The Top 20 Online Proofing Tools For Creative Teams in 2024

  • February 12, 2024

Creative teams have high standards to maintain at all times. To help them produce the best work and ensure everyone is on the same page, they must use the best online proofing tools. That’s where this article comes in.

Online proofing tools are web-based solutions that provide a collaborative platform for creative, marketing, and publishing projects to be edited, uploaded, shared, and reviewed. Online proofing software is usually available with a wide range of fea tures. However, all of these tools share the ability to permit simultaneous collaborations on creative designs and publishing projects..

Using a good online proofing tool can help your creative team manage projects , and ensures they are error-free and meet their deadlines. What’s more, because online proofing tools are web-based, they allow your collaborators to access your projects easily, at any time of the day, and from any part of the world.

Online proofing means your team can make real-time changes where necessary and can then submit their edits as a file, through the online proofing platform. This saves them from having to send project pieces, separately, over a (possibly unreliable) file sharing service.

Learn more about the best online proofing tools on the market to help you team tackle creative projects in 2024.

Our support team is here to help you daily via chat, WhatsApp, email, or phone between 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. CET.

Yes! Our personal statement editors can help you reduce your word count by up to 25%. You can choose to receive this feedback through direct edits or suggestions in comments – just select your choice when you upload your personal statement.

Our APA experts default to APA 7 for editing and formatting. For the Citation Editing Service you are able to choose between APA 6 and 7.

It is not necessary to reserve a time slot for your edit. As soon as your document is ready to be proofread, you can upload it at any time via our website . Based on your chosen deadline, our editor(s) will then proofread your document within 24 hours, 3 days, or 7 days.

If you are unsure about the availability of our services or are planning to upload a very large document (>13,000 words) with a 24 hour deadline, we recommend that you contact us beforehand via chat or email .

Scribbr is following the guidelines announced by the WHO (World Health Organization). As an online platform, all our services remain available, and we will continue to help students as usual.

Can I still place an order? Will my order be completed within the deadline? Yes, you can still place orders and orders will be delivered within the agreed upon deadline. Scribbr is an online platform – our proofreading & editing services are provided by editors working remotely from all over the world. This means Scribbr can guarantee that we will process your order with the same diligence and professionalism as always. The same holds true for our Plagiarism Checker .

Can I still contact customer support? Yes. Our support team is available from 09.00 to 23.00 CET and happy to answer any questions you might have!

Yes, if your document is longer than 20,000 words, you will get a sample of approximately 2,000 words. This sample edit gives you a first impression of the editor’s editing style and a chance to ask questions and give feedback.

How does the sample edit work?

You will receive the sample edit within 12 hours after placing your order. You then have 24 hours to let us know if you’re happy with the sample or if there’s something you would like the editor to do differently.

Read more about how the sample edit works

When you upload a large document (20,000+ words), we will ask your editor to send a sample edit of approximately 2,000 words as soon as possible. This sample edit gives you a first impression of your editor’s editing style and what you can expect from the service. You will receive it within 12 hours after uploading your order.

Why do we provide you with a sample edit?

We always aim to make you 100% happy, and Proofreading & Editing is a complex service. We want to make sure that our editing style meets your expectations before the editor improves your entire document.

Our editors are trained to follow Scribbr’s academic style . However, your preferences might deviate from our conventions. The sample edit gives you the chance to provide feedback – you can let us know if you’re happy with the sample or if there’s something you would like the editor to do differently.

Once your editor has completed your sample edit, you will receive a notification via email. You have 24 hours to reply to this email and provide us with feedback. If we receive your feedback in time, your editor will go the extra mile and adjust the edit according to your input.

What sort of feedback can you give?

Give us feedback that will help your editor meet your requirements. For example:

  • “I am completely happy. The editor can continue editing like this.”
  • “I forgot to mention that my school has the following rules for gendered pronouns.”
  • “The editor changed the spelling of a technical term, but my professor spells it differently. Please keep the original spelling of this term.”

The  Structure  and Clarity Check can only be purchased in conjunction with Proofreading & Editing . Providing feedback on structure and clarity requires extensive knowledge of the text, which the editor acquires while proofreading and editing your text.

However, our Paper Formatting Service,   Citation Editing Service and Plagiarism Checker can be purchased separately.

Yes, Scribbr will proofread the summary in another language as well.

Who will proofread my summary?

If your document contains a summary in a different language, we will send this part to another editor who is a native speaker of that language. The editor will check your summary, applying our standard Proofreading & Editing service.

If you ordered any additional services, such as the Structure Check or Clarity Check, the editor will not apply them to your summary. This is because the summary is a translation of your abstract – you already receive Structure and Clarity feedback on the text in the original language. Therefore, when proofreading your summary, the editor will focus on making sure your language and style is correct.

How does it work?

We will create a new assignment within your order and send you a confirmation email. This also means that you will receive a separate email/SMS notification from us when the editor has finished proofreading your summary. Once your summary is proofread, you can download it via your Scribbr account and read the editor’s feedback.

Yes, we can provide a certificate of proofreading.

As soon as the editor delivers the edit, you can email us at [email protected] to request a certificate.

  • You send us your text as soon as possible and
  • You can be flexible about the deadline.

Please note that the shorter your deadline is, the bigger the risk that your previous editor is not available.

If your previous editor isn’t available, then we will inform you immediately and look for another qualified editor. Fear not! Every Scribbr editor follows the  Scribbr Improvement Model  and will deliver high-quality work.

However, every editor has a slightly different editing style, so you may notice small inconsistencies in editing choices. As with every proofreading order, be sure to carefully review your editor’s changes and suggestions as you finalize your text to ensure that everything is as you want it.

The fastest turnaround time is 12 hours.

You can upload your document at any time and choose between three deadlines:

At Scribbr, we promise to make every customer 100% happy with the service we offer. Our philosophy: Your complaint is always justified – no denial, no doubts.

Our customer support team is here to find the solution that helps you the most, whether that’s a free new edit or a refund for the service.

Every Scribbr order comes with our award-winning Proofreading & Editing service , which combines two important stages of the revision process.

For a more comprehensive edit, you can add a Structure Check or Clarity Check to your order. With these building blocks, you can customize the kind of feedback you receive.

You might be familiar with a different set of editing terms. To help you understand what you can expect at Scribbr, we created this table:

View an example

Scribbr not only specializes in proofreading and editing texts in English , but also in several other languages . This way, we help out students from all over the world.

As a global academic writing proofreading service, we work with professional editors  – all native speakers – who edit in the following languages :

This way, you can also have your academic writing proofread and edited in your second language!

Please note that we do not offer Finnish proofreading, but students can still upload English papers on scribbr.fi .

Yes, regardless of the deadline you choose, our editors can proofread your document during weekends and holidays.

Example: If you select the 12-hour service on Saturday, you will receive your edited document back within 12 hours on Sunday.

The footnotes are not automatically included in the word count.

