Answer Survey Questions & Get Paid!

One of my favorite ways to make money answering questions is to do surveys.

Answering survey questions can actually be quite profitable. If you’re not experienced in a high paying field like medical or legal, you may only earn a few bucks giving your advice on question and answer sites. But with surveys, anyone can give their opinion.

Pay for surveys varies from as little as a $1 to more than $25 per survey.

While you won’t qualify for every survey, if you join a few different sites, you should get a steady stream of survey questions to answer. The best part about surveys is that some are super short and others are in-depth, so you can find ones to suit your schedule.

Here are some websites that pay you to answer survey questions…

Other Ways to Sell Your Advice for Money

Above, I’ve given you three different methods for making money answering questions. But, that’s not the only way to make cash from answering questions online.

Here are a few more ways to earn money by answering questions online…

43. Sell courses

Are you wondering, “ how do I sell my advice for money”

Well, then you might want to consider selling a course .

Are you knowledgeable about photography? Or perhaps you know a lot about programming? Whatever it is, it’s likely that you have knowledge of at least one topic. So why not create a course around it and earn money from your expertise?

You could offer video courses, PowerPoint presentations, eBooks and more. You can create a course on anything from writing to physics and sell it online.

Here are a few sites where you can sell courses:

You could earn $100s or even $1,000s a month selling online courses. According to Skillshare, its top teachers earn $3,000 plus!

44. Self-publish books with Kindle Direct Publishing

Another option to consider is selling books through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). You can sell non-fiction books there. Anyone can sign up and list a book for sale on Amazon.

So you could create how-to books, guides, and more on whatever subject it is that you’re knowledgeable about.

The good thing about the KDP program is that it gives you a pretty high commission! You earn up to 70% in royalties.

You can make $100s or even $1,000s a month selling books with KDP.

  • Get started here .

45. Start a blog

Sure, these paid question and answer sites are good because you can simply sign up and get paid to answer questions.

Often though, with these sites, you’re having to give pretty detailed answers and the amount that you earn doesn’t always seem worth it for the amount of time that you’ve put into writing a detailed answer.

With blogging though, you can write detailed posts, and then keep making money from those posts over and over again.

Of course, you’ll need to build up a following and monetize your blog. There are a few ways to do this such as:

  • Putting Google ads on your site
  • Using affiliate links in your posts
  • Creating sponsored content for brands.

Once you have a following, you can start to increase your income.

To get started, you’ll need to use a platform like WordPress.org to publish content and get a domain name and hosting from sites like Bluehost, HostGator, and GoDaddy.

So if you’re knowledgeable about a particular topic, then consider creating a blog post about it.

While you won’t get much traffic to the blog at first, over time you can build up traffic and you could eventually earn $1,000s a month from your blog.

46. Online coaching

Another way to get paid to answer questions is to offer an online coaching service. If you’re knowledgeable and experienced with a subject, then you could provide a one-on-one online coaching service.

You could set up a website to advertise your services, and you could also consider setting up social media accounts, and a Facebook group for your community.

As an online coach, you can set your own rates. Online coaches earn around $27 an hour.

47. YouTube

YouTube is another platform where you can share your expertise. Whether it’s fitness, fashion, or cooking, you can start up a YouTube channel on pretty much any topic that you’re knowledgeable about.

Since YouTube gets more than 1 billion users each month , you could build up a large following on there. Many YouTubers earn $1,000s or even millions of dollars from their channels.

Once you have enough channel views, you’ll be eligible to become a YouTube Partner. As a YouTube Partner, you can earn money from the ads that play on your videos. You can also get paid to create sponsored videos for brands too.

Just choose a topic and then start your channel.

Although YouTube doesn’t say how much it pays its content creators, online figures suggest that YouTubers earn from $0.25 to $7 for every 1,000 views they get. To get an idea, read our post on how much do YouTubers make .

You get paid through your AdSense account. Payment options for AdSense earnings include Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and check.

48. Become a customer support agent

If you want to get paid to answer questions for people, then you might want to consider being a customer support agent. Customer support agents respond to customer questions and help them with any issues that they may have.

Here’s where you can find work as a customer service agent:

  • American Express

Customer service agents make around $15 an hour on average. Pay can be anywhere from $11 to $21 an hour.

49. Become a mystery shopper

You could consider doing some mystery shopping work . Mystery shoppers visit local stores, restaurants, and other businesses and then they provide feedback on their experience. They have to answer questions about things like how clean the place was or how well they were treated by the business’s employees.

Here’s where you can find work as a mystery shopper:

  • Field Agent
  • iSecretShop
  • Secret Shopper

You can make from $8 to $25 an hour as a mystery shopper.

50. Test out websites

Another way that you can make money answering questions is by testing out websites. Website testers visit websites and provide feedback on things like how quickly the site loaded and how easy it was to navigate. One company that pays you to test out websites for companies and clients is UserTesting. For every 20-minute test that you complete, UserTesting will pay you $10.

What about Quora and Reddit?

Online, I’ve seen a lot of people asking, “Does Quora pay you to answer questions?”

I’ve also seen people asking whether you can get paid to post on Reddit.

Quora and Reddit are two popular websites where people can ask questions and discuss everything from writing to their favorite TV shows.

I like reading through Reddit in particular. So I totally understand if people wonder if they can actually get paid for the time they spend there.

Quora and Reddit do not directly pay you or anyone to answer questions.

These sites are free to use and are basically there for people to chat about different topics.

However, while Quora and Reddit won’t pay you to answer questions, you can still earn money from both platforms – but indirectly.

You know how I mentioned that you could make money from starting a blog, offering coaching, selling books, or from a YouTube channel?

Well, you could use Quora or Reddit to promote yourself as an expert in your field and then to drive traffic to your book, blog, YouTube channel, or website.

Now, be careful here. Sites like Reddit have guidelines for threads and moderators who police these guidelines. So don’t just go on Reddit or Quora and start promoting your own stuff.

Instead, take the time to participate in the community. Answer people’s questions. As you start to get more upvotes and more involved in the community, you can then start to promote your own stuff.

For example, I was reading through a discussion on Reddit about writing, and a writer posted a link to an article on their website that offered advice related to the question asked by the person who started the discussion. This link was helpful, and it also promoted the writer’s site.

On Quora, you can even create a tagline that describes your experience in a few words, like “Professional graphic designer.”

Basically, you answer questions on these sites and then link to any of your own helpful articles, books, or videos that you’ve created.

If you hang out in the relevant subreddits or answer relevant questions on Quora, then you could send traffic back to your business. And more traffic means more leads and sales for you.

Just make sure that you aren’t too salesy and instead focus on helping others.

Get Paid for Your Knowledge!

Answering questions can earn you anywhere from a few bucks to $1,000s. The best thing you can do to ensure that you maximize your earning potential is to provide people with helpful and detailed answers. Once the solutions have been developed, they need to be tested. This can involve testing the solution in a simulated environment, or in the real world. Once the solution has been tested, the results should be evaluated. This involves looking at the results and determining if the solution was successful or not. 21 Legit Ways to Get Paid to Answer Questions (Start Earning Today!)

Written by Schiavonne Robinson - Verified by Amanda on May 15, 2023

If you got good grades during your K-12 years, you’d be glad to know that you could profit off your knowledge and get paid to answer questions from home or elsewhere.

Providing solutions doesn’t only benefit you monetarily; it aids the people you assist.

In a freeCodeCamp article I came across, author Rick West narrates a time when his son asked him for help with something, and he blew him off by telling him to find the answer himself.

But his son told him it’s unkind to refuse to help someone when they’re asking for it.

This statement reminded West about a time when a higher-up dismissed him for asking for help.

I had experiences, especially as a kid, when I reached out for help but was treated like a bother, and how much that hurt.

Sure, search engines make it simple to find something within seconds.

However, the results aren’t always accurate (or they’re completely off-base).

This is where you could come in because, unlike a search engine, you could provide answers based on in-depth research or experience rather than vague responses to keyword phrases.

And since it’s an expert’s job to assist others, people might find them approachable and feel more comfortable seeking them out.

Many sites and careers I’ll list below offer opportunities for you to cash in on your expertise.

Tips on Getting Paid/Increasing Your Earnings

If you do decide to make money by answering questions, the following tips will help you to earn more money and increase your cash flow.

