UNSENT MESSAGES PROJECT

Unsent messages project.

Hello world!

The Unsent Messages Project is a creative endeavor where individuals write letters or messages they’ve never sent and share them anonymously or publicly. It can be a therapeutic way to express emotions, regrets, or thoughts that haven’t been communicated for various reasons. Sometimes these messages are addressed to specific people, situations, or even to oneself, offering a cathartic outlet for unexpressed feelings. The project often exists in various forms, from online platforms.

The “Unsent Messages” project encourages people to compose but not send messages they wish they could share. Participants write heartfelt, unsent letters expressing emotions, thoughts, and sentiments, offering catharsis and a safe space to unload unspoken words, promoting healing and introspection through unshared yet impactful messages.

The Unsent Messages Project is an initiative where people anonymously share the messages they never sent to someone important. These messages could be unsaid confessions, apologies, expressions of love, or closure.

The project was conceived as a means for individuals to release pent-up emotions by expressing their unspoken thoughts, enabling catharsis and closure.

Participants anonymously submit their unsent messages through a designated platform or medium, sharing their thoughts, feelings, and stories without revealing their identities.

Messages vary widely, encompassing unspoken confessions of love, apologies, gratitude, regrets, or expressions of anger and forgiveness.

Reasons for not sending these messages directly can range from fear of rejection, past conflicts, the absence of contact, or a desire to maintain distance while still expressing feelings.

Writing unsent messages can be therapeutic, providing a sense of closure, relief, and emotional release by articulating suppressed feelings.

Platforms facilitating this project typically ensure anonymity by not disclosing any identifying information about the sender.

There’s usually no strict format; participants can express themselves freely, using text, poetry, or any other medium that best conveys their emotions.

It can be facilitated through websites, social media platforms, dedicated forums, or even physical spaces like art exhibitions or installations.

Some projects curate and display these messages anonymously, allowing others to empathize and connect with shared experiences.

Public sharing aims to create a sense of connection, solidarity, and understanding among individuals experiencing similar emotions or situations.

Reading these messages can foster empathy and understanding of the complexities within human relationships, helping individuals reflect on their own emotions and experiences.

While it can be cathartic for many, some might find it emotionally challenging to revisit past experiences or emotions, potentially causing distress.

By encouraging open expression of emotions, the project helps break the stigma around discussing mental health struggles and seeking closure.

Some initiatives offer resources or guidance for coping with emotions post-submission, such as counseling services or community support.

Projects often have guidelines to ensure messages are respectful and avoid revealing sensitive or identifiable information about others.

While it doesn’t directly facilitate communication, it can encourage self-reflection and possibly inspire individuals to address unresolved issues.

Yes, many platforms allow for private submissions, ensuring confidentiality and anonymity.

It has grown from small-scale initiatives to larger, global movements, incorporating various art forms, technology, and interactive platforms.

It fosters empathy, promotes emotional expression, and underscores the importance of addressing unresolved feelings for personal growth and healing.

How to See Unsent Messages

Now you might think or ask that perhaps there is a way for a person to read unsent messages? Can others see the hasty texts you decided not to send at the last minute and thought deleted but probably not completely?

Worry not because someone else, or you even, seeing when you unsend messages, has proved to be quite impossible. So your secret love confessions or unsent drunk texts are still secret and cannot be read ;) Although I must add that there is a pretty cool website where you CAN see unsent messages…

What is the unsent project?

What is the unsent project?

There have been misunderstandings, or non-clarity in popular social networks like Tik Tok about a said “unsent messages’ ‘ project. One should not go there to see unsent messages. Can others see them? My answer to those questions would be a “NO.”

The unsent project doesn’t make your unsent messages visible or acquirable. But rather, the unsent project is about a website that makes it possible for everyone around the world to write unsent love messages anonymously and post on that website.

Maybe you want to get something out of your chest but telling someone is out of the question, so you can easily go into the website and write the message and post! And the best part? You will stay anonymous.

The website is accessible for everyone, but it would be secretive, and no one would know for whom thus messages were for. No one can know which of the unsent messages were addressed to them or if any ‘admirers’ have ever dropped any unsent messages for you on the website.

A reason why the unsent project was started was to see what color people relate love with. – and statistics showed it to be blue. The colors are required whenever a person wants to leave a message, and most people associate love emotions with the color blue.

Are unsent message websites real?

i was going through wilbur’s unsent project and this just made me so emotional pic.twitter.com/Jr2T2A8FOG — roo (@originslore) January 8, 2022

It’s real and happening. You can find their website and drop messages too. Or read other people’s messages. They are quite entertaining and often dramatic.