If you want the language errors in your footnotes to be corrected by the editor, you can indicate this in step 3 of the upload process . The words in the footnotes are then automatically added to the total word count.

Need help with your references?

  • If you use the APA reference style, you can use our free APA Citation Generator or the articles about APA in our Knowledge Base.
  • If you’d like us to check your references for consistency, you can use our Citation Editing Service .

To keep our prices competitive, we do not offer a free trial edit. However, if your document is longer than 30,000 words, we are happy to provide you with a sample edit of 2,000 words to ensure you are satisfied with the editor’s editing style.

Rest assured, our customers are very satisfied with our proofreading services. We’re proud that they have rated us with an excellent 4.6 on Trustpilot. In the unlikely event that you have a less positive experience, we’ll solve that with our 100% happiness guarantee !

After your thesis has been edited , you will receive an email with a link to download the edited document.

The editor has made changes to your document using ‘ Track Changes ’ in Word.  This means that you only have to accept or ignore the changes that are made in the text one by one.

It is also possible to accept all changes at once. However, we strongly advise you not to do so for the following reasons:

  • You can learn much by looking at what mistakes you have made.
  • The editors do not only change the text, they also place comments when sentences or sometimes even entire paragraphs are unclear. We therefore advise you to read through these comments and take into account your editor’s tips and suggestions.
  • Because of the many changes, sometimes there may be double spaces, double periods, or other minor mistakes in a sentence. Checking the changes one by one, you can easily detect these minor errors.

We have written a manual in which we explain step by step how ‘Track Changes’ works.

Check out an example

Our editors are very experienced and will do their utmost to correct all errors in your thesis .

However, with our current rates, an editor can only check your thesis once. This may cause an editor to overlook an error. We can therefore not guarantee that your thesis is 100% error free after you have had your thesis edited.

The editor uses ‘Track Changes’ in Word when editing your thesis.

Don’t know how this works? Then read the following guide  in which we explain step by step how ‘Track Changes’ works.

No, we do not provide you with a clean copy. You will always receive a file edited with tracked changes .

We do this for two main reasons:

  • In most papers, there are sentences that the editor cannot edit without additional information from the author. In these cases, your editor will provide guidance but leave you to implement the feedback. If we were to simply accept the changes for you, then these issues would be left unaddressed.
  • We believe students should be accountable for their work. Our editors can correct language errors and coach you to be a better writer. However, the end product belongs to you and should reflect your ideas and decisions.

All Scribbr editors are language experts with interests in different subject areas.

You can indicate your field of study when you upload your document . We’ll make sure that the editor who proofreads your work is familiar with your discipline and its specialist vocabulary.

These are the fields of study you can choose from, and examples of the main subjects in each field:

  • Business and Management: Business Administration, Hotel Management, Accountancy, Marketing
  • Economics: Business Economics, Econometrics, Finance
  • IT and Engineering: ICT, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, Civil Engineering, Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering
  • Natural and Life Sciences: Biomedical Sciences, Biology, Chemistry
  • Geography, Agriculture and Environment: Ecology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Studies, Urban Planning
  • Health and Medical Sciences: Medicine, Obstetrics, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Dentistry
  • Arts and Humanities: Philosophy, History, Literature, Cultural Studies, Theology
  • Law and Policy: Law, Political Science, Public Policy, Human Rights
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences: Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Sciences

Editors don’t have to be experts in the content of your paper, but they do know how to present it in the best way possible! Our goal is to improve your writing and give you feedback on the readability, structure, logic, and clarity of your text. We know from experience that the most effective editors are specialists in language and academic writing.

We’ve carefully selected and trained all of our editors to proofread theses and other academic documents. Once they’re qualified, we continue to carefully monitor their work to make sure we always deliver the highest quality .

proofing online software

Nowadays, being efficient at work has become an imperative across all industries. And  3 in 4 people say they would create better work if they spent less time managing feedback.

With online proofing software , teams can share files, collect actionable feedback, and collaborate with your stakeholders until they get approval. Plus, they make the whole approval process a lot smoother and faster.

But before we look at our top 12 proofing tools, let’s talk about the five most important features of online proofing software.

Get faster feedback with online proofing

Bring files, versions, feedback, and approvals together with Filestage.

The top five features to look out for when comparing online proofing software

Looking to invest in online proofing software for the first time? Then you’ve come to the right place!

Proofing tools are packed with features to make life easier for you, your teammates, and your reviewers. If you’re used to plain old email, you may find all these features a bit overwhelming. So to help you choose wisely, here’s a quick roundup of the top five features to look out for.

1. Project workflow management

The first thing to look at when comparing digital proofing software is the interface itself. When reviewing content, you’ll be inviting a mixture of teammates and reviewers to use your online proofing software. So you want it to be as intuitive as possible.

Once you’ve covered the overall aesthetics, check what kind of organizational options an online proofing tool offers, like:

  • Folders –  for organizing content reviews by client or business unit
  • Projects –  for keeping all your different file types in one place
  • Sections –  for grouping files within a project
  • Review steps –  for making sure the right people review your content in the right order

2. File sharing and document version control

Next up, you’ll want to look at the process of sharing files and managing versions across a range of proofing tools.

Ideally, you should be able to:

  • Upload an unlimited number of files and versions
  • Share your content with an unlimited number of reviewers
  • Share videos, documents, images, and other file formats in one place
  • Instantly revisit previous versions and comments
  • Compare versions side by side to see what’s changed

3. Collaborative comments

One of the biggest features of an online proofing tool is the ability to get collaborative feedback on your content.

Here are a few must-haves for any online proofing software:

  • Add comments to any file format, including videos and live websites
  • Create timestamps for videos instead of writing them out one by one
  • Draw annotations and add attachments to make feedback clearer
  • Use comments as a to-do list to create the next version

4. Automations

Now for the magic dust that will really speed up your review and approval process – and an absolute essential when it comes to enterprise online proofing.

The best proofing tools offer a range of automations to minimize manual work in your review workflow. That means less time chasing reviewers or checking who’s approved what, and more time getting things done.

Here are a few popular automations that the best online proofing software offers:

  • Set due dates to send reminders if people forget to give clear and actionable feedback
  • Change a file’s status to “Needs changes” when it’s ready to be worked on
  • Change a file’s status to “Approved” and start the next review step if everyone is happy

5. Integrations

Another key feature for enterprise online proofing is integrations! The best design and document proofing software make it easy to connect your review and approval process with your existing tech stack.

Here are a few ways this can help you and your team save time:

  • Notify your teammates in Slack when there’s a new file for them to review
  • Get notifications in Microsoft Teams whenever someone approves your file or requests changes
  • Assign tasks in Asana with a due date so reviewers remember to give feedback

The 12 best proofing tools for fast and organized content reviews

Here’s a roundup of the 12 best proofing tools:

  • Filestage – best online proofing software
  • Screenlight
  • ConceptShare
  • Kollaborate

Let’s take a closer look.

1. Filestage – best online proofing software

Filestage is an online proofing software that helps you share, discuss, and approve all your files, all in one place. It offers agencies and marketing teams a better way to manage digital projects and collect in-context feedback.