Getting Paid

If you’re an employee or have an established payment method through an expert site like JustAnswer, you shouldn’t worry about receiving on-time payments.

But what if you’re self-employed?

As a business owner, you have to be responsible for your own payment methods, but I can make your job a bit easier by listing these suggestions:

  • Checks/Money Orders: Checks and money orders provide paper evidence of payment. Keep in mind that they can take a while to arrive in your mailbox and days to clear in your bank account, so it’s not the best option if you’re desperate for money.
  • Direct Deposit: Direct deposit payments are much quicker than checks and money orders. However, they require you to share bank information. Make sure your client is trustworthy with your bank credentials.
  • Payment App: Payment apps like PayPal or Cash App allow you to receive your payment without putting your bank credentials at stake. You could also use payment apps specifically made for businesses like Stripe or Payoneer.

Increasing Your Earnings

There are three methods you could use to boost your income.

1. Offer auxiliary services in addition to your main business.

Some self-employed individuals make extra side money by offering additional services to their main business, and you could, too.

For example, if you operated a resume-writing business, you could add career consulting services to help your clients improve their networking and interviewing skills.

2. Sign up for more than one site.

If feasible, join two or more of the above sites.

Not only does this strategy earn your more money, but it also diversifies your work, keeping boredom at bay.

3. Take advantage of referral options.

Some of the sites I’ve listed — like Weegy and PrepNow — provide referral bonuses if you invite new members.

The more you invite, the more you make.

Getting Paid to Answer Questions FAQ

Below are commonly asked questions about answering questions for money.

Can I earn money answering questions on LinkedIn?

Though LinkedIn itself doesn’t offer monetization programs, you can technically make money from it by teaming up with companies willing to pay you to engage other LinkedIn members in Q&A sessions.

How much can I expect to earn answering questions?

About a few to several hundred dollars per day.

What do I need to answer questions well?

The attributes and credentials you need to answer questions well are based on many factors.

For instance, many tutoring sites require a college degree, teaching experience, and expertise in the subject you plan to teach.

And JustAnswer requires you to be a professional in specific occupations like law and medicine.

But in some fields, you only need a general knowledge of a topic or life experience, such as being a self-help author,  an advice columnist, or a Weegy member.

Others require no specific experience, like mystery shopping and survey taking.

Where can I find jobs answering questions?

Thanks to the Internet, you can find many of them online (or create your own online business).

You can also audition for a game show, work in customer service/tech support for an on-site company, or rent a commercial building and run a consulting business in person.

How do I become a therapist?

Here’s what you need to become a therapist:

  • Bachelor’s degrees in psychology and/or sociology, then a master’s degree in psychology and/or counseling
  • A license in a specialty like LMFT (License Marriage and Family Therapist) or LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor)
  • Empathy, listening skills, adaptability, and problem-solving skills

What about fortune telling? Would you recommend that?

Out of curiosity, I surfed some psychic sites, and even though they state fortune-telling is for entertainment purposes only, I find it a big rip-off, especially since many of them charge $1 per minute.

The studies on ESP (Extrasensory Perception) are inconclusive, plus many fortune tellers have a (rightly deserved) reputation for being scam artists.

Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend it and suggest you pursue a more reputable way of answering questions.

Closing Summary: Cash In on Your Expertise!

Responding to questions can help others in several ways.

Your answers can help a student master a subject or pass a test.

You can also use your knowledge to help someone fix an object, answer a trivia question, or guide them through emotional issues.

Speaking of questions, I have a question for you:

Are you eager to get paid to answer questions, especially since there are so many ways to do so?

I bet you know the answer to that.

Tips for Getting Paid to Answer Questions

Here are a few things to keep in mind when using question-and-answer or survey sites.

  • Watch Out For Scams: The internet is loaded with sites that are risky and designed to steal personal information. Use caution when searching for paid opportunities and look for reviews to make sure that a website is safe and trustworthy. Rushing into an opportunity without proper research and signing up for a suspicious site could result in negative outcomes.
  • Track Your Hours: Make sure you track how much time and energy you’re putting into various jobs. Not all sites pay fairly in this line of work, and it’s easy to get taken advantage of if you’re not careful. Chances are you’ll want to avoid sites that don’t pay you enough for your time.
  • Save Money for Taxes: When working as an independent contractor, you need to set aside money for taxes or you’ll risk getting a big tax bill at the end of the year. Consider working with a tax advisor to maximize deductions and reduce your tax liability as much as you legally can.
  • Protect Your Earnings: The trick when working low-paying online jobs is to save as much as possible and invest your earnings. Protect your income and try to grow the money you’ve brought in by making shrewd investments over time.
  • Stay Frugal: Once you start earning more, it’s easy to want to spend it. But try to resist this urge and continue living a frugal lifestyle. Take our word for it: You won’t achieve financial independence if you’re constantly spending on frivolous items.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions about getting paid to answer questions.

Should I accept payouts via Amazon gift cards and Walmart gift cards?

If you want to make money online , it’s generally better to avoid places that only offer online gift cards. However, you can potentially take your free gift cards and sell them for cash on various websites like Raise. Just remember that there’s no substitute for cold, hard cash. Gift cards are fun, but they don’t earn interest and are not usually very flexible.

Can you make money answering questions on social media sites like LinkedIn and Quora?

There are a few ways to make money on LinkedIn and Quora.  For example, Quora offers a partner program that you can potentially use to start driving profits. LinkedIn does not offer a direct monetization system, but you can get paid to partner with brands and engage with customers and respond to questions. In fact, social media engagement can lead to healthy profits for savvy users that can impersonate different brands and keep conversations going online.

The Bottom Line

It’s easier than ever to work at home and make real money by answering questions. If you’re in the market for a full-time or part-time work-from-home job that lets you help others, answering questions is a legit way for both college students and working professionals alike to get some extra cash. In some cases, you can even set your own rates or benefit from revenue-sharing arrangements.

Of course, use your best judgment and never give away personal contact information like your phone number to shady websites. And you should always use secure payment sites like PayPal when collecting money.

While you might not become a millionaire by answering questions online, every drop in the bucket counts. Here’s to earning some extra money during your downtime — bringing you that much closer to financial freedom.

Okay — here’s Joe! Enjoy :)

In 2017, I made the decision to leave my graduate school program and pursue a career in coding. My goal was to get paid to learn to code by seeking out freelance coding jobs for beginners along the way. While spending less than $30 on online courses and resources, I earned close to $5,000 in my first year.

I also recently landed a full-time job as a front-end engineer . I proved that it’s possible to make money coding even if you’re a beginner.

Click To Tweet

Here’s a quick breakdown of how I was able to earn money programming in 2017, and how much my rates for part time coding jobs were. These numbers are before taxes:

💻 $3,510 – From an internship with a web design agency ($25/hour)

👨‍🏫 $1,338 – From TAing/instructing for a local meetup ($15/hour for TA’ing and $25/hour for instructing)

💰 Total: $4,848

Working on a laptop

The purpose of sharing these numbers, which are by no means impressive, is to show you that you can code online and earn money sooner than you think.

In fact, Laurence landed her first tech side gig in just two weeks after starting to learn! She only knew basic HTML/CSS and had an unrelated degree in history, but she landed a programming side job assisting a web developer for $15/hour. You can actually make money while learning to code.

By the end of this article, you’ll know how to start learning to code, how to make money coding, and how to keep yourself motivated . Along the way, I’ll share everything that helped me to develop my skills and make money while learning to code.

How to Start Learning to Code

Before you can start making money coding, you need to begin learning to code! The first question you’re going to ask is, “Where do I start?” I asked myself the same question, but ultimately settled on using freeCodeCamp because it’s free and well-organized, and has a strong community.

freeCodeCamp is a website where you learn to code by completing challenges and projects to get certificates. They organize their curriculum in an easy-to-grasp manner and break everything up into challenges. It feels like a game and the structure provides a clear path to the end goal of a certificate.

💸 Supplement Free Resources With Paid Products

There are so many free resources out there, but there are also resources definitely worth paying for. You’ll quickly make it back once you start to code for money!

I bought a few courses, but the only one I actually completed was The Web Developer Bootcamp by Colt Steele. If you’re looking for a great starting point, I recommend that course. It teaches you HTML , CSS , JavaScript , Bootstrap, jQuery, Node.js, Express.js, and MongoDB in a short period of time.