You might have a few things to say to your crush or lover or someone that broke your heart?

The unsent project messenger is the perfect place to write without it ever reaching the person to which the message was being addressed. So go on there and check the website out! Leave a message or two if you like.

However, an unsent messages website is not a world where privacy is being violated, or identities are being revealed in any form or manner. The products and services make it a safe and secured platform that archives message compilations that people write on the website.

It’s a world of freedom where you send a message to whosoever you decide to include that person’s name if you like but also not quite sending it to them as they would not be informed or might never even come across it. It is not necessary for the person you referred to the message to come across it if it were anonymous mostly. Privacies and identities are addressed in the unsent project messages website.

Is it possible to see unsent messages?

Is it possible to see unsent messages?

It depends on what you mean by that. Now, if you are asking if someone can see the unsent messages, you wrote for them but never sent, for reasons, then no! They can’t see it. But if you post it on the website of the Unsent message, then it is visible to everybody in the world to access anytime.

Do not forget that you would be writing the unsent messages as an anonymous person, and thus no one would ever know who wrote the messages, and if you would like, you wouldn’t disclose to whom you are writing that either.

The website is all about keeping anonymous. It’s like an open secret when you think about it and is very intriguing and almost feels like an inside joke to you when you write your feelings to a certain person anywhere and at any time, no matter how soft or cold you may sound in that message but no one reading it would know who you were referring to.

Unsent messages website is a world provided for people who want to be heard but never spoken for personal or social reasons or interest to drop a message with no trace.

Moreover, you could type your name on the website, though, and if the person that left the message decided to write the addressed person’s name, then perhaps the person could see it.

But you still wouldn’t know who the message was from, except, of course, if the person wants to be known, their name will perhaps also be in the message. Or if you intentionally want the person to find the unsent message or not. But if you do not want the person to find out, you need to use the website rather than say it directly to their messenger or something. It’s a choice.

How do I see unsent messages on messenger?

To answer the question as to whether unsent messages can be seen in messenger, the answer would be a “no.” It is impossible to remove a message before sending it and seeing it.

No one can see a text message when you permanently remove it before sending it. You just have to tap and hold to delete the unsent message, and it is gone forever. Reading unsent messages would be against a few privacy rules and hence would be against the law.

How to Unsend an Email

In a nutshell, the Unsent Project is about a website that makes it possible for everyone worldwide to write unsent love messages anonymously and post them on the website.

It might be a love confession. The website is accessible for everyone, but it would be secretive, and the writer and the person addressed to would not necessarily be known. The Unsent Project is in no way in comparison to the messenger app, and thus unsent messages in messenger can neither be accessed by the one to have been sent to nor the writer of the text that was never delivered.

The Unsent Message Project (what is the unsent message project)

The Unsent Message Project

1 in 5 Americans suffer from mental illness, and many of them don’t seek help because they’re afraid of the stigma. The Unsent Message Project is working to change that by giving people a platform to share their stories anonymously.

If you’re struggling with mental illness, you’re not alone. The Unsent Message Project is a safe space for you to share your story and connect with others who understand what you’re going through.

What inspired the Unsent Message project

When I was a child, I remember my father always telling me that it was better to write a letter and never send it, than to never write a letter at all. His reasoning was that at least if you wrote the letter, you had put your thoughts and feelings into words, and that was better than keeping them bottled up inside.

As an adult, I often find myself thinking about my father’s words of wisdom. And so, when I came across the Unsent Message project, I was immediately inspired.

The Unsent Message project is a collection of letters written by people from all over the world, who have never sent them. The letters are anonymous and range in topic from love and loss, to anger and regret.

Reading through the letters, I was struck by how powerful and vulnerable they were. Each one was like a little piece of someone’s soul, laid bare for all to see.

It is my hope that by sharing these letters, we can all feel a little less alone in our experiences. We can know that we are not the only ones who have felt heartbreak or anger or sadness. And we can find comfort in knowing that we are not alone in this world.

What is the goal of the Unsent Message project

The goal of the Unsent Message project is to create a safe space for people to express their feelings and emotions. The project offers an online platform where people can share their thoughts and experiences anonymously. The project also provides support and guidance to those who need it.

How does the Unsent Message project work

The Unsent Message project is a non-profit organisation that collects and stores messages that people have not been able to send. The messages are anonymous and can be about anything.

The project was started in 2013 by two friends, Anna and Sarah, who were struggling to communicate with each other. They decided to start collecting messages that they could never send, as a way of cathartic release. The project has since grown and now has a team of volunteers who collect messages from all over the world.