Here’s how it works:

  • Upload your files and add a due date
  • Invite your reviewers or send them a link (they don’t need an account)
  • Let reviewers add their feedback and discuss ideas in the comments
  • Turn the comments into a to-do list so you can tick off edits for the next version
  • Upload the new version to Filestage

Filestage integrates with popular communication and management tools like Slack, Asana, and Microsoft Teams. On top of that, it offers plugins for Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, effectively putting video proofing software inside your favorite video editing tools.

And if you prefer to create your own integrations, you can connect Filestage using Zapier, Make, and other integration platforms.

2. ProofHub

ProofHub  is an online proofing software that makes it easy for managers of creative teams to streamline their team’s review and approval process by giving them a central place to share files, review them, annotate and mark changes in those files, and approve them once done.

It integrates with third-party apps like Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and Box to give creative teams a central place to access and store files.

3. Screenlight

Screenlight  aims to help creative teams untangle feedback and swiftly drive video projects forward. This online proofing software allows its users to review videos, audio files, or images that turn into preview files viewable just about anywhere.

When a reviewer starts typing a comment, this online proofing tool automatically pauses the video and grabs a precise timecode. This way users spend less time guessing where clients want to make changes and more time getting the project done.

Screenlight

4. Workfront

The goal of  Workfront  is to connect enterprises and help multidisciplinary teams collaborate in the digital age. This online proofing tool specializes in enterprise project management, and can take several weeks to set up.

With Adobe Workfront marketing teams can build actionable strategies and launch campaigns while delivering personalized experiences at scale.

Workfront

Lytho  is an online proofing software that empowers creative teams to foster stronger collaborations with both clients and stakeholders. The teams can do that by building creative workflows to efficiently manage all important aspects of the project, including everything from stakeholders and their resources.

6. ConceptShare

ConceptShare is an online proofing tool that’s aimed at creative and marketing teams. Its goal is to empower these teams to deliver content faster and at lower costs. However, keep in mind that some more advanced features can be pretty difficult to learn.

Conceptshare

7. SyncSketch

SyncSketch offers its users a real-time collaborative media review in the cloud. While this project management tool provides a fun way to collect feedback, it doesn’t offer task management, which can reduce the efficacy of marketing and creative teams.

SyncSketch is designed to help boutique creative agencies and visual effects, animation, and gaming professionals to supercharge their remote workflow.

SyncSketch

8. Kollaborate

Kollaborate is a cloud workflow platform for video professionals. It’s produced by Digital Rebellion, and it offers integration with its other suite of apps. But in order to get the full benefits of this online proofing software, users run the risk of getting pulled into an ecosystem that could be counterproductive.

This project management platform is designed strictly for video editing and reviewing professionals allowing them an Instant real-time feedback from colleagues and clients until the project reaches approval.

9. Cospective

Cospective  is an online proofing software that offers two distinct tools to assist marketing and creative teams with the review of their video content.

The remote review tool is tremendously accurate and provides users with high-resolution videos that have high frame rates. However, the tool is quite pricey which often extends beyond the needs of most marketing and creative teams.

Cospective

10. ProofQuick

ProofQuick  accelerates design approval. While this tool aims to help creative and marketing departments save time and money, it can be somewhat outdated.

Their online proofing app allows customers and their  clients to review their proofs , edit and mark any changes, or simply approve the ads and deliver the approval without installing or downloading a specific online proofing software.

ProofQuick

The goal of  Ashore  is to stop proofs from getting lost at sea by offering  online proofing for creatives . This online proofing software has automation tools that allow teams to set up and save flexible workflows for every kind of proof. Users just need to add their approval stages, select approvers, and append their white-labeled email templates.

12. CrossCap

CrossCap  is a piece of marketing management software that adapts to the business needs of each specific customer. The tool isn’t specifically dedicated to proofing, which can make it cumbersome and ambiguous to teams that are specifically looking for this functionality.

Why you should use online proofing tools

Video, image, and document proofing software helps you solve the pains and frustrations in the traditional review and approval process, making everything faster, clearer, and easier for everyone involved.

And in project management, every second counts. To make sure that your projects are efficiently managed and free from errors, you’ll want to use the best proofing tools out there.

Four ways online proofing tools make feedback easier

Getting feedback on your content can be a headache. But  online proofing  makes life easier for everyone involved – from content creators to C-level stakeholders.

Here are four ways proofing software make feedback easier:

  • See what’s happening across all your projects
  • Get crystal clear feedback with full context
  • Make sure everyone’s on the same page
  • Manage versions and review rounds with ease

1. See what’s happening across all your projects

Imagine if you could answer any question about the status of your content within 10 seconds. Maybe even five. With Filestage , you can.

The problem

Checking the status of your content takes some serious detective work. And not the fun kind. The very, very boring kind where you have to pour through email chains, chat threads, in-app comments, and spreadsheets just to work out if a piece of work is approved or not.

In fact, you would probably struggle to answer any of these questions quickly:

  • Is this version approved and ready to be published?
  • Who still needs to give feedback?
  • Which images has the client approved?
  • When can we expect feedback from the product team?
  • Has the latest version been shared with Jane in Legal?

How proofing tools help

With free online proofing software like Filestage, you can see the status of all your content from your project dashboard. This gives you a bunch of important information at a glance, including:

  • Approval status – see which stakeholder groups have approved your content (e.g. Creative) and which ones still need to give feedback (e.g. Product)
  • Review decisions – see whether each reviewer has given their approval, requested changes, or still needs to take a look
  • File status – see which files are in review, approved, or ready to be worked on
  • Due dates – see when feedback is due and find out who is holding up the review process
  • Version management – see which version is the latest and check who approved previous versions

And because Filestage supports all the most popular file formats, it’s like a video proofing tool and document review system all rolled into one.

The cherry on top

With Filestage, you can tap “F” to search every project, file, reviewer, version, and comment. So if you remember an important piece of feedback but can’t remember where you saw it, you can track it down in no time.

F search functionality

2. Get crystal clear feedback with full context

Rumor has it that if you add up all the hours people in your company waste capturing screenshots, copying out timecodes, writing out long descriptions that make no sense to anyone but themselves, and attending meetings to explain what they meant… Well, safe to say you’d have a very big number!

Separating files and feedback is a recipe for disaster. Here are three reasons why:

  • It wastes time for stakeholders – there’s no simple way for your reviewers to give feedback, so they have to explain which parts of your content they’re talking about
  • It creates a huge margin for error – it’s easy to misinterpret the feedback and make the wrong edits, leading to more work later in the process
  • It leads to conflicts and confusion – feedback is rarely consolidated between stakeholders, so meetings need to be called to resolve things

How online proofing tools help

Review software for videos and other file formats makes it easy to give and receive feedback with pinpoint accuracy – down to the frame, letter, or pixel.