Creating projects online

It’s important to supplement your free coding resources with paid resources, because the free resources will only take you so far. Usually, the free pieces give you an introduction. The advantage to a paid course is that it will go into more depth. They will take you beyond the beginner level and help you advance more quickly.

💡 Not sure how to get started? Check out Codecademy’s Web Development Career Path that will take you from no-code to an in-demand junior web developer.

Other paid platforms that offer more advanced coding courses include:

  • Mammoth Interactive

🤝 Join a Coding Community (Online or In Person)

Community, community, and more community. I can’t stress this enough. Learning to code is tough and the best way to overcome challenges is with the support of others. Knowing people who are facing the same struggles (or have already worked through them) makes it 100x easier for you.

Find a few people or a group with whom you can connect. This could also give you connections to beginner programming jobs!

Chingu is one of my favorite online communities. It’s a small, focused community that developed from within the freeCodeCamp community. After taking a placement survey, you join an online cohort of people at a similar skill level.

Thanks to joining this group, I made new friendships with people who held me accountable on my journey. We built projects together and grew together. Even today, I still keep in contact with some of them.

💯 My other personal favorite is the #100DaysOfCode community on Twitter, which you can learn more about in this interview on the Learn To Code With Me Podcast . I’ll talk more about this later, but so many coders use Twitter. If you don’t have it, check it out.

Many online coding courses and bootcamps also have their own private communities you can join. Launch School , for example, is an online developer bootcamp that gives its students access to a community forum where they share studying tips, help each other with problems and talk code.

Working at a computer

Meetup is a great place to start for in-person groups. If you want one on Facebook, check out freeCodeCamp groups. Some are location-specific too.

According to Danny Thompson , who went from gas station fry cook to working at Google, “Through meetup communities through freeCodeCamp and many other websites, I was able to learn how to program. I was able to create an amazing network of developers and people that I could tap into in a moment’s notice. But the bigger thing is, I was able to have people that I can rely on and fall back on.”

“I owe everything in my career to meetups […] where the resources and the compounding knowledge just exists in a way that you can absorb it in your own time and pace.”

If you’re serious about getting paid to code, surround yourself with other coders. You’ll learn more, you’ll progress faster, and you’ll be happier. It might also help you earn money programming for connections you make through these groups. For instance, maybe one of your fellow group members knows of an opportunity to code online and earn money, but they’re too busy to apply or their skills don’t fit. They could pass the details on to you!

🎧 Listen to Coding Podcasts

When you can’t find time to sit down and learn at your computer, turn on a podcast. It’s a simple way to do some off-screen learning. You can also make better use of your commute time–even if it’s only 10 minutes. You’ll at least be hearing and thinking about code, even if you can’t be writing it.

Here are a few to help get you started:

  • Learn to Code With Me
  • SyntaxFM (this one’s a little bit more advanced but will help you get past the beginner phase)
  • Launch School Podcast

👩‍💻 Make Coding a Habit

Habits are hard to make and even harder to break. What if you could make coding a habit you never wanted to break? Imagine where it would take you and the discipline you’ll have to code for money in the future.

The best way to create a new habit is by doing it every day. This is why Alexander Kallaway created the #100DaysOfCode movement on Twitter.

The basic premise is to code every day for an hour, for 100 days. Sounds impossible, right? You could never find the time. I thought the same thing. So I changed the rules and only coded for 30 minutes a day. You can read more about my first #100DaysOfCode experience here .

⏳ Even if you can only do five minutes a day, do it. It will be worth it.

Once you’re ready to earn money programming, you’ll already be accustomed to sitting down every day to spend time in a code editor.

How to Make Money Programming: 8 Tips to Find Gigs

Some of you are probably thinking, “Yeah, I can relate to everything you’re saying, but how do I actually make money coding?”

When I was asking that question, I decided to seek advice from a well-known developer. His advice completely changed my entire perspective on getting paid to code.

I asked, “How will I know when I’m ready to code for money and start applying for jobs?”

He said this:

“It’s worth applying now instead of waiting for the right moment. Because by the time you feel ready, in reality you were ready months ago.”

The point is, you can start coding online and earning money way sooner than you think. My first internship started in June 2017. I’d only been coding for six months. Although I found the right opportunity at the right time, it was the decision to start looking for part time coding jobs that helped me get there.

The worst that can happen is someone says you’re not the right candidate for their job, in which case you keep coding and try applying to other coding jobs for beginners later.

Here are eight tips to help you find your first internship or beginner programming job while you’re still learning to code.

🏢 Reach Out to Local/Family Businesses

As a beginner trying to make money coding for the first time, it’s nice to find low-pressure gigs that help your community. Ask your friends, family, or business owners in your local area if they need help building a website or revamping their current one. Or find businesses with terrible websites and offer to build them a website for cheap. For example, start by checking out your local coffee shop, hair salon or mom and pop restaurant’s website to see if there are any opportunities there.

This can be a great way to gain experience, beef up your portfolio , make connections in your community and get paid to learn to code!

For instance, Danny Thompson earned $1,800 for revamping a local Mexican restaurant’s website. How did he land this gig? He simply talked to the manager spur-of-the-moment one evening when he was eating there. That’s how easy it can be to find freelance programming jobs for beginners!

📱 Share Your Progress With Friends and on Social Media

Along with reaching out to local/family businesses directly, you can also share what you’re doing; it’ll benefit your job search and ability to find work. It shows your friends and family that you know how to code, and they’ll think of you when they need help or know someone who has an opportunity to earn money programming.

Four friends have reached out to me for help with websites. Two offered to pay me. Voila: more programming side jobs helping me get paid to learn to code!

This wouldn’t have happened if I’d kept my coding journey to myself. They knew because I shared my progress on Twitter and Facebook. I recommend doing the same. Even if you help someone out for free, it’ll get you exposure and a potential reference to help you find your first paid coding gig!

social media apps on phone

For example, Sarah Greer , a homeschooling mom turned freelance developer, made her start by telling her friends about her progress. “I was telling all of my friends, hey, I’m doing this thing,” she says, “And I had one friend who said, ‘Well, I actually know this guy. He’s got this local business, and he wants a website, but he doesn’t know anything about it.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, let’s just do that. Let’s get in touch with this guy.’ And so I ended up building his website.”

She goes on to say, “I also had a fellow student in [my] class, and she had landed a job doing a landing page for a client. She contacted me and she’s like, ‘I don’t feel comfortable with this JavaScript stuff.’ Can you do that part? And I was like, absolutely, which is hilarious because I was still learning it at the time.”

For yet another example, Adda Birnir says: “[My friend] had a friend who needed a website built. She told her, ‘Oh, I know somebody who is smart and hardworking and is trying to learn this and therefore is not going to charge you a lot to do it.’ So, she put me in touch with this woman. She wanted a WordPress blog and I was like, ‘Alright, I’m going to figure this out.’ I probably charged her $500 or something. And I took my little HTML and CSS skills and started playing around with WordPress and just figured it out!”

When you decide you want to get paid to learn code, that means you don’t have to be an expert to accept a gig. It means the gig is like your homework; it just comes with a check!

💻 Join a Freelancing Site

Another way to find paid beginner programming jobs as you’re learning to code is by using freelancing sites that connect you to coding projects and clients, such as Fiverr , Upwork and Freelancer .

Start with simpler coding jobs and keep your bids low in the beginning. On Upwork, you can filter by Experience Level to find entry-level/freelance coding jobs for beginners. As you learn, you’ll be able to make money coding with more complex, higher-paid coding projects.

In the beginning, taking on freelance jobs like building simple websites or working on existing sites or applications is best. Here’s more about how to land your first freelance client . A quick glance at entry-level web development gigs on Upwork shows that you’ll probably be able to earn $20-40 / hour with freelance programming jobs for beginners.

To stand out from other freelancers on these platforms, avoid these freelancer mistakes and learn how to write the perfect freelance proposal and you’ll be on the right track to making money while learning to code.

Chris Misterek used Upwork to double his previous full-time salary. He says “Once I had asked everybody that I knew personally to build a website, and they either said yes, and the majority of those who said no, I had to figure out another way to find people to put projects in my pipeline and have a consistent amount of work to be able to, you know, have income from my family. And so, so that’s when I started looking into Upwork.”