The messages are stored in a safe place and can be accessed by anyone who needs them. The project offers a space for people to express themselves anonymously and provides support to those who are struggling to communicate.

Who started the Unsent Message project

The Unsent Message project was started by a group of friends who wanted to create a safe space for people to share their stories. The project provides an online platform for people to share their experiences with mental illness, addiction, and other difficult life experiences. The project is run by volunteers who are passionate about creating a supportive community for those who need it.

Why was the Unsent Message project created

The Unsent Message project was created in response to the increasing number of people who are struggling to communicate effectively. The project provides a safe space for people to explore their thoughts and feelings, and to share them with others. The project is designed to help people to understand themselves and their relationships better, and to find new ways of communicating.

What has been the response to the Unsent Message project

The Unsent Message project has been an incredible success! We have received an overwhelming amount of support and encouragement from people all over the world. The response has been overwhelmingly positive and we are so grateful to everyone who has contributed to the project.

How many messages have been sent through the Unsent Message project

The Unsent Message project is a global initiative that encourages people to write messages to their loved ones and then send them into the world. The project has been running for over two years and has collected over a million messages from people in more than 170 countries.

It’s estimated that, on average, each person who participates in the project sends out seven messages. That means that, so far, over 7 million messages have been sent through the Unsent Message project.

There’s something really special and beautiful about this project. It’s not just that it gives people a chance to express their love and appreciation for their loved ones, but it also creates a sense of connection between strangers from all corners of the globe.

I think the Unsent Message project is a great example of the power of communication. It shows that even though we may be separated by distance, we can still reach out and touch one another’s lives in a positive way.

What are some of the most memorable messages sent through the Unsent Message project

1. “I’m sorry I never told you how much you meant to me.”

2. “Thank you for always being there for me.”

3. “I love you and I miss you.”

4. “I wish I could have been there for you.”

5. “You were the best friend I ever had.”

What happens to the messages that are sent through the Unsent Message project

The Unsent Message project is a website that allows people to send messages to each other without having to worry about them being read or seen by anyone else. The website is designed so that the messages are only viewable by the person who receives them, and they are not stored on any servers or in any databases. iOS 17 Unsend Messages: How to Easily Retract Texts on iPhone

To unsend a message on an iPhone running iOS 17, simply open the Messages app, go to the conversation where the message was sent, press and hold the message, and select “Unsend.” The message will then be retracted, and a notification will inform you that the message was unsent. It’s a quick and easy process, but note that there is a time limit to unsending messages.

After unsending a message, it will disappear from both your and the recipient’s conversation thread. However, the recipient may see a notification that a message was unsent. Also, if the recipient has already seen the message before you unsend it, they will know what the message contained.

You can also watch this video about how to unsend messages on iPhone for more information.

Step 2: Press and Hold the Message

Find and press firmly on the message you want to unsend.

A menu will pop up after a few seconds, giving you various options, including reactions and more. Look for the “Unsend” option.

Step 3: Select “Unsend”

Tap on “Unsend” to retract the message from the conversation.

Once you select “Unsend,” the message will disappear, and a small notification at the bottom of the screen will confirm that the message was unsent. Note that the recipient will also see a notice indicating that a message was unsent.

Additional Information

When considering the unsending feature on iOS 17, it’s essential to note that there is a timeframe in which you can unsend a message. The exact duration may vary with updates, so it’s good to check the latest information or attempt to unsend a message as soon as possible if needed. Moreover, the feature is only functional if both the sender and receiver are using iOS 17, which means it won’t work if the receiver is on an older version of iOS or a different platform altogether.

Another aspect to be mindful of is the etiquette of unsending messages. Use this feature thoughtfully, as frequently unsending messages could lead to confusion or frustration for the recipient. It’s a powerful tool for managing digital communication, but with great power comes great responsibility.

  • Open the Messages App
  • Press and Hold the Message
  • Select “Unsend”

How To : There's an Easy Way to See All the Unsent Messages in Your iMessage Conversations

There's an Easy Way to See All the Unsent Messages in Your iMessage Conversations

While you can quickly see the edit history of a modified iMessage in the Messages app, there's no way to view an iMessage that somebody in the conversation deleted unless you happened to see it before it disappeared. But that's only true if you didn't implement these security measures on your iPhone.

When somebody deletes an iMessage, they could be trying to cover up a harmless error or undo something they accidentally meant to send to someone else. But they could also be trying to take back something they wrote in haste, something they're hoping you didn't get a chance to glance at before it disappeared. Whatever was deleted, it could be important, for better or worse.