Here are five Filestage features that help make comments clear:

  • Markers – tap anywhere on your content to create a marker, even if it’s a video
  • Annotations – draw on top of your content to perfectly illustrate your point
  • Highlights – select a word or sentence you want to comment on
  • Strikeouts – select a word or sentence you want to delete
  • Attachments – add a reference or asset to your comment

In Filestage, you can get clearer feedback on all your content. That includes documents, PDFs, videos, images, live websites, interactive HTML, and audio. So you can also save your team time bouncing between tools!

Dashboard with multiple review steps

3. Make sure everyone’s on the same page

I used to wonder why stakeholders shared feedback with so many conflicts. But then I realized something. You may not like it, but I promise it’s true. It isn’t your stakeholders’ job to consolidate their feedback.

I repeat: it isn’t your stakeholders’ job to consolidate their feedback.

Your stakeholders don’t have time to read and understand everyone else’s feedback. They barely have time to give feedback themselves. And even if they want to see what other people have said, they’re sure to have trouble finding it.

Here’s why:

  • You don’t have a standardized process for collecting feedback
  • Stakeholders share feedback in the way that best suits them
  • Comments end up scattered across lots of tools and email chains

Online proofing puts transparency and collaboration at the heart of your feedback process.

In Filestage, all your stakeholders give feedback in the same place. So as they’re watching your latest edit or reading your brochure, they’ll see exactly which points other people have commented on.

So if they agree with something, all they have to do is give a thumbs up ???? And if they don’t, they can add a comment and @ the other person to kick off a discussion in real time.

Filestage also includes team-only comments. This lets you post a comment or reply that only your teammates can see, helping to keep discussions in context. So if a client posts an outlandish suggestion in the comments, you can tag a teammate to check you’re not the only one who thinks it’s crazy.

Team-only comment

4. Manage versions and review rounds with ease

Versions are like relationships. When it’s clear things aren’t working, you need to draw a line in the sand and reflect on what went wrong. Only then are you truly ready to move on.

Version control is, well, out of control. And modern collaboration tools are only making things worse. Documents and designs are in a constant state of flux, changing every time a new comment appears. Then, once the edits are done, the comments are ticked off or resolved. Almost as if nothing happened.

Here’s why that’s a problem:

  • There’s no record of where your content began and how it developed
  • There’s no history of who said what and how it impacted your work
  • Your versions all blend into one endless feedback loop

Even without these tools, you’ve still probably faced your fair share of version woes. Like getting feedback on an old version, or having your client edit your copy directly.

How. Dare. They.

Software proofing tools automatically manage your versions so everyone knows which one is the latest.

Here are three ways Filestage helps with version management:

  • Version history – use the drop-down menu on your dashboard to revisit previous versions and check the content or comments
  • New version available – if anyone opens an old version of a file, a message appears to make it clear that there’s a newer version
  • Auto-versioning – if you upload multiple new versions at once, they’re automatically matched with files of the same name

With Filestage, you can compare two versions of your content side by side. So if you need to check the new version against what you and your teammates said last time, your feedback is only a click away.

What is an online proofing tool?

Online proofing tools are designed to simplify the collaboration process for various types of digital content, including documents, designs, images, videos, and websites. The primary purpose of an online proofing tool is to streamline the feedback and approval process among team members, clients, and stakeholders, especially when working on creative projects or content production.

Here are the main types of online proofing software:

  • Video proofing tool – a visual tool for adding comments and annotations to videos
  • Document proofing software – a tool for tracking text changes and version history
  • Image proofing tool – a gallery-style tool for choosing and reviewing selects from photo shoots

With Filestage, you can upload all these formats and more – as you can see below!

What file formats can you proof online?

Online proofing tools generally support a variety of file formats to accommodate different types of content.

Here’s what file formats are supported in Filestage:

  • Documents – PDF, PDF/X, DOC (Microsoft Word), DOCX (Microsoft Word Open XML), XLSX (Microsoft Excel Open XML), PPTX (Microsoft PowerPoint Open XML)

  • Audio – MP3, AAC, WAV (browser-dependent). In the Internet Explorer, audio waveform visualization and WAV files are only supported in version 13 (Edge) or higher
  • Web content – TTPS sites, HTML (files need to be uploaded in a Zip file)

What software do online proofing tools integrate with?

Online proofing tools often integrate with a variety of software applications and platforms to improve collaboration, streamline workflows, and facilitate the review and approval process.

These integrations help users seamlessly incorporate the online proofing process into their existing workflows, making it easier to collaborate, gather feedback, and manage the review and approval process without switching between different tools or platforms.

When considering an online proofing tool, it’s important to check its list of supported integrations to ensure that it aligns with the software your team is already using.

Here are some common types of software that online proofing tools mostly integrate with:

  • Project management and collaboration tools – Asana, Trello, Monday.com, Basecamp, Jira, Slack
  • Creative software and design tools – Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.), Sketch, Figma, Canva
  • Content management systems (CMS) – WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, HubSpot
  • Cloud storage and file sharing services – Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, OneDrive
  • Video collaboration tools – Frame.io, Wistia, Vimeo
  • Marketing automation and email marketing platforms – HubSpot, Marketo, MailChimp
  • Customer relationship management (CRM) software – Salesforce, HubSpot CRM
  • Productivity suites – Microsoft Office 365, Google Workspace
  • Web development platforms – WordPress, Wix, Squarespace
  • Analytics and reporting tools – Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics
  • Social media management tools – Hootsuite, Buffer

What are the benefits of online proofing?

The benefits of online proofing collectively contribute to a more streamlined and efficient content creation and review process. This leads to improved collaboration, faster project completion, and higher quality of your projects.

Here are the five key advantages of using online proofing tools:

  • Efficient collaboration and feedback loop – Online proofing tools allow real-time collaboration among team members, clients, and stakeholders, regardless of their geographic locations. Users can easily provide feedback, comments, and annotations directly on the content, eliminating the need for lengthy email chains or in-person meetings.
  • Reduced review cycle times – With online proofing, review cycles are streamlined as comments and changes are documented directly on the content. This reduces back-and-forth communication and prevents misunderstandings.
  • Version control and audit trail – Online proofing tools often include version tracking and maintain a detailed history of changes made to the content. This helps users keep track of different iterations, compare changes over time, and maintain a clear audit trail of feedback and approvals.
  • Improved visual communication – Annotation and mark-up features in online proofing tools make it easier to communicate visual feedback. Reviewers can pinpoint specific areas for improvement directly on files, leading to clearer communication and a better understanding of required changes.
  • Improved accuracy and consistency – Online proofing helps reduce errors and inconsistencies in the final content. By capturing feedback and changes directly on the content itself, there is less chance of misinterpretation or miscommunication.

Final thoughts

Everyone faces problems in the feedback process, but few choose to do anything about it.

I hope I’ve helped to shine a light on these problems and identify some solutions that work for you, your team, and your stakeholders. If you’d like to take a closer look at Filestage’s online proofing solution, start a free trial .

What Is Proofreading Software?

The 5 types of proofreading tools.