So I made my profile, I went crazy, just applying to anything that I could find. And sure enough, I got nothing for the first three months. But I just kept at it, kept applying and then lo and behold, finally, somebody reached out to me and wanted to hire me for a really small project.” Within just 18 months, he had doubled his salary.

Another example: After two years, Kyle Prinsloo’s freelancing side gig matched his full-time salary.

➡️ Here’s how to make your first $1,000 through freelancing.

💬 Join Local Slack Groups

Networking is key when it comes to earning money while learning to code. Another way to network yourself into a paid gig? One of the best places to find paid programming jobs is in your local Slack groups. If you do a Google search for tech organizations in your area, the chances are good that they have a Slack group where you can potentially find opportunities to code for money.

Since I’m based out of Arizona in the US, these are the groups I found:

  • ArizonaWP – local WordPress community
  • #yesphx – local startup community

I found two jobs through Slack. One was my first internship as a web developer in the Arizona WordPress Slack group. They had a #jobs channel where I saw a posting for an internship. After messaging the person who posted it, introducing myself, and sharing my portfolio, I landed the internship and officially started to earn money programming.

Two men on laptops

The second paid coding gig I found was a Meetup TA/Instructor position through the #yesphx Slack group. I did the same thing as before–messaged the person asking if the opportunity was available, sent my portfolio, and then was hired!

There are lots of opportunities on Slack channels out there to code online and earn money! Do some research on the tech community where you want to find a job, join them, and get chatting.

💭 Be Open to Coding Hybrid Roles to Make Money

My first full-time job in tech was in digital marketing . How did I get it if I didn’t have previous experience or a degree in the field? Simple: they hired me because I knew how to code.

When offering me the job, my boss wanted me to serve in a hybrid role of marketing and web development. I even negotiated a higher salary because of my self-taught tech skills .

When you’re looking to make money coding, be open to opportunities that aren’t only coding-related. You might find something you weren’t even looking for because of your new skills.

Consider taking on hybrid or “tech adjacent” roles that aren’t all about coding (but can help you learn to code faster in some cases) when you’re first learning to code and want to make money. Examples of this include 👇

  • Technical writing : Write content like technical guides, which can help you understand the concepts better yourself. Avg. salary: $34.14/hour
  • Tech support: Remote customer service positions are often available. Avg. salary: $17.47/hour
  • Website theme building: Can be done on a CMS like WordPress , or even custom themes from scratch. $45-100+ per hour
  • QA or software testing: Run tests to find flaws in developers’ coding. $27.87/hour
  • Data entry: Move data from one format to another. Potential earnings: $16.02/hour
  • Social media management: Manage social pages on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or a blog. You can earn an avg. of $18.37/hour

Having a foot in the door in the tech world can be powerful, even if coding isn’t your main duty in that first role! Logan Tran , for example, started out with a job in quality assurance and became a junior software engineer two years later.

✍️ Start a Blog

Establish your personal brand, build trust, and attract more clients by starting a blog . You can write about your coding journey, share industry news and write about other topics that interest you. Once you’ve built up your audience, a blog can also earn you money through monetization strategies like advertisements, sponsored ads, and affiliate marketing. You can also create a Services/Contact page to let clients know you’re open to paid coding gigs.

If you get around 1,000 page views per month, you could make around $10-$25 per month in ad revenue. That’s not a huge amount, but if you manage to build your audience and get more viewers, you could earn a whole lot more! Ryan Robinson , for instance, started a blog that earns over $327,000 annually.

You can get started with a web hosting service like Bluehost , DreamHost , WP Engine , or HostGator .

🏆 Enter Coding Competitions

While you’ll have to have a bit more experience for this one, entering online coding competitions can actually win you cash prizes if you rank among the top participants. This is a fun, unique way to get paid to code!

CodeChef , for example, is a coding contest site that holds competitions called Cook-Off and LunchTime. If you score in the top 10 globally you could win $100. HackerEarth is another coding challenge site that offers a range of cash prizes for winning various coding challenges. Prizes are often in the thousands of dollars.

Entering these competitions is a great way to practice your skills, build up your portfolio, and potentially win cool cash prizes. You may not be able to earn a ton from this method, especially if you’re just starting out, but it can be a great way to motivate yourself to take on new challenges and earn a little extra cash along the way.

📱Create your own apps

Obviously you’ll need to be a bit further along than learning HTML/CSS to do this, but if you’re learning mobile app development, you could put together free apps with ads or paid ads.

With a bit of luck, you might be able to make money programming mobile apps. To make a decent amount, you’ll need to really dedicate time to marketing and treat it like a business. If you’re still learning coding skills, you could even use a no-code or low-code tool to build it. Or, instead of an app, code a plugin or WordPress theme or other online tool you could list on a marketplace to start earning money.

The apps that are in the top 200 apps on the app store earn around $82,500 every day . The top 800 apps earn around $3,500 daily. Of course, you’ll need to manage your expectations here, but there’s a lot of potential if you find the right niche and build a great app.

How to Not Give Up While Coding and Looking for Work

Whether your intention is to change careers or figure out how to make money coding from home on the side, it can be frustrating when you don’t hit your goal as soon as you’d like. But don’t give up! Here are a few ways to keep pushing through.

🤓 Keep a Growth Mindset

This field of programming is one where you’ll always be learning. Keep a growth mindset. Remember, intelligence is not fixed. You are not born smart or dumb. You can always learn more and grow. The book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth goes into more depth about how the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but passion and persistence.

Always keep an eye out for something new to learn, and remember the words of Gandhi:

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”

It can also be helpful to remember that all successful developers started somewhere. Look at old blog posts or social media posts of people you admire or who are where you want to be to see where they started.

For example, married couple Maxence Henneron & Oxana Ivanchenko built a successful app for keeping homes clean and organized . They are earning $40K in monthly recurring revenue. But it didn’t necessarily come easy. Oxana didn’t have a tech background and learned to code just before they built the app.

If you look back at her older tweets, you’ll see how far she’s come. In 2019, for example, she tweeted “Went to my first meetup today about #reactjs. I was so scared to go, even cried, because I thought that I was not experienced enough in programming. But actually everything went well! Thanks to @MaxenceHenneron who brought me there even though I was really scared.”

Compare that to what she achieved in 2021 :

You can also join forums/communities like freeCodeCamp’s You Can Do This! forum, where developers share their victories and struggles.

⏰ Wake up Early to Make More Time for Coding

If you’re not progressing as fast as you’d like, see if you can make more time to study by waking up early.

When I didn’t have enough time , I started waking up at 5:30 am to get in a half hour before my day started. I don’t do this anymore, but it was a key piece in helping me progress faster.

It wasn’t fun, but it was worth it.

According to Kazumi Karbowski (@Kaziski_) on Twitter , “I recently switched from late night coding to early morning coding (I’m a mom of two lil ones at home and a part time job). I’ve been loving it so much.”

🖥️ Do Another #100DaysOfCode

I was close to finishing my second round of #100DaysOfCode and my friend asked, “What are you going to do once you finish?”

My answer? “Celebrate, take a week off, then start the next round.”

Coding

The beauty of the field of programming is that there will always be a new framework, tool, or technology for you to learn in the near future. It is a forever-changing industry. There will always be more to learn, more ways to improve, and more ways to grow. Remember, you don’t have to know everything to earn money programming.

How to Make Money Coding: Key Takeaways

After reading my article, I hope you can leave knowing these three things:

  • You can learn to code on your own. I spent $30 on Udemy courses (and only actually finished one of them) and still launched my career. Anyone can learn to code–at any age, with any amount of time. All you need is motivation and a desire to challenge yourself.
  • You can figure out how to make money coding sooner than you think. You’re probably ready now. If you can solve a programming issue or build something for someone, you can learn how to earn money by coding the same things. Don’t be afraid to offer your skills up and see how you can help someone.
  • You can’t give up. Coding is tough, and finding your first paid tech gig can feel impossible. But it’s not. Stick with it and keep learning every day. The more dedicated you are, the sooner you’ll get there.

How to Make Money Coding FAQs

What type of coding makes the most money.

According to Stack Overflow’s 2021 survey of 46K+ developers, the top 10 highest-paying programming languages in the United States are: Clojure, F#, Elixir, Erlang, Perl, Ruby , Scala , Rust, Go, and LISP.

Keep in mind, however, that the amount of money you can make while learning to code will also depend on other factors like the type of projects you work on, their difficulty and scale, your area’s cost of living, how many projects/clients you can take on, etc.