If your curiosity gets the best of you, there's a way to find out what gets deleted in all your iMessage chats, but only if you prep ahead of time. Technically, there isn't a way to see deleted iMessages on iOS 16 , nor iPadOS 16.1 and macOS 13 Ventura, for that matter. But you can still get around that limitation.

  • Don't Miss: Apple Just Improved Messaging on Your iPhone with 26 New Must-Try Features

Option 1: Use a Device with an Older Operating System

This is probably the easiest and most discrete option, making the most sense if you have an extra Apple device that you don't use very often. Any device running one of the following software versions will be able to see original messages untouched by edits or deletions.

  • iOS 15 or lower (for iPhone, iPod touch)
  • iPadOS 15 or lower (for iPad)
  • macOS 12 Monterey or lower (for Mac)

When a contact unsends an iMessage they sent you, you'll see "[Contact Name] unsent a message" instead of the original message on iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, or macOS 13 Ventura ( middle screenshot below ).

However, the message stays put on iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or macOS 12 ( right screenshot below ). The sender will get an alert saying, "[Your Name] may still see the message on devices where the software hasn't been updated" ( left screenshot below ), which may dissuade them from trying to delete anything in the future.

There's an Easy Way to See All the Unsent Messages in Your iMessage Conversations

So if you have an old iPhone that you haven't traded in, an iPad you only use sometimes, or a Mac that you can't upgrade to Ventura, it may be a good idea to keep them around with iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or macOS 12 Monterey installed so you can always see changes in iMessage conversations — even if it's not until later when you can access the device.

Note that for this to work, you'll need to make sure that "Messages" is enabled for iCloud so that all of your messages sync between your iCloud-connected devices. According to Apple, you also need iCloud Keychain turned on and two-factor authentication on your Apple ID to enable Messages in iCloud .

Option 2: Disable iMessage and Use SMS Only

This is the most inconvenient option since all of the iMessage features you've come to love will be useless to you. If you're willing to give up various iMessage features like screen effects and rich collaboration to see green bubbles instead of blue, it's worth a try at least.

To turn off iMessage on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings –> Messages, then toggle off the "iMessage" switch. Doing so won't remove your past iMessage conversations, but all future messages you send and receive will be SMS or MMS messages.

There's an Easy Way to See All the Unsent Messages in Your iMessage Conversations

On your Mac, open the Messages app, then use the Command-, keyboard shortcut or click "Messages" in the menu bar and choose "Preferences." Then, select "Settings" under the "iMessage" tab and "Sign Out" completely. You could also just uncheck your phone number to stop receiving iMessages on your Mac and pick an email address from which to start new iMessage chats, but signing out is probably easier.

There's an Easy Way to See All the Unsent Messages in Your iMessage Conversations

With iMessage disabled on all your devices, any iMessage somebody sends you will be received as an SMS or MMS message using your cellular network. They will count against your text allowance if you have one. Since it becomes an SMS or MMS, it will show up as such on the sender's device. Text messages are not editable and can't be unsent like iMessage, so you won't ever have to worry about the new "Edit" and "Undo Send" features in iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, or macOS 13 Ventura.

Just updated your iPhone? You'll find new emoji, enhanced security, podcast transcripts, Apple Cash virtual numbers, and other useful features. There are even new additions hidden within Safari. Find out what's new and changed on your iPhone with the iOS 17.4 update.

How to see unsent messages on an iPhone

A pple offers a neat feature with iMessage on the best iPhones that allows you to unsend a message. Maybe you sent something in error, sent a message to the wrong person, or regret sending it in haste and want to modify it. You can retract a message you send, as can others who send something to you. But is there a way to see that message anyway after it has been unsent? The short answer is no, but there are some workarounds and ways to see unsent messages from other apps beyond iMessage.

How to unsend or edit an iMessage on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS

See unsent messages with an older ios version.

The bad news is that you can’t see an unsent message if you’re using an iPhone running iOS 16 or higher (or an iPad operating iPadOS 16.1 or higher or a Mac computer with macOS 13 Ventura or higher). That would defeat the purpose of being able to unsend a message, after all, so it makes sense that Apple prevents this. But there’s one thing worth noting: you can see an unsent message if you’re using an older OS, running iOS 15 or lower.

When someone unsends a message using an iPhone running an older OS, you will see that the person unsent a message. Instead of the entire text of the message being deleted, there is a note that the person removed or edited the message along with the original text that was “unsent.” For this to work, you need to have Messages enabled for iCloud, iCloud Keychain turned on, and two-factor authentication.