  • The Best Proofreading Tools & Editing Software

Final Thoughts

The best free & paid proofreading & editing software (to use in 2023).

proofing online software

If you’re looking for the best proofreading tool on the market, I’ll tell you what it is:

The best proofreading software out there is Grammarly .

But even in 2022, it still has severe limitations.

We at Scribe tested the 8 most popular editing apps on the market in 2022, and none of them could hold a candle to a human proofreader .

But that doesn’t mean proofreading tools are worthless. Not at all.

I highly recommend Grammarly for :

  • Flagging possible grammar mistakes
  • Finding repetitive words and phrases
  • Noticing “picky” details like spacing
  • Highlighting basic style issues
  • Cleaning up your writing before it goes to an editor
  • “Last looks” for typos

I do not recommend Grammarly for :

  • Accepting every suggestion
  • Blindly altering your writing style
  • Skipping a human editor

Why not? Because of writing like this:

“Our team has reviewed and requested our Chrome product team to review the GingerChrome store page again and fix any necessary correction.”

This was an actual comment from the team of the Ginger editing app (not Grammarly), on a negative review of the Ginger Chrome Extension.

As part of our test, we ran their comments through the Ginger app itself, and the app found nothing wrong with it .

Then we ran it through another app. And another. Of all the proofreading apps we tested, most found 0 errors in that sentence.

Even Grammarly, the top performer, only found 2, and one of its suggestions was arguably worse. (I’ll show you those suggestions in the Grammarly review.)

So, before you start using Grammarly , make sure you understand what it is and isn’t good for—in 2022 and beyond.

True editing apps, like Grammarly, apply artificial intelligence (AI) to proofreading.

AI is the science (and art) of programming computers to think and behave like human beings. It’s at the cutting edge of technology, but it has a long way to go.

You might think that Microsoft Word’s spell checker is pretty good—and it is—but it isn’t artificial intelligence. MS Word just checks each word you type against a dictionary.

That’s pretty basic stuff.

Editing apps are far more than spell checkers; they’re true grammar checkers. They’re even style checkers. And those kinds of mistakes are a lot harder to find than spelling errors.

Why? Because grammatical errors depend on context.

Here’s an example:

If I write, “It was the best of time, it was the worst of time,” you know right away that “time” is missing an “s.”

A spell checker wouldn’t flag it because “time” is in the dictionary. The word exists, it’s just being used incorrectly

proofing online software

Human beings see issues like that immediately because our brains are wired for language. But teaching a computer to do the same thing is far more complicated than you might imagine.

In fact, it’s so complicated that even the best proofreading app doesn’t do it very well.

That’s why a good proofreading app needs to explain each flagged issue, simply and clearly, to help you decide how (or even whether) to follow the suggestion.

There are 5 different types of proofreading tools, most of which can be useful to professional Authors. All 5 of them check for spelling mistakes, grammar errors, and style choices, but they’re used in different places.

1. Chrome Extensions

Proofreading extensions for Chrome or other browsers (like Firefox or Safari), evaluate your writing no matter where you go on the web. If you’re typing online, they watch what you type and offer suggestions.

You can install these like any other browser extension, and they add writing tools to your browser that check spelling, grammar, and style.

If you write in Google Docs, you’ll need more than a Chrome extension. You’ll need a grammar tool that integrates directly with the Google Docs app.

2. Online Proofreading Tools

Website apps.

Free online proofreading apps are websites that offer a simple text box where you can paste limited amounts of text to check it for spelling, grammar, and style.

They’re free, but you get what you pay for. The ones we tested ranged from bad to terrible.

Full-service online apps

Some services (like Grammarly) offer true web apps, akin to Google Docs, that let you write and save documents in your own cloud space.

They include a full range of built-in proofreading tools, but their formatting tools are limited. For professional manuscript formatting , I recommend writing in MS Word with a Grammarly addon.

3. Mobile Apps

These are keyboard extensions for phones and tablets that automatically check your writing on every text and tweet.

If you write on an iOS or Android tablet in a mobile word processor, you’ll want a mobile proofreading app.

4. MS Word Add-ons

For writers who compose on MS Word, proofreading addons provide grammar and style suggestions right in your Word documents as you type.

If you write in MS Word, this will be your best choice, but these add-ons only work on MS Office for Windows. Apple users will need to use a desktop app.

5. Desktop Apps for Mac and Windows

Desktop proofreading software provides a native word processor that’s designed for proofreading and editing .

Most of these apps don’t have great formatting options, so I recommend writing in MS Word even if you use a desktop app for editing.

If you don’t have access to an MS Office add-on, you can open any .docx file in a desktop proofreading app to check it.

The Best Proofreading Tools & Editing Software

1. grammarly.

Grammarly is far and away the best proofreading and editing tool on the market. It offers:

  • Browser extensions
  • A full-service online app
  • Mobile apps
  • An MS Office add-on for Windows
  • Desktop apps for Mac and Windows

It even has a Google Docs integration, but this is a newer offering that seems less robust than the others. It let me type “I eats the pudding” without any complaints, even though the browser extension flagged it correctly.

The MS Office add-on doesn’t work on a Mac, but the desktop app lets you drag and drop a .docx file to open it in the app and check your writing.

The Chrome extension and desktop app were extremely easy to install, and Grammarly’s features (which work the same way across every version) made it the clear winner:

  • It has the smartest AI (and best proofreading flags) of every app we tested
  • One-click suggestions make it easy to accept good changes
  • The clean, intuitive interface requires almost no learning time
  • You can filter the suggestions by category with one click
  • There’s even a “Change-all” option for pervasive errors

Basic suggestions are free, with advanced grammar suggestions (including tone) in paid plans:

  • Premium Version: $139.95 per year
  • Business Version: plans starting at $150 per member, per year

Caveat of Grammarly

1. internet requirement.

Grammarly has to be connected to the Internet to work, even with the desktop app. That’s because the AI “lives” in the cloud, not in the app that sits on your desktop.

If the app can’t communicate with the AI, it can’t understand what you’re typing.

2. The AI is still learning

Grammarly was the smartest app we tested, but that only says so much.

For our sample text:

The Grammarly desktop app suggested:

“Our team has reviewed and requested our Chrome product team to discuss the GingerChrome store page again and fix any necessary corrections .”

This isn’t much better. But I’ll let you in on a secret: this is a very hard test for any proofreading AI system.

Why? Because it probably wasn’t written by a native English speaker. “Fix any necessary correction”? Nobody would say that. The construction is just too strange.

Which is exactly the problem.

AI systems get smarter with feedback. They learn which suggestions people did or didn’t accept, and they adjust future suggestions based on that information.

But mistakes that native speakers would never make are, by definition, very rare, so the system doesn’t see them often enough to learn from them.

That’s why we chose this as a test: to push the proofreading AI’s to the limit of their capability.

The fact that Grammarly made any sense of it was impressive.