How do I find my first paid freelancing client?

Finding your first paid freelancing client can be challenging, especially when you don’t have referrals , a portfolio of work, or testimonials — but with a little effort, it’s definitely possible. Leverage your networks and offline relationships, let people know you’re available for freelance work, create a portfolio of your own self-built projects to show potential clients, and use freelancing platforms like Upwork to get your name and services out there.

In the digital age, the idea of a side hustle has exploded in popularity with the allure of flexibility, financial freedom, and the potential to turn a passion into profit. Whether you're a full-time employee looking to supplement your income, an entrepreneur wanting to test a new market, or a stay-at-home parent seeking fulfillment and funds, the internet presents an endless array of opportunities to make money on the side.

Creating your own side hustle online doesn't just offer an additional paycheck as it can be a launchpad for greater things. It could be the start of a new business direction, or a valuable learning experience that can significantly enhance your professional skills.

If you want to grab the opportunities the digital world provides with both hands, I invite you to read on.

Here are the main steps involved in building a successful side hustle:

1. find your niche.

In the vast ocean of business opportunities, it can be overwhelming to figure out where to start building your own company. The secret to success lies in carving out your own niche , which means finding a unique angle or area of expertise that sets you apart from the competition.

Whether you're starting a new tech start-up or launching a bakery, identifying a gap in the market and catering to a specific audience is key. Not only does this differentiate your brand, but it also provides a clear direction for your business strategy and marketing efforts.

By honing in on your niche, you can create a strong foundation that will enable you to establish yourself as a leader in your field, and set you on the path to success.

2. Develop your offer

Figuring out how to offer your product or service in a way that is profitable is the next step. This might require some brainstorming to figure out exactly what you want to do and how to make it work.

This can be challenging, but with some creativity and strategic thinking, you can find a business model that works for you and helps you achieve your goals. Whether you are selling a product or offering a service, there are many different ways to make money in the world of business.

Take some time to explore your options and figure out what path to success is right for you.

3. Marketing

You've got a clear understanding of what your business is and what kind of offer you want to share with the world. Now, it's time to turn your attention to marketing. Creating a strong marketing strategy requires careful planning, creativity, and a willingness to experiment. Whether it's optimizing your website for search engines, exploring the latest social media trends, or running targeted advertisements, there are countless ways to reach your target audience and drive growth for your business.

With a solid marketing plan in place, you'll be able to raise awareness for your brand, build meaningful relationships with customers, and achieve the results you're looking for.

Now that your marketing message is set, it's time to take the important next step - selling your offer. Selling can be challenging, but with the right approach, it can also be incredibly rewarding.

The key is to be clear and confident in your messaging, focusing on how your offer solves your customer's problems or meets their needs. It's important to remember that sales are about building relationships and trust.

Take the time to listen to your customers, understand their needs and concerns, and offer solutions that benefit them. Make sure you're communicating the value of what you're offering, demonstrating how it can truly make a difference in their lives.

By following these tips, you can confidently sell your offer and build stronger relationships with your customers along the way.

5. Build a supportive network

Building lasting relationships in the business community is crucial to the success of any venture. Leveraging your networks can lead to mentorship, referrals, and potential clients. It's important not to underestimate the power of connections in reaching your goals.

Remember, establishing meaningful relationships takes time and effort, but can pay dividends over the long term. So, keep networking and building your community to ensure your business thrives for years to come.

6. Manage your business finances

Running a successful business is no easy feat, and achieving financial stability is even more challenging. However, managing your business finances is a critical component of success.

As money comes into your business and flows out, monitoring income and expenses is necessary to ensure profitability. Proper financial management allows you to make strategic decisions about investments, expansion, and staffing. Without managing finances effectively, a business can quickly spiral out of control, leading to missed opportunities and financial ruin.

In short, managing your business finances is not an option but a necessity.

The bottom line is that starting a side hustle online may seem daunting, but the potential for monetary gain and personal growth is immense. With the right niche, a well-crafted online presence, and strategic monetization, your side hustle could grow from a part-time gig to a full-fledged business. Stay committed, be adaptable, and enjoy the ride.

7 Ways to Earn Money From Coding and Programming

Feel you could make money from coding? Here are all the ways to earn money programming as a freelancer.

Are you planning to develop skills in programming? Perhaps you've already delved into it but not sure about the available opportunities? Or have you been coding for some time now but looking forward to tapping more opportunities?

Here is the thing; programming is one of the most lucrative skills out there today, offering unlimited opportunities for creative ideas that can get you some extra cash. Consequently, you can become the boss of yourself if you put your mind to some of these ideas. Here are some money-making ideas you should consider as a programmer.

1. Freelancing Online

Freelancing can be frustrating sometimes. But with the appropriate online freelancing platforms, the right mindset, and marketing skills, you can get consistent gigs that pay the bills.

While sourcing for gigs in your locality is also a great idea, virtual gigs online have many advantages as you can reach out to more clients. Additionally, most online gigs also run remotely without you needing to see the client physically. For freelancing online, here are some ideas you can try out below.

Use Dedicated Freelancing Platforms

Thankfully, there are now a couple of great freelancing platforms for specific jobs , including the ones where people hire programmers online.

Companies and individuals now resort to these platforms to get works done faster. Computer science students and researchers also target freelance programmers to solve coding problems. More importantly, they're willing to pay for the value you offer.

Your aim on freelancing platforms is to build trust and get more positive reviews. One of the ways you can achieve that is to build a top-notch portfolio and develop a consistent brand for yourself .

Get Gigs via Social Media Platforms

However, there are no rules that restrict you online. In addition to registering and building your profile on dedicated freelancing platforms, you can also connect with clients via social media platforms and get busy with your IDEs.

For example, LinkedIn is a social media platform where you can build an online resume, market your skills, and connect with potential and active clients. Many employers also source for remote programmers via the platform, and you can always apply to this pool of coding jobs and gigs.

In addition to LinkedIn, you can get gigs from other platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, among others as well. However, what's most important is how you market yourself and connect with clients.

2. Online Programming Tutorials

Many people want to learn to code and won't hesitate to pay a competent tutor. As a result, posting long and short tutorial videos online is another smart way to make money from coding.

Learning platforms like Udemy are places where tutors create free teaching accounts, organize courses, and sell them to their audience. New and even some senior programmers also resort to platforms like YouTube to solve coding problems.

Most of these teaching platforms also serve a large organic audience. If you put in great efforts and you're consistent, you'll get your audience and start getting paid.

While some online tutoring platforms require a good microphone that may cost a bit, it costs nothing to set up a YouTube channel and start posting videos. You also don't need a camera to start putting out your videos online. All you need for a start is an efficient screen recorder and perhaps a clean microphone for better voice quality. However, you can gather more sophisticated streaming tools as you proceed along the line.

Related: How to Use Your Smartphone as a Windows Microphone

In addition to making money, organizing online tutorials exposes you to new challenges and lets you learn more about what you teach. It also offers you the opportunity to put yourself out there and build a brand. Some of your audience can even contact you for a side gig along the way.

3. Develop Valuable Enterprise Apps and APIs

Although building enterprise apps and APIs might seem like a long term goal, putting your time into making innovative ones is worth it. It's a promising way to make passive income.

However, to be successful and have more users consume them, APIs and enterprise apps must address a particular problem. Otherwise, it's not worth it. Although most APIs out there are open-source, some still require users to pay some amount of money for things like security tokens.

When you launch your tool, have it in mind that it's not yet popular. So, charging users for it straight away might discourage people from using it. However, you can let them start on a free trial, and if they find it valuable, some users won't mind paying for it.

Because you're the developer and you don't have to pay anyone for doing the job for you, the development phase of APIs and enterprise apps won't cost you a dime. However, you only need some seed money to push it up for deployment and advertisement. Besides, you're more convinced than not that you'll make passive income later, so it's worth the risk.

One way to push your enterprise app is to advertise for traffic on various platforms. To make money from it once people start using your tool, you should consider placing basic and premium values on it.

4. Blog About Coding

If you love to communicate through writing, you can put that to use by writing blog posts on topics that discuss how to solve coding problems. It's another way to break away from routine as a programmer.

Although monetizing your blog can be a long-term thing, it's worth trying out, especially if you have a writing passion. Apart from generating direct income, writing about coding can also open opportunities for collaboration with other programmers online.