Don’t use iMessage

It’s not a great workaround, but if you don’t use iMessage, choosing to stick only with SMS, the sender can’t unsend a message that has already been sent. You can turn off iMessage without turning off data entirely by going to Settings, Messages, and turning the switch beside iMessage to the “off” position. This isn’t an ideal solution, but if you feel someone is being secretive, it’s at least a viable temporary workaround.

Tweak notifications settings in Messenger

Using the Messenger app, there’s a clever way to ensure you always see messages, even if someone unsends them.

  • Open Messenger .
  • Select the three lines in the top left corner.
  • Select the gear icon .
  • Scroll down and select Notifications and sounds . Close
  • If it isn’t already on, select Turn on notifications . This will take you to the Settings menu for Messenger.
  • Select Notifications .
  • Tap the slider on the right to turn it on (it will turn green). Close
  • Under Show Previews , change it from When Unlocked (the default setting) to Always . Close
  • Under Banner Style , select Persistent .
  • Now, any time you receive a Messenger message, a preview will show up on your iPhone's home screen. Even if the person unsends the message, the Preview has already been delivered, and you can view it from the home screen before it’s removed from the actual Messenger app. Close

Unsending messages can be useful

It can be useful to unsend a message you didn’t mean to send. You might have accidentally sent your child’s teacher the grocery list you meant to send your spouse or your boss a message you meant to send to your co-worker. Whatever the situation, the feature is there for a reason. So, Apple purposely makes it virtually impossible to see a message that has been unsent by the sender, even when using the latest iPhone models, like the iPhone 15 Pro Max .

This works both ways, so as much as your curiosity might get the best of you about what someone sent then unsent, the same might go for them the next time you find yourself using the tool. The best thing to do is move on and focus on the messages people want to send to you and those you want to send to them.

What to know.

  • You cannot see unsent messages unless you have access to a device running iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or macOS 12 and older.
  • If you don’t want others to be able to unsend texts, you can disable iMessage and use SMS instead.
  • While the recipient can’t see the message, they will see that you unsent a message.

Everyone, at some point in their texting career, sends a message that they quickly regret. Luckily, most messaging clients now have an option to quickly unsend a message within a certain amount of time. Starting with iOS 16, Apple added this convenient option to iMessage, but many are wondering if someone can see an unsent message on iPhone.

  • How to Unsend a Message

Unfortunately, if all of your Apple devices are updated to the newest version of iOS, you won’t be able to see unsent messages. However, if you happen to have an older iPhone, iPad, or Mac on hand that is still running iOS/iPadOS 15 or macOS 12, you can see unsent messages. Since unsending messages is only available on newer software versions, unsent messages are still visible on older devices.

This is the only way to see unsent messages in iMessage. When a message is unsent, it is removed from the Notification Center as well, so even if you have iPhone message previews enabled for Messages, you won’t be able to see the preview once the message is unsent. Can I unsend an iMessage? Yes! If you ever send a text you instantly regret, you can easily take it back. Find out how to unsend an iMessage so that you don’t ever have to worry about sending something embarrassing. Keep in mind that when unsending messages on iPhone , the other person will be able to see that you did so. While they can’t see the message itself, they will know you unsent something.

  • Why can’t I undo send iMessage? Unsending messages on iPhone only works within the first two minutes that you send a text. After two minutes, you will be unable to unsend it. Check out our article on reasons why you can't unsend an iMessage for more information.
  • Does deleting a message on iMessage unsend it? No, deleting a message does not unsend it. When you delete messages on your iPhone , it only deletes the local copy of the text on your device. It will still be visible to the other person, and sometimes even on other devices where you use iMessage.
  • Can you search in iMessage? If you need to find a specific text, find out how to search in iMessage . You can use this handy feature to track down any message you’ve ever sent.

Nittany Lion Shield Penn State Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost Mark

Message from Justin Schwartz (April 2, 2024)

Colleagues,

I write today to share the bittersweet news of a leadership transition, my own. Moments ago, I was announced as the sole finalist for chancellor of the University of Colorado Boulder, and I will visit the campus this week. In accordance with Colorado law, any finalist for consideration must be shared publicly at least 14 days prior to formally appointing an individual. While I am certainly looking forward with excitement to the possibility of this incredible professional and personal opportunity to lead CU Boulder, it is also true that it was a difficult decision to pursue this opportunity because of what Penn State means to me.

I want to acknowledge the truly remarkable people I have had the good fortune of working with these nearly seven years. Working alongside the faculty, researchers, and staff at Penn State, as well as some of the most impressive students in the world, has been a highlight of my career, and I will cherish the memories and relationships I have been lucky enough to forge across Penn State. I want to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunities I have had as dean of the College of Engineering, and most recently as executive vice president and provost. When you are surrounded by incredible people, you grow. I feel a tremendous amount of gratitude for how I have grown and have been shaped by all of you and the We Are spirit. I hope I have been able to offer learning, leadership, understanding, support, and friendship to those around me.