2. ProWriting Aid

ProWriting Aid was the only other app we tested that had a chance against Grammarly. It works with:

  • Google Docs
  • MS Office (in Windows)
  • Desktop app

Not surprisingly, it also needs an internet connection to work. Powerful AIs need powerful computers. They live in the cloud on fast, dedicated servers and work with your computer (or phone) remotely.

It also doesn’t work with MS Office on Apple, just like Grammarly.

But in the battle of ProwritingAid vs. Grammarly, this one lost because:

  • It offered fewer one-click fixes
  • The interface was not as clean
  • Navigation was not as intuitive
  • The suggestions were not presented as well
  • Extra features, like reports, cluttered the screen without being useful

3. Hemingway App

We included the Hemingway App in our test because it appeared in other articles on grammar checking software, but it was designed more for bloggers than professional Authors.

And it wasn’t very smart.

The one feature it did have was the ability to work offline, but that’s the tradeoff. If you want an AI that’s smarter than a word processor, you’ll need an Internet connection.

The Hemingway App failed our test because:

  • It does not offer one-click fixes
  • It gives general writing guidance but no specifics
  • It’s designed for WordPress and Medium, not book Authors

It does have a free online tool, but the tool doesn’t save your work. If you get disconnected or you close the tab by accident, you can kiss your work goodbye.

The Hemingway App is good for helping you see things that need to be fixed, but that’s about it.

4. Ginger Software

We loaded the Ginger Chrome extension to give it a try, but the AI didn’t even come close to Grammarly.

These are the folks who wrote our bad test copy, and their own software didn’t correct it.

They did a nice job designing their sales page, but the app doesn’t stand up to the hype.

5. WhiteSmoke

WhiteSmoke is the used car lot of proofreading services.

The sales page extols the virtues of proofreading apps in general, hoping you won’t notice that the “demo” video doesn’t show the product and that they hardly offer any screenshots of the app.

There’s no free version or trial version, and what little you can see of the app doesn’t look great.

This is not the app you’re looking for.

6. PaperRater

PaperRater is a website that’s supposedly designed to help students write papers (not books), but it doesn’t even do that.

  • It doesn’t offer any fixes
  • The “report” is terrible
  • If you click on “advanced analysis,” it takes you to Grammarly

Enough said.

7. LanguageTool

LanguageTool offers add-ons and/or extensions for several browsers and word processors, but the AI just isn’t up to par.

You can try it for yourself for free using the online tool, which does offer one-click changes, but if you hit “undo,” you’ll have to run the check all over again.

It found no errors in our horrible test copy, and it tags people’s names as misspellings.

8. SlickWrite

The free online version of SlickWrite is reasonably smart when it comes to finding issues, but it’s lousy at fixing them.

It doesn’t offer any suggestions, and the explanations it does offer are far too technical. You won’t understand them unless you already have a solid command of sentence structure, grammar, and style, which largely defeats the purpose of the app.

Although it’s far from perfect, Grammarly has a solid place in the professional Author’s arsenal.

It offers a ton of useful features in a simple, clean interface, and it’s the smartest proofreading AI by far when it comes to writing skills.

Authors who want to self-publish ( and 99.99% of them should ), will still need to hire an editor . But that editing will be faster, smoother, and a lot cheaper if you’ve done everything you can to clean up your writing before you get there.

Free online proofreading and essay editor

A reliable proofreading tool and essay editor for any writer or student, a complete environment.

Typely is more than just a proofreading tool. It's a complete writing environment.

Thousands of checks

More than a thousand checks are being performed and we've only scratched the surface.

Inspired by the greatest writers

Gain access to humanity’s collective understanding about the craft of writing.

A proofreading tool that does not bark at every tree

Typely is precise. Existing tools for proofreading raise so many false alarms that their advice cannot be trusted. Instead, the writer must carefully consider whether to accept or reject each change.

We aim for a tool so precise that it becomes possible to unquestioningly adopt its recommendations and still come out ahead — with stronger, tighter prose. Better to be quiet and authoritative than loud and unreliable.

Relax, focus, write your next masterpiece...

Writing presumes more than simply laying out words on a paper. Typely helps you get in the mood and keeps you focused, immersed and ready to write your story.

Whether you need a distraction-free environment, some chill relaxing sounds or a pomodoro timer to manage your time we got you covered.

Got questions? We have answers.

No. Typely is completely free and we plan on keeping it that way. We are considering some advanced features however that might be available under a premium plan.

The only limit we have applied thus far is on the number of characters you can submit and that is being set at a maximum of 50,000.

In theory yes but that will require a lot of work and professionals dedicated for this job. We are considering a way of letting the community participate somehow.

Typely does not do grammar checking because it's hard and almost impossible to get right. The aim for Typely is to be precise and reliable.

H&R Block wiped out the tax data of consumers trying to choose a more affordable option, FTC alleges

Facebook

Ever spend hours (and hours) inputting complicated financial information online only have it deleted? It’s frustrating enough when it’s due to a technical glitch, but according to an FTC complaint against tax preparer H&R Block , wiping out consumers’ already keyed-in tax data was an intentional sales tactic the company used to pressure people to pay for pricier products. Read on to learn more about H&R Block’s conduct that the FTC alleges is, well, taxing – and deceptive and unfair – to consumers.

According to an administrative complaint that will be available soon on the FTC website , H&R Block has used an extensive TV and online campaign to deceptively market its services as “free” – as in “nada. . . zip. . . zilch” – when the services weren’t free for most filers. While ads said the “free” offer applied to “simple returns,” the FTC alleges H&R Block made it difficult for consumers to figure out whether their returns qualified as “simple.” What’s more, the FTC says the company frequently changed its own definition of “simple.” The complaint cites examples of the confusion and frustration caused by the company’s allegedly deceptive claims.

But it’s how H&R Block allegedly coerced people to pay for services they didn’t need that merits particular attention. According to the complaint, throughout the online filing process, the company upsold pricier services without a clear breakdown of what they would cost. But when consumers decided to downgrade to a more affordable H&R Block product, the FTC says the company had some aggravating – and unfair – surprises for them. First, they couldn’t downgrade without communicating directly with H&R Block’s customer service department. Second, after people had spent substantial time inputting their tax information and then decided to downgrade to a less expensive H&R Block filing product, the FTC says the company presented them with an unfair choice: pay for a more expensive product they didn’t want or need or H&R Block would wipe out nearly all of their already typed-in tax information and make them start from scratch.

And let’s be clear. The FTC alleges this wasn’t a system glitch. It was an intentional sales tactic to create a disincentive for consumers who wanted a more affordable option. The complaint charges that H&R Block retained the data for consumers who upgraded, but deleted the data for those who downgraded, forcing many consumers to choose between overpaying or losing all the information they had already entered.

Count I of the complaint challenges H&R Block’s policy of making consumers who want to downgrade communicate with its customer service department – an often time-consuming hoop the company didn’t require upgrading customers to jump through. Count II alleges that H&R Block’s tactic of requiring consumers either to pay for more expensive products they didn’t need or to have their data wiped out after hours of effort was an unfair practice, in violation of the FTC Act. Count III alleges that the company’s “free” filing claims are deceptive.