However, you don't have to own a blog to write coding articles online. Some existing publishers are willing to pay you for contributing to their blog. Once you brush up on your technical writing skill and your ability to simplify complex topics through writing, you can reach out to a couple of them online.

5. Develop Open Source Coding Tools

Open-source software can be a tool that improves people's productivity. You can create data science and machine learning tools and modules with languages like Python and C++. Then you can put them up as open-source plugins for a particular software like Excel, Tableau, or Microsoft PowerBI.

You can even build language-specific free coding tools to make software development and deployment seamless for other programmers.

Indeed, open-source tools don't aim to make money for their creators. But if yours is unique and has the potentials to attract high demand, there are a couple of ideas you can try out to monetize it.

For example, you can place features like technical support and plugin support under a license purchase category. That doesn't stop users from using the tool freely if they want. Examples of such existing tools are Sublime Text and Software as a Service (SaaS) tools like WordPress.

However, another idea is to allow support funding for your open-source tool. Doing this can generate income from individuals who don't want you to discontinue your service. It lets you offer all features for free while making money at the same time.

6. Go for Coding Challenges and Contests

Whether you're new to coding or not, it's a great idea to get into coding challenges online. In addition to making instant cash, competitions test your skills and expose you to more opportunities.

Thankfully, there are many coding challenge websites online where you can earn cash for winning a coding challenge or solving a particular problem uniquely.

Although you can make money from these competitions, they let you think critically. Consequently, they can also help you come up with new ideas and brilliant programming inventions.

7. Sell Language-Specific Ebooks

If you're a pro in a particular programming language and you know how to put words together to make a teachable curriculum, then it's probably time you put an ebook up for sale.

Many newcomer programmers and even pros opt for such books as they find them helpful and more reachable when they need them. When you write such books, you should consider marketing them for sale to your target audience via social media.

You can then sell them through websites like Amazon, eBay, or Bookfinder. However, unlike their solid counterparts, ebooks have the potential to reach more people.

Take Advantage of Your Coding Skills

It's great to go for technical interviews and write coding exams to get a formal job in a company, but it doesn't work out for everyone. Even if you're a full-time employee already, it doesn't stop you from trying out some of these ideas to earn extra income from coding.

As we pointed out earlier, programming is a valuable skill. If you're determined, boundless opportunities are lurking around for you. So, nothing stops you from trying them out.

Solve These 3 Problems and You Will Always Make Money

  • Solve These 3 Problems and…

solve these problems to make money

When I was 25 years old, I was earning six figures, living in a dope apartment by the beach in LA, driving a custom Lexus, and yet… I was miserable with a capital “M”.

Let me back up and reintroduce myself. I’m Nicole Purvy, real estate investor, entrepreneur, author, and owner of Better Than Success.

How I Got Out of The 9 to 5 Rat Race

Now back to my story about how I got out of the 9 to 5 rat race. When I was about 25, I seemed to have backed myself into a corner and I got myself knee deep in a career path that I hated. I hated that someone had control over my day-to-day decisions. I hated that my earnings were capped by someone else’s arbitrary measuring stick. And most important, I hated that I wasn’t doing what I was put here to do. At that time, I had no idea exactly what that was but it I knew that my purpose wasn’t to be a high paid “bean counter” on someone’s trading desk.

Did I mention that my job was an Institutional Bond Trader? I traded bonds for large companies and this was the holy grail of finance jobs for any seasoned industry vet, let alone a young chiclet fresh on Wall street. But again, I was a sad mess.

I Couldn’t Shake This Feeling That I Wasn’t Where I Belonged

Admittedly, its very rewarding that now that we are 8 years into the future, I have learned that I was actually right. I’ve found success as a real estate investor and entrepreneur in a niche that I created for myself that couldn’t be further from trading bonds. And it feels good that my instincts were right. But more on that later, so back to how I escaped the 9 to 5 rat race and became an entrepreneur, real estate investor, author, and speaker.

After sometime I found myself scratching my creative and public speaking itch with a webseries hosted by myself called “The Bond Gurl”. The Bond Gurl was a weekly show where I educated viewers about the financial markets. This was in 2008 way before everybody had web series and podcasts. Although the show completely sucked because I was so terrible (don’t try and find the show I deleted every trace of the show from the internet some years ago), it kind of solved my problem of my suppressed creative side for a while.

My Job Owned Every Ounce of My Identity and Creativity

I tried to keep the show secret from my employer but I subconsciously wanted them to find it. I dont know what I originally wanted to accomplish by being so sloppy with hiding the show. But I will tell you what my carelessness what I did actually accomplish…I was fired! I was fired not because I wasn’t good at my job (I was a beast, by the way…a young phenom), but I was fired because most financial professionals aren’t allowed to promote themselves as brands. They can rarely do anything outside of the company they work for. And this was exactly the problem…the job owned every ounce of my identity and creativity. And as you get to know me and my company Better Than Success you will learn that I am extremely creative and free thinking…just like you.

Over the next few years I used this experience of getting fired from my job to fuel myself to get creative about how to solve not only my problems, but my close friends’ problems as well. And what problems were those? I’m glad you asked…

I’ve built a well known business and brand, Better Than Success, by creatively and effectively solving these following problems:

  • How can I build real wealth to leave a legacy for myself and my family.
  • How can I have freedom of time to do the things that I know will impact the world (my purpose) without stressing about how I’m going to pay my light bill.
  • How can I help as many people as possible to the same things…More importantly, how can I help as many people get to live in their purpose as freely as possible.

You want to know what I have found in my journey? I discovered that one of the best ways to build wealth that will give you freedom of time is through acquiring real estate (you probably already knew that though).

Be sure to read my next post because in it I’m going to tell you my big ah-ha moment when I figured out how to help ALL my friends and family start to invest in real estate while simultaneously helping them to live in their purpose. When I say “ALL my friends” I mean ALL of them.

I take my purpose very seriously (did I mention that my purpose is to help people get to theirs?) Actually some of my friends ended up doing their first real estate deals before I even did mine. Lol…how funny is that.

No one is born with better money habits than anyone else. Dealing with money is an ability that we all have to learn at some point , and the sooner the better.

Once you get acquainted with financial terms and skills, though, it can still feel daunting to begin your journey toward financial wellness. Even if you have a lot of money at your disposal, you might not know what to do with it — and that can cause a lot of stress and attendant emotions , which usually don't help the situation.

"My first step to getting to where you want to be financially is that we have to release that shame," Tiffany Aliche , a financial educator known as The Budgetnista, tells CNBC Make It.

Aliche went through her own " financial shenanigans " before she charted her own path to financial wellness and wrote a book about it to help others.

Whether you need to pay down a mountain of debt or just don't know where to start building wealth, here are the first three steps to take to begin your financial wellness journey, according to Aliche.

  • Op-ed: I'm an advisor who helps clients navigate layoffs. Here's my best advice to prepare

1. 'Shed that shame'

Everybody has to start somewhere. Some folks have the privilege of growing up in families that teach financial literacy from an early age, while others get well into adulthood without a strong grasp of basic money management.

Feeling embarrassed that you lack some of the knowledge to be where you want to be financially won't improve your situation.

"Shame shields solutions," Aliche says. "If I say, 'budget,' you're not hearing [that], all you hear is 'I'm bad, I'm wrong, I made a mistake.'"

Many people fall into the trap of thinking they have to be perfect with money in order to make progress toward their financial goals. Trying to follow a super-strict budget or debt payoff strategy to a T often doesn't work because humans are prone to error, financial experts say .

"One of the best ways to shed that shame is to give voice to it," Aliche says.

She recommends having a friend or loved one you can talk to when you're stressed or confused about money, because often you'll find out they are having similar feelings themselves. Recognizing that you're not alone can help you feel more empowered to try and take the next steps in your journey.

2. Ask for 'specific help' with your money goals

Since personal finance is all about you, you need to get some personalized assistance to know what your next money move should be.

"Identify what you are actually struggling with so you can ask for specific help," Aliche says.

Some folks are stressed about debt , others may be concerned they're not saving enough money , and plenty of people are trying to figure out how to get out of the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle . Each of these scenarios may require a different action.

Aliche gives the example of a friend who called her because he was awarded $2.5 million as a settlement, and he didn't know what to do next. She asked him what exactly he wanted out of the money.