Penn State is strong, and is on a path to an even stronger, more sustainable future. I want to thank President Bendapudi for her dynamic leadership of this great institution and express my sincere belief that the path we have worked to navigate together since July 2022 is one that will set up Penn State for generations more of remarkable achievement. I am grateful to President Bendapudi for the opportunity to serve as your provost and for her guidance and the incredible support she has provided me along the way. Under President Bendapudi’s leadership, in partnership with a talented team of senior leaders, with the alignment of the Board of Trustees, and the collaboration of the larger University community, I know that the institution will emerge stronger than ever. I will watch proudly as the University continues to reach new heights. Furthermore, through the end of the term, I will continue to support these efforts, President Bendapudi and the entire President’s Council.

I hope every member of our academic community — our students, our faculty, our researchers, and our dedicated staff members — will continue to approach their work with passion, excellence, integrity, and trust. Your dedicated efforts to improve our world will find tremendous successes, and I will be cheering for you.

Thank you to each and every member of our Penn State family.

Grattan on Friday: Albanese has made a statement in choosing Sam Mostyn as governor-general , but he could have been bolder

Perhaps it was inevitable, given our current ultra-divisive politics, that governor-general designate Sam Mostyn would become the latest punching bag in the culture wars.

Warriors on the right have cast the well-qualified Mostyn as an activist from woke central. They’ve reacted variously with outrage, sarcasm, or carefully-pursed lips. The advocacy group Advance described her appointment an “insult to mainstream Australians”; one commentator wrote she reflected “the worst of modern woke Australia”.

Mostyn has progressive political views and, historically and currently, links with Labor governments. She was a staffer to Paul Keating, and has headed Anthony Albanese’s Women’s Economic Equality Taskforce. None of that makes her unsuitable to be governor-general, a post occupied with distinction by former ministers from both sides of politics. Nor will she be the first in the position with known republican leanings.

Mostyn trained as a lawyer, has had extensive business experience, and is unsurpassed as a networker. She ticks a veritable warehouse of community boxes – from being a former AFL commissioner to having served on the board of the Sydney Theatre Company.

Occupants arrive at Yarralumla after long and substantial careers. Apart from those coming post-politics (Bill Hayden, Paul Hasluck), others have included former judges (William Deane) and ex-military officers (David Hurley, the outgoing GG).

They don’t automatically shed their views when they cross the threshold. They may use the office to promote certain causes ( Deane and Indigenous rights ), although this can bring criticism and has to be handled carefully. We don’t know whether Mostyn will see the position as a platform; we can expect she’ll understand well that the governor-general should be restrained, non-partisan, and a force for national unity.

Mostyn’s modern-era predecessors have been a diverse bunch, with their time in office shaped by events, their own personalities and the expectations of the PM of the day.

write an unsent message

Richard Hall in his biography of John Kerr wrote that Gough Whitlam “saw a growing role for a Governor-General in representing the country at functions overseas”. Kerr told an acquaintance, “I can’t tell you how important the Governor-General is going to become in the future”. In 1975, the nation found out just how important, when Kerr booted out Whitlam. Kerr used the office’s “reserve powers” to turn spectacularly on the PM who thought he could control him.

When Malcolm Fraser appointed Zelman Cowen to succeed Kerr, it was widely recognised his remit was to be a healing force after the country’s seismic political upheaval.

Mostly, we think of the governor-general as having ceremonial and community roles, as well as formal constitutional duties in granting elections and assenting to bills passed by parliament. Behind the scenes, however, and leaving aside the reserve powers, the job carries significant responsibilities.

The King’s representative can be the final checkpoint – the “watchdog” – in ensuring a government’s executive acts comply with the law and proper processes. Hurley found himself under fire when it was revealed he had signed off on Scott Morrison’s undisclosed multiple ministries, apparently without questioning what was a strange arrangement. Hurley had no discretion to refuse to sign, but critics believed he should have been more inquisitive. A later investigation into the multiple ministries affair found criticism of Hurley unwarranted.

write an unsent message

Informally, a governor-general, especially one who is close to the PM of the day, can be a sounding board for, and source of advice to, that leader. Given how many people they meet, the governor-general is a one-person focus group. Hasluck said in a 1972 lecture : “With the Prime Minister the Governor-General can be expected to talk with frankness and friendliness, to question, discuss, suggest and counsel”.

