SS kit? I'm definitely interested.

its an old thread but has anyone had a bad experience with the PS zinger kit? I picked one up recently and now heard they can strip the freebody. I haven't installed mine yet.

I never had that issue with mine. It was creaky though. I would just get an HG freehub these days.

BansheeRune

30:14 works quite nicely in the Rocky Mountains. Hmmm.

Single or Dingle? A Wheels Manufacturing SOLO-XD Single Speed Conversion Kit Review

Single or Dingle? A Wheels Manufacturing SOLO-XD Single Speed Conversion Kit Review

By: Josh Weinberg September 8, 2023

problem solvers single speed kit

In our current climate of cycling innovation, where maximizing gear range and number of cogs is top priority for many, singlespeeders are often left out. Teased earlier this year at Sea Otter Classic and available for sale today, Wheels Manufacturing flips the script with the SOLO-XD Single Speed Conversion Kit , which offers a reliable solution for converting both XD and XDR driver-equipped hubs to carrying a single gear. Josh recently received a SOLO-XD kit and, below, outlines the installation process and a review after riding with a “dinglespeed” setup for a couple of weeks.

problem solvers single speed kit

I’ve been riding singlespeed mountain bikes for nearly twenty years. For me, singlespeeding is equal parts efficiency, fitness-boosting, and maybe a bit sadism. It’s also about community, as I’ve met some of my favorite people and best friends through lively international singlespeed factions; just check out our concurrent SSUSA piece and previous SSAZ coverage to see what it’s all about.

But, like the discipline itself, component options have been simple and limited. Gear ratios and chain tension methods aside, most folks not using a singlespeed-specific rear hub ( like the original from Pau l) rely on a standard HG freehub body, single (or dingle) HG-compatible cog, spacers, and lock ring. There are plenty of singlespeed cog options for adding extra bling to your whip from brands like Endless Bike Co and Wolf Tooth , or if you’re like me and want to go the bougie route, Boone Technologies makes theirs out of titanium.

While not the first of its kind, the new Solo XD Conversion Kit, available today from Wheels Manufacturing , is an all-in-one solution for enabling any XD or XDR hub to carry a single (or double) gear.

Wheels MFG Solo-XD

With the Solo-XD, Wheels MFG entered the singlespeed conversion space with a kit specifically designed for XD and XDR-equipped hubs. According to the Colorado-based component manufacturer, “The impetus for the SOLO-XD was there are a lot of people who like riding XD/XDR wheelsets, but there were very few options for [singlespeed convertors] that are simple to install, remove, maintain and adjust on market. We designed the SOLO-XD hub sleeve and cogs in a way so they would not bind on themselves or hub bodies like we have seen on some other hub style configurations.”

Sold as a complete kit, the Solo-XD includes a 7075 aluminum carrier sleeve and 18T cog, 6061 1.8mm spacer for XDR hubs, five additional 6061 spacers of varying thicknesses, and a lock ring. Wheels MFG sent me their limited edition 18T cog colorway that was finished by Ashley and an additional 20T because I mostly run that cog size in the rear with a 30T chainring up front.

I asked Wheels MFG if this kit could be installed as a dinglespeed – with two different sized cogs on the same carrier – to which they replied “well, we haven’t had anyone do it yet, but you should give it it a try!” While not something I’ll utilize each ride, it will be nice to have a higher gear for terrain that isn’t as punchy as the local trails I ride most often. It’s a simple trailside change with sliding dropouts, but certainly not as convenient with other methods of chain tensioning.

Currently, there are three cog sizes available for the Solo-XD (16T, 18T, and 20T) in seven anodized colors (black, red, orange, teal, blue, purple, and green). More cog sizes will likely be available in the future.

During my time installing and riding with the kit over the past couple of weeks, I noticed a couple of additional benefits left out of Wheels MFG’s website/marketing materials. First, the cogs are machined with a narrow-wide tooth profile. I haven’t seen this before on singlespeed cogs, but theoretically it’ll help with chain retention and enable use of thinner 12-speed chains (more bling, yay!). Additionally, since the system is designed around the XD driver, swapping between geared and singlespeed would be fairly simple granted a derailleur hanger was attached or available for the bike’s dropouts. With no cables involved and as both use the same driver, you’d just need to slide on a cassette, and attach an AXS derailleur, shifter, and chain.

Solo-XD Installation

Installation was a breeze and only required a couple of tools commonly found in most mechanics’ toolboxes – grease, 44mm 16-notch BB wrench, and chain whip. First, make sure to grease inside and out on the carrier ring, then slide it onto the hub body with the stepped portion facing the hub. If installing on an XDR hub, be sure to install the 1.8mm spacer onto hub prior to the carrier ring. Next, slide the end spacer over the stepped portion of carrier ring.

Then it is time to install cogs and spacers, which might take a little trial and error to achieve a straight chain line. As previously mentioned, I wanted to try using two cogs rather than one and, due to the built in outer edge on these Wheels MFG cogs, I was able to stack them together on the carrier ring rather than using a 1mm spacer to create separation. With the help of my eagle-eyed mechanic, Tristan of Ride Dialed , we were able to achieve a decently straight chain line in both cog positions and there is still plenty of room for the chain to clear without rubbing on the outboard smaller cog. Once cogs and spacers are in place, tighten lock ring to 40Nm with a 44mm bottom bracket wrench.

To remove the kit, basically go through the installation steps in reverse with a chain whip wrapped clockwise around the cog to hold it in place. Removal might be necessary after the first couple rides, should the chain line need refinement.

While us singlespeeders mostly enjoy riding in shadows and dark sewers, the Solo-XD is a welcome addition to this oft-overlooked corner of the cycling industry. This was a fun one to experiment with and I hope my overview was informative. Let us know your preferred method of singlespeeding in the comments and if the Solo-XD is something you plan to try. And thanks as always to Ride Dialed for the assist!

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.