"'I want to make sure that my son doesn't have to worry. I want to make sure that my bills are paid. I want to make sure I'm comfortable,'" Aliche says her friend told her.

She encouraged him to hire a certified financial planner who could help someone navigate the often-jarring experience of suddenly having a lot of money .

3. Focus on what you can control right now

Once you come up with the plan you need to accomplish your goals, the next step is to put it into action.

It can be daunting, especially if you're trying new techniques or still getting an understanding of money concepts. The best way to stick with the plan is to focus on the areas you can control, Aliche says.

"You have your levels of control. [Over discretionary] expenses, you have the most control. You can make your changes there first," she says. "Bills [like for housing and utilities] typically take bigger life changes."

You may have to start smaller than you want. Big financial goals like saving for retirement or starting a business take a long time. But your journey has to begin somewhere.

"Starting is critical to movement," Aliche says. "So if your big goal … seems so far away,  we have to break that goal down to, 'What can I do today?'"

After failing for decades to cut carbon emissions enough to stop the planet from dangerously overheating, scientists are increasingly looking at backup measures, some that would fight the warming by intervening in the climate itself. Today, my colleague Christopher Flavelle on the efforts to engineer our way out of the climate crisis.

It’s Friday, April 5.

So, Chris, you’ve been covering climate change for a while, but recently you’ve been focused on a very special project. Tell us about this.

Yeah, two things have been happening in climate change recently that are really important. Number one, records have been falling at alarming rates. Last year was, again, the hottest year on record. Much the world surpassed the important threshold of 1.5 degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels. So the world is getting warmer at an alarming rate.

At the same time, emissions aren’t falling. The message of the last generation has been, we need to cut emissions really to almost zero by the end of this century. And in fact, the reverse is happening. Emissions are continuing to rise.

At the same time, the number and characteristics of weather disasters have become really alarming. So the effects of that warming have become really clear. And it’s clear that the world is struggling to adapt to those effects.

So the other thing that’s happening at a high level is there’s more research and more consideration of OK, what if we can’t cut emissions fast enough? What if we’re going to have this really severe degree of warming? Can we do something else, maybe temporarily, to buffer those effects? And that’s led to this question of, what kinds of changes can we make deliberately to the atmosphere, to the environment that will maybe produce some sort of artificial cooling in the meantime?

So earlier this week I was able to watch, as scientists did, the first outdoor tests in the US on a technology that will aim to do just that. It’s called marine cloud brightening.

So what is this idea of brightening the clouds? Where did it originally come from?

So everyone I talked to pointed back to one really important moment in 1990 when a British physicist named John Latham was taking a hike in Wales with his young son. And they were looking out at the clouds over the Irish Sea.

And as Dr. Latham later told it, his son asked him, “Hey, why are clouds bright?” And Dr. Latham said, “Well, because they reflect sun right back in the sky.” And his son said, “So they’re like soggy mirrors.”

And Dr. Latham went on to write a letter in 1990 that was published in the Journal Nature, saying, you know what, if we can deliberately manipulate these clouds, maybe we can make them more reflective and actually counteract the effects of global warming. That was the inception point for this idea, and it led to decades of research culminating in this week’s test.

So the idea is if you can make clouds more reflective, you can reflect more of the sun’s heat back into space. So it won’t get trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere in the first place.

Exactly. That’s what they’re trying to do.

That’s a very simple, and at the same time, a very powerful idea. I love actually that they were hiking in Wales. That’s where I am right now, and we sure have a lot of clouds here, rain clouds. But tell me more about what you saw at the testing site.

So this Tuesday, a little after 7:00 in the morning, I pulled up in a parking lot on a dock at the edge of Alameda.

I’m standing at the gangplank to the USS Hornet, a decommissioned aircraft carrier in San Francisco Bay here for the first test in the US of a machine that was designed to try to brighten clouds, a way of maybe temporarily cooling the Earth.

And I made my way up one of the massive gangplanks and came in to find a cluster of some of the top atmospheric scientists in the world.

Have you met Sarah?

How do you do?

Hi, Rob. How are you?

Looking really excited. And they accompanied me out to the flight deck —

Here we are.

— of this aircraft carrier.

Pretty epic.

It’s pretty great.

Which was a bit like a party. They’d set up a little table on the side with some coffee and some sandwiches, and people were chatting and saying hi to each other. And I asked them why they were excited.

So I know a thousand of what you know, and I still find this exciting. You guys, walk me through. Is this like a big day for you or just like one more test?

No, this is a big day for me.

And they said this was actually a huge day in their research.

Just looking at it, going, yeah, this is the culmination of years of work, right?

Wow, and tell me about what exactly they were so excited about and what they were doing on the ship.

Yeah, the thing everyone was excited about was this machine set up at the far end of the flight deck of this aircraft carrier. It’s blue. It’s shiny. It looks a bit like a snow maker or maybe like a spotlight.

This machine is a sprayer. What it does is it sprays really, really, really small aerosol particles, in this case, smashed up sea salts, a long distance at just the right size and just the right volume. Because in theory, at some point, you could use this machine to change the size and number of the droplets in the clouds. You can make them brighter conceptually it’s possible. The question is, technologically, can we do it?

Yeah, the particles are coming out in a super concentrated there. So whatever’s coming out of that circle there is basically going to be huge by the time it gets to the cloud.

And so the goal with this test was they spent years building this sprayer that can use really high pressured air to smash salt particles into super small bits, about 1,700th the size of a human hair.

What they didn’t know, until this week, and they’re trying to find out right now, once you spray it, do those aerosols that are so finely tuned stay that size? In theory, they should.

What they don’t know is, things like wind and humidity and temperature could potentially cause them to coagulate, to regroup, which would throw the whole thing off. If the aerosols you’re shooting into clouds are too big, you can backfire the whole purpose. You can wreck what you’re trying to do because you make clouds less reflective, not more reflective.

So the whole goal of the experiment is, OK, can they make the spray just so, so that even in outdoor conditions, the aerosols that are so finely sized remain the size you want them to be. And that’s what they’re trying to find out.

And you watched the actual test of this. What did you see? What happened?

Those instruments are emitting a slight hum.

So operating the sprayer is not straightforward.

And they’re filling the tanks with the salt water that’ll be used to produce the mist.

There was somebody crouched on the control deck, the panel of instruments at the side of the sprayer. So I went over and tried to sit next to him and watch him as he turned a series of knobs and careful sequence.

OK. Yeah, everybody, we’re going to run some air. So the — ... We need two minutes here just to have power on this.

And after a series of tests to make sure the valves were clear —

OK, ear protection, please.

— finally the moment came, and he got an all clear over his walkie-talkie. And he turned on the water —

Water on, copy, over.

— and the air.

[COMPRESSOR ACTIVATING]

Since the sound of the compressor pushes pressurized air through the sprayer, it’s making a dull, throbbing sensation. You can feel it a little bit through the deck of the ship.

We all had ear protectors. And even with the ear protectors, it was really loud. And then you can almost feel the spray bursting out of this machine and watch it travel really hundreds of feet down the deck of the aircraft carrier.

OK, water off, fan off. Good job.

Awesome, guys, you’re done. Thank you. Excellent.

First test is done.

My first signal that things have gone well was I looked up when the spraying machine was turned off and saw some scientists high-fiving down the deck.

What’d you think?

It’s beautiful.

Is it what you thought it would be?

It’s better. And I’m optimistic that it will tell us a lot about what these things do. This made me really optimistic.

And the idea is to do several short bursts like that through the day?

And everyone seemed really excited that this thing they’d worked on for years was finally happening in this really important outdoor test.

OK, so it sounds like this test was a success.

Yeah, they stressed that they need a lot of time to really go over the results. They’ll be doing this test again and again in different weather conditions. But the initial reaction seemed positive. They seemed to think that the numbers they were getting were what they were hoping to see.

And so now the goal is, can they maintain the right size aerosols even in different conditions down the deck of this aircraft carrier? That’ll give them some confidence that if they decided one day to try and do this on the open ocean to actually brighten clouds, they’d have the ability to do it.

So, Chris, if all of this works, how and when do these researchers anticipate that this would actually be used?

Well, here’s a great example. In the month of February, a version of this testing was also happening in Australia, off the Coast of Australia, where researchers were testing whether marine cloud brightening could be used to cool the ocean just a little bit around the Great Barrier Reef.