Mostyn’s appointment reflects the two sides of Albanese’s political character – the cautious leader and the leader who wants to make a statement.

The bigger statement would have been to choose the first Indigenous governor-general – a strong positive gesture after the referendum’s loss. It’s beyond time we had a First Nations governor-general.

write an unsent message

But the “no” vote made it a step too far for Albanese, not least because any candidate would have been on the “yes” side in the referendum and so their appointment would have opened a new political argument. Also, an Indigenous appointee might potentally have come under serious personal pressures, given the differing views among their own people.

If he wasn’t to go the Indigenous route, it was virtually certain Albanese would appoint a woman. His government has placed gender high on the list when considering qualifications for key appointments. Mostyn also had the attraction of extensive commercial experience, bringing something new to the office.

When he appeared with Mostyn at Wednesday’s news conference, Albanese carefully ensured she faced no questions. He said she’d make some comments (which were mainly to “introduce myself to those who do not yet know me”). Then, he said, “as protocol requires” she’d not say anything publicly until after taking up her office on July 1.

Read more: Businesswoman and women's advocate Samantha Mostyn to be Australia's next governor-general

So there wasn’t the opportunity for her to be asked about her views on the prospects for an Australian republic. But Albanese took a question and his answer confirmed the extent to which the republic has slipped way down Labor’s priorities, given a massive shove by the referendum vote.

Asked whether it was possible Mostyn might be Australian’s last governor-general, and whether he’d like to see the republic debate come forward, Albanese said: “I made it very clear that I had one referendum in mind. And that took place last year”.

Even in May last year (before the referendum) Albanese told British broadcaster Piers Morgan, “what I don’t want to do is to be a prime minister who presides over just constitutional debates”.

It used to be said that the end of Queen Elizabeth’s reign would be the time for the republic to return into the frame. It hasn’t worked out like that. It’s not just the referendum’s defeat. There’s no community appetite to revisit the issue any time soon, and a now risk-averse PM doesn’t want another divisive fight in a second term, especially as history suggests it would be extremely hard to win it.

Certain minimum conditions would have to prevail for Australia to revisit the republic, including a conducive political climate, a pro-republic government with a hefty majority and the prospect of bipartisanship. None of these is on the horizon.

So when there’s a ministerial reshuffle – say in a re-elected Albanese government – will there still be an assistant minister for the republic, a position now held (together with other posts) by NSW MP Matt Thistlethwaite? If so, it will only be to keep faith with Labor’s faithful. Albanese must know that delivering an Australian republic is beyond him.

Surgeon General Message: Measles – Information for the Defence Team

April 5, 2024 - Defence Stories

Message from the Surgeon General

I’m writing to bring to your attention the importance of ensuring that your and your family’s measles vaccinations are up to date, in light of the recent increase in cases in Canada and around the world.

Measles is highly contagious – on average, one case leads to 18 more, if unvaccinated. This means that entire units and work teams could become sick or excluded from the workplace very quickly. Infection can lead to long-term or severe complications, up to respiratory failure and potentially even death, especially for children under five and adults with compromised immune systems.

Canadians have largely forgotten about measles since, until recently, almost all Canadians and most people in the world were vaccinated. However, Canada is seeing an increase in measles activity in 2024 because of various factors, including gaps in normal vaccine programs around the world and vaccine hesitance.

Community-wide vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles. Every member of the Defence Team should be up to date on their measles vaccine. The two-dose measles vaccine is part of routine immunization recommendations for all Canadians, and is part of the Core Health Protection Recommendations  (accessible only on the National Defence network) for all Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members. Despite this, we know that in some CAF groups, almost 30 per cent of members are missing one or both doses.

The two-dose vaccine is over 90 per cent effective, and once complete, does not require a booster. Eligible CAF members can get vaccinated at their supporting Health Services Centre; Department of National Defence (DND) public service and Non-Public Funds employees, and Reserve members on short-term contracts should contact their local public health authority. Anyone with measles should stay home to protect others and seek medical advice.

For more information, please contact your supporting Health Services Centre or family physician. Read more: Measles: Symptoms and treatment .

Jeff mcneil got encouraging message from brandon nimmo before crushing homer.

CINCINNATI — Nothing worked for Jeff McNeil over his first five games of the season, when he collected one hit, was dropped to seventh in the order, got into a tussle with Rhys Hoskins and was the face of a deeply slumping Mets offense.

His teammates, though, did not write off the 2022 batting champion.

One teammate, in fact, wrote encouragingly for McNeil, who might have broken out of his funk.