Even at this early stage, this is an important case for advertisers to follow.

Boosting team performance with advanced online proofing software.

proofing online software

In the dynamic world of creative fields, collaboration plays out differently than more structured sectors like finance or accounting. Success here is deeply rooted in flawless teamwork and a constant flow of ideas rather than tasks that can be easily delineated or managed via spreadsheets.

The rise of remote working and the broadening scope of international projects have significantly altered the interaction dynamics among creative teams. The traditional direct, office-based collaboration model has been replaced by a scenario where meeting in a shared space or presenting designs to clients in person is no longer the norm.

This is where Online Proofing Software comes into play, serving as a revolutionary tool to redefine collaboration in today’s changing landscape. It significantly improves the creative workflow by facilitating effective communication and managing projects dynamically, even when team members are spread across different locations.

The Current Challenges Facing Creative Teams

Once, it was common for creative professionals, including designers, writers, and illustrators, to work together in one location. This concept seems almost from another era, especially with the creative industry facing unprecedented changes. According to Creative Pool, 88.5% of creatives work remotely, leaving a small fraction in traditional office settings.

This shift towards remote working has introduced significant hurdles, disrupting the seamless flow of creative collaboration. Companies now juggle complex projects and teams dispersed over broad geographic areas, striving to maintain team unity and continuous creative output.

The need for effective digital communication and project management tools has become more pronounced than ever. Without solutions like Online Proofing Software, teams may find themselves lost in confusing email exchanges, leading to errors and misunderstandings.

Addressing the Challenges with Online Proofing Software

What, then, is the solution to these persistent challenges? Online Proofing Software steps forward as a bespoke solution catering to the unique needs of creative teams. From simplifying complex email dialogues with a straightforward annotation system to sharing ideas and designs effortlessly, this software consolidates all elements of creative collaboration onto one platform.

The software is designed precisely to overcome the hurdles of remote teamwork, document annotation, and engaging stakeholders effectively. Key features that highlight the indispensability of this software include:

  • File Sharing: Overcome geographical barriers by offering instant access to and distributing the latest project files, enabling early client involvement.
  • Version Control: Improve clarity and organization in remote work environments by meticulously tracking changes, aligning all team members, and minimizing the risk of expensive mistakes.
  • Feedback Loops: Optimize the feedback process, allowing team members to easily give, receive, and implement feedback, streamlining communication.
  • Real-Time Collaboration Tools: Recreate the dynamics of in-person teamwork by allowing documents or designs to be worked on simultaneously, regardless of physical location, which is vital for fostering creativity and quick decision-making.
  • Task Management Systems: Ensure remote teams remain focused and coherent by clearly defining tasks, deadlines, and responsibilities, thus safeguarding against project delays.
  • Integrated Communication Channels: Enable clear and direct communication through a single platform for messaging, video calls, and emails, significantly enhancing the precision and efficiency of team interactions.

Promoting an Inclusive and Flexible Creative Process

The capabilities of Online Proofing Software extend beyond its functional features; its real value lies in fostering a more inclusive and dynamic creative process. The software makes the creative workflow accessible to a broader range of participants, from marketing teams to external clients, thereby enhancing collaboration and input.

This approach supports quicker iterations and adjustments and keeps pace with the swift changes in market trends and consumer preferences, allowing teams to prototype, test, and refine ideas with greater agility.

Revolutionizing Creative Teamwork with Ashore

The evolution of creative teamwork necessitates moving away from traditional, face-to-face interactions. In today’s fast-moving and distributed work environments, achieving success requires adopting rapid timelines, maintaining constant communication, and implementing efficient design feedback systems.

Ashore is at the cutting edge of this shift, providing online proofing software that transforms the collaborative process for creative teams. With contextual commenting, intuitive markup tools, and efficient team management functionalities, Ashore streamlines the review process, enabling quick and constructive design feedback. Software provider Avast will pay $16.5 million for compromising consumers’ privacy

Facebook

Software provider Avast sold products to people that were supposed to protect their privacy online. But in a recently settled lawsuit, the FTC says Avast’s business practices actually compromised consumers’ privacy and broke the law.

Since at least 2014, Avast collected a treasure trove of user information through its antivirus software and browser extensions without people’s consent. This included information about their

  • religious beliefs
  • health concerns
  • political leanings
  • financial status

But that’s not all, the FTC says Avast sold the information through its subsidiary Jumpshot — without notifying people and getting their consent (again).

The FTC’s settlement order prohibits Avast from misrepresenting how it uses the data it collects. Additionally, Avast will pay $16.5 million dollars in redress to compensate people. Keep an eye on the FTC’s Refund Programs page in the coming months for more details. And to learn more about the FTC’s settlement with Avast, read the FTC’s business blog pos t.

What to know about today's landing.

  • The “Odysseus” lunar lander built by Intuitive Machines is expected to touch down on the lunar surface at 6:24 p.m. ET.
  • The landing attempt will be livestreamed on NASA TV beginning at 5 p.m. ET.
  • The mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, which the space agency set up to support development of moon landers by private-sector companies.

After tense moments, Intuitive says contact made with lander

It was touch and go for a few moments, but Intuitive said a little after 6:30 p.m. ET that it had mde contact with its lander on the lunar surface.

The robotic spacecraft becomes the first privately built craft to touch down on the lunar surface, as well as the first American vehicle to accomplish the feat in more than 50 years.

Roughly an hour before landing, the company also scrambled to resolve a problem with laser instruments designed to help the spacecraft assess the lunar terrain and find a safe and hazard-free spot to touch down. The laser rangefinders aboard Odysseus were not operable but sensors on one of the NASA science instruments aboard the lander were repurposed instead.

Coverage of the landing has begun on Intuitive Machines' website and on NASA TV . People can watch on either site but the streams are identical.

'The longest 15 seconds'

In the final moments of Odysseus' descent, it may take a bit of time to confirm what exactly happened.

Intuitive Machines said they expect about a 15-second delay as data is relayed back to Earth. In a video published yesterday by the company, Intuitive Machines' Chief Technology Officer, Tim Crain, said it will be a nail-biting finish.

"I can tell you just from doing our simulations, that's the longest 15 seconds you'll ever experience," he said, "as you wait for the final light to turn green to indicate that you've landed on the moon."

Inside the space race back to the moon

The U.S. has ambitions to be the first to get back to the moon. NBC News’ Sam Brock has more on the space race to the lunar surface.

The challenges of landing on the moon

With less than two hours to go before landing, the biggest hurdles are still ahead for Odysseus. But getting to this point has its own challenges, too.

In a video describing the spacecraft's flight path, Intuitive Machines Chief Technology Officer Tim Crain explained how the spacecraft will prepare for its descent to the lunar surface. In particular, Odysseus must complete a burn maneuver on the far side of the moon, where the moon itself blocks direct communication with mission controllers on Earth.