Really high ocean temperatures are causing bleaching of that coral reef. The idea was, could they use marine cloud brightening to save some of those reefs from dying? And that’s probably a good idea of the fairly localized situation, where you could, in theory if you do it right, have a fairly quick degree of cooling that could maybe try to avert or mitigate something pretty acute like a heat wave or a stretch of warm weather that would kill coral. But the science is probably too new at this point to talk about the right situations to use it. Those conversations are all down the road as researchers look at these and other ideas for what they could do if things get really bad.

We’ll be right back.

So, Chris, when I think about solutions to climate change, it usually involves these very hard things we need to do, like, change the way we live, the way we drive, what we eat. We need these international treaties. We need carbon taxes regulation. There’s lots of hard stuff, and we haven’t gotten that far.

But here you’ve just told me about this technology that, if it ends up working, could actually help cool the planet without anyone needing to do any of these hard things. It sounds great.

It does sound great. Now, we’ve got to say, first of all that whenever anybody working on this stuff talks about it, the first thing they say is this is not an alternative to reducing emissions. This is looking for ways to buy time as we try to cut emissions. There’s no way to really deal with climate change that doesn’t entail burning less fossil fuel and quickly.

But yes, in addition to brightening clouds, there’s other ways to try to bounce more sunlight back into space and other ideas. My colleague David Gelles wrote the first piece in our series looking the idea of removing carbon dioxide directly from the air, reversing our past emissions.

Other ideas include finding ways to suck up more of the CO2 in the oceans. There’s even ideas that my colleague Cara Buckley covered of could we build a sort of a giant parasol way out in space that would reflect or scatter more of the sunlight and prevent some of that sunlight from even reaching the Earth in the first place?

So there’s a huge number of ideas that until very recently seemed just so bizarre and/or so expensive and/or so dangerous that they were hardly worth pursuing seriously. And what’s changed really quickly in the last really year or two is all of a sudden those ideas have switched from being too wild to spend much time on to being so important because the situation is so dire that we can’t not look at them. And that’s the pivot that my team has been trying to cover.

And what characterizes all these initiatives is that rather than reducing our own emissions, we’re now trying to intervene in the climate in a proactive way, engineering the climate in a way.

Yes, and you hear the phrase geoengineering to describe these ideas collectively. And what people who research this will stress is, we’re already geoengineering. For more than a century, we’ve been geoengineering in the sense of putting climate changing pollution into the atmosphere that’s caused the planet to change by trapping more heat in the atmosphere. So the question is, do we want to deliberately geoengineer in a way that will ease that pressure rather than just making it worse?

Of course, there some controversy attached to this. And there are some pretty valid concerns about what the consequences might be if we keep on pursuing these ideas.

And why are they controversial?

Well, the first concern that you hear is this idea of moral hazard, that if people come to think that there are ways of addressing climate change that don’t require them to change their lifestyle or sacrifice conveniences or change the kinds of cars they drive or how their power is generated that they will lose interest in those tough changes. And the momentum, such as it is, towards cutting emissions will fade even more. But we don’t know yet whether politicians or governments or companies or just people will misuse these ideas to try to shirk the harder work of reducing the amount of greenhouse gases we emit.

Another really important argument you hear is, OK, side effects. Do we really know what would happen if we tried these things? Marine cloud brightening is one of those situations where there are known unknowns and unknown unknowns, as they say.

The known unknowns are, well, what would happen to things like ocean circulation? What would happen to precipitation? What would happen to the effect on the amount of energy reaching the ocean? What would happen to the fisheries industry? We don’t really know, and researchers are trying to find out, what those effects might be.

Then there are the unknown unknowns. If you start deliberately changing the cloud system, well, what else might happen that we haven’t anticipated? Do you move the location of where rainfall happens? Do you perhaps upset the monsoon cycle in India? Do you change the ability to grow food in parts of the world?

So if you do this at a bigger scale, the consequences of those potential side effects get more and more severe. And I talked to environmentalists who said that’s a real concern. You just can’t model those risks. And you, to a degree, by pursuing this, have to accept that risk is real and almost roll the dice.

And I guess much like climate change, where you have a group of countries that is most responsible for CO2 emissions that have caused the global warming and then a whole other group of countries that are probably suffering the worst consequences, even though they haven’t contributed to those emissions nearly as much, you might see a situation where this kind of interference with the climate at the initiative of some countries, presumably the wealthy countries that have that technology, would then have unintended consequences in countries that have no control over this. So that’s tricky.

That’s right. And that takes us to a third category of concerns, which is, OK, let’s assume that things are bad enough, that collectively societies want to take those risks of those side effects. Well, then who chooses, who decides when we get to that point? Is there even a mechanism that would allow you to get informed consent from everybody who’d be affected?

And if these would affect everybody, it’s hard to imagine how you would build a governance mechanism that would allow you to say, before we push the button, are we sure everybody is OK with this? The only counter to all of these concerns is compared to what? And this is the point that researchers make.

OK, this is dangerous. OK, it presents challenges, but compared to what? Their point is, don’t compare it to a situation where everything’s fine. Compare it to a situation we’re actually in, where the trajectory of global warming is so serious and isn’t looking like it’ll get better any time soon. Well, compared to those risks, how do these risks compare?

And the question is, would you rather have a world of basically uncontrolled warming? And we have an idea of what that brings, wildfires and drought and sea level rise and storms and diseases. Is that better than some of these more perhaps controlled risks associated with deliberately tinkering with the environment?

So it’s almost like pick your poison. What sort of threats do you want to embrace? And that’s the overwhelming dilemma that we face with this technology.

In a way, what it makes me think, is that these crazy initiatives that we’ve been hearing about from you are yes, they’re testament to our failure in a way to combat climate change so far, because they’re such a last resort, really, such as an act of desperation. But at the same time, it seems like this urgency has actually unleashed a lot of energy and money to tackle the problem.

Yeah, and there’s good news in this. The good news is, the research we’re talking about demonstrates the really amazing capacity of scientists to come up with new ideas, develop new technologies, test them quickly, and at least build some options.

So if there’s any rays of hope around climate change, it’s that humanity’s capacity to innovate and find new ideas is almost endless. So the question is not, are we pursuing the wrong research ideas? The question is, can we find good ideas fast enough to avert the really serious consequences of climate change that we’re already facing?

Chris, I just remember that scientist we heard in the tape from your visit. And she was so excited. And she said that she was really optimistic. I wonder, how are you feeling?

I think the frustration that you’ll hear among climate reporters, and I’m in this group, is that most people seem not to appreciate the severity of the situation that we’re in. There seems to be a view that we’re dealing with this. People are buying electric cars, and we’re getting more solar power and wind power. And things are going the right way, and this will be OK.

Things are not going the right way. Not only are we on the wrong trajectory in terms of emissions, we are so far away from being on the right trajectory for emissions that it’s hard to imagine us cutting emissions globally at a rate anywhere near fast enough to avoid almost unbearable consequences of global warming. So that’s the downside.

[MUSIC PLAYING] Here’s the good news, though. I do think, and this again I think is a view among other climate reporters, the capacity of scientists and of companies to change track and to find new products and apply new ideas is really impressive. It just doesn’t feel like there’s a connection yet between the urgency of the situation and the way people and companies and governments are responding.

And so I guess if the question is, how I feel about this? I am constantly amazed at the ingenuity of the researchers I come across in my job every day. What I don’t yet know about is whether or not society will move fast enough to adopt and apply those ideas before the conditions that we face from climate change become almost unbearable.

Well, Chris, on this cautiously optimistic note, thank you very much.

Here’s what else you need to know today. In a tense phone call with Israel’s leader Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, President Biden called the airstrikes that killed seven aid workers this week unacceptable and threatened to condition future support for Israel on how it addresses concerns about civilian casualties and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. It was the first time that Biden explicitly sought to leverage American aid to influence Israel’s conduct of the war against Hamas. But the White House stopped short of saying directly that the president would halt arms supplies or impose conditions on their use as some fellow Democrats have urged him to do.

And a centrist group called No Labels has abandoned its plans to run a presidential ticket in this year’s election after failing to recruit a candidate. The group, which last year said it raised $60 million, had planned to put forward what it called a bipartisan unity ticket in the event of a rematch between President Biden and former President Trump but in recent months suffered a string of rejections from prominent Republicans and Democrats who declined to run on its ticket.