Jeff McNeil #1 of the New York Mets hits a solo home run in the eighth inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

Friday afternoon, Brandon Nimmo etched a message to McNeil on a bag of batting gloves: “Swing at good pitches and hit it where they’re not.”

McNeil followed the technically sound advice and smacked his first home run of the year, an eighth-inning shot deep into the right-field bleachers, for an insurance run that ultimately was needed.

“That one felt good,” McNeil said after just his second hit of the season, helping the Mets to a 3-2 win over the Reds at Great American Ball Park. “Haven’t been swinging the bat like I wanted to, so being able to get that big hit meant a lot.”

McNeil entered the at-bat 1-for-18 after a Grapefruit League season in which he was 0-for-13.

Jeff McNeil got some sage advice from Brandon Nimmo.

His spring was sidetracked by a sore biceps and his offseason was sidetracked by a partially torn UCL, an injury that might have contributed to his poor 2023, when he hit just .270.

Manager Carlos Mendoza reminded that McNeil won the batting title, hitting .326 in 2022, and McNeil’s teammates have tried to keep his confidence up.

New York Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil (1) hugs designated hitter DJ Stewart (29) after hitting a solo home run in the eighth inning against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.

“It’s been tough,” McNeil acknowledged. “Trying to stay positive when things aren’t going your way is difficult. So it’s nice to have a team full of guys that have your back. The hits are going to drop.”

Friday’s hit dropped, McNeil successfully hitting it where they’re not.

“There’s nobody in the right-field bleachers,” he said with a smile.

The Mets officially added an old foe to their rotation, but Julio Teheran might not be recognizable when he makes his starting debut Monday.

Teheran, a weapon for the Braves from 2011-19, has pitched to a lifetime 3.24 ERA in 30 starts against the Mets.

After a right shoulder strain cost him most of his 2021 season and helped lead to his being out of MLB all of 2022, Teheran has reinvented himself.

His old slider is now a cutter.

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Julio Teheran (49) throws a pitch during the first inning against the New York Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

His two-seamer “for some reason is running a little more,” he said. His changeup is new.

The 33-year-old pitched to a 3.38 ERA this spring with the Orioles, did not make the team and opted out of his minor league contract.

He continued throwing in Miami, facing free-agent hitters such as Jean Segura and Yuli Gurriel — hitters who had seen him for years, and hitters who told him he looks brand-new.

“This is nothing like it was when they faced me before,” Teheran said Friday, upon reporting to his new team. “New pitches, everything is like new.”

The Mets have found their new fifth starter, who is expected to slide into the rotation beginning Monday in Atlanta. Injuries to Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill created a need, and the Mets were persistent in their interest in Teheran.

He said he had to decide between the Mets and Orioles for a team this spring, and he felt Baltimore presented more opportunity, but injuries have changed that equation.

Because he has continued throwing, Teheran is expected to be able to throw 70-75 pitches Monday, Mendoza said.

For a third time in his career, he will face the Braves.

For a first time, he will be pitching for a Mets club that he used to torment.

“It feels weird,” Teheran said. “I haven’t realized that I’m on this side now.”

J.D. Martinez, who had been getting at-bats in sim games and live batting practices at the Mets’ facility, officially joined Low-A St. Lucie and went 0-for-4 with a walk while serving as designated hitter for the affiliate Friday.

Martinez likely will play with St. Lucie again Saturday and probably will get the day off Sunday, Mendoza said.

The team and its slugger are expected to talk this weekend about when he feels ready to join the big-league Mets.

“The last thing you want is to rush this guy,” Mendoza said.

Nimmo was out of the lineup after feeling tightness in his right hamstring while running the bases in the first inning of the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader.

Brandon Nimmo did not play Friday night.

Nimmo was able to finish the game because he served as DH. Mendoza said Nimmo came in “feeling a lot better” Friday and may be able to return to the lineup Saturday.

The Mets have not sent Nimmo for an MRI exam.

“Believe we dodged a bullet here,” Mendoza said.

To create roster space for Teheran, the Mets designated Michael Tonkin for assignment.

The 34-year-old righty lasted just three appearances with the Mets, among the last to crack the Opening Day roster.

He allowed eight runs (two earned) in four innings, including a rough, three-run 11th inning that led to the Mets’ loss Thursday afternoon in the front end of a doubleheader.

The Reds held a moment of silence for Pat Zachry, a pitcher who was the Rookie of the Year for Cincinnati in 1976 and traded the next year to the Mets in the infamous Tom Seaver swap.

Zachry, who pitched for the Mets from 1977-82 and was an All-Star in ’78, died Thursday in Waco, Texas, at the age of 71 .