“Once we get around the moon, we have on the day side of the moon the sun heating us from one side and reflected infrared light off the bright moon warming us on the other,” Crain said. “Then we plunge into night and now we’re cold on both sides. It’s very tough.”

Creator of NASA’s lunar cargo program explains ‘shots on goal’ approach

Michael Sheetz, CNBC

Thomas Zurbuchen led the creation of NASA’s $2.6 billion Commercial Lunar Payload Services program about six years ago, out of which Intuitive Machines’ won an $118 million contract to carry payloads for the IM-1 mission.

“Coming up with Commercial Lunar Payload Services, I basically felt that the moon as a planetary body had not been focused on enough. The question was: Can we [land cargo missions on the moon] at a rate that is substantially lower in cost than the half-a-billion to a billion dollars that it would take if we did it on the inside of the agency?” Zurbuchen told CNBC.

This NASA program is about tolerating failures and trying to help companies make as many attempts as possible, as frequently as possible, while the agency focuses its own efforts instead on its crewed Artemis missions.

“We should give it a few shots on goal to just make sure it can work at the 50% level, or find out if that is a lot less likely,” Zurbuchen said.

Meanwhile, in rocket news...

Jeff Bezos' space company, Blue Origin, showed off its new rocket today. The booster, dubbed New Glenn, was rolled out and raised into vertical position at Launch Complex 36 at Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

The rocket will now undergo a week of testing at the launchpad.

New Glenn was named for astronaut John Glenn, who was the first American to orbit Earth. Blue Origin has yet to announce a date for New Glenn's debut launch, but it is expected to be sometime this year.

Intuitive Machines stock has surged 300%. How Wall Street reads the moon-fueled rally.

Much like  Intuitive Machines’  spacecraft, its stock has been flying to the moon over the past week.

In a little over a month since hitting all-time lows, and with its  IM-1 mission   on the way to the lunar surface , shares of Intuitive Machines have climbed more than 300% since early January. It’s a rally that Wall Street analysts describe as fueled by retail investors’ excitement for the space company’s progress toward an unprecedented goal.

The Texas-based lunar company’s stock, with the apt ticker of “LUNR,” now trades for about $9 per share, a far cry from January lows of closer to $2. At one point this week, as IM-1 progressed through milestones ahead of its landing attempt — the stock reached over $13 in trading.

Part of Odysseus' payload: A bit of art

Jeff Koons, an American artist best known for his oversized sculptures of everday objects (like massive balloon animals with bright mirror finishes), has some art aboard today's lander.

A Koons piece, " Moon Phases ," is a piece of artwork that features a collection of 125 moon sculptures that are aboard Odysseus and will be displayed on the lunar surface.

There's more riding on today's moon landing than just a spot in history. Odysseus was developed as part of a NASA program that aims to support the agency's broader ambitions to return astronauts to the moon and build bases on the lunar surface.

NASA eventually plans to hire companies like Intuitive Machines to ferry cargo and science instruments to the moon.

Intuitive Machines was awarded a $118 million contract to carry out the current mission with the Odysseus lander.

Houston-based company Intuitive Machines looks to make history

No private company has ever landed a spacecraft on the moon. Intuitive Machines hopes to change that today.

The company, headquarted in Houston (also knows as Space City for being home to NASA's human spaceflight operations), built the Odysseus lander as part of IM-1 — the name for its lunar mission.

The company is stacked with NASA and space-industry veterans including CEO and co-founder Stephen Altemus, who previously worked as the deputy director of the Johnson Space Center.

The private space industry has boomed in recent decades thanks in part to the emergence of more launch options including SpaceX and Blue Origin.

No easy feat

Intuitive Machines is hoping to suceed where other recent landers have failed.

Just last month, a different private company, the Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic Technology, was chasing the same historic milestone. Astrobotic's lander, named Peregrine, lifted off on Jan. 8 but suffered a damaging fuel leak shortly after launch that left the spacecraft with no way to reach the moon. The company was eventually forced to scrap the mission and Peregrine burned up in the atmosphere after languishing in space for more than a week.

Only five nations and their government space agencies have achieved a controlled or "soft" landing on the moon. The first was the Soviet Union in 1966. The United States followed suit a few months later with the robotic Surveyor 1 spacecraft.

Most recently, Japan has joined the elite ranks of countries that can boast a moon landing. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, or SLIM probe, touched down on Jan. 25.

Intuitive Machines said that its livestream of the landing mission will start at 5 p.m. ET, after the landing itself was pushed back to 6:24 p.m.

What to expect during landing

To prepare Odysseus for landing, mission controllers will bring the spacecraft down to an orbit of around 6 miles above the lunar surface. Once that happens, the craft will be autonomous, using onboard cameras and lasers to navigate its descent.

The spacecraft must slow itself by roughly 6,000 feet per second in order to land softly on the moon, according to Intuitive Machines.

As Odysseus nears its landing site, the spacecraft's onboard software will scan for a safe area that is relatively flat and free of other hazards. Then, from an altitude of approximately 100 feet above the surface, the lander will begin its vertical descent.

Officials at Intuitive Machines described the final step in the landing process as walking toward a door with eyes closed for the last 3 feet. “You know you're close enough, but your inner ear must lead you through the door,” the company said in a statement .

Updated landing time

NASA announced that Intuitive Machines will add one extra orbit around the moon before attempting to land Odysseus on the surface. The maneuver will push the landing time back, with a new targeted touchdown of 6:24 p.m. ET.

The landing time has shifted a few times today (and in days prior) as mission controllers have adjusted the spacecraft's orbit in preparation for its descent to the moon.

Lunar selfie

Say cheese!

Odysseus snapped this selfie shortly after it entered into orbit around the moon on Wednesday.

Odysseus' landing site explained

Intuitive Machines' lander will be targeting a landing site close to the moon's south pole. The spacecraft will attempt touch down near a crater called Malapert A.

The crater was named after Charles Malapert, a Belgian astronomer who lived from 1581 to 1630.

During NASA's Apollo program, astronauts landed at various sites in the moon's equatorial region, but the south pole has been intriguing to scientists because water ice is thought to be relatively abundant in permanently shadowed craters.

In 2022, NASA unveiled 13 areas , all located near the moon's south pole, as potential landing sites for the agency's upcoming Artemis III mission, which will land the first woman and the first person of color on the moon. That flight is expected to launch in September 2026.

It's moon landing day!

A robotic spacecraft will attempt to become the first privately built craft to touch down on the moon. If successful, it will also be the first American spacecraft to touch down on the lunar surface in more than 50 years.

Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C lander, nicknamed Odysseus, is expected to touch down on the lunar surface at 4:24 p.m. ET. If all goes as planned, the lander will be the first American spacecraft on the moon since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

Odysseus will be targeting a landing site near a crater called Malapert A, close to the moon’s south pole.

Intuitive's spacecraft, nicknamed Odysseus, is on its way. This picture from shortly after its launch shows Earth in the background.

The U.S. hasn't landed anything on the moon in 50 years. That could change today.
